The coronavirus tightens its grip on the North Country Local schools closed until at least April 19

WARREN COUNTY | A five-word phrase echoed this week throughout the North Country, immediately and dramatically changing the lives of all area residents.

“In an abundance of caution,” the announcements were declared again and again — in announcing the closure, postponement or cancellation of so many aspects of public life, due to the effort to curb the novel coronaviris known as COVID-19.

The first of the many announcements occurred on March 12, prohibiting public attendance at sports tournaments, cancellation of concerts and mass gatherings. This was followed soon

“How child-care can be provided under these circumstances is a huge question,” he said. “We want to take precautions, but our town governments are also the entities that help those in need and ensure the well-being of our citizens.”

Meanwhile, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an order banning public gatherings of over 500 people. The prohibition also mandated that events hosting fewer than 500 attendees would have to reduce their capacity by 50 percent. This dictate triggered a cascade of event cancellations.

Simultaneously, colleges across New York State canceled on-site classes, causing thousands of students to empty their dorm rooms and head back to their hometowns. Many of those colleges said that students were to take their courses online.

County continues to release residents from quarantine

Also, physicians, medical officials and health care representatives urged people to practice “social distancing” which meant staying home if at all possible, in order to protect their health. These instructions prompted people to isolate themselves and their families at home, limiting contact with others as much as they could.

This widespread self-isolation prompted thousands of people to cram area grocery markets and “big box” stores — and they filled their shopping carts with supplies they felt they needed in order to survive staying at home for weeks.

Frustrated shoppers visited dozens of stores without finding vital supplies. Shannon Fonda of Johnsburg was among those seeking toilet paper and other essentials, with no success.

“We’ll just go into ‘camping mode,” she said after her lengthy search.

This nationwide phenomenon of panic shopping prompted President Trump to advise the public Sunday not to hoard such goods. “You don’t have to buy so much — take it easy, just relax,” he said. “Were doing great, it all will pass.”

Fonda offered a similar thought.

“People just need to hunker down and do what they do in the North Country when the power goes out for a week or two,” she said. “People are getting knocked out of their comfort zone — but no one needs to freak out — in a while this will be over, and they will survive.” ■

WARREN COUNTY | Not a single Warren County resident has a confirmed case of the COVID19 virus as of March 15, county Administrator Ryan Moore announced at 7:40 p.m. Sunday.

The county, however, had 27 of its citizens quarantined on that date — 21 of them mandatory and six precautionary.

Mandatory quarantines are conducted when a person has been within six feet of someone who has had contact with a person who has tested positive for the COVID-19

virus, or has been within six feet of a person confirmed to host the illness.

The precautionary quarantines are declared when an individual’s travel may have placed them at risk.

These latter six individuals in quarantine have no symptoms, he said. Eight of those under mandatory quarantines are healthy and were due to have their quarantine orders lifted as of March 16, Moore said. The county has been continuing its practice of regularly checking in with all people that are quarantined, he added.

Moore has noted that a number of people — who consulted about two weeks ago with a pharmacist who had been working at the

Fort Ti shows off female-related artifacts

TICONDEROGA | Early in the 20th century, there were no National Historic Sites, no Colonial Williamsburg and few institutions dedicated to preservation. So when George Upshur, a descendant of Martha Washington, was looking for places to bequeath snippets of his famous ancestor’s gowns, Fort Ticonderoga was among the places he chose.

There, in 1909, Stephen and Sarah Pell were helping preserve the ruined fort and assembling a collection of artifacts to such an extent that curators are still busy cataloging it all.

So, said Margaret Staudter, Fort Ticonderoga registrar and site archaeologist, this explains why a cache of Martha memorabilia wound up so far from her Virginia home at an outpost she has no other association with.

On International Women’s Day in early March, Staudter showed a fort audience Martha’s lace and fragments of her gowns, including the one that she wore when she

married George. It was common in past eras to not save an entire dress, but instead cut it into bits to be shared by many.

Naturally, this can lead to dubious claims.

Traveling overseas, Mark Twain once remarked that he had seen enough fragments of the True Cross to build a good sized schooner out of, with enough wood left over to crucify the crew. But Staudter said that bits of lace at Fort Ticonderoga are consistent with lace at Martha’s Mount Vernon plantation, lending credence to its authenticity.

The fort has other artifacts from women who either stayed at the fort or passed through. In 1775, when it was occupied by the British, a third of the people at the fort were women and children. But Staudter said only one female-related artifact has been unearthed at the site of the fort — a pair of pattens, wooden chocks banded with iron that attached to soles of a woman’s shoes to raise them out of the mud. (All that was left when they were discovered was the iron).

These somewhat rickety platforms might have kept shoes and dress hems cleaner, but at the cost of the woman’s equilibrium, Staudter said.

to be sober enough to manipulate the ring on his pocket watch onto the peg.

But if she failed at taming the ruffian, she succeeded on botany, becoming one of Vermont’s earliest catalogers of plants. Her herbarium, established in 1814, is believed to be the oldest in the state. And in the fort’s collection are her magnifying loupes and a demure pair of scissors she used to snip specimens.

The supervisor said that Mountain Lake Services, which owns the building and uses it for office space, is planning to dress up the facade, whose portico was shaved off to make room for the old supermarket. “This is a win for the community,” Scozzafava said. Had it not been purchased and demolished by Stewart’s, “that (supermarket) building would have sat empty for a long time.”

The shop itself will be 4,100 square feet, almost double the size of the typical Stewart’s Shop built in the 1990s, a time when Stewart’s, headquartered in Ballston Spa, began expanding throughout the Adirondacks. And it’s bigger than most of the new stores being built today, which are generally about 3,700 square feet.

“Stewart’s has been excellent in this process,” Scozzafava said. “They have always been a good neighbor and they continue to be.” ■

PORT HENRY | What will become the largest Stewart’s Shop in the corporate system is getting ready to break ground in Port Henry next month and is expected to be finished by June, a company executive told Moriah Town Board members last week.

Jennifer Howard, property manager and permit specialist for Stewart’s, said the store will be unique in that it will feature brick and ornamentation in order to complement Port Henry’s distinctive Second Empire architecture.

The new store will be tucked in the corner of Main and St. Patrick’s streets to give passersby a better view of the Witherbee Mansion, which had been hidden for more than 60 years behind a featureless supermarket. That market, which closed last fall, was demolished when Stewart’s purchased the property.

“As much as possible, we did our best to keep what’s going on (architecturally) in the village,” Howard said. The remade property will include “a lot of blacktop,” she said, to accommodate the big RVs and trailered boats that populate the Adirondack Coast in the summertime.

To serve that market, the store will have a fast-flow diesel fuel pump designed to fill big tanks quickly, and it will also include a walk-up ice cream window.

Howard said that the company is still planning on a more grocery-like product line, although nothing has been finalized.

When the supermarket closed, local officials feared Port Henry would become another “food desert,” that would steer the public toward less nutritional food choices. Howard said the company is keeping that in mind as it plans its inventory because “It’s the everyday people who make the best customers.”

The expanded parking space also creates a better view of the Witherbee mansion, which had drawn admiring comments since its coming out party earlier this year. “It’s the

Taking a Top Down Approach to Home Exterior Updates (BPT) - Year after year, the most popular home improvement project for American families remains the same: remodeling the kitchen. Today, kitchen makeovers are more ambitious than ever, with homeowners willing to spend larger budgets to upgrade both the aesthetics and the functionality of what is, after all, the most used room in the house.

“Many architects, designers and homeowners are specifying hardwood as an essential part of any kitchen refresh,” notes Linda Jovanovich, of the American Hardwood Information Center. “That’s because wood not only offers a wide variety of looks and design possibilities, it also exemplifies the kind of material today’s environmentally conscious consumer wants: One that’s renewable, sustainable, plentiful, durable and easy to work with - all of which makes it an excellent return on investment.”

Replacing tired old kitchen cabinets with stylish new ones is a favorite starting point, but there are several strategies to help maximize their impact. “I like to specify one type of wood for an entire kitchen - cabinetry, furniture, millwork and flooring - but use different stains and finishes on each element,” says New York designer Laura Bohn. “That creates visual interest without losing a sense of overall unity.” In one all-walnut kitchen project, for instance, Bohn painted the Shaker-style cabinets a putty tone for a serene background. But she stained the wide-plank floor a darker shade than the granite-top island so that the latter stands out like a beautiful piece of furniture.

In a similar vein, a recently completed 1920’s Bungalow house renovation had quarter-sawn white oak used throughout for floors, interior doors and kitchen cabinets.

While the floorboards were lightly whitewashed and given a protective coating to create the look of bare wood, the base cabinets, supplied by Plain & Fancy Custom Cabinetry, received a slightly darker cerused finish just different enough to distinguish them from the rest of the woodwork. The oak wall cabinets were painted white to match the kitchen’s shiplap ceiling. “It’s peaceful rather than exciting,” said the homeowner. “And that’s exactly what we wanted.”

If you’re after a livelier effect, you might consider another emerging trend: mixing up wood species and cabinet-door styles.

THURMAN MAPLE DAYS CURTAILED

lama’s unexpected advance at the Peru Llama Farm during a prior year’s Thurman Maple Days event. The Peru Lama farm and two other venues are to be open this weekend, and visitors are welcome, despite the official cancellation of Maple Days.

Another one of northern Warren County’s premier events, Thurman Maple Days, has been affected by the “social distancing” now urged by both health care experts and governmental officials. Thurman Maple Days was officially canceled for its remaining March weekends, according to its sponsoring organization, Thurman Station Association — although some of the maple farms and destinations in the town of Thurman have pledged to stay open.

Association official Perky Granger detailed the decision in a March 5 email citing that “cancellation was the only responsible course of action at this time.”

According to the Thurman Station Association website postings, the following farms and other Maple Days venues will be conducting tours and talks: Mud St. Maple, Valley Road Maple, and Peru Llama Farm.

Those farms to be open for product sales only are: Blackberry Hill Farm, Toad Hill Maple, Hidden Hollow Maple, and Nettle Meadow Farm. Martin’s Lumber will not be open.

ELIZABETHTOWN |New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and governors of Connecticut and New Jersey have closed in-house seating for all bars, movie theaters, casinos, gyms and restaurants in the three neighboring states effective at 8 p.m. Monday, March 16.

Restaurants and bars will be able to provide take-out or delivery food service in order to keep part of their operations running.

Supermarkets and pharmacies will remain open.

The stark and broad-range announcement was part of several regional steps Cuomo announce during his daily coronavirus update on Monday.

The order continues until further notice.

Cuomo, along with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Ned La mont coord inated a regional approach as a stopgap measure, hoping it prevents residents from state-shopping.

“New York is partnering with our neighboring states to implement a unif o r m standa rd

that n o t only keeps o u r people safe but also prevents ‘state shopping’ where residents of one state travel to another and v ice versa. I have called on the federal government to implement nationwide protocols, but in their absence, we are taking this on ourselves,” Cuomo said from Albany.

Beyond restaurant, bar, gym, movie theatre and casino closure, the governors also set group gathering limits down to 50 people in accordance with guidance issued on Sunday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Viruses don’t know borders,” Gov. Lamont said of the Tri-State decision.

“CT, NY & NJ are taking a regional approach to reduce spread of COVID-19,” Lamont said via Twitter.

Cuomo has requested that all police and law enforcement officers, local and state, and emergency medical service personnel be provided with masks and proper safety gear for every call.

Schools throughout the North Country were closed with announcements on Sunday, but the governor said the 14 percent of schools that remained open elsewhere in the state would also close.

State health officials and Cuomo’s COVID-19 team have asked New Yorkers to stay at home as much as possible, urging people to keep a safe distance of about 6 feet from others while in public.

Cuomo asked local government agencies to reduce their workforce by 50 percent.

Chester announces changes to facilities, programs Latest response to coronavirus scare

ELIZABETHTOWN | Essex County Public Health announced closure of programs and activities run for elders through the Office for the Aging.

All senior meal sites, including lunch and dinnertime gatherings, are canceled, effective Monday, March 16.

Senior meal sites will remain closed until further notice.

This includes mealtime gatherings held every day, at various times, in AuSable Forks, Minerva, Crown Point, Moriah, Elizabethtown, Bloomingdale, Newcomb, Essex/Willsboro, Schroon Lake, Keeseville, Lake Placid, Ticonderoga and Wilmington.

“We are working to protect our vulnerable people from any potential exposure to illness,” Andrea Whitmarsh, public information officer at the public health office, told the Sun.

These extra precautions are being taken to protect Essex County’s elder population from coronavirus flu, called COVID-19, which has been declared pandemic worldwide.

Essex County Supervisors last week enacted an emergency declaration to ease purchasing regulation for goods and services.

No cases of COVID-19 have been found in Essex County as of March 13. But confirmed cases and several other people are in quarantine in Saratoga and Albany counties.

Caregiver education classes and caregiver support groups are also canceled, according to Public Health.

Exercise classes along with other social offerings from the Office for the Aging are also canceled until further notice.

WARREN COUNTY | Town leaders of Chester met in an emergency meeting March 15; they made some decisions regarding their programs and facilities in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The town board decided to: • Close the town library to the public until further notice, but have its staff continue to work in the venue; • Restrict access to the Chester Municipal Center through one entrance, and have visitors sign in to gain entry; • Close the reuse center at the town transfer station until further notice, although the station itself will remain open with its regular hours for other functions;

• Temporarily suspend non-essential activities in the Municipal Center and halt use of the gym until further notice; • Temporarily discontinue congregate meals at the town Meal Site in the Municipal Center, yet continue home delivery of meals but with a modified schedule — these decisions were made in collaboration with the Warren County Office for the Aging; • Continue to encourage citizens’ visits to the town Food Pantry; • Send home employees that are ill or have symptoms of an illness; • Publicize the YMCA’s closure of the Chester Wellness Center through March 22, at which time the YMCA’s administrators will likely resume the center’s operations; and • Create a Facebook page where updates concerning town programs and facilities will be publicized, as well as for posting notices of upcoming community events and activities. ■

United in uncertain times

Toilet paper shortages?? Nonsense!

To the Editor: Toilet paper shortages and more hand washing in the current coronavirus scare give us a very positive opportunity. Using water instead of toilet paper after bowel movements, is a more hygienic means of cleaning oneself.

And of course thorough hand washing afterward is the obvious thing to do.

I learned these things as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Iran and never looked back upon returning home.

Sure, lots of “ughs” and “ickies” when I tell people, but who cares. It is a better way; and no better time than now to feel it out and make the switch from toilet paper to water.

Giving this a try requires minimal change. All that is required is placement of an empty half gallon plastic juice or milk jug in the bathroom near the toilet filled with water.

For further refinement there are specially made toilets that incorporate their own water dispensing methods, or “bidets” in other countries. I will always remember being at an international trade fair in Washington State roaming around with my wife and small children. They had spotted one of these toilets and came running back to me yelling, “Dad, dad, come with us, we’ve found the toilet for you!”

No one has a crystal ball, given these rapidly changing conditions.

Obviously, the health of our population is of utmost importance as we venture into these uncharted waters.

As of this moment, we know of no cases of COVID-19 infections in Essex County or Clinton County, New York, where we have offices, but we are trying to be proactive and think of these steps as an ounce of prevention.

As of Sunday night, in consultation with our senior management team at The Sun and the Vermont Eagle, we’ve decided to move as many employees as possible to work from home. At the same time, we’ve decided to close our offices to the public to slow down unnecessary interaction in the hopes of preventing any infections.

We ask our customers to call our office or use email if you need to communicate with us. If you must visit the office, please call the main switchboard at 518-873-6368 if you need a face-to-face meeting so that we can be sure the person you need to see is even available.

With schools and other businesses in the area closed, our immediate thoughts are the communication needs of our readers and the economic health of our local businesses. At this point, we intend to keep the presses running and the website well populated.

The events calendar has seen nearly every event, meeting, and scheduled program canceled.

Since we won’t be covering many public or sporting events, we’ll focus on critical information to help you understand what’s taking place regionally. Articles on health care systems and the availability of important services like food or pharmacy deliveries, transportation, heating fuel, and other basic needs assuming many of you may choose to self-isolate.

The actions we all take in the next few weeks are for the good of our neighbors, friends, and family who may be at great risk should this virus infect them. The greatest fear today is that we must slow down the rate of infection so as not to overburden what our health care systems can handle.

Day by day, working together as we learn more about how we can defend against the virus, the stronger we become not just with COVID-19 but with all infectious illnesses.

Godspeed and keep safe in the days ahead. ■

To the Editor: I have a few disagreements with the guest column “What kind of America do we want” by David Safrany. #1, He starts by trying to scare his readers away from the evils of socialism by describing some of the worst traits of both Cuba and Russia.

I find it hard to believe that even the most left leaning liberal is interested in modeling the USA after that kind socialism. #2, Mr. Safrany goes on to say that if we criticize the wealthy, paycheck signing, job creators, they will leave, taking their opportunities for the rest of us with them. In the 30 or so years directly after WW2, the rich and corporations paid far more in taxes than today. The average CEO made about 30 times the money as the guy on the floor. However, in the last 50 years we’ve seen one tax cut after another that have favored the rich, and left everybody else waiting for that promised “trickle down.” In

Some signatures are from voters who rent and their rent is raised when you increase the water and sewer taxes. We made it very clear for you stop the increases effective now until you can find alternative income streams and/ or cut spending costs. I am distressed by a few things you noted.

• The Street Road Project cost 14 million dollars. Schroon Lake has a building half the size of ours. Is it because you over built it and mismanaged our tax dollars?

• You noted the Portage project was going to cost 8 million dollars.

To the Editor: A label is a simple word used to convey something more complex.

Unfortunately this oversimplification often obscures underlying facts.

Labels can devolve into name-calling where one single word has the power to instill fear and division, devoid of any effort to understand. One divisive label is the word “socialist”.

It is understandable why the label “Socialism” strikes fear in some. In a narrow context it describes a society in which government takes care of its citizens by controlling everything. The unsuccessful Communist experiment in the Soviet Union had the title, Socialist Republic.

However, in its simplest sense “socialism” means prioritizing people’s needs; believing that when ordinary people do better, the whole country benefits. From the start, the United States has chosen many socialist programs: a national military for our common defense; VA benefits for our soldiers; free public K-12 education; an interstate highway system; and the care of our elderly with Medicare and Social Security. At the same time the United States success also lies in its values of democracy, human rights, personal freedoms and free enterprise.

Our constitution was written for “we the people”. It guides us at the same time: to “secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity” and to “promote the general welfare”.

Because we sometimes choose socialist programs like national highways, education and care for our elderly it does not mean we are forfeiting our democracy or freedom. The beauty of a democracy is that we the people can choose what is important to us.

Can we drop the labels and namecalling and discuss our choices as to what will make America stronger; whether it is to expand healthcare and education or to cut Social Security and Medicare. Can we listen to each other with open hearts and discerning minds?

PREPAREDNESS ASSESSMENT SHOWS STRENGTHS IN ESSEX COUNTY of the county, and has already improved ambulance response with fewer dropped calls.

It is, Jaquish said, designed to address capacity issues and the need for personnel throughout rural Essex County.

Preparedness capability noted other areas of strength. To name a few: Having a local leader for The American Red Cross moved the assessment needle in county mass-shelter readiness and the county’s ability to provide life-sustaining services to communities in need.

Essex County’s HazMat Team earned top marks. It is part of a coordinated seven-county consortium in northern sections of the state. ■

DHSES team uses data to drive state readiness, grant awards

ELIZABETHTOWN |A team from the New York Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) conducted an on site assessment last week of Essex County emergency readiness.

Reviewed every three years, the County Emergency Preparedness Assessment (CEPA) brought together stakeholders from over a dozen public safety sectors, including Public Health, Department of Transportation, Emergency Services, State Police, the Sheriff’s Department, the American Red Cross, county Information Technology staff and the Department of Environmental Conservation.

The training room at the Public Safety Building was nearly full.

And review marked progress with excellence in several areas.

Of critical capabilities, Essex County noted improvement in Cyber Security, Mass Care and Sheltering, Transportation, Mitigation, the county Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team, interoperability, and in Emergency Medical Services Operations, among others.

Law enforcement Response Operations were also found highly effective here, given coordination and redundant radio systems that share a central office in Lewis.

COUNTY EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS ASSESSMENT

Essex County’s Public Safety Building in Lewis. they have faced in recent years, finding coordination and interoperability keys to success.

Challenges here include lower numbers of volunteers for EMS and firefighting services.

According to DHSES, that is an ongoing concern throughout New York.

A priority in Essex County is improving preparedness for an aging population. A Health Emergency Preparedness Coalition (HEPC) in Essex County is a joint project involving personnel from the Public Health Department, area hospitals, home health agencies and nursing homes.

The discussion last week reviewed protocols in place to contact and check on elderly and infirm in any disaster event.

RISKS AND STRENGTHS

RURAL INFRASTRUCTURE CHALLENGES

Areas of risk in Essex County remain focused on weather events, primarily impacts of flood and wind-related natural disaster.

County officials cited numerous incidents

Essex County utilizes the state alert system to activate public safety information to the public.

The emergency readiness assessment process in New York is data driven, the first of its kind in the nation.

Data from every county is coordinated with state resource overlays to help determine where best to provide grant and/or training support, highlighting areas of strength and need.

According to the DHSES leadership team, other states, such as Colorado, have considered using New York’s assessment system as a model.

During its review process, “DHSES captures both quantitative and qualitative information related to local risk and capability levels. That insight is then used to help inform decision making.

“DHSES also employs data visualization techniques to better identify (preparedness) trends and analyze the information against other open-source data,” including statewide and federal numbers.

Rather than giving each county a final “grade,” the data then drives how New York coordinates resources. ■

Antiquated telephone lines in some regions have left people without land-line services for months at a time, he said.

And that problem is made worse by lack of cellular telephone service or broadband internet access.

SCHROON LAKE | On February 29, 2020, NY State Police conducted a traffic stop on I-87 south of Exit 28 in the town of Schroon. The operator of the 2005 Chevy Trailblazer, William E. All, 51, of Corinth, and passenger, Robert K. Allen, 51, of Malta, were found in possession of approximately 7.4 pounds of marijuana. All was driving with a suspended license. Allen was on parole. The two were arrested and charged with one count each of Criminal Possession of Marijuana. Warrensburg high school upgrades praised

The new library/media center includes a modern circular circulation desk, casual seating areas, two “breakout” rooms for study sessions, meetings, or small-group instruction. Plenty of Internet ports exist throughout the media center/library, a venue that Gerrain described as an “amazing” asset for the school.

She said that the media center’s most outstanding attribute was its layout.

“The best thing about it is how it’s conducive to students working collaboratively in groups,” she said. “Also, the sitting areas are like college libraries.”

The new fitness center has four new weight racks, new free weights, plus many treadmills, elliptical trainers, and stationary bikes.

Goralski said that physical education classes will be using the center in addition to sports teams. Gerrain said the venue was impressive.

“The new equipment will promote health by providing an opportunity for students to exercise,” she said.

Other new upgrades to the high school include barrier-free amenities in restrooms, new partition walls in the gymnasium, renewed bleachers, and fresh paint on the walls. Goralski said that the gym floor is to be refinished over April break.

This summer, the final phase of the $11 million capital project, focusing on the elementary school, is to be tackled. Renovations are to include reconstructing bathrooms and classrooms as well as creating secure entrance “vestibules” in both the elementary and high schools, Goralski said.

“While it’s difficult for rural schools to undertake capital projects like this, due to careful planning by our school board and the support of our communities, we’re able to provide our students with these new facilities,” he said. ■

WARRENSBURG | Area citizens got their first look at the new facilities at Warrensburg High School in an open house held March 7, and people attending the event expressed enthusiasm about the recently completed renovations and reconstruction.

A half-dozen Warrensburg Central School District administrators and faculty members were on hand to show people the new facilities — which include the high school cafeteria, kitchen, theater/auditorium, fitness room and library/media center — and describe their features.

Most prominent in the open house was the new theater/auditorium — the first-ever for the high school. It features plush, tiered seating for 480 people, professional theatrical sound and lighting systems, engineered acoustics, indirect lighting, air conditioning and an extra-wide stage.

A professional sound engineer has told faculty members that the new theater was the “best performance venue between Montreal and Albany,” a district official said this week.

Told of this assessment, District Superintendent John Goralski offered a response.

“Yes, it’s really special — our music and drama department deserves the best, and we’re thrilled that we now have a venue that matches the quality of their work,” he said.

Warrensburgh Museum of Local History director Steve Parisi said Sunday that the theater was “fabulous” and an outstanding community asset.

drama students have a real theater to perform in,” he said.

Local teacher and parent Sue Gerrain said that the auditorium/theater was “absolutely beautiful — gorgeous.” Her daughter has a lead role in the school musical “Newsies” that is to be presented in late March.

“All the kids in the play are super-thrilled to perform in the new theater — and they deserve it,” she said, noting that it will also be used for graduation ceremonies — and audience members will no longer suffer the June heat; and they’ll be able to hear the speeches.

Goralski said that future plans call for constructing an adjoining patio, so students can enjoy the outdoor environment while eating their meals.

The adjacent kitchen has all-new stoves, ovens, dishwasher and auxiliary equipment, Goralski said, adding that all were “state of the art.” The new serving stations, are designed for freshly prepared menu items, he said.

NCCC SUSPENDS CLASSROOM USE

Shift to online starts March 30 through end of semester

TICONDEROGA | North Country Community College suspended classes for an early start to spring break on Monday.

Classroom use on all campuses, Saranac Lake, Ticonderoga and Malone, closed March 16.

When college instruction resumes on March 30, classes will be held online.

The change follows state-level guidance to move all SUNY and CUNY students to distance learning in a concerted effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, the illness caused by novel coronavirus.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced the decision last week, encompassing all New York’s state college and university campuses.

Online classes at NCCC will continue until the end of the school year.

“We understand that this may pose some challenges and hardships for some in our community and, where we can, we are committed to helping each other out,” said NCCC President Joe Keegan said in a statement last week.

“One of the greatest strengths of North Country is the incredible community of students, faculty and staff we have. Our highest priority is the health and safety of our campus community and it is with that in mind that we have taken these steps.”

NCCC spokesman Chris Knight said college administrators, faculty and staff have been monitoring impacts of coronavirus and its spread through communities since late February. As of March 13, no cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Essex or Franklin counties, according to state Department of Health officials.

“A task force has been meeting to develop and implement precautions, plans and protocols for our campus communities,” Knight said.

With NCCC’s protocol,faculty and staff will continue to report to work and plan for distance learning for the

Residence halls will close for spring break, as originally planned, at the end of the day on March 20.

“Staff will help accommodate those students currently residing at the residence halls in need of housing during spring break,” Knight said.

NCCC Residence halls in Saranac Lake will reopen for students on Sunday, March 29, and food service will resume then as well.

Students in residence at the Saranac Lake campus will be allowed to remain in their rooms.

But their classes will be held online.

Knight said NCCC is working to identify and assist faculty and students needing support to make the transition to distance learning.

Other campus access and activities will be curtailed as well: NCCC libraries will be closed to the public, but will remain open to students.

Sparks Athletic Complex in Saranac Lake, including the pool, gym and fitness center, will be closed to the public but will remain open to students.

Student activities will be canceled for the rest of the semester and the Student Massage Clinic will be closed until further notice.

Large gatherings are also being canceled, including the annual Phi Theta Kappa ceremony.

Knight said no decision has been made yet about Commencement, Student Awards and Nursing Pinning Ceremonies.

In fact, Staudter said, it was not unusual for the women who traversed the North Country wilds to have ties to wealth, culture and education, and to have been respected by the men of the North Country. Many were officers’ wives, and accustomed to tough and occasionally daring living conditions.

Lady Harriet Acland was a British noblewoman (she was born with the considerable title of the Honourable Christian Henrietta Caroline Harriet Fox-Strangways) who accompanied her husband, a British major fighting the revolutionaries, to the North Country. She followed his campaigns, Staudter said, and “is very famous for crossing the Hudson while pregnant to visit her husband who had been captured at Saratoga.”

Among the artifacts she left behind was a book of 1807 lectures on the Gospel of St. Matthew, with a hollowed-out section in which was tucked a small replica of a Dutch shoe, which today we might associate with a bracelet charm.

Other artifacts Staudter displayed included women’s coral jewelry, a locket bearing a 250-year-old four-leaf clover and a signet ring used by Alexander Hamilton’s sister-in-law Angelica Schuyler, a “flirtatious, well-read belle of the ball.”

A woman of letters, Schuyler corresponded with Washington, Jefferson Lafayette. She may have been more than friends with Alexander Hamilton, and once wrote her sister to whom the great American Founder was married, “If you were as generous as the old Romans, you would lend him to me for a little while.” ■

Winter playoffs postponed; spring practices halted

“Known safeguards like postponing the competition until another time when communities know more have not been implemented upon request,” said school superintendent Dan Mannix. “This is a major concern as safety comes before competition. This approach concerns and saddens me that we or they may be sending students and spectators into harm’s way. This could result in our

students, families and our most vulnerable in the community being negatively impacted when players, coaches and spectators return home. With this lack of safety oversight, we will not be competing.”

Mannix added he felt Beekmantown had been “the strongest advocates for state action on this issue,” and that the school, “will continue taking precautionary measures to protect our school community and to reduce any potential burden on our local health care systems.” ■

Athletes react to playoffs’ “indefinite postponement”

“Our players were in the gym, shooting around, getting loose before our practice started,” White said, noting he and Lake George Athletic Director Kyle Manny relayed the news to their team.The kids didn’t believe us when we said the upcoming games were off,. They were shook up, upset — particularly the seniors; they had a hard time dealing with it. Tears welled up in their eyes; they were hugging each other, comforting one another. Over the weekend, school districts throughout the state opted to close their doors to students through at least April 19, with the spring sports season barely a week old.

The Section VII season was scheduled to begin with a Plattsburgh High boys lacrosse game Mach 28, while baseball was scheduled to open with Lake Placid at Crown Point March 31; a full set of CVAC softball games April 1; and other sports following spring break on April 20 (golf) and April 21 (track and field).

“These are uncharted waters,” said Section VII executive director Matt Walentuk.

With teams required to hold between six and 10 practices, depending on the sport, before playing a game, it is likely all seasons will have to be pushed back.

STILL HOPEFUL

As of March 16, Watson said the state is still hoping to conclude the winter sports season as well as keeping the spring sports season on track.

“There have been no changes from us on our plans for winter or any preliminary changes on spring sports,” said Watson. “I feel like every day is new information for us and daily we are very much along for the ride on this.”

Moving the spring schedule is also not a new concept in Section VII, where weather often leads to early season postponements and schedule changes.

WINTER SPORTS IMPACTED

The impacted events include the NYSPHSAA boys hockey, bowling, boys and girls basketball regional and state championships.

But on March 12, they heard from their coaches the stunning news that the regional playoffs — and their campaign to compete for a state championship — were “postponed indefinitely” by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association because of concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Just hours earlier, officials of the NYSPHSAA had told school officials that the playoff games would be

White continued his thoughts, talking of how his players had recently developed an athletic synchronicity on court — and had surpassed expectations, surprising some sports fans who hadn’t expected them to go this far in the 2020 post season.

“I feel bad for the kids, they were starting to put things together, feeling good about their game, really becoming a team,” White said. “ When you win games by 25 points, it’s easy to be a team player. But considering the fact that in two of three of our Sectional games, we came back from behind, it shows their teamwork. They never lost faith, they trusted each other, and kept playing for each other, and they won the games — proving they had really come together as a team.”

Cuyler said he and North Warren Athletic Director Lynn Lewis delivered the news of the “indefinite postponement” in the middle of practice on March 12, while his players were preparing for their regional semifinal game. “We laid the bombshell on them — they were upset — it was so overwhelming when they worked so hard all year,” he said.

“A couple of the guys had tears in their eyes; others were hitting the bleachers — they were shocked.”

But Cuyler, a first-year coach at North Warren, said he was holding onto hope that the playoff games would indeed be held in the upcoming weeks.

“Although the state officials had to do what was best for everybody, I still have hope — I’m not quitting on the season,” he said. “Everything is up in the air — things could change any moment — I’m an optimistic person.”

As of last weekend, indications were that Cuyler’s optimism might be well-founded.

NYSPHSAA clarified their position on the “indefinite postponement.” The organization reiterated that their executive director Dr. Robert Dr. Zayas was “cautiously optimistic” that the state championship tournaments for winter sports would indeed be held, and that Zayas would “continue to evaluate” the evolving situation with the coronavirus pandemic.

Although schools have since been closed and scholastic activities have been canceled, some sports fans continue to hold onto hope that the playoff games can be held in empty high school gymnasiums.

Zayas told Glens Falls Post-Star March 13 that there was still a chance that the playoffs could be held.

“Our goal is to have the winter championships. I will continue to evaluate over the coming weeks and make a decision as soon as possible,” he said, noting that the fate of the playoffs would depend on decisions made by the state Department of Health and the Governor’s office. ■

Regional semis shocker: Yellowjackets down top ranked Vikings

POTSDAM | A hot start in the first half and timely buckets in the second led the Madrid Waddington boys varsity basketball team to an upset 68-52 win over Moriah in the Class C regional semifinals Wednesday.

The Yellowjackets came out hot in the first quarter, hitting a pair of three pointers in building a 19-10 lead, which they extended to 28-16 at halftime.

“We just could not stop them,” said Vikings coach Brian Cross. “It was not like Rowan (Swan) was not playing his backside off on defense or anyone else, their kids made shots.

Moriah cut into the lead to start the third quarter, getting within single digits at 37-28 before Madrid Waddington responded with an 11-4 run to end the stanza with a 48-32 lead.

After the Yellowjackets started the fourth on a 6-2 mini-run and getting

the lead up to 54-34, the Vikings responded, going on a 16-3 run that got both fan bases on the edge of their seats and cut the M-W lead to 57-50.

“I give my kids credit — to battle back the way they did and got it below double digits, but what are you going to do — it is what it is, (Madrid) played well and deserved to win.”

The Yellowjackets were able to regroup, going on a 11-0 run to give them a 68-50 lead with just under a minute left to play as the Vikings would score the final basket of the game.

Burghers’ Mike Perrone awarded ‘Coach of the Year’

He continued his education at SUNY Adirondack — where he was twice named MVP in baseball and finished off his undergraduate studies at Castleton State in Vermont, where he ended up serving as an assistant football coach.

Following this tenure, he served as coach for basketball and football at Warrensburg High School and was subsequently hired as a physical education instructor.

WARRENSBURG | Visitors this year to the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta will likely see that Warrensburg-North Warren football coach Mike Perrone has earned a prominent honor from the National Football Foundation for his recent achievements with his team.

To be on display at that venue will be a plaque or certificate — submitted by the foundation’s New York Capital District chapter — recognizing Perrone and four other New York State Section II coaches for their accomplishments in winning 2020 Section II championships.

Perrone received a “Coach of the Year” award from the Foundation alongside Brian Clawson of Shenendehowa High, Matt Crossman of Queensbury, John Bowen of Schuylerville and Ian Godfrey of Stillwater.

Perrone’s team won Class D Section II championships for both the 2019 and 2020 seasons, and the other coaches won the respective 2020 Class AA, A, B and C titles.

The awards were presented at the Capital District Chapter’s 32nd annual ScholarAthlete Awards Banquet held March 2.

Contacted this week, Perrone deferred credit to his team and his assistants.

“I’ve been very fortunate to work with a lot of really, really good athletes and coaches,” he said. “My favorite thing is how we come together each season — it feels like family — and everyone in the school community supports us.”

Warrensburg High School Athletic Director Scott Smith offered his thoughts about Perrone’s award.

“This award is obviously an honor for Mike — not just for this year’s achievement but also for the time and commitment that Mike and the other coaching staff members have put into the football program,” he said. “They’ve done a great job over the last four years.”

Warrensburg Superintendent of Schools John Goralski expressed his thoughts, noting that Perrone, a physical education instructor at Warrensburg Central, coaches basketball and baseball as well as football.

“Mike approaches his coaching as a teaching position — he wants the students to not only learn the game, but to develop sportsmanship,” he said. “Mike teaches life lessons the kids can use their entire lives.”

Goralski said that Perrone had high expectations of his athletes.

Obituaries Judith Ann (Thompson) York Armstrong 1938 - 2020

PLATTSBURGH | Judith Ann (Thompson) York Armstrong of Plattsburgh, New York, passed away peacefully Tuesday night, March 10, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.

Judith was born at home in Port Henry, New York, on May 21, 1938, to Alfred and Bernice (Spaulding) Thompson. Her father was a foreman for Delaware and Hudson, a third-generation railroader, and her mother a homemaker and former one-room schoolhouse teacher’s aide. Judith was predeceased by her parents and was the youngest of their nine children. She said she had the best parents in the world and reminisced about growing up on Elizabeth Street (Kennedy Row) under their loving guidance. Her childhood summers were spent playing with neighborhood children, swimming at the Rosie Hole, playing jump rope, hide-n-seek, riding bicycles bought by her brother Billy, and hopscotch with her sister Jane. Grapevines, plum trees, apple trees, and pear trees, tomatoes and fresh strawberries grew in their idyllic yard, ripe for picking and eating during midday play among the lilacs and irises. Her mother, Bernice, canned everything in their garden and they ate this bounty during the long Champlain Valley winters.

Judith remembered worrying as a very young girl about her big brothers who served during World War II. Her father would read the newspaper closely every day for word of our troops. This instilled in her a lifelong appreciation for newspapers and the work of journalists. Her day was never complete until she had read her Press-Republican and completed the crossword puzzle.

A very bright student, Judith was salutatorian of her eighth-grade class, graduated from Port Henry High School in 1955 and was voted Class Venus. She moved to Plattsburgh that summer and took a job as a telephone operator at the Bell Telephone Company on Oak Street. She happily lived in an apartment on Brinkerhoff Street which she shared with her sisters Jean, a nurse, and Jane, also a telephone operator.

When her first marriage ended, Judith returned to Plattsburgh with her two young daughters in late 1966 and worked as a PBX operator at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital for over 20 years. She made a home on Peru Street in the John Collins Park Plattsburgh Housing Authority. With the eye of an artist she tastefully decorated their apartment on a modest budget, a challenge she enjoyed. One of her signature talents was tricking an empty cupboard into producing a tasty square meal. When she had a day off in the middle of the week she would sometimes make a large batch of chocolate chip cookies, which she would instruct her daughters to share with the neighborhood children.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Carol (Ross) Barnwell; two sons, Michael Barnwell of Nashville, Tennessee, and Scott Barnwell and his wife, Naomi, of Saratoga Springs; four grandchildren, Jody Smith and her husband, Joshua; Cory Barnwell; Joshua Barnwell and his wife, Shlee; and Bethany Grimes and her husband, Matt; and seven great-grandchildren, Zaiden and Annie Grimes; Ezra, Aurora and Asa Barnwell; and Margaret and Henry Smith.

A Memorial Service will take place at a later date at the First United Methodist Church of Ticonderoga.

She married Leo T. Lacey Jr. July 19, 1955.

Together they raised five children.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Leo T. Lacey Jr., three children: Auretta Laribee, Robert (Belinda) Lacey Sr., and Debbie (Shawn) Whitford; a sister, Patricia Daniels; a sister-in-law, June Williams; 12 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by three brothers: Robert, Orrin and Russell Williams. She is also predeceased by two children: Clifford R. Lacey Sr. and Paulette J. Taylor; one granddaughter, Hope Ann Lacey; and one great-granddaughter, Kennedy R. Taylor.

There will be no calling hours. Burial will be private at the Fairview Cemetery in the spring.

It is hard, indeed, to currently pick up any newspaper or magazine to find any single subject discussed except the frightening new virus that is not only terrorizing the nation but is consuming the whole world. Even politics has been set aside. We just hear the same advise, over and over…”wash your hands and don’t panic.” This is hard advice to heed.

Reading this material I did see where there might be one ray of light. Because of the dreaded threat of over-population, for a long time there has been a law in China that only one child is allowed per married couple.

Today, because the threat of infection is so great it has become common to no longer shake hands, kiss or touch another human being in greeting (or for any other reason) and everyone must keep a comfortable distance from everyone else on all occasions.

If this new theory goes on for any length of time, it stands to reason that it will surely curb overpopulation in the United States

and possibly the world. It will definitely throw a curve to the legal houses of ill repute near Las Vagas and to the fabled “ladies of the night” on the streets of New York City. Great balls of fire!”

Nearly everyone has read about the terrible days of 1917 when the dreaded Spanish Influenza attacked the world’s population.

This terrible pandemic killed over 100 million victims, More human beings died in that influenza attack than died in the first World War. Even further back in the middle of the 14th Century, the Bubonic plague (Black Death) killed half the population of Europe.

This outbreak was believed to have been carried by fleas that infect rodents and squirrels which then bite humans. “It couldn’t happen again? Mother Nature tells us that it surely could!

LIFE GOES ON

My son, Maclane Hadden left last week, just as the flu epidemic was approaching its height, with his entourage for their annual spring trip to Mexico.

As a rule I am very happy to see them leave as a well deserved reward for their yearly hard work but this year I had visions of them breathing contaminated airline oxygen, being quarantined indefinitely behind locked resort doors, possibly living on moldy bread and water, in short supply, or ending up in a foreign hospital.

Oddly enough, everything turned out fine. He did tell me that attendance was down by about a third of what it was last

In reading about the history of Stony Creek, New York, I believe that the town always stayed small because of the knockout punches it received from the pestilence

year as cancellations were rampant and that he was amazed at the amount of people in the airport that wore masks. Not once did anyone offer to shake his hand.

I was very happy to have him return home but I do not really know if he is more safe here than he was there in that well sanitized resort.

WHERE ARE WE HEADED?

Human beings never fail to amaze me!

With grocery shelves stripped nearly clean, you would think that the people who might expect to be quarantined for quite some time would consider the most sought after item would be a ten pound sack of rice, but it is amazing to read that the most sold out item was a roll of toilet paper.

The president has worked diligently to get the country into the best shape that it has been in for many years, if ever, but just when we are starting to get really comfortable in our new blown prosperity, Mother Nature laughs at us and throws us this frightening curve.

One sure thing we know from reading past history is that it is going to get worse before it gets better. ■
