WARRENSBURG | Town of Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett gazed up at two banners — hanging side-by-side on a utility pole in Pottersville — depicting local veterans Harry Smith Jr. and his father Harry Smith.

“Recognizing people who gave a significant contribution to who we are as a community is important,” Leggett said, noting that hundreds of people, maybe thousands, will see them daily as they drive past — and those images will spark memories, or a feeling of gratitude for their military service. “To see them honored like this — I feel closer to home.”

Minutes earlier on Sept. 11, a group of community leaders and veterans gathered to witness the installation of the banners — the first two to be installed in a Hometown Heroes campaign sponsored by the local VFW Post 5513.

The initiative calls for the banners honoring past and present U.S. military personnel to be displayed along main roadways in the towns of Chester and Horicon.

After the hubbub of the city, the Adirondacks was a refreshing break, and when another Sunoco station — this one even deeper in the woods — came on the market in 2014, Ahmad bought that too. At the exit for Newcomb and North Hudson, it might just have been about the loneliest Sunoco in the east, and after dark the yellow glow of its elevated sign provided a shining beacon of hope for Northway travelers whose gas gauges did pointeth to “E”.

LAKE GEORGE | A recent four-day survey of Lake George for Asian Clams indicates that these mollusks have spread to three new sites in Lake George, joining 24 other sites where the invasive

species has been found.

Asian Clams were discovered at the Fort Ann Beach on the east side of Lake George, at Still Bay Resort and at Sun Castle Resort. These latter two sites are 2.8 and 1.6 miles north of Lake George Village on the west side of the lake.

Harry Smith Jr. served two tours in Viet Nam, from 1968 through 1970, in the U.S. Army. Harry Smith Sr. served in the U.S. Army Air Force from the early 1943 until 1946, in World War II. Harry Jr. attended the installation ceremony, alongside his brothers Dale and Thomas, as well as his sister Cindy and mother Mary Smith who is 90.

“May their service to our country be an inspiration for others to serve, each in their own way.”

As the banners were installed Mary Smith wiped tears from her eyes.

“It’s very nice to have things like this brought out, and our town and community deserve thanks for doing this,” she said.

Dale Smith said that he was pleased that people would drive by and think about the contributions his father and brother made for the nation’s security.

“It’s about time veterans get this type of recogniton,” he said.

During the installation, VFW Post 5523 Commander Harry Brundage conducted a brief ceremony. Post chaplain Jack Watson voiced an invocation after a moment of silence was held to honor those who perished in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“May their service to our country be an inspiration for others to serve, each in their own way,” Watson said, referring to the Pottersville father and son duo.

Three more banners, which are to bear the names and photographic images of local service personnel, are on order, and will be hung in the next half-dozen weeks. The first to be installed is one depicting Harry Bollback, a World War II veteran and co-founder of the World of Life ministries based in Schroon Lake.

The post is now accepting applications for military personnel to included in the recognition campaign. The banners — 20 inches wide and 60 inches tall — are to hang from utility poles in the hamlets of Chestertown, Pottersville, Brant Lake and Adirondack.

Applications are to include proof of Honorable Discharge, a copy of military orders and a photo of a service member, the honoree’s proof of residency, former residency or local graduation — and a check for $225. Outright donations to the project are also welcome, Brundage said. Post 5513 may in certain circumstances contribute toward the cost of a banner, he added. Honorees can be living or deceased. the Asian Clam population in the lake. Such clam control methods included covering claim-infested lake-bottom areas with specialized mats to lower the oxygen levels and suppress clam propagation, but the sites repopulated over time.

Wick said that Asian Clams are a warm-water species that die off each winter, and their population rebounds when the water warms up in late spring.

Some sites, however retain high populations of clams, and other areas experience severe die-offs.

Wick said that biologists believe that those clams most adapted to cold weather are the ones surviving each year, and when they reproduce, the next generation of clams will also likely be cold-tolerant. This factor may lead to increased future clam populations in Lake George, he said, noting that Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Darrin Freshwater Institute is continuing to conduct research on the Asian Clams in Lake George.

“Although it’s unfortunate that we found three new sites of Asian Clams, its not unexpected on the southwest shores where there are a number of sandy beaches — hopefully the numbers don’t increase a lot anytime soon,” he said. “The good news is we haven’t seen any major recreational or water-quality issues yet due to the clams, and we hope it remains that way in the future.”

Surveyors worked for four days using handheld sieves to sift through lake-bottom sand relatively near the shoreline in this lake-wide investigation.

At Still Bay Resort, 1 to 3 clams were found in each sieve; at Sun Castle, 10 clams or more were found in each sieve.

The work was accomplished on three days in late August and on Sept. 5 by volunteers as well as representatives of environmental organizations and staff members of the Lake George Park Commission, which coordinated the effort.

At Fort Ann Beach, only one clam was found out of 100 sieves. Park Commission executive director Dave Wick said that more clams are likely in water deeper than near the beach.

These three sites join 24 others where Asian Clams have been discovered in Lake George over the last 10 years. Most of the sites of infestation are on the western shore in the southern stretch of the lake — areas which are the most developed.

Asian Clams have also been discovered at Roger’s Rock Campground, Hague Brook Delta and two resorts on the western shore of the northern end of the 32-mile-long lake.

Another infestation has been found across the Lake from these four sites offshore from Glenburnie, a development of cottages on Blair’s Bay. After the initial discovery in 2010 of Asian Clams at Lake Avenue Beach in Lake George Village, a task force was formed and they researched and implemented methods of reducing

the Northway to stay at the state campground just to the south. It would provide information for those beginning their Adirondack adventure, perhaps hosting an outfitter and a tack shop for equestrians at the campground. Other plans include, potentially, a restaurant and conference center, or as a venue for events.

Ahmad said he’s been brainstorming ideas with the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Open Space Institute. I’m working with them to see what’s best,” he said.

Frontier Town — because nothing says “Adirondacks” like cowboys and Indians — was a popular westernthemed tourist attraction and many in the region still remember going there as children and being frightened by train and stagecoach robberies.

The A-Frame was built in 1960; the park closed in 1998. Although the state campground has taken the Frontier Town moniker, the actual Frontier Town site was not included in the project, which is designed to be a joint publicprivate partnership.

Since the campground itself is not visible from the Northway, Ahmad said the A-frame will be a key piece of the development. “The hard part is getting people off of the Interstate,” he said.

“This will be its face.” ■

OLMSTEDVILLE | Although Each year, in the middle of May, Diane Colletti enters her greenhouse and begins a process that will culminate five months later when legions of people from multiple states across the Northeast somehow find their way to Olmstedville, a scattered collection of buildings deep in the Adirondack forest.

Raising pumpkins in the mountains is both a marathon and a sprint. Colletti sets out her pumpkins the second week in June, but even so she has to make sure she has enough redundancy in case the first wave suffers a calamity like a late frost. That means planting 6,000 pumpkins that will be set out along a broad sunny hillside at It’s About Thyme Farm owned by Colletti and her husband Steve.

Pumpkins take anywhere from 85 to 125 days to mature (and add to that a 10-day acclimation period when the plants go from greenhouse to outdoor soil), so variety is critical when trying to squeeze a long-term plant into a short-term season. Fortunately, there are some fast-maturing plants that still produce big fruit, and by the time Labor Day rolls around, pumpkins on the sunny hillside are beginning to take on good color.

The result is one of the region’s few, if not the only, pick-your-own pumpkin patches, which delights kids young and old. Some are

local, and have offered Colletti advice on the tricky business of gardening in Zone 4. Others are from the city, where pick your own means selecting from among hundreds of pumpkins that have been trucked in from outlying farms.

Many have never seen an authentic “patch.”

“They’ll be tiptoeing among the vines, asking ‘what is all this green stuff ?’” Colletti said.

In turn, she has been appreciative of members of the community who have helped her learn the ropes as she has expanded her offerings. Fertilizer, for example, is critical to for fall mums, a staple in any fall farm store.

One advisor, Colletti said, told her “Even if there is a flood and the mums are floating away, chase them down the river with the fertilizer.”

The Adirondacks are picturesque in all seasons, but fall is the money shot, and the reason so many people can be counted upon to travel through remote towns and hamlets, stopping at It’s About Thyme on their leafpeeping ventures. Colletti offers a full service fall farm store, not just with pumpkins, but with hayrides, creepy trails and free cider and donuts on the weekends. Along with traditional pumpkins, there are all manner of nontraditional shapes, sizes and colors.

There are apples from 400 trees, halloween costumes, decorations and, of course, a full array of fall mums.

amusements, relying on donation bucket to pay for the gas it takes for the hayrides.

She wants to be sure no family is unable to participate for a lack of money. And if the mums aren’t costing her more to grow, Colletti doesn’t raise her prices year to year.

The farm has become a staple in the community in other ways, too. Each spring, just a few weeks before it’s time to plant the pumpkins, the Collettis put on an Easter egg hunt at Minerva Central School. They prepare 250 Easter baskets, 5,000 eggs and an array of prizes and treats. Symbolic of the eclectic nature of the farm is a small gym (complete with an indoor basketball hoop) that Steve built for their kids. Just prior to the fall season, it was lined with shelves and shelves of Easter baskets, while under the hoop were a half-dozen bicycle-riding skeletons awaiting creepy trail duty.

The Collettis owned and operated a restaurant in northern New Jersey on Sept. 11, 2001, when hijacked airliners slammed into the Twin Towers. “We could see the smoke from the beach and feel the soot coming down,” Colletti said. “Wives of firefighters were sitting in the restaurant waiting to hear if their husbands were still alive.”

The community was a commuter area for Manhattan, and many of their kids’ friends lost parents in the attack.

For the Collettis it was a wake-up call. Life was too short, and life in the city too uncertain.

They began to poke around for property in the northern wildlands where they were fond of vacationing — Maine, New Hampshire and the Adirondacks. Their requirements were few: a level driveway and a flat yard. Still, in the mountains, those assets weren’t always easy to find. The family settled on a camp that had evolved in quintessential fashion. It was a barn that was converted into a house, with rooms added on as the need arose.

Initially, a full-blown farm wasn’t part of the grand design. Steve began his current job of installing ponds and salt-water aquariums, and Diane started catering banquets at the Sagamore Resort. “We say that we moved and brought our hobbies with us.” she said. One of those hobbies, learned from her grandmother, was gardening. Steve built a greenhouse — and it was an impressive enough greenhouse that people began to stop, assuming there

No one else was sure the purchase made sense, and those who had tried to make a go of the gas station before had failed.

It was in the middle of the North Hudson woods, and its only visible company from the Interstate was a sorry looking assemblage of structures across the street, including an oversized A-frame.

In front of it all was a metal sign in faded red cowboy lettering that said “Frontier Town.”

Ahmad said last month that he wasn’t listening — why would he be? — to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 2017 State of the State address, when the governor made Exit 29, the site of the Sunoco, the hottest piece of property in the ADK. Exit 29, the governor said, was to become a recreational hub, the gateway to the southern Adirondacks High Peaks’ region — with millions of dollars of state investment and legions of gasoline-buying tourists to follow.

Ahmad said he learned of the state’s plans from friends who were dazzled by his savvy business acquisition, and were offering to buy the gas station. “Now everyone thinks I’m a genius, which I am not,” he said. “I was just lucky.”

But luck will not be a factor if his latest acquisition works out — last year

Ahmad bought 50 acres that is home to the bedraggled A-frame and some other ramshackle elements of the old theme park for $425,000.

Ahmad is excited about the potential for the A-frame, and said he wants to renovate it rather than tear it down and start over.

“It’s solid,” he said, rapping a knuckle on the massive tee-pee shaped beams that line the A-frame’s roof. The floor is good too. And it still has the vestiges of a McDonald’s restaurant that for a few years occupied one corner of the complex. Most of its shortcomings are cosmetic.

The A-frame is a symbol of the Past, and Ahmad said he wants to honor it.

Ahmad also said he wants to be true to the theme park, incorporating historical elements in the redesign and perhaps using one section for a Frontier Town museum. He also hopes to revive a scale railroad that was one of the more popular Frontier Town features in its day. Although weathered, much of the landing where people would wait for train rides remains.

Frontier Town, he said, “was something that was unique.” He wants to stoke the memories of visitors from the past and create new memories for people who come in the future.

was something plant-related to buy. To accommodate these people, they opened a farm stand. It was all pretty informal until 2006 when, returning home after midnight from a catering job at the Sagamore, Diane had a bad accident on a washed out road. “I wasn’t too fond of traveling after that,” she said.

The farm has grown by leaps and bounds ever since. Diane said she has to be careful what she wishes for, because her husband tends to take musings literally. When she mentioned she liked the look of hand-blown glass, Steve “signed me up for classes and built me a studio,” she said.

Her hand-blown globes, jewelry, figurines, icicles and ornaments are now featured in a gift shop that includes the popular metal yard art and other items of Adirondack farm-chic decor.

Styles come and go, but different people have firmly held ideas about what they like and what they don’t. “I’m always amazed at some of the stuff that sells,” Colletti said.

“Everybody definitely has a mind of their own.”

But whether it’s her particular taste or not, it all makes her happy. “We came here and took up the things we enjoyed,” Colletti said. “Luckily we made it happen.” ■ It’s About Thyme Farm is located at 32 Smith Road in Olmstedville, NY. Adk. Balloon fest returns this weekend

QUEENSBURY | Renowned for its family-friendly vibe, the Adirondack Balloon Festival is scheduled to occur this weekend as its 47th annual edition is held in Queensbury and Glens Falls.

At no other festival can spectators see dozens of colorful hot-air balloons take flight — and get close enough to help a pilot and crew launch their craft.

There is no admission fee to the Adirondack Balloon Festival, which has charmed generations of people from across northeastern U.S.. Attracting more than 100,000 people to the region each year, the event is considered the largest balloon festival on the nation’s east coast.

Set for Thursday Sept. 19 through Sunday Sept. 22, this year’s festival features a dozen or so fancifully shaped craft among the 100-plus balloons from across the U.S. and Canada scheduled to participate.

With all activities free of charge, the

festival kicks off at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Crandall Park in Glens Falls with a performance by rock group The Lustre Kings, followed by an opening ceremony at 5 p.m., with a liftoff of 20 or more balloons thereafter.

From 6 to 9 p.m., Glens Falls will be hosting a downtown balloon fest block party, which includes a car show with lots of classic vehicles, balloon baskets on display and children’s activities.

By Dan Alexander Ever since the day after our last presidential election, the Democrats have been resisting the current administration with every conceivable approach they can muster.

Try as they have, nothing they’ve tried nor has anything the media reported derailed his administration, yet.

Democrats anxious to impeach President Donald Trump scored a modest victory of sorts recently when the House Judiciary Committee voted to launch a formal investigation that resulted in the adoption of articles of impeachment for consideration by the full House.

Despite being far from the 218 votes they’d need to pass the articles of impeachment, a majority of House Democrats now favor launching a formal inquiry.

Still, other lawmakers, even those who support the effort, seem unsure any of the multitudes of offenses they believe Trump has committed would make the strongest case for his removal. That uncertainty over the exact target of a potential impeachment remains the major obstacle in this effort.

Depending on your perspective, Democrats in the House, have failed to win over the broader public opinion despite the support of the left-leaning national media outlets.

For many months, the debate over impeachment had centered on the allegations that finally came out of the two-year Mueller investigation.

But Muller’s failure to pursue the president’s indictment or to specifically recommend action

by Congress has prompted some impeachment supporters to argue that there are better targets for the Judiciary Committee to pursue.

Last week when President Trump fired his National Security Advisor John Bolten, an appointment Democrats railed over when he was first named and continued to claim he was far too extreme. After his firing they claimed Bolten was a stable influence on the president and his firing was a sign of grave instability for the country.

Proving the one thing consistent in the Democrats efforts; When you are a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Unfortunately, the Democrats haven’t found the perfect nail in the haystack to put into Trump’s presidency, yet still, they persist.

As we move closer to the 2020 campaign, it would seem more fertile ground would be found putting up a formidable Democrat candidate to defeat Trump and rally the country to get behind all their candidates instead of looking back to undo the 2016 election.

It’s time for the voters to decide if Trump should remain or be removed from the White House.

If Trump wins re-election, the Democrats may find they’ve wasted two years of House control seeking his removal, and the American public may not look favorably upon those efforts when it comes time to pull voting levers for congressional candidates. ■

September. Prostate cancer in its early stages may cause no signs or symptoms.

However, more advanced stages may lead to trouble urinating, discomfort in the pelvic area and bone pain - in addition to other symptoms. If you have any of these symptoms, you should talk to your doctor as they could be a sign of cancer or another health problem.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that men between ages 55-69 talk to their doctor about their risk for prostate cancer and whether or not they should be screened. The task force does not recommend screening for men age 70 and older. Risks for prostate cancer include family history, race or ethnicity, and other medical conditions.

Screening for prostate cancer can pose health risks and it should only be done after discussing potential benefits and harms of screening with your doctor.

If your doctor recommends getting screened for prostate cancer, two options are available. One is a blood test called a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test. Men’s prostates make PSA and if your level of PSA is high, it could be an indicator of prostate cancer or another health condition such as an

While most of us would rather not even think about our risks for cancer, we must be proactive to combat this insidious disease. For men, prostate cancer is especially prevalent, affecting 1 in every 7 men during his lifetime. The prostate is only about the size of a walnut, but it is an important organ. The good news is that if the cancer is localized to the prostate, the prognosis is positive. If detected early enough, there is a nearly 100% five-year relative survival rate – but if it progresses to the advanced stage, the number drops down to 30%.

While people may know little about prostate cancer, it’s important that North Country residents have the ability to recognize its symptoms, allowing for prevention and early intervention. That’s why organizations like the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the American Cancer Society promote research and spread knowledge during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, which is

On Friday, the festival moves to the Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Queensbury, where gates open at 3 p.m. for such attractions as a craft fair, vendors, and family activities. A concert featuring Kevin McKrell and Orion Kribs is slated for 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. A launch of 80 or more balloons is to be held at 5 p.m.

On Saturday and Sunday at the airport, activities and breakfast begin at 5 a.m. Eighty to 100 balloons — including specially shaped craft — lift off beginning at about 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. both days. Vendors open up early and continue all day.

On Saturday, children’s activities include bounce houses, crafts and games; while musical entertainment features the group Pluck & Rail as well as the High Peaks Bluegrass Band.

These performances begin at 2:30 and 5:00 p.m. respectively.

Saturday at 8 p.m. is the “Moonglow” event which features up to 100 balloons lighting up the night sky.

Sunday’s 6:30 a.m. launch, titled “Walt’s Mass Ascension,” features up to 100 balloons launching simultaneously to honor the festival’s renowned founder, the late Walter Grishkot.

All flights are weather permitting.

The specially shaped balloons at this year’s festival include “Allycorn the Unicorn.” crafted in Brazil; and other craft depicting a lion, koala bear, a cheetah, and a flying squirrel, as well as Billy the kid.

Annually, the balloon liftoffs at the airport are so eagerly anticipated that they prompt spectators to get out of bed at 4 a.m. or earlier to get to the airport in time to beat the crowds.

The action at the airport includes a craft fair, concessions to benefit local charities, kite flying, and church services on Sunday morning.

Dogs, smoking, drones and remote-controlled aircraft are barred from the festival sites on all four days.

The festival concludes with Sunday’s 5 p.m. launch of about two dozen balloons in Glens Falls’ Crandall Park. For two hours beforehand, the Beatles tribute group “Across the Pond” will be providing musical entertainment. ■

To the Editor: The new cat law passed by the City of Plattsburgh to deal with feral cats is requires a microchip be implanted in cats so that their owner can be identified. Other local municipalities would be wise to consider a similar law. However, the City law does not go nearly far enough. It is imperative to identify the criminal cats and to track them down. There needs to be a data base obtain maintained (electronically though the chip) that lists all offenses, ranking from misdemeanors, such as wandering onto a neighbor’s property, to more serious offenses such as pooping on a neighboring property, or (god forbid) mortally injuring a chipmunk or other small rodent. The most egregious of all of course is attacking a songbird. To ensure that the criminal cat can be apprehended and appropriately dealt with, a cat court must be established. The cat should be entitled to a fair hearing for all offenses on its “rap sheet”, and the owner may plead in its defense. But all this is still not enough. All cat owners must have synchronized chips implanted in their heads in order to monitor their cats should they somehow escape or stray beyond their property limits. The Adirondack mountains are highly popular with outdoor enthusiasts, but that popularity comes at a cost.

Adirondack Council says the mountains have their ups and downs

ELIZABETHTOWN | Hiking a trail or paddling a pond on a weekday in September, everything Adirondack seems well and good, joyful even, just as it has for generations of outdoor enthusiasts.

But in its annual State of the Park publication, the Adirondack Council, an Elizabethtown environmental advocacy group, warns that the underpinnings of the park are coming loose, risking permanent damage if the problems are not addressed.

“The Park looks like a success,” wrote Willie Janeway, the council’s executive director. “The maps show lands as protected. Government says it supports protecting clean water, air and wildlands.

Everyone says they support the Park. The science shows otherwise. The Adirondack Park is so popular that overuse is harming wilderness and communities.”

The report states that overuse and under-planning continue to plague popular Keene Valley trailheads. The state seems fixated on throwing money at community development, while the park and park personnel go begging. Leaders are insisting on a motorized trail through the heart of the forest, ATVs continue to shred sensitive ecology, the Adirondack Park Agency is in flux, salt and sewage are threatening the water, and without mandatory boat washing, invasive species remain a constant threat.

The report indicates that there has been good news over the past year as well.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Department of Environmental Conservation have acknowledged overuse as a serious threat, and are incrementally moving in the right direction. The report notes parking restrictions designed to cut down on the number of hikers to the most popular peaks, but says it was done in a vacuum without consideration of the role the rest of the park is to play as crowds and destinations shift.

The governor and legislature also win accolades for their big-picture approach to the environment, with expansive climatechange law and an upcoming ban on plastic bags. And if it was stingy on park spending, the state was generous to Adirondack communities, where it sent more than $400 million in aid, the report says.

Other victories in the park were won by groups such as the Adirondack Land Trust, which protected 600 acres in the Fourpeaks area in Jay and Wilmington, adjoining the popular Hardy Road mountain biking trail network; the Northeast Wilderness Trust, which saved the 2,400acre Eagle Mountain tract between the Taylor Pond and Jay Mountain forests; the Ausable River Association for demolition of the Rome Dam in AuSable Forks; and the Protect the Adirondacks environmental group, which released a comprehensive study debunking the myth that the Forest Preserve is an economic burden.

Other landmarks were also achieved, including the opening of Boreas Ponds and the state’s acceptance of overuse as a problem in need of best-management practices as enumerated by the council: comprehensive planning; education and outreach; improved parking, information centers, and bathroom; improved trails and campsites; limits on use, at some times, at some places; and increases in staff and funding.

But while the state may have acknowledged the problem, the report indicates it has done little to help. The DEC is understaffed at all levels, and has not to date acted on reservation or permitting systems that would limit use.

The report is critical of the DEC for being overly accepting of tree cutting on the forest preserve, and failing to do all it could to discourage motors from encroaching on protected lands.

It also criticizes the DEC for bullying the Adirondack Park Agency, which it sees as losing influence due to vacant seats on the board, a leadership void and a growing tendency to rubber-stamp the proposals of the bigger and better-funded DEC. “The APA’s 56 staff members are supposed to act as a check on the DEC’s authority to manage the Forest Preserve,” the report states. “Rather than respect the APA’s independence, the DEC leaned on the agency to approve Unit Management Plans (UMPs) that undermine state policies requiring natural resource protection to take precedence over intensive use.” ■

BEAUTY ABOUNDS IN STONY CREEK

Miss Gladys Ryther was crowned in a voting contest conducted by L.F. Lynch, a Stony Creek merchant, extending over a period of several weeks. Miss Ryther, by a majority of more than two to one, has been declared the prettiest girl in the town.

The votes for the four leading candidates were as follows, Gladys Ryther, 343, Geneva Fuller, 160, Theresa Hull, 133 and Mildred Gill, 124. Other young ladies entered in the contest were Myrtle Harris, Viola Baker, Majority Fry, Myrtle Brooks, Durella Camp, Margaret Arehart and Alberta Murray.

Mr. Lynch presented Miss Ryther with five dollars as the first prize. Two dollars was given to Miss Fuller and a box of chocolates went to Miss Hull.

Considerable interest was given to the contest as is indicated by the number of votes which were cast. Miss Ryther is the

daughter of Warren Ryther. She is considered to be one of the most attractive girls in Warren County, possessing an almost perfect figure, large full eyes and a beautiful head of hair. She enjoys the friendship and admiration of the townspeople and is noted locally for her personal beauty.

Miss Geneva Fuller is the daughter of Chub Fuller. Miss Theresa Hull is the granddaughter of Edward Hull and Miss Myrtle Gill is the daughter of Chester Gill.

(Note …On July 20th and Aug. 10, 2019, in this column, I wrote about Maud Ryther, 19, the sister of Gladys Ryther who traveled to New York City to work as a domestic and came up missing soon there after.

Her father, Warren Ryther heard that she had been seen in Vermont, probably recognized because she was beautiful and had a large birthmark on her cheek. Immediately, on Aug. 4, 1919, he went there in an effort to locate her and at that was the last the newspaper wrote on the subject.

The Ryther family I found to be very

interesting and I would be happy to hear from any reader with knowledge as to what ever became of these special girls.)

TOUGH MEAT ON THE HOOF

A 3-year-old bull owned by L.W. Brooks of Stony Creek, was butchered by George Brown and when it was dressed it weighed 600 pounds.

The bull was purchased at Lake George recently by George and John Fodder who, when leading him, narrowly escaped serious injury when the enraged animal attacked the brothers as they were heading toward home and George was thrown in a ditch. (Note – George obviously got his revenge even if he had to hold his dinner fork in his left hand.)

I recently heard that my good friend, plumbing and heating man, Phil Coletti, casually walked into a 2019 Stony Creek Town Board meeting and when he came out, he was surprised to find himself recruited as a newly elected member of the board. The town board is indeed lucky to have him and in my opinion they could not have chosen a better man for the job.)

Sports North Warren eyeing a solid season

WARRENSBURG | Despite experiencing a loss of athletes to the football program now offered at their school, the North Warren boys soccer team is holding their own as they delve into their 2019 schedule.

North Warren began offering its students football this year through a merged program with Warrensburg. Although this new venture has been a considerable success to date, sports fans in northern Warren County have aired concerns that with a half-dozen Cougar athletes choosing football, the prospects of the school’s boys soccer team would be compromised.

So far this season, however, the soccer squad has demonstrated that they have plenty of talent and can be quite competitive in Adirondack League play.

As of Sept. 16, the Cougars were 2-0 in the league and 2-1 overall, but coach Rob Smith said he and his team weren’t getting overconfident.

“We’re certainly happy with the way the season has started, but we’re not getting too excited about two wins — we’ve got a tough row to hoe ahead of us,” he said. “There’s a great deal of parity this year in the league — Not one team is a pushover.”

with two goals and an assist. Eduardo Hernandez, Ryan Miller and Tom Conway each scored a goal in the hard-fought victory.

For Bolton-Warrensburg, Dante Corriveau and Dan Cunniffe each scored a goal. Conner Jennings tallied 8 saves for the Cougars, while Marvin Dobert had 15 saves for the Eagles.

On Sept. 12, North Warren demonstrated their offensive prowess by burying Granville by a score of 6-1.

North Warren commanded an early 3-0 lead with goals from Tom Conway, Jacob Smith, and Dominic Giordano. Granville countered in the 33rd minute when Brad Lamb slammed a ball over the goalie’s head into the net.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle, as Cougar goalie Connor Jennings and his Granville counterpart compiled more than 10 saves each throughout the game. North Warren wore down their opponents in the second half, as Conway, Hernandez and Jaden Smith scored the insurance goals.

Coach Smith said he was pleased with the teamwork that his athletes have exhibited so far this season.

“I’m happy that we’ve had seven different players score so far — they’ve spread the ball around well — there’s not too much individualism on the team.”

Smith added that strengthening the defense has been a main objective recently.

“Several of our guys traditionally played offense, but were moved back into a defensive posture — and they’ve accepted that role and flourished.” ■

Warriors’ early season success exceeds expectations

LAKE GEORGE | The Lake George boys soccer team is headed into its 2019 schedule undefeated at 4-0, repeating a similar script of the prior year’s team which enjoyed a 14-0 regular season record.

Coach Blake White said he was “a little surprised” but “very pleased” that his team had an undefeated record, as of Sept. 16, after graduating a lot of talented seniors last June.

“We had a lot of depth last year, so a lot of very talented players didn’t play as much as the starters, and they are hungry — taking advantage of the opportunity and playing hard this year,” he said. “They’ve seen what it takes to work as a team and be successful.”

The Warriors demonstrated their potential Sept. 14 as they won the championship of the Mayfield Soccer Tournament with a 3-1 victory over undefeated Greenwich in the finals — after beating Greenfield in the opening round a week earlier.

Against Greenwich, Lake George scored in the second minute of the game when Owen Sutton passed the ball to near the goal to Ethan Knauf who hit a shot into the side netting.

Late in the first half, Lake George added to their lead when Poe Tutu fed the ball to Justin Blanco into the box and Blanco kicked the ball into the goal.

Later, a Greenwich player ended up on the ground in the penalty box, and AJ Rymph of Greenwich sank a penalty kick. Two minutes afterwards, Lake George responded when Knauf passed the ball from the side to Brandon Willard — near the goal —who scored with a solid kick.

Coach Blake White said that Warrior Sam Knauf was a force in the middle of the field for Lake George, whose players made 21 shots on goal to the Witches’ nine. Named to the All-Tournament Team for Lake George were Sutton, Ethan Knauf, Justin Blanco and goalkeeper Kristian “Yogi” Johnson.

A week earlier, Lake George defeated Greenville 4-2 in the first round of the Mayfield tournament.

Halfway through the period, the Warriors struck again as Paul Lindsay kicked a crossfield pass to Ethan Knauf, who shot it into the goal for a 2-0 lead. Greenville countered two minutes later with a goal, but with seconds remaining in the period, Sam Knauf’s service kick bounced off Ethan’s head, glancing into the goal. Greenville responded with a goal halfway through the second period with their own goal, but the Warriors advanced the score to 4-2 as Paul Lindsay scored with 11:15 left to play.

On Sept. 13, Lake George defeated Corinth 4-0.

The Lake George players kept possession of the ball through much of the game, but Corinth put up a good fight, turning back many of the Warriors’ advances.

Six minutes in the left in the half, Ethan Knauf passed to Ethan Gereau, who battled the Corinth defenders at the net and scored the game’s first goal. In the second half, Lake George ramped up their passing game and scored their second goal when Sam Knauf weaved through Corinth defenders and kicked the ball into the corner of the net. Twenty-five

minutes into the second half, Gereau scored his

second goal of the day off a pass from Poe Tutu.

Later in the game, Tutu shot the fourth and final goal in the shutout of Corinth off a pass from Freddy Weidner. Lake George Goaltender Kristian “Yogi” Johnson was resolute through the game, as demonstrated in a leaping save near the contest’s conclusion and preserved the team’s second shutout of 2019, White said.

On Sept. 11, defeated Hartford 3-0. Scoring in this shutout were Sam Knauf with a first half goal and Owen Sutton with two successive scores. Assists were accomplished by Paul Lindsay on the latter two goals.

Coach White credited his defensive line of Patrick Huber, Garrett Dunsmore, Colby Seguljic, Ian Gillman, and Jackson Baker for helping Johnson achieve his first varsity shutout. Burghers set new school scoring record in win over Cohoes

On Sept. 13 against Cohoes, the 2019 linemen cleared the field for 14 of their running backs to gain a total of 506 yards in a record-setting 78-6 victory — which followed their 64-0 season-opener the prior week against Helderberg Valley.

The Burghers ran for 506 yards and averaged 15-plus yards per carry in this game, which is believed to set a new scoring record for the school.

No pass play was even attempted in the Burghers’ offensive onslaught.

Although the running backs were in the spotlight, the offensive line — repopulated with new players after losing most of the veterans to graduation in June — were efficient in clearing the way for the ball carriers, coach Mike Perrone said.

“Cohoes tried a couple of different defenses against us, but our entire line communicated, adjusted, and were very successful at blocking,” he said. “It was just a great team effort.”

The Burghers scored 32 points in the first quarter, then benched their first string and sent their freshmen and sophomores onto the field — and the younger players continued the record-setting scoring tirade for the remainder of the game.

Perrone said the experience gained by the underclassmen over the remaining 36 minutes of game time would be valuable over the rest of the season.

“To play as much as they did will help us later this year,” he said, noting the depth of the team’s talent will be fortified.

Standout sophomore running back Dylan Winchell ran for 132 yards — in only three plays, scoring two touchdowns on runs of 25 and 30 yards respectively.

“This kind of yardage per play shows how explosive Winchell is when he touches the football,” Perrone said.

touchdown run. Baker also recovered a Cohoes fumble in the end zone for an additional touchdown early in the game.

Scoring a touchdown in the first stanza, besides Baker and Winchell, was senior Jesse Griffin on a three-yard play. Over the next three quarters, scoring were freshman Tristen Hitchcock on a 38 yard run, sophomore Caiden Mosher on a 3-yard run, junior Zach Carpenter for 2 yards, freshman Landon Olden for 4 yards, and Carpenter finishing off the game with a 12-yard scramble.

In addition to Winchell and Baker, groundgainers were Olden with 56 yards; Griffin and Hitchcock with 52 yards each; juniors Jordan Mallory with 31 yards and Anthony Girard with 29 yards; senior Thomas Moore tallying 19 yards; sophomore Caiden Mosher gaining 16 yards; Carpenter following with 15 yards; and sophomore Andrew Beadnell with 10 yards. Seniors Jaron Griffin, Jacob Clear and Bill Cameron also contributed yardage.

All but one of the Burghers’ conversion attempts were successful, each adding two points — they were scored by Griffin, Baker, Olden, Winchell, Girard, Moore and Carpenter.

“Considering we have so many new football players, we’re really happy were 2-0 at this point,” Perrone said. “But our schedule is tough from here on out — and we’re not satisfied — we have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be.” ■

NEWCOMB | Newcomb continued its annual Teddy Roosevelt Weekend tradition Sept. 6-8.

The festivities included several events around town.

These included: a craft vendor show, fly fishing demonstrations, games and activities for the family, supper with Teddy Roosevelt at the Newcomb Central School, and the anticipated return of Joe Wiegand, as Teddy Roosevelt, to the Newcomb Historical Museum, where he gave a local speech on traveling through Newcomb to become the 26th President. After the speech, locals gathered around and took their turn to shake the “president’s” hand and give him some words of their own.

The Newcomb Historical Museum was packed full with visitors streaming out the corridor between 4 and 4:30 pm Sept. 7, to listen to Joe Wiegand, as Teddy Roosevelt. His tone, inflection, speech pattern and accent were remarkable.

Photo by Laura Achouatte Wiegand as Teddy gave his historical recount of the President’s “midnight ride” from the Marcy Wilderness to Newcomb where he took time to change horses, and then, ultimately, travel to North Creek to catch the train to Buffalo for his inauguration after the death by assassination of the 25th president, William McKinley.

He stopped at the Tahawus Post Office and at the Aiden Lair Lodge to take a break and change horses on the 35 mile trip that took approximately 7 hours in daylight by horse and buggy.

National expert to discuss Lyme disease WARRENSBURG | The Lyme Action Network in collaboration with the Thurman community will help clarify understandings and misunderstandings about Lyme disease in a presentation entitled “What You need to Know About Lyme and Other Tick-borne Diseases.”

Holly Ahern, associate professor of microbiology at SUNY Adirondack, and co-founder and vice president of the Lyme Action Network, is a science advisor and nationally recognized expert on Lyme disease. She will discuss the history and politics of Lyme disease as well as current research and clinical findings, prevention, the biology of ticks and the diseases they carry and the problems surrounding diagnosis and treatment.

This presentation takes place on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the Thurman Town Hall, 311 Athol Rd. in Athol. It is a free event, and is open to the public on a first-come basis. ■

Long Boat Regatta competition attracts paddlers

LONG LAKE | This year’s Long Boat Regatta will feature the North American War Canoe Championship, a 15-mile-long race on Long Lake. Other races will be a 10-mile Adirondack Kayak Championship, a 15-mile C-4 marathon, and 10-mile canoe, guideboat and “Anything Goes” races for youths and adults.

Carter said, “I wanted to come up here and present this great man with one of my walking sticks that I make.”

Carter presented Joe Wiegand a tall walking stick engraved with Roosevelt’s name on the stick and the two shook hands as Wiegand accepted the gift graciously.

Carter also pointed to a few news articles preserved in plastic sleeves that were laid out on display at the museum. The articles were from several news outlets including The Times, which depicted the story through photographs and reports that Carter, himself, was a part of in Newcomb in the 1970s. Carter was one of the men on the search party of nearly 400 men that searched for missing Douglas Legg in the Santanoni wilderness in 1971.

The 8 year old boy was never found after nearly 30 days of scouring the park.

“It was really hard, I can still remember the police coming to me to get reports, and (pointing to a photo of a search helicopter) I got to ride in that. But, we never found him, we looked all over,” said Carter reminiscing at the museum.

After the walk down memorable moments of Newcomb’s past, the public was invited to have a “Foreign Affairs at the Roundtable” discussion with “Teddy Roosevelt” over supper at the Newcomb Central School. ■
