Lake George town leaders air concerns about EMS future

LAKE GEORGE | Citing concerns about the future of local emergency medical services, Lake George town board members have proposed granting employment benefits to local emergency medical personnel. At their Sept. 4 meeting, town leaders discussed how the roster of volunteers in the Lake George Emergency Squad is continuing to dwindle, and that the town government needs to assure that adequate EMS personnel is on duty, ready to respond to emergencies. GLENS FALLS | Balloon pilot B.J. Sullivan of Nashville pulled a lever and a 12-feet-long propane flame blasted into the opening of his hot-air balloon, with his crew members holding tight to several tethers to keep it it in place. Shrieking in mock fright, dozens of children ran away from the pulsating, gigantic balloon which was inflating — rolling over the grass of Crandall Park in

Glens Falls on Sept. 19, the opening day of the four-day Adirondack Balloon Festival. Sullivan’s balloon was the fi rst craft to take off during this event, which annually draws people from all over the northeast U.S.. This year, the four-day event drew a record crowd of more than 150,000 people, Adirondack Balloon Festival Director Mark Donahue told the media as the event neared its conclusion on Sunday. Village public works chief retiring; Lanfear to take on post LAKE GEORGE | The person overseeing all of Lake George Village’s infrastructure is retiring and his associate of recent years will be taking over his position. Lake George Village Public Works Superintendent Dave Harrington, 53, is retiring as of Nov. 1 — and Keith Lanfear, his assistant, is taking over Harrington’s post. At the village board’s Sept. 16 meeting, the village accepted Harrington’s resignation “with regret,” but they had known for six months or so that it was pending. Since early this year, Harrington has been familiarizing Lanfear with the duties that he is about to undertake. Harrington has been a Lake George Village employee for 26 years. DON’T MISS THESE 2019 FALL EVENTS:

An Adirondack winding road tunnels through the changing leaves in their color-splendor.

ADIRONDACKS | Fall is when the world is full of crisp perfection, the air is clean and clear, the sky a vivid blue, and the leaves are exploding into a thousand shades of yellows, oranges and crimsons. We are tracking the progress of this beautiful fall foliage to help travelers in search of an optimal weekend or mid-week getaway to soak in the Adirondacks’ picturesque autumn locations. Reports are obtained from our field observers and reflect expected color conditions for

the upcoming weekend. The best part is, because we have eight regions located at various elevations, visitors can experience peak colors between late September to mid-October, depending on your Adirondack destination. Whether driving down a scenic highway or backroad, paddling on a crystal clear lake surrounded by trees decked out in shades of crimson, oranges and yellows; or viewing the fall leaves from atop one of our many mountains, there are myriad of colorful ways to

In a visit to this class last week, four of the five students enrolled in the class were present, working intently on developing several prototypes for the new website. Pede said the versions are likely to be ready for evaluation by school officials by January. Working on the project are high school students Helena Williams, Matthew Olden, Jonathan Lorensen, Erin Corr and Brian Hewitt, Pede said, noting that the project involves installing and activating a local computer server. “The end goal is for these students to be managing the website, uploading content including events, text and photos,” he said. The instruction in computer repair is presently focusing on rehabilitating the Chromebooks that the school district distributes to each of its students, from second grade through grade 12, for their academic use. Johnsburg Central Superintendent Michael Markwica said that the new high-school STEM courses are an extension of the school district’s relatively new “Makers’ Space” elementary classes in which young students explore STEM subjects — various topics and hands-on projects on a rotating basis — with a minimum amount of teacher direction. “We’re mimicking this approach on a higher level for the older students,” Markwica said. “In David Pede’s STEM classes, students are encouraged to discover and learn on their own.”

Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson said that although leaders of towns in northern Warren County have expressed interest in establishing a regional EMS entity, the proposal — which could assure 2 4/7 coverage through pooled resources — remains a concept, perhaps years away from reality. Dickinson told town board members that although the Warren County EMS task force and town supervisors have held a half-dozen sessions to discuss options for establishing regional EMS services, no substantial decisions have yet been made. “Pooling resources is a good idea — it will save some money — but I tell you, it’s not

In Pede’s Robotics class, students are programming robots to independently navigate mazes and accomplish simple tasks — without employing remote control by humans. Markwica said that Pede’s Chromebook repair instruction helps the district save time and money, while teaching local students valuable know-how in diagnosing, analyzing and upgrading computers. Many of the repair parts are scavenged from computers that have been retired due to serious problems, he said. “The students are gaining skills we previously hadn’t been able to teach them,” Markwica said, noting that some of the teenagers spontaneously join Pede’s classes when they have a study hall or a free period. “It’s a collaborative, flexible situation which is a really nice addition to our school environment,” Markwica said. Pede grew up in Pennsylvania’s Pocono mountains, and subsequently taught Physics in New Jersey for five years, then moved to the Adirondacks. Last year, he served as a substitute teacher for several school districts before joining the Johnsburg Central faculty. Pede said he has spent a lot of time in the Johnsburg area since he was four years old. “I like fishing and hiking — all the outdoor stuff,” he said. “Also, it’s quiet and calm up here.” ■

moving forward, it’s off the county’s priority list — and we need to do something now,” he said. Dickinson said that the paid personnel of the Lake George Emergency Squad are holding down additional jobs to both supplement their income and obtain health care benefits, and that many of the agency’s volunteers have jobs which prevent them from being available. He noted that the town’s pay scale for EMS personnel was $5 or more per hour less than other similar employment opportunities elsewhere. Dickinson cited another factor discouraging people from taking on positions with the Lake George Emergency Squad. “The job stress is astronomical,” he said. After the town meeting, Crocitto phoned squad president Chris Hawley to confirm

those instances, Crocitto said, ambulances of the Warrensburg or North Queensbury EMS squads have been dispatched. Crocitto offered his thoughts on the future of the Lake George ambulance squad. “The qualifications for emergency medical personnel are higher, the training is more demanding, and it’s more challenging to recruit volunteers,” he said. “This has been a long time coming, but we have a lot of good people in the squad and we want to retain them.” These trends require changes to made, Crocitto continued. “We may need to create a town department so the EMS personnel are employees of the town and can have job benefits — as well as increasing the salaries.” ■

Recently, Harrington has also been overseeing planning for the construction of the village’s new $24 million sewer plant. Harrington said he plans to spend more time with his family, including his granddaughter. Keith Lanfear of Lake George, now the village’s assistant superintendent of public works, is taking over Harrington’s post. Hired in 2009 as foreman for the village highway department, Lanfear has since taken on more duties, year after year, Harrington said. Working in the construction industry most of his adult life, Lanfear owned and operated his own construction enterprise — primarily excavation and concrete work — prior to his employment with the village, he said. “Dave and I have always coordinated really well with all the projects the village has going on, so this is a natural transition,” he said of taking on the role of village superintendent of public works. “I’m looking forward to the challenges, and I intend to keep things up to the same calibre that Dave did.” ■

employment figures at the agency. Crocitto relayed information that presently, one medic and one emergency medical technician are scheduled to be on duty at all times — so there’s theoretically coverage 24 hours per day, seven days per week. However, none of them are full-time employees — a roster of 40 part-timers are now in the schedule’s rotation. Also, there are merely two or three volunteers that are sporadically available, Crocitto said, but not one of them is a driver. He added that the while the average time for a crew to board an ambulance and be headed towards an emergency scene is two minutes, there have been occasions when the Lake George Emergency Squad has been unable to respond due to lack of available staffi ng. From BALLOON FEST » pg. 1

Within minutes of coaxing his balloon upright three days earlier, Sullivan was standing in his balloon’s basket, awaiting takeoff. “I’ve been into ballooning for 19 years — since I was 14 years old when I went for my fi rst fl ight at the Adirondack Balloon Festival,” he said, noting he obtained his pilot’s license as a young teenager. “I’ve been participating every year since— It’s my family’s favorite annual event.” Sullivan said he was originally from Hudson Falls, but moved to Nashville Tenessee. He bought his own balloon at age 20, he said as he prepared to take flight. “My balloon doesn’t like to be on the ground, and we’ve got to take off now, he said, as his crew members released their tethers and he floated upward into clear skies. Lack of wind and good weather meant 90 balloons took off at the mass launches held over the next two days. The crowds were so large at the festival that many vendors ran out of food. Designated parking lots were full early in the weekend, and people left their cars beside roadways extending miles from the main launches on Saturday and Sunday at Warren County’s Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Queensbury. Also, traffic backups were more erious than in prior years. Among those savoring the gigantic balloons inflating and taking off in Thursday’s mass launch in Glens Falls’ Crandall Park were five or six children shepherded by Morgan Fisher of Queensbury.

Sullivan blasts a propane flame into his balloon to prompt it to life off the ground in Crandall Park — the first craft to take flight at the four-day 2019 Adirondack Balloon Festival. Sullivan began piloting balloons 19 years ago when he was licensed to do so — at age 14. Photo by Thom Randall

“We come every year— they are so excited,” Fisher said as her children touched an inflating balloon and a second later ran away yelling in joy. “To me, the Adirondack Balloon Festival means excitement and tradition,” Fisher said. “It’s a fall festival — in the Adirondacks — that’s really beautiful.” Nearby Melissa Seale, a Lake George School Board member, watched her five-year-old son Michael scamper around an inflating balloon. She said she and her husband moved to Glens Falls about three years ago and bought a house across the street from Crandall Park, without knowing the balloon festival existed for over four decades. “When I saw the balloons take off from the park that first year, I thought ‘This is pretty cool.’ Now, I love the balloons and I know were so lucky to be where we are,” she said. Seale added that she’s having a portico built Leah Grace LaJoy gazes at hot-air balloons drifting into the blue yonder while sitting on the shoulders of her father, Jonathan LaGoy of Glenville. Thousands of children were entranced with the spectacle at the four-day event last weekend, considered one of the only annual balloon festivals in the U.S. where people are allowed to get up close to balloons as they are inflated.

atop columns in front of her house, and it will provide an ideal bird’s-eye view of the balloon fest in years to come. “We’ll really enjoy the festival after it’s built, she said. Judy Villa-White gazed into the sky, watching one balloon after another drift into the blue, while the crowd cheered and applauded. “This festival is absolutely part of the history of Glens Falls and Queensbury — i love it,” she said, noting that her friend Dan Scott had traveled from Chicago to attend the festival. Sporting a broad grin, Scott said he grew up in the Glens Falls area, and his college friends used to gather at the festival to enjoy the spectacle. “My parents had a balloon party each year, and we’d celebrate — big-time,” he said. “It’s a great day, and an awesome weekend.” Erin Reid Coker, a co-organizer of the festival, confirmed that Thursday’s launch in Crandall Park set a new record for crowd size. The mass launch of 24 balloons within minutes, he added, was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Zonta Club, which has a local chapter which

Living United By Dan Alexander PUBLISHER

Our area United Way campaigns are now underway and need your active support. Over the years I’ve had the great fortune to be a part of the United Way Campaign. I’ve seen first hand what the United Way is all about and how valuable they are to those in our communities. Obviously, charitable giving means different things to different people. Who among us wouldn’t give when we know the exact circumstances of the need? Who wouldn’t part with a few bucks a week if it meant a Life Flight Helicopter would come to the rescue of their family member or even themselves? Sadly many never recognize the value of those few dollars given each week. How a couple of bucks can impact the lives of so many or when those same few dollars plus many more may come to their own aid. Just like the devastating damage from a storm, fire or accident we never know what’s around the corner for any of us and there is nothing any of us wouldn’t do when we clearly see the immediate need. Unfortunately, the need isn’t always right there on the surface clearly visible to all. It’s buried in the everyday hectic life we all seem to live these days but, for many of those who suffer at the hand of misfortune, they need a helping hand. That’s where the Partner Agencies of the United Way step forward every day, dealing with both large and visible events as well as those private, behind the scenes family issues that affect so many across our region. Many of these volunteer agencies would cease to exist without our voluntary contribution either through the United Way Campaign or outright donations by a generous public. Through the United Way Campaign, 100% of your contribution can be channeled directly to a specific agency or agencies of your choice. Only through the United Way Campaign will your employer allow you to have a payroll deduction taken each pay that adds up to a significant dollar amount by year’s end. Only through the United Way Campaign can you join with other generous givers from around our region to create a major giving source to support these hard-working non-profit agencies. This allows them to focus their energies on serving those in need and not on raising funds. On behalf of all the agencies and the many volunteers who generously donate their time, and most importantly all those served by these dedicated agencies, thank you for your consideration in supporting this most worthwhile community campaign. No amount is too small to make an impact. ■ — Dan Alexander is the publisher of the Sun Community News

Both chambers took an oath To the Editor: Um, of course the voters will decide in 2020. And maybe the Russians will have a say too, as decorated Marine and former FBI director Mueller documented and warned against. And maybe the Ukrainians can have a say too, if the president can blackmail them with congressionally approved aid in return for dirt on his political opponents. You are being disingenuous if you pretend not to understand the political lay of the land regarding impeachment. It takes two houses, and smart Democrats realize impeachment is a dead end in the Republican controlled Senate. Both chambers took an oath to the Constitution, not a man or party. But one party is refusing to exercise the same oversight that they did so fervently with Democratic presidents. Ask yourself how Republicans would have reacted if Obama had invited the Taliban (The Taliban!!!) to American soil to negotiate. On the week of 9/11???!!! I thought we didn’t negotiate with terrorists! But, Mr. Trump hasn’t met a dictator he doesn’t admire. The lovely Saudis-who supplied the majority of the terrorists who flew into our buildings, he kisses their rings, and his elected son in law takes loans from them! It’s a damn shame Senator McCain (who I voted for) is no longer with us. He accurately described Mr. Trump, and the particular danger he represents. It seems to me that the Republican Party that I knew and supported has ceased to exist. What remains may as well be re-named the Trump party. Ask yourself, if there were 20 “Republican” Senators with McCain’s character, how far along the impeachment inquiry would we be? Of course, the traitor would be gone, and happily we’d have a President Pence. Take a new picture for your by-line: one with blinders on. — Mark Bealor, Saranac Lake ■ This letter is in response to Dan Alexander’s column “Let the voters decide” that appeared in the Sept. 21 edition of The Sun.

Zoning in Warrensburg To the Editor: Is the Town of Warrensburg selling its soul? On Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. the town’s Planning Board will be reviewing a site plan for a Dollar General store on the former Senior Center Building property at 3847 Main Street. That property is zoned “Hamlet Mixed Use,” allowing for “pedestrian-oriented mix of residential, office and smaller scale commercial use, generally in converted homes or other structures compatible with adjacent neighborhoods.” A Dollar General store would require a variance in such a zone. Warrensburg is familiar with the term “variance.” Stewart’s Shops required a variance to build in the same zone. Krystal Chrysler’s display lot, adjacent to the post

office, also required a variance from the existing zoning, also Hamlet Mixed Use. On what grounds were those granted? Zoning took a long time to be established in Warrensburg. The current plan was ratified in 2012. Such zoning is intended to preserve the quality of life in certain areas, usually residential, but often to preserve the ambiance of historic business or professional areas as well. By violating the precepts of a particular zone for whatever reason, the intention of the zoning plan is lost. One variance opens the door to anyone following and therefore should be entered upon with serious thought and trepidation. In addition to its wonderful mix of young families and retirees, one of the Town’s best assets is its historic hometown appearance, with numerous homes and commercial buildings dating to the turn-of-the-20 th century. That these are being maintained by their owners should be recognized and applauded, perhaps even rewarded. Manipulating well-intended zoning for short-term monetary benefit will destroy the fabric of our town, and the benefits to both visitors and home-owners. I urge residents to attend that meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 7 p.m. — Steve Parisi, Warrensburg ■

Gun laws need to evolve To the Editor: Mr. Cooper expressed some practical points and obvious common sense ones also. Certainly competitive shooting is fun, but somehow an assault weapon’s only purpose is to obliviate anything in it’s path. It legitimizes “destruction of human life targets!” By definition, it’s sole purpose in a war environment is to kill many very quickly. I respect the right of gun ownership, but I do get irked when people cite the Second Amendment to justify their views. This amendment was ratified on Dec. 15, 1791.

Those responsible for the birth of this document were unable to foresee how America would evolve. Their legal and political philosophy centered upon the age they were living in. I summarized some ideas below.

1791:

1. Ownership of simple firearms with lesser options necessary for livelihood/protection. 2. To sustain a militia to protect new democracy from a tyrannical federal government. 3. 13 states, so less people. 4. No social media to verbalize views to the population to act upon. 5. Fewer social factors stymie the element leading to mass shootings.

2019:

1. Many firearms, multitude of choices for leisure and protection. 2. Some gun owners still cite fear of tyrannical government. 3. 50 states, more people. 4. Social media radicalizes some and encourages action. 5. Too many social factors contribute to mass shootings. Laws must change when things evolve to stay relevant and fulfill their purpose, to protect people. Here’s an analogy to ponder. The first speed limit sign was introduced in 1901. (12 mph) Thirty-three years later Chicago imposed a speed limit of 30 mph due to a rise in fatalities. Stop signs, traffic lights, etc. were introduced to meet the challenge of a new era. Laws came about to protect drivers, pedestrians and properties. Why haven’t gun laws changed for the same reasons? — Ken Sausa, Lake Placid ■ This letter is in response to Anton Cooper’s letter “Federal gun legislation needed” that ran in the Aug. 24 edition of The Sun.

One hundred years ago – September 1919 By Jean Hadden CORRESPONDENT

THE QUEEN’S LAST DAYS

I was not born in Warrensburgh but I have lived here for 62 years and a day has never gone by that I do not feel blessed. The town has always been called, in my time here, the “Queen village of the Adirondacks” and that is the way I have always felt about “her” and I am highly appreciative of the privilege of living here. I have recently had good reason to come to realize that I have always been, however, in the habit of consorting with dedicated people who felt about our town as I do and recently I have come to the truly awful realization that not everyone cares and appreciates the beauty and the unique history of the town and who are more than ready to transform it, in the name of petty financial gain, into just another nondescript, highly commercial bump in the road on the way to Canada.

MEMORY OF GOOD TIMES PAST

Former town supervisor, the late Charles Hastings was a good friend of mine and he loved his town just as I did. His total aim in life was to improve it and protect it from future harm. We used to talk often and I well remember just how happy he was on a memorable day in 1978 when he, glowing with pride, told me that he had been able to buy for the town, at a really good price, the prestigious Miles Thomas house at 3847 Main Street and he intended it to be a permanent gift from the town to the Warrensburgh Senior Citizens organization, who he knew would love it, care for it and guard it for future generations to come. I well remember the day I first walked into the front door of this beautiful house. It was like coming home and I could feel

the fabulous history of the Thomas family and their unique contribution to the prosperity of this town which was well known as the ”Gateway to the Adirondacks.” For many years in future times I worked to research and compile the story of the house, the Thomas family and their enormous contribution to the history of the Queen Village which they so well loved.

THE GHOSTS IN THE HALLWAY

Miles Thomas, born in 1825, in Bolton Landing, was the son of Simon and Betsey Baker Thomas and in his younger days he was a schoolteacher. Being an ambitious man he came to Warrensburgh in 1854 and became a successful merchant. On July 15, 1849 he had married Sarah Brown and they established a dynasty in this town. Miles served three terms in the early 1880’s as County Treasurer and like his father before him, he was a staunch “dyed in the wool” Republican, Miles and Sarah had two sons, Albert and Charles Thomas and an adopted daughter, Addie Thomas. To my complete surprise, I discovered that I was distantly related to Addie. In 1873 Miles did well in his growing business and he decided to build a fine home for his family. It is my good fortune to own the small notebook that he carried in his back pocket in which he made a precise record of every carpenter that he hired and every board and fixture that he purchased, with complete dates. In the future his son, Albert greatly enlarged the family home as it is today.

GONE FROM THEIR EARTHLY PAIN

Miles Thomas died August 14, 1886 at his home. His granddaughter’s husband, banker Louis Reoux, who resided there in later years, died of a stroke on the front porch smoking a cigar. His wife, Adelia did not allow smoking in her grandfather’s fine house. In the Warrensburgh News newspaper, at the turn of the century, it stated, “From its pain-racked tenement of clay,

death released the soul of Mrs. Sarah Thomas on Tuesday afternoon, June 6, 1911. The grim reaper, so universally dreaded, was welcomed by the weary sufferer who was well prepared and longed for the eternal rest which the Master she had faithfully served has promised his servants.” Albert H. Thomas lived his entire life in his father’s house and died there May 8, 1917 after he had suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he failed to recover. There are indeed many ghosts that walk the stately halls of Miles Thomas’ wonderful house.

TRASHING HISTORY FOR MONEY GAIN

Some people have no feeling at all for history which, as the poet put it, is “a bucket of ashes.” That is their right. But we must ask ourselves, do politicians have the right to deprive the current and future citizens of Warrensburg of their heritage, a wonderful house of beauty and history that was purchased to belong to the citizens of the town? Museum director Steve Parisi, a man who has spent his life tirelessly defending and promoting our wonderful Queen Village history, says “Warrensburg is selling its soul,” and I can’t agree with him more. Do you personally think that the Warrensburg Town Board has the God given right to twist the current zoning laws, manipulate well-intended zoning for short-term monetary benefit, which will, I feel, destroy the fabric of our town and possibly sell the Miles Thomas house to Dollar General Store where discount dry dog food and bug spray are sold? Is it possible that the Floyd Bennett bandstand might be the next victim? If you, as a resident or an interested party, have an opinion on this outrage, I hope that you will attend the public meeting on this subject at the Town Hall on Oct. 1, 2019 at 7 p.m. ■ — Readers are welcome to contact Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at Jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 623-2210.

Burgher field hockey team competing well despite player shortage By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

WARRENSBURG | With a roster one short of the number of players allowed on the field, the Warrensburg Varsity Field Hockey Team is making its mark this year, although each athlete is playing each game without a break. Their skilled, competitive play has allowed them to compete with far-larger schools. As of last week, their season record was 2-2 in the Adirondack-Wasaren League — a considerable feat, considering their personnel shortage. On Sept. 16, WCS field hockey team beat traditional powerhouse Salem-Cambridge by a score of 5-1. After Salem’s MaryKate McPhee scored the fi rst goal with 3:23 into the game, the Burghers fought back and scored the remainder of the goals for the day. Abigail Ranous jump-started Warrensburg’s offense by ending the fi rst half with a goal with 5:16 remaining. She then started the second half with a goal at 1:04, firing up the Warrensburg squad. Nayana DeAmelia scored about two minutes later on a Sara Langworthy assist.

Sydney Gerrain scored the final two goals of the game, assisted by Sara Langworthy and DeAmelia, with 14:57 and 11:46 remaining on the clock respectively. Coach Teresa Colvin credited her entire team for their aggressive play, adding that goalie Bella DeAmelia had a solid effort for the day with 13 saves. On Sept. 20, Warrensburg defeated Greenwich, another traditionally strong team, by a score of 4 to 1. Again, an initial goal was scored by a Greenwich player, but Abigail Ranous scored next with 9:40 remaining in the first half, assisted by Langworthy. Gerrain scored a goal about seven minutes later off an assist by Nayana DeAmelia. Ranous scored again with 45 seconds left in the half, off a feed by DeAmelia. In the second half, Ranous scored with about 11 minutes remaining off a Langworthy assist. Warrensburg had 15 penalty corners to Greenwich’s two. The Burghers’ offense is reflected in Greenwich’s goalie tallying 9 saves versus Bella DeAmelia’s 3. On Sept. 19, the Burghers lost 4-0 to Queensbury High, which has about seven

Warrensburg field hockey player Madison Binder battles with a Queensbury opponent Sept. 19 for ball control near the Burgher goal, while Olivia FrazierLee waits downfield for a pass. The Burghers are playing with expertise and determination this year, despite having only 10 players on their roster — one short of the number in standard competition. Photo by Thom Randall times the enrollment as Warrensburg. Bella DeAmelia had 12 saves over the game, compared to Queensbury’s six. Watching her players warm up against Queensbury, Colvin praised her players’ determination. “They all play hard and compete every minute of every game,” she said, turning her attention to the Cambridge-Salem game. “Against Salem, we came out strong and worked

Burghers add another shutout to season’s stellar start Shut out Corinth-Fort Edward, 52-0 By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

Wbg.’s huge Garage Sale to descend on Warrensburg next weekend

By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

WARRENSBURG | Due to mass marketing via Facebook, Instagram and other social media, Warrensburg’s colossal World’s Largest Garage Sale is expected to draw its largest crowd in recent history, local Chamber of Commerce executive director Suzanne Tyler predicted this week. “Once again, we welcome visitors from all over the nation for this sale, hoping they enjoy Warrensburg as we do all year long,” she said. “This gigantic sale has something for everybody — and if you can’t find what you are looking for, it just doesn’t exist!” During this huge community-wide sale, set for Saturday Oct. 5 and Sunday Oct. 6, Warrensburg will be awash in bargain-hunters — local folks joined by tens of thousands of people from central New York as well as from neighboring states. Both days, a mile-long crowd will be

picking through wares of 600-plus vendors and 1,000 or more private garage sales held by residents who clear out their attics and garages. Whether visitors are seeking collectibles, specialty or distressed goods, vehicle parts, antiques, old toys, vintage jewelry, household goods, socks, toboggans or tools — it’s all for sale at Warrensburg’s huge sale. Warrensburg’s big sale has a street-fair atmosphere, complete with plenty of carnival food: from blooming onions and fried bread, to ethnic food — and of course pizza, cotton candy and kettle-glazed popcorn served up by a Santa Claus character, no less. Tyler said that this weekend’s sale features a wealth of new vendors — so many that a new lot was opened just days ago to accommodate them, Tyler said. All sale sites will be pinpointed on an interactive map that can be accessed via smartphone as well as computers. This digital

HOW TO SURVIVE & ENJOY THE GREAT SALE: • Arrive early on Friday — check into town before 7:15 a.m. A lot of vendors are setting up Friday. • If you do arrive Saturday, take I-87 Northway to exits 22, 24 or 25. Avoid Exit 23, the primary road into Warrensburg, since it becomes very congested. By 8:30 or 9 a.m. Saturday, traffic can be backed up for miles. From Exit 22, turn left onto Rte. 9 and drive just a few miles north to Warrensburg. From Exit 24, go south on Schroon River Road and park at the Warren County Fairgrounds where shuttle buses will take you in and out of town. Or, from Exit 25, head south out of Chestertown on Rte. 9 into Warrensburg. If you

do arrive via Exit 23, take a right turn to go via East Schroon River Rd. and follow signs to complimentary parking at the Warren County Fairgrounds and take a free bus downtown. • From Friday Sept. 28 through Sunday Oct. 30, there is no parking on Main St. from the bandstand to Stewart Farrar Avenue, nor on Elm St., nor Emerson, Second, Hackensack, Horicon and Adirondack avenues. Parking is also prohibited on the north side of Stewart Farrar, and the north side of Library Ave. from Elm to James streets. These parking bans are so emergency vehicles can move through town. Those who disobey these dictates are likely to

map, which will direct people to parking, outhouses, and bus stops — and feature a vendor directory — will be active this week on a new website at warrensburggaragesale.com. The great sale is so popular that people jam the town on Friday, hoping to get “first pick” of all the treasures. Some savvy shoppers cruise the streets, armed with flashlights

have their vehicle towed. • Motorists are urged not to block driveways, fire hydrants, nor park on private property without permission. No trailers of any kind nor recreational vehicles may be parked along roadways. Many vehicles get towed each year. • In-town parking is available for both cars and recreational vehicles at the Warrensburg firehouse on lower Elm St. for a modest charge. Both days, the local firefighters will be serving breakfast at the firehouse and lunch at the Alexander Funeral Home on Main St.. Proceeds benefit the volunteer fire company. ■

before dawn on Saturday, as well. The Warrensburg Fire Company will again be holding their annual breakfast at their firehouse on Saturday as well as their traditional lunch fare on both Saturday and Sunday. People arriving in their recreational vehicles will find RV parking behind the fire hall on Elm St. convenient and reasonably priced, Tyler said. ■

When your family suffers a loss, we want to help you let your friends and neighbors know. Each week we will publish a list of Death Notices at no charge. These notices will include name, date of death & birth, age, town and the name of the funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Like most newspapers, we do need to charge a small fee of $65 for a 250-word obituary which will include a picture (if supplied) in the paper. Larger sizes are also available. If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.

Hoss’s to hold cancer benefit

center of Long Lake. “There will be about 20 to 25 vendors, many are friends of ours, selling handmade goods. The Long Lake Fire Company brings the fire truck out for kids to see. Along with several artists attending and bands playing through out the day,” said Hossley-Pierce. The event will also have several dining choices with an ice cream stand, burgers grilling at the park, and fresh baked goods from local vendors. Chainsaw carver Sarah Winters will also be carving her famed bears at the event and will donate one to be offered for sale at the silent auction table. “There will be a little bit of everything,” said Hossley-Pierce. Randy’s Patient Fund of the C.R. Woods Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital helps patients with gas cards, visit copays, telephone minutes, prescription co-pays, and family lodging costs while undergoing cancer treatments. The event asks for a $20 entrance fee and all proceeds from the event along with monies raised will go towards the support of Randy’s Patient Fund. For those that can’t make the event but would like to donate to help your local neighbor, Hossley-Pierce will also set up a Facebook fund so that those from a distance or unable to attend can still donate. Hoss’s Country Corners face book page posted, “We are asking you to join us, one way or the other! Donate, participate, or just show up! Vendors, donations, volunteers...it’s all about the money. Vendor fees go directly to Randy’s Patient Fund.” To learn more or if you would like to donate or volunteer in some capacity contact Jules at hossscountrycorner@gmail. com or 800-952-4677. ■

The Octo-Bear-Fest, a play on words as a regional Oktoberfest, will be held Saturday, October 5 from approximately 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. “We hope to make this the best one yet.The fifth year on the fifth of the month,” said Hossley-Pierce. Both, Hossley-Pierce and her mother, are breast cancer survivors and feel passionately about supporting others going through the same as they had. “Everyday there is a new and improved treatment and we just want to help those in need and going through this difficult time. We know, we’ve been there, too.” In recent years, the venue for Octo-bear-fest had been held elsewhere, but this year the event will be held on the green in the park across from Hoss’s Country Corner Store in the
