Warren County: ‘healthiest’ in New York
STORM RAVAGES AREA 163,000 without power By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
Health studies show varying conclusions By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
GLENS FALLS | Warren County is ranked as the “No. 1 healthiest county” in New York, according to a new study released by voro. com, a website that refers people to doctors and publishes articles on health. The enterprise ranks Warren County’s “health index” as 18 percent higher than the state average, and within the 98th percentile among all counties in the U.S. The factors examined in the health rankings by voro.com include rates of activity and exercise, smoking, life expectancy, obesity, health insurance coverage, access to medical care and exercise opportunities, as well as prevailing air pollution statistics. This new ranking contrasts dramatically with a cancer study released by the state Health Department which reported that the county had the highest rate in the state of all common cancers combined, based on data reported by health care facilities from 2011 to 2015. After focusing on four counties with excessive cancer rates for a second phase of the research, the Health Department study concluded that tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, poor nutrition and HPV (human papillomavirus) infection were contributing factors to the elevated cancer rates in Warren County.
Last weekend’s destructive storm brought down a tree on top of a Thurman town highway truck that was occupied by a town employee. It was reported that the person was rescued by Thurman firefighters. The storm, which started on Feb. 7 and continued through Feb. 8, cut off power to about 163,000 households and businesses across six counties, leaving tens of thousands of area residents without heat — many of them also without phone service or Internet access.
WARREN COUNTY | A destructive snow and ice storm, considered the most devastating in recent history, brought down trees on roadways and utility lines across six counties, cutting power to as many as 163,000 people. The storm left thousands of residents across Warren, Essex, Hamilton, Washington and Saratoga counties without heat or power in their homes. Many fired up generators, while others sought refuge in warming shelters set up in more than a dozen fire stations and town halls throughout the southern Adirondacks. Telephone service and internet access were also cut off for many thousands of people in the region. In various rural areas, roadways were blocked for hours; while houses and vehicles were damaged by falling trees. Residents drove to neighbors in their community, making sure others, particularly the elderly and those with medical issues, were safe. Highways were slick at various times, stranding some vehicles and causing collisions. The storm, which left about half the homes and businesses in Warren County without power, moved through the area beginning mid-Friday. The mixture of snow and freezing rain — in some places accompanied by strong winds — weighed down branches and felled trees. The storm continued Saturday, with temperatures plunging to sub-zero levels — about minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit in Horicon and minus 27 degrees in Lake Placid.

‘Krazy’ sled race in Chester next weekend Residents are urged to enter By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
Two area youths pilot a truck-on-skis they crafted toward the finish line in the 2017 edition of Chestertown’s Krazy Downhill Derby. Featuring fanciful and creative sleds, the annual race is to be held this year from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22. Courtesy photo
CHESTER | For generations, a wacky sled race has prompted fun, good humor and camaraderie among local residents — while entertaining area visitors. This year’s edition of the Krazy Downhill Derby is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Dynamite Hill Recreation Area on Route 8, in Chestertown.
For 56 years, area adults and children have crafted zany sleds, primitive to expertly crafted, to ride down the Dynamite Hill ski slope. Whether it was a mock pirate ship, purple dragon, helicopter, or race car, considerable creativity has routinely been employed in construction. Again this year, a division for children riding sleds of cardboard construction is featured. This week, area youth gathered at the YMCA Adirondack Center near Brant Lake to build their own sleds for the race. A $5 entry fee is charged for all sleds, and up to four riders are allowed. Helmets are required for all riders. See KRAZY DOWNHILL DERBY » pg. 2

This research indicated that Warren County residents were more likely to be current smokers, and that a “significantly higher percentage of women in the county were overweight or obese.” The data, however, indicated that while county residents had less healthy lifestyles overall, they were more likely to engage in physical activities and had better health care coverage. This state Health Department study concluded that environmental factors were not causing the elevated cancer rates in Warren County. When the Health Department’s research results were released last October, a number of people have questioned the study’s methodology and conclusions for a variety of reasons, including the fact that the research didn’t take into account where the people spent most of their lives. The favorable voro.com study calculated access to exercise facilities and opportunities as well as reported use of leisure time. To determine the “access to medical care,” the study considered the ratio of primary care providers to residents. To measure prevailing air pollution, this study compared

The voro.com study was based on information from various sources including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the National Center for Health Statistics, the U.S. Census Bureau, the Environmental Public Health Tracking Network and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.
Adirondack Architectural H e r i t a g e C EO Ste ve n Engelhart is to present an interactive program on Warrensburg’s historically significant architecture and how the community might take action to preserve it for future generations. The program is scheduled for 7 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 27, at Lizzie Keays Restaurant.
U.S. NEWS: LESS HEART DISEASE IN WARREN COUNTY
A health ranking compiled by U.S. News & World Report offers another perspective, concluding that Warren County residents are likely to live one year longer than average across the U.S., yet their smoking rate was 17% higher than average, and the cancer raters were 25% higher than the national average. Echoing the voro.com conclusions about access to medical care, the U.S. News study cites that availability of primary care doctors was 62 percent higher than the national average, and hospital bed availability was more than double the national average. Favorable conclusions from U.S. News also includes that heart disease among Medicare enrollees in Warren County was about 9 percent lower than the national average — and about 18 percent lower than the statewide average. ■

Hudson Headwaters Health Network’s anchor facility Warrensburg Health Center is one of no less than 11 health centers operated by HHHN in Warren County — and Hudson Headwaters’ prevalence in the county is undoubtedly a key factor in the county’s top ranking in a newly-released survey which concluded that Warren County was the ‘healthiest’ in New York State. Also, a U.S. News survey noted that the availability of primary doctors in Warren County was 62 percent higher than the national average, and Hudson Headwaters is a substantial factor in that favorable statistic. Emergency warming shelters were opened across the region for area residents without heat. They included shelters at fire stations in Warrensburg, Bolton, Chestertown, Horicon, Lake George, North Creek, Lake George, North River, Pottersville, Schroon Lake and Queensbury. Shelters were also opened at both the Lake George and Hadley-Luzerne elementary schools, as well as the Thurman town hall and the North Warren Emergency Squad headquarters in Chester. Brian Angell of Thurman was one of the thousands left without power and heat for about two days. Saturday evening, Angell described his situation, huddled under covers to keep warm despite his small propane heater raising his home’s temperature a few degrees.

Lake Luzerne resident Lauren Wittenberg was without power for several days. Mid-day Saturday, she said that her family had no electricity and no running water. She said that as a precaution before storms move in, she and her husband fill their bathtub with water as an emergency water supply. With phone and cable service cut off, they depended on smartphones over the weekend to stay connected with the world, charging them in their vehicles. Using her iPhone, she noted the storm’s destruction along local roadways. “Living in the woods with all the big pine trees, it’s scary driving down the road worried that limbs may fall on the car,” she texted on her smartphone. “There are so many large branches down, it’s scary and a mess.” Angell noted that in areas throughout Thurman, cell service was not available, leaving people out of touch with the rest of the world. Angell and Rob Shepler, also of Thurman, reported that a utility pole on Bowen Hill Road had been snapped, leaving a transformer dangling. Shepler commented on Facebook

As of late January, five board seats were open. Engelhart noted this week that he and society officials are planning to hold a follow-up meeting, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, to inform owners of historic homes about the funding sources available for maintenance and preservation of such buildings, including those listed on the National Register. that he was concerned that the transformer might be leaking, polluting a nearby pond. Saturday morning, Rose Crusie of Thurman posted a photo on Facebook of a tree on top of a Thurman town highway truck, noting that its driver had been rescued by Thurman firefighters. Kathy Templeton reported Saturday from her house via Facebook that phone and electric service were cut off. She said that trees had fallen on roadways throughout Thurman, and that Andy and their son Nolan were unable to get home Friday evening, and they stayed in Thurman. “I’m thankful that I bought Andy a generator for Father’s Day last year,” she said, noting that she had heard that electric service might be restored as late as Monday. Area stores reported to news media that they had sold out of generators early in the weekend. Gary Martin of Thurman reported via Facebook Messenger late Saturday that he fired up his generator with the help of a neighbor, so he could operate is outdoor wood furnace that heats his home. “Most folks here have wood stoves and generators — and we have kerosene lamps that have been passed down from my grandparents and parents,” he said, adding that over the weekend, he and his wife Winifred were cooking on their wood stove. They had heard forecasts of the storm, and had drawn fresh water for drinking and cooking from their well, and had filled several five-gallon pails with water for flushing their toilet. National Grid reported that as of late Sunday night, power had been restored to all but about 2,000 utility customers in Warren County. ■

Warren County considers centralized composting

Pending state law to affect area restaurants By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | Prompted by local environmental advocates, Warren County officials are now considering establishing a centralized composting facility where food waste as well as brush and leaves can be deposited and processed. The Warren County Environmental Concerns Committee discussed such a proposal on Jan. 24 in light of a pending law that will require grocery stores, restaurants and some institutions to send their inedible food waste to a composting facility if one exists within 25 miles. Also, donation of leftover food to charity will be necessary if it is edible. The law takes effect in 2020. Diane Collins of the sustainability advocacy group Tri-County Transition said at the meeting she and others were researching the amount of food waste produced by various entities in the county.
Diane Collins, a member of the sustainability advocacy group Tri-County Transition, told Warren County officials this week that she and others support establishing a centralized county compositing facility that would take in and process food waste as well as leaves and brush — as a pending state law will be banning food scraps from being deposited in landfills. Photo by Thom Randall
“We feel it would be a very useful goal for the county to establish a composting facility,” she said, offering to work with the county on the initiative. “We’re focusing on zero waste.” Committee chair Claudia Braymer said that Glens Falls was now needlessly spending
SITE IN WARRENSBURG OR LAKE GEORGE SUGGESTED
“The county should be looking at establishing a site for brush and food waste or sharing a location for composting,” she said, mentioning the towns of Warrensburg or Lake George as potential sites. County Supervisor Brad Magowan said that the county could compost materials at the brush and leaves dump on Upper Sherman Avenue in Queensbury, a site owned by Glens Falls that is presently inactive. Supervisor Strough expressed his doubts about the initiative. “We do grind up our leaves and brush, but nobody wants it,” he said. “We’ve got a huge pile — there’s no market for it.” Warrensburg Supervisor Kevin Geraghty noted that his town had a large amount of brush and leaves, and was discussing obtaining a tub grinder to process the material and compost it, then offer it at no charge for residents and businesses for landscaping. “I think it’s important,” he said about collaborative composting. Geraghty has previously suggested that towns could bring their brush to a centralized location to have it ground up, as rental of a tub grinder can cost as much as $4,500 per day. Mary Beth Wagner of Glens Falls advised the committee that the process of composting food waste is most efficient when it is combined with leaves and ground-up brush. “Combining food waste with a carbon source — that’s what creates a healthy and viable compost,” she said. Wagner then suggested that county residents consider composting leaves themselves in their own backyards to save time and transportation as well as taxpayer money. “How do we change the mind-set that municipalities bear the burden of leaf and brush collection?” she said. Stony Creek Supervisor Frank Thomas — who now serves as chairman of the county Board of Supervisors — offered a similar thought, adding that county residents likely need education on how to compost their own waste. Town of Johnsburg Supervisor Andrea Hogan said she supported the ideas presented at the meeting. “I’m absolutely a fan of community composting,” she said. “But we need to look at where the majority of food scraps are produced — A lot more research is needed.” ■

Each week as I sit down in front of the computer screen to offer some perspective on current aff airs, my goal is twofold. From this simple businessman’s perch, I hope to offer an optimistic approach to the future and try to give readers something to think about from a different perspective. In this age of sharp division, there appears to be little interest in the “middle ground” or opportunities to seek compromise. The old theory used to be when running for office Democrats would move to the left and Republicans to the right during the primaries to obtain their parties’ nomination. Then move to the center once the final election race was on since that’s where the race was won or lost. The differences between how to address the issues facing the country were not that far apart in past years. Unlike “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, where one bed is too hard, the other bed was too soft, and the last one was just right, I wonder if we’ve lost sight of “just right”? There are so many special interests and varying positions on all those interests one has to wonder what our future has in store. The goals and priorities of each party are not just at odds with each other they don’t even agree on what they are. With the country so polarized now, after the impeachment trials and State of the Union speech, it seems pretty clear that President Trump and House Speaker Pelosi appear to be at wit’s end. While it would appear that Republicans and Democrats would be lining up after their leaders but both sides seem to have splintering factions who are not pleased with the direction of their parties. The path to the nominations for the Democrats appears very cloudy after the debacle in Iowa and while Republicans claim to be in lockstep behind the President, he continues to provide self-inflicted damage causing party faithful reason to doubt the “four more years” mantra. Clearly, there is no consensus leader on the horizon, which only means more disruption, feuding, future investigations, and possible impeachment trials regardless of which party successfully claims the White House, Congress or the Senate in the upcoming election. Our future rests on what we can agree on, and right now we can’t agree on much. ■ — Dan Alexander is publisher of Sun Community News.

To the Editor: I had applied for a job with the Census last fall and got the job, but found out how messed up they were when I resigned. Now we find that the state is just as bad, or worse. This article in the Sun tells a story that has an open ending. The point being is the moving of the gold post being done to help someone at the expense of someone else. It’s our money that they are manipulating, and to look at 650 people being worth over 10 years in the neighborhood of $20 million dollars in today’s figures. I live in the town of Horicon and 650 is almost half of the full time registered population. So to those who think I belong to one of the two main parties, I’m an Independence party member and vote that way, trying to put the best person I see as fitted to the job. Today, that is almost impossible to know, as there is no good way to fact check any of the candidates. I do not trust the Government to do anything to help the people. — Pat Farrell, Horicon ■

WARRENSBURG | The Warren County Sheriff ’s Office is alerting the public to an ongoing telephone scam targeting area residents. In recent weeks, unnamed suspects identifying themselves as local police have called potential victims, advising them that their money is unsafe in their bank accounts and that they should withdraw it and transfer it to gift cards, and then reveal the accompanying I.D. numbers to these “police.” Other common schemes involve scammers claiming to be Social Security Administration representatives. The takeaway: never provide personal or financial information over the telephone and avoid taking calls from unknown numbers. ■

North Creek Shuttle service expands to aid local residents By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | The shuttle service that’s been carrying passengers to and from tourist destinations in North Creek is now expanding to transport local residents to downtown North Creek and to the Adirondack Community Outreach Center on Rte. 8 in Johnsburg. This extension of shuttle service started this week, primarily to the Outreach Center — with the primary intent to bring town of Johnsburg residents to the center for its food pantry sessions. These are held early afternoon on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. To secure such rides, residents can call the outreach center at (518) 251-3481 by 5 p.m. the day before the trip is to occur.

service would boost the quality of life for many Johnsburg residents. “This new service is really exciting,” she said. “Not only will the shuttle take workers and visitors to Gore Mountain and back, but it will make life easier for a lot of local residents who don’t have transportation — It’s hard for many people in our rural town to get to where they need to go. We’re hoping a lot of residents take advantage of this service.” Outreach Center Executive Director Andie Waldron and Goodspeed both credited former center board member Judy Brown for her years of work to extend the shuttle service. Launched in 2011 by the North Creek Business Alliance, the The shuttle service has continued to date under their sponsorship. Last year, the shuttle service was hampered by aging vehicles, but the Adirondack
LOW COST GOVERNMENT ENTERTAINMENT
I find that listening to the nightly news these days is much more amusing that reading a good book. The late, great showman P.T. Barnum used to brag that his freak show, organized in 1881, was the “greatest show on earth.” If he were alive today he would reluctantly have to bow his head and agree to take second place to the ongoing show that is currently going on in 2020 at our government’s White House. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi piously said on Feb. 6, 2020 TV, after she tore up a copy of President Trump’s speech to Congress, “I am always dignified, I have shown every respect and I pray for the president every night!” Personally, I totally believe her about the praying part. I feel that she prays that President Trump should leave immediately for Hades (I can’t say “Hell” in a family newspaper) and partake of the soul cleansing heat being generated there for diabolic sinners. I also believe that he surely might pray for her also. He could hope that if he were to arrive early at that unearthly spot, he would find her sitting on a hot rock awaiting him with a therapeutic muzzle over her mouth. It just could be that our Nancy has been reading the biography of the mighty Russian Empress, Catherine the great. Catherine had her accomplice, Grigority Alexsandrovich Potemkin and Nancy currently has her devoted good buddy, cohort, ally, colleague and confidant Adam Schiff to commiserate with her and supposedly plot our future with here in America. I am reminded of Shakespeare’s words in his play, King Lear, when he wrote, “Get thee glass eyes and like a scurvy politician, seem to see the things thou doest not.” Today, Feb. 8, 2020, the great snow storm has robbed me of the use of my television and I am being sorely deprived of the next chapter of this American saga. I can hardly wait for the next act of this mesmerizing political chess game. Shakespeare also said, “Look what fools these mortals be.”

has for some time indeed been ominous and whacky. Looking back at our planet’s weather history, this is nothing new considering the great ice age that started it all and ravished the planet a million years ago. Than there was the time, as the Bible tells it, that Noah had to build a boat in a hurry. This year, after a cold, miserable winter that seemed to have no end, I saw my snow plow man more often than I can ever remember, while the fake news printed in the big city newspapers, whose writers have never sat foot in Warrensburg, tells us that it has been an unseasonable warm winter. When January finally came to an end it was high time to hope for a thaw and dream about better days ahead. That was about the time we were informed we were going to have another “little snow storm.” In all the years I have survived on this earth I have never seen a storm quite like it. On Feb. 8, 2020, tens of thousands of local residents were deprived of electric power, heat and light and warming stations were set up as everyone buckled up and settled down to wait for the worst to happen. I lost my telephone, lights, heat and computer to have it come on and than later go back out and than on again once more. God bless the Warrensburg Fire Company who opened their doors wide to welcome any needy person to come in and warm up. For four days the local “Meals on wheels” good people have been unable to bring much needed food to the elderly in need because of the impassable ice and more than a foot of snow as their saintly volunteers tried in vain to battle against the elements. On Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, my son called me from Chestertown where he had lost power on his property there by the river and he worried about frozen water pipes. He told me how much worse it was up there in an eerie quiet white world with heavily frozen tree branches lying on the ground and TV repair men, electricity repair workers and road crews working frantically to put our world back together again. Actually as I look out my window and see the bend in the Schroon River behind my house traveling west, I see a white, quiet world, covered with thick ice and snow, a world that has never looked more beautiful or more deadly. Today I will read my new book on global warming to see just what the experts predict for our future. I can’t wait to see my first dandelion. ■

Lake George refines its approach as it nears post-season North Warren extends its streak of wins By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
Guarded by Granville’s Jarett Williams, Lake George center Luke Pelchar, a junior, drives toward the basket during a game held Feb. 5 on the Warriors’ court. Lake George lost 75-70, but rebounded two days later to defeat Hadley-Luzerne 78-53, avenging a 43-57 loss to the Eagles weeks beforehand. Tightened play to minimize fouls, as well as patient offense were responsible for the Warriors’ late-season resurgence. See sports coverage at suncommunitynews.com for details. Photo by Jenn March

LAKE GEORGE | Ending their 2019-2020 regular season on a high note, the Lake George Boys basketball team employed smooth teamwork and consistent defense to defeat rival Hadley-Luzerne by a score of 78-53. Avenging a 43-57 loss last month to the Eagles, the Warriors’ victory demonstrated that they have the potential to go far in the post-season. Coach Blake White noted that his team is now avoiding fouling while maintaining defensive pressure — and on offense, players are working the ball inside more, rather than taking dubious shots from outside. “We’re more patient now to get good shots,” Blake said. “On defense, we’re trying to clean it up; we’re working better as a group — making it tough, without fouling, for opponents to score.” The efficiency of the Warriors defense was reflected in the fact that the Eagles sank more three-pointers than they did two-point field goals. Leading all scorers for Lake George was 6-feet-6 junior center Luke Pelchar with 29 points and 8 rebounds. He was followed by sophomore guard/forward Cameron Orr with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists; junior guard/forward Cole Clarke with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists; sophomore shooting guard Julius Moffitt with 10 points; and senior guard Juan Garcia with 8 points and 3 assists. Contributing were junior power forward Torin Davies with 4 points, senior power forward Shane Clarke with 2 points and senior
guard Hunter Rounds with 2. Top scorers for Hadley-Luzerne were Danny McMahon with 29 points and Donny Harder with 15. White said he and the players expect to experience success in the upcoming Class C sectional tournament. “Throughout the season, we’ve been struggling to put everything together, and we’ve finally done it,” he said. “If we continue to play smart and patient, we should be fine.” he said.
COUGARS CONTINUE TO DOMINATE
North Warren extended its winning streak to four games Feb. 8 by defeating Salem 71-68 in the Cougars’ final regular-season Adirondack League game. Hotshot junior point guard Anthony Girard shot from all over the court to score 42 points — one of his most productive offensive performances of his career. A versatile athlete, Girard sank 5 threepointers, and 7 inside the arc. He drew double-digit fouls, which led to him scoring no less than 13 foul shots. Girard was followed in his scoring by junior center Tanner Dunkley with 13 points — Dunkley has served as the inside anchor for the Cougars for years. Contributing in scoring were Nate Hopper with 10 points — eight of which were scored on foul shots — and Ryan Miller hitting sinking foul shots and a field goal for 6 points. Eli Truehart was top scorer for Salem with 22 points. Adding an exclamation point for the night was North Warren’s Junior Varsity squad winning their game. With the win, North Warren’s varsity is 12-2 in the Adirondack League and 16-2 overall — and fans are energized about the team’s prospects in the post-season. ■

important in winter months,” he said. Waldron said the additional shuttle services will fulfill a vital need among many Johnsburg residents. “This will allow a lot of people without transportation to ‘get out get about’ and be more active in the community,” she said. “It’s phenomenal.” ■

BURGHERS WIN CLASS D CHAMPIONSHIP
During the Section II Class D Sectional wrestling tournament F eb. 8 , Bur g her s ophomor e Tanner McKenna leverages an opponent toward a pin. In the tourney, four Warrensburg athletes won championships, and a total of 11 WCS wrestlers placed in the top four in their respective weight classes. Tanner — 29-9 f or t he year — w on s e cond place, and his brother Hunter — 36-1 this season — won f irst place, along side teammates Jacob Clear, Zach Carpenter and Zach Olden. Warrensburg won the 2020 Class D team championship — and their roster ’s depth and talent was credited for their title.
WCS wrestlers advance By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WHITEHALL | Warrensburg wrestling coach Mark Trapasso had warned his athletes not to take a Section II Class D championship for granted. He stressed that they’d have to be mentally tough and determined for the Burghers to win their fifth straight team title. On Feb. 8, the WCS wrestlers were focused and tenacious — and they indeed won the Class D team championship. “This puts an exclamation point on our season,” Trapasso said several hours after his wrestlers’ many matches ended on Saturday. “Hallelujah!” Warrensburg earned 232 points to lead the 12 teams competing. Duanesburg was second with 206 points. Winning Class D championships in their weight classes were senior Jacob Clear at 285 pounds; junior Hunter McKenna at 152 pounds; junior Zach Carpenter at 138 pounds; and eighth grader Zach Olden, 99 pounds, who had been seeded third. Winning second place were freshman Tristen Hitchcock, sophomore Tanner McKenna and sophomore Dylan Winchell at 195, 132 and 126 pounds respectively. Placing third were Joe Murdick at 170 pounds; Landian Templeton at 113 pounds and Cameron Carpenter at 106. Placing fourth was Zach Shambo at 138 pounds. Shambo had been seeded first alongside Jacob Clear and Hunter McKenna. Zach Olden had been seeded third — and Trapasso said he was particularly impressed by Olden surpassing expectations. “Zach had two tight matches and then faced a kid from Duanesburg in the finals,” Trapasso recalled. “Duanesburg was on our heels, and Zach’s win opened up the lead,” the coach said. To win their championship titles, Olden pinned Duanesburg’s Scott Nicolella in 3:32, Zach Carpenter pinned James Colvin of Maple Hill in 3:14, Hunter McKenna won

a 4-0 decision over Troy Austin of WhitehallFort Ann, and Clear defeated Railroader Spencer Dickinson 8-4. Trapasso said that winning the team championship took effort from all his wrestlers. Going into the finals, Duanesburg was only 16 points behind, and if a few matches had different outcomes, the Burghers would have been runners-up. “The kids knew what they had to do, and they really stepped up Saturday,” he said. “This is very satisfying.” Trapasso said his athletes have gained considerable skill and expertise this season. “This year has not been easy — it took a lot of hard work to get where we are,” he said. “There were 11 other schools that wanted to do what we did Saturday, and I am not only thrilled, but I feel a sense of relief. This championship is big — I’m so happy for our athletes.” Next up for the Burghers is the Section II state qualifier tournament, set for Saturday Feb. 15 in the Cool Insuring Arena — and all 11 Burgher wrestlers who placed first through fourth will be competing. ■

The three champion WarEagles were junior Justin Hoffman at 152 pounds, senior Cameron Duers at 220 pounds and senior Mike Fuss at 160 pounds. In the finals round, Hoffman pinned Jesse Davies of Catskill, Duers defeated Seth Dillworth of Coxsackie-Athens 9-2, and Fuss defeated Tamarac’s Tyler Filarecki 5-1. “These three athletes are wrestling smart and aggressive, as well as taking calculated risks,” he said. “They are also showing leadership, and they’re peaking at the right time this year.” Placing third for the WarEagles were sophomore Logan Marissal at 195 pounds, sophomore Carter McIntosh at 120 ~~7ai1tldrll8( s:"TIC> NAL RVICES , pounds, and sophomore Caleb Carpenter at 113 pounds. ~ --Freshman Grace York placed fourth at 106 pounds. Placing fifth were eighth-grader Gavin McCabe, freshman Colby Hanna and senior Colby Hoolihan. Coach Duers praised these eight place-winners for their skill development and hard work this season. Duers said he was particularly pleased with Marissal for his accomplishments considering that until recently, he had -~-- - - as well as the flu. been sidelined for weeks due to an injury York, Duers said, has worked hard this year to develop strength and skills — she came into Saturday’s tournament with an very substantial 8-10 record. “Our team has a core of solid veterans and a lot of younger athletes who are coming along quite well,” Duers said. Next up for the WarEagles is the Section II state qualifier
