Plastic prohibition push to persevere

Last week, county Public Works Superintendent Kevin Hajos identified 17 road paving and reconstruction projects that will be undertaken this year — and the work on a few of the roadways may begin in several weeks. Photo by Thom Randall

QUEENSBURY | Since 2011, a group of environmentally-conscious citizens have been giving presentations, visiting classrooms, circulating petitions and lobbying Warren County officials to enact a countywide ban on single-use plastic bags. Catherine Atherden, Diane Collins, Bernice Mennis, Lisa Adamson and other members of the sustainability group Tri-County Transition spent countless hours spreading information about how plastics kill marine animals and land-based wildlife, choke waterways, impede recycling efforts and litter the landscape. About two weeks ago, their mission was fulfilled in a scope they only imagined when they started their campaign — a statewide ban on plastic bags was enacted.

Boost in sales tax to bankroll more Warren County infrastructure upgrades

The measure, negotiated as part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 2020 budget deal, prohibits retailers from dispensing single-use plastic bags, which have been ubiquitous since the late 1970s. The ban begins in March 2020, giving stores the opportunity to use up their stock of bags and make a transition to alternatives. Exceptions to the prohibition include bags for takeout meals, for bulk produce and deli foods, or to protect garments.

With this pending prohibition, New York state joins California in a statewide ban — and all of Hawaii’s counties have passed similar prohibitions as well. Hundreds of cities in the U.S. now have similar laws.

QUEENSBURY | Robust sales tax revenue for Warren County is leading to more of its rough roadways to be paved this summer, if not earlier. On April 5, Warren County Public Works Superintendent Kevin Hajos revealed an expanded list of 20 roads to have stretches repaved or reconstructed this year — and 17 of these projects are located in the northern rural towns.

Short-term Board mulls Chester’s municipal rental ban water clarity, tank renovation lifted for some zones Lake George property owners take case to board By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

POTTERSVILLE | The Town of Chester’s project to paint its municipal water tank on Spring Street will likely be costing taxpayers far less than estimated late last year. The Chester town board received one bid from Norman Guidie Painting of Schroon Lake for $62,500 to paint the town water tank, Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett announced at the town board’s March meeting.

“I’m pleased to bring this good news to the public,” Leggett said April 8, adding a cautionary remark that the cost of the project may increase, depending on an upcoming inspection of the inside of the tank by the state Department of Health. “Our board’s focus is on cost-efficiency, and this project serves as an example of that objective,” he said. The town board voted to refer Guidie Painting’s bid to Cedarwood Engineering for their review.

VACATIONS RUINED

LAKE GEORGE | Pleas voiced by a number of property owners in the Town of Lake George — who have recently been barred from renting out their homes to vacationers — prompted the town board to change the town’s shortterm rental law on the spot April 8. The board voted to amend their zoning laws to allow daily and weekly rentals in Lake George’s “RH” residential zones where they have been banned since the rental law was enacted just weeks ago.

In other business, several comments on the town’s proposed Property Maintenance Law were heard. Board member Karen LaRose asked whether the law’s stipulations restricted yard sales to weekends, and town Zoning Officer Tom Thorsen replied that they did. Leggett said he would like to have some changes to the proposed law, so the public hearing was extended to the April meeting. Also, Curt Austin requested to hold his Porsche 926 vehicle rally car show, planned for Saturday, June 15, on the lawn of the town Municipal Center. The board authorized the rally to be held as Austin requested with the stipulation that the premises be maintained in good condition. As the March meeting was held in the Pottersville firehouse, local resident Mary Clark asked about when the sidewalks in Pottersville would be reconstructed. Leggett replied that weather permitting, the work is expected to begin by mid-May. Resident Pat Powers asked about weed control for the hamlet, and Leggett replied that town property in Pottersville will be treated to curb weed growth. Leggett stated that the Town received correspondence from June Maxam on Foster Flats Road objecting to the annual lineup on her street for the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

‘People’s Pixel Project’ to screen ‘mixed bag’ By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

HUDSON FALLS | Over the last decade, the Lake George Arts Project has annually presented a juried presentation of short videos and films known as the “People’s Pixel Project.” The program has connected videographers and filmmakers — semi-professionals, amateurs and students — with an audience that enjoys imaginative two-dimensional art in motion. This year, the People’s Pixel Project celebrates its 10th anniversary. The 2019 program — featuring 22 films and videos — is to be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in the Strand Theater, Hudson Falls. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door. » Rental Ban Cont. from pg. 1 compound of houses on Robin Lane, noted that his family members depend on the income from rentals to vacationers, a practice his family has conducted for 10 years. Another town resident, Marc Connally of McGowan Circle, also noted how the short-term rental ban would crimp his retirement and negatively affect his entire extended family — as well as how some vacationers would be booking their trips elsewhere. Farrell described how he contacted those who had booked rentals with him for this summer, and they were disappointed. “This has ruined the vacations of 11 families,” he said.

“It’s counterproductive if we’re trying to increase business in our region.” Donald Partyka of Robin Lane said his 77-year-old aunt — a seasonal resident since 1953 — would lose income that allows her the ability to keep and maintain her home.

UNANIMOUS VOTE

Town Planning Director Dan Barusch said the intent of the law was to prevent degradation of residential neighborhoods that can accompany short-term rentals. Board member Vinny Crocitto said the rental restrictions were enacted in response to complaints from some residents in town about problematic incidences and conditions at rental properties.

» Bag Ban Cont. from pg. 1 “It’s been a long haul, but I’m very pleased the ban was finally passed,” Atherden said. “Entire nations have banned single-use plastic bags — elsewhere, they know how disastrous they are environmentally.” In early 1997, the Tri-County Transition members recruited Glens Falls Ward 3 Supervisor Claudia Braymer for their cause. She drafted a proposed law and lobbied the county’s other supervisors to adopt a countywide bag ban. The latest version of Braymer’s law was scheduled for a public hearing April 19, » Water Cont. from pg. 1 The board, however, passed a resolution granting permission for the parade assembling there. Also, the board accepted the resignation of Jane O’Connell from her post as a trustee of the Chester Library. Board members expressed appreciation for her service to the town. In addition, the board granted permission for Leggett to apply for grant funding to reconfigure the town Municipal Center auditorium, which includes installing a movable stage so the gym floor, now obstructed by a permanent stage, can be expanded to serve as a basketball court as

Arts Project Gallery Director Laura Von Rosk, coordinator of the program, said each film or video to be presented offers a distinctive vision. “The program features narrative works, animation and documentary-style films,” she said. “Some are beautiful, several are poetic, some are really ‘out there’ and others are wacky teenage videos which can be refreshing and fun — It’s a real mixed bag.” Von Rosk noted that the program has a fast pace, as some films last less than two minutes, and most all are under five minutes long. Several of the videos are classics from previous years. Area filmmakers and videographers submitting work include: poet Marilyn McCabe of Saratoga Springs; employees of the SUNY Adirondack marketing department including

Doug Gruse, Bill Dzialo and Jason Pelletier; Mark Spitzer of Queensbury; Jacob Anderson of Glens Falls, and a four-minute film by photographer William Jaeger, a former Times Union arts reviewer.

All three property owners contended that renting out their homes did not take business away from hotels or motels, and that their renters didn’t cause disturbances. After about 20 minutes of discussion, the board voted unanimously to remove RH residential zones from those specified in their zoning laws as off-limits for short-term rentals. Partyka was taken off-guard by the board’s quick action. “Im glad the board was very just in weighing all sides of the issue,” he said. “I’m surprised at the empathy they showed.” Connally said he didn’t expect such a speedy, favorable decision.

but the issue is now moot — and this abandonment of her measure doesn’t bother her at all. “Oh man, am I happy about the statewide ban,” Braymer said. “It’s better than one just for our county, because shoppers won’t be bringing bags across the border from neighboring counties.” Next on her agenda, Braymer said, is to campaign for the county to enact a charge for paper bags, as a way to prompt shoppers to utilize reusable cloth bags instead of the paper variety — which consume a considerable amount of energy in their production. Also, she

it did decades ago when the building hosted the Chestertown school. The board also granted permission for Leggett to apply for grants to fund replacement of playground equipment at the town park in Pottersville. Frank Allard inquired about who was going to pay for a new well at the Loon Lake Beach. Allard said he would like to see the cost borne by all town property owners, not just the residents of the Loon Lake Park District. Packer asked if occupancy tax could be used to pay for the well. Leggett said he would look into the idea. Pottersville resident Chris

“I’m pleased with the board’s accommodation for people in the community,” he said. “I didn’t expect it.” In addition, the board passed another amendment — a “grandfathering” clause to the rentals in RH residential zones — so that those homeowners who were specifically identified by the town planning department as shortterm renters prior to the rental ban being passed, would be allowed to continue if they met all the restrictions and standards in the code and did not prompt three or more complaints from neighbors. The ordinance amendments restore rental privileges to some medium- and low-density residential areas and land conservation zones. ■

is working to convince county leaders that the government should adopt environmentally conscious measures and become certified as a “Clean Energy Community.”

PLASTIC BOTTLES

Atherden is also contemplating her next goal — reducing another source of the ever-increasing problem of plastic pollution. “I’ll be campaigning to restrict plastic bottles,” she said. “Single-use plastic is unnecessary — it only exists because we are addicted to convenience.” ■

Aiken inquired about the coloration and contamination of municipal water in Pottersville. Leggett explained how the present configuration of the transmission lines and water tank and its

elevation caused the lack of clarity. Edna Wells suggested that people in the Pottersvllle Water District run their water for a few minutes to clear the contamination. ■

“Mare Nubium,” an experimental work by Saratoga Springs poet Mary Kathryn Jablonski and visual artist Laura Frare of Porters Corners, features Jablonski reading one of her poems over depictions of Frare’s artwork. Two of the submissions are from Plattsburgh-area residents. Most all of the remaining entries are from residents of the capital region. “The People’s Pixel Project has been a great way for people to get their work out in front of the public,” she said. “It’s a great community event.” The event features the “People’s Choice Audience Award” — the film or video so honored will be screened at the 2019 Adirondack Film Festival. For more information, call the Lake George Arts Project at 518-668-2616. ■

» Paving Cont. from pg. 1 One additional project, perhaps the highest-profile task, is to completely reconstruct Main Street in the hamlet of North Creek from state Route 28 to the town hall. This work to fully replace about a halfmile of roadway had been delayed for several years to allow new water lines to be installed. Hajos said a contractor will be tackling the project this summer. Recently, the county Board of Supervisors decided to commit an additional $832,000 to road repaving and reconstruction, so the budget for such upgrades now totals about $3.8 million in local, state and federal funding. The extra money devoted to road upgrades was prompted by an increase in 2018 of about 5.5 percent in sales tax revenue, resulting in $2.2 million more in available county funds than budgeted for the year. The 17 upcounty roadways to be upgraded are listed by towns, followed by the estimated lengths of roadway to be repaved or reconstructed: • In Johnsburg: 13th Lake Road, 1 mile; Peaceful Valley Road, 0.5 miles; Gore Mountain Road, 1.3 miles. • In Chester: Friends Lake Road, 0.81 miles; Knapp Hill Road, 1.42 miles.

• In Stony Creek: Warrensburg Road, 0.8 miles. • In Hague: West Hague Road, 0.3 miles; New Hague Road, 1.44 miles. • In Lake George: Bloody Pond Road, 0.58 miles.

• In Horicon: East Shore Drive, 2.27 miles; Beaver Pond Road, 0.12 miles.

• In Warrensburg: Golf Course Road, 1.07 miles; Harrington Hill Road, 0.7 miles.

• In Bolton: Federal Hill Road, 0.97 miles; Coolidge Hill Road, 1.6 miles.

• In Thurman: High Street, 0.48 miles; Glen-Athol Road, 1 mile.

This latter roadway will be subjected to full reconstruction due to repeated freezing and thawing this last winter, Hajos said. A number of other roadways, including Olmstedville Road in Chester, are to receive temporary repairs, pending more extensive upgrades in upcoming seasons. In addition to scattered pothole repairs throughout all the area towns, Warren County has scheduled crews to seal pavement cracks along 20 miles of their roadways. Also, the Board of Supervisors’ Finance Committee voted last week to commit a total of $2.57 million toward three projects to replace culverts — one under 13th Lake Road in Johnsburg, one carrying Bennie Brook under Call Street in Lake Luzerne and another taking Finkle Brook under Horicon Avenue in Bolton. ■

Three charged with defrauding banks

QUEENSBURY | Three women have been arrested by Warren County Sheriffs following an investigation into reports of fraud and theft from several banks. Brandy L. Hill, 38, Andrea R. Commisso, 33, and Kendra L. Freeman, 35, were charged after an investigation into fraud and theft complaints from multiple local banks. The investigation initially began in September 2018 when Hill reported fraudulent activity on her personal bank account to law enforcement. In December 2018, Commisso reported to members of the Warren County Sheriff’s Office that her bank account was compromised and fraudulent activity was discovered. Sheriff’s Office Investigators were able to link the complaints together and determined that both Hill’s and Commisso’s respective bank accounts were not illegally accessed and they, along with Freeman, participated in a scheme to steal the money, report it as stolen and defraud the area banks. Police charged Hill with filing a false police report and petit larceny, both class A misdemeanors. Police charged Commisso with filing a false police report, making a false punishable written statement, a class A misdemeanor, and grand larceny in the fourth degree, a class E felony. Police charged Freeman with petit larceny and grand larceny in the fourth degree. All of the subjects were arrested and released on recognizance and scheduled to return to the Queensbury Town Court April 15 at 9 a.m. ■

One hundred years ago – April 1919 residences. This was only accomplished because of little wind.

By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST

Mr. McAuliffe estimates his loss at $6,000. The property was insured for $3,000.

SUGAR MAKERS FACE DOOM AND GLOOM

The recent storm raised hob with some of the sugar makers in this locality. The pouring rain filled many of the sap buckets, and then when this was followed by a freeze, the rain water froze in the buckets and many of them burst. In one camp in south Johnsburgh, 140 buckets froze and burst.

HOTEL HISTORY

The Wevertown Hotel was one of the oldest in Warren County. For 60 years, it had furnished entertainment for man and beast and years ago it was one of the most popular and profitable enterprises in this section. It was established in 1860 and was conducted by William Roblee and John Loveland. In 1867, the structure was rebuilt and enlarged being transformed into a three story building with basement. There was a large ballroom in the third story in which frequent dances were given in the old days, attracting large crowds from the countryside.

FIRE DESTROYS HISTORIC LANDMARK

The Wevertown Hotel, conducted by Edward McAuliffe, was destroyed by fire Thursday night, April 3, 1919. The blaze started from a defective chimney in the attic and was inaccessible, therefore with the meager fire fighting facilities at hand, the structure was doomed from the first.

Mr. Loveland was elected sheriff some time in the 1870s, and the hotel was then purchased by J.M. Waddell, who was known as “the blind man,” having lost his sight in youth. Mr. McAuliffe bought the hotel two years ago and says that he will rebuild as soon as possible.

An alarm was given by telephone along the line in all directions and an efficient bucket brigade was rapidly organized. Quickly finding that nothing could be done to save the hotel, the efforts of the workers were concentrated upon protecting the adjoining buildings, L.T. Eldridge’s store, the Odd Fellows building and nearby

A paragraph in a newspaper printed a little more than 40 years ago (1879) complains that “six cents for a pound of roast beef or seven cents for a pound of juicy steak is more than in keeping with the situation than the 10 cents in the one case and 15 in the other that we have been called upon to pay in recent days.”

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

The story behind the story: Part III

ANt>HERE IS

FoRECAS>T

The past few weeks I’ve been addressing issues with the newspaper industry and this column will continue along that same line. My thought this week was to focus on the free newspaper model we’ve been developing here at The Sun and why I believe it has greater sustainability moving forward than the traditional paid model, which has been in decline for the last By Dan Alexander 15 to 20 years. • PUBLISHER • Unfortunately at this weekend’s annual New York Press Association Conference, a surprising story was unfolding regarding the Watertown Daily Times and its sister publications including the Malone Telegraph. An editorial in last Thursday’s paper written by Alec E. Johnson, managing editor for the northern New York newspapers, disclosed some alarming news. Citing a Pew Research Study as a backdrop that generally finds newspapers throughout the country were in good financial shape, he reports that the past decade had been the worst on record for many newspapers including those in their group.

Letters

Thankful for ‘dynamic pharmacist duo’

To the Editor: Editor’s note: This letter references Berneice Conlon’s letter, “Grateful for help at Walgreens,” which appeared in the April 6 edition of The Sun. Last week, one of your readers wrote about the wonderful job Christine Williams, pharmacist at Walgreens in Chestertown, was doing. Could not agree more. But it would be remiss not to also recognize Lori Mosher the other regular pharmacist working with Ms. Williams. Together they provide outstanding service. The community is fortunate to have this dynamic pharmacist duo. Thanks to both for their service. - David Gottesman, North Creek ■

More disturbing was the announcement that he and his cousin had just informed their employees that paychecks expected that day would be delayed due to sharp declines in advertising and circulation revenue. The Johnson family, fourth generation steward of the Daily Times, is a well-respected organization throughout the industry and this news as you might expect put quite a hush on the attendees at the conference. Mr. Johnson goes on to explain that in the coming weeks, the organization will be forced to re-evaluate all their properties and attempt to recreate their business model.

Occupancy tax will harm local businesses

To the Editor: Editor’s note: This letter references Elizabeth Izzo’s article, “Essex County seeks occupancy tax hike,” which appeared in the April 6 edition of The Sun. I am commenting on the article in a recent edition, “Essex County seeks occupancy tax hike.” First of all, people must realize the occupancy tax is not paid by people visiting Essex County. It is paid by local businesses, waiters and waitresses, store owners, etc. When a person or family goes on vacation, they usually budget a certain amount for that vacation. Let’s say that’s $5,000. That $5,000 will be spent in and around the vacation area. Those funds will be paid to hotels/motels, restaurants, stores, rental agencies, etc. If you listen to the “supervisors,” these vacationers decide to come to Essex County and decide to spend $5,000. Then, the vacationers say “We need to bring an extra $200 because the Essex County Board of Supervisors just raised the occupancy tax from 3 percent to 5 percent!” You think that happens? Or do you think the vacationers just deduct the new tax amount from their total vacation budget? Another comment is that any promotional material for Essex County should come with the following warning: “Vacationing in Essex County, New York will expose you to

In the editorial, Mr. Johnson notes that without the lost revenue, to maintain their current levels, the newspaper’s subscription cost would likely need to go from $291 per year to about $1,000. This will be no easy task for the venerable publishing group, but if any organization of their size and scope can accomplish this task, they certainly stand the best chance of creating a profitable new business model. The difficulty they face developing a new model on the fly is much like the re-engineering an airplane engine in flight before they land. The Sun weaned itself of circulation revenue long ago and learned to operate strictly on advertising income. It has allowed us to operate more like the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk when they perfected the new mode of air transportation. We wish our neighbor to the west the very best and are rooting for their quick return to profitability. ■

Resources available for those impacted by ‘Unplanned’

To the Editor: My response to the movie “Unplanned”: I was given the opportunity to coordinate a prerelease of “Unplanned” thanks to the hard work by 40DFL National Team. We had a full house and everyone I spoke with was very grateful to be able to see the movie. “Unplanned” was produced quite simply and truthfully, following the book of the same title. The movie is bloody — as is abortion. Two abortion procedures were shown: 1) Medical, where the child is sucked out of the womb at 13th week of pregnancy. 2) Chemical, done prior to the ninth week, first pill destroys the baby, second pill expels the baby. Most people aren’t aware there are doctors trained to do abortion pill reversal, a baby’s life can be rescued if the mother changes her mind after that first pill. The movie did not go into too much detail of what happens to the mother of the baby that has been aborted. Many of the women looked sad, confused, angry, betrayed. Post abortion syndrome can go on for years, silently, leaving women and men feeling they are alone, unable to find forgiveness. There are many healing programs available for women, men, grandparents, anyone who is negatively affected from an abortion. Because the movie affects everyone in many different ways, contact information was made available at the end of the movie. If you would like to speak to someone, just call or text to 855801-4673. Someone who cares is waiting to speak with you. - Nancy Belzile, Willsboro ■ This free community newspaper exists to serve the informational needs of the community and to stimulate a robust local economy. serious diseases caused by the bite of ticks which are rampant in this area. These diseases can last a lifetime…come to Essex County at your own risk…and the governor of the state just wiped out the research budget for this very serious condition.” Gov. Cuomo just passed a budget that eliminated the $1,000,000 that was in last year’s budget for tick/lyme research. One million wasn’t enough, but this year the amount is “zero.” Shows you what Cuomo thinks of the North Country! Wrestling coach honored Softball teams

start off 2019 showing strength

By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

Warrensburg High School Principal Doug Duell (left) and the school’s head wrestling coach Mark Trapasso (right) pose for posterity soon after Duell presented Trapasso with an outstanding-achievement award March 17 for his wrestling teams’ successes, particularly over the last four years. Photo provided

Leonard Baker, Cody Rumble, Nate Brown and various alumni including Leonard Baker Jr. Reflecting on the award, Trapasso deferred credit to others. “I was very surprised and quite overwhelmed with the honor,” he said. “A lot of coaches and the athletes themselves were responsible for my teams’ successes.” ■

Burghers begin with athleticism, focus By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

WARRENSBURG | The baseball players of Warrensburg are likely to have a successful season if they continue playing with as much intensity as they have in the 2019 season’s opening week. On April 3, Warrensburg defeated Doane Stuart, 13-0, and the next day, they were edged out by perennial powerhouse Fort Ann by a score of 9-8. Although the latter game was a loss, it was against the team that won the 2017 state Class D championship. Last year, after losing four seniors including two NCAA Division I pitchers, the Cardinals won the Adirondack League’s small-school Division III. But this year’s team didn’t lose a single player to graduation. In this second game of the 2019 season — played at Hudson Falls High — Warrensburg had 11 hits while Fort Ann had eight. Highlights of the game include junior outfielder Travis Passage — 3-for-4 at the plate — hitting a triple and a double, as well as scoring three runs. Contributing offensively were senior Evan MacDuff with one run and one hit; junior J.J. Giron with two runs, one hit and two RBIs; senior Dan Kelly with one run and two hits; junior Bill Cameron with two hits and an RBI; junior Travis Passage with three runs and two hits; junior Mac Baker with one run and one hit; and seniors Peyton Olden and Chris Wilson, each with one hit and an RBI. MacDuff,

Giron and Kelly each stole a base. Although Warrensburg and Fort Ann are both Adirondack League members, the game was not scheduled as a league game. Pitching for the Burghers was newcomer Bill Cameron — who managed four strikeouts, and silenced the bats of several of Fort Ann’s top hitters from 2018. Mac Baker pitched the final two innings. Between the two of them, Baker and Cameron kept Fort Ann from scoring over the final four innings. For the Cardinals, Jack Dornan was the starting pitcher, and Luke Loso, All-star pitcher for the Cardinals, was credited with the save. A day earlier, Warrensburg defeated Doane Stuart by a score of 13-0. MacDuff — experienced as both a catcher and pitcher — was on the mound over four innings and hurled nine strikeouts. Baker pitched the final inning, achieving two strikeouts during this nonleague game held at Babe Ruth Field in Albany. Both MacDuff and Wilson had doubles, and sophomore Zach Carpenter hit a triple. McDuff had two runs two hits and an RBI; while Carpenter and Passage were credited with one run, one hit and one RBI. Kelly scored two runs; Cameron scored one run and earned a hit; and Baker had a hit and two RBIs. Also, Olden tallied one hit and three runs; Wilson was credited with two runs, two hits and three RBIs, and junior Jesse Griffin scored a run. As of April 7, the baseball teams of Lake George and North Warren had not yet held their first game of the season. ■

In other softball action this week, Warrensburg defeated Bolton-Schroon Lake April 4 by a score of 26-0 with senior Mikayla Rothermel and junior Sophie Reed pitching. Highlights of the nonleague game included a home run and a double by senior Megan Hughes. Rothermel was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Hughes 3-for-5 in the five-inning game. Two days earlier, Warrensburg lost a nonleague game to Hudson Falls, which has an enrollment nearly three times Warrensburg’s. Rothermel pitched the game, which opened the season for both teams.

QUEENSBURY | Although snowbanks still persist, the softball teams of northern Warren County have launched their schedules, demonstrating their potential for 2019. Last week, the Lake George Warriors defeated reigning state champions Fort Ann 1-0 in a battle that featured two state all-star pitchers — Rebecca Jaeger for Lake George and Kayla Bailey for Fort Ann. Both were credited with six strikeouts each. Lake George’s all-state pitcher With Jaeger playing a key role Rebecca Jaeger, shown here on both offense and defense, hurling as a sophomore, opened the game was played indoors up the Warriors’ 2019 season April 3 in the Adirondack last week with a victory over Sports Complex. A senior, reigning state Class D chamJaeger is now playing her fifth pions Fort Ann. year as Lake George’s startPhoto by Thom Randall ing pitcher. Lake George’s run was scored in the fourth inning by sophomore Tyler Bergman after she walked, stole second base and ran home on a double slugged by Jaeger. Cardinal all-state junior Sarah Paige connected for a single, her team’s only hit of the game. The prior day, Lake George defeated Hoosic Valley 19-5 in their first of three early-season nonleague games. Also played at “the Dome,” this battle featured 15 hits by the Warriors. Jaeger pitched, garnering seven strikeouts. On offense, she scored two runs and tallied three hits and five RBIs. Aiding her were Bergman with three runs, three hits and six RBIs; Jaeger’s sophomore sister Rachel Jaeger with one run, one hit and two RBIs; senior Julia Heunemann with one run and two hits; sophomore Madeline Gorey, two runs and one hit; sophomore Olivia Gates, two runs and two hits; senior Alysia Kane, two runs and one hit; junior Ava Pushor, three runs and two hits; sophomore Alli Zilm, two runs and one hit; and freshman Brooke Benjamin, one run. Last season, the Warriors’ Section II Class C tournament campaign ended in a 4-5 loss in the quarterfinals, while Fort Ann took the Class D state championship with a 4-3 victory over three-time champions Deposit of Section IV. Bailey was named co-player of 2018 statewide, and Fort Ann’s coach Jason Humiston, who for many years was athletic director and multi-sport coach at North Warren Central, was named state co-coach of the year. The Warriors lost six seniors to graduation last June.

WARRENSBURG | The head wrestling coach at Warrensburg High School has received an award honoring him for years of success with his varsity team. At the school’s winter sports banquet held March 17 at Ridin’ Hy Ranch Resort, Mark Trapasso was presented with an outstanding-achievement award by high school principal Doug Duell on behalf of the school’s administration, staff, students and board of education. The plaque presented to Trapasso cited his teams’ four consecutive Adirondack League championships, four straight Class D championships and three consecutive Section II Division 2 championships. The award also hails Trapasso for his squads earning the right in 2018 and 2019 to represent Section II in the New York state team championship tournament, as well as coaching his athletes to achieve a four-year dual meet win-loss record of 93-13. Such a tally has been unmatched in the region. In addition, the Warrensburg wrestling team has won a large percentage of the tournaments it has entered over the past several years. This year, Warrensburg had five wrestlers representing the school in the state tournament — a first ever for the school, and quite unusual for any team in the region. Last year, Trapasso was honored as Section II Division 2 Coach of the Year by vote of the section’s coaches. He also was named area Division 2 Coach of 2018 by the Times Union in Albany for his team’s accomplishments. The award noted that across all weight classes, the wrestlers performed at a high level. Trapasso took on the position of head coach in late 1995 after being named assistant coach for Warrensburg in 1984. Burgher wrestlers, team alumni and school officials have all praised Trapasso for his encouraging, supportive attitude — as well as his high expectations and astute advice on wrestling moves. He has also been hailed for getting to know his wrestlers individually, helping them build on their strengths and having a sincere interest in their future. In presenting the plaque, Duell also recognized the dedication of the assistant coaches and the support of fans — students, parents, team alumni and area residents. The team’s assistant coaches are Scott McKenna, Brian Winchell,
