Railway operator sued by Warren County By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

QUEENSBURY | In an effort to collect unpaid revenue and property taxes, Warren County has sued the enterprise that formerly ran a railroad on the county’s rail corridor. The lawsuit was filed March 6, and county supervisors were informed of the action at their monthly meeting held March 15. Pursued in state Supreme Court, the lawsuit names Saratoga & North Creek Railway, its parent company Iowa Pacific Holdings of Chicago, and several rail lines that Iowa Pacific operates. Th claims that that Iowa Iowa Pacifi broke Thee suit suit claims Pacificc broke aa contract with the contract with the

county and seeks payment of $110,288, which represents unpaid revenue, property taxes and a water bill owed from 2017 and 2018 before the Saratoga & North Creek Railway stopped operating trains on the county-owned rail bed.

TANK CARS

In 2011, Warren County signed a contract with the owners of Saratoga-North Creek Railway and the enterprise began their operation. From that year through 2017, the rail operator transported passengers between Saratoga Springs and North Creek while seeking to establish a freight operation, which was minimal and sporadic over those half-dozen years. » Lawsuit Cont. on pg. 3

Nolan as well as Alex White, also of Thurman, received the Arrow of Light award, the highest rank in Cub Scouts. Reptile Adventure, based in Albany, had a variety of creatures for the children to observe and interact with.

WCS to hold ‘School Safety Forum’ Some parents want officers on duty By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

WARRENSBURG | A spirited debate is occurring in the Warrensburg Central School District community over whether or not police officers need to be stationed in the district’s two schools. In the wake of school shootings elsewhere in the U.S., some parents have called for police to be on duty in the hallways of Warrensburg Central’s elementary and high schools. In many suburban communities across the nation, however, parents and school administrators have said that a school’s focus should

be on social inclusion, bullying prevention, support for mental and emotional health, and counseling outreach. Some have said that guns don’t belong in schools, because they convey the wrong message, or that their presence escalates safety risks. All but two Warren County school districts have chosen to hire police, also known as school resource officers, but Warrensburg has chosen the approach of employing social workers, counselors and a school psychologist — and teacher training — to encourage emotional and social well-being.

FACEBOOK GROUP

But several parents of Warrensburg School District students including Erin McGrath started a Facebook group known as “WCSD Parents in Support of School Resource Officer,” and the group now has 72 members. » Safety forum Cont. on pg. 5

CHESTERTOWN | A wellness center with workout facilities and fitness training — as well as counseling and other programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle — is soon to be established in the Chester Municipal Center. The Town of Chester board passed a resolution March 6 in support of establishing a staffed wellness center at the town’s municipal building. The action was taken several weeks after the town board learned that a grant of about $128,000 from Adirondack Health Institute had been tentatively endorsed to help fund the center and its programming. Plans call for a ribbon cutting for the Chester Wellness Center to be held May 6. The center is to be located in a 1,200-square-feet secondfloor room that was a library decades ago when the facility was Chestertown’s public school. It will feature at least a dozen workout machines for strength building and aerobic development, according to
