LAKE GEORGE — The first-ever Leadership Day at Lake George Elementary was a hit last week, filled with dancing, singing and other student-driven performances. “It was great. I was very proud of how things went,” Principal James Conway said. “We are talking almost half of the student in the building,” he said of those that shared the habits

WARRENSBURG — Memorial weekend at Camp Echo Lake was filled with fun and a hefty schedule of activities. It was the first time such a program was planned for local children, free of charge for a group of Warrensburg fourthand fifth-graders, and the brainchild of Terry and Glenn Begly. “I’ve worked at Camp Echo Lake in the summers for over 40 years,” said Terry of her involvement with the camp, which has been in operation by the Stein family since 1946. Terry, a school psychologist with Bolton Central School, and Glenn, a retired teacher, sought to bring the experiences they saw with the children who attend the seven-week camp, to local students. “Typically, the summer season isn’t attended by local children. This camp is right in their backyard,” said Terry. The children were chosen to attend based on their positive attitude and kindness to their peers. The idea came to fruition, said the couple, due to the generous donation of the grounds for the weekend from camp owner Tony Stein and significant funding offered by Ash Anan and The Lotus Group of Companies. Stewarts Shops also made donations for the program. “Without them and the volunteers, this couldn’t have happened,” said Terry. Those volunteers consisted of a group of 20 Warrensburg High School students who served as counselors over the three days, along with area teachers and few friends of the Begly family from Montreal and California. Kayla Sweet, a Warrensburg senior, was one of the teen volunteers.
of leaders through their performances. “To be able to speak in front of 400 people…I know many adults who would struggle to do that,” he said. The habits the students demonstrated come from The Leader in Me program, based on the classic Stephen Covey book, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” The school was chosen in 2015 by the I Am A Leader Foundation to receive grant funding to empower the students through activities such as the leadership day. That empowerment, however, isn’t a one-time event. Leadership is alive every day at the school. “We’ve fostered a culture of children being respectful,” >> See LAKE GEORGE | pg. 16
