Honing their safety skills Adk. river guides compete in annual Olympics By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

NORTH CREEK | The annual Adirondack Guide Olympics that challenges the skills of river-rafting guides on the Hudson River was held July 26 — and it featured intense but friendly competition. Most of the events featured in the fifthannual Guide Olympics had esoteric names like Three-to-One Haul, Z-Drag, Live Bait Rescue, Foot Entrapment Rescue and Throwback Toss — but they referred to practical skills that are vital for the rafting guides, enabling them to protect the safety of people taking whitewater rafting trips. Five teams of six guides competed in a series of events over two hours or so in North Creek’s Riverside Park. » Guide olympics Cont. on pg. 7

More funds set for Lake George sewer plant $500,000 secured toward $24 million project By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | Lake George village’s indebtedness for the pending construction of a new $24 million sewer plant is to be reduced by 2.9 percent, after a new joint federal/state grant announced last week is factored into the plant’s financing. On July 25, the offices of U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer and U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik announced a $500,000 grant from the Northern Border Regional Commission toward the wastewater treatment plant’s construction. This new grant, through the Border Commission’s infrastructure investment program, joins the $6.75 million in state and federal money already promised for the plant. During a visit to Lake George in April, Schumer told Lake George officials he’d lobby for some federal funding for the plant, particularly through the Border Commission. Stefanik has also voiced her support for securing additional grant funding. Lake George Mayor Robert Blais said Monday he appreciated the grant.

Warrensburg Town Board members review documents at a recent meeting. At their July meeting, the board awarded a bid to have two scales installed at the town transfer station. Also, they heard about progress on three ongoing infrastructure projects: upgrades at the town sewer treatment plant, development of a new town well and a longawaited sewer system extension up Schroon River Road. Progress on Warrensburg’s infrastructure Test-well drilled By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

WARRENSBURG | Projects to improve Warrensburg’s water supply and sewage treatment have moved forward in July.

At the July meeting of the Warrensburg Town Board, Supervisor Kevin Geraghty announced that a test well on town property near the Echo Lake recreational area has been drilled, and water quality tests are being conducted. If the pending test results indicate purity that meets state standards, the well will be bored out to produce drinking water for municipal water district customers. » Test-well Cont. on pg. 5

been disassembled and restored by a man near Plattsburgh who heard about the intentions to host one in Lake George, and he made the offer to reconstruct it in the park, village Mayor Robert Blais said. July 19, the Warren County Board of Supervisors approved authorizing Elan Planning of Saratoga Springs to prepare an application — at a cost of $4,900 — for a state grant to pay for 75 percent or more of the project’s cost. The village is to pay $1,862 of the cost of the application. The Lake George Village board approved the concept.

toward having one erected. The structure envisioned for the park, however, is not just a replica of one, according to a recent proposal, that would have cost $350,000 to $450,000. It’s an authentic Adirondack fire tower that served the state for 60 years, and the village could obtain it and have it erected for a total of $150,000. Plans now call for Lake George Village to acquire what is believed to be the state’s first steel fire tower, constructed in 1917 near what is now Northway Exit 30, but taken down in 1977. This Sunday, Aug. 4, woodsmen and woodswomen from all over the northeast U.S. and elsewhere will be competing in chopping, sawing and ax-throwing skills. Photo by Thom Randall The lumberjack competition, in which both men and women of the New York State Lumberjacks Association compete, is to be held Sunday from 11 a.m. to about 4 p.m. Local loggers as well as lumberjacks from the northeastern U.S. and Canada are to compete in ax throwing and wood chopping as well as sawing wood with crosscut, chain and bow saws. Children’s activities feature an inflated water slide, an encounter with live reptiles and sessions with aquatic creatures in the nearby creek. Also, local Scouts will be helping others build and race miniature boats. In addition, a variety of children’s games are to be conducted. Family entertainment includes a show at 11:30 a.m. Sat-

urday by The Puppet People. On both Saturday and Sunday, Titus Grondahl will present his wizardry in a show that combines science, wood turning and “steampunk” alchemy. The festival includes its annual car show Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food is to be available from concessionaires and at nearby eateries in town. Live music is to be provided by two bands Saturday — the acclaimed Cari Ray & the Shaky Legs with their alt-blues beginning at 3 p.m., then Big Medicine playing traditional rural music starting at 6 p.m. Stony Creek’s townwide garage sale is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. ■

Brant Lake Canoe Race revived Aug. 17 Kayaks, guideboats, stand-up paddle boards to compete By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

BRANT LAKE | A treasured Brant Lake community tradition is about to be resurrected. The Great Brant Lake Canoe Race is to be held Saturday, Aug. 17, after a hiatus of 40 years or so — and registration, limited to 75 competitors, will soon be reaching its limit. Competitors piloting canoes, kayaks, Adirondack guideboats and stand-up paddle boards are all welcome to enter the competition. The race stems from a collaboration between The Hub cafe/tavern in Brant Lake, the North Warren Chamber of Commerce and avid watersports enthusiasts. Competitors will begin at Hilton Beach off Palisades Road at the north end of the lake and paddle 5.5 miles into the lake’s outlet, finishing at The Hub’s dock, upstream of the Mill Pond bridge. Advance registration can now be accomplished at northwarrencanoe.com. Also, registration — if it doesn’t reach its limit through online signups — is to be held at The

» Sewer funds Cont. from pg. 1 “The maximum award through the Border Commission’s infrastructure program is $500,000 per year for two years maximum,” he said. “We’re glad the grant was awarded to us — the commission’s grant committee must have decided our project was a very high priority, and we’ll be applying for another $500,000 grant next year.” In June, the Lake George Village Board voted to award various contracts to construct the treatment plant, due to an impending deadline imposed by the state to have the plant in operation by August 2021. At that time, Blais said the village would need about $9 million more in grant funding to make the plant affordable to the local taxpayers. At that time, he estimated that the debt would require the village and town to pay at least $566,000 annually for the next 30 years toward the debt — which would increase the village’s property owners’ taxes by 67 percent and sewer fees in the Caldwell Sewer District outside the village by as much as 150 percent. Blais said Monday that he and other Lake George officials would be seeking additional money from the state through their area’s Regional Economic Development Council.

“We’re still hoping that additional funds will be coming from state through the governor’s clean water program,” he said. “Our goal is to reduce our debt to $8 million or $9 million, which is affordable and allow us to stay just under the property tax cap — that continues to be our goal.” Town of Lake George officials have been alarmed by the increase in sewer rates that would have to be charged to property owners over 30 years in the Caldwell Sewer District, which lies outside the village’s boundaries. Alarmed by the pending tax increases, town government officials said in June that without additional grant funding, hotel owners would see astronomical tax increases. They cited Lake George Holiday Inn as an example — that the hotel might have to pay $90,000 more annually in sewer fees — and that $9 million to $10 million more in grant funding was necessary to avoid burdensome tax increases. Talk even surfaced between board members about the town refusing to make payments to the village that are required by a longstanding sewer treatment contract. On Monday, efforts to reach Dickinson were unsuccessful. In Schumer’s press release distributed July 25, the senator said he’d been lobbying for additional grant funding. “Lake George, one of the most breathtaking natural trea-

In the Schumer press statement, Eric Siy of the Fund for Lake George expressed “deep appreciation” for Schumer’s lobbying efforts and the Border Commission’s grant to help fund the new water treatment plant. He said that without a new plant, the lake’s water quality would be significantly degraded over time. “The risks to Lake George’s legendary water quality are real, particularly from harmful algal blooms that are devastating the environment and economies of lakeside communities in New York state and across the country,” Siy said. Initial construction work on the new plant is scheduled to begin within several weeks. ■

She revealed this week what prompted her thoughts. “When we started coming to Brant Lake in the 1970s, we’d sit on our dock and watch the canoes go by,” she said, describing the annual race that lasted for a few years. “We really enjoyed the experience.” Strickland said Sunday that paddlers have welcomed the return of the Great Brant Lake Canoe Race. “We’ve seen a really positive initial response,” he said. Baker family plans 155th reunion Family seeks to learn more about its female ancestry

MALTA | The 155th-annual gathering of the descendants of James Baker will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Malta Community Park. This year’s reunion will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Baker family’s first reunion took place in 1865 in Stillwater in Saratoga County. At the reunion were the 16 sons of Revolutionary War veteran James Baker by James’ first wife, Cornelia Westervelt,

and second wife, Ruth Post. In the early decades of the family’s reunion, men took the lead in maintaining the yearly reunion. By the last century, the tradition changed. Now, women represent the majority of the reunion’s officers and committee members, led by family reunion President Judy Farnan Farago. That group organizes the yearly Baker Family Reunion, maintains the Baker Cemetery in Stillwater, and collects the history of the family. This year, family historian Maria Carr is looking for more stories about the women of the Baker family. “Strong, active Baker women can certainly be traced back to the family’s Quaker roots and beyond,” a press release said. » Test-well Cont. from pg. 1 This new well, which is to join the town’s four existing wells, is expected to boost the capacity and reliability of the district’s water supply. This well would provide water to the north end of the Warrensburg hamlet if an interruption of service occurs in the southern and western areas of the water district. Also, Geraghty announced that the multi-year project to extend sewer service about a mile north on Schroon River Road to Countryside Adult Home is substantially complete. The sewer main has been installed, and procedures to test the integrity of the pipes and their connections is now underway. This process involves pressurizing each 500-feet length of sewer main and monitoring them for leaks over six hours. Geraghty said he didn’t expect problems, and that the sewer service expansion should provide a number of households along Schroon River Road — along with Countryside Home and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren County — with municipal sewer service. Also, the project to build a 300-square-feet addition to Warrensburg’s sewer plant headquarters — and to install new compressor-blowers to aerate the bio-active sewer treatment lagoons — is nearly complete, Geraghty said. The expansion of the plant is to accommodate additional equipment and controls. Geraghty said the new compressors were quieter in operation, and more efficient in treating wastewater than the present treatment equipment. “The work at the wastewater treatment plant is progressing nicely, and should be done by September,” he said. In other business conducted at the meeting, the town board awarded a bid to install two new scales at the town landfill. Scale Service & Supply Company of Rensselaer is to accomplish the work soon. The larger of the two scales is for trucks to have their payloads of trash weighed, and the other is for weighing individual bags of household refuse. The cost of the two scales was $41,653. Purchase and

full installation together cost the town $70,450. After the two scales are installed in about a month, the town will be charging for trash disposal by the pound, with some exceptions, rather than by the bag or truckload. Geraghty said the pending new system was a fairer way to levy charges. Also discussed at the meeting was the fact that maps have been created for the town’s proposed hamlet expansion. Town Planning and Zoning Administrator Patti Corlew drafted the maps. Geraghty said town officials would be meeting July 30 with Adirondack Park Agency staff planner Matt Kendall to review the pending expansion. The action is expected to amend existing arbitrary boundaries, include areas that host water and sewer infrastructure, and top streamline development permitting processes. Also, the town board awarded $8,586 of occupancy tax receipts to Ed Zibro’s Warrensburg Bike Rally for advertising expenses. The rally was already granted $10,000 for that purpose by Warren County from their share of occupancy tax revenue. In other business, the town board decided to purchase a new Western Star tandem dump/plow truck for $226,946. The truck is to be delivered in August. Also, they heard from Geraghty that the town’s expanded series of Wednesday evening concerts at the Floyd Bennett Memorial Bandstand have been well-attended. ■

» Fire tower Cont. from pg. 1 Area tourism officials as well as Lake George town council members support the idea of placing a fire tower in the park, Blais said. “For families, particularly with children, this would be a great attraction,” Blais said when he introduced the idea to village board members at their July meeting. He said that a fire tower would provide a scenic northward view of Lake George and its surroundings, and this authentic one would let people experience, first-hand, a vital aspect of Adirondack history. “It’s a big deal to have a fire tower, because of the Adirondack challenge, board member John Earl said, referring to Adirondack Mountain Club’s “fire tower challenge” award that recognizes those hikers who have climbed at least 18 of the 25 fire towers in the Adirondacks, as well as all five of those in the Catskill Mountains. Town of Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett said Friday he supported the project of siting a fire tower in Charles Wood Park. “This fire tower is ‘the real deal,’ and it would allow both visitors and locals both to experience a bit of Adirondack history,” he said. “How many imaginations will it ignite? How many people climbing the tower in Lake George will then go climb Hurricane Mountain, Swede Mountain or Goodnow Mountain?” ■ COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

Respect and understanding for the rule of law

From New York to California, Iowa to Louisiana, high-profile shootings have robbed America of the By Dan Alexander men and women that • PUBLISHER • have sworn to protect their communities. What seems like daily news reports of officers being shot and ambushed must never become just another daily occurrence and something that we hear so often we become immune to the shock of it. Recently we learned of a new level of disrespect, when individuals were throwing buckets of water on officers when they arrive to do their jobs. A uniform soaked in water in one respect is better than soaked in blood and loss of life, but the overall eff ect still breeds a heightened state of civil unrest. Those who choose to commit these acts have no respect for themselves, our laws and certainly no respect for life nor common decency. We must get to the root issues that cause these events and seek solutions for the good of all. Fear, as we all know, is a powerful motivator, and for those who feel oppressed, perhaps this seems like a way of getting attention or even a noble act, but nothing could be further from the truth. Fear works on both sides of these issues to create doubt and anxiety and only serves to make matters far worse. The world is dangerous enough but these senseless attacks here in this country seem to be more than random or isolated displays of brutality aff ecting not only law enforcement officers, but EMTs firefighters and other public servants, who fearlessly answer the call to duty each day. More deaths nor acts of disrespect will not solve a thing. Until we come together out of mutual understanding, these events will continue to occur, and the more that do will only serve to encourage others to do the same while placing our public servants in the position of overreacting. The cycle needs to be broken and the best place to start is with the disrespect being shown by our nation’s leaders … one and all. The last few years have proven that increased disrespect only brings about a greater level of disrespect and violence. Those who encourage, condone or support it in any way must be made to recognize the negative impact they are creating. We can only hope and pray that understanding, respect and a new appreciation for common decency and moral acceptance begins to infect the hearts and minds of us all as we seek peace and brotherly love for all God’s people. ■

Letters (This letter is in response to Ken Fenimore’s letter, “Retirement Enhancement Act sticks it to our kids,” that ran in the July 27 edition of The Sun.)

Widening the divide

To the Editor: As an actuary who spent most of my career in support of federal pension regulation, I am never comfortable with those who wish to use tax policy to turn much-needed pension provision into estate-building vehicles. My father died at 54 prior to the passage the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), having no vesting in 20+ years of working for the Bell Laboratories. As a result, my mother had to fend for herself. That is why ERISA and similar legislation and regulation created a corporate pension system to supplement social security and protect both workers and their surviving spouses. Mr. Fenimore would like to use tax-advantaged pension plans to build an estate for his heirs. That would have a cost to all taxpayers and one that deserves close scrutiny. Even a national program like social security does not create a pot of money that can later be inherited. Provisions to mandate the expiration of tax advantages over a reasonable time after the death of the pensioner are meant to stress that these are pension funds, not estate-building vehicles. And I would add a comment to Mr. Alexander: I would encourage you to read the history of reconstruction after the Civil War. Every time a city council debates the merits of removing another confederate memorial erected to the “lost cause,” we are still fighting the Civil War. Every time the president and his supporters chant “Send them back,” we are not finding “ways to unite.” Whether or not one believes in reparations to the descendants of past victims of slavery, the discussion itself indicates the extent to which

the causes of the Civil War are still festering sores in our body politic. I agree with you that I would like the “great melting pot” to return, but using racial politics and divisive rhetoric is only widening the divide. — Richard Barney, Ticonderoga ■

Becoming climate smart community

To the Editor: June 6 the City of Plattsburgh Common Council appointed a task force to become a climate smart community focusing on reducing recourses and energy consumption. You can’t be serious? This is the same city that lifted the moratorium on Bitcoin business operations that will drain the city of its electric reserves and force higher rates on its citizens in the process. Not to mention Bitcoin operations originated with criminal operations to hide money and pay for clandestine operations all over the world. Someone is blowing smoke somewhere and getting paid off in the process. I strongly suggest that the people throw out their city council and just hire the mob. The city would get better and faster results. Becoming a climate smart community has to start with honest city officials and an involved public or the local government pats us on the back with one hand and picks our pockets with the other. — Michael Calitri, Peru ■

Trump aims to divide

To the Editor: Donald Trump loves to go to the Carolinas for his rallies, he knows that he can “Gin Up” the southerners with his xenophobic remarks. He knows that they love it, and they will stroke his ego. I wonder if he has the courage to go to New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Jersey or California, and spout off his racism

to see the reception he would receive if he made those same racism taunts in front of those people, I wonder. We know that he wouldn’t dare go to those states for fear of being booed off the stage. That leads to one conclusion, he is president only to his racist base, not to the rest of the United States. In the past 243 years, all past presidents took an oath to join all the citizens of the United States and work for the betterment of all of its citizens. Now we for the first time in our history, we have a president who truly believes that his first priority is to divide our people and favor only the ones who “stroke his ego” and disparage all others. History will prove that Donald Trump is the worst president this country has ever had and that the once respected Republican party will no longer exist. – Joe DeMarco, Jay ■

Miscreants have no respect for flag

To the editor: Memorial Day has come and gone, “D-Day” has come and gone. July 4 just went by. All those days are observed because they yielded us our freedoms, which are not free! Those seven red stripes and those six white stripes are there to remind us that our freedoms came at a cost, not to be forgotten. The same attitude of those miscreants who have desecrated our graveyards by removing personal flags from grave sites is the same attitude that prevails when those businesses allow our flag to be hanging by one clasp, as well as not hanging our flag at all. These flags have been brought to their attention repeatedly, to no avail. May God bless America. — Bob Spring, Ticonderoga ■

» Guide olympics Cont. from pg. 1 The timed competitive events included paddling, rescuing a manned raft stuck in the river, inflating a raft with two hand pumps, tying knots, throwing a bag of rescue rope and dragging a five-ton bus — with people-power and pulleys — more than 30 yards or so. Emory Clark, a four-year guide with Adirondac Rafting Co. of Indian Lake, talked of how the competition kept the guides’ abilities sharp. “Most all the techniques used here are rescue techniques that every raft guide needs to know and be proficient at,” he said, noting that his rafting company has won the Olympics several times over the competition’s five-year history. Clark’s teammate P.J. King expressed appreciation to Peter Morehouse and Stephanie Leonard, organizers of the Olympics. “It’s a really awesome event,” he said. Three-year competitor Elizabeth Zerilli of North River’s Adirondack River Outfitters Team I offered her thoughts about the Olympics. “This is all about teamwork,” she said. “It’s a beautiful, awesome afternoon.” Zerilli’s teammate Nick Sprague, who leads river rafting expeditions nearly every day of the week, said earlier that he was looking forward to the competitive events — as it was his first time participating in the Olympics. “I’m pretty stoked,” Sprague said. Four-year competitor Linc Marsac — an all-star multi-sport athlete in high school who moved to northern Warren County to become a boat builder and co-founder of Square Eddy Expeditions, also remarked on the Olympics. “I always look forward to these events — I always like to get wet,” said Marsac, who off-season serves as Minerva-Newcomb High School’s basketball coach. “Also, the competition keeps our community sharp on all their whitewater safety techniques.”

The way we were

Turning back the pages

The old saying is that everything changes while everything remains the same. I look back at the way we are now and at things as they were 100 years ago and it is almost like the same play but with different actors. “Those that do not study history are destined to repeat it” is surely a sad fact. Back in 1919 there was much strife and bloodshed in our country against black people and Jews, and today there is a hot war between the Republicans and the Democrats. We can only pray for the day that the realization will come that we are one people, all human beings under one flag and work to solve our many problems before they overcome and destroy us.

LOST TO THE AGES

In Warrensburg we are indeed proud of our local hero, aviator Floyd Bennett, a young boy who was born in Virgin Hollow on Truesdale Hill and grew up on Third Street here in town before he went on to glory and died at the young age of 38. I am reminded of the old movie “All the King’s Men,” where the guy says, “Live fast, die young and have a good-looking corpse.” Today Floyd lies in Arlington Nation Cemetery, his name and deeds confined to the history books. Many years ago an elderly lady who lived on Thomson Street told

me that she used to see Floyd every morning when he took the family cow from his aunt and uncle’s house on Third Street up to the town pasture on the “Klondike,” at the mountain overlooking River Street. A hundred years ago, in 1919, just after World War I, Floyd was enlisted in the Navy Aviation program in Air Mechanics at Hampton Roads, Virginia. Assigned to the USS Richmond to participate in catapult testing, he caught the eye of Commodore Richard E. Byrd and they later, in 1926, so the story goes, made the famous 15-and-a-half-hour flight to become the first ever to fly over the North Pole. Their plane was called the “Josephine Ford,” named for automobile mogul Henry Ford’s granddaughter. Today we oft time remember Floyd when we pass our beautiful little bandstand here in town, which was built in 1929 in Floyd Bennett Park, the year after he died in Quebec. I remember him when I look at the little, old patent medicine bottles on the window sill over my kitchen sink that I dug up many years ago when I visited Floyd’s old home in Virgin Hollow.

Henry Ford. Fuel for cars was only sold in drug stores. The average wage, since 1910, was 22 cents an hour, and only 8 percent of homes had a telephone. Many Warrensburgh people worked at the Woolen pants factory on Milton Avenue, on property where I now live, and they were happy to reap that good wage. Ninety percent of doctors did not have a college education, and many were lucky if they graduated from grammar school. They relied upon on the job training. Thought for the day: On May 31, 2019, there was an interesting program on television about Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd. He was said to have been an ardent believer in alien visitors to our planet and believed that there could very well be a danger to earthlings from a future attack by them. He also believed that the Earth was hollow with an entrance in the North Pole and that aliens were stationed there. This all sounds weird and far fetched, but later, as I read his words in his book, a lot of what he said made sense. Either way, it makes good reading. ■

SAME TIME, DIFFERENT YEAR

Conservation Conversations

With the warm weather, stream fishing for trout has come to an end for now. That means it’s time for bass, sunnys, bluegills and other warmwater fishing. I don’t have a boat, so I do other things, By Richard Redman such as cut firewood, make house and vehi• COLUMNIST • cle repairs, and all those other chores while waiting for the waters to cool come fall. The one fishing thing I did this past spring, was attend the Spey Nation event in the Altmar/Pulaski area. The Spey Nation event started in 2008 by Dan Burnside, Dave Lenhard and Geoff Schaake, who simply wanted to get the word out about two-handed Spey and switch rods. With the efforts of these three guys, the tribe is growing. Spey Nation is named for the tribe of folks who like to fish with two-handed fly rods. A typical fly rod is cast using one hand and is usually within six to 10 feet long. Spey rods or switch rods could be 13 feet or more. These long rods give you momentum and heavy power behind the cast, allowing great distances to be covered. Named after the River Spey in the northeast Scotland, twohanded rods were used on the river to increase the casting distance, plus to cover more area from a single spot. American salmon and steel headers are seeing the value in using these

long stiff rods to shoot a large fly out across a long stretch of water, then allowing the fly to float/sink downstream and swing back in the current to hopefully entice a salmon or steelhead. Steelheaders in the Pacific Northwest on rivers like the Klamath, Umpqua, Deschutes and Stillagaumish have been using these rods for years. Eastern rivers like the Salmon, Cattaraugus, the mouth of the Saranac, and Delaware are now drawing fishermen who use these long rods. Held at the Pineville area on the Salmon River, the Spey Nation clan once again did a great job. Numerous rod manufacturers were there displaying their equipment. Orvis, Hardy, Echo, Rio and many others all had displays of rods, reels, line and, of course, flies. How to fish with a Spey rod or switch rod was the main reason for attending. Casting demonstrations were given by top-notch spey rodders. Walt Geryk, the world famous “Spey Doctor,” was there along with numerous other professionals who demonstrated the various long-range casts. The river was high due to a previous night’s storm, so it prevented everyone from getting a personal hands-on experience, but we did get to see the masters demonstrate their skills. “Relax,” “stay in the box,” “keep your eye on the anchor” and “cast inside the fly” were terms showered on us all. It’s a lot easier watching someone cast a 13-foot two-hander than to actually do it. The daylong program raised money for the Fish Creek Atlantic Salmon Hatchery. Raising the native Atlantic salmon is the goal

to stock the once-abundant spawning waters of Fish Creek, the headwaters of the Oneida Lake. Thank you to the Tailwater for hosting the barbecue for this Spey Nation event. The yearly event will be held next year at the Tailwater lodge in Altmar. If you have a hankering to cast a two-fisted rod, hopefully maybe I’ll see you there next June. By then I’ll be able to cast my own, owner-built, 13-foot Spey rod, maybe! With the warm weather we have had, trout streams have reached temperatures where no one should be out fishing them. Warm water holds less oxygen than cold water, and if you catch a trout in warm water, you could be signing its death sentence. Summer is the time to fish for those warmwater species like bass, sunnys, and perch, so go enjoy life. ■ — Rich Redman is a Moriah-based outdoors writer. His column runs monthly. EASTPORT, MAINE | Nancy Randerson Palmer died on April 1, 2019, at the Eastport Memorial Nursing Home after a short illness. She was born April 29, 1925, to Florence (Tremper) and John E. H. Randerson in Diamond Point, New York. She was the eldest of five children to grace their home. Nancy grew up a teacher of her younger siblings, helping them with their studies. She played the piano in church and taught her sister Anneke to play. Nancy went to the Bolton schools and was valedictorian of her class. She was awarded a four-year scholarship to Albany Nursing College but chose to attend Albany State Teachers’ College, earning both B.S. and M.S. degrees. Her choice of career was made when her father tried to drop her at the nursing school, and

Wayne Stock XII to rock North Creek this weekend By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

NORTH CREEK | Wayne Stock, northern Warren County’s premier music festival, returns to North Creek Ski Bowl Park this weekend for its 12th edition — with a strong lineup of 13 bands over two days. Although the fest features free admission, Wayne Stock is the leading fundraiser for the North Country Hardship Fund, a registered nonprofit charity that assists families facing severe medical and financial setbacks. Since 2008, the Hardship Fund has awarded more than $195,000 to needy recipients, according to co-founder Tammy Bukovinsky. Wayne Stock XII is to be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, and from noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, regardless of prevailing weather. “Come enjoy awesome music day and night, plus raffles, food, live and silent auctions, face painting and a whole lot more,” Bukovinsky wrote recently on the Wayne Stock Facebook page. Bukovinsky launched Wayne Stock along with her husband, Wayne Bukovinsky, and their many friends after Wayne suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle crash in 2008. In succeeding years, the couple decided to keep the

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Vinnie Leddick has been a featured performer at Wayne Stock, northern Warren County’s premier music festival. This year’s edition of the music festival that raises money for families facing hardships is to be held Friday, Aug. 2, and Saturday, Aug. 3 — and 13 bands are featured. Photo provided

Noted rock and ballad singer Margo Macero, also accomplished on guitar, is slated to perform at the two-day music festival Wayne Stock XII, to be held Friday, Aug. 2, and Saturday, Aug. 3, at the North Creek Ski Bowl Park. festival going and donate the festival’s proceeds to other families facing severe hardships. In prior years, as many as 800 people have attended the festival. Wayne Stock raises money by hosting raffles and auctions — and the bands generally donate their services. This year’s Wayne Stock features a beer concession. Attendees are welcome to bring their own beverages, according to Tammy Bukovinsky. Glass bottles are prohibited, as are pets and obstinate attitudes, as stated on the Wayne Stock Facebook page. People are urged to bring a lawn chair as well as clothing suitable for unpredictable weather. Musical entertainment Friday evening features a roster of singer-songwriters, beginning with Alex Smith at 6 p.m., followed by Dan Singer and Margo Macero each with one-hour sets, and ending with S.L. Smith from 10 to 11 p.m. Saturday features live music beginning at 1:20 p.m. alternating through the day with 20-minute raffles and auctions of donated goods or gift certificates. Bands slated to perform, in order of appearance, are TnT, Slack Dawg, Cryin Shamz, 4WD, Finger Diddle, Road Dawgs and Beating the Odds. The Saturday performances end with Against the Grayne, scheduled for 9:50 to 11 p.m. ■
