Chester Wellness Center launched Officials envision it will enhance citizens’ lives By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

North Warren vote to feature proposal on school upgrades By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
CHESTERTOWN | In addition to deciding on school board candidates and whether to ratify the 2019-20 district budget, residents of the North Warren School District will be voting on a proposition to approve spending up to $551,000 of the school district’s savings for upgrades to their school facilities. Expenditure of the sum, to be drawn from a capital
reserve account, would have no effect on the upcoming year’s tax levy, according to school officials. The upgrades include conversion of parking lot lighting — at both the main school building and the bus garage — to LED fi xtures, which are more energy efficient and are expected to save money on electricity costs in upcoming years. Also, the proposal calls for installing an accessible walkway to the baseball field and adding safety netting to protect players and spectators. » Budget Cont. on pg. 2

LAKE GEORGE | The Town of Lake George has a new employee in charge of maintenance and repair of its roadways. During the town board’s May 13 meeting, Rob Lanfear was named the town’s superintendent of highways. Lanfear replaces Dan Davis, who simultaneously retired from the post. Lanfear enjoys the thought of following in the footsteps of his father, Bob Lanfear, who was the town’s superintendent of highways, working for the town for 22 years until he retired in the late 1980s. “I’m excited about this,” he said of his new position. “Th is just feels right.”
Town officials said Rob Lanfear has considerable experience in the field of road construction and heavy equipment operation. Lanfear has been employed in the field for 20-plus years, including running his own excavation business for the last decade. For years, Rob Lanfear has worked as a private contractor with Lake George town and village public works employees — on various projects. He also has performed work for the Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District personnel on their pursuits. Lanfear said he has no plans at this point to make any changes in the department, noting that the existing employees are knowledgeable and perform their duties well. Lanfear said his initial objective will be to

During a public tour May 8 of the new Chester Wellness Center, YMCA Adirondack Center Director Tammie LaGuerre and Glens Falls YMCA chief executive Brian Bearor share their thoughts about how they expect the Wellness Center to become a popular destination for socializing as well as exercising for residents of northern Warren and southern Essex counties.
During the grand opening ceremonies of the Chester Wellness Center on May 8, Hudson Headwaters President Dominick Bizzarro talks of how his organization will be referring dozens of people to the facility to help them overcome stress and isolation as well as dealing with various health issues. » Wellness center Cont. from pg. 1 About 60 people gathered for a ribboncutting ceremony for the Chester Wellness Center, which is intended to serve people from the towns of Chester, Horicon, Johnsburg, Warrensburg, Minerva and Schroon Lake. “For years, people in our area have voiced the need for a place to exercise, to convene and to help them get out and stay fit,” Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett said at the center’s grand opening ceremony. “The ways and means of maintaining our health are limited here in the North Country — distance, cost and climate are barriers, and this Wellness Center is a huge step over those obstacles.” Establishing the Wellness Center was hailed at the ceremony as a innovative partnership between the Glens Falls Area YMCA, the Town of Chester, Hudson Headwaters Health Network, Turning Leaf Counseling Services and Adirondack Health Institute. The latter

organization facilitated a $129,197 state grant intended to boost wellness in rural areas and reduce hospital visits by 25 percent over the next five years. “The vision of this collaborative effort is to increase access to overall wellness services in the Southern Adirondacks,” said Brian Bearor, CEO of the regional YMCA.
PROGRAMS
Equipped with a dozen fitness and musclebuilding devices, the new facility is located on the second floor of the Chester Municipal Center where various other community services are located, including the Chester Mealsite, the local Helpers Fund food pantry and the town library. Programs of the Chester-Horicon Youth Commission and the YMCA Adirondack Center are also conducted in the expansive building that hosts local government. The Wellness Center — which will be

offering fitness training and programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle — is now accepting memberships. Scholarships will be available for people with limited incomes — staff of the Wellness Center said this week that no one would be turned away for lack of ability to pay. Personnel at the center will also be referring people to individual and family counseling services that will be available in the building. Dominick Bizzarro, president of Hudson Headwaters Health Network, said the Adirondacks are beautiful, but its residents can feel isolated — and the Wellnesss Center would be a vital antidote to that malady. “People here in the Adirondacks have particular challenges that you see elsewhere in rural America — lack of indoor activities, lack of wellness education and mental health services,” he said.
‘UNITE AND INTEGRATE’
Bizzarro said that it was Hudson Headwater’s goal to refer 130 people this year to the Wellness Center’s services and facility — to help people deal with conditions including high blood pressure, cardiac disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, excess weight, stress, ADHD and other mental health issues. “This center’s programs will really help unite and integrate medical care with all the social services — so people get social interaction in addition to the physical activity that’s needed — so we can have people healthy of mind, healthy in spirit and healthy physically,” he said. Bearor, Leggett and others urged people to donate their time and talents to help make “Phase 2” of the Wellness Center a reality — restoring the gymnasium of the municipal center, formerly Chestertown’s school — so it can better accommodate basketball and other sports activities for both adults and youth. ■

Improvements inside the school building include installing an elevator into an existing shaft in the elementary wing — along with the associated electrical and cooling amenities — to provide better access. The plan also features upgrades to the ventilation system in the school’s technology center to allow inclusion of a welding instruction program, which Superintendent Michele French has said would impart key skills to many students interested in pursuing this in-demand trade. The proposed 2019-20 budget, detailed in last week’s issue of The Sun, calls for a 0.96 percent increase in the tax levy. The vote is to be held from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, in the school’s gymnasium. The school’s spring concert is to be held at 6:30 p.m. that evening, and a student art show is to be on display. ■

One dead, one injured after fall from roof CHESTER | Warren County Sheriff ’s Deputies were called to a residence in the Town of Chester for a male who had fallen from a roof while removing the existing shingles May 8. The victim was identified as Gary Bogdan, 55, from Hadley. Bogdan and his family had recently purchased the two-story Cape
Cod style home that had sat dormant and unfinished for 27 years. Gary Bogdan and his 27-year-old nephew, Adam Bogdan, of Broadalbin, were scraping off the roof shingles while standing on a plank that was anchored into the roof. Police said it appeared that while scraping off the roof shingles, Gary Bogdan
may have struck the bracket with the tool and sheared off the nails that were holding his bracket in place, causing it to dislodge and both men to fall 20 feet to the ground below. Chestertown Fire and North Warren EMS responded to the scene and attempted resuscitation efforts on Gary Bogdan, but
he was declared dead at the site. Adam Bogdan sustained an injury to his arm and possible internal injuries. He was transported to Glens Falls Hospital by Warrensburg EMS. The investigation is being conducted by Investigator Lail of the Warren County Sheriff ’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit. ■

Strengthened services for North Country seniors
The generations before us built our communities from the ground up. Whether they founded the local businesses we know and love, helped us find our passion in the By Billy Jones classroom or passed on immea• GUEST COLUMNIST • surable knowledge, we owe them a great debt of gratitude. They deserve to have consistent access to the vital resources and services that will help them stay healthy, be active in our community and learn new skills. Here in the North Country, we know how important it is to look out for our seniors. From delivering healthy meals to offering guidance on navigating the digital world, our local county offices for the aging offer services and programs that can make life easier and more affordable, many of which are directly supported by this year’s state budget. To ensure seniors have access to critical healthcare services, the 2019-20 state budget restores $550 million in services previously not included in the executive proposal, such as $222 million to restore the 2 percent rate increase for hospitals and the 1.5 percent rate increase for nursing homes. Additionally, $5.9 million was included to help preserve the right of spousal refusal, which allows individuals to obtain care without impoverishing their spouse. The budget also restores $31 million in pharmacy reductions to protect access to affordable prescription coverage. To help aging New Yorkers stay in their homes and neighborhoods, the budget includes $65.1 million for Expanded In-home Services for the Elderly (EISEP) — $15 million of that will provide local offices for the aging with critical funding to help keep seniors out of nursing facilities and provide them with personal care and housekeeping assistance so that they can stay in their homes. In today’s rapidly advancing technological world, the internet not only allows access to information and resources, but can also be a great way to stay in touch with friends and family. That’s why a longstanding priority of mine has been helping seniors connect to the internet through the Older American Technology Services, Inc.’s (OATS) Senior Planet program, which offers free digital technology courses at the Champlain Centre mall and the Malone Adult Center. The budget included $200,000 for this essential program. Another way the budget looks out for seniors, many of whom live on a fixed income, is by adding several measures to provide property tax relief. It has been proven that seniors who are able to remain in their homes and age in place live happier and healthier lives. This critical tax relief will help ensure seniors aren’t priced out of the homes where they’ve built their lives and raised their families. The county offices for the aging across the North Country offer community navigators that can help you and your family find the health services and social support you need to make the most of your retirement. To find out more about these programs, I encourage you reach out to your local office. My door is also always open. Please don’t hesitate to contact my office with questions about this or any other community issue at 518562-1986 or JonesB@nyassembly.gov. ■ - Billy Jones is the assemblyman for the 115th District of the New York State Assembly.

ACA outcry echoes outrage over Medicare
To the Editor: When Medicare was first conceived in the early 1960s, the public was deeply divided and similar warnings were voiced. Embodying the conservative movement’s sentiments at the time was Ronald Reagan, who taped a recording on behalf of the American Medical Association, warning that the program would, quite simply, “lead to the destruction of freedom.” Ronald Reagan said, “If Medicare passes into law, the consequences will be dire beyond imagining.” If opponents failed to scuttle it, he warned, “One of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children, what it once was like in America when men were free.” Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater, in 1964, likened Medicare to free vacations and beer. “Having given our pensioners their medical care in kind,” he said, “why not food baskets, why not public housing accommodations, why not vacation resorts, why not a ration of cigarettes for those who smoke and of beer for those who drink?” Fact: Medicare has been the greatest program for Americans, proposed by Democrat Aime J. Forand and passed during the Johnson (Democratic) administration, contrary to the Republican “Dooms Day” attitude. Fact: The United States is the only country on Earth that does not have a health plan for all of its citizens. During his campaign, Trump boasted about how he would scrap the Affordable Care Act and provide a “Better, cheaper plan” to replace it. As usual, it was one of his many hollow campaign lies, and we will never see any such plan. If all the other countries in the world can provide health care for their citizens, why is it so hard for Republicans to work with Democrats to give Americans the same? - Joe DeMarco, Jay ■

County government is in going with the so-called flow? It seems to me that if there were any thought behind this new project, that the town would ask Stewart’s to take the corner across from the Chevy Dealer where the traffic would be better managed and the county employee’s not exposed to clouds of gas fumes. The county could unload the old kitchen and the house could be moved across the street for a nice clubhouse for the golf course. Gasoline is dangerous for your health because it’s toxic. Exposure to gasoline, either through physical contact or inhalation, can cause health problems. The effects of gasoline poisoning can harm every major organ. Adirondack Park bad for business
Editor’s note: This letter references Tim Rowland’s article “Not so bad for business,” which ran in the May 11 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: Adirondack Park Not Bad For Business. Bunk! After squashing jobs for decades. Driving out jobs for lower earning youth. High income second home and retirement transplants income as a measure of business activity ... more of the same lame fake news. Shame on The Sun for even publishing this garbage.

Vote yes on Ti budget
To the Editor: We are at a pivotal time for the children of the Ticonderoga Central School District. Our board of education has been very diligent in keeping
The AJ/NE Sun | May 18, 2019 • 5
taxes low while trying to maintain a quality education for our children. But despite yearly cuts to our programs and staff, we still find ourselves in a budget crisis this year. Unfortunately, we as a community are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Yes, the budget that we will be voting on will make cuts in programs that directly affect our students. Despite efforts to save programs, our foreign language students will have fewer choices than ever before. Many junior varsity sports will be discontinued. Retiring staff members will not be replaced. In addition, we as taxpayers face a difficult decision about whether to increase the tax levy. However, it is critical that this budget passes. If the budget
does not pass, the cuts to our school district will be devastating. Programs and classes that impact all of our students will be eliminated. These include, but are not limited to, programs for our youngest students, business classes, advanced placement classes and school-to-work options. All extra-curricular clubs and all athletics will be cut. Our community always has supported our school district and understands the value of a quality education. We have seen the benefits of challenging our students to do their best. It is time once again to show our children what is important to us. I urge you to vote yes on May 21. - Richard Smith, president of the Ticonderoga Teachers Association, Ticonderoga ■

HUNTING FOR A LOST TOURING CAR
In the case of William Langworthy, of Warrensburgh, against Roy J. Hosley, of Schroon Lake, in the Supreme Court at Lake George, a second trial in the case has been concluded. This was an action for personal injuries alleged to have been received as a result of negligence on the part of the defendant. The plaintiff alleges that while he was riding on the rear of a wagon, the defendant’s automobile struck the wagon and injured him. The defendant alleges that he stopped his car behind the wagon and that a large touring car coming up behind him struck his car and forced him into the rear part of the wagon. Although the touring car has never been found and no witness has been located to testify that they saw such a vehicle, the jury rendered a verdict of
A big, wrought-iron lock, 6 x 8 inches and weighing 6 pounds, is among the treasured possessions of Landlord Harry S. Downs, of the Chester House, in Chestertown. This is the original lock which for many years was used to lock up the hotel when the lights went out at night. No thief or burglar ever succeeded in passing the portal which it guarded. The Chester House was built more than 100 years ago and is presently undergoing major renovation by landlord Downs and his wife. The office and a portion of the present hotel were part of the original structure. The lock mentioned guarded the outer door and was long ago replaced by a lock of modern design. The door latch, however, is the original one, made of wrought-iron by a local blacksmith when the hotel was built. John L. Weatherhead, uncle of the present owner, was proprietor of the
Chester House 100 years ago. He went to Lake George to conduct the Central House and Marcus S. Downs purchased the hotel and successfully conducted it for many years and his son now succeeds him. (Note – The Chester house was famous through the North Country. It was located on the corner of Thieriot Avenue and Main Street. There is a gas station and store there now. Harry S. Downs, 88, a legend in his own time, died Jan. 23, 1950. I sincerely hope that the wrought-iron lock is safely tucked away in the Chestertown Museum. This museum is a wonderful place. I will never forget the time when, many years ago, I went there to see the unknown human skeleton laid out in a glass case there, which had been dug up during local road construction.)

Warrensburg Central School board again nixes SRO hiring
Proposal’s fate likely hinges on Tuesday’s election By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARRENSBURG | With the full Warrensburg school board casting votes on May 13, the panel rejected a proposed resolution to hire two armed police officers to be on duty daily in the educational district’s two public schools. A month earlier, the proposal failed to receive majority support from the board as it received only a tie vote. The vote of the Warrensburg school board was 4 to 3. Voting for the proposition were Diane Angell, Rob Frasier and Jonathan Boston. Doug West, Ash Anand, Elaine Cowin and Nicole
Winchell voted no. Hiring armed officers has been a controversial issue in recent months, as a meeting March 25 on school safety attracted about 50 residents, most of them in favor of hiring the officers. The forum was prompted by an online campaign to hire SROs. At the safety forum, Superintendent of Schools John Goralski described more than a dozen programs that the school is now employing to prevent violence and encourage empathy among students in the both the elementary and high school. He and other school board members also talked about the personnel the school have in place, including social workers, counselors and a psychiatrist, who assist troubled students, helping them manage their emotions. At the board’s recent meetings, several residents spoke in favor of hiring the armed officers, citing that doing so
would add an additional layer of protection against school violence. Others said having the SROs on duty was an unnecessary expense of $60,000 or more. During the March meeting, Warrensburg High School Principal Doug Duell — an administrator at the school for 18 years — said he supported hiring the SROs. But following the meeting, he said that violence was virtually nonexistent at the school. Whether SROs are on duty in the two schools next year, however, may change following the annual school election set for Tuesday, May 21, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Incumbent board member Elaine Cowin — who has voted against hiring the SROs — is being challenged by Darren Duell, Doug Duell’s brother. Darren Duell said at the meeting that he supports hiring the officers, according to reports. ■

POLICE BLOTTER
Man allegedly found with BAC four times legal limit
LAKE GEORGE | Warren County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a South Burlington, Vermont, man for allegedly driving while intoxicated. Aaron D. Dehm, 44, was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated May 11. Police responded to the area of state Route 9 in the Factory Outlets of Lake George after a motorist called in a complaint regarding the operation of a vehicle on state Route 149 in the Town of Queensbury. Police said an investigation found that Dehm had been consuming alcohol and he failed a standardized field sobriety test. He was placed under arrest for allegedly driving while intoxicated. Further investigation found that Dehm’s blood alcohol content was 0.35 percent, more than four times the legal limit, elevating the charge to aggravated driving while intoxicated. Dehm is due to appear at the Town of Queensbury Court on a later date. ■
Arrest made for alleged order of protection violation
INDIAN LAKE | A Wells man was arrested by New York State Police after allegedly violating an order of protection. Nathan D. Bassett, 25, was arrested May 11 after he allegedly violated an order of protection by texting and calling the victim at her residence in Indian Lake and threatening to harm her in the early morning hours of May 7. This was in violation of an order of protection issued to the victim May 3. Several attempts were made to locate Bassett, to no avail. A warrant of arrest was issued by Indian Lake Town Court for criminal contempt in the first degree and aggravated harassment in the second degree. Bassett later turned himself in and was arraigned in the Town of Indian Lake Court. He was released after posting $1,000 cash bail. ■

Elizabethtown Community Hospital receives Pathway To Excellence designation ECH one of four state hospitals to receive designation
town Community Hospital. “We’re so proud of this designation because it reflects our commitment to our nurses and to the work we’ve done together to create a culture where they feel valued, trusted and supported.” ANCC requires Pathway designated organizations to meet six Pathway standards essential to creating an ideal nursing workplace environment. The standards focus on shared decision-making, leadership, safety, quality, wellbeing and professional development. Research shows that a workplace environment that engages and inspires nurses has a direct positive impact on nurse satisfaction and retention, which enhances patient care and safety. To earn the designation, ECH completed a rigorous application process that included the submission of a 1,500page evidence-based document and the participation of at least 60 percent of the hospital’s nurses in a voluntary, confidential online survey. At the end of the survey, 70 percent of nurses validated that our organization met the Pathway to Excellence practice standards.
ELIZABETHTOWN | The University of Vermont Health Network — Elizabethtown Community Hospital has earned the Pathway to Excellence designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Elizabethtown Community Hospital is one of only four hospitals in New York state to receive the designation and one of only 169 to receive it internationally. The Pathway to Excellence program recognizes healthcare organizations that create work environments where nurses feel empowered and can flourish. The designation identifies Elizabethtown Community Hospital as one of the best places for nurses to work. “Our dedicated and skilled nurses are committed to giving our patients the highest quality of care,” said Julie Tromblee, MSN, vice president and chief nursing officer for Elizabeth-
Examples of ECH’s initiatives that have fostered a positive working environment include: • Professional growth opportunities including tuition assistance for advanced degrees and certifications and financial assistance for certification preparation courses; • Structured relaxation breaks and the creation of a mobile serenity cart with a yoga mat, relaxation music and foot and back massager; • Collaboration with frontline nursing staff on quality improvement plans, including a multifaceted fall prevention program. Tromblee noted that although the Pathway to Excellence designation is awarded by a nursing organization, it could not have been achieved without help from every department in the hospital. “The Pathway to Excellence designation is a tremendous honor, not only for our nursing staff, but for our entire team,” she said. “Our nurses couldn’t excel at their jobs without the trust and support of their colleagues across the organization.” ■

ICU patient who had made the selfless decision to become an organ donor. In nominating Holmes, the family wrote, “This nurse was so kind, caring, respectful, and considerate. They continued to care for Meghan and our entire family as we dealt with the terrible news of her brain death. They helped us honor her wishes to be an organ donor and stayed with her every step of the way.” Holmes made it possible for Meghan’s mother to fix her daughter’s hair one last time. “(It was) an unforgettable moment and such a caring act.” “Dignity” and “respect” were words used throughout the nomination letter to describe how Holmes interacted with the patient and her family. “She was kind and considerate to our wishes and always had respect and honor for Meghan. It was always apparent through their care that Meghan was top priority and her dignity was held to highest regards. We are all so incredibly grateful for this nurse’s support and care.” CVPH Chief Nursing Officer Carrie Howard Canning called Holmes an extraordinary nurse and said she was a “wonderful example” of the impact nurses have on patients and their families. “Kiesha made such a meaningful difference in this family’s last days with their loved one. That’s a tremendous gift.” Holmes, who has been part of the ICU team for two years, was honored at a surprise ceremony that included her colleagues, members of the CVPH executive team and members of Meghan’s family. As a tribute to Meghan’s gift, an honor walk held at CVPH and staff lined the hallway between the ICU and the operating room to honor the woman who saved three lives that day because of her decision to become an organ donor. As requested by Meghan’s family, a video was created to share her story, honor her and raise awareness about organ donation. The video can be viewed at youtube.com/watch?v=L8qYwdgtq_4&t=33s. Nomination forms and boxes for the DAISY awards are located at each of the hospital’s main entrances and online at UVMHealth.org/CVPHDaisy. Myler was the 2015 MVP in the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference, hitting .520 that season while driving in 34 RBI and hitting four home runs — only four home runs because she was avoided by many MVAC pitchers after her junior season, where she had hit a blistering .603 with 11 home runs and 36 RBI. In her sophomore campaign, she had 31 hits and eight home runs, driving in 27. She was named a first-team MVAC all-star her sophomore and junior seasons. Competition intense as postseason games eyed By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARREN COUNTY | As postseason play approached last week, teams in northern Warren County played some consequential games. Lake George played no less than six games between May 5 and May 11, winning five of them — but the one loss may have titlerelated consequences. The Warriors started off with a 10-0 win May 6 over North Warren, a 3-2 victory the next day over Fort Ann, then a heartbreaking 3-1 loss May 8 to Whitehall that took Lake George down one notch in Adirondack League competition. The league tournament, which will likely give Lake George a shot at the championship, is to be held Wednesday, May 15, and Friday, May 17.
Both the Warriors and the Railroaders are state-ranked — Lake George, coming into the game with an 8-0 league record, was considered No. 4 Class C team in the state as of May 7; and Whitehall, with a 7-0 league record at that time, was ranked No. 2 in Class D. This showdown between Lake George and Whitehall was followed May 9 by a Lake George victory over Corinth, after which the Warriors won both games May 11 in their invitational tournament: They defeated Ticonderoga, 13-0, and then hours later beat Galway, 21-6. Against North Warren, pitcher Rebecca Jaeger, who got four strikeouts, was assisted by closer Madeline Gorey, who had five Ks. Olivia Viele, on the mound for the Cougars, also earned five strikeouts. Offensive highlights for Lake George included a triple by Tyler Bergman, who scored two runs and had an RBI, and Gates’ two
runs and three RBIs. Memorable accomplishments for North Warren included hits by Jackie Urtz and Emma Phelps as well as singles by Lauren Monroe and Mattie Beadnell. In the game against Fort Ann, Lake George achieved three runs off three hits, while the Cardinals managed two runs off five hits. Highlights included a home run and two RBIs by Rachel Jaeger. The game against Whitehall was an epic defensive battle. The first run was scored by Whitehall in the fourth inning, matched by Lake George in the top of the sixth, then Whitehall responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Pitching for the Warriors was Bergman, who contained Whitehall to four hits while striking out 10. Top moments for the Warriors were Rachel Jaeger’s stolen base and her run.
The 2019 Lake George varsity softball team — headed toward the postseason with a 9-1 Adirondack League record and a 14-game tally overall — includes (front, left to right): senior Julia Heunemann, senior Casey Lynn Burbo, sophomore Alli Zilm, sophomore Megan Durkin, freshman Brooke Benjamin, freshman Olivia Gates; (rear) Assistant Coach Kim Zilm, Assistant Coach Bob Heunemann, senior Alysia Kane, junior Ava Pushor, senior Rebecca Jaeger, sophomore Rachel Jaeger, sophomore Tyler Bergman, sophomore Madeline Gorey, Head Coach Kyle Manny and scorekeeper Keith Putnam. The Warriors rebounded the next day in the 14-2 defeat of Corinth. Highlights for Lake George include pitcher Rebecca Jaeger’s four strikeouts as well as her double and three RBIs; Bergman’s two doubles, five RBIs, and four runs; Rachel Jaeger’s four runs, Ava Pushor’s three singles, two RBIs and six putouts; and Olivia Gates’ three runs. Against Ticonderoga in the invitational semifinals, pitcher Rebecca Jaeger had five strikeouts, hit two triples, earned three RBIs and scored a run. Bergman hit two doubles and scored three runs. Rachel Jaeger hit a triple, scored two runs and tallied three RBIs during her 3-for-3 performance at the plate; Alli Zilm was 2-for-3, scored a run and earned an RBI; and Madeline Gorey was 1-for-2, scoring two runs and an RBI. In the Galway game in which the Warriors won their tournament’s trophy, Bergman notched 14 strikeouts as well as hitting a triple. Offense also featured Alysia Kane hitting two doubles, scoring three runs and tallying two RBIs; Pushor scoring two runs and earning two RBIs; Brooke Benjamin going 3-for-3 at bat and getting two RBIs; and Casey Lynn Burbo scoring two runs. North Warren rallied May 9 to defeat Warrensburg, 11-5, with Viele on the mound achieving four strikeouts for the Cougars as well as tallying three RBIs. For the Burghers, Dianne Curtis was 3-for-4 at the plate, hitting a double and scoring three RBIs. A day earlier, North Warren held their Coaches for Cancer Game and lost to Fort Ann, 6-1. Highlights for the Cougars were Viele’s two strikeouts, Jodi Bartlett and Eliza Brown both going 2-for-3, and the latter hitting a double and one RBI. The peak of Warrensburg’s week was their 16-0 defeat of Hadley Luzerne May 6, a game that was halted after the fifth inning. Warrensburg’s offense was on fire in this Adirondack League game. Megan Hughes hit three triples while pitcher Mikayla Rothermel and Sydney Gerrain hit one triple each. Hitting one double each were Bella DeAmelia, Sara Langworthy, Dianne Curtis and Kaylee Olden. Langworthy went 4-for-5 while hitting two RBIs; Hughes was 3-for-4 and hit four RBIs; Curtis was 3-for-4 and hit three RBIs; Rothermel was 2-for-3 and hit two RBIs; and Gerrain was 2-for-3 and tallied two RBIs. ■
Burghers, Warriors capture key wins in baseball By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARRENSBURG | Warrensburg High School sports teams have a longstanding reputation of starting out their seasons with more than their share of losses, but achieving solid gains through the ensuing months. The 2019 baseball team is no exception: as they headed toward the end of their season this week, they racked up several hard-fought victories. On May 11, the Burghers beat Chazy, 4-2, with Bill Cameron on the mound, achieving five strikeouts over his four innings pitching. Chazy scored a run in the first inning, which featured a triple-play by the Burghers that

extricated them from a bases-loaded quandry. Warrensburg kept up the momentum one stanza later with their own offensive thrust, scoring three runs. Peyton Olden pitched three innings quelling Chazy’s offense while earning three strikeouts, and was credited with the save. Getting one hit each were Evan MacDuff, Mac Baker, Dan Kelly and Chris Wilson while Baker tallied two RBIs. Travis Passage also provided an RBI. On May 9, Warrensburg defeated North Warren, 14-2, with MacDuff getting six strikeouts over his four innings pitched. The win boosted his season record to 4-1. For the Cougars, Joe Phelps was on the mound. Warrensburg piled on the runs early, and the game ended after the fifth inning. Highlights for Warrensburg included MacDuff tally-

» Baseball Cont. from pg. 8 Two days prior, Bolton-Schroon Lake defeated Warrensburg, 6-5, in a nonleague game. Top achievements for the Burghers were one double each by MacDuff and Kelly; as well as Griffin, Wilson, Carpenter, Cameron and MacDuff stealing bases. On May 6, Warrensburg players had a last-inning comeback surge that fell short as they lost to Hadley-Luzerne, 7-3. HadleyLuzerne’s four runs in the second inning gave them a comfortable margin from which Warrensburg wasn’t able to recover. Eagles pitcher Jon Coppola, who tallied six strikeouts over six innings, was backed up by strong defense to win the game. Productive on offense for Hadley-Luzerne were Zack Lewandowski, Tanner DeMarsh, Joe Cieslik and Zack Caldwell. Highlights for Warrensburg include Wilson going 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and scoring two runs; and MacDuff tallying 2-for-3 scoring two runs. Besides North Warren’s loss to Warrensburg last week, they also had stiff competition from Fort Ann and Lake George. On May 10, they were defeated by the Cardinals, 7-3; their standout moments were Tanner Dunkley and Conner Monroe each hitting an RBI single. Four days earlier, Lake George pitcher Michael Johnson threw a no-hitter, throwing seven strikeouts over five innings, shutting out North Warren, 11-0. Highlights for the Warriors were Nick Taylor’s double in his 2-for-2 showing; Sean Butkowski’s double; Jack Mellon and Mason Flatley each hitting two RBIs; and Carter Vidnansky tallying 2-for-3 and earning an RBI. On May 10, Lake George defeated Corinth, 7-4, for a key Adirondack League win. Again, Johnson was on the mound, curbing the opposing batters’ offense. Two days prior, Lake George struggled against Whitehall, which remained unbeaten for 2019 at 11-0 as of May 13 and is headed toward the Adirondack League championship. Railroaders pitcher Thomas Fish curbed the Warriors’ offense for
a 12-2 win. The bright spot of the day for the Warriors was Connor Vidnansky’s double and Butkowski’s RBI. On May 7, Lake George defeated Fort Ann, 9-5, in a competitive showdown. Warrior pitcher Nick Taylor was effective on both defense and offense, as he went 2-for-4 at the plate and had two RBIs, while Scottie Austin mirrored his tally. ■
