Warren County COVID-19 cases jump 70% in a day By Thom Randall STAFF WRITER

WARREN COUNTY | On March 29, while New York’s coronavirus deaths surged by 33 percent in a single day to 965, Warren County’s number of confirmed COVID-19 cases jumped from 10 to 17, but no deaths of county residents had occurred as of midafternoon Sunday. The number of people hospitalized in Warren County, however, remained at three, as some who were recovering were discharged and quarantined at home, county

TENTS ARE UP BUT SUPPLIES ARE DOWN By Laurel Carroll STAFF WRITER

NORTHERN NEW YORK | To help accommodate the increasing need for coronavirus screenings and testing, Hudson Headwaters Health Network (HHHN) has set up two large tents—one at the West Mountain 2 Health Center in Queensbury, and the other in Champlain—with other HHHN sites utilizing smaller tents. In the last week and a half, HHHN providers have ordered or performed roughly 500 COVID-19 tests, some returning with positive results. Unfortunately, due to the statewide shortage of testing supplies, tests have now been restricted to symptomatic network health care providers. Working closely with HHHN, the University of Vermont, Elizabethtow n Communit y Hospital’s

The Johnsburg town board issued a notice on this topic, urging people from downstate — if they do come to the area — to bring with them all the food and supplies they need for a two-week quarantine at home, then when the sequestering is over, to adhere to social distancing mandates as well as always shopping solo. Johnsburg has declared that any visitors should not visit Adirondack-area convenience or grocery stores until after they’ve self-quarantined for two weeks, and then only if they are symptom-free. They advise the people who’ have already arrived here to call a local resident to shop for them or call the Johnsburg Town Hall and a volunteer will provide help. News reports have cited that rural getaway destinations across the nation have been swamped with a surge of people assuming they can avoid catching the virus by fleeing to the bucolic pastoral environs, but they end up bringing with them COVID-19, infecting many others, creating a strain on the rural health facilities. The Warren County Public Health Department can be reached at 518-761-6580, and the Essex County Health Department’s phone number is 518-873-3500. ■

Meanwhile, pronouncements

from U.S. government officials on March 29 were sobering. President Trump’s leading expert on the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Anthony Fauci, predicted on Sunday that 100,000 to 200,000 people in the U.S. could die from the disease within 12 months. He also said that “millions” of people were likely to contract the disease. Trump commented during the news conference that if these predictions weren’t surpassed, his administration would “have done a good job.” Sunday, federal officials reported that coronavirus-related deaths in the U.S. had surged to more than 2,000, double the number just two days beforehand. ■

said — and such facilities are vital in preventing as many deaths as possible. But those people who do come to the Adirondacks regardless of the warnings are asked to self-isolate for 14 days and check in with their respective county Health Department. Additionally, officials from both counties are requesting that all property owners remove their short-term rentals of Adirondackarea homes from AirBnb, Vrbo and similar online websites as soon as possible. Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman said that area health facilities even struggle to keep up with the needs of summer vacationers, and are incapable of handing an influx during this serious pandemic. New arrivals “should not have an expectation that resources will be available to you here,” he said. Local government officials have noted that the availability of food and other necessities is generally in very short supply especially in the remote areas of the Adirondacks, and that stores have been scrambling to merely keep up with the year-round residents’ needs.

WARREN COUNTY | Officials of both Warren and Essex counties are urging downstaters and others seeking to leave metropolitan and suburban areas to stay at home as Governor Cuomo has advised. In short, do not come to the Adirondack region during the coronavirus pandemic. People coming from New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Rockland counties as well as New Jersey should heed the warning, area health officials have advised. The reasoning for the warning is that the few local hospitals that exist in the region have extremely limited staff, equipment and facilities to take care of people that are likely to be unknowingly infected with the serious illness. The hospitals of clinics in the Adirondacks have few intensive care beds, if any, they’ve

epidemic subsides. As of March 29, state officials said there were a total of 59,513 confirmed cases of COVID-19 — with 8,503 hospitalized, including 2,037 in intensive care units, according to a report by Brendan Lyons of the Albany Times Union. Decades ago, Lyons was a reporter for the Glens Falls Post-Star. Despite the ever-increasing number of cases, hospital discharges across the state were rising daily last week, which included individuals which recovered. The Times Union reported that 846 people were discharged from hospitals and clinics overnight March 28.

Administrator Ryan Moore said. Of these confirmed cases, county Public Health Services documented three full recoveries as of March 29, while the remainder were receiving medical attention, Moore said. “We are confident in the quality of care they are receiving,” Moore said, noting that public health workers are working around the clock conducting interviews, and identifying exposures. These actions continue to prompt health workers to initiate quarantines, track and check in with quarantined patients, and confirm test results, he said. “We, and the individuals in our community who are living with the realities of coronavirus as we speak, are lucky to have these dedicated professionals,” Moore said in a prepared statement. Moore also asked Warren County residents to “remain vigilant” about staying home, wash hands often, and use hand sanitizer before and after visiting stores or other public places. He also asked that people support local restaurants that offer takeout or delivery — in order to help them survive the financial hardships stemming from their mandated closure. Moore also reiterated the county’s request for seasonal homeowners and area visitors — especially those who have come from downstate metropolitan areas and New Jersey — to self-isolate at home for at least 14 days in order to prevent a burden on area hospitals that would not
