Frontier rakes in state grant funds — but questions persist over spotty service Local subscribers have long complained about provider

NORTH CREEK | The state announced $103 million in funding to provide broadband for the North Country last week.

The third and final round of grant funding, part of a $341 million package to wire 122,285 homes and locations statewide, comes as the state nears the finish line for an ambitious effort to provide universal broadband by the end of the year.

Just 20 percent of the North Country had internet access four years ago, said Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“Now with round three, 100 percent internet access in the North Country,” Cuomo said in Plattsburgh last week.

The state has pledged up to $500 million, which will be leveraged with private investment topping $1 billion.

The “last mile” funding is designed to cover the thorniest, most remote areas of the state, many of which rely on spotty satellite service — or have no coverage at all — due to the prohibitive cost of installation.

The governor said 99.9 percent of the state will have access to speeds of 100 mbps or greater at the program’s completion, with 25 mbps for the most “rural and remote areas.”

Frontier Communications received $9.7 million in state funds to provide service to 2,735 locations in the Finger Lakes, Southern Tier and the North Country.

But complaints abound about slow or non-existent service being offered by the provider.

Wilmington resident Bob Rose said he’s been battling with Frontier for months over slow and intermittent service, calling it “disgustingly inadequate.”

North Warren Chamber launches focus group series Chamber aims to use communitygenerated data to flag key projects

‘SMALL SUCCESSES’

CHESTERTOWN | The North Warren Chamber of Commerce will hold a series of focus groups this winter to tackle key issues facing the community, including commerce, infrastructure, recreation, tourism and communications.

The information will be used to help prioritize economic development initiative projects and identify which are most important to economic growth and what a project’s impact will be on the community.

The most recent session was held on Tuesday.

“The first two focus groups were small successes towards a bigger goal,” said North Warren Chamber President Greg Beckler.

“We have already taken away actionable items that will have a positive impact on the North Warren Economic Development Initiative.”

Focus groups will take place on different days of the week and at different times to accommodate the widest audience. Each group will be no larger than 10 people, and each session will last 80 minutes.

The Town of Chester held two well-attended town hall meetings last spring to discuss ideas and direction for future growth and economic development.

initiated a new phase with an agreement between the Town of Chester and the North Warren Chamber of Commerce for the chamber to conduct research and perform surveys based on the common themes that came out of the spring sessions.

“The Economic Development Initiative for the Town of Chester has several facets,” said Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett. “It’s important that we focus our energies and resources on those projects that best reflect the values of the community and are also realistically deliverable.”

The chamber has access to businesses and the community at large, he said, and so it makes sense to engage the chamber to facilitate further discovery.

The staff has also held a series of meetings with the town supervisor and chamber board members to shape the next phases of the project in terms of how research will be conducted, how data will be collected and how results and recommendations will be shared.

The chamber will be guided by Dr. Ellen Kraly of the Upstate Institute at Colgate University. Kraly’s expertise in community research was previously utilized during the Town of Horicon’s community survey in 2007.

The remaining sessions will be held Friday, Feb. 16, at 9:30 a.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m.

» Frontier Cont. from pg. 1 “If I’m lucky, we have an internet connection 60 percent of the time,” Rose told The Sun. “We’ve been frustrated as hell over here, a lot of calls. We might have 1 in 10 days where we have internet all day.”

Repairmen have told Rose he’s in a “high volume area.” But his neighborhood contains just three or four houses.

The service deteriorated to the extent that Roses now relies on a wi-fi hotspot at his girlfriend’s house in Bloomingdale.

Rose also recounted stories of poorly maintained equipment, with fallen trees laying for lengthy periods of time on cables.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “Tree limbs, heavy with snow, laying right on the cable.

They need to trim those trees.”

But Frontier is the only provider in the community, he said, and his hands are tied.

“It’s disgusting,” he said. “Why can’t they have competition?”

While he may be the most vocal, he said complaints are common around town.

“It’s not just me. Everybody’s got the same damn problem, and everyone is so frustrated.”

SUPERVISOR AGAINST FUNDS

Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Preston has been fielding calls from frustrated constituents for years.

“Every other week, I get a complaint about Frontier,” he said.

Preston has personally filed a complaint with the state attorney general’s office, and has encouraged his constituents to follow in his footsteps.

Preston, who also serves as Wilmington supervisor, maintains Frontier shouldn’t be receiving any grant funds from the state.

“As far as I’m concerned, they haven’t met their commitment,” Preston told The Sun. “The grants should be pulled from them,

and they should be fined.

“They aren’t living up to their commitment, and I don’t think that should be allowed.”

Preston said that he was “tickled pink” that Cuomo is taking care of the North Country.

But, he said: “They need to keep an eye on people like Frontier. They talk a lot and don’t accomplish much.”

Johnsburg Supervisor Andrea Hogan has fielded similar complaints.

“We have heard from a lot of people in town not 100 percent pleased with their service,” she said. “I’ve heard from at least a dozen people.”

ON SCHEDULE

Frontier’s most recent award will provide service to 1,093 households in Hamilton and Essex counties, including Lake Pleasant, North Creek, Wells and Wilmington.

The funds join $29.9 million in grants awarded last year to the Connecticut-based provider to wire 12,003 units in Ausable, Black Brook, Wilmington, Jay, Newcomb and Chesterfield — the third-largest by U.S. Census block announced in that funding package.

The provider also received $3.3 million in the first round.

Frontier is on schedule with those installation efforts, a spokesman told The Sun, and is on track to meet the Dec. 31 statemandated deadline.

The company has pledged to kick in nearly $10 million to augment the effort.

Complaints over slow speeds are not new.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman told News10NBC last February his office was looking into Frontier after the Rochesterbased affiliate spent months investigating what they said was hundreds of complaints from local subscribers over spotty service.

“We are looking broadly at the industry,” Schneiderman told News10NBC. “We contacted Frontier, so it’s not a secret that we’ve

been looking at them also. We have received some information, we look forward to receiving a lot more information.”

The attorney general encouraged subscribers to pass along complaints to his office.

Schneiderman’s office previously filed a lawsuit against Time Warner Cable (now doing business as Spectrum) claiming the company wasn’t delivering on promised internet speeds.

“There are blackout periods where certain services just goes down and if you look at what you’re paying for and what you’re signing up for, the odds are that there’s another provision of the agreement that’s been violated,” Schneiderman said.

The attorney general’s office did not respond to a request for comment asking about the status of a potential Frontier investigation.

CUOMO: ‘WE WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT’

The Sun asked Cuomo directly what the state was doing to safeguard its investments, and asked specifically about Frontier Communications.

“They are a regulated public entity by the state under the Public Service Commission (PSC), and they handle any consumer complaints,” Cuomo said. “These are companies that we’re subsidizing to provide the service. If they’re not providing the service, we want to know about it.”

The PSC told The Sun they have not received any complaints about Frontier’s broadband service in the North Country.

There is no trigger for commencing a formal investigation.

“If it were to receive a consumer complaint, PSC staff would work to resolve the issue, including bringing in other agencies if necessary,” said James Denn, a spokesman.

The state Broadband Program Office is partnering with Frontier in building “state-of-the-art fiber networks” throughout the state, Denn said.

“Going forward, all upstate New Yorkers will see dramatic improvements in service quality and availability as a result of Gov. Cuomo’s nation-leading investment program,” Denn said. “As part of this effort, PSC staff will work closely with the BPO to ensure that companies receiving awards, including Frontier, provide good customer service.” ■ To read this story in its entirety, visit suncommunitynews.com

Chesterfield residents have joined their Wilmington counterparts in complaining about what they perceive to be poor service.

Frontier told The Sun in 2016 that they were unaware of any “widespread or consistent problems” in the Chesterfield area.

Speeds are dependent on numerous factors, including the distance of a customer’s home from switching equipment, as well how many people are using the internet at the same time and their applications, a spokesperson told The Sun. “As part of our normal course of business, we continually invest in our network to provide customers with ongoing enhancements and upgraded speeds,” said Patricia Amendola, the spokesperson.

Asked to respond to the recent rash of complaints — including Preston’s assertion that Frontier should not be receiving state funds — a spokesman responded, “In general, the program requires projects to have speed capability of 100 mbps. The Frontier projects will satisfy this requirement of the program.”

‘Cabin Fever’ event to benefit ADK volunteer firemen, EMTs Year-old benevolent association helping firefighters

CHESTERTOWN | Less than a year ago, a group of local firefighters formed the Adirondack Volunteer Firefighters Benevolent Association for the purpose of helping their firefighting and EMS brothers and sisters who are facing hard times.

Since forming on April 4, 2017, the association has been able to help three volunteer firemen purchase fuel to heat their homes, mainly by tapping into dues and some private donations.

In an effort to build up its reserve and assist other volunteer firemen and their families, the association is holding its “Cabin Fever 2018” fundraiser at the Panther Mountain Inn, in Chestertown on March 3.

Mike Turano, who served a combined 25 years as a volunteer fireman with several fire companies, is association president and one of the founding board members, which includes George Verfurth and George Gahan of Garnet Lake Fire, Cheri Hayes form North Creek Fire, Bob Swan from Chestertown, Bill Bibby from North River, and trustee Joe Arsenault, from Tupper Lake Fire.

“Tupper Lake provides about 50 of our members,” Turano said. “They said they just wanted to help the brotherhood.”

The Adirondack Volunteer Firefighters Benevolent Association was started with only 10 members from Warren County, and has grown to 84 members from 15 departments in five counties.

Membership in the association is open to volunteer firefighters, EMS personnel, past chiefs, or ladies auxiliary members. The purpose of the association is to provide emergency assistance to volunteers who need help paying for food, heating fuels, or who might be facing a utility shut-off.

Turano said the association will contact the utility company or fuel provider and arrange payment directly.

“One we get in touch with them and explain who we are and what we are doing they have been very cooperative,” he said.

Turano said the assistance is generally available to volunteers who might have missed work due to sickness, injury, or who have some other circumstances that prevent them from paying heating bills or buying food.

To enter a burning building, a firefighter has to be certified to use the self-contained breathing apparatus (SBCA).

Firefighters are required to attend month general meetings and training meetings in order to be on call 24 hours per day.

I believe in America

Last week, I reflected on an event from the past but didn’t have the space to bring it into the

I believe in America, even with all her faults, warts and indisputable past.

I believe each generation has the opportunity to learn from the past, and do their best not to erase the past, but to correct where needed.

I believe in the rule of law, fairness and equality for all who call America home.

I believe we are each responsible for pulling our weight, working hard and helping others who are less fortunate.

I believe in a Supreme Being who has blessed our nation and expects the very best from each of us.

These are the beliefs that were consistent with my upbringing at home, in school, at church, and through our media culture. Right always triumphed, even against might.

I am a little confused at some of today’s cultural changes.

Not long ago, nearly every American could readily agree with those statements made above. Today in some circles, it’s a risk to even go on the record making such declarations.

The recent release of the controversial Republican FISA memo and the yet to be released interpretations from the Democrats and the judicial system is a reflection on how things have changed. Interpretation implies that the base facts have different definitions leading to different outcomes.

I learned growing up that nothing was more important to our belief in America than basic fairness. When you were wrong or wronged someone, else no matter how trivial, you were required to own up to it and apologize.

Today with facts so blurred, I wonder if we’ve lost our way and how this current state of affairs will play out in future generations.

Will they find the solutions that evade us today? Will some major unforeseen tragic event bring us back to a more united front or will the various factions cause the further splintering of our country?

It seems clear given the outrageous language and actions we see coming from our leaders that we need a major course correction to get back on track. Civility, respect, and the truth must surface above all else.

I for one believe in America and pray that our best days are still ahead as we find our way out of this current state of unrest. ■

Kudos to the state on broadband. Now it’s up to the public to hold providers accountable The state is nearing the end of its fouryear quest to provide universal broadband by the end of 2018.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the disbursement of the third and final round of grant monies in a visit to Plattsburgh last week.

The governor announced nearly $210 million in direct state investment. Altogether, the state has pledged $500 million, which will be topped with $170 million in federal funds and an equal amount of private monies, making the initiative a $1 billion-plus undertaking.

Once the projects have been implemented, the state promises 100 percent broadband access statewide.

To further break it down, 99.9 percent of New Yorkers will have high speed access, which the state has defined as 100 megabits per second.

That leaves the remaining 0.1 percent of the state’s most “rural and remote areas” — which we can only assume is the Adirondacks — to receive speeds of 25 mbps.

Zeroing on any more precise numbers is a crapshoot, as the state and winning grant providers have said it’s too early to provide that information.

But while the numbers seem infinitesimal, broadband means life and death for our Adirondack communities.

Even just one household or U.S. Census block left behind could be devastating.

The state pledges that the remaining fraction will be covered through satellite service offering speeds of at least 25 mbps.

An artist’s work, and his conduct, should be separate To the Editor: Elizabeth Izzo demonstrated a well-balanced approach to the news of the National Gallery of Art decision to cancel the Chuck Close exhibit (The Sun, Feb. 3, 2018).

Elizabeth writes, “... it’s important to note that the court of public opinion and the court of law are two separate things,” implying allegations of sexual misconduct without judicial review are not sufficient grounds for punishment.

Yet, the National Gallery decided to punish this artist by denying him the crowning achievement to his long, successful career.

In closing, she asks: “Should an artist’s conduct and the work he created be separate, too?” She left this a rhetorical question. I’ll provide the answer. Yes! The Uffizi Gallery in Florence

So here’s the question: Does it really count as a win if homes are ostensibly wired for broadband, but the service doesn’t work?

Don’t take it from us, but rather your friends and neighbors across the Adirondacks — from Wilmington to Chesterfield to Indian Lake — who have called us for years with their concerns about Frontier Communications.

We’ve even spoken with some folks who have indicated they will move because they’re so frustrated.

We want to be clear that we support the New NY Broadband Program, and state officials have worked tirelessly in tackling such a visionary project.

They deserve to be commended, and so does the governor.

The program has seen many roadblocks — many of which are outside of Albany’s control, including financial hiccups from providers and the utility companies who must work in tandem with them to install equipment.

Ultimately, the task of monitoring these projects after their completion falls to the state Public Service Commission, who promised to work closely with the BPO to ensure that companies receiving awards, including Frontier, provide good customer service.

The state has done their part.

Oh, and poor Charlie Rose. I ask only rhetorically, what man has not found himself, at some point, in that embarrassing, awkward position of pursuing what he

Details on the satellite service are still fuzzy, state lawmakers admitted.

We’ve heard some local residents criticize the state for throwing in the towel and saying “good enough.”

We disagree with that.

Thirty percent of New Yorkers, or about 2.4 million locations, lacked access to broadband when the state Broadband Program Office launched the program in 2015.

It’s no small feat to wire not only the state’s most remote places, but arguably the most isolated communities in the entire country.

The state really has entered unchartered territory with this project, which is said to be studied by other states as a blueprint.

However, we do have concerns about handing so much grant money to companies like Frontier Communications, who appear to have a long track record of providing sub-par service to existing subscribers.

We reported this week that Frontier has been the recipient of nearly $44 million in state funds, including nearly $10 million as part of last week’s announcement.

Concerns about their service are prolific across the North Country, with even the Essex County Board of Supervisors chairman arguing the Connecticut-based provider shouldn’t be awarded funds if they cannot provide the service — especially to existing customers.

Frontier hasn’t really done anything to assuage our concerns, issuing only vague promises that subscribers will receive 100 mbps.

We want leaders — not children To the Editor: I was reading the Feb. 3 edition.

How tired I am becoming with the antics of our elected so-called leaders.

In the opinion section, I read that the state purchased more land and removed it from the tax rolls. Also in the same article, they admit that the state is facing a $4.4 billion shortfall.

It does not sound like fiscal leadership to me.

Then in the letters section, I read how childish that one party’s politicians are acting just trying to get elected. We the people want leaders not children, like those who acted like spoiled children at the State of the Union.

Also the letter on the media is an opinion that I cannot understand. I have stopped reading the Post Star because of its leftleaning stance (perceived or not, my opinion) along with declining content and increased cost.

Making snow and rainbows on Dynamite Hill Chestertown makes snow for its lone ski slope

CHESTERTOWN | When the light is right, the lone snow machine on Dynamite Hill is making more than just snow — it’s producing a rainbow that can be seen while driving down state Route 8.

Chestertown Highway and Water Superintendent Jason Monroe said the town acquired its own snow gun during the winter of 2009-2010.

“We purchased it used from the Lenko snowmaking company out of Sweden. They had a sales division in the industrial park by the (Floyd Bennett Memorial) airport,” Monroe said.

The town was hoping to upgrade the skiing facility that was established what he believes is the site of a dynamite storage area.

“More than 50 years ago, I think, the town had an ordinance saying hardwares could not store dynamite in town, so that is where they used to store it,” he said.

Monroe said he used to ski Dynamite Hill when he was a kid, and he was aware that some of the winters just weren’t what they were when he was younger. He said he has

worked for the town over 16 years, and he simply volunteered to help out with the ski area. He skied at Gore Mountain and saw they had snow making machines, and asked, “Why can’t we do it here?”

Monroe talked to the supervisor at the time about maintaining the slope and he was told the town couldn’t pay anyone to do it.

“I told them I’m salaried so it won’t cost anymore, only the water to make the snow,” Monroe said.

With the snow machine, town water, and a generator loaned by Warren County, Monroe started making snow for Dynamite Hill. Since then, with the help of highway department employees and the Chestertown Rotary Club, electrical service was added and a new ski lift was installed at Dynamite Hill. There is now electricity for a warming hut and snack bar.

Monroe said there was a learning curve to making snow.

“A lot of people who made snow in the past gave me suggestions to tweak this or that, and I think we’ve got it down pretty good now,” he said.

Monroe said in the early stages, they were putting out too much water. The one snow machine has 480 nozzles and they have to be adjusted according to the wet bulb temperature and relative humidity. Monroe said he piles up the snow in big mounds, which allows excess water to drain from the snow, and the North Warren Trailblazers Snowmobile Club brings its groomer and drags it

“The groomers come over and spend 60 to 100 hours per year grooming for us,” Monroe said.

Dynamite Hill is ready to go for the Krazy Downhill Derby, scheduled for Feb. 17. He said

the Dynamite Hill ski area also offers a covered ice skating rink and reasonably priced food.

“It’s nice for the community to have it, and the people at the highway department are happy to pitch in,” Monroe said. ■

Rather, it is to reverse the demographic trend by encouraging increased immigration, particularly of young people with a long working life ahead of them.

ries hostage and is now offering to release them for a ransom that consists of his beloved wall and a set of proposals that would drastically reduce legal immigration.

Exactly the wrong direction.

We need to have a rational debate on immigration policy that strikes a balance among three principles: First, we need to meet the needs of employers for a well-balanced,

well-trained workforce, be it for dairy farm workers in New York or Ph.Ds in Silicon Valley, and to encourage creativity, diversity and entrepreneurship.

Secondly, we should show compassion for those already here by allowing them to sponsor members of their immediate families, promoting family cohesion.

Finally, we must live up to our

international responsibilities towards refugees who are fleeing conflict and persecution. It is shameful that we have done so little at a time when refugee migration is at its highest since the second world war.

It’s time to elevate the discussion on immigration to a real policy debate and not just fear-mongering and hostage-taking.

Turning back the pages THE WINTER OF DISCONTENT

Here it is, another Saturday morning and I would like nothing better than to head out for the Richards Library to sit in my usual seat in front of the microfilm machine to read just what went on here in Warrensburgh 100 years ago.

My problem is that I am paranoid about what I perceive to be a fearsome green monster laying in wait for me. He is wearing a nasty torn tee shirt with the initials “FG” upon it. This identifies him as the ugly “Flu Germ.” I have no intention of leaving my safe, sanitary abode to seek out this monster’s odious company. “Better safe than sorry.”

Looking through my newspaper collection, the best I can offer is the winter of 1963, the Adirondacks and Warrensburg as it was 55 long years ago. How fast those years flashed by! Hopefully if you read this, you will find some happy memories in connection with that year.

THE WINTER OF 1963: REMEMBERING A GOOD NEIGHBOR

Harry Demarest, chairman of the membership committee of the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce and John C. Gould, president, recently discussed the drive for the 100 percent membership for 1963. Other members of the committee are Robert Pasco, George Grady, John Countryman, Cal Engle, John Hickey and Robert Muncil.

(Update: Harry and his wife, Anita Demarest, were my good next door neighbors on upper Main Street, Warrensburgh, from 1962 to 1977 after they bought Andy & Bill’s popular night spot from Andrew Becker and Bill Biers. They renamed it “Harry’s Cordial Inn.” Harry was a former New York City police officer. I have many good memories from those happy days.

In 1977 Harry and Anita sold their thriving establishment and moved to Bolton.

As Harry was never one to sit around and idle, before long he took on the job of town judge in Bolton and recently, as of Dec. 31, 2017, after 37 successful years, he

retired. He was said to have possessed fairness and good judgment in abundance and Bolton is said to be very unhappy to have him go. It will be interesting indeed to see what new adventure this good man will take on next.

I would personally love to see him come back to Warrensburg and reopen “Harry’s Cordial Inn” once again.

In the February, 1963 issue of the Warrensburg News, I read in one of Harry’s ads: “On Bonanza Days, Feb. 16, 1963, there will be a Valentine Beefsteak Party at Harry’s Cordial Inn. Steamed clams are 60 cents a dozen and shrimp cocktail with filet mignon bits are $2.50 a person.

There will be dancing until 3 A.M.” Who could resist a great night on the town like that? We miss you Harry!

LOOKING BACK AT TIME

It was just 50 years ago — around Feb. 10, 1913 — that a cold snap struck Old Mother Earth suddenly after a prolonged season of comparatively warm weather and caused Warrensburgh to shiver and produce a severe earthquake in this general area, at about 11 o’clock in the morning.

A crack appeared in the ground about an inch wide and several hundred feet long which was opened in the ground.

Two more later shocks caused houses in the town to rock. (Update: I have read that the major crack in the ground was in the area of the Warrensburgh Cemetery.)

PASSED AWAY

George H. Buyce, 71, Bowen Hill Road, Athol, passed away Jan. 30, 1963 at the Glens Falls Hospital. Survivors are his wife, Eva, and a son, Elmer Buyce. George lived in Athol for 61 years.

STEWART SPEAKS OF DAYS GONE BY

Well-known Warrensburg historian Stewart Farrar, who was born in 1892, spoke of his father George Washington Farrar when he said: “My father earned five dollars a week for 60 hours a week operation of a machine at the Warrensburgh Woolen Mill, on Milton Avenue. In those days money went for necessities.”

(Update: Stewart left school when he was 16 years old and in 1918, at the peak of World War I, Stewart went to work at the Woolen Mill himself. That was the year that his wife, Barbara, died of influenza. Stewart died in 1983.)

NOSTALGIA

A son was born to Mrs. Philip Kenyon, of Athol, Feb. 5, 1963. A son was born Feb. 6, 1963 to Mrs. Eugene Rounds, of Warrensburg.

A daughter, Mary Patrica, was born March 2, 1963 to Mrs. James Jordan. Little Mary is the granddaughter of Dr. John E. Cunninghm, of Warrensburg.

In Brant Lake, Earl Granger Jr., son of Earl Granger, celebrated his 13th birthday on Jan. 30, 1963. Present were his sisters, Betty, Sally, Patty and Cindy Granger and his brothers, Jerry, Rickey and Roy Granger.

Fancy pork loins are to be had currently, the week of Feb. 7, at the Grand Union store for 29 cents a pound.

Russet potatoes are 8 cents a pound.

In Thurman, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Harris, on the Thurman Road, celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary, Saturday, Jan. 26, 1963 at dinner in Glens Falls.

They were married Jan. 26, 1929 in the First Methodist Church, Warrensburg, by the Rev. Allen F. Bain. ■

Oscar’s Meat Market, the celebrated “House of Meats,” is selling a five pound roll of their best lean hamburg meat for $2.50 a roll this week.

Howard Johnson’s restaurant, in Lake George, has an “all you can eat” fish fry for $1 per person. Children eat for 75 cents.

CHESTERTOWN | Chestertownians are getting ready for the 42nd annual Krazy Downhill Derby, when all manner of homemade sleds will make a run down Dynamite Hill.

According to Lynn Engelmann, a staff member at the North Warren Chamber of Commerce, people can and do create all manner of sleds, built to resemble planes, trains, and automobiles - including vintage Edsels.

Past inclusions at the chamber-organized event include a UPS truck, snowplow, Batmobile, army tank, and a U.S. Coast Guard vessel.

Other unique sleds were designed to look like a six-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer or a Tampax box.

And Eric & Eric Construction have entered a Viking ship sled.

The chamber’s Krazy Downhill Derby will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is one of the more widely received events in the Chestertown area.

“That depends on the weather, of course,” Engelmann said. “If we have a nice sunny day, we will have more people.”

There will be a cardboard sled making night at the YMCA Adirondack Center to help kids make sleds for the cardboard division, which Engelmann said is a sort of junior version of the big sleds.

None of the sleds may have motors or any kind of power, other than “gravity and a push.”

Other rules include only four people per sled, and a sled may only go down

Big sleds may be made of any material, but must have steering and brakes, and are subject to inspection before being allowed to go down the hill. All the riders must wear helmets.

The day’s events include a continental breakfast at 9:30 a.m. at the warming hut. SonRise Lutheran Church is providing hot chocolate. At 10 a.m. there is a hockey shootout, which allows people to try to get a puck into a slot in front of the net. At 10:30 a.m. there will be broom ball, which is played with broomsticks and a 5.5-inch diameter ball, and four-person teams. The Cardboard Sled Race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the People’s Choice Award at 11:45 a.m.

“That’s how the winner is chosen.

It’s not by time,” Engelmann said.

The winner of the People’s Choice Award will choose whether to go first or last, as the sleds go down Dynamite Hill one at a time. The downhill derby is at noon.

The Dynamite Hill Recreation Area is located on Route 8 in Chestertown.

Get there early to view the sleds up close. Refreshments in the ski hut.

At 1 p.m. the basket raffle winners and 50-50 winner will be announced.

There will be photo ops with stand-in cutouts of Olaf from the hit Disney film “Frozen” and a snowboarder, DJ music, a fire pit, food and s’mores.

“It’s just a good opportunity to have hot dogs, chili, and socialize,” Engelmann said.

became something of a family project, and it now involves grandchildren. Over the years, he has gotten his employees involved, particularly the year when he broke his shoulder while skiing. Another year he got his radio-control club interested, and they made a large biplane shaped sled.

Being a builder, Isachsen decided to take up the challenge to build his own.

Another example of life imitating art involved using the Monty Python production “Spamalot” as inspiration for creating a giant, killer rabbit.

“We’ve made several over the years,” he said.

Given his Scandinavian heritage, Isachsen decided to go with a Viking ship, which also happens to be part of the company logo for his business, Eric & Eric Construction.

Isachsen said he, his kids, and company employees have made various Viking ships, one using a canoe as the starting point.

More imaginative, perhaps, was the time they put together two “air dams,” which are the wind spoilers attached to tractor trailer cabs. Attached together they formed the hull of the Viking vessel.

Isachsen said making a sled for the Krazy Downhill Derby

“We built a huge rabbit on skis,” Isachsen said. “It was kind of narrow, about three feet wide, and 14 feet tall, and barely made it under the bridge.”

Isachsen said the Krazy Downhill Derby, scheduled for Saturday. Feb. 17, is one of the longest running events he knows of, although the Brant Lake Winter Carnival, scheduled for Feb. 24, draws more people.

“For years (the derby) was a cabin fever antidote,” Isachsen said. “People would come out for hot chocolate and cheer on the kids. People were closed up, it was cold and snowy, and they could get out and see their neighbors around a campfire.” ■

The Krazy Downhill Derby, said Eric Isachsen of Eric & Eric Construction, is a good opportunity for people to get out in mid-winter and see their neighbors. “One of my concerns that we will address is the possibility of invasive species,” Seggos said.

“In the Adirondacks when you have a pond like Boreas Pond where it is largely pristine in some respects in terms of its exposure to invasives. We want to ensure that when the crowds start coming up there, the boats are clean.”

One idea is the installation of a small boatwashing station at the upcoming Gateway to the Adirondacks at North Hudson campgrounds to combat invasive species that may be transported up Gulf Brook Road, a measure echoed by Feldman during her comments.

Seggos hailed Alternative 2B as a balance, and said the public hearing process supplied “enormously important information.”

The viewpoints of critics will be weighed during the UMP process, he said.

“The governor since he took office has espoused this concept of balance in the Adirondacks, protecting the most special places — the wild lands — but also giving our hamlets and towns a chance to realize some economic benefit the lands we’re setting aside,” Seggos said. “So since Day 1, that’s been the philosophy at DEC and APA is to find that balance.” ■

More than 11,000 acres will be added to the High Peaks Wilderness Area, and some 9,000 as Wild Forest, a less restrictive category that will allow motorized uses on select areas.

The APA voted 8 to 1 to classify the 20,578acre parcel as Alternative 2B, a plan largely viewed as a compromise solution that splits the parcel between Wilderness and Wilderness, with a protective cocoon shielding the namesake ponds at the center of the parcels.

A grassroots advocacy group called Adirondack Wilderness Advocates sprouted in the wake of the purchase of the parcel by the state from the Nature Conservancy in 2016 for $14.5 million.

Its members called for a full Wilderness protection, and presented evidence that the majority of public comments espoused those sentiments.

“There are over 54,000 square miles of land in the state of New York — they’re asking for a few more acres,” Dawson said, noting he wasn’t addressing any particular group of advocates.

“They’re asking for something and I must be their voice.”

Five brothers in BSA Troop 30 all become Eagle Scouts

Father believes Scouts instill sense of citizenship

CHESTERTOWN | According to Boy Scout Troop 30 Scoutmaster Bill Jennings, only about 2 percent of Boy Scouts reach the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank one can reach as a scout.

All five of the sons of Dick and Theresa Hanaburgh of Chestertown became Eagle Scouts, with the youngest earning the rank in 2017.

“A guy from the district told me that was kind of like a record for there to be five brothers from same parents become Eagle Scouts,” Dick Hanaburgh Jr. said.

The trend started with Dick III, the oldest, and the other Hanaburgh boys followed. By the time Andy, the youngest, was old enough to join scouts, he had already been around

scouting for years.

“When Andy was a little kid he would go with my wife and I when the older boys would go to camp. Andy was in it virtually from the time he was born,” Hanaburgh said.

Hanaburgh said he made it through the Cub Scouts, but then he got busy working, “mowing lawns and that sort of thing.”

“I didn’t have time for Boy Scouts, but I wish I had. I had

a lot of friends that went on to be Eagle Scouts,” he said.

The Hanaburgh boys’ uncle, Jim Highm, had reached the rank of Life Scout, and he started working for the Boy Scouts of America after college. Highm’s brothers each became Eagle Scouts, and with that sort of influence in the family, the Hanaburgh boys naturally participated in scouting.

Their father became the Cubmaster to Cub Scout Pack 30 for a few years, and he filled in as Scoutmaster to Troop 30 for about a year. However, credits other scoutmasters for inspiring the scouts in Troop 30, inducing his own sons.

“They had some really cool scoutmasters who challenged them and built a pretty decent program,” he said.

Hanaburgh said retired New York State Trooper Joe Klewicki who served as scoutmaster for 12 to 14 years, and current scoutmaster Jennings, deserve a lot of the credit.

“He (Klewicki) was one of those kinds of guys who gets kids motivated, like a good coach. He inspired them to do stuff,” Hanaburgh said.

One of the challenges in reaching the rank of Eagle Scout involves completing an Eagle project. Hanaburgh said the Eagle Scout candidate must conceive the project, figure out a budget for the project, get it approved, and then reach out to the community for donations or funding to complete the project. The Eagle candidate has to take leadership of the project and see it through from start to finish.

“It’s quite a process. It takes from six months to a year complete and it’s a total team effort,” Hanaburgh said.

By the time Andy finished his project last spring, he had four older brothers who completed five Eagle Scout projects before their 18th birthday, which is a BSA requirement.

Along the way, Hanaburgh said, the Boy Scouts instilled a sense of citizenship in his sons, three of whom went on to serve in the military, and who immediately assumed some sort of leadership role, he said, because they were Eagle Scouts.

Hanaburgh said he would recommend Boys Scouts to any parents who have young boys. ■

Burghers win third straight Class D title WCS-BCS athletes now eligible for state qualifier

CAMBRIDGE | The Warrensburg-Bolton wrestling team won the 2017-18 Section II Class D championship Feb. 4, the third year in a row for such an accomplishment, and they posted their highest point-total ever in earning the crown.

The Burghers had 10 wrestlers competing in the finals, far more than all their opponents — and four of their athletes ended up champions.

Warrensburg-Bolton finished with 282 team points, about 90 points more than runner-up Galway, which posted 191 1/2 points. Salem-Cambridge placed third with 153.

Leading the Burghers were Class D champs Nolan McNeill at 182 pounds, Chris Wilson at 195, Jack Binder at 220 and Gary Hill at 285 who pinned his opponent from WhitehallFort Ann in a fast 3:01.

McNeill earned a definitive 12-4 decision over his opponent, also from the Railroaders. Wilson won a close 3-2 decision over a Granville wrestler, and Jack Binder, who is undefeated for the season at 32-0, won a 4-1 decision over his opponent from Whitehall-Fort Ann. Finishing second for the Burghers were Tanner McKenna at 99 pounds, Dylan Winchell at 106, Zach Carpenter at 120, Zack

Davis at 138, Hunter McKenna at 145 and Dan Monthony at 170.

Trevor Winchell was third at 132 pounds. Placing fourth were Dustin Reiter at 113 pounds and Chris Simpson at 152. Zach Shambo placed 5th at 126 pounds.

Wrestlers winning championships or placing 2nd through fourth will be advancing to the Section II state qualifying meet Saturday Feb. 10 at the Cool Arena in Glens Falls.

The state individual championship tournament will be held two weeks later in Albany’s Times Union Center.

All the other 11 teams entered in the Section II tourney had one or two champions and only one second place finisher, except for Fort Ann which had four runners-up.

Burgher coach Mark Trapasso said he was pleased he had 13 wrestlers earning eligibility for the state qualifier tournament this weekend.

“We’re on a great stretch now,” he said. “We’re winning and we’re enjoying it.”

Binder, a senior, said he was happy that the team was performing so well to cap off the 2017-18 season.

“We had a shaky beginning several months ago, but we pulled through,” he said. “This makes for a very memorable senior year.”

He said that crucial to his team’s success was its unorthodox pre-meet workouts as well as its grueling conditioning, which prepares the athletes to wrestle tough and outlast their opponents.

“Everything we do is the ‘next level,’” he said. “Rather than the traditional calisthenics at dual meets, we have these brawls for warmups — we mess around and have fun, battling to outdo each other.”

A Burgher wrestler since sixth grade, Binder said the Warrensburg coaches are not only quite strategic, they figure out through the years what each wrestler is good at, and they help each athlete build on those particular strengths.

Contributing to the score total was a lot of younger wrestlers on the team that wrestled tough, beating opponents with more maturity, Trapasso said.

“The whole team contributed,” he said. Younger Burgher athletes out-wrestling older opponents include 8th grader Dylan Winchell, freshman Zach Carpenter, and freshman Hunter McKenna.

Junior Chris Wilson, now with a 27-10 record, surpassed expectations, Trapasso said.

“He’s getting hot at just the right time now along with our other heavyweights,” Trapasso said, noting that middleweight Chris Simpson, a junior with a 23-12 record, is also peaking in February. “He’s in a good spot to score this weekend.”

Trapasso also had glowing praise for Gary Hill, who started wrestling only several years ago, but is now has a 37-1 season record and is ranked at the top of Section II. Hill recalled Saturday how Trapasso recruited him not that long ago.

“He just showed up at my door and asked me to wrestle. A day or so later, he wouldn’t let me leave school until I committed to join the team,” he said. “Then I showed up at a wrestling practice. I started working out with the team and I liked it.”

Hill credited his success to strategy that he’s learned, and a mental attitude of practicing hard and not accepting defeat.

“You’ve got to be tough and prepared for anything,” he said. ■

WarEagle wrestlers win Class C team title

STILLWATER | In a total team effort, the Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George wrestling team won the Section II Class C championship on Feb. 3.

Although the WarEagles have a lineup of experienced wrestlers, several younger athletes made key contributions to the team’s score, which gave them a narrow 15-point lead over the runner up, Watervliet.

After the victory, WarEagles Coach Larry Rounds he was particularly pleased with each of his wrestlers’ effort. In winning the championship, they edged out Watervliet, which had beaten the WarEagles earlier this season.

No less than seven WarEagles competed in the Class C finals. Finishing as champi-

ons in their weight classes were juniors Cody York, Will Mitcham and Logan Duers as well as senior Rich Conte. They wrestled at 160, 285, 145 and 170 pounds respectively.

Mitcham’s first-place win was particularly significant because he beat the No. 2 ranked wrestler in Section II at 285 pounds, Rounds said.

York, a veteran wrestler, won a highly competitive 2-1 battle for his title.

Placing second for the WarEagles were sophomore Mike Fuss at 126 pounds, freshman Justin Hoffman at 152, and senior Mike Sutliff at 182.

Rounds said Fuss’ performance was a “key factor” in the team’s win, as it was his first tournament finals appearance, and he lost by merely one point. Sutliff also lost a close match in the championship finals.

Gary Spotswood, a junior, also was crucial to the team win, as he’s been in and out of the lineup

this season in the middleweight slots behind Hoffman and Duers, yet he won third place as a double-entry for the team at 145 pounds.

Quinton Fox, an 8th grader, took fourth place at 120 pounds, Rounds said.

“This was Quinton’s first varsity tournament ever, and he picked a good time to step up,” Rounds said, noting that Fox was excited about his achievement. “Every match mattered in our team victory.”

This was the WarEagles first Class C title since 2015.

All the above wrestlers earned berths in the upcoming Section II state qualifier tournament, set for Saturday Feb. 10 in Glens Falls’ Cool Arena.

Two of Rounds’ wrestlers are No. 1 seeds in this state qualifier, two are ranked No. 2 and one has No. 4 status.

Nine WarEagles have qualified for the tournament, and at least five of them are likely to compete in the state tourney, Rounds said.

The state tournament is set for Feb. 24 in the Times Union Center in Albany.

“If they show up and perform on Saturday, good things are going to happen,” he said.

The core group of WarEagles, who exhibit their commitment to the sport by wrestling year-round, are determined to advance through the Section II competition Feb. 10 to compete in the state tournament, Rounds said.

“This is what they’ve dreamed of,” he said, noting that 10 WarEagles have advanced to the state tourney over the last three years.

Rounds added that he’s confident they’ll prevail.

“North Country kids are rugged, he said.

“They have that fighting spirit.” ■

Bolton’s Pratt caps historic week

BOLTON LANDING | In a win over MVAC Northern Division for Seton Catholic Feb. 2, Bolton’s star center Maddie Pratt helped set two benchmarks for her career and in Section VII. In scoring her 1,000th point of her career, Pratt capped off a week where as many players hit the sacred scoring mark than in any year since records had been recorded.

Pratt joined AuSable Valley’s Joel Martineau, Plattsburgh High’s Andrew Cutaiar, Moriah’s Joey Stahl, Northern Adirondack’s Paige Chilton and Seton Catholic’s Gretchen Zalis as one of seven players who reached 1,000 points in the seven day span.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Pratt said after the game. “I’ve been working really hard during the season and off season starting four years ago when I was in 8th grade. It’s pretty great to have this. It was defiantly a team effort. We had four and five scorers, basically the whole team scored, rebounds and steals. They look for me sometimes extra inside. They were always there to help me and encourage me.”

“I’ve known Maddie since she was in the fifth grade,” said coach

Luke Schweikert. “I’ve to know her not only as a teacher but as a coach. She brings a lot of joy to me not only in the classroom, but on the court as well. Maddie has never brought up the 1,000 career points to me. I had to pull her to the side and talk to her about it.

She was one of those kids who we never left in during garbage time or when there are really big leads. She is a really good passer and looks for the open girls. It’s been a real joy to be a part of this.”

With a 58-39 win over Seton Catholic, the Lady Eagles kept hold of the inside track for the Feb. 16 MVAC championship game, while giving Division I’s Westport breathing room ahead of the Lady Knights. ■ — Jill Lobdell contributed to this story

Marvin Raymond Gonyo

MINERVA | Marvin Raymond Gonyo was born on June 16, 1937 and passed away on Jan. 27, 2018 at his home in Minerva.

He was the son of the late Raymond and Elsie (DuPrey) Gonyo.

On Sept. 14, 1957 Marvin married Joyce Steele of North Creek.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Joyce Gonyo, who passed away on Jan. 4, 2018, and son Daniel James Gonyo.

He is survived by his children, Joseph Gonyo and his wife Patty of Olmstedville; Debra Hurley of Plattsburgh and David Gonyo of Minerva. He is also survived by Brenda and husband Casey Prosser of Pottersville; SueAnne and husband Michael Sheedy of Florida; and James Gonyo and wife Erin of Minerva, as well as several grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Donations may be made in Marvin’s memory to the High Peaks Hospice.

2) Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate to the vehicles operated or otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job.
