Senior center envisioned for Town of Chester I Citizens group forming to explore options By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
CHESTER | A movement is now underway to establish a senior center in Chestertown
that will offer a variety of activities geared for area residents in their 60s and older.
Craig Leggett said last week that Linda Muench has been working toward the initiative for some time, and that Ava Ashendorff proposed to the town board at their July meeting to establish a senior center. Ashendorff has stepped for ward to chair the steering committee to found the group, Leggett said.
An initial meeting of the group is to be held in late August, and one of their fi rst decisions to be made is whether the group will encompass Horicon — as so many of the activities in the region are already joint efforts of the two towns.
Leggett said that the board heard requests to locate the proposed senior center at the town of Chester Municipal Center, but town officials suggested that
programming and group organization occur first before space is allocated. A spare room on the second floor of the municipal center has been envisioned as a prospective home base for the group, as town mealsite, the town library, the Chester Wellness Center and other community service groups and located in the municipal center. Lake George Village Wastewater Treatment Plant chief operator Tim Shudt views digital readouts of operations at the village’s sewer plant on Aug. 27. The facility is due to be replaced by fall 2021 with a treatment plant utilizing higher technology — and construction on the $24 million project is to begin this week. Village board members heard Aug. 19 that the plant will cost $248,960 more than they expected just a month ago — due to a compressed construction schedule which calls for contractors to work through two winter seasons in order to meet a state-mandated deadline.

Johnsburg’s ‘History Days’ set for next weekend By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
NORTH CREEK | A graveyard walk, a radio re-enactment of a stagecoach robbery and a presentation of personalities from the past are featured in the fourth annual Johnsburg History Days celebration, set primarily for Friday Sept. 6 through Sunday Sept. 8.
Many decades ago, a stagecoach pauses at a stop in the hamlet of Riverside, now known as Riparius, presumably before it heads off to North Creek or elsewhere in northern Warren County. Johnsburg’s upcoming History Days, set for Sept. 6 through Sept. 8, includes a radio play of ‘The Great Stagecoach Robbery’ occurring in 1901. The re-enactment of this famous crime is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday Sept. 8 at North Creek’s Tannery Pond Community Center. Courtesy photo

Oktoberfest event in Pottersville to benefit
SonRise Lutheran and Christ Episcopal churches sponsor German-themed event Sept. 6 By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
POTTERSVILLE | Two congregations located in northern Warren County are jointly sponsoring their popular German-themed festival soon, and proceeds of the event are to be donated to the congregation of Schroon Lake Community Church to rebuild their sanctuary which was destroyed by fire in January. SonRise Lutheran Church and Christ Episcopal Church, both of Pottersville, are holding their annual Oktoberfest from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday Sept. 6 at their joint sanctuary at 7996 state Route 9 — and the event features German food, beer, music, and decorations. Bavarian attire is welcome. There is no charge to attend, but free-will donations are gladly accepted. Proceeds of the event — up to $2,000 — will be matched by the SonRise congregation, according to pastor Bruce Rudolf. Reservations are required — people planning to attend should contact Doris Wildermuth at 518-494-4425 or billanddorisw@aol.com; or call Rudolf at 772-321-8692. The 80 to 100 people attending Oktoberfest held by SonRise Lutheran and Christ Episcopal churches in Pottersville annually donate thousands of dollars for vital charities. This year, the event’s free-will donations will be matched by the two congregations, then donated to Schroon Lake Community Church — toward rebuilding their sanctuary, destroyed by fire in January. In recent years, the festival has aided several different families dealing with cancer and a family who lost their home in a fire, as well as supplying local food pantries.

Schroon Lake church’s recovery from fire Proceeds from the 2017 edition of their Oktoberfest provided start-up funding for the Pottersville Food Pantry, operated by North Country Ministry. For the past two years, this pantry as been attending to the nutritional needs of dozens of local families.
The churches’ Oktoberfest — annually attracting up to 100 people — will be held rain or shine, as the Chestertown Fire Department has loaned the two churches a large open tent for the event. In past years, the festival has included German sausages, chicken, sauerkraut and traditional Bavarian dishes, as well as beer and wine. The food and beverages have traditionally been provided by members and friends of the two congregations. Area businesses also donate supplies or cash.
The SonRise and Christ Episcopal congregations have empathy for displaced worshippers — in 2015, SonRise lost their place of worship when the camp where they gathered was sold — and Christ Episcopal parishioners invited them to use their facilities for services. In 2006, Christ Episcopal Church itself was destroyed by fire, and rebuilt thereafter. Police determined the blaze was due to arson.
Sunday, Schroon Lake Community Church pastor Lynnette Cole said that on behalf of her congregation, she deeply appreciated the gesture of this fundraiser by SonRise and Christ Espiscopal congregations.
The fourth anniversary of Christ Episcopal reaching out to the SonRise congregation by sharing their sanctuary was celebrated about two months ago with the SonRise congregation presenting an ambry, which holds communion elements, to Christ Episcopal church in appreciation of their generosity. This container, crafted for the Chestertown Roman Catholic priory which closed last year, was purchased by SonRise.
“We couldn’t be more honored by the outpouring of support and love from this incredible town,” she said of the two Pottersville congregations. “People are thinking about what gifts, talents and abilities they have — and finding a way to turn it into a fundraiser to invest into the beautiful future God has in store for us as a church, congregation and town.”
Stephen and Karen Ehlers serve as greeters at a recent year’s Oktoberfest event co-sponsored by SonRise Lutheran and Christ Episcopal churches in Pottersville. Free-will donations from the 2019 edition of this Oktoberfest will be doubled by the two churches’ parishioners, then donated toward rebuilding the Schroon Lake Community Church’s sanctuary, destroyed by fire in January. Courtesy photo
North Hudson Town Supervisor Stephanie DeZalia also expressed appreciation to the Potterrsville churches. She was baptized, confirmed, taught Sunday school and married her late husband in Schroon Lake Community Church. “The devasation brought on by the Jan. 2 fi re rocked our whole community far and wide,” she said, calling the gesture of the donation “wonderful” in an email. “This is exactly what our communities are all about — We are one people.” ■

* The Chester Municipal Center is under consideration as the location for a new senior center — which could offer a variety of daily activities for those 60 and older — because the building already hosts a variety of services for area residents and visitors. A group of local citizens have formed a steering committee to share and pursue ideas for programming for a senior center, as town officials advised that programs should be explored and developed before space in the municipal center is committed to the initiative. Photo by Thom Randall From SENIOR CENTER » pg. 1
In the meantime, the steering committee for the senior group may meet in the Chester Municipal Center auditorium or Dynamite Hill Lodge, Leggett said, noting that if the group’s initial activities draw a robust number of people, that he will be seeking grant funding to renovate a room at the municipal center as their headquarters. He added that he had visited the Luzerne Senior Center, located in the Lake Luzerne town hall, and that many people over 60 were busy with a variety of activities, and they appeared to be enjoying socializing, games and other pursuits. Meunch said this week that the seniors group would likely host informative programs, craft sessions, blood pressure clinics, as well as host speakers on health, wellness and financial topics. Most prominently, however, would be regularly schedule social get-togethers for sharing memories, news and perhaps card games. “We are looking to appeal to a lot of people,” she said. “Many area residents are just alone and would enjoy company.” ■

Mayor Blais eyes new food truck festival for village By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | Move over, Nashville, Tennessee; Upqua, Oregon; Smyrna, Delaware; and Springfield, Missouri — Lake George Village is likely to join your exclusive group. The village will be hosting a food truck competition and festival next year, if Mayor Robert Blais’ plans become reality. Blais unveiled his intentions for his food truck competition at the village board meeting held Aug. 19. Blais said he would be organizing the festival on his own, as he has already done with several other village festivals that have since become extremely popular with the public. “This is an idea I’ve had for several years,” he said, noting it might be a two or threeday summer event at the Lake George Festival Commons. “We’ll put up a pretty big prize — $2,500 or so — and food truck operators will compete for the championship which will also give them bragging rights.” Blais said the food truck competition might be scheduled to occur one week prior to the Adirondack Wine & Food Festival, which each year crushes previous years’ attendance records. More than a dozen food trucks were featured at this year’s Adirondack Food & Wine Festival, held the last week of June on the Festival Commons. The event was so popular, there was regularly a line of people up to a quarter-mile long — three-to four abreast —backed up from the entrance gate through its two-day tenure. Blais, the longest-serving mayor in New York
A waiting line extended for a quarter-mile to get into the 2019 edition of the Adirondack Wine & Food Festival on the second day of its two-day tenure June 28 and 29 at the Lake George Festival Commons. The event, which annually crushes prior years’ attendance records, featured 13 food trucks this year as well as 58 wineries, distilleries and breweries,. Mayor Robert Blais is planning to hold a food truck competition and festival next year at the same venue, and he is predicting it will also be a rousing success. Photo provided history, said early this year he was planning to retire after his present term and take up a new career planning festivals and other events. Several entrepreneurs have launched
events in Lake George which have become quite prosperous while attracting many thousands of people to the village — and Mayor Blais was involved in planning most of these events, if not conceiving them.
Blais predicted that his food truck competition would be a huge hit with the public. “Wherever they’ve had these contests, they’ve been very successful,” he said. ■

INDIAN LAKE |September is rolling up and that means peak Fall foliage. But for the town of Indian Lake, September does not only bring hopes of tourism through the fiery colors swathed upon the mountains. During the weekend of Sept. 28 and 29, the town hopes to bring travelers and moose lovers to possibly glimpse a view of the once elusive animal at the Great Adirondack Moose Festival.

The half-ton mammal is making a comeback in the Adirondacks. According to New York State Department of Conservation, in a study during January 2019, there were 83 groups of one or more moose found living in New York in an aerial survey.
According to the event chairs Brenda Valentine and Darrin Harr, “The festival is a celebration of the return of the moose to the Adirondacks and is designed to offer a multi-generational Adirondack experience. This community-wide event features a host of Adirondack style and moose-themed family fun activities.”
When The Great Adirondack Moose Festival or GAMF kicks off in the last week of September, chances of spotting one, during the fall mating season when the mammal travels widely in search of a mate, make the festival that much more enticing.

We’re all guilty when it comes to pushing off the tough tasks to a later date. Our government entities are far worse when it comes to kicking the can down the road. Politicians won’t risk a single vote when it comes to addressing a high wire issue that could backfire and go badly very quickly. Leave it to President Trump to light a fire on the China trade issue to get the world spinning a little hotter. By most accounts, economists, politicians, and even the media agree that China’s been eating our lunch over the last few decades. It was easier to go along than it was to aggressively challenge our number one geopolitical competitor, with so much at stake. In the age-old battle between a free democracy and a communist regime, we’ve seen Chinese policies that forced technology transfer, intellectual property theft and other trade practices that have enabled Chinese stateowned enterprises to deprive U.S. companies by diver ting profits that other wise would have gone to them. Over the years since we open relations with China, we’ve gone through periods of tension followed by periods of stabilization but more often than not the stabilization was brought about by unbalanced concessions on the part of the U.S. No one wins in a trade war, but at some point in our relationship, the U.S. needed to stand up and demand fair trade practices that benefit both nations. There is more than enough room to criticize the Trump approach, but at the core of the dispute with trade, China must realize the U.S. is fully committed to resolving these issues now versus later. Unfortunately, in the past, our leaders have agreed to solutions that favored China since we still held the upper hand. As times and conditions have changed, we can no longer negotiate in this manner. We can only hope that the President ’s unconventional political approach to the negotiations tip China’s imbalance to a more favorable outcome for the U.S. and set the stage for more level treatment in the future. Additionally, since manufacturing and advanced technology have national security implications, the need to protect these sources of U.S. economic growth, competitiveness, and security have strategic importance with the U.S. defense industry, that has long been skeptical about Chinese intentions. If not now, we may never be in a better position to take up the challenge of the long-term strategic competition with China. ■ — Dan Alexander is the publisher of the Sun Community News

Kickin’ Ash! By Rich Redman COLUMNIST
We have been hearing it for the last year or two, the invasion is coming, no not migrants, the Emerald Ash borer. On a recent trip to Western New York, I personally saw the damage done. Countless White Ash, (Fraxinus) trees are being killed by this bug. To quote the Cornell website: “The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire is an invasive, wood boring beetle native to Asia that feeds on and eventually kills all species of Ash. The EAB was first found in North America in 2002 near Detroit and
since has spread to 13 states and two Canadian provinces, killing hundreds of millions of Ash trees in rural and urban settings. The Emerald Ash Borer has been found in a number of New York State counties, and a quarantine zone is in effect to prevent its further spread.” It is now in Vermont, Canada and counties to our south, we are in its crosshairs. The quarantine is not working, the bug is coming to an Ash tree near you soon. Along the New York State Thruway, crews with excavators are removing dead and dying trees before they fall into the roadway. Along 18-mile creek in the Hamburg area, trees are dying, and tree crews are very busy cutting and removing neighborhood roadside trees. The Clarence area
Horse racing is cruelty
To the Editor: This year, 58 horses have already died on New York State race tracks. Ten have died at Saratoga Race Course since April. Horseracing is cruelty and violence disguised as sport and entertainment. It is predicated on the exploitation of sentient beings as gambling instruments. Horses are moneymakers in a morally bankrupt industry that disposes of them when their returns diminish. The idea that running is natural for these horses is a fallacy blithely repeated to reassure people of their right to participate in this exploitation, and to assuage their guilt about the subsequent deaths, injuries, and miserable, unnatural existence these animals must endure. Racehorses are bred as investments and begin “training” at 18 months and racing at 2-years-old even though they do not reach musculoskeletal maturity until around age 6. There is nothing natural about horses being kept isolated in stalls for up to 23 hours a day, deprived of social interaction. There is nothing noble in forcing horses, through violent whipping while perched on their back, to run at

perilous speeds around a track, often in extreme temperatures and in dangerous proximity to one another. They suffer horrific fractures, head-on collisions, pulmonary hemorrhages and myriad other dreadful injuries that lead to the same outcome – their untimely deaths at the hands of humans. Tens of thousands are ultimately “retired” to slaughterhouses in Canada or Mexico. The time has come to shut down this abhorrent travesty. Join a group like Horseracing Wrongs to educate, agitate and advocate. Do not stand idly by while others bet on lives that are being sacrificed for entertainment. Do realize that the pain, suffering and killing of these horses make for a terrible backdrop for afternoon picnics in fancy clothes. You can like horses. You can like horseracing. You can’t like both. - Christina Holland, Plattsburgh ■
Drop animals from menus
To the Editor: This Sept. 1 will mark 80 years since Hitler invaded Poland and started World War II. Three years later, he launched the Holocaust that murdered 6 million European Jews.
A key question facing historians is how could an enlightened society that produced our civilization’s greatest philosophers, poets, painters and composers also produce its most notorious mass murderers, along with millions of ordinary upstanding citizens who just went along. Was the Holocaust a peculiarly German phenomenon, or are other enlightened societies capable? How about our own American society? Jewish Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer gave a clear answer when he wrote, “To the animals, all people are Nazis.” Singer’s message is that we are all capable of oppressing the more vulnerable sentient beings in our midst, frequently without even thinking about it. Our own enlightened society has translated the arbitrary Nazi dictum “the Christian lives, the Jew dies” into an equally arbitrary “the dog lives, the pig dies.” Only the victims’ names have been changed. The blissful, self-serving ignorance of the death camps and slaughterhouses in our midst remains. Our very first step on the long road to end all oppression should be to drop animals from our menus. - Ashanti Jenkins, Ticonderoga ■

Caboose move, grants and fourth Annual History Weekend highlight Depot Museum activity NORTH CREEK |The NCRDPA is having another busy season, welcoming visitors and working on projects to improve and expand the museum experience. The most ambitious project was the moving of its new D&H caboose to static rail in front of the Depot platform. The caboose, which was given to the museum last year, was moved by Depot volunteers to its new permanent home in front of the Depot Museum platform. Volunteers are now working on building access, and making plans for painting the exterior and restoring the interior of the 80 year old rail car. Plans for the caboose include installing educational exhibits, opening it for tours, and installing a model rail road for visitors young and old to enjoy. The project is supported by Warren County Occupancy Tax funds awarded through the Town of Johnsburg and the Community Fund for the Gore Mountain Region. The museum was recently awarded several grants to further its educational mission. The first was a generous grant from the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust to install a security system in the Owens House Building on Main Street. This grant will allow the museum to install temporary and permanent exhibits with artifacts from its collection which was not possible before. Plans include renovating the classroom to resemble a waiting room in a train station. The Depot Museum secured a Community Arts Organization Grant through LARAC, the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council, for their project, “People and Trains That Could,” and presented these workshops with guest teachers and artists this spring with others planned for the fall at the school and eventually at the Museum itself. Students in the kindergarten, first grade and second grade have been delighted with the reading, writing and role playing they experienced in literacy workshops presented by guest teachers Robin Jay, Chris Flack, Linda Quintavalle and William Bibby. They drew, colored and painted art projects related to children’s literature: The Little

Red Caboose, The Little Engine That Could, and All Aboard Trains. In October, the Depot Museum plans trips to the caboose for Learning to Ski with Mr. Magee. Another exciting aspect of this collaboration: young people, ages 12 to 18, are invited to join an acting workshop designed to bring historical figures significant to our community alive for a platform performance at the station planned for the History Weekend this fall. Students have been coached by local actors from GEM Radio Theater and be provided authentic costumes. Next fall, a professional filmmaker will then direct the young actors and create a movie that will become a permanent display for the museum. The 4th Annual History Days event will start with the of return of “Voices From the Past” Graveyard Walk Friday, Sept. 6, at 6 and 7:30 p.m. at Union Cemetery on Main Street in North Creek. Event buttons will serve as tickets and can been purchased in advance at the Community Bank in North Creek for $8. A limited number will be available the night of the event at a cost of $10 per person. Saturday, Sept. 7 events will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the North Creek Depot Museum and River Front Park. Dedication of The Little Red Caboose will be held at 2 p.m. followed immediately by a performance by our student actors. There will be tours of the Museum and caboose, music, food, hay-rake making and blacksmith forging exhibits, vendors, games, Old Time Photo Booth and more. History Days events are co-sponsored by the Town of Johnsburg, the North Creek Railway Depot Museum, and the Johnsburg Historical Society. Sunday, Sept. 8 will feature “The Great Adirondack Stagecoach Robbery” co-sponsored by Gem Radio Theater and Tannery Pond Center at 2 p.m. at the Tannery Pond Community Center (TPCC). Tickets are available for $10 in advance at the TPCC and $15 at the door. Children/students 12-years-old and under are free. Four of the five members of the village board approved the $248,690 change order. Board member Joe Mastrodomenico voted against reserving that sum for payment. This document was presented to the board by Sean Doty of Chazen Companies engineering firm. The increase in the engineering oversight is due to contractors submitting a schedule that — contrary to expectations — calls for them to be working through two winter seasons. Doty said the contractors told him they needed to work this winter and next because it was necessary to do so to meet the state’s mandated deadline. “We at Chazen don’t control the
As part of this program, adults will read books that pertain to certain themes as related to STEM over the course of several months. This year’s themes are tradition, transformation, motion and heritage. Sign-up began Aug. 26 and will run through Sept. 9. We can’t grow this college into the asset it could be if we don’t invest in it.” Moore added that SUNY Adirondack’s athletic facilities “had been neglected for years” and were “in bad shape” and needed upgrades, and that the college was losing students to other colleges because of the needed improvements. “We lose students to other colleges because of them, including kids who are born and raised here,” he said, noting that renovations would be a good investment, particularly because the state would match any money spent on college facility upgrades dollar-for-dollar.

Doty said that regardless of this increase, the entire cost of developing the sewer plant might stay within the $24 million figure cited since April, because the increase could be assigned to the plant budget’s $1.1 contingency expenses category. ■

“We should be attracting new students and building a homegrown workforce that’s in sync with quality jobs in quality industries that we want to encourage to come here.”
“Amish Built Sheds And More”
Another element in the increased expenses was due to extra work that Chazen performed on various grant applications, Doty said. These documents were prepared because the village is about $9.5 million short of grant money if the plant is to be affordable to taxpayers, according to figures supplied by the village and town of Lake George.

He continued that the partnerships between SUNY colleges and private enterprise was a primary engine for economic development in upstate New York, thus it was important to keep SUNY Adirondack competitive.
Another factor in the $248,690 increase in engineering costs is due to a more experienced engineer being assigned to monitor the work in progress, Doty said.

Moore noted that the SUNY Adirondack administration had participated in the county’s recent capital needs inventory, and they had submitted a list of projects with an estimated cost of $25 million for facility improvements. A lonely soul, far from home By Jean Hadden CORRESPONDENT
In this column, last week, I strived to bring the Chestertown Rural Cemetery’s most famous burial back, for just one more time, into the bright light of modern day. John Butler Yeats was a remarkable man and in his lonely grave, far from his native Ireland, he well deserves to be remembered by us today. This gentleman was born in 1839 in County Down, Ireland, the son of a clergyman. John attended boarding schools and later Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, just as his father had done earlier, and planned to be a barrister (lawyer). After college he studied law and his studies can be only be described as desultory, aimless and leaping from one thing to another and never settling down to business. The sedate academic life, however, obviously planned for him by his well meaning father, was not the life that John was destined to follow. In 1863 he married Miss Susan Pollexfen and they had four children, two sons and
two daughters. Their son, William Butler Yeats was destined to be a world famous poet and dramatist who would win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. John Butler Yeats could aptly be described as eccentric, a man of a whimsical temperament. He settled into the Bohemian life of a painter, an extremely talented man who produced remarkable oil paintings of his subjects which today can be seen in the prestigious museums of the world. His life was a hard one and most of his fame unfortunately came well after his lonely death.
LEAVING IRELAND FOREVER
John’s wife, Susan Yeats, died after a series of strokes in London in 1900 and John found himself alone in life. On Dec. 21, 1907, he sailed with his daughter, Lolly Corbett, from Liverpool to New York City. John loved it there. It was meant to be a short trip but he settled in and never went back home to his beloved Ireland again in his lifetime. Lolly returned home and died in 1940, destined to never again see her father in her lifetime. Living in a boarding house on West 29th
Street, he resided in a room upstairs and spent most of his time in the restaurant below. He adapted to the Bohemian lifestyle and held court there where he had many followers who came to party with him. He belonged to the “Ashcan School of painters.” John continued to “talk brilliantly” to his captivated followers and he began oil paintings and found no time to finish them and his money began to dwindle and soon came to an end. It was in New York that John met his friend, poet and writer of note, Jeanne Robert Foster, from Chestertown. She was captivated by this grand old gentleman, with the great wit and “musical voice” who told wonderful stories of his beloved Ireland, far across the sea. He eventually died penniless on Feb. 3, 1922, when he was a ripe old 83-yearsof-age. In his final years his health had failed and Jeanne looked after him by his bedside. The funeral was held at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles in New York City. For the winter months his body rested in a vault in a Westchester Cemetery. His family did not have the funds needed to transport him home to Ireland.
Jeanne offered a burial site next to her husband’s family plot in the Chestertown Rural Cemetery. John was buried there in July of 1922. In 1967 the Foster family wrote to the Irish Senate a request to send a ship to bring John’s body home but it was denied, saying that only a family member could make such a request. At his death, his son, William wrote that his father had his hopes and ambitions to the last. Edmund Quinn made a death mask of John which today is in the collection of the Yeats’ Society in Sligo, Ireland. Several of John’s artworks are still on display in the “Yeats Museum” at the National Gallery of Ireland, including his famous portrait of his young son, William Butler Yeats. Today, 180 years after his birth in the green isle of Ireland, John Butler Yeats resides in his lonely grave in Chestertown, a forgotten man, but today, for one fleeting moment, we must remember him for the truly unusual man that he once was. ■ — Readers are welcome to contact Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518-623-2210.

Farmers market: more produce as season winds down WARRENSBURG | With the approach of fall, most consumers think of the growing season as coming to a close, but the Warrensburgh Farmers’ Riverfront Market has more produce now than earlier in the summer, with the ripening of later crops like corn, melons, eggplants, peppers and tomatoes. In fact, now is a good time to stock up on luscious vineripened tomatoes for canning and freezing. The Warrensburgh Farmers’ Market is held Friday afternoons from 3-6 p.m., and will be open through Columbus Day weekend. You will find it on the banks of the Schroon River in the Warrensburgh Mills Historic District on Route 418. ■

Adk. Nationals Car Show to descend on Lake George Vehicular access to be limited By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | Gleaming chrome, sinuous shapes and thunderous exhaust will descend on Lake George next week as the 31st annual Adirondack Nationals Car Show dominates the village from Thursday Sept. 5 through Sunday Sept. 8. Each year, Adirondack Nationals showcases an eyepopping array of about 1,500 vehicles, including ingenious and occasionally bizarre handcrafted hot rods — as well as painstakingly restored antique and classic sedans, muscle cars, vintage sports cars. In recent years, several “rat-rods” — outlandish vehicles that look like they were crafted for a Mad Max movie — have attracted substantial attention at the event. Each year, Adirondack Nationals draws capacity crowds to the village — as many as 50,000 spectators over the weekend. Because massive crowds have prompted hours-long traffic backups getting in and out of the village, spectators for both the Friday and Saturday night evening cruises are advised to arrive quite early— and leave late or stay overnight. Fireworks over the lake are scheduled for 10 p.m. Saturday. Canada Street will be blocked off on most all of its length through the village for these cruises, beginning at 5 p.m. both evenings, and parking will be either prohibited or limited to one side of the road on most of the village back streets. This latter aspect is to allow emergency vehicles to move freely as their access has been hampered in recent years, posing potential risks to public safety. During Friday and Saturday

The 2019 Adirondack Nationals event, to be held from Thursday Sept. 5 through Sunday Sept. 8, is to host as many as 1,500 hot rods and vintage sports cars as well as antique and classic sedans and trucks, as well as unique hand-crafted cruisers. and custom sedans, hot rods, sports cars and rare antique vehicles, and talking with their owners.
Spectators are urged to use public transportation if at all possible. The village trolleys will be operating, although with limited stops, in the village’s core. Details on trolley service can be found at: www.cityofglensfalls.com
Dozens of the restorations and customizing efforts are remarkable, with some vehicle owners investing as much as $300,000 to $500,000 in their work.
Special parking permits, which allow parking over five days, are available at the village office for a charge — but these permits don’t guarantee any particular space. Lake George Village Public Works Superintendent Dave Harrington said this week that Adirondack Nationals poses the most challenges, of any of the village’s events, for maintaining government operations. “It’s always a mess, but we’ll get through it,” he said. From about 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, many thousands of people will be inspecting the classic
Entry to the show is $15 for adults for a weekend pass — and children under 12 are free. The vehicles winning the dozens of trophies and prizes awarded in the show will be on display Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon in the Winners Circle Car Show, located at Fort William Henry. Festival Commons off West Brook Road will host dozens of vendors offering parts, equipment and services related to restoring or customizing vehicles. This vendor area will be open all day Friday and Saturday, and from 9 a.m. until noon on Sunday. ■

Indian Lake honors Citizen of the Year
Theater Board asked DeArmas to join the board, and in 2016 she was named the president of that board. She became a member of the Indian Lake Community Development Corporation (ILCDC) in 2017, an organization that assists local businesses as well as works with the town to develop a comprehensive plan. She is now a member of the ILCDC Board.
DeArmas unanimously chosen
INDIAN LAKE | The Indian Lake Town Board, at a recent meeting, unanimously passed a resolution naming Terry DeArmas as Indian Lake Town Citizen of the Year.
DeArmas is also a member of North Country Crafters.
DeArmas and her husband, Robin, built a home in Indian Lake in 2004 after visiting the Adirondacks annually from their home in Florida for a cross-country ski trip. Since that time, she has been involved in many organizations, taking on roles and tasks to benefit the Indian Lake community.
In her spare time, DeArmas and her husband enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and paddling around the Adirondacks. Indian Lake Town Supervisor Brian Wells was delighted to present DeArmas with the honor.
DeArmas served as the president of the Indian Lake Garden Club for several years and is currently secretary. Through the garden club, she was recruited to volunteer with the Regional Inlet Invasive Species Plant Program. DeArmas presently serves as the Indian Lake coordinator for that program, helping to eradicate Japanese knotweed, an invasive species, from local waterfront properties. As a member of the Country Christmas Tour Steering Committee, DeArmas has co-chaired a bake sale, the organization’s only fundraising event. Aware of her abilities and work ethic, the Indian Lake
“Terry is truly deserving of this award, as she exemplifies the individual who embraces their community with passion and compassion,” Wells said. “Not only do the volunteer organizations that Terry belongs to benefit from her selfless dedication, but so do the many individuals who make up our community. I wish to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to Terry as an individual who makes a difference.” Indian Lake Town Supervisor Brian Wells presents the Citizen of the Year plaque to Terry DeArmas.
