Area county clerks blast Cuomo’s license plate replacement plan

‘Nightmare’ backup at DMV offices predicted By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
CLIFTON PARK | The looming mandate for vehicle owners to obtain new license plates — whether they need them or not — was denounced last week as an extraneous tax on motorists and a burden on DMV staff by area county clerks who teamed up with state Sen. Jim Tedisco (R-Glenville) at a recent press conference. Among those joining Tedisco in criticizing Cuomo’s plan were Warren County Clerk Pam Vogel, Essex County Clerk Joe Provoncha and Hamilton County Clerk Jane Zarecki and their counterparts from five other counties in the region. Tedisco has called for the state legislature to hold hearings this fall on the plate-replacement measure that the Cuomo administration set in motion without approval by state lawmakers. Joining the chorus of discontent with the plan have been local officials — both Democrats and Republicans.

Two local women make history as they are elected to lead Chestertown Rotary TOWN OF CHESTER | The Chestertown Rotary Cub just entered a new era this summer, as the community-service organization elected Nan Williams as president and Debra Eves as vice president. In the club’s 70-year history, neither office has ever been held by a female — until now. Both began their tenure as of July.

WARRENSBURG | Steve Farina looked out over dozens of prize-winning vehicles parked on the front lawn of Fort William Henry on Sept. 8, the final day of the 2019 Adirondack Nationals Car Show at which 1,600 vehicles were on display from Sept. 6 through Sept. 8. Known as the Favorite Fifty, these vehicles — chosen by members of Albany Rods & Kustoms club members — ranged from meticulously restored antique
sedans to 1960s muscle cars — joined by a few vehicles pieced together from salvaged junkyard parts. “At the Adirondack Nationals show, we have an unsurpassed collection of rolling sculpture,” said Farina, a longtime member and former official of the car club. “It’s nothing less than automotive art.” Taste in art encompasses a wide range, and two vehicles in this group of Favorite 50 epitomized the extremes in automotive aesthetics.

By Dan Alexander PUBLISHER
Anyone in business today will tell you these are very interesting and challenging times in which we find ourselves. Low unemployment, rapidly changing technology, tariffs, rising health insurance and benefit costs and the list could go on and on. Today’s businesses find themselves in competition, not just with similar businesses, but with every employer in the hopes of maintaining customers, and employees while expanding services and keeping costs low. It requires burning the candle from both ends, so to speak. Automation, while expensive, is a necessary strategy just to keep pace with the daily workflow. In the next few weeks, we will be undertaking our first step into deploying our pre-press operation into the automation of a “cloud” server. The current pre-press operation requires a skilled computer technician to manage five separate computers each controlling a unique function in processing each page of the paper to the Computer-to-Plate machine. This automated workflow operation will allow us to free up one key person from the printing department and allow her to use her graphic design skills by transferring them into the newspaper editorial and pagination design department. The change will become essential to our readers as it will now allow us to expand the window for further customization of each zoned edition of The Sun. The result will improve the quality and quantity of the news coverage both in print and online. Like every business, we survive when we provide a valued service recognized by our customers. As profit margins narrow, we will be looking to tighten expenses in the future to offset rising costs. One way to accomplish that is to look closely at our production and distribution costs by eliminating non-essential copies which may not be reaching the intended target. Shortly, we will be sampling communities, where financial support for the paper has fallen off, to determine if the mailed free distribution is still warranted in that area. If for any reason, your paper fails to arrive in your mailbox, please make certain to let us know by calling our office to confirm your name and address in our database. By doing so, you can help the paper qualify for a reduced postal rate classification. In this way, we can focus our news coverage and production efforts, where they are doing the most good for the benefit of our advertisers who ultimately pay for the services we provide at no cost to you. ■

Preachers of the new secular religion
to justify murdering Jews (Jews weren’t “Aryans”) and many other humans. (But see Joshua 6:21, also). Researchers have shown that at least some parent trees transfer food to their offspring saplings. In mammals we call that nursing. Trees nurse and mother their young. They tell their kin when they are dying. They are sentient. (Jenkins’ cohort should stop using wood products!) Perhaps other plants are sentient, also. By the way, who had the authority to set “sentient” as a standard for the right to live? How do you measure sentience in alien life forms like lettuce, pumpkin or amoeba? Who has tried? The mega-farms necessary for a non-meat utopia ignore fauna displacement due to habitat loss (e.g. the Amazon): don’t eat animals, evict them and starve them to death. Morality at its worst! The moral high ground is: Don’t take any life unnecessarily; don’t waste the life taken; and give thanks to the life taken. — G. Howard, Keeseville ■ (This letter is in response to Ashanti Jenkins’ letter, “Drop animals from menus,” that appeared in the Aug. 31 edition of The Sun.)
To the Editor: Marx said “Religion is the opiate of the people.” If the masses demand an opiate, simply substitute evironmentalism for Christianity. Academia can provide a catechism. Modern temperature records for N.Y.S., the U.S. and the world were all set a century or more ago. Now A.O.C. has given us only 12 more years. Progressive “Scientific Experts” told us our coastal cities would be underwater; fishing and maple syrup would be a fond memory. Still waiting. China, the world’s biggest polluter, and India, another large polluter having the right to unlimited polluting while the U.S. is put into an economic straitjacket is a suicide pact. As evidenced by the media’s collusion and obstruction hallucinations, propaganda can’t outweigh facts. Let’s have a closer look at the relationship between increasing plant life and CO2 emissions before making rash decisions. I was an environmentalist before it became a religion. Clunkers, laying down a smoke screen and roadsides used as dumps made me angry. There’s just too much hyperbole by preachers of the new secular religion. Their lifestyle doesn’t match their sermons, making their sincerity suspect. — Kenneth G. Barcomb, Altona ■
Farmers upset over trade war
To the Editor: “Trade wars are good, and easy to win,” said President Donald Trump, May 2, 2018. No, they aren’t, as U.S. farmers can attest. American soybean exports to China have declined by 80%. Soybean prices have crashed 25% since the start of our trade war. Prices on other export commodities, even coal, have similarly collapsed. Two coal companies went bankrupt in July (adding to several coal mine bankruptcies since Trump assumed office) causing hundreds of layoffs and putting thousands of additional jobs at risk. Meanwhile, because of the administration’s penchant for unilateral action, our allies are reaping windfall, as China abondons us and buys from them. While our government borrows billions - from China - for giant new agricultural welfare programs to avoid mass farm bankruptcies, China simply turns to Brazil for soybeans. That’s why Brazilian farmers, emboldened by their own rightwing, nationalist, anti-environmental president, are illegally burning the Amazon at an unprecedented rate. Elections have worldwide consequences. — Frank Pagano, Jay ■
The moral high ground
To the Editor: I grow concerned when zealots like Jenkins’ attempt to establish a diet-based moral high ground, “Drop animals from menus.” Most creatures, humans included, can not survive without taking the life of another living entity. Jenkins has made a division between fauna (animals) and flora (plants). Killing fauna is evil - Nazi like. Killing flora is encouraged. Imagine you are a carrot at carrot puberty, when someone rips you from the ground, then eats you while you are alive. Or, you are a pecan tree watching someone crack open your embryos’ shells, then consuming them - in front of you! Jenkins has set a value of one type of life above another: fauna over flora. This is an extremely dangerous philosophy. It is this type of thinking that Christians used to justify enslaving the less than human (in their eyes) Africans and the Nazi’s and others have used

‘Live the Stream’ movie By Rich Redman GUEST COLUMNIST
If you are a fly fisherman or woman, you probably heard of Joe Humphreys. Humphreys caught his first trout at age 6, and never stopped after that. It became his life’s passion. At 86 young years of age, he still fishes, studies fish, teaches fish and writes about fish, stream ecology, and of course, fly fishing for trout. At Penn State College in central PA, home of many beautiful trout streams, Joe Humphreys teaches a course on Fly Fishing. He is eager to pass on his knowledge and
wisdom to the youth of our Nation. A quote from a website says it all, “I think that’s what makes him so special, he truly, truly wants to help people,” said his daughter Hanna Humphreys “He feels like he was put on Earth to give what he knows to other people. Whatever he’s figured out, he’s willing to share.” Lucas and Meigan Bell shadowed Joe Humphreys for three years photographing, videoing and writing about his life. Three years of work have been edited to a 93-minute movie called “LIVE THE STREAM”. Trout Unlimited was offered a chance to premier this movie locally before its’ release, our local TU Chapters saw an opportunity and wanted to share this with you.

On the western side of the lawn, a classic 1954 Chevrolet truck was parked alone in an open space beside a towering trophy, while the other 49 awarded vehicles were lined up side by side surrounding it. This impeccable Chevy truck — recently featured on the cover of Classic Trucks magazine as the “Gold Standard” of automotive restoration and customizing — had just been honored as Adirondack Nationals’ “Senior Award,” which is granted annually to the most impressive vehicle chosen as outstanding for two consecutive years. Owned by Rob Newman of Bridgewater, N.J., the truck has won many national honors, including multiple top awards at both the Detroit Autorama show and SEMA car show in Las Vegas. It was customized to perfection years ago by Jeff Matauch, a renowned expert in automotive paint. This gleaming Chevy pickup, nationally known by the title “Liquid Gold,” displays Matauch’s expertise. About 30 yards away was another Favorite 50, exemplifying the epitome of the “rat rod” trend in custom vehicles. This rusty assemblage of junkyard vehicle parts started off as a deteriorating 1940 Ford pickup body, welded to a Chevy S-10 frame, sporting salvaged parts from everything from 1950s GMC to a Nissan Versa — all fused together, welding seams left primitive.

Its gigantic engine, taken from an old tow truck and updated with fuel injection and a supercharger — is so large it obscures the driver’s vision out the windshield. The vehicle’s owner/builder, Nick Molinski of Champlain, talked about how his “daily driver” featured kitchen castoffs as well as automotive salvage. “That was my mom’s spaghetti strainer,” he said, pointing to the dome-shaped screen covering the mouth of the supercharger’s air intake — a re-purposed 1938 headlight cowling. “It will strain out gravel and birds, but it won’t do much else,” he said, adding that he hasn’t yet been able to locate an air filter that will fit in the old body part. While many of the custom vehicles at Adirondack Nationals cost $100,000 to $300,000 to build, Molinski said he spent On Sept. 8, the final day of the Lake George Adirondack Nationals Car Show, Rob Newman poses with his 1954 Chevy 3100 pickup that won the year’s top award. only $6,000 to create a vehicle that won Adirondack Nationals’ 2019 Kenny Jensen Award — and a third of that $6,000 was likely spent on the new tires.
Molinski stood beside huge rusty exhaust pipes that drooped over his front fenders, and explained how they were outfitted with oxygen sensors, despite their primitive, menacing appearance. “I’ve got the best of both worlds here — technology from today, mixed with some old-school parts — and I still get 20 miles to the gallon, and 525 horsepower delivered to the rear tires.” Both Molinski’s creation and Newman’s 1954 Chevy 3100 drew plenty of spectators over the weekend at Adirondack Nationals. One of the show’s countless attendees — a man appearing to be about 70 years old — gazed at the “Liquid Gold” Chevy show-winner and with tears in his eyes, walked up to Newman and gave him a hug. Moments later, Newman said that his truck reminds people of vehicles they have owned and loved as young adults. “People gravitate to it wherever it goes — people feel a real affinity for it,” he said. “It really inspires them.” Newman gazed over the thousands of people examining vehicles of all makes and vintages. “I’ve been at a lot of car shows, and it doesn’t get any better than this — Lake George is a magical place.” ■

WARRENSBURG | Warren County’s fleet of emergency services vehicles will soon be moved to location where they will be more able to reach northern Warren County locations in case of a calamity. One of Warren County’s dozen-plus emergency response vehicles sits outside the county Municipal Center in 2015. After years of debate, Warren County took action this summer to establish a permanent home for the $1 million worth of emergency services vehicles and equipment by constructing a building at the municipal center, and the move means more timely responses to any calamity occurring in northern Warren County. several special-operations vehicles. He also had warned that emergency personnel might not be able to respond in a timely manner to a disaster occurring during a major snowstorm. After state officials informed the county about two years ago that the equipment had to be housed, some of the vehicles were stored in a county building on Lower Warren Street in Queensbury — a former factory, a portion of which the county leases to a recycling enterprise. But LaFlure continued his campaign to have the vehicles and equipment relocated for various reasons: dust from the recycling operation at the factory building, its peripheral location, and the lack of adequate space there. In a recent county subcommittee meeting, county Public Works Superintendent Kevin Hajos presented four options for housing the vehicles, and one of the choices was to construct a building in Warrensburg, an option that was declined. The years of debate was quelled at that meeting soon after county Budget Officer and Stony Creek Supervisor Frank Thomas voiced a blunt comment. “We should pay cash and get it done before winter — It’s time we put up or shut up,” he said. The supervisors then voted to construct a new building at the municipal center, where it would be close to the county Emergency Services headquarters. At the recent August meeting of the full Board of Supervisors, funding was appropriated for the structure. ■

Burghers smother Helderberg Valley, 64-0 Veterans, rookies together achieve high-scoring shutout By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARRENSBURG | Just two weeks ago, Warrensburg-North Warren football coach Mike Perrone said this year’s prospects posed a lot of questions — His newly merged team included a half-dozen players with little or no football experience, who’d have to step into the roles of graduating players that were key to the team’s 2018 Sectional championship. On Sept. 7, those questions may have been answered — with an exclamation point or two. The Burghers defeated Helderberg Valley 64-0, a game that produced the Burghers’ highest score differential in recent history. Warrensburg scored eight unanswered touchdowns and eight conversions in their relentless offensive attack. Veteran running back Jesse Griffin, a senior, and freshman fullback Tristen Hitchcock each scored two touchdowns. They were joined by sophomore running back Dylan Winchell who scored on a 93-yard run, senior quarterback Mac Baker who ran into the end zone after charging 60 yards, junior wide receiver Anthony Girard on a seven-yard gain via the ground, and sophomore receiver Andrew
Burgher quarterback Mac Baker heads off on an end run during a recent practice session. The newly combined Warrensburg-North Warren football team won their season opener Sept. 7 versus Helderberg Valley by a score of 64-0, one of the highest-scoring shutouts in Burgher history — and Baker scored two of the eight touchdowns. Photo by Thom Randall Beadnell on a 51-yard run. Although the runners were in the spotlight, much of their success was due to the offensive line — featuring some talented but untested players — clearing the path for them, coach Mike Perrone said. “Our veteran running backs were fast and dynamic, but our younger players had huge runs too,” he said. “Our offensive line did a heck of a job — a half-dozen of our guys who had never played football were out on the field for a lot of minutes and performed
quite well. Up front, Jacob Clear and Tanner Dunkley blocked unbelievably well — and this is Jacob’s first varsity game and Tanner’s first experience in competitive football.” Beadnell, a North Warren athlete like Dunkley, was one of those rookies that Perrone praised. “In his first game ever, Beadnell broke a 51-yarder like he had done it all his life, the coach continued. “It was fun to see.” Perrone also complimented senior
linebacker Zach Shambo, who racked up 11 tackles — a game-high tally — four of them for a loss. “Shambo played fast punching through Helderberg’s line — he showed a lot of leadership,” Perrone said. “He and Tristen Hitchcock helped preserve the shutout.” Scoring the eight conversions with runs were Baker (2), Griffin, Hithcock, Winchell, freshman Landon Olden, and junior Zach Carpenter, plus Dunkley via a reception. “Honestly, we were expecting the score to be a lot tighter,” Perrone said. “But our guys were very, very excited about the game, and they jumped on Helderberg really quick — which gave us a lot of confidence and that swung things in our favor.” Over the game, Winchell executed four runs for 131 yards; Baker had five runs for 91 yards; Hitchcock gained 72 yards on six runs, Jesse Griffin had five carries for 67 yards; Beadnell had his one carry for 51 yards; and junior Jordan Mallory and senior Jaron Griffin each had one carry for 12 yards and 11 yards respectively. Mac Baker completed three of his five passes for 69 yards gained — receiving were Hitchcock, Winchell and Jesse Griffin, for 40, 17 and 12 yards respectively. Regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s showdown, Perrone said he saw a lot of mistakes in the game film. “We definitely have to get better — we have a lot of work to accomplish to be where we want to be.” ■
BCS-WCS girls soccer team displays power - and promise By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
BOLTON LANDING | The Bolton-Warrensburg girls soccer team has extended their success of last year by winning the first two games of their 2019 season. On Aug. 29, the Eagles — a C-ranked team representing 60 Bolton students and about 235 Warrensburg pupils — defeated Albany High, an AA school with an enrollment of 2,450 students, by a score of 9-2. Following the game, Bolton-Warrensburg coach Margaret Lawrence downplayed the score differential. Against Albany, seniors Aubrey Ranous and Leah Monroe led the way with three goals each, followed by senior Hope Boland, sophomore Gabrielle Mowery and freshman Kara Bacon. Boland was credited with three assists; and Monroe had two, while Mowery, Ranous, Bacon and Sophomore Skyler Scott achieved one assist each. Junior goaltender Jordan Parker had two saves off four shots on goal. Against Galway, Bolton-Warrensburg’s firepower was unchained. Within the fist 20 minutes of the game, Monroe had

CHESTERTOWN | Most standout athletes who’ve attained success in their high school sports get lost in the ranks of college sports players — but not North Warren graduate Sydney Gagnon, who was renowned in northern Warren County as an All-Star three-sport athlete. In the first season of her freshman year at Hartwick College, she’s already exerted a considerable impact in sports. A starter on the Hartwick Hawks field hockey team, she’s been a pivotal player in the squad’s 3-0 unbeaten streak this year. In the season opener versus Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Aug. 30, Sydney Gagnon started off the first quarter of the first game of her collegiate career by taking two
shots. She finished off the showdown with a game-high seven shots — four of them on goal. Her teammate Katie Meuse scored the two goals that resulted in a 2-1 win over RPI. A week later versus Oneonta — with a few minutes remaining in the second overtime period, and the score tied 2-2 — Gagnon took a blistering on-target pass from teammate Leah Tolley and slapped it past the Oneonta goalkeeper for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. The Hawks’ defense shut down SUNY Oneonta’s comeback effort, and Hartwick won 3-2. On Sept. 6 in a game against Morrisville, Gagnon assisted on the Hawks’ first goal by taking a pass and relaying it to Bella Wheeler who sank the ball into the net. Midway in the second half, Gagnon rushed the goalie, and in this battle rebounded her own shot for a goal. Over the game — an 8-2 victory for Hartwick
— Gagnon took 10 shots, seven of which went on net, besides tallying several assists. A local sports reporter noted that Gagnon has executed “a strong start to her collegiate career” — and judging from comments on Facebook, it looks like Gagnon’s hometown fans think so too. As a North Warren Central athlete, Gagnon was named to the All-state field hockey team in her junior and senior years, as well as being a first team All-Star for three years. Gagnon was also achieved All-Star status as a shortstop for North Warren’s softball team. In Basketball, she was a key player that led her team to her school’s first Section II girls basketball championship in 37 years, earning All-Star status through her career, as well as AllState honors her senior year. She also holds the school records for the most three-point baskets in a season as well as over a player’s career. ■

From ROTARY » pg. 1
One hundred years ago - September 1919 By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST
Because of the troubling times that we all live in currently, many of us think nostalgically of “the good old days.” Upon reading the newspapers of a hundred years ago, we come to realize that life back than was far from serene and held many awful tragedies.
LADY IN A FOREIGN LAND
Miss Emily Stevens, a guest of Camp Cedar, on Schroon Lake, near Pottersville, was drowned in the lake at 1 o’clock in the afternoon on Aug. 22, 1919. She was in a canoe with her landlady, Mrs. Fox and a little girl when the frail craft was upset near the shore, but in rather deep water. Miss Stevens, after a brief struggle, was drowned, but the others succeeded in getting ashore. The body was recovered and Coroner James E. Goodman was summoned from Warrensburgh. Miss Stevens had been at the camp all of the season and had previously roomed with Mrs. Fox in Philadelphia, but the latter knew little about her personal life and was unable to furnish the names of any of her relatives. The body, by direction of the coroner, was removed to the undertaking rooms in Warrensburgh and she was embalmed. It was later determined, upon examination, that she was a resident of London, England. Unable to locate any of her relatives, she was buried in the Warrensburgh Cemetery. Miss Stevens, 40 years old, was of a refined appearance and was evidently a woman of breeding and culture. Evidentially her family, if she had one, will probably never know what ever became of her. This is a mystery that has so far yet never been solved.
RIVERSIDE TRAGEDY
Mrs. J.G, Earl, of Albany, was instantly killed, at about 4:14 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, when she was struck by a southbound D&H train at the bridge crossing just above the Riverside Station. Her skull was fractured and she was dragged several feet before the train was stopped. The body was removed to North Creek and from that
place it was shipped to Albany. Mrs. Earl, with her young daughter, had been occupying a cottage in Riverside Grove for several days and they were starting for the post office to mail a letter. The young girl crossed the track safely and Mrs. Earl stopped to wait for the train to pass and stood too close to the track where she was struck by the first car of the train as many people about the station watched in horror. When she was picked up she was apparently unconscious and she died almost immediately. Mrs. Earl was about 40 years old.
LOCAL MAN LOSES ARM
Jesse Ingraham, a former and well known resident of Warrensburgh, lost his left arm on Thursday morning, Aug. 28, 1919, in an accident in the Stevens & Thompson Paper Company’s mill at Middle Falls where he had only been employed since Aug. 1, 1919. Mr. Ingraham was working overtime on a new machine, a pulp grinder, when he reached with his right hand to replace a slipping belt, his foot slipped and he fell against the machine, his left hand striking the grinder and being drawn between the rapidly revolving knives. The arm was mangled and crushed to a pulp to the elbow before he could withdraw it. Nearby workmen were able to partially stop the flow of blood until Dr. Rogers, of Greenwich, arrived and he could be taken to the Troy hospital where the arm was amputated to a little above the elbow. Jesse Ingraham has a wife and two children. He was a clerk in the Warrensburgh Post Office for eight years and his friends here are deeply sympathetic for his plight.
LITTLE BOY GONE
Robert Sentenne Woodward, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Woodward, died on a Sunday afternoon in Saratoga Springs after a short illness of acute diabetes. He was two years old, lacking thirteen days. When your family suffers a loss, we want to help you let your friends and neighbors know. Each week we will publish a list of Death Notices at no charge. These notices will include name, date of death & birth, age, town and the name of the funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Like most newspapers, we do need to charge a small fee of $65 for a 250-word obituary which will include a picture (if supplied) in the paper. Larger sizes are also available. If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.

Williams became a member of Chestertown Rotary when she moved up to the town of Chester in 2016 to live year-round on Loon Lake. Before then, she had been a member of the Southern Saratoga County Rotary Club, based in Clifton Park. As a Chestertown Rotary Club member, Williams has gained a reputation for working diligently on the club’s various events and projects — including soliciting donors toward the annual holiday Memory Tree, volunteering to help run the Krazy Downhill Derby, helping organize the Rotary Golf Tournament, and working on local roadside cleanup. Chris Aiken, who held the one-year tenure as president before Williams, said she is a hard worker and skilled organizer who is detail-oriented. “Nan is really enthusiastic, industrious, engaged — and she has a passion for Rotary’s mission,” he said. “Also, she inspires others to get things done. We expect the coming year to be productive and full of events.” Nan acquired her administrative expertise by assisting her husband Eivion Williams in operating his wholesale recreational vehicle supply business, while raising two children. When the couple sold the enterprise in the 1990s, Nan Williams launched her own travel agency in Clifton Park and ran it for 10 years — before internet reservations all but doomed the business, she said. Williams said that she was quite appreciative of

the warm welcome from the Chestertown Rotary Club members, and how the organization’s mission has become an important part of her life. “The Rotary members were wonderful and generous to me when I moved to the area after my husband passed away,” she said. “I got involved with Rotary, and it’s wonderful for me — as I enjoy a whole new lifestyle up here.” Asked about her reaction to being elected president — and being the first-ever female to hold the post, Williams offered her thoughts. “I couldn’t believe it; I’m still in shock,” she laughed. “I didn’t know what I was getting into,” she added with a smile. “Really, It’s a good learning experience to discover more about Rotary and its charitable and beneficial work.” Debra Eves has worked for a number of years as the marketing director for the North Warren Chamber of Commerce. Eves said recently she was honored to be chosen for the post. Aiken said Eves has been quite active in Rotary, despite being a member for a relatively short time of two years or so. “Debra has been involved in organizing various Rotary projects and enterprises,” he said. “She brings good ideas and insight with her as she takes on her new position,” he said. The Chestertown Rotary Club, which has more than two dozen active members, meets at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at O.P. Frederick’s restaurant at Loon Lake — and the group always welcomes new members. ■

WILD ABOUT HUNTING & FISHING Autumn generally kickstarts deer hunting season in many areas of the United States and Canada. Depending on the region, elk, caribou, moose, and other deer species also may be in open season in fall as well. Each state/province has specific regulations concerning weaponry and hunting locations. Archery, muzzle-loader and youth hunting seasons often precede general firearms seasons. Licencing is widely necessary, and licenses can typically be acquired through Department of Wildlife and Game centers and websites. Counties may implement bag limits. Hunters are advised to check regulatory information prior to any hunting excursion. While frequently hunted for sport and trophy, game meat can be butchered and enjoyed throughout the winter months.

The pending policy requires any car owner with license plates older than 10 years to obtain new plates at a cost of $25, plus there’s a $20 surcharge to vehicle owners to retain their current plate digits. Tedisco said he computed the new plate’s cost at $1.15 per plate, leaving a $70 million “windfall” for state government. Tedisco said the plan to charge for new plates was a “highway heist” and “a $70 million-dollar reverse Robin Hood plan.” A Cuomo administration staffer contacted after the press conference characterized Tedisco’s press conference and statements as “grandstanding, “hypocritical” and “a cheap press grab,” according to a WNYT television news report. Cuomo’s representatives have said the new plates are necessary because the older plates can’t be read by automated toll cameras, or red-light enforcement devices, but this claim is disputed by Thruway officials and legislators. However, a relatively high number of the newer plates — the blue-and-gold variety — have been delaminating or having their printed surface peel off, which can render the plates unreadable to toll devices, and can prompt a traffic ticket. Currently, DMV will replace peeling plates at no charge. Vogel voiced criticism over how the plan was rolled out — without input from county

clerks, the supervisors of county-run DMV offices or state legislators. “This will be a nightmare for us in terms of our operations,” she said, noting that DMV offices across the state are already “swamped” with people seeking the new enhanced driver’s licenses that will be required for plane travel and entrance into federal buildings as of next October. Holding up a press photo of a long line outside a Manhattan state DMV office — where citizens were waiting up to four hours just to conduct routine business — she said her Warren County DMV office wouldn’t be able to handle the extra work. “We’ve been extremely busy — about every day since April we’ve had nearly 400 transactions instead of 100 to 200,” she said, noting that issuing the new enhanced driver’s licenses is a multi-step process, requiring two local staff people to comply with federal verification security requirements, as well as getting a photo taken. “Adding the mandatory exchange of many thousands of license plates, it will be a nightmare,” she said. “I don’t know how we’ll be able to handle it.” Provoncha offered a similar view Sept. 4 in his prepared statement. “State DMV continues to pile on the work with no regard to customer service, office functionality or monetary compensation,” he said, noting he had to answer to local

Citizens fill the lobby of Warren County’s DMV office at the county Municipal Center on Sept. 5, waiting to have their motor vehicle and license-related transactions conducted. County Clerk Pam Vogel said that the number of visits to the office have doubled since April, due to the issuance of the new enhanced driver’s licenses that require a multi-step process to obtain. Vogel warned that the pending plan to mandate that older license plates be exchanged — will extend wait times and prompt a “nightmare” backup at DMV offices across the state. Photo by Thom Randall

LGA’s stream-side classes to be enhanced By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | An outdoor education area operated by the Lake George Association in late spring and early fall on village recreation center property is about to become more accommodating for students learning about stream ecology. The students involved will no longer have to stand for 90 minutes to two hours as they learn about methods that ecologists use to determine health of waterways. At their Aug. 19 meeting, The Lake George Village Board approved a request by the Lake George Association to place nine permanent benches and a teaching table near a lean-to and stream on the village land for the outdoor education sessions. The lean-to is a five-minute walk down a trail from the recreation center parking lot, LGA watershed educator Lindsey Kenna said. These outdoor classes have been conducted for about a decade by the LGA for area schools, particularly those located in the Lake George watershed. Conducted for about 1,500 students per year, the classes provide the opportunity for students to assess stream habitat condition as well as catch, identify and quantify macro-invertebrates whose presence indicate whether the host stream is healthy or polluted.
Conducting a stream-side educational session recently on land at the Lake George Village Recreation Center, Lindsey Kenna of the Lake George Association talks to students of South Glens Falls High School about how scientists assess macroinvertebrates to determine health of waterways. Last week, the village board approved Kenna’s request to permanently place benches and a teaching table at the site — to enhance the experience for the 1,500 students who annually attend the sessions, as well as the LGA educators. Courtesy photo Kenna said the benches and table would make the site much more accommodating for environmental education. The benches — planks on 50-pound concrete blocks, would be left up year-round. During winter months, the area would be cordoned off and warning markers would be in place to alert
snowmobilers of their presence to prevent collisions, village Mayor Robert Blais said. The benches and teaching table are to be installed and ready for use the week after labor day. ■
