Town of Chester candidates to face voters in upcoming event
Lamouree exits race for Warren County sheriff post

CHESTERTOWN | Candidates for town of Chester government positions will soon be sharing their qualifications, vision of the municipality’s future, and objectives, with the public. A Meet the Candidates event has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday Aug. 24 in the town of Chester Municipal Center auditorium. The event, sponsored by the Loon Lake Park District Association, is being held for voters to hear presentations from the candidates competing in the November general election for town posts. The candidates slated to appear on the ballot have been invited to participate. Running for the post of town supervisor are incumbent Craig Leggett on the Democratic and Independence Party lines, and challenger John S. Maday, re pre s e nt i ng t he R e p ubl ic a n a nd Conservative parties. Three candidates are competing for two open positions on the town of Chester board: incumbent Mike Packer, Republican; Bernard T. “Bernie” McCann, Democrat; and Chris Aiken, Republican. All positions bear four-year terms. Mindy Conway, incumbent Town Clerk, is unchallenged for re-election. John Nick, president of the Loon Lake association, is scheduled to be the moderator of the event. ■

QUEENSBURY | Warren County Undersheriff Shawn Lamouree has decided to discontinue his campaign for county sheriff, and take an executive position in private enterprise. On Aug. 9, Lamouree announced his intention to retire from his post as second-in-command in the county Sheriff ’s Department and pursue a new career as an executive in a business related to firearms. Lamouree has worked in the Sheriff ’s office since 1988, and has served as
his executive post with Capital Gun Group, he would be seeking to grow the business that now operates in 11 or so locations. Lamouree talked about the primary vote outcome. “It’s tough to politic while working 55 hours per week and take care of family responsibilities at the same time,” he said. “In the end, this worked out well for me and my family — I consider myself very fortunate to be able to parlay the skills I acquired during my career with the sheriff ’s office into this new post in the private sector.” See SHERIFF » pg. 3

Kaena will be joined in the show by two guest artists: Kumu Hoku, considered a master of the ancient version of traditional Hawaiian dancing; and Joe Camocaho, a noted singer-songwriter — both are from Hawaii. After Charlie Wood recruited Kaena to move to Lake George decades ago to anchor the entertainment in the Tiki’s Tahitian Lounge, she bought two houses in Warrensburg in 1970 and thereafter invested her spare time in the hamlet’s preservation and revitalization. She is among the half-dozen founders of Warrensburgh Beautification, who together successfully lobbied federal officials to list various properties and districts in town on the National Register of Historic Places. Also, she and Teresa Whalen, Florence Carrington, Jane LeCount and other Beautification initiators established public gardens, a riverside park, a local farmers’ market, and a community garden — as well as beautifying town properties with floral plantings. In recent decades, she’s been a part-year resident of Hawaii, pursuing work there in preserving not only the environment, but the traditional culture. She also advocates for native rights. Over her career that spans more than a generation, she’s performed in Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Acapulco, Finland, Germany and elsewhere in Europe — as well as locally in Schenectady, Galway and at Marylou Whitney’s estate. Most recently, she performed her show for a week-long engagement this June in Las Vegas at the Orleans Hotel. This last week, she talked about how she’s maintained this pace for decades. “It’s a major achievement when you can retain the spirit of youth and do everything without the fear of not being able to accomplish something,” she said. “I dream about what I want my life to be, and I make it happen.” The Aug. 24 show at the Wood Theater begins at 7:30 p.m.. Lamouree said he has $5,000 or so left over in his campaign contributions, which he plans to donate to the Sgt. Brett Flaherty memorial scholarship offered at Queensbury High School, granted annually to a graduating student pursuing studies in Criminal Justice. “Brett was well respected in the agency,” Lamouree said of Flaherty, a county Sheriff’s Officer, who died in 2016. “I wanted to see the money do some good.” Lamouree said he plans on taking on the position with Capital Gun Group within the next few months, during which he will work with county Sheriff Bud York assisting LaFarr in his transition into the sheriff’s position. “There’s no ‘ill will’ between me and my opponent,” Lamouree said. “I’ll certainly assist him in learning the duties and responsibilities he is about to undertake.” LaFarr said Friday he was “surprised” to learn about Lamouree dropping out of the

race, but the earlier and longer transition period will benefit the public by allowing him to “hit the ground running” when takes office in January. “Shawn has ton of experience and you can’t replace that,” LaFarr said of Lamouree and the transition. Sheriff York praised Lamouree for his public service over 31 years with the county Sheriff’s office, particularly his administrative expertise and achievements. “The county is going to miss his considerable abilities, accomplishments and good work,” he said. Town of Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett, who serves as the chairman of the county’s Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, also offered his thoughts. “Shawn is very professional, knowledgable and has always been very skilled at obtaining grant funding,” Leggett said, noting how Lamouree has boosted dispatch

communications technology, established the county’s school resource officer program, oversaw the county’s $24.8 million annual budget, and wrote grants for the sheriff’s department. He also managed the office’s vehicle fleet, police union negotiations and emergency response team. Over his tenure as Undersheriff, Lamouree has obtained about $4.7 million in state and federal grants. Leggett said Lamouree set high standards for the sheriff’s officers, advocated thorough training for personnel, and was detail-oriented. “He believed in keeping everyone highly skilled,” Leggett said. Lamouree, 52, joined the county Sheriff’s Office in 1988 at the age of 21 — less than a week after graduating from SUNY Brockport — and has continued his service with Warren County ever since. He started out as a road patrol officer, worked his way up through the ranks, and has been the Undersheriff since 2012.

Prior to his undersheriff post, he held supervisory roles for nine years, including heading up the county scuba diving team which played a key role in rescue and recovery operations during the 2005 Ethan Allen tragedy — when the tour boat capsized on Lake George. Asked to identify his chief accomplishment during his administrative tenure, Lamorouee said it was “maintaining the high level of professionalism” the county Sheriff’s Office is renowned for. “I believe in leading by example,” he said. “I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished in 31 years.” LaFarr said he plans to continue to circulate through the county before the November election, and meet local residents, as well as attend many public events. “I’ll be going out knocking on doors, introducing myself to as many people as I can,” he said. ■

My constituents in the North Country are increasingly concerned about the cost of health care – and with good reason. A growing number of Americans are delaying or even avoiding needed care for themselves or family members because they are worried about surprise medical bills, prescription drug prices or uncertainty about what their insurance may cover. That is why my work in Congress has focused on common-sense solutions that aim to lower health-care costs and expand quality and accessible care for North Country families, veterans and military families. People need access to quality health care. Whether they have a minor ailment or chronic illness, a doctor should be within a reasonable travel distance and offer services that are easy to navigate on a regular basis and affordable for their family’s budget. Local community health centers, which have been around for more than 50 years, are a tried and true solution. They can be found in thousands of rural and urban neighborhoods all across America, and throughout the North Country. The care a community health center offers is both affordable and effective at helping people manage health conditions that, if left unchecked, would force them to seek costlier care at a hospital emergency room. Health centers not only treat illnesses, they also reach beyond the conventional medical chart to address and prevent the underlying factors that can make people sick

Congress will never cut spending
To the Editor: Clearly Richard Barney of Ticonderoga has mistaken me for someone else. I have not been building an IRA estate for my heirs, therefore cheating other taxpayers. I hope to be able to leave something for my children, but it remains only a possibility and it will never be considered a built-up estate. Since it’s taken me 30+ years to accumulate my pittance, I’m offended that the government now changes the rules regarding withdrawals via the Secure Act. Pretax IRA distributions are taxed at normal rates, but the government wants to maximize those tax rates by causing larger, shorter term, distributions. While it is true that some wealthy people have used IRA’s to create estate plans for their heirs, they did so while understanding the longstanding government rules. The government is now changing those rules for everybody, not just those wealthy. Congress has bid up the budget once again as we approach trillion-dollar deficits. Nancy Pelosi bragged about getting more spending in the latest budget than the Republicans, yet has no revenue stream to pay for more spending. Congress seeks more cash because they are never going to cut spending, ever. The astonishing amount of borrowing will continue until it falls apart, which it will. We

The borrowing is bad now, but wait until the butchers bill comes for free college, free health care and drivers licenses for illegal aliens, forgiveness of student loans, reparations and giving more billions to the U.N. for pretending to change climate. Congress overspends its budget by $100 million every hour of every day and borrows to do so. concludes that avoiding wholesale starvation and mass migrations requires fundamental changes in current animal agriculture and land management practices, which account for 23 percent of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. The conclusions of the IPCC report match closely those by Oxford University in 2017 and by Chatham House in 2015. A 2010 United Nations report blames animal agriculture for 19 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, 70 percent of freshwater use and 38 percent of land use. All reports recommend a massive shift to plant-based eating. In an environmentally sustainable world, meat and dairy products in our diet must be replaced by vegetables, fruits and grains, just as fossil fuels are replaced by wind, solar and other pollution-free energy sources. I have been fortunate to visit with many of the people who work at health centers in my district – Hudson Headwaters, North Country Family Health and the Community Health Center of North Country – which collectively provide more than 95,000 people in North Country with critical health services. Their work as problem-solvers in public health – whether it is bringing needed dental services to children in schools or addressing the opioid epidemic with innovative treatments to break the cycle of addiction – has made a local, life-saving impact. I’m proud to work across the aisle with my colleagues in Congress to extend critical funding for health centers before it expires on Sept. 30. Legislation I introduced, “The Community Health Investment, Modernization and Excellence (CHIME) Act,” has laid the groundwork to stabilize funding for health centers so they can continue to build the workforce, facilities and services to reach more people. There is bipartisan agreement that a long-term funding extension will not only improve health care for families but also deliver health-care cost savings to American taxpayers. I was honored to be awarded a 2019 Distinguished Community Health Champion Award from the National Association of Community Health Centers in March of this year for my advocacy of quality and affordable health care access in rural communities. We must not only support health-care solutions with proven results, but invest in them. That’s what I’ll continue to do at the federal level. The well-being of our communities depends on it. ■

By Dan Alexander Last week’s column about the recent shootings in El Paso and Dayton received a fair amount of commentary this week. It seems the column struck a nerve on both sides of the aisle, but not for reasons you may think. I did not get drafted to write a weekly column because I am highly opinionated and needed an outlet for my thoughts, although some of our readers believe that. I began writing because I saw too many people, even within our staff, who wanted to draft opinion pieces anonymously and be shielded from a public response and personal attacks. The anonymous approach may be popular on the internet, and with social media, but it doesn’t help us to foster a respectful dialogue over issues of great importance. A democracy such as ours can’t properly function in that manner, and it may well be a key reason why little has been accomplished to draft legislation to address these random shootings. We must retain the ability to be open-minded toward issues and not be bullied or influenced by threats of violence when our opinions differ. What concerns me in our political process today is we’ve lost touch with the ability to debate the issues without trying to degrade, insult or threaten the person who wishes to stand up and share their thoughts. Last week’s column solicited some rebuttal from both sides, but in every case, the writer made it clear the comments were for my eyes only and not for publication. Few offered any valid points to uphold their belief and instead chose to point out how far out of touch I am on issues of importance. I’m a big boy and have been in the public eye for many years, as such, I’m thickskinned enough to understand both the low blows and the high praise while not taking any of it too seriously. The goal here is to stimulate discussion, but I also see and hear far too many who are intimidated and afraid to speak up because of the threatening nature of our disagreements these days. Look no further than those picketing outside Republican Senate Leader McConnell’s home last week demanding action on gun legislation. The disputes are not waged with words alone, but now with boycotts, firings, doxing and economic threats. You and I both know, sooner or later, it will devolve into violence. We are a community, a country and a world with many differing beliefs. We all need to accept and respect our differences while trying to live our short lives here on this planet. If we can not do so, the future will indeed continue to be a rocky one. ■

HR 8, passed by the House this year, is a bill that requires background checks on the transfer of firearms. Our Congresswoman, Elise Stefanik, voted “No” along with all but eight Republicans. I knew Ms. Stefanik was “A” rated by the National Rifle Association, which also contributes to her campaign. But I also know she can occasionally be objective so I called Ms. Stefanik’s office and asked why she objected to the bill. I didn’t receive a reply. The NRA opposed HR 8, and they have a valid point — it’s unlikely it would prevent most mass shootings. But HR 8 was a modest attempt to curb gun violence by closing the gun show loophole. In most states, if you fail a background check at a gun store you can buy the same weapons at a gun show, which are exempt from background checks. The Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, unilaterally decided not to schedule a vote on it. He killed it. Coincidentally, the NRA contributed over a million dollars to Sen. McConnell’s campaign. This isn’t a democratic republic when one man controls the legislative agenda to implement minority rule. — Frank Pagano, Jay ■
A constitutional ‘refresher course’
To the Editor: Seems Mr. Maddix of Plattsburgh was being disingenuous, intentionally or unintentionally, about the preamble to our Constitution. Allow me to give him a refresher course. It states, “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” Did you catch that? We the people of the United States (meaning citizens of this country and no other), establish Justice (within the laws of the U.S.), insure domestic tranquility (so people/nations are prevented from causing upheavel or attacks upon our land), and to provide for the common defence (our government’s No. 1 duty is to protect all of its citizens), promote the general Welfare (for the benefit of American citizens alone), to ensure the Blessings of Liberty (which are precious to all of us) and Posterity (so that all succeeding generations of Americans have the same God-given rights). From the very beginning our Founding Fathers compelled us to “form a more perfect union.” The pursuit continues every day, but there are many who want to change it radically and not for the good. — John P. One hundred years ago – August 1919: crime going on unsolved By Jean Hadden CORRESPONDENT
Post office inspectors, who for the past three years have been trying without apparent success to fasten upon H. Bernard Hawley, Lake George, the crime of stealing a registered mail pouch containing $22,500 in currency from a Hudson Valley trolley car, between the Lake George post office and French Mountain on the evening of Aug. 22, 1916, have now taken another tack. They are marshaling evidence against a man named George Fuller, who was in Lake George for several weeks during the summer of 1916 and disappeared soon after the robbery took place. A United States marshal was in Lake George recently and subpoenas were served on about a dozen residents. Several inspectors have been active in the case for many weeks. George Fuller, 60, and his much younger wife, a semi-invalid, rented a house on Schuyler Heights, Lake George. The $22,500 in currency was contained in a registered mail package and Wilmer McKinney, the conductor, missed the mail pouch when the car reached French Mountain and the mystery has never been solved.
TRAGEDY AT LOON LAKE
Walter J. McMannis, the 19-year-old son of Peter McMannis of Brooklyn, was drowned Sunday afternoon, Aug. 3, 1919, while bathing in Loon Lake. The young
man, with his younger brother Harold, and several friends, all of Brooklyn, were spending two weeks vacation at his uncle James McMannis’s camp. After dinner the boys donned their bathing suits and no one knew that Walter did not know how to swim. He jumped in and disappeared. When he did not appear his friends became alarmed and his body was soon found and all efforts to resuscitate the young man were in vain. The boy is survived by his mother, two brothers and four sisters.

Gasper Eddy and Harry Boardman have arrived home to Stony Creek from their duty overseas. They were given a joyous welcome by their family and friends. On Saturday, Aug. 2, 1919, a son was born to Mrs. Fletcher Dunkley, in Bakers Mills. Roy Dunkley, of Bakers Mills, went to Warrensburgh recently to assist Dick Baker in training horses there on the fairground track. Charles Dalaba has bought Mrs. Nathan Ingraham’s house and lot in North Thurman. L.L. Maxim badly injured his left hand in Thomas Bolton’s sawmill near the Warrensburgh County Home and he had a narrow escape from losing the member. A large truck load of men passed through North Thurman Saturday afternoon, Aug. 2, 1919, on their way to Crane Mountain in North Thurman after blueberries. They had camping equipment and on Sunday they

Keene was the Thurman correspondent for the Warrensburg-Lake George News from the mid-1990s through the late 1980s, then continued her reporting work for the Adirondack Journal through about 1995. Barbara Primrose Joy Blackburn was born April 19, 1929 in Chelmsford, England. As a teenager, she was pursuing a career in nursing when she met her future husband, George O. Keene, a U.S. Army staff sergeant from Warrensburg. The story of their wartime courtship is related in the book “We Were There” by Dr. Daniel Way, her family physician. Following the war, at the age of 18, Barbara married George Keene in 1947 and they moved to Thurman. They initially lived on a primitive homestead, moving
remained overnight on the mountain. The young people had a dance on Tuesday night, Aug. 5, 1919, in Music Hall, the first of the season. The attendance was not large and young men were greatly in minority. (Note – Music Hall was next door north of today’s Walgreens Pharmacy.)

I received a nice telephone call this week from Richard Stewart of Peaceful Valley, North Creek. What wonderful history tales that gentlemen can tell! He is one of the few local people that today are living in the house where they were born. Last week I wrote about 1919 airplane rides at the Warren County Fair. Richard remembered speaking with the late Frank Lillibridge, a man we both knew well. Frank told him about the time he went up in a plane during this same event and said that it was the thrill of a lifetime. He paid the sum of 50 cents, a lot of money for a young boy in those days, for this wonderful experience. Richard recently wrote a letter to the editor in a local paper about the recent last Democratic “debate” on TV, which he said was more like a showcase for insults than a scholarly debate. I couldn’t agree more! Barbara considered herself an Adirondack woman, and had a particular interest in Native American culture, according to family members and friends. Besides her newspaper reporting, Barbara served hr community as a dispatcher for the Thurman Volunteer Fire Co. and was a member of the Auxiliary. She attended both the Thurman Baptist and Kenyontown Methodist churches. She was also known for her recounting tales of her childhood in England, as well as reaching out to her neighbors who were facing difficulties. For years, Barbara and George camped and traveled, including several trips to England to visit friends and family. George Keene died in August 2005, and they leave
behind their six children, 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service is be held this fall, and she is to be buried in the Reynolds Cemetery in Thurman beside her husband. In the website’s guest book, Dr. Way offered these thoughts: “Barb was one of the smartest people I have ever met; a great story teller, amazingly adaptable, and she had a heart of gold.” Way added that she was a great historian, sharing “her unique life story,” as well as a “valuable and dedicated member” of the Thurman community. “I will always remember her fondly as a Real Adirondacker,” he wrote. ■

The theater is located at 13 W. Main St. in Indian Lake. The event is part of the Theater’s Fantastic Films Series which is made possible with the funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the arts with the support of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts. The documentary, “All Things Bakelite: The Age of Plastic” by John Maher, is a provocative story about the “father of modern plastics.” Belgian-born chemist and inventor Leo Hendrik Baekeland. Baekeland invented Velox photographic paper as well as the world’s first moldable plastic which has been used for
everything from jewelry to communications equipment. Baekeland’s 1907 invention ushered in an explosion of new man-made materials that marked the beginnings of our modern industrial age, and changed our way of life. What is less known is that Baekeland had a major connection to and fondness for the Adirondacks. In the early part of the 20th Century, the Adirondacks was the ultimate getaway for Leo Baekeland. He and his son, George, hunted and fished from a cabin located on Bear Brook, which runs north/south between Raquette Lake and Blue Mountain Lake. “All Things Bakelite: The Age of Plastic” is for all audiences interested in the human drama that underlies history, science, business, and art—and the surprising insight that the nature of plastic reveals the nature of people. The film is currently being shown on public television broadcasting stations across the country. ■

The fight for women’s suffrage is generally characterized as an ongoing battle that lasted 70 years, with a brief hiatus during the Civil War. Western territories began allowing women to vote, beginning with Wyoming in 1869. New York had a shot at being the first state east of the Mississippi to pass women’s suffrage, but the measure was defeated in 1915, with only 43 percent of the population being in favor, and the distinction went to Illinois. Both Clinton and Essex counties were strongly opposed, Nerska said. But things were beginning to change. Newspapers that had been hostile, or poked fun at, the women’s movement began to show support. “Newspapers are now critical of the antisuffrage vote,” Nerska said. The North Country was home to a number of heroic women who led the fight, including Hannah Straight Lansing, who became editor of the Plattsburgh Sentinel, fighting for rights she herself would never enjoy. “Like many suffragists of her generation, she died before getting the right to vote,” Nerska said. The movement was also helped locally by appearances by titans of the movement, such as Susan B. Anthony, Anna Dickenson and

KEENE VALLEY | Better than a century ago, a merchant in Plattsburgh took out an advertisement in the paper, using copy that must have seemed hilarious at the time. The ad posited that if women were as excited about voting as they were about shopping at this particular store, they’d have had the ballot by now. But seriously. Helen Allen Nerska, director of the Clinton County Historical Association, speaking to a gathering at the Keene Valley Library last week, said the ad demonstrated the degree to which women’s suffrage was on the minds of North Country residents as states and the nation lurched toward equal voting rights. Articles show that as the debate heated up, there were many clubs, meetings and visits from prominent suffragists in Clinton and Essex counties, Nerska said. This is the 100th anniversary of passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the

Suffragists were characterized by a local bishop as “howling dervishes” out to poison the minds of young girls. The vote, others wrote, would cause women to lose their ability to keep house. And, alluding to the black vote, newspapers argued that the number of “corrupt and ignorant” voters had already been doubled, and that the country shouldn’t make the same mistake twice. The movement got one last big push when Pres. Woodrow Wilson, in exchange for women’s support of World War I, announced that women should have the right to vote. New York did indeed allow women to vote in 1917. This time Clinton County still voted no, but Essex County, by 15 votes, said yes. ■

In 1876, one paper writing on women’s suffrage, said the messenger was persuasive, but as for the right to vote, “afraid not.” “It was very similar to what you might say to a child asking for a second piece of candy,” Nerska said.

Advertisers made fun of the movement, as did cartoonists, who drew professionally dressed women striding purposefully through the living room while the husband timidly huddled in the background with the kids. Anti-suffrage clubs tried to make men — who of course would be the ones to vote — feel as if they were losing their authority.

WARRENSBURG | Although Warrensburg High school has merged its soccer, football, volleyball and cross-country programs with neighboring schools — primarily Bolton Central — Warrensburg’s field hockey team is to remain as a standalone squad, at least for this year. Warrensburg Central Athletic Director Scott Smith announced recently that Warrensburg’s field hockey team was going to compete this season without its roster being augmented by athletes from North Warren or another area school. “We reached out for potential mergers to several schools, but it just didn’t work out,” he said. “Hopefully we have enough players from our school to compete.” Last year, Warrensburg’s field hockey fans heard that the school’s administration had reached out to North Warren for a potential merger — and Burgher field hockey coach Teresa Colvin advised players and fans last year that their 2018 season was likely their last as an independent squad — but the proposed merger was never consummated.

KENDALL, N.Y. | James G. Riley, 49, of Kendall, N.Y., passed away July 3 at Rochester General Hospital a f ter a br ief illness. Bor n on May 1 4, 1970, in Albany, N.Y. Jim was the son of the late Joan and Alfred “Mike” Riley. Jim was 6 months old when his family moved to Indian Lake. He was a 1989 graduate of Indian Lake Central School. After the deaths of his parents, Jim moved to Rochester, N.Y. He married Jackie Sprague and had three children. In addition to Jim’s parents, he was predeceased by his daughter Shelby Riley, his sister Joanne Hall, and brother John Riley. Riley and his wife Roby, Alfred “Mickey” Riley, two sisters, Donna Husson and her husband, Rick Husson, and Kelly Gallagher; several nieces and nephews, including a very special “more like a brother” nephew, Alfred “Skip” Riley and his wife, Cindy. Jim was employed by Myers RV Superstore of Rochester, N.Y., for several years. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with his dog Willow, camping with his friends, spending time in the backyard by the pool with Sherri, who he affectionately called “Wifey.” He especially enjoyed watching the cardinals and feeding the deer. Jim enjoyed family gatherings and parties, and many times was the life of the party. In honor of Jim’s request, there were no formal calling hours. However, the family will be having a small memorial service in Jim’s honor at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Indian Lake, N.Y., on August 24 at 1:30 p.m. Following the service, family and friends will gather at the American Legion for a celebration of Jim’s life. There will be a private burial. ■

experiences competing in the sport. Smith predicted that the 2019 BurgherEagle volleyball team will have a turnaround season. While the Burghers’ football merger with Bolton only exists on paper, the five-year-old amalgamation of both the boys and girls soccer teams of Bolton and Warrensburg has been very successful, with the squads populated about 50-50 with athletes from each school. Their winning ways are expected to continue this year, particularly with the girls team, which in both 2014 and 2016 fought their way into the state semifinals. “The Bolton-Warrensburg girls soccer squad returns a ton of talent for 2019,” Smith said. “They are going to have a very strong season.” The 2019 combined boys soccer team was a Section II quarterfinalist. The Warrensburg-Bolton crosscountry team, which experienced a solid season for 2019, also remains merged for 2019. Warrensburg’s golf team, however, remains independent, and Matt Bruce will continue as the varsity coach. ■

Smith said this week that the 2019 Burgher field hockey team is loaded with talent, despite graduating key players in June. “We lost a lot of talent to graduation, but we have a great core of solid returners,” Smith said, mentioning players including offensive threat senior Abigail Ranous; All-State awardee Sara Langworthy, a junior; and Bella DeAmelia, a senior. This year, Warrensburg’s football team took on a second partner — North Warren — after officially merging with Bolton Central several years ago. Although no Eagles have joined the Burghers for two seasons, a halfdozen or more North Warren athletes are expected to play alongside their Warrensburg counterparts this year. Also, several Bolton athletes are joining the Burgher volleyball team, which has endured seasons with very few wins over the past 15 years or so. Smith said that volleyball coach Davida Haynes, backed up by assistant coaches John Burns, Christine Baker and Tressa Cintora, will be providing intensive skill development to supplement the players’ off-season
