Lake George officials eye site for foreign worker housing Vacant former resort hotel part of proposed plans By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | The sprawling abandoned hillside building off Northway Exit 21 that was once the Lake View Hotel & Conference Center — and decades earlier the Lake George Ramada Inn — may be full of life in a year or two, if tentative plans become reality. Lake George town officials revealed this week they have proposed to the present property owner Joseph Gross that the vacant building be rehabilitated and developed into housing for foreign workers — for at least several years while the property is awaiting sale or redevelopment. For decades, Lake George Village has annually hosted up to 1,000 or more foreign students who take on seasonal hospitality jobs, and these workers are vital in keeping Lake George’s hospitality businesses thriving. But providing adequate housing for the workers has been a problem, as they have incurred such issues as room overcrowding, unsafe or unhealthy conditions, exorbitant rents and rental deposits being retained without cause.

citizens gathered May 27 for Warrensburg’s annual Memorial Day ceremony. After he and others praised the soldiers and sailors who sacrificed their lives for the nation, he turned attention to those gathered to pay their respects. “Everywhere I go in this town, young people come up to me and say ‘Thank you for your service,’” said Pierce, who grew up in New York City. “Your children are the most respectful youngsters I’ve met anywhere, and that’s a reflec-
tion on the local parents.” But Pierce also had some advice for the young folks in the crowd — he urged them to listen to the stories of their elders. “Youngsters, if an older veteran wants to talk, don’t roll your eyes and say ‘Oh Grandpa, I’ve heard this story before’ — instead, listen to what they have to say, because once they pass on, their stories are gone.” » Memorial Day Cont. on pg. 5
‘Free store’ coming to Lake George landfill For exchange of wares By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | Residents of the Town of Lake George will have a new aspect to their mundane visits to the town transfer station — treasure hunting. Lake George Town Board member Marisa Muratori — known for embracing environmental awareness and social responsibility — is establishing a self-serve “free store” at the town transfer station. The concept was endorsed by the Lake George town board at their May 13 meeting. Muatori has located a quaint shingle-roof shed —
Among the law enforcement officers participating in the May 24 media event on the southwest shore of Lake George promoting sober boating are (left to right): Warren County Undersheriff Shawn Lamouree; county Patrol Officer Gregory Dunn; Joe Johns, Law Enforcement Director of the Lake George Park Commission; and Angelo Paccione, sergeant at the latter agency. complete with flower boxes and decorative doors — that she’s soon having moved to the transfer station where people can drop off quality items of value that they no longer need, for others to adopt and take home. Muratori said this “Free Store” will be similar to the Chester Reuse Center, for decades a popular destination in northern Warren County. This indoor facility, operated by the Town of Chester next to its transfer station and recycling center, has for many years hosted all sorts of gently used or new household goods, furniture, toys, small and large home appliances, sporting goods and some tools. Most all the items are sorted and arranged on shelves, and clothing — both for children and adults — is neatly hung on racks.

Campaign for sober boating launched LAKE GEORGE | With the summer tourism season now underway, area law enforcement officials are urging boaters to not pilot their watercraft after they have consumed alcoholic beverages. Four area sheriff ’s departments, the Lake George Park Commission police, a beverage distributer and a law practice are working together in an effort called “Operation Sober Boater” to promote safety on area waterways.

On May 24, representatives of the Warren, Fulton, Albany and Saratoga counties’ sheriff ’s departments hosted a media event on the shore of Lake George to kick off the initiative for 2019. Warren County Undersheriff Shawn Lamouree said personnel of the four agencies will be circulating to area taverns and restaurants soon distributing posters, flyers and various giveaways — keychains, posters, sunglasses and beverage insulators known as “koozies” — all emblazened with the message of sober boating. “We’re getting the word out that law enforcement in the

» Free store Cont. from pg. 1 Muratori said Monday that Lake George’s reuse center will start out on a more modest level, as the shed measures about 10 feet by 10 feet. She estimated that the shed will be spruced up, re-situated at the transfer station and ready for donated items within four to six weeks. “I love the idea of communities promoting reuse of material goods,” she said, noting that there’s a growing awareness in society of the excess items that people collect — and a new enthusiasm of giving away items for reuse by others. “A lot of people have things they might have received as a present — and they’ve never even taken them out of their original boxes,” she said. “And many people are too busy to take the time to sell the items on Craigslist.”
She said that rules are to be established about what will be accepted for Lake George’s Free Store and what can’t be dropped off, and it will have to be monitored. She said that giving things away to others is now trending with the millennial generation. “If you don’t use something, someone else might enjoy it, and giving it to someone else gives you a good feeling — rather than just chucking it into the garbage.” ■ This shed, obtained by the Town of Lake George when they acquired the James Corkland property, is to be spruced up and repurposed into a “Free Store.” To be situated at the town transfer station, the shed is to host donated quality household goods, home furnishings and small appliances, tools and clothing for others to pick up and take home at no charge. Harley test rides to debut at annual Warrensburg Bike Rally By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARRENSBURG | The Warrensburg Bike Rally, scheduled to hold its 19th-annual edition from Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 9, has reached a big milestone this year. After gaining a 19 percent increase in attendance in 2018, they’ve attracted Harley-Davidson as a sponsor — and the legendary firm will be showing off their new models and offering test rides, according to event organizer Ed Zibro. Also participating this year will be Geico Insurance, whose representatives will be writing insurance policies on site, Zibro said. In addition to these new attractions, the rally is to host a beer concession at their food court — the rally’s first venture in offering alcoholic beverages.

Motorcyclists attending a recent year’s edition of the Warrensburg Bike Rally browse among a wide array of motorcycle equipment and accessories presented at the show and sale. The rally returns to the Warren County Fairgrounds this weekend for a 10-day run from May 31 through Sunday, June 9. Photo by Thom Randall “Were very pleased to have these three national sponsors — Harley-Davidson, Budweiser and Geico,” Zibro said. “We’ve got much more going on this year.” The rally, a 10-day outdoor show and sale of motorcycling equipment and accessories, is open from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily at the Warren County Fairgrounds on Schroon River Road a mile and a half northeast of the Warrensburg hamlet. The rally has no entry fee. Harley-Davidson will on site Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 2. In addition to hosting nearly double the number of vendors, the rally is to host an expanded range of entertainment. Elvis tribute artist Joe Ramsey will be performing Monday, June 3, through Saturday, June 8 — plus several regional bands will likely be performing. Joining them will be a tattoo artist known as The Purple Pirate with his comedy routines, scheduled for 5 p.m. daily. Catering to motorcyclists attracted to the region for worldfamous Americade, the rally features motorcycle accessories, equipment and services, including bike trailers, threewheeler conversions and pinstriping, plus biker clothing, leather goods, hats, helmets, crafts, jewelry and eyewear. Some vendors will be servicing motorcycles and conducting equipment installations on site. ■

» Sober boating Cont. from pg. 1 Observing how intoxicated boating can have tragic consequences, he referred to the 2016 incident in which 8-yearold Charlotte McCue was killed. Charlotte was asleep in her mother’s lap on a leisurely evening cruise riding in her grandfather’s classic wooden boat when a speedboat piloted by Alexander West — who had been drinking and taking illegal drugs — careened up and over the McCue family’s watercraft. » Worker housing Cont. from pg. 1 Several resort communities elsewhere in the U.S. address such shortages of adequate housing by providing dormitory buildings for foreign workers — and the former resort hotel property, if adequately renovated, could serve such a purpose, according to town officials. Weeks ago, town and village officials met with Gross and his lawyer John Lapper to propose the concept. Just recently, the town sent a letter to Gross formalizing the proposal. Town and village Director of Planning Dan Barusch said Monday that the former resort hotel could accommodate up to about 400 workers in its 100-or-so rooms. He added that as a housing complex, it could feature a cafeteria, activity rooms and a cafeteria — and on-site management and security could be provided. Such a transformation could cost $500,000 to $1 million, but the cost of such an investment could be recouped within five years or so through rental revenue, town officials said. “The property is a phenomenal asset, and it’s just sitting there,” Lake George Town

“We’re seeking to prevent anything like that from ever happening again,” Lamouree said. West was convicted of second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, plus five other charges relating to the incident. He was sentenced to five to 15 years in state prison. Last year, on Lake George alone there were 13 boating while intoxicated arrests, Lt. Joe Johns of the Lake George Park Commission said at the press conference. There were also additional incidents in which intoxicated boaters died
or were severely injured. Lamouree said that the Warren County Sheriff’s Department has at least one patrol boat on the lake every summer day — and that his agency partners with the Lake George Park Commission to provide law enforcement coverage for three evenings per week. Co-sponsoring the sober-boating initiative are beverage distributor Saratoga Eagle, Bud Light and the Bartlett, Pontiff Stewart & Rhodes Law office based in Glens Falls. ■
Supervisor Dennis Dickinson said at the May 13 town meeting. “This is a great idea,” responded town board member Vinnie Crocitto. Worth millions of dollars in its prime, the foreclosed hotel property was sold to Gross for $475,000 in 2015. Sitting vacant for many years, the building has been repeatedly vandalized and has incurred interior water damage. In the past three weeks, more than a half-dozen people have been arrested on charges of trespassing on the property. In the past half-dozen years, town leaders and area economic development officials have tried to market the property as a site for a destination outdoor retail store like Cabela’s Outfitters or Bass Pro Shops. ■ The former Lake George Ramada Inn, its entrance depicted in this 2013 photograph, is now under consideration for rehabilitation into a housing complex for hundreds of foreign workers who annually take seasonal hospitality jobs in Lake George. » Memorial Day Cont. from pg. 1 Pierce also noted that members of the legion and VFW veterans organizations, with the help of local scouting troops, were decorating 1,300 graves of area military personnel in various local cemeteries. “We’re making sure we are honoring every veteran of Warrensburg and Thurman,” he said, adding that this June is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, and a local ceremony marking the date might be held. American Legion chaplain Mark Semon read the names of the local veterans who died between November 2017 and Veterans Day 2018: John Cunningham Jr., Walter Eichler, Roger J. Murry Jr., William A. Morehouse, Robert E. Butler, Wesley E. Webster, Thomas Lloyd, John “Jack” Arehart, Norman C. Benoit, Roland Haskell, Rachel French McGrath, Stephen McNeill, Donald H. Block Sr., David Degan, Thomas A. Conner, Melvin B. Levine, Charles Webster, Carson E. Parker, Walter E. Cole, Vincent A. Frisbie and Richard A. Ovitt. The local legion and VFW’s honor guards conducted a rifle-firing salute, then Warrensburg High School sophomore Joe Nissen played taps on his trumpet. The ceremony began with Semon giving an invocation. “We stand together in honoring our soldiers and sailors — true American patriots — who answered the nation’s call for help when it was needed,” he said. Warrensburg High School student Grace Cupp sang the national anthem, accompanied by the school’s marching band. Two local residents read classic patriotic essays: young veteran Megan Pierce recited “Flander’s Field” and Bonni Roth read “America’s Answer.”

During the Warrensburg Memorial Day Ceremony May 27, members of the Warrensburg American Legion Post 446 watch as a member of their group places a wreath at the base of a monument honoring local citizens who died in combat. Photo by Thom Randall VFW commander Phil Baker read a roll call of the local military personnel who died serving in the nation’s wars and conflicts since World War I. A parade preceded the service. It featured vintage military vehicles, including a 12-feet-tall
tank recovery vehicle, a 1945 high speed track vehicle, and a 50-millimeter Howitzer cannon. They all had been transported from Rockland County days earlier on seven tractor trailers. Concluding the ceremony, the people in the crowd held hands and sang “God Bless America.”

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
Hatred leads us nowhere
I was taught as a young child that hatred is an emotional cancer that ultimately leads to nothing but regrettable By Dan Alexander actions and generally • PUBLISHER • has a way of circling back around to unintended consequences. When our actions are driven by hate, we fail to see how they affect so many others. So when New York lawmakers gave final passage to legislation that would allow President Trump’s state tax returns to be released to congressional committees, it got me to questioning if their hatred for the president overrides their concerns for constituents? How much time and money has already been spent trying to find a way to derail the current administration instead of doing the jobs our elected officials were sent to Albany and Washington to do? It’s bad enough that Washington is fixated on destroying the Trump presidency, does Albany now need to make it a priority also? Has heavy-handed political competition turned the halls of government, designed to serve the people, into an opportunistic weapon upon political rivals? While polls show the majority of the nation is ready to move on from the search for the impeachment grail, it’s clear the fight is far from over. Government behavior has become so irrational in recent years it’s easy to be paranoid over what comes next. Case in point, after receiving my 2019 property assessments, I was shocked to see my home value increased 11 percent and office value jumped by 24 percent. While awaiting an opportunity to speak with the assessor, I learned from other property owners how their properties have also been subject to abnormally large increases. While questioning the assessor on how properties could take such a sharp leap when the communities are shrinking and median sale prices are down by nearly 60 percent, he explained it was natural for values to rise according to the formula provided by the state. That’s when my paranoia set in as I began to question if the “Get Trump Syndrome” had played a role in New York state property values? It’s not often that the government doesn’t desire more money to spend, but they don’t like to be blamed for raising taxes. What if they can blame the increased taxes on our property values and use that new staggering figure to heap more blame on Mr. Trump’s tax breaks for removing our ability to deduct those property taxes from our federal returns, thus making it all Mr. Trump’s fault? If so, are we now mere pawns in this ongoing strategic political game? ■

Mueller investigation complete — let’s look to preventing Russian interference in election vertisements. The American electoral process is the envy of the world, and Congress must do everything in our power to ensure that does not change. Here is what I am doing to protect our democracy along with my colleagues in the House: We know that Vladimir Putin is at the helm of nefarious activities targeting the U.S. in Russia. Earlier this Congress, I introduced the bipartisan Vladimir Putin Transparency Act, which instructs U.S. intelligence agencies to collect and submit a report to Congress on Putin and his associates’ financial assets and secretive networks that seek to weaken democracies by consolidating political control through unethical means. Voters and the entire American public have the right to know if a candidate or their campaign is intentionally or unwittingly engaged with foreign influence at any point during the election. Just over two months ago, this bill successfully passed the House with strong bipartisan support. Today’s elected officials and candidates have an incredible technological advantage with the ability to reach their voters through social media and digital advertising. However, these tools can also be vulnerable to the influence of malign actors who propagate misinformation, create false news stories and run influential ad campaigns. That is why I introduced both the Honest Ads Act and PAID AD Act, which enhance the integrity and transparency of American democracy and national security by requiring the source of funding be disclosed for online political advertisements and prohibiting foreign entities from par-
Now that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation is complete and his report has been released to ConBy Elise Stefanik gress and the American • GUEST COLUMNIST • public, policy makers on both sides of the aisle have an opportunity to come together and take actionable steps to combat Russian interference. I have continued my record of fighting for the resiliency, security and transparency of our electoral system by introducing four bipartisan pieces of legislation to combat Russian meddling in just the last four months. Here is where we are: The Mueller investigation produced findings consistent with the conclusions of the House Permanent Special Committee on Intelligence’s extensive, bipartisan Congressional investigation. The report outlined Russia’s systematic approach to targeting our elections, not only through Facebook ads and fake Twitter accounts, but through a sophisticated hacking operation targeting committees, candidates and campaigns. After months of scrupulous inquiry, it is imperative Congress takes its findings seriously: Russia interfered in our elections with the intent to undermine the democratic process. My colleagues and I continue to work to counter and prevent Russian and other adversarial actions. I have been an ardent supporter of transparency — transparency about elected offi cials, transparency in foreign financial ties and transparency in political ad-

ticipating in certain election activities. Last month, with the support of my colleagues, I authored the Counterintelligence Accountability Act, which directs the FBI to notify Congress when a candidate for federal office, a political campaign or an individual known to be associated with the campaign is being investigated. I decided to do this after my questioning of then-FBI Director James Comey at a House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence hearing last Congress, where he revealed that he did not follow the proper protocol of notifying Congress about opening a counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign in 2016. This loophole in the law allows the FBI to circumvent Congress and unilaterally conduct investigations without any congressional oversight. My bill will ensure that the right congressional overseers are informed of sensitive counterintelligence investigations into campaigns for federal office. I’m proud that every Republican on the House Intelligence Committee is a co-sponsor of this bill. Additionally, I’ve been a longtime leader in cybersecurity policy and avidly encouraged cybersecurity operations focused on elections to consider the entire campaign process, not a single election day. I co-authored the Defend Against Russian Disinformation and Aggression Act to improve cooperation between the U.S. and NATO allies and partners in cyber-countermeasures linked to Russian government corruption. I was an original co-sponsor to the bill that increases Congressional oversight over military cyber-operations. » Stefanik Cont. on pg. 7

The New York State Outdoor Writers held their spring rendezvous in Schroon Lake recently. We were given a warm reception from the Chamber of Commerce, and the key to the city as they say. By Richard Redman Outdoor writers from around the • COLUMNIST • state came to Schroon Lake to see what we have to offer. Charles and Theresa Witek came from Long Island, while others like George Franke, Stephan and Jessica George, Deb and John Brosen, Glenn Sapir, Leo Maloney, Steve Zahurak, Dave Figura, Ed Noonan and Mike Joyner attended from various parts of the state. Special thanks go to Dan Ladd for getting this event off the ground and running. The out-of-towners for this event stayed at Rowe’s Lake Breeze Cabin’s on Route 9. The cabin rooms are old style U.S. Route 9 Adirondack road trip cabins. Not fancy like a Lake Placid hotel but better, locally owned and very comfortable. The cabins are very nostalgic. My thoughts went to old convertibles and station wagons with kids sitting in the rear or laying on the back deck over the spare tire. They rode the roads before the Northway was built. Route 9 needs an historic resurgence like Route 66. Being a local, I drove the long and winding road back and forth to Moriah. I did a meet and greet, shook hands with some great new friends and chatted awhile. After we met, the group of hungry writers did a wing crawl at some local restaurants for a best in class chicken wing contest. All were winners! The following morning, it rained of course, and a few guys went out turkey hunting, but things were slow. They did hear birds but no 12-gauge action. Later that day, we met at the new Frontier Town Horse camping grounds in North Hudson, where Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) staff gave us a premier viewing of the facility. What they
» Stefanik Cont. from pg. 6 Finally, I co-sponsored the Promoting Good Cyber Hygiene Act of 2017, which requires the National Institute of Standards and Technology to establish best practices to defend against common cybersecurity threats and risks and requires the Department of Homeland Security to assess cybersecurity threats and provide recommendations for addressing threats. I have consistently called for bipartisan action to interdict foreign influence, specifically Russia. We must continue to ensure the United States uses a whole of government approach to counter Russian disinformation to protect the integrity of the United States’ electoral process. I am proud to lead the way with the support of so many of my colleagues in combating Russia’s and any other foreign threats to our democracy. ■ - Elise Stefanik is the congresswoman for New York’s 21st District.
have built over the last year is very impressive. There are campsites and fishing access sites for the disabled, sites for horse trailers and campers and trails throughout and nearby to ride on. There is even a stairway for horses to walk up to get to trails. The site can hold 60 horses. As an old United States Department of Agriculture conservation guy, I had to ask what they were going to do with all the horse manure. They have manure stack pads with wooden walls so the manure can be stacked and stored until it is composted and used on the grounds or is given away to gardeners. The campground and soon-to-open Paradox Brewery should be a big plus for the area. I wonder if they will install a hitching post at the bar. Just up the road a few long miles from Rowe cabins, Ed Noonan did get a gobbler the following morning, a good start to the day. We weren’t skunked. I had the pleasure of taking Leo Maloney out to try some spin fishing at a local pond and cruising around to see some local sites. The fishing was slow, but we had a great talk about life! Having a coffee along the morning shoreline and talking to a friend while fishing is a great thing. Our last stop was at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park and Resort on the Blue Ridge Road in North Hudson, where we were given the grand tour.
One hundred years ago — May 1919 By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST
THE BITTER END OF WINTER
When the ice went out of the Schroon River on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 26 and 27, 1919, it took with it six of 10 new piers and three old ones belonging to the Schroon River Pulp and Paper Company in Burnhamville, besides a long string of boon poles which are used in holding back the logs in the spring log drive. It is feared that many hundreds of logs would be lost as the high water floated those that were banked in this vicinity, but the damage was not as bad as was feared. (Note – It is hard to imagine logs jamming the Schroon River along River Street as was a common sight those many years ago.)
GENTLEMAN CRIES FOUL
An aged Boltonite, Franklin Terrell, of Bolton Landing, long past the “aught to know better” age, admits that he is an “easy mark.” He claims that he has been victimized by Mrs. Leroy Johnson of Glens Falls who, posing as Miss Bertha Green, won his love and trust and secured $200 of his money and a diamond ring. He isn’t willing to pay that much for experience and wants his property back. Mr. Terrell appeared before Judge Calhoun S.

Enches in the Glens Falls City Court and sought to have a warrant issued for the arrest of Mrs. Johnson who resides on Pearl Street in Glens Falls. Mr. Terrell alleges that the woman got his money and ring by representing herself as a single woman and encouraging his advances. The aged lothario said both she and her husband made threats against him with the intent of extorting his money. The woman surrendered the diamond ring but denied that he ever gave her $200. The district attorney is investigating the matter which has garnered much attention locally.
NEW BRIDGE PROMISED
Warrensburgh Sen. James Emerson’s bill providing for the payment by the state of 50 percent of the cost of constructing a new bridge across the Hudson River at Riverside was passed by the Senate on Monday, April 1, 1919. The bridge is located near the Riverside Station and connects the towns of Johnsburgh and Chestertown, forming a very important link at the entrance of the Adirondacks.
STONY CREEK LIBRARY CELEBRATES
The free public library at Stony Creek, established two years ago, through the efforts of Miss Florence J. Ashley, of Troy, a summer visitor, has become a flourishing institution. William Frear, of Troy, has sent along a very beautiful book of his five weeks of travel in 1889 in Europe.

Jellystone Park is a great campground for kids. It’s a child’s wonderland. They have tent and camper sites, cabins and yurts to stay in and they cater to making sure the kids are happy. They show movies, have playgrounds, arcades and a giant jumping bag the kids can bounce around on. The hospitality and the campground are great. After the long day, the group returned to Rowe’s for a potluck wild game dinner. Thank you to the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce, Rowe’s Cabins, DEC staff and Jellystone Park for providing the New York State Outdoor Writers a grand time and a living easy lifestyle for the weekend. I know the guys will all put some ink on wood and tell the tale of a great place to visit. ■ - Rich Redman is a Moriah-based outdoors writer. He can be reached at rangeric@nycap.rr.com.

OLD HOTEL, NEW PROPRIETOR
The Maple Grove Hotel, formerly The Trimble, on lower Main Street, Warrensburgh, was opened May 29, 1919 as a temperance (no alcohol) hotel by the new proprietor W.H. Kelley. He has announced that it will be open year-round to receive boarders and transients. The house is now being repainted. (Note – This hotel was located on Main Street across from the Judd Bridge. Originally it was called the Riverside Hotel and proprietor Powell Brace was shot and killed by a drunk bar patron there in 1902. Stephen Waters purchased it in 1905 and renamed it the Trimble Hotel. He built a bowling alley in part of the hotel. Waters sold it in 1909 and later it was called the Bolton Hotel, Kelly’s Inn and when it burned in 1926 it was known as the Ah-kum-on Inn. All this history is due to the research of my good friends, dedicated historians Steve Parisi and John Hastings.) ■ - Readers are welcome to contact Sun columnist Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518-623-2210.

Americade returns to Lake George p.m. Saturday, June 8, the party features nine rock bands
By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | Tens of thousands of two-wheeled enthusiasts will be rolling into Lake George Village this week as Americade — the nation’s premier touring motorcycle rally — returns in its 37th edition with new attractions and features. The village will undoubtedly be a spectacle of gleaming chrome as Americade engulfs Lake George Village from Monday, June 3, through Saturday, June 8. The relocation of its weekend-long Block Party and Music Festival to its new site on Beach Road adjacent to the lake is the most notable of the changes. The move means the popular Block Party will be closer to Tour Expo, the world’s most extensive largest exposition of touring motorcycle equipment and accessories. Tour Expo is centered in the village’s Festival Commons and its adjacent properties. To be held from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 7, and 1 to 10 Motorcyclists pause for pedestrians crossing Canada Street in Lake George during Americade several years ago. This year’s edition of the world-renowned touring motorcycle rally, set for Monday, June 3, through Saturday, June 8, features demonstration rides, group tours through the Adirondacks, a block party and music festival, comedy shows, seminars, various motorcycle competitions, parades and fireworks, as well as TourExpo, the world’s largest show and sale of two-wheeled touring gear. BOLTON LANDING | Bolton-Schroon Lake is the sole remaining baseball team representing northern Warren County that as of Memorial Day had survived in sectional play. Bolton-Schroon Lake was scheduled to play Crown Point in a Section VII Class D tournament semifinal game at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, on a ballfield at Bolton Central School. The winners of the two Class D semifinal matches are to compete in the championship game to be held 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at Chip Cummings Field on the campus of SUNY Plattsburgh. Lake George, which had a talented lineup for 2019, was defeated May 25 by Chatham, 19-3, in a Section II Class C quarterfinal. Chatham’s Kaleb Taylor was on fire in the showdown. He hit a home run, a double and single as well as driving in four runs for his team. Taylor also pitched for the Panthers, striking out six Lake George batters. For Lake George, Cole Clark had a double, a single and an RBI; Michael Johnson hit a double and an RBI; and Connor Vidnansky hit two singles. The game was halted after five innings because of the run rule. Chatham, Hoosick

Falls, Greenwich and Fort Plain are still alive in Class C action. Johnson, Riley Orr and Sean Butkowski pitched for Lake George against Chatham, which was ranked No. 9 in the state as of May 15, the last time a poll was taken. The Warriors had a far more favorable experience in the opening round of the Section II Class C tourney. On their home ballfield May 22, Lake George, seeded No. 8, defeated No. 9 Schoharie by a score of 3-1. With the game tied, senior Mason Flatley hit a double, scoring a run. Scottie Austin hit an RBI in the sixth and Lake

George added another run later on. Austin was credited with a double. In Section II Class D, North Warren was a contender. They were knocked out of the opening round by Fort Ann — the score was 7-5 in the May 22 game between Adirondack League rivals. North Warren got a string of midgame hits that kept them in contention until the game’s conclusion. Jay Hopper pitched for the Cougars. The highlight of the game was Riley May’s two doubles and one run, Jay Hopper’s RBI and a run, Wyatt Gereau going 2-for-4 at the plate and hitting an RBI, and Tom Conway going 2-for-4 and slugging a hit that scored a run. ■

onstage, craft beers on tap, NFL stars signing autographs and motorcycle stunt shows nearby. Although the Block Party requires no admission charge for registered Americade attendees, it will be raising money for the Ronald McDonald House charity. Expected to attract about 30,000 motorcyclists, Americade’s six-day run is packed with two-wheeled tours through the mountains, competitions, comedy shows, seminars and social events complete with tale-swapping by seasoned riders. Americade is Warren County’s single largest event, responsible for up to $30 million in economic activity annually. One primary attraction of Americade has been the participation of an array of motorcycle manufacturers offering demo rides and displays, as well as sharing shop talk with factory experts. Scheduled to participate are such manufacturers as BMW, Ducati, Honda, Indian, Moto Guzzi, KTM, Triumph, Motortrike, Roadsmith and Thoroughbred Motorsports. Another leading attraction of Americade is its vintage motorcycle garage, a display of classic motorcycles from the 1920s through the 1970s, which will be open Tuesday through Saturday at TourExpo. Lake George expected to advance in Section II play Cougars, Jaguars, Eagles all competing in regional tournaments By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | Riding into sectional play with a 16-3 season win-loss tally, Lake George’s initial playoff game was to be held Tuesday, May 28, against Hoosick Falls. The Warriors were able to skip the opening round of the Section II tournament because of their No. 2 seeding in Section II Class C. Hoosick Falls, seeded No. 7, defeated No. 10 Galway May 24 by a score of 1-0. Hoosick Falls pitcher Abby Phillpott struck out six of the first nine Galway batters, and allowed no hits during the first three innings. Their winning run was the result of an RBI single by Ashley Pacheco, and a strong defensive effort in the last two innings secured the Panthers’ slim margin, allowing them to advance in the tourney. Lake George is expected to do quite well in the tournament, as they’ve had productive offense and a stingy defense all year long. Their two top pitchers, five-year starter Rebecca Jaeger, a senior, and Tyler Bergmann, a sophomore,
have proven that they can take on any competitor. Both are also offensive threats. Among the Class C teams, Chatham and Greenwich, ranked No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, will be giving Lake George the most formidable competition. The North Warren Cougars are the sole team from northern Warren County competing in Section II Class D. Seeded No. 7 in the division, they were scheduled as to play Salem, seeded No. 2, in the quarterfinals Tuesday, May 28, on the Generals’ field. Whitehall, undefeated for 2019 and ranked No. 2 in the state, is the leader in Section II Class D. They will likely meet up with Fort Ann, seeded No. 3 in the tourney, but ranked No. 4 in the state for Class D. Fort Ann has a history of dominating the Section II Class D — they won eight straight sectional championships between 2011 and 2018. The Class C and Class D tournament semifinals are scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at Moreau recreational park. The tournament championship finals are set for Tuesday, June 4, at the same site — 4 p.m. for Class C and 5 p.m. for Class D. For Section VII, No. 4-seeded Johnsburg was scheduled to play Wells, ranked No. 5, Tuesday, May 28, on the Jaguars’ field at 4:30 p.m. The winner of this quarterfinals match was to take on No. 1-seeded Wells at 4:30 p.m. Thursday,
Lake George pitcher Rebecca Jaeger takes a swing in a May 23 scrimmage against Whitehall. The game was held to keep both teams sharp for their upcoming competition — the Warriors in Class C, and the Railroaders in Class D. Photo by Thom Randall
May 30, at Crown Point. Meanwhile, No. 2 ranked Bolton-Schroon Lake will be playing No. 3 ranked Elizabethtown-Westport in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. May 30 at Bolton High. While Lake George prepared for their Section II Class C competition by playing Whitehall in a scrimmage May 23, Johnsburg and North Warren played a game the prior day to stay sharp for their respective Class D tournament competitions. This game was decided in the last several
plays. It ended with Johnsburg edging out North Warren, 9-8. Pitching for the Jaguars was Mallory Pierson who had two strikeouts, while Olivia Viele of North Warren had 10. Both were active on offense as well — each of them hit two doubles. Pierson was 4-for-4 at the plate; Viele was 3-for-5 and had two RBIs. Also hitting a double for Johnsburg were Charlize Bernard and Khaleah Cleveland. For North Warren, Mattelyn Beadnell slugged two doubles and Jodi Bartlett hit one. Also, Sydney Gagnon was 3-for-5 on offense for the Cougars. ■
