Ex-Speculator Village ClerkTreasurer charged with grand larceny

Zebra mussel larvae found in state’s largest hatchery

Staff Report SPECULATOR | The former clerk-treasurer of Speculator village was charged with grand larceny and corrupting the government for allegedly scamming the municipality out of many thousands of dollars worth of health insurance benefits for her family, state Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced Feb. 25.

Bonnie Page, who retired from the village June 1, is charged with using her official position to have the village pay $$25,988 for optional insurance coverage for her family without official permission, and without making the benefit available for all village employees. Page allegedly hid these payments from the Village Board of Trustees to conceal her actions, the state agency said.

Page was arraigned on Feb. 25 before Judge Gordon L. Purdy II and is due back in Lake Pleasant Town Court on April 28, according to the Comptroller’s office.

Efforts to reach Page’s attorney weren’t successful as of noon March 2. ■

March 7 fundraising event for Donald Prosser Man burned in Warrensburg home fire

WARRENSBURG | Donald Prosser of Warrensburg suffered serious injuries several months ago in a fire, and his family members and friends are holding a fundraising event to help pay for medical and living expenses he’s since been incurring due to his hospitalization.

Prosser, a 25-year-old carpenter, has been unable to work since he suffered third-degree burns on his right hand and left foot Dec. 28 in a kitchen fire.

Prosser is a 2013 graduate of North Warren High School, and he attended Warrensburg Central into his pre-teen years.

A benefit spaghetti dinner — featuring raffles, a silent auction and recorded music — is to be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday March 7 at Echo Lake Lodge, 175 Hudson St., in Warrensburg.

Donald’s mother, Regina Prosser of Adirondack said he’s being treated intermittently at Westchester Medical Centers Trauma and Burn Unit after an initial two-week hospitalization which included skin grafts and other surgery.

Donald Prosser is now treated as an outpatient at the center with appointments once per week until his injuries are healed, and the round trip is more than four and a half hours, she said. Just last week, his recovery had a setback with skin infections that are now being treated, Regina Prosser said.

Village renews effort to erect fire tower Site in Charles Wood Park

LAKE GEORGE | Lake George Village’s application for a state grant to erect an Adirondack fire tower as a tourist attraction in Charles Wood Park was declined last year, and municipal officials and planners have wondered why.

Village mayor Robert Blais may have revealed the answer recently.

Blais told village board members that in a conference call he shared with representatives of the state Secretary of State’s office, officials had said that it was rejected because the village didn’t have a state Waterfront Revitalization Plan in force.

This plan was submitted to the state eight years ago by Elan Planning, but it hadn’t been approved by the state.

“When we had applied for the grant for Wood Park, the application lost a lot of points without that plan being formally approved,” Blais said. “Now the state is insisting on Waterfront Revitalization Plan approvals before municipalities get grant funding,” he said.

A fire tower similar to this one atop Hurricane Mountain may be a tourist attraction in Lake George’s Charles Wood Park in several years, since the Lake George Village Board recently renewed an initiative to obtain a historic one installed in the park at a cost of $150,000 or so.

“I had thought that the grant for the fire tower was a ‘sure thing,’” he added. “Somehow the Waterfront Revitalization Plan approval got lost in the shuffle — it was the state’s fault.”

Blais said he had contacted Lisa Nagle of Elan Planning, and she took partial responsibility for not making sure the plan had been endorsed prior to the grant application.

In response, Nagle has proposed that Lake George’s Waterfront Revitalization plan be updated, expanded and resubmitted to the state, Blais said, noting she had submitted a quote of $4,700 for the work.

The village trustees approved an appropriation for Elan Planning to accomplish the task.

Blais said that having an approved Waterfront Revitalization in place would be vital in obtaining grants that would pay for various future enhancements to the village.

The rejected grant application was to acquire an historic Adirondack fire tower — one that’s believed to be the state’s first fire tower made of steel — and have it reassembled and erected in the park for about $150,000.

The tower had been standing in the Adirondack Park from 1917 to 1977 near what is now Northway Exit 30.

The 40-foot-tall tower had been disassembled and restored by a man near Plattsburgh who last year made an offer to reconstruct it in the park.

Village and county officials have envisioned the historic fire tower as a major new attraction that would introduce area visitors to a revered century-old tradition in upstate New York, and serve as a historical artifact for local students, helping them learn how for decades, fire rangers were able to preserve millions of acres of wild forest. ■

has granted the New York’s request for a Physical Disaster Declaration for three counties impacted by last year’s Halloween storm, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced last week.

The storm caused more than $10 million in damages in local communities and affected nearly 400 homes, businesses and nonprofits. Essex, Herkimer and Oneida Counties are included in the declaration, and the contiguous counties of Clinton, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Lewis, Madison, Montgomery, Oswego, Otsego, St. Lawrence, Warren and Washington are also eligible for the program.

Under the declaration, impacted individuals, families, businesses and nonprofits in eligible counties can now apply for low-interest loans from the Small Business Administration to aid in their recovery.

“I’m glad our federal partners at the SBA have made these low interest loans an option for New Yorkers affected by the devastating Halloween storm,” Cuomo said in a media statement. “At the same time, it’s extremely disappointing that FEMA denied our request for emergency funding for the three hundred homeowners impacted by the floods. When natural disasters strike, the federal government and FEMA in particular need to step up and help.”

FEMA approved reimbursement for damage caused to municipalities, but not to individuals.

State and federal response teams did confirm that there was major damage to 145 homes and 29 businesses totaling $5.6 million and $1.5 million respectively, as well as minor damage to 193 homes and 17 businesses/nonprofits totaling $2.6 million and $380,000, respectively.

The following groups may be eligible for help from SBA loans: Homeowners, up to $200,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate; homeowners and renters, up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property; business owners, up to $2 million for the replacement of real estate, inventories, machinery, equipment and other physical losses; businesses and nonprofits, Economic Injury Disaster Loans of up to $2 million to provide necessary working capital until normal operations resume after a disaster.

Youngsters learn fruitful art skills

Small Tales Learning Center has converted to a non-profit entity and has partnered with the Glens Falls Family YMCA, a move which is likely to bolster programming as well as enhancing affordability of Small Tales’ services. The center presently hosts about 90 children from six weeks to 12 years old, providing attentive care and stimulating educational programs. POLICE BLOTTER Glens Falls woman charged with more than $80,000 in larceny GLENS FALLS | On Feb. 24, the New York State Police arrested a Glens Falls woman for larceny, second degree.

Michelle Marlow, 47, allegedly used her employer’s commercial credit cards for personal purchases totaling more than $80,000; most of the purchases were for gift cards and household items from Lowe’s and Home Depot taking place over the course of 11 months. Marlow turned herself in at the State Police headquarters in Wilton and was processed. Released her own recognizance, Marlow is due in court on April 20. ■

ADIRONDACK PARK | Two iconic area stores ,where local residents and visitors alike can get all sorts of vital wares, have been named as top destinations by UpstateNewYork.com.

Adirondack General Store, located in the hamlet of Adirondack in Warren County and Hoss’s General Store in Long Lake, Hamilton County, were both named to the website’s list of “Twelve Terrific OldTime General Stores in Upstate NY You’ll Want to Visit.”

The web-base magazine praised these two for their selection of wares and their historic charm.

They were the general stores in the region so awarded. Another venue, Old Forge Hardware Store in Herkimer County, was the only other store in the Adirondack Park so recognized.

UpstateNY.com writer Chjuck D’Imperio called Hoss’s General Store an “absolute ‘must-stop’ if you are within a canoe paddle’s distance of Long Lake,” noting its camp supplies, wool blankets and Adirondack items.

The website praised Adirondack general store for its wide range of merchandise, noting it was established in 1855. Imperio wrote that the store carried “everything you would expect an Adirondack general store to have” including fishing tackle, real Adirondack chairs, beer, locally carved bears, boat rentals, and more.

Not mentioned on the list, but awarded by other websites and travel writers, is Chestertown’s Crossroads Store which carries a remarkable array of merchandise, clothing and sporting goods as well as camp supplies — and a cafe. ■

Regina Prosser said that on Dec. 28, her son was ice fishing on Brant Lake, returned to his Schroon Lake Road home in Warrensburg to fry up some of his catch, and burned his hand and foot while attempting to extinguish a grease fire in his kitchen, which was damaged in the incident.

Girard passes 1,000 career points

STILLWATER | Although it required a total team effort from the North Warren Basketball team to earn their tournament victory over St. Johnsville on Feb. 29, shooting guard Anthony Girard achieved a personal milestone as he surpassed his 1,000th career point.

The Cougars won this Section II Class D quarterfinal game by a score of 80-59.

Girard, a junior who’s been averaging more than 21 points per game this year, scored 27 points — including five treys — while grabbing five rebounds and executing five assists against Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville.

Midway through the third quarter, Girard reached 1,000 career points, prompting coach James Cuyler called a time out, and the North Warren fans cheered for the three-year varsity player. A presentation of a commemorative basketball occurred shortly after the game.

as an outside shooter; but this year, he’s often been charging inside to score, Cuyler said.

“Girard has been in ‘attack mode’ recently — he’s driving to the rim, mingling with the big guys down low,” he said.

The OESJ team kept fairly close to the Cougars in the first quarter, but North Warren — ranked the seventh place Class D team in the state — made some adjustments.

“We hadn’t been playing for two weeks so we started slow, but our guys picked it up and got into the game,” Cuyler said.

The Cougars’ mid-game rally may have been sparked by Cuyler’s advice to Nate Hopper, Ryan Miller and James Steen soon after St. Johnsville started out with a defense that focused on Girard and his teammate, beefy center Tanner Dunkley.

“I told those three guys that St. Johnsville’s ‘junk’ defense was disrespect and they ought to take it personally — I said, ‘The three of you are

as good as Girard and Dunkley,’” Cuyler said.

“Then Nate came out firing and he hit his shots.”

Cuyler added that Hopper is a hot shooter, Steen is fast and elusive on the court, and Ryan Miller makes key points when they’re needed.

“James is a slasher — he’s athletic, he gets to the rim is explosive and jumps high; and Ryan knocks down big shots — he stepped up in the third quarter, hitting two big 3-pointers that sealed the game for us,” Cuyler said, noting that Steen and Miller are seniors who provide leadership.

Dunkley, who excelled in the St. Johnsville game, is known as a bruiser — he’s 6’4” tall and 280-plus pounds, and other players bounce off him a lot.

“We tell Tanner that he controls the paint and opponents can’t come down there,” Cuyler said. “He protects the inside — he makes sure every shot is contested; he boxes out and rebounds — he’s a beast, a workhorse.”

Cuyler added that junior guard Jack Jennings played tough.

“Jennings is one of our best defenders,” he said. “He played tough tonight — he gives a lot of effort.”

Coach Cuyler said that senior guard Wyatt Gereau is quite effective, particularly on defense, “giving 100 percent” every single game.

The Cougars’ total-team effort put them up 37-23 by halftime, and increased their lead for the remainder of the game.

Following Girard’s team-leading offiensive performance was Dunkley with 15 points and 22 rebounds, and Hopper with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Miller added 11 points and executed 2 assists, Steen had 7 points and 2 assists, Jennings sank two field goals; and Wyatt Gereau hit one along with his effective defense.

Next up for the Cougars was a semifinal game March 4 against Germantown in the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls. Coach Cuyler expressed optimism about the game.

“We’re trying to make history — and we’re in a great situation as we work toward this goal.” ■

ADIRONDACK PARK | Zebra mussel larvae have been discovered in the state’s largest fish hatchery, and this contamination by a pernicious invasive species will be reducing or eliminating the stocking of trout in various waterways around the state — including lakes, ponds and streams in the Adirondacks.

The Department of Environmental Conservation announced on Feb. 25 that the zebra mussels were discovered in January to be present in Delta Lake, which supplies water to the agency’s Rome Fish Hatchery.

A subsequent investigation uncovered that the zebra mussel larvae were present in the hatchery ponds using water from Delta Lake, but not some of the hatchery’s other ponds and raceways fed by underground springs.

The Rome hatchery annual produces nearly 160,000 pounds of brook, rainbow and brown trout — more than 2.3 million trout in total — that are stocked in about 300-plus lakes and ponds and 2,900 miles of streams in the state, according to DEC publications.

A large number of the fish from the Rome hatchery are those used in stocking of remote waters by airplane and helicopter, and many

of those waterways are in the Adirondacks.

The disruption in statewide fish stocking is envisioned to continue next year as well.

DEC sources have said the entire Rome fish hatchery will have to be decontaminated, redesigned and reconstructed, according to the Syracuse Post-Standard.

“We are taking this aquatic invasive discovery very seriously,” state Department of Environmental Commissioner Basil Seggos said in a prepared statement. “The DEC will provide all the necessary resources to address this problem and employ solutions to ensure the hatchery will operate free of zebra mussels in the future.”

The statement said that the DEC is investigating options to maximize hatchery production so as many waters as possible can be stocked.

Trout Unlimited board member Bill Wellman of Plattsburgh said he was concerned about the situation, and how the stocking of upstate waterways would be effected.

“Can the DEC really devise a system that provides pure water to the hatchery?,” he said, noting he was concerned about how long it would actually take the state to reconstruct the Rome hatchery and get it operating again. “Every time the state takes on a project, it takes twice as long and costs at least four times as much as they have planned.” ■

Since the early- to mid-1900s, townspeople in Thurman have held this event, celebrating the end of winter by sharing a meal together.

In recent decades, the event has featured food served pot-luck style at long tables in the Thurman town Hall in Athol, with residents and visitors listening to home-grown mountain music as they dine. Annually, people flock from many miles away to attend this event which celebrates rural culture.

The community party’s draw is not only the socializing, but the dessert traditionally served — “Jackwax,” or local maple syrup ladled on shaved ice.

This buffet community dinner, set this year for March 14 from 3 p.m. until all are served, annually raises money for the American Cancer Society. Performing at the event are the Warren County Ramblers, featuring Hoddy Ovitt on guitar.

The beloved event wasn’t held last year because of an issue related to the town hall’s certification to hold public events, but that obstacle has been addressed.

The event’s organizers are calling it the 60th annual Maple Sugar party, although some historians have estimated that the tradition goes back to the early 1900s, or even the late 1800s.

Days, an annual series of three weekends in March which showcases age-old local traditions.

Maple Days offers self-guided tours to eight sites in Thurman, including four maple farms: Hidden Hollow Maple Farm; Mud Street Maple; Toad Hill Maple Farm, which hosts wagon rides; and Valley Road Maple, which will be offering pancakes breakfasts 9 a.m. to 1 p.m each Saturday and Sunday over all the Maple Days weekends.

All four sites showcase their evaporators, which boil down maple sap into syrup, which is offered for sale. Several of the farms also offer confections made from the maple syrup as well.

Three other sites will also be hosting visitors — Peru Llama Farm which will be showcasing their creatures; Blackberry Hill Farm with their organic bread, cheese, poultry and other meats; and Martin’s Lumber where Wini Martin will be presenting an artisan market offering a wide range of wares, as well as artisans demonstrating their crafts. This site also features Gary Martin demonstrating his mill equipment, talking about local life in bygone years, and informing people about his sustainable forestry practices.

Also, Nettle Meadow Farm will introduce visitors to their many rescued animals which reside in their animal sanctuary, while offering a variety of their internationally renowned, award-winning cheeses.

Facing our coronavirus fears As a boy, I remember my maternal grandmother talking about the great Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-20. Today’s coronavirus panic is evocative of the 20th century’s greatest viral outbreak.

Born in 1889, my grandmother died in 1989 at the age of 100. But back in 1918, at the end of World War I, she was 29 years old, married, and the mother of two young children.

My mother was a one-year-old toddler in 1918. And my mom’s other sibling at that time, her brother Johnnie, was a growing, intelligent lad of six.

Johnnie was described, by all family accounts, as a bright and sensitive boy who showed academic and athletic promise.

The future must have looked very bright for little Johnnie. Yet in 1920, at the age of eight, Johnnie became one of the millions of worldwide victims of the Spanish flu.

I learned that Johnnie’s death was a great shock to my grandparents, although my mother was too young to remember much of her brother’s young life. One of my mom’s earliest memories, at the age of three, is her parent’s home draped in black crepe with the neighbors, also dressed in black, dropping by to pay their respects.

Thankfully, my mother survived the great 1918-20 pandemic. And while she came down with scarlet fever a short time later, she survived that illness, too, and went on to enjoy the life of a centenarian (now, plus three).

The coronavirus and its effects on the earth’s population and the many daily decisions we and others make have all come under intense scrutiny.

In this worldwide pandemic scare are many lessons to be learned about how we conduct our lives, the investments we make, and even simple hygienic choices we make throughout the day.

Lesson one is not to overreact or panic: We should take comfort in knowing that in this country our medical expertise, and already in place safeguards, should improve our chances of limiting the overall impact on the nation.

Lesson two is that contagions, politics, and finances create the worst possible public reaction.: Election year or not, this is no time for either side to “weaponize” a virus for either political or financial gain.

Just like it’s not ok to charge 500% more for an antiviral mask than it was before this virus began to spread, it also not ok to use this virus as an opportunity to score political points. This is a time to unite and work together. Not just in this country but worldwide as we share research and knowledge to defend against major outbreaks that sooner or later could reach our loved ones.

Lesson three shows us the risks of outsourcing important raw materials and certain critical production facilities outside the continent: We are just beginning to learn that we may face many shortages in pharmaceutical components and other imported products due to short-sided corporate profiteers. We’ve become far too dependent on China, and from this experience, we should recognize the need to rebalance our manufacturing supply chain practices.

Lesson four is basic personal hygiene: We should have known from a young age, and this is that mother was always right about washing our hands and touching our face. Influenza is far more deadly here in the U.S. than COVID-19 yet the best weapon we have for avoiding the spread of it is to wash our hands regularly and avoids rubbing our eyes and touching our faces.

All deadly threats are best handled with common sense, a clear-headed approach and transparency. These reactions should come as no surprise to anyone, yet it’s the simple things we’ve learned in the past that are the last things we seem to think about whenever we are faced with something new.

Our human frailties cause us to react too slowly when something new surprises us, and we refuse to acknowledge that we need help.

Let’s all do our part to ensure this virus doesn’t get a foothold here by following the advice of our national experts and don’t forget to wash those hands frequently. ■

Today’s version of a pandemic nightmare is the 2020 coronavirus outbreak.

Yet when compared to 1918-20, the current outbreak appears rather small: so far, 2,942 deaths are from the cornoavirus, compared to 50 million-plus deaths caused by the Spanish flu. We say this not to diminish the lives of coronavirus victims but to provide perspective and help calm present fears.

Why bother? Well, human fear is a powerful force to unleash, especially when it occurs needlessly en masse.

At the moment, N-class (and other) surgical face masks are flying off the shelves nationwide. This run-on face masks says a lot about these basic human fears.

For example, here in Addison County, Vermont, local drug store staffers are reporting empty shelves; that is, every surgical-style face mask package, regardless of its true effectiveness against a virus, has been sold out within the past few weeks. Ditto, druggists we canvassed via telephone across the lake in New York.

On Feb. 29, the U.S. Surgeon General addressed the face mask problem. He Tweeted a stern warning to American citizens about scarfing up the masks: “Seriously people-STOP BUYING MASKS! They are NOT effective in preventing (the) general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!”

While the current virus outbreak is nothing to sneeze at (if you’ll pardon the pun), the best way to fight our collective pandemic fears is armed with accurate information and remaining calm. Especially, don’t be tricked by those individuals or groups making a bad situation even worse by exploiting our fears for some hidden agenda.

Financial and business blogger Josh Steimle has penned some wise lay observations about “fear” which deserve repeating here, especially in light of the sometimes hyperbolic news about coronavirus.

“Fear exists to keep us safe,” Steimle wrote. “It is not inherently bad or good but a tool we can use to make better decisions... When fear strikes consider whether the correct action might be to analyze the options and make a wise, well thought out choice, rather than jumping to what seems right in the heat of the moment... Embrace fear as instruction and let it inform your actions, but not control them.”

Yes, by all means be cautious when it comes to the coronavirus, but first listen to our health experts (and your family physician) before running out to buy the last surgical face mask in town.

And just as the British government publicly posted in the darkest days of the London Blitz, “Stay calm and carry on.”

To the Editor: I too remember listening to Radio Free Europe during the Second World War mentioned by Mr. Alexander “The Russians are coming again?” So now the Russians have the ability to talk back.

America will never be destroyed from the outside. “If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” This quote is attributed to Abraham Lincoln. The truth of this quote has been illustrated by the Russian story of the last 3 years. Forget Russia. It is time to look at Washington to reveal the enemy from within. What troubles me is Americans refuse to acknowledge the truth of the exposure that the true interference was from within, aka the DNC, not the Russians.

This ignorance can be contributed directly to our education system. Another indication of this great system is I have to print my letters to my 14 year old great-grand daughter be-

cause she cannot read cursive writing.

In 1962 prayer was removed from our school system and now if we want to reference God or use His Word in a letter to the editor, it may not be approved. Next In 1973 abortion was decriminalized. Now the teaching of God has essentially been removed from our society.

If Christians remembered they might know you are to love your neighbor as yourself. All we hear today is hatred especially for President Trump.

Don’t be surprised if Trump is not reelected. The Bible also tells us of a one world government. Socialism may start that trip in 2021. We all need to pause and rethink what is really important to us and where do we want to spend eternity. This physical life is only temporary.

historian Mabel Tucker, herself a devoted church goer, a class of Wesleyan Methodists was held at Darrowsville who were called “The Warrensburgh Class.” Services were held intermittently until about 1930-40. Transportation was difficult and interest waned and finally the work was discontinued entirely.

In the days before TV, telephones, newspapers and automobiles came along, churches were the staple the allowed isolated people living far from each other, to communicate with their fellow humans and to praise the Lord.

Recently I was reading in Country Magazine an interesting article about an old one room church, groaning with age and fighting a losing fight against the elements, in Floyd County, Georgia. Local people there were struggling to save this humble 1889 structure before it crumbled to dust. I was struck with just how much it resembled our own grand old local church, what is left of it, in Darrowsville, half way between Warrensburg and the outskirts of Chestertown.

This church, built in 1843, was first the Methodist Episcopal Church, which didn’t survive and latter became the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Volumes have been written about founder and radical abolitionist John Wesley, born in 1703, who broke away from the Episcopal Church and set the religious world on fire.

STEPPING INTO THE PAST

To visit Darrowsville has always been a way to step back into another world, a world long gone in these rapid fire days.

When one steps out of their automobile there is not another human being to be seen but a vast hoard of people, buried and turned to dust there in the cemetery can be felt to still be gathered all around.

The silence is deafening but there is the intense feeling that you are definitely not alone. The souls of those who gathered in their beloved church and struggled to fight the abomination of slavery are there waiting

the broken windows. I was captivated to see the old church organ, the varnish weathered away with time and weather, standing in its time honored place against the sagging wall.

The church bell was in the tower.

In an old February 5, 1903 Warrensburgh News I read …”The proceeds of the oyster supper to be given next week at the hall at Darrowsville will be applied to the debt on the church organ. It is hoped that there will be a large attendance and that the profits will be sufficient to cancel the entire debt.”

In 1976, the year of the country’s bicentennial, elders of the Wesleyan church offered to give the town the antique bell, built for the church in the 1800’s and still in the church’s tower, as well as the deed to the church. The town was planning to demolish the church at that time. A citizens group was quickly formed to oppose this plan and intended to “spruce up” the church themselves.

The last time, years later, I was in Darrowsville the organ, the bell and the building were gone and the roof was lying intact on the ground. I have asked many times, but I have never been able to find out what happened. Every sad story should indeed have an ending, but there are many mysteries in life and this is one of them. As the poet once said, “The past is a bucket of ashes.” ■

FIRST TO ARRIVE

The first to arrive was Myron Tripp. He organized the church and formed a link to the Underground Railway that aided runaway slaves to make their way to Canada.

The second minister to arrive was Thomas Baker, a zealot who is thought to have hidden and fed fugitive slaves, away from the prying eyes of the law, in the parsonage than located next to the church and to give them comfort, assuring them that the Lord was protecting them in their long painful journey.

Thomas and his wife, Eunice E. Baker, 54, who died Nov. 3,1863 are buried in the cemetery there. She must have lived a hard but rewarding life. Thomas was 77 years old when he died March 10, 1891. I believe that the congregation must surely have sang, “Onward Christian Soldiers,” at his funeral as his soul traveled forward to Heaven to finally greet his hero, John Wesley.

THE PAST FADES AWAY

I will always remember the time, many years ago, that I walked into what was left of that long neglected building. The boards creaked beneath my feet as the structure was no longer sound. The wind blew through

What Kind of America Do We Want? A Nation of Opportunity for All; or a Nation Devoid of any Hope?

low income struggling residents who now, instead of hopeless despair, generally have an OPTIMISTIC outlook for the future with unlimited opportunities for them to achieve the American dream; and become wealth and job creators themselves?

I’m reminded of a scene in the movie “Dr. Zhivago,” where Yuri returns to his pre-Bolshevik fiancé’s elegant Tsarist-era home only to find it trashed and several Bolsheviks living there. The area administrator assigns him and his fiancé’s family a living area. Yuri sarcastically tells the official, “Yes, comrade, this is a much better arrangement than before!”.

Yes, comrades, America will be a much better place if the uneducated, easily manipulated dependent poor take over; than before, when the capitalists created wealth and jobs. Welcome to a future America, where we hypocritically profess compassion for our poor but take away any hope of, or opportunity for, them to achieve the American dream because the wealth and job creators who make it possible all left!

One last point. The next time someone criticizes wealth, ask them if social justice activists, uneducated, easily manipulated, and dependent poor sign your paychecks! ■

After the Soviet Union collapsed, there are still many poor people in Russia, but now there are a lot of billionaire wealth and job creators and, more importantly, opportunities for the poor to they themselves become wealth and job creators.

Contrast this with life in a Capitalist country like the US then ask yourself: Do we want a weak US, where only bureaucrats have any significant wealth, while the low-income demographic striving to achieve the American Dream have no hope whatsoever to achieve that dream because the wealth and job creators that make it all possible left after tax-the-hellout-of-the-rich “social justice” policies forced them to leave? Remember “Atlas Shrugged”?

Or, do we want a wealthy US, still with a significant, but declining, demographic of

For the upcoming November presidential election, many politicians and their “free everything” minions want to paint Capitalism as evil, serving only the wealthy, and Communism/ Socialism “social justice” policies as good for all. This simplistic characterization makes it very easy to buffalo an uneducated populace that knows very little about either economic system other than cute bumper sticker clichés such as “Capitalism bad; Socialism good.”

Let’s forget the clichés and see what each system provides its citizens.
