CORRECTING THE RECORD
We made a mistake with our graduation coverage — and we’re sorry

LAKE GEORGE | A malfunctioning lock temporarily imprisoned a pre-schooler and the child’s father recently in a rest room at Charles Wood Park, Lake George Village officials have said. Village public works superintendent Dave Harrington said that due to a commercial-grade lock’s failure, the sturdy metal entrance door to the rest room couldn’t be opened after the duo entered the facility.

In other business discussed at a special village board meeting held in early June, the panel established a new policy that grants “comp time” to the village’s half-dozen or so salaried employees when they work over 40 hours in a week. If they work 8 hours over that threshold, they will earn one day off during the next 30 days only; accumulation of days off will not be allowed.

Two Warren County supervisors, Claudia Braymer of Glens Falls and Douglas Beaty of Queensbury, have called for Walter Young, shown here at a meeting last month, to resign as director of the Lake Champlain-Lake George Regional Planning Board.

LAKE GEORGE | Last month, Glens Falls Supervisor Claudia Braymer called for the resignation of the executive director of the Lake Champlain-Lake George Regional Planning Board (LCLGRPB). On Friday, she suggested Executive Director Walter Young be replaced, and suggested a candidate for the job. After months of discussions regarding alleged mismanagement of a revolving loan fund administered by the LCLGRPB, Braymer suggested Young be removed and possibly

replaced by Jennifer Switzer, the Warren County Economic Development Corporation’s director of finance. “She would be very qualified to keep track of these loans and be very transparent - not blocking us from getting information about who is getting the loans and repayment status,” Braymer said. Both Braymer, who represents Glens Falls Ward 3 and Queensbury-at-large Supervisor Doug Beaty called for Young to resign last month. Numerous attempts to reach Young by telephone were unsuccessful. Approached at the county Economic Growth and Development Committee meeting last month, Young declined to comment on the call for his resignation, but said he felt the regional planning board and its loan advisory committee had been acting properly. Driver in collision three times legal limit
County inmate charged after search turns up weapon
LAKE GEORGE | The Warren County Sheriff’s Office filed charges against an inmate after a search resulted in officers finding a makeshift weapon in his cell. The sheriff’s office issued a press release on June 8 saying that officers at the Warren County Correctional Facility searched the cell of Miguel A. Medrano-Garcia, 21, of Hudson Falls, and located a ballpoint pen case that had been sharpened to a pointed edge hidden inside his cell. Medrano-Garcia has been incarcerated at the county jail on unrelated charges since March 18. On June 11, Medrano-Garcia was arrested for promoting prison contraband, a first degree, class D felony. He was arraigned at Queensbury Town Court and remanded back to the county jail in lieu of $1,500 cash bail or $3,000 bond. He is scheduled to re-appear at the court later this month. The case was investigated by Investigator Edward Affinito and Patrol Officer Jeremy Coon of the Warren County Sheriff’s Office. ■
LAKE GEORGE | A New Jersey woman involved in an accident in Lake George had a blood alcohol content that was three times the legal limit, police said. On June 10, at approximately 8:30 p.m., an officer from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office was called to the area of state Route 9 and 9N South in the Town of Lake George for a two-car property damage auto accident. After arrival, the officer began to investigate the accident and observed signs one of the drivers was intoxicated. He conducted field sobriety tests on the driver and as a result Sue A. Gibbons, 56, of Howell, New Jersey was arrested for aggravated DWI. Gibbons provided a breath sample which showed a BAC of .24, which is three times state’s legal limit of .08. Gibbons was processed for aggravated DWI and issued tickets for following too closely and refusal to take a roadside breath test. She was released and is due to appear in court at a later date. The arrest was made by Officer Kevin Yandon. ■

To date, the village has not officially granted time off in compensation for overtime work. Village board member John Root questioned the move, noting that in private employment, salaried employees routinely work overtime without compensation. However, he voted in favor of the resolution.

the arrest of Kristen E. Lortie, 37, of Hudson Falls, after an investigation into a complaint from the Warren County Department of Social Services (DSS). Lortie was charged with offering a false instrument for filing and one count of welfare fraud, both felonies. The complaints allege that between August 2017 and October 2017, while the defendant was residing in Washington County, she submitted Day Care Billing forms to employees of the DSS that contained false information. On the forms Lortie claimed she was still residing in Warren County. The welfare fraud complaint alleges Lortie received $2,134 in Child Care Assistance benefits she was ineligible to collect. Lortie was issued an appearance ticket to appear in Queensbury Town Court on June 25 at 9 a.m. ■
have a BAC of 0.14. Carpenter was charged with a felony due to a previous DWI conviction, and charged with assault related to the domestic incident. Carpenter posted bail and was released. The arrest was made by Patrol Officer Greg Dunn. ■
Not providing services, not returning money leads to charges
QUEENSBURY | A Troy man was charged with grand larceny after allegedly failing to provide services paid for by the victim and refusing to refund the money he paid. Johnny R. Bryant, 43, owner of Green Click Innovations was charged with one count of grand larceny by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office after the victim told police Bryant said he would provide tech services in the form of web page upgrades to the victim’s business web page. The victim paid Bryant $1,852 for services, which Bryant failed to perform, and refused to return the money he was paid. Bryant was processed and released to appear in Queensbury Town Court later this month. The sheriff’s office is aware that several other businesses in the area have had interactions with Bryant and request those businesses contact the Warren County Sheriff’s Office at 518-743-2500, or their local police department, if they believe they may be the victim of a crime. Investigator Doug David and Patrol Officer Dan Habshi were the investigating officers. ■
Sheriff’s officers make DWI arrest after domestic incident
WARRENSBURG | The Warren County Sheriff’s Office charged a man with DWI after being called to a domestic incident in Warrensburg. On June 9 at approximately 3:10 p.m., sheriff’s officers responded to an address in Warrensburg for a report of a domestic incident in progress. Prior to arrival, officers were advised two men fled the scene in a vehicle. The vehicle was located nearby and the operator, Jeffery L. Carpenter, 29, was arrested for DWI. Carpenter submitted to a chemical test and was found to
tice which is now counter to local zoning laws. They said they support appropriate, safe parking on private property during the Americade motorcycle rally, the Fourth of July, and the Adirondack Nationals Car Show. Problems with unsafe parking practices have occurred in past years, but village officials have not rigorously enforced zoning laws prohibiting it because the additional parking during large events was much needed, Blais said. The board decided to have Lake George Planning Director Dan Barusch re-draft local ordinances to allow safe parking on residential properties during specified events with restrictions that include that appropriate curb cuts are present. Blais noted that the village is hosting concerts this summer every night except two in July and August, and that the village is spending $100,000 for this musical entertainment. ■

On June 2, 2018, Marian Morey celebrated her 99th birthday with family and friends by having an open house pizza and cake & ice cream party at her home in Lake George, NY. Born on June 2, 1919, in Thurman, NY, Marian was the second child born to Edith Mattison Baker and Truman Baker. They moved often while Marian was growing up, necessitating that she acclimate to new schools numerous times—nine of these were one-room school houses, by the way. As she tended to be shy, this was often challenging for her. Her two siblings, Frances and Beecher passed some years ago. However, their children—as well as the children of her husband’s sibling, Kenneth Morey—remain close with their Aunt Marian. Marian and her husband James had four children: Virginia Morey Pike of Corinth; Gail Morey Malcolm Couse (formerly of Lake George, NY, now deceased); Penny Morey of Boca Raton, FL; and Ike Morey who is a fire fighter and resides with his wife Linda in West Melbourne, FL. Marian and her husband, James (Jim) were partners in running Morey Trucking for many years in the greater Lake George area. She managed the office and did the bookkeeping, as well. However, in her earlier years, she worked in Schenectady, NY, at General Electric during World War II while Jim was in the Navy serving in the Pacific. After the War, they returned home. Marian continued to do her share to support the family, first working at a shirt factory in Warrensburg, NY and then in Glens Falls, NY. Marian and Jim also owned a home in Silver Springs, FL, where they spent the winter months for many years—traveling back and forth in a motor home. Eventually, they decided to spend their remaining years solely in Lake George. James passed at age 88 in 2007, a few months after they had celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Marian was an excellent cook and homemaker in every sense. Virginia Morey Pike learned many kitchen skills from her mom and is a fabulous cook and baker and well as being a warm and welcoming hostess for family gatherings for decades. Virginia also was a teacher for 27 years in the Glens Falls School District where she was awarded the “Teacher of the Year” honor in 1997. Now, Marian is the matriarch of the Morey family. Her niece Richelene Morey (Mark Morey’s wife) is unfailingly helpful to Marian every week and her niece Darlene VanGuilder Gunther visits weekly and is always happy to be helpful to her Aunt Marian, as well. For Marian’s open house birthday celebration, both of her children from Florida visited as well as her more local daughter, Virginia; and her many grandchildren and great and great, great grandchildren stopped by. Marian is a voracious reader and a number of family members work constantly to keep up with having new books for her to read. Marian has a magnet on her refrigerator that says, “I plan to live forever. So far, so good!” 188711

North Warren principal retires after 33 years Principal once vowed never to work in community she loves
they’d gone through their files and found her information. Her cousin, a principal in a school in Rochester, told her to interview “for the experience.” They interviewed her and hired her in August, some 30 years ago. Andrew taught reading for 14 years before she decided she wanted to do something different. She decided to attend the College of St. Rose for a leadership program, and when the principal retired she interviewed for the position, again, for the experience. The school board asked Andrew to be the interim principal, and eventually gave her the job on a permanent basis. For a seven-year period she served as both elementary and secondary principal. Despite having to shoulder a lot of responsibilities, she wouldn’t have worked anywhere else. Most teachers feel the same way, she said. “Most often, if you take a job here you are here for your career. You have to be a special person to work in a community like this. You have to love the Adirondacks. You have to love the outside. You have to love the snow.” That doesn’t mean people who teach at NWCS are all homegrown: Elementary Principal Shelly Dupuis still lives in Greenwich. But according to Andrew, the staff have become a family — at least to her. “I consider the staff a family. They are the most caring group I’ve ever met. I would not have wanted to work any other place,” she said. Leaving will be bittersweet. But she knows it’s time to move on. The school needs someone like Caleb

CHESTERTOWN | When Theresa Andrew was a young girl, she spent most summers at her family’s camp in Newcomb. While driving past the former Pottersville School on Olmstedville Road one day, her mother looked at the school and said, “Wouldn’t you love to teach there?” “I said, ‘I wouldn’t work there if I never had a job,’” Andrew recalled. Now, after a 33-year career in education, the middle/high school principal said that she was one of the few North Warren Central School (NWCS) staff members who worked in the three old school buildings: Pottersville, Brant Lake and Chestertown. Andrew grew up in Valley Falls and went to SUNY-Oswego, before earning her master’s degree from the State University at Albany. Jobs were few and far between back then, but she got a job teaching reading at St. Augustine in Troy. Though she’d sent her resume to various school districts around the region, she was still surprised to hear from NWCS. “I said, “Where in the world is North Warren?’” Andrew said. The school had kept her resume, and when a reading teacher was needed,

Theresa Andrew will retire at the end of the school year, capping off a 33-year career in education. As a child, when her mother suggested she teach at the Pottersville School, she said she would rather not have a job. As her career comes to an end, she described her time at the school as “the reason (she) gets up in the morning.” Photo by Christopher South Martin, who has been named to succeed Andrew in September, Andrew said: “He’s young, he’s excited, and we feel the same way about the kids.” The school held a walk-through for Andrew, where students came out into the halls and handed her flowers and cards as she passed by. Third graders gave her a white basket with hearts that had her picture on it, with advice on what to do in her retirement. Andrew said she will probably take a part-time job for something to do. After that? Traveling to Nova Scotia and Italy. Whatever she does, she plans to take the summer off. ■
A correct page including updated pictures, information and all the ads sold on the page to support the keepsake is printed in today’s edition. We hate mistakes and do our best to prevent them, but they invariably happen. When they do occur, they are always a major concern for both readers and our staff because they typically deal with people’s lives. The information we provide is important and we will never make light of these occurrences. We messed up badly and all we can do is to admit the error, correct the information, apologize to the class, their parents, family and friends and take steps to ensure something similar does not occur in the future. We hope you know as readers of this publication we will always freely admit when we step-in-it as badly as we did here. We wish we were perfect, but as you well know life doesn’t work that way. ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
What is truth?
The real truth is what we all long to know. Philosophers have searched for the meaning of truth down through By Dan Alexander the ages, dating back • PUBLISHER • to the earliest of time. In our current state of affairs, we tend to pick and choose the truth we are willing to accept based more on perspective than on rock solid facts. So as I pondered the true meaning of truth, like most of us in the modern era without an encyclopedia, I sought out wisdom from the internet to see what I could find. Here is what I found truth not to be. • Truth is not simply whatever works. This is the philosophy of pragmatism – an ends-vs.-means-type approach. In reality, lies can appear to “work,” but they are still lies and not the truth. • Truth is not simply what is coherent or understandable. A group of people can get together and form a conspiracy based on a set of falsehoods where they all agree to tell the same false story, but it does not make their presentation true. • Truth is not what makes people feel good. Unfortunately, bad news can be true. • Truth is not what the majority says is true. Fifty-one percent of a group can reach a wrong conclusion. • Truth is not what is comprehensive. A lengthy, detailed presentation can still result in a false conclusion. • Truth is not defined by what is intended. Good intentions can still be wrong. • Truth is not how we know; truth is what we know. • Truth is not simply what is believed. A lie believed is still a lie. Recognizing what is not truth helps us deal better with information that is presented to us as truth, especially when we deal with general public perception, politics, and differences between what people think and believe. Those with a strong religious faith believe that truth is God. Far too many today have turned their backs on God, believing the concept is outdated and is no longer needed in our enlightened society. Perhaps this is one reason why truth is so elusive in the world today. We put our faith and belief in humans only to discover they were not always truthful. When we mix opinions, feelings, good intentions, personal agendas, finances, and accountability, it’s no wonder the real truth can be easily manipulated. The answer to what is truth rests with each of us to use the common sense we’ve developed over time to determine what to believe and when in doubt remain skeptical. ■

Rank-choice voting a concept worth exploring
Registered Democrats head to the polls on Tuesday, June 26 to pick their candidate to go up against Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Republican, in this fall’s midterm elections. It’s been a long contest. The first candidate entered the race the day before President Trump took office last January. The pack swelled to as high as 10 before slimming down to the current five. Since then, the campaign has been a seemingly endless roadshow of candidate events and forums, which were policy-rich and substantive, but also tended to blur together. The similarities of the candidates became an ongoing theme during the contest, with Democrats often joking about the size of their pack and the similarity of their messaging. Read no further if you’re expecting an endorsement. The Sun Editorial Board does not endorse political candidates. But we do encourage readers to probe deeper into intriguing concepts. Like rank-choice voting. Under this system, rather than selecting one candidate, voters rank all candidates in sequential order of preference. Candidates earning an outright majority win. If there is no clear winner, the candidate with the fewest first-choice votes is eliminated, and their ballots are redistributed to those whomever those voters ranked second. The process continues until one candidate has a majority. Rank-choice voting, also known as instant runoff, is gaining traction across the U.S., most recently in Maine, which became the fi rst state to use the system in a statewide election.
Letters
San Francisco, Minneapolis and Oakland have also recently used rank-choice voting. Advocates, including several candidates in next week’s Democratic primary, argue the system helps prevent candidates getting elected with less than a majority. After watching the Democratic primary contest unfold in New York’s 21st Congressional District, we think the rank-choice model might be worth exploring. Here’s why: The district contains 400,000 registered voters, about 117,000 of whom are active registered Democrats. Only 44,000 people turned out for the 2016 Democratic presidential primary contest between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Presidential election years are largely considered to be a high-water mark in voter participation, and turnout is always lower in midterms and local elections. Most experts and pundits have said they’d be astonished if Democrat turnout next week cracks 25,000 — even in this era of hyperpolarization that sees Trump as nothing short as a madman single-handedly unwinding the global order. So what this ultimately means is each of the five Democrats is competing for a comparatively small handful of votes, and it’s likely none of them will walk away with an outright majority. Of course, low turnout could be attributed to a number of reasons, and the state should not scrap its voting system because Democrats couldn’t be bothered going to the polls or if the candidates could not effectively distinguish themselves. But instant runoff is also gaining trac-
North Country should fight for environmental protections
To the Editor: What makes a community strong are its shared values and the ability to reach outside of itself for the common good. Much of history is driven by individual greed and quest for power. But the ideal has always been to strive for the common good, to be good stewards for the future. Today the common good, the protection of the natural beauty and the environment is under attack. We have turned the stewardship of our lands over to a New York mafioso-like developer. His followers applaud the good works of Scott Pruitt (Director of the EPA) and Ryan Zinke (Director of the Interior) who appear to place little value on our wildlands and the natural environment except to extract as much profit as possible. Have we become so desensitized by social media, incessant political news programs and personal bickering that we no longer feel the warmth of the sun, coldness of the winter wind and the excitement of a hawk flying overhead? We blindly close our minds to the continual eroding of our

tion among anti-Trumpers who are growing more vocal in asserting that a rank-choice system would have presented the controversial president’s ascension through the GOP primary cycle. Trump secured his party’s nomination after dispatching 16 challengers. But he was not the first-choice pick of many, and his top three challengers collectively received 2 million more votes than he did, Newsweek reported, splitting the anti-Trump vote. “Many of those 15 million voters might have preferred one of the other top-tier candidates to Trump as their second choice,” the magazine reported. “But there is no way of knowing, because they were able to choose only one candidate.” While praised for boosting turnout, the system does have its flaws. Rank-choice has also been criticized as confusing, unwieldy and expensive. Critics also contend the system results in bland and colorless campaigns that emphasize cooperation and coalition-building rather than spirited contests in which candidates seek to draw sharp distinctions. To some extent, we’ve seen that during this Democratic primary cycle, as campaigns have largely avoided publicly issuing negative attacks at the risk of alienating supporters they may need in the future. But as we head out of this G-rated primary and into the general election that will likely be framed around all-things Trump, it’s worth considering the experiment of rank-choice voting as a concept worthy of further discussion. ■ — The Sun Editorial Board
natural environment. We allow our natural heritage to vanish to be benefit a privileged few. Regulations can be overly burdensome, but at the same time a laissez-faire attitude offers no protection for that which can not protect itself. I often wonder why in an area where many persons pride themselves on their individuality, their love of the outdoors and hunting and their disdain for large urban areas fail to oppose those who fail to provide the stewardship for the common area which is so vital to the strength of this country. » Resignation Cont. from pg. 1 The board met last week and named a new chairman, Town of Hampton (Washington County) Supervisor David O’Brien. The board also set up a governance committee to review the board’s existing bylaws; an action coming in the wake of claims the board and its loan committee had not been following established bylaws. One issue was the LCLGRPB conducting business with only six positions on the 10member Loan Advisory Committee being filled. Washington County Supervisor Dana Haff (Hartford) said none of the business the loan committee did was valid unless all six members voted for it. Young said the board counted a majority of those voting, in person or by proxy,

as being adequate. Last month members of the committee participated in a meeting with the Warren County Economic Growth & Development Committee. Members of the Warren County Board of Supervisors and the EG&D committee have questioned the management of a revolving loan fund. The Loan Advisory Committee reviews applications for loans and members vote to approve the loans. As of last month, the fund had over $1 million in loans considered like to default. The $1 million represents about 37 percent of the existing loans. Beaty has been questioning the practices of the LCLGRPB and its Loan Advisory Committee and called for Young to resign for failure to cooperate with investigations of the board’s operations. “I’ve had it with Mr. Young,” said Queens-
CHESTERTOWN | The Town of Chester Library will hold its summer sale on Friday, July 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, July 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second floor of the municipal building at 6307 Route 9 in the Town of Chester. Up for sale will be a collection of novels by popular authors, cook books, history, military, western, gardening, romance, mystery, travel, children and young adult books. The library will offer old, first edition, interesting and » Letters Cont. from pg. 6 How much of a percentage of a town (albeit tax free) can a historical organization own, within legal limitations? Or is there, indeed, nothing stopping it from being a town owning monopoly? Lastly, the police need to step it up big time! Rumors of it being beefed up recently mean nothing to me. Actions speak louder than words and there is a very long list of unsolved crimes telling me that they don’t deserve a pat on the back. How much you make generally determines who you are with few exceptions. We need leadership with a face and a voice. We need to grab Ticonderoga before it slips away. Taking the high road with Trump talk
To the Editor: (Th is letter is in response to “A deceptive master plan” by Dan Alexander in the June 16 edition.) We enjoyed your editorial, which we found to be logical, without emotion and a factual assessment of President Donald Trump. We found it very refreshing in this day and age of fake news and reporters’ personal views on world affairs to have your take on our president’s job performance. Lou Garso, Au Sable Forks ■
Trump’s press woes are self-inflicted
To the Editor: (Th is letter is in response to “A deceptive master plan” by Dan Alexander in the June 16 edition.) Your concern about the extreme reaction to our president by the negative press and night comedians, begging for a good old recession, is misplaced. I find that our president creates most of his negative press by tweeting ridiculous statements, making false comments and statements to the press and others. I have never read that anyone is begging for an old-style recession. Giving him credit for the good economy is very questionable. The good economy is a worldwide economy. He inherited a good economy when he took office, after a deep recession that was created by mismanagement of the fi nancial world and supply side economics.
Glens Falls Supervisor Claudia Braymer suggested the five counties in the Lake Champlain-Lake George Regional Planning Board consider replacing LCLGRPB Director Walter Young with Jennifer Switzer, the finance director for the Warren County Economic Development Corporation. The planning board duties would be in addition to her current obligations. Photo provided bury Supervisor Douglas Beaty. “I’ve asked the five counties to ask him to resign.” While Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Conover (Bolton Landing) expressed optimism that steps were being taken to improve the operation of the LCLGRPB and its Loan Advisory Committee, Beaty called for the county to hold the board accountable for its past actions.
SWITZER HAS FINANCIAL EXPERIENCE
Braymer talked to Switzer prior to the Board of Supervisors meeting and Switzer said she felt she could handle the LCLGRPB direc-
special books including 54 volumes of “Great Books of the Western World.” The sale will include many audio and video CDs, vinyl records as well as puzzles and games. The sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Town of Chester Library. For more information, call 518-494-3584. ■

Now he is removing the regulations that were put in place to stop the illegal spending, and now he is going to put in the progrowth theory. Cut taxes and keep spending. If the economy slows down will he take the blame for it? Or will he just blame the Democrats? I disagree with your paragraph that the current White House resident gets little-tono credit for many accomplishments done. Every day we get news of what they are doing. They take credit for many accomplishments and blame for nothing that is not good and blame the Democrats. The big issue of the future: Will China take over being number one in the world economy? I do agree with you that we have a donothing Congress. By doing nothing they have turned over most of the responsibility to the president, which is not the way our government has been designed. Rep. Stefanik should vote “no” on SNAP reductions
To the Editor: Some of your neighbors are hungry and many of them are children. As they leave the security of meals at school, summer fun might be tinged with a grumbling stomach. This is not a time to reduce support for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the anti-hunger, food nutrition program promoted under the huge omnibus 2018 Farm Bill. The U.S. Senate recognizes this, their version of the bill does not reduce support for food nutrition. But Rep. Stefanik recently voted for a House version of the Farm Bill that would have reduced support for SNAP and imposed unrealistic work requirements. Almost all SNAP recipients work. They should not be required to find additional, rarely available time so that they can simply feed their kids. That House version of the Farm Bill did not pass; a newer version may come up for a vote on June 22. For the sake of the almost 20 percent of the children who live below the poverty line in her district, I hope that Rep. Stefanik does not vote “yes” unless SNAP remains supported and unburdened with additional bureaucracy. There are hungry children, not to mention veterans and seniors, awaiting her compassion. Guest Column
We should want borders we can be proud of By Kathryn Cramer GUEST COLUMNIST
I first crossed an open border in Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall, but before German unification. We drove into East Germany, towards Leipzig. The guard towers, windows smashed, were still there. And the razor wire. We drove past the booth, unable to believe it was abandoned. Months earlier, if we had driven through without stopping, we would have been shot. The radio played “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.” This January, I drove with my kids in a rented Volvo from Stockholm to Oslo. We knew we had crossed over into Norway when we didn’t understand the road signs anymore. I pulled over. We looked up Norwegian signs on Wikipedia on a cell phone. Other than bewildering road signs, it wasn’t much different than crossing from New York to Vermont. Since President Trump’s new family separation policies took effect in April, I have heard the phrase “open borders” a lot from Trump’s defenders, who claim to be against them and who say critics of the president’s immigration policies are for “open borders.” While it is true that once in the 1970s, I crossed from Washington to Canada and back using only a Seattle Public Library card, during my lifetime, the U.S. has never had open international borders, nor do I expect to ever see that. The open borders the U.S. does have are between states. It is not clear what the opponents of so-called open borders think they are arguing for, but the opposite of open borders is closed borders, as in the sentence, “On August 13th, 1961, the East German government closed the border between East and West Berlin.” While closing the border and building Trump’s Wall has been marketed
as needed to keep bad people out, closed borders have another function: they keep people in. Under another less hostile administration and with appropriate preparation, I see no reason that the U.S. and Canada couldn’t eventually have a border as open as that between Sweden and Norway. But those like me opposed to Trump’s aggressive immigration policies are not pushing “open borders.” This GOP talking point apparently comes from a speech by Hillary Clinton during the campaign: she was advocating for the free movement of goods and energy, not people. Trump’s border is already less porous than it should be. There is a strange spot at the U.S./ Canadian border on a backstreet called Roxham Road in Champlain, where, since Trump took office, over 5,000 people have fled the U.S., mostly people whose papers are not in order. I went there. No immigrants were crossing. But I did see a sunlit bunny dart across into the Canadian woods. I waved to the Mounties on the other side. Immigrant crossings there have become so prevalent that Canada has a building, powered by solar collectors, to process those who cross there. And Roxham Road is a flashpoint for Canadian immigration debate. It is an illegal crossing, and so crossers are arrested. But because of the complex border agreements between two formerly friendly countries, these people have no better way out of the U.S. What came to mind when visiting Roxham Road was Leonard Cohen’s line, “There is a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in.” After returning from living for a year Europe in the 1980s, I used to be proud of the pleasant, friendly way the U.S. managed its borders and thought of this as an indicator that the U.S. was a free country. I would like to feel that pride again. ■ — Kathryn Cramer resides in Westport
