North Creek GROUP AIMS TO PROTECT, businesses RESTORE LAKE WATERSHED asked for help acquiring shuttle bus By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

NORTH CREEK | A fundraiser will be conducted soon to bankroll the purchase of an additional vehicle for the North Creek shuttle bus operation, and businesses are being asked to help launch the effort. Since 2011, the North Creek Business Alliance has provided a free shuttle service on weekends and holiday weeks » Bus Cont. on pg. 2

By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

For eight years, the North Creek Business Alliance has provided a free shuttle service, primarily from downtown North Creek to Gore Mountain — as well as for local civic organizations and special town events. The Sun file photo

LAKE GEORGE | The Lake George Partnership recently reviewed six area environmental projects the group is coordinating, in an effort to protect the water of the lake and the ecological integrity of the region. The Lake George Partnership consists of representatives of the Lake George Association, the Fund for Lake George and other environmental groups, the Lake George Park Commission, the Lake Champlain-Lake George Regional Planning Board, shoreline municipalities around the lake including both the town and village of Lake George, and Warren County government.

Chamber to honor citizens, biz of year

The Lake George Partnership was formed following the demise of the Lake George Watershed Coalition, which was disbanded months ago after its executive director Walter Decker was arrested on fraud and grand larceny charges related to alleged diversion of grant funding. The Watershed Coalition had been a primary conduit for grant money awarded to protect the environmental quality of Lake George and its watershed. With the formation of the Lake George Partnership, the Planning Department of Warren County took over the coalition’s role in obtaining grants as well as the primary planning and coordination of environmental projects. WARRENSBURG | A banquet has been scheduled to pay tribute to a local couple for their civic work, as well as to honor the founder of a fitness enterprise for providing a vital service for area citizens. The Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce has named John and Lisa Alexander as Citizens of the Year, and awarded Cycling Studio on Park — operated by Bob Olden — as Business of the Year. A banquet has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 30, at Brunetto’s Restaurant to recognize Olden and the Alexanders, and tickets for the event are now available. Reservations should be made as soon as possible, chamber executive director Suzanne Tyler said Monday. “We expect a capacity crowd at the banquet,” she said. This annual chamber banquet begins with a cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m.; dinner follows at 6:30 p.m.. The awards are to presented during the meal. Brunetto’s is located on

Also, she praised the Alexanders for their civic work, noting that Lisa has launched a successful campaign for public holiday lighting displays that have garnered regional acclaim, and John has been involved in a substantial number of progressive civic initiatives while serving on the town board for 12 years. The Alexander family owns and operates the Alexander Funeral Home, based in Warrensburg. Reservations with dinner selections must be made with the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce by Tuesday, July 23. Lake George Partnership was an application being prepared to seek a total of $621,000 for six major projects to improve the watershed’s environment, $463,500 of that sum from the state of New York through its Local Waterfront Revitalization program. Warren County Senior Planner Chris Belden presented an outline of the projects — and their pending funding applications — to the other members of the Lake George Partnership. The six projects are for work in the village and town of Lake George, and the towns of Bolton, Queensbury and Ticonderoga as well as a sixth project to be conducted by the county Public Works department to make stormwater and erosion control upgrades involving county roadways. Lake George Village is seeking to conduct stormwater management improvements in the Schuyler Heights neighborhood near the village hall, and for the design and replacement of a rotted box culvert underneath Dieskau Street — at a total cost of $160,000. The Town of Lake George is working toward completing engineering designs for the stormwater system between state Route 9L and the East Brook outlet. A total of $40,000 is envisioned to be appropriated for the engineering designs and to pay for the cost of materials and construction of improvements to the stormwater conveyance system in the Beatty Road area. The Town of Bolton is seeking $166,224 from the state » FLW Cont. from pg. 1 “Anglers in this BFL tournament will again have to choose between targeting largemouth, smallmouth, or both. For those chasing largemouth, working a ChatterBait around scattered milfoil, a crankbait around sparse grass and rocks, or a swim jig near lily pads and reeds around Ticonderoga (as FLW Tour champion Casey Scanlon did) will likely be a good bet. Swimbaits, jerkbaits and drop-shot rigs should entice smallmouth, especially near rocks and points. Five bass in the 20-pound range should be enough to take home top honors at this mid-July BFL derby.” The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit “devoted to weekend anglers,” with 128 tournaments throughout the season, with five qualifying events in each division. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

NOT JUST FISHING

The economic impact of the fishing tournaments on Lake Champlain is well documented. But often the anglers do more than fish while in town. During the recent FLW Tour event, community outreach was arranged at the University of Vermont Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh. FLW Tour pros visited and shared stories with patients, guests, fans and staff prior to the start of the tournament. They snapped photos, signed autographs and gave out goodie bags. » Bus Cont. from pg. 1

during ski season, as well as for special events held yearround in the Town of Johnsburg. The Alliance also provides free shuttle services for local nonprofit groups for outings at their request. Recently, Warren County appropriated a $36,000 grant drawn from county occupancy tax receipts to underwrite leasing a shuttle bus for North Creek over three years. But faced with an aging fleet of shuttles, the leaders of the North Creek Business Alliance are now seeking to purchase an additional pre-owned shuttle, and they are asking area businesses to sponsor a raffle to raise the money for such a purchase.

for a project to increase the efficiency of their wastewater pump stations near the lake. At the North and Norowal pump stations, the town is planning to install digital control systems that monitor the pumps’ performance. For Bolton’s main pump station, design and installation of a supplemental backup system is envisioned. The total project cost is estimated to be $230,000. In the Town of Ticonderoga, stormwater and erosion control improvements are to be conducted along Baldwin and Black Point roads, at a cost of $38,000 — $27,463 of which is to be covered by state grant funds. In the Town of Queensbury, efforts are underway to secure property as the site for the proposed Rockhurst Community Sewer System. The town is seeking grant money toward the $60,000 project to complete engineering for the sewer system and to prepare a map, plan and report that are required by the state to establish a new Rockhurst sewer district. In another initiative, Beth Gillis, director of the Lake Champlain-Lake George Regional Planning Board, reviewed her agency’s new proposal to prepare a comprehensive action plan for the Lake George watershed. The document would involve an inventory and analysis of the watershed and its conditions, recommendations for environmental restoration and protection of water quality, and a remediation implementation strategy. The action plan is also envisioned to include recommendations for proposed local legislation to better protect the lake’s watershed. A sum of $61,000 is being sought to bankroll preparation of the plan. ■ “Hosting the FLW Tournament is a real honor for our community and we’re fortune that these professionals take the time to visit,” Kerry Haley, executive director of the Foundation at CVPH, told The Sun. “Having them here was a real treat.” Other efforts included a Unified Fishing Derby, where FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley and other FLW Tour anglers helped area Special Olympics athletes 18 and younger catch bass. An FLW Expo provided the opportunity to meet some of the top tour pros to discuss fishing tips, techniques and stories. Interactive activities and games were available, including a casting pond, fishing demos and more.

COSTA EVENT NEXT

The following weekend is the Costa FLW Series Northern Division event on Lake Champlain, set for July 18-20. Take-off is at 6 a.m. all three days at the Plattsburgh City Marina. Weigh-in will be from 2-6 p.m. each day at the same location. The Costa event is also hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau. That event is expected to draw many local anglers to the waters of Lake Champlain. For complete details and updated information, visit FLWFishing.com. For regular updates, photos, tournament news and more, follow FLW’s social media outlets at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. ■ The raffle is to offer three cash prizes — first prize of $5,000; second prize, $3,000; and third prize, $1,000 — to be drawn at the Gore Mountain Harvest Festival on Oct. 14. The cost of the tickets is $20 each. The alliance is asking area businesses to sponsor the fundraiser by purchasing 10 tickets to be re-sold to their patrons. The names of the patron businesses are to be listed on publicity materials. Businesses are asked to commit to sponsorships by July 17, by sending a check for $200 to North Creek Business Alliance, P.O. Box 280, North Creek, NY 12853. For years, North Creek Business Alliance has been boosting commerce as well as supporting cultural and social activities in the Town of Johnsburg and its hamlet of North Creek. ■

‘Taste of Diamond Point’ marks 12 years By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

DIAMOND POINT | Hundreds of fine-food enthusiasts will be gathering on the lawn of the Diamond Point Community Church next Saturday to savor a social event that features samplings of gourmet edibles prepared by local restaurants, while providing vital support for a local historic chapel. The 12th-annual “A Taste of Diamond Point” is to be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, on the grounds of the church at ~ 3699 Lake Shore Drive. Ten Diamond Point area establishments will offer samples of their cuisine under tents set up on the lawn. Each year, various fine eateries offer some unique concoctions. For example, in 2010 the Inn at Erlowest served up a chocolate “Opera Torte” confection dipped in 24-carat gold leaf. Tickets to obtain food samples are sold for $1 each. The restaurant or deli represented at the event that collects the most tickets wins the People’s Choice award. Also, every 10 minutes during the event, drawings are held for raffle prizes donated by area businesses. A Taste of Diamond Point has annually included live musical entertainment as well as activities for children. This year, Nancy Kimball — a licensed wildlife rehabilitator who cares for orphaned and injured animals — will be attending the event with a raptor. The event, presented by friends, volunteers and the congregation of the church, is held rain or shine. Establishments to be represented include: Inn at Erlowest, Lizzie Keays Restaurant, Canoe Island Lodge, Boathouse Restaurant at Cresthaven, Famiglia’s Deli, Big Moose Delicatessen, Diamond Point Grille, Stable Gate Deli and Stewart’s Shops. Proceeds from the annual event, launched in 2008, go toward repairs and maintenance of the 140-year-old church.■

New top chef at LG Holiday Inn drafts new menu By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | A chef with considerable culinary experience has taken over the reins of Lake George Holiday Inn Resort’s kitchen operations, and the result is a new menu with enticing selections. The new menu was introduced in June after the recent hiring of chef Mickey Hopkins, 41, of Thurman. Hopkins most recently was the chef at George’s Steak House, following a five-year tenure as executive chef at Blue Water Manor on Lake George. His credentials include a prior stint at the famed Hotel Hershey in Hershey, Pa., following 12 years of employment at The Sagamore Resort, where he started off as a line cook and worked his way up to chef position, Hopkins said. “I’m very fortunate that I had the opportunity to work with a lot of very talented chefs at the nine restaurants of The Sagamore, which really boosted my career,” Hopkins said, noting that The Sagamore and Hotel Hershey have been awarded with either four- or five-star ratings. Hopkins, a native of Warrensburg, said his work at these two prestigious resorts as well as George’s Restaurant allowed him to acquire skills in preparing a wide range of cuisines. One of his roles at The Sagamore was serving as their “garde manger” chef, specializing in preparing centerpieces, ice carvings, sushi bars and high-end hors d’oeuvres. Hopkins said he will be utilizing these abilities at the Holiday Inn for special occasions including wedding receptions, banquets and other special occasions. Hopkins said he really enjoys his new position at the Holiday Inn for a variety of reasons — the facility and its premises, but primarily the staff and management. “I’m really enjoying the atmosphere at the Holiday Inn — it’s a beautiful resort,” he said. “When I interviewed for the position, I was really impressed.” Asked to describe his approach to cooking, Hopkins offered his thoughts without hesitation. “I like to keep it fresh, clean and honest, with not too much going on,” he said. Vincent Crocitto III — a co-owner of the resort with his father, Vincent “Vinnie” Crocitto II — said Hopkins was an “outstanding” addition to the Holiday Inn staff. “Hopkins is quite well organized — it’s now smooth operations in our kitchen 24/ 7, whether there’s one order or 100,” the younger Crocitto said. “He has a team that is loyal to him and follows his directions. Hopkins has a quiet confidence and a steady hand. Talented people really enjoy working in his kitchen — it’s a great work environment.” Among those joining him is Dale Depold, former owner of Grandma’s Back Porch, who is now serving as Holiday Inn’s sous-chef.

Mickey Hopkins, the new executive chef at Lake George Holiday Inn Resort, brings with him a wealth of culinary expertise gained at four- and five-star resorts. The Holiday Inn’s restaurant now has a wide range of entrees on their new menu that reflects the varied cuisines for which Hopkins has garnered considerable acclaim. Photo by Thom Randall

The new dinner menu at the Holiday Inn features new surf and turf options of fresh lobster tails or shrimp along with top sirloin, premium aged prime New York strip steak or center-cut filet mignon. They join several chicken selections, award-winning barbecued baby back ribs, clams and linguini, shrimp scampi, Long Island duck breast, as well as a premium bull moose burger. One of their specialties is the entree of sustainable salmon from the Faroe Islands of Scotland. A range of appetizers features authentic Maryland crab cake, which has been a hit with people who know and appreciate the genuine version, Crocitto said. The Holiday Inn’s lunch menu features their cajun mahi mahi taco plate, chicken Caprese with Genovese pesto, a vegan pita and a New York pastrami sandwich. South-ofthe-border selections include their chipotle burrito and

loaded chili, served in a bread bowl. Their full menus can be seen at: www.trsrestaurant.com, Crocitto said. “Our new menus have a wide range of options with a lot of great flavors,” Crocitto said. The Crocitto family bought the Holiday Inn Resort in May 2017, and since then have completed renovation of all 24 of their Lakeview rooms, Crocitto said. “We now have the most modern suites in Lake George,” he said. Other upgrades include renovations to the resort’s fitness center and indoor swimming pool, as well as a new business center. Also, their outdoor pool, positioned so swimmers have a panoramic view of Lake George, now has fire tables positioned nearby. ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

America the beautiful

I wonder at times if Americans have gotten too caught up in the current day hustle and bustle of life to reflect By Dan Alexander on what a great country • PUBLISHER • we are privileged to call home. There have been many societies down through the ages that took for granted all the benefits they had built over the years and ultimately lost their way. At some point, we each have to take stock in what we have and what we expect from our individual and collective efforts as well as those from our government, charged with maintaining and building a foundation for the nation. National optimism seems to have taken a back seat these days to finger-pointing. Nearly every major community around the nation has a July Fourth celebration, so why shouldn’t there be one in Washington? From the moment it was announced by the president that there would be a Fourth of July event, in the nation’s capital, the nay-sayers for Trump’s Fourth of July Event were non-stop, before, during and after the event. It’s a shame that on this special day, the nation couldn’t put political differences aside and celebrate arm-in-arm. The event wasn’t a political rally, it was All-American celebration, but both sides ginned it up, and it sadly became just another political football. I strongly doubt in the future there will be much talk about what’s right with America and what a great nation we are blessed to call our home. That’s what I see at the root of our national discontentment. We spend far too much time defining our political differences and not nearly enough time celebrating our freedoms and our ordinary citizens who go about their business each day, raising families, building lives and making their version of the American dream a reality. Opportunity is all around us if we just open our eyes and take time to smell the roses. The nation is full of beautiful landscapes, magnificent cities, wonderful hospitals and creative, talented and generous people who give so much of themselves. It’s uplifting just to be in their company and hear their stories. We should spend more time focused on the positives we see around us, the debt we owe to those who gave birth to this great nation and most of all those who fight daily to protect us and preserve the freedoms we value. America has much to be proud of, but it’s up to us to recognize her beauty and share that optimism with those around us. ■

Listening to the needs of local highway departments Whether transporting products for a small business, going to work or getting their kids to school, folks in the By Rep. Billy Jones North Country depend • GUEST COLUMNIST • on our local roads and bridges that get them where they need to go. That’s why this summer I’m touring our local highway departments to learn how the state can better serve their needs. It’s been a busy week to start off July, touring nine town highway garages over three days. I kicked off my tour with local highway superintendents in the towns of Beekmantown, Schuyler Falls and Plattsburgh, followed by rides and discussions with highway and town supervisors of Burke, Bellmont and Chateaugay in Franklin County. I’ve also visited the northern Clinton County towns of Champlain, Chazy and Mooers, and I plan to visit the remaining towns in my district throughout the summer. As part of each tour, I’ve hosted roundtable discussions with town supervisors and village mayors to listen to their

concerns. I have learned much from our discussions regarding the needs of our local municipalities. Throughout the year, local highway departments are busy repairing pavement, guide rails, bridges, drainage systems and traffic signs as well as removing litter and debris. In the winter months, local highway crews are out day and night, plowing and de-icing local roads, to ensure safety for the traveling public. While major thoroughfares get the most attention, maintaining local infrastructure is just as important. A 2017 report from the Office of the State Comptroller showed that town-owned bridges are more likely to be structurally deficient than bridges owned by other local entities, especially in rural towns. Last summer, the families who live on Cold Brook Road in Saranac experienced this firsthand when the Cold Brook Bridge was unexpectedly shut down due to structural deficiencies. The emergency closure forced 18 families to resort to an incredibly bumpy 25-minute detour that significantly increased commute times, put families at risk due to potentially delayed emergency services

and threatened the safety of seniors on their way to local health-care facilities. To help repair and replace the North Country’s roads and bridges, I fought for a 2019-20 state budget that provides $438.1 million for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPs) and $39.7 million for the Marchiselli Program. These programs help municipalities to complete much-needed road and bridge maintenance projects. Additionally, during the final weeks of the 2019 legislative session, I helped secure $65 million in Extreme Winter Recovery funding. North Country families are no strangers to the harsh conditions that winter weather can bring, and these funds will offer critical relief to our communities. I look forward to continuing my highway department tour and learning firsthand from those who work on our local infrastructure. I’ll always fight to invest in our roads and bridges so our families can travel safely and our businesses can continue getting the job done. My door is always open. At a prior edition of Chester Library’s annual summer book sale, bibliophiles peruse some of the thousands of books and other materials available at a modest cost. Photo by Thom Randall

Chester Library’s famed book sale coming soon By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

CHESTERTOWN | The local library summer book sale — which routinely attracts hundreds of people not only from the region but from all over northeastern U.S. and Canada — is to be held this weekend. The sale is set to occur Friday, July 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, July 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second floor of the town of Chester Municipal Center. Most of the thousands of books available range in cost from 50 cents to $1. A bag sale is scheduled for Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

The sale annually features a wide selection of books including fiction, poetry, the classics, novels, mysteries, science fiction and coffee table volumes. Biographies include works on political, literary, entertainment and historical figures. The cookbooks for sale cover an array of topics from basic instruction to exploring exotic cuisines. The sale’s collection of children’s story books and nonfiction collection is extensive. Also, a variety of teaching materials, textbooks and volumes in assorted fields of knowledge is routinely available at this sale. In nonfiction, there are collections that range from history and politics, to business, self-help, travel and do-it-yourself

==============-!--==============

People lost in time The days of our lives come and go, mostly uneventful and quickly forgotten, but in rare cases a combination of factors come together, probably after the dark of the moon, that converge into hell on Earth. In the old days such events were attributed to the work of the devil. The worst day in history, so far, started June 28, 1914, and quickly evolved into a world event completely changing life on the planet Earth forever.

A SUNNY DAY IN JUNE

On an average day in Bosnia, Princess Sophie Chotek, a beautiful lady of 45 years, must have arose from her comfortable bed early in the day looking forward to a fine summer day with her handsome husband. He was Francis Ferdinand, 50 years old, heir apparent to the Austro-Hungarian throne. The happy couple had a true love story and were the proud parents of four children, one of which unfortunately had been still-born. During an official visit to the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo they rode in an open carriage, and as they approached the “Latin Bridge,” they were both shot by a young, crazed Bosnian Serb nationalist by the name of Gavrilo Princip who was holding a FN 1910 semi-automatic handgun, the bullets of which he emptied into them.

Turning back the pages

Francis Ferdinand was shot in the neck and Duchess Sophie Maria Josephine Albina Chotek, of Hohenberg, was shot in the abdomen. They were both dead within an hour and repercussions were heard around the world. What did this innocent couple do to meet such a horrible end? It is called war and politics. This was the beginning of World War I. The origins of the war lie in the reaction of world powers to the ambitions of the German Empire after 1871 and it all came to a head when the Duke and Duchess were murdered. An armistice was finally signed on Nov. 10, 1918, after poison gas was used in battles and battlefield casualties were counted from countries around the world. There were tens of thousands of wounded men in our army hospitals, and every returning transport and hospital ship returning brought more. In the USA alone our casualties were a total of more than 236,117 with 1,160 missing in action and 179,625 wounded. I have to laugh, although it certainly is not funny, at the debates I see on TV today that spout gun control in the USA where there are said to be more guns than citizens. Albert Einstein once said that World War III will be fought with rocks.

eries, native ecology and tourism. Although the memorandum does not mention them specifically, its focus is on two boat launches south of Ticonderoga at Rogers Rock and Mossy Point. Neither have gates to prevent boat launching when the boat washing stations have closed for the day. Other state boat launches do, including those at Million Dollar Beach in Lake George Village. Staff members at boat launching stations inspect incoming boats for invasives and wash boats that are contaminated. Boats that do not visit other lakes can take advantage of a special seal that tells attendants that the craft is not a risk. The state has said Mossy Point and Rogers Rock do not present significant risk because few boats are launched in off hours. But proponents of the gates, including environmental groups and lakeside towns, say it would only take one missed boat to introduce an invasive. They also note

TICONDEROGA | Ticonderoga has joined a list of towns calling for after-hours lockdowns of two northern Lake George boat launches to prevent the spread of invasive species. The board signed a memorandum of understanding at its last monthly meeting “to work in good faith to create an effective program to prevent the introduction of aquatic invasive species in Lake George.” Supervisor Joe Giordana said most jurisdictions around the lake have signed the memorandum, which describes a “serious and urgent threat” by invasives to the health of Lake George, which is considered a model in the fight against invasives. The same jurisdictions voted in 2013 in favor of stricter rules to prevent invasives, which can damage fish-

that the two northern launches are particularly important because of their proximity to Lake Champlain. Lake Champlain, which is open to international waterways, has more than 50 non-native species — not all non-native species are considered invasive, however. To be considered invasive, the species must cause documented ecological or economic damage. Lake George has five invasive species, and notably has not encountered a new one since tighter regulations were put in place in 2014 that included mandatory boat inspections. The memorandum notes that $9 million has been spent to remove and control the five aquatic invasive species in Lake George, and the expense of preventing these species from becoming established in the first place is far less. Ticonderoga board members agreed it’s not worth taking chances, considering the amount of money involved. ■

Frontier Town Campground officially complete

Camping, RV, hiking, day use, equestrian amenities add luxe to DEC’s newest outdoor camping area STAFF REPORT

NORTH HUDSON | Construction of the new Frontier Town Campground is complete. New trails, tent sites, RV sites and horseback riding amenities are fully operational and open. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the official completion at of the end of June. The new public campground, on the site of the former Frontier Town theme park in the Town of North Hudson, is a signature piece of the Governor’s ‘Gateway to the Adirondacks’ tourism hub. The project cost an estimated total of $25 million in public and private resources. “Generations of New Yorkers remember the Frontier Town theme park as the place their childhood dreams became real, and now with the restoration of this campground, new generations of New Yorkers will get to experience some of that same excitement,” Cuomo said. “North Hudson is a prime location to introduce visitors to all the Adirondack Park has to offer and encourage travelers to further explore New York’s great outdoors.” The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will manage the campground, which was designed in collaboration between the Office of General Services and C.T. Male Associates. The facility has 91 campsites and can accommodate a wide range of visitor experiences. Features of the camping area along the Schroon River include: — An equestrian camping area with 33 sites that have electrical hookups and a pavilion. — An RV and trailer camping area with 13 sites that also have electrical hookups, fireplaces and a shared playground.

Frontier Town Campground is officially open and taking camping reservations. — Tent camping with 45 sites, including three group camping sites; three walk-in camping sites; four sites with electric vehicle charging stations; two shower buildings; a playground; and two pavilions. — A day-use area along the Schroon River with a pavilion, two playgrounds, electric vehicle charging stations and a comfort station. — A network of pedestrian trails take visitors to four vistas on the Schroon River. — The campground features two ADAcompliant horse mounting ramps. “I commend our state and local partners for

bringing this project across the finish line and encourage all New Yorkers to come and enjoy this marvelous new facility,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said of the official opening. The Frontier Town camping, trails and recreation area encompasses approximately 91 acres owned by the Town of North Hudson and Essex County. DEC holds a conservation easement to operate the new facility, which links to Hammond Pond Wild Forest on a four-mile, multi-use trail. Cuomo said a larger network of multi-use and equestrian trails is planned to connect to Frontier Town, including a Schroon Lake-

North Hudson Snowmobile trail network known as the “Ti to Co Line Trail” and a Palmer Pond Bridge connection on the west, leading to parts of the Boreas Ponds Tract and Essex Chain Lakes Complex. The Frontier Town Campground is accepting reservations. Camping Fees start at $25 per night, with a $5 surcharge for out-of-state residents and additional costs for other amenities. The campground is located at 41 Adventure Pass in North Hudson. To call Frontier Town Campground: 518532-9051 ■

A self-guided tour of public and private gardens of Warrensburg starts the day at 10 a.m. and is slated to finish up by 2 p.m. Brief descriptions of the gardens will be given to accompany the tour, and garden docents will be on hand at each location to answer questions. Refreshments will be provided at some locations.Following the tour, noted garden writer, speaker and radio and television personality Charlie Nardozzi will talk about the importance of bees, butterflies, moths and other pollinating insects and animals in the garden, and how their survival is under threat. He will offer advice on how to create a pollinator-friendly garden and landscape by using annuals, perennials and trees and shrubs that provide food, shelter and habitat. A Bee Tea offering sweet and savory treats and light beverages will be served. Pollinator-friendly plants from a local nursery will be available for purchase as well. The garden tour starts at 10 a.m. at the Warrensburgh Museum of Local History, located at 3754 Main St. The pollinator lecture begins at 2 p.m. and is given at the Warren County Fish Hatchery Pavilion, 145 Echo Lake Road in Warrensburg. Tickets purchased prior to the event are $15 and may be purchased at the Warrensburgh Riverfront Farmers Market, Warrensburgh Museum of Local History, Miller Antiques & More and Deadwood Mountain Trading. Tickets purchased on the day of the event are $18. For further information, call 518-4665497 or email taawhalen@yahoo.com. ■

WARRENSBURG | On Saturday, July 20, Warrensburgh Beautification will present two garden events.

To the Editor: This is a letter of thanks and appreciation to Derek Fleury and others in Ticonderoga water department for their efforts in solving a problem for us. Thirty years ago, when our well inexplicably dried up, I got permission to hook up to the village’s (at the time) water system. Over the years, as people built houses around us, they also used this line. We now have five families on it. Unfortunately, the line runs under a small creek. This has led to leaks that have resulted in costly repairs. We were dealing with yet another leak when Derek came up with a solution. He worked long and hard to help us out. The process turned out to be much more complicated than expected. He and Supervisor Giordano worked through the problems with us and got the job done. Once again, I am reminded of the advantages of living in a small town where friends and neighbors help each other. Thanks again to Derek for making this happen. - Doren Rockhill, Ticonderoga ■

Each week we will publish a list of Death Notices at no charge. These notices will include name, date of death & birth, age, town and the name of the funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Like most newspapers, we do need to charge a small fee of $65 for a 250-word obituary which will include a picture (if supplied) in the paper. Larger sizes are also available. If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.
