Horicon citizens grieve Turcotte death said the day after Turcotte’s death. Simpson said he’d heard that Turcotte had once plunged into frigid lakewater to help a man retrieve his snowmobile after it had fallen through the ice. “I’ve heard stories about how Joe did a lot of things to help people out — if you needed a hand, he was there — that’s the kind of guy he was.” Simpson said that Turcotte’s outreach to others was reflected in his service as a member of the Horicon town planning board. “Joe took his responsibilities seriously on the planning board,” Simpson said. “He was very thoughtful and sincere — he was just such a great guy, and he did a great job representing the community’s citizens.” Horicon Planning Board Chairman Bill McGhie expressed similar thoughts about Turcotte’s service to the town. “Joe didn’t talk much, but when he spoke,

HORICON | Joseph D. Turcotte — who died Sept. 26 when his pickup truck was slammed from behind by a vehicle whose driver authorities said was fleeing from police — was recalled by grieving Horicon officials as a communityminded, earnest and compassionate man who would reach out to others in need. Turcotte, 38, was a member of the Town of Horicon Planning Board as well as a partner and craftsman at Gar Wood Custom Boats — a Turcotte family enterprise of national renown. “Joe cared deeply for our community, and its citizens,” Horicon Supervisor Matt Simpson

you had to listen — he had such good ideas,” McGhie said. “It will be hard now to look at his empty chair at board meetings — he was such an asset to our town.” Simpson said he had greeted Turcotte at The Crossroads general store shortly before the crash occurred. “This is just so tragic — I’m blown away about this,” Simpson said, adding how Turcotte was “an exceptional craft sman” at building custom wooden boats. Police said that Turcotte, 38, died due to the collision on the northbound I-87 Exit 25 off-ramp. The driver of the vehicle that police said hit Turcotte’s pickup from behind — Skyler B. Crouse, 30, of Akwesasne Mohawk territory — was charged with second-degree manslaughter, first-degree reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing of a police officer and resisting arrest. By Thom Randall I think the community should take a hard look at this idea — It would provide great benefits.”

LAKE GEORGE | Momentum is now surging to establish a performing arts center in Lake George, but the nature of such a venue, its fi nancial viability and its cost has sparked public controversy. At the Sept. 16 Lake George Village Board meeting, the village board voted 4-1 to obtain an appraisal, at a cost of $2,750, of the Lake George Forum property and two other lots to the south, which host a former real estate office and the now-closed Village Motor Court motel. The cost of appraisal is to be split evenly with the town of Lake George. All three properties are owned by Ralph Macchio, and he is seeking to sell them together for $6 million, Lake George Mayor Blais said. The appraisal would be an initial step toward establishing a performing arts center/events center in the 50,000 squarefeet Forum building and using the other two lots for parking.

CHESTER | Responding to complaints about boat and personal watercraft operators on Loon Lake flaunting town regulations, the Chester town board is moving toward reinstituting the position of lake constable to patrol the waterway and enforce municipal laws. In 2018, the board abandoned the position of Loon Lake constable — empowered to issue citations for violations — replacing it with the post of lake safety officer, whose duties were merely to educate the public on safe and legal watercraft operation.

Lake George municipal leaders have taken an initial step in establishing a concert hall/ events center in the village, and the preferred venue is considered to be the Lake George Forum, which has only hosted several events in the past year. Although enthusiasm has blossomed recently for such a civic center, some people have questioned its financial viability as well as whether it is appropriate or possible for The Forum or any other building to adequately serve as both a performing arts center and a convention hall. “Adirondack Exposure 2020,” a calendar of near-naked residents of North Creek and nearby communities made its debut at a party held Sept. 29 at Basil & Wicks tavern in North Creek — and it is now available for purchase at various stores throughout the area. The full-color calendar — a wry parody of the racy mid-century pinup calendars — features people ranging from their mid-30s to their 80s in an array of scenes in the area, engaging in their work, hobbies or various pastimes, all minus clothing.

CALENDAR DEDICATED TO FREE-SPIRITED WOMAN The calendar campaign was orchestrated by Nancy Beaudin, Patty Conner and Katie Nightingale, who are featured without clothes on the cover of the publication, which is dedicated to the late Jane Castaneda of North River — a friend of the three women. The trio are seated in Adirondack chairs, holding photo cutouts of Jane’s face in strategic positions while toasting Castaneda near a memorial to the well-loved

woman with a free-wheeling approach to life who died in 2017 at the age of 92, Beaudin said. “Jane was a wonderful, amazing, spirited woman,” Beaudin said, noting that Castaneda was an adventurer and multicultural phenomenon.

CAMPAIGN A FUNDRAISER FOR CHARITY

The sale of the Adirondack Exposure 2020 calendars benefits the Elizabeth Nash Foundation, North Country Ministry and the North Country Hardship Fund. The Nash Foundation raises money supports cystic fibrosis

research and helps those who are enduring the syndrome; the North Country Ministry assists area rural residents in need; and the Hardship Fund helps out area families who have suffered calamities. Two other North Creek-based “naked calendars” have preceded this edition — one for 2013 and another for 2014 — and they became quite collectible. These two publications raised a total of $20,000 for the aforementioned three charities and several others in the area. Photographers for this year’s calendar were David Braley of David Braley Photography and Siobhan Levere of Mountain River Life Photography, as well as Katie Nightingale. The North Creek-based calendars follow the lead of 11 middleaged women of Yorkshire, England, who in 1999 posed behind strategically-placed kitchen implements and vegetables in a calendar they published to raise money for leukemia research. Their exploits were depicted in the 2003 British comedy film “Calendar Girls.” Ten area businesses — plus the North Creek Business Alliance and Our Town Theater Group — and 28 individuals donated toward the publication of Adirondack Exposure 2020. Kathleen Loreah proofread the calendar, and Cathy Miaorana worked on publicizing the campaign. Beaudin said she and her friends developed the calendar by dreaming up scenes that reflect the area’s culture, and then recruited people to be photographed “au naturale.” “We just come up with ideas, and approached people to be models — we say ‘naked’ a minute or so into the conversation, and they respond, ‘Did you say naked?’” she said with a chuckle. “It’s a fun, humorous process.” ■

Gathering, fully clothed, at the “reveal” party Sept. 29 for the Adirondack Exposure 2020 near-naked calendar are area citizens who posed for illustrations in this “cheesecake for charity” fundraiser. The models autographed calendars for the dozens of people who attended and enjoyed the music of the local band Finger Diddle. Among the models at the party are: (front and middle rows, left to right): Katie Nightingale, Jeff Smith, Karen Hanley, Carolyn Bischoff, Marlene & Jay Forbes, and Nancy Beaudin; (rear): Andy Jackson, Greg Leigh, Geoff Merrett, Franky Jebb and Tom Badgley.

WHERE TO OBTAIN THE CALENDARS:

The Adirondack Exposure 2020 calendars are available at these various area stores or venues: Hudson River Traders, Community Bank, Adirondack Spirits, Izzy’s, barVino, Foothills, Chrissy’s Cafe, Marsha’s Restaurant, Barking Spider, Basil & Wick’s, Revolution Rail, Poima, Beck’s Tavern and ARO Rafting — all in North Creek; Riverside Gallery, Nemec’s Farm & Garden and Oscar’s Smoke House in Warrensburg; Indian Lake Antiques and Pine’s Country Story in Indian Lake; Garnet Hill Lodge in North River; and at The Glen Lodge B&B on Rte. 28 north of Warrensburg. The Calendars can also be obtained, while supplies last, by sending a check made out to Nancy Beaudin for $15 plus $3 shipping an handling ($18 total) to: Nancy Beaudin, P.O. Box 198, North River, NY 12856. ■

Former town official arrested on new charges By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

WARRENSBURG | A former Warrensburg Town Council member and local business owner who was indicted several months ago on 21 counts related to alleged sexual abuse of three boys, was jailed Sept. 23 for violating orders of protection issued in May, authorities said. Dean G. Ackley, 60, was charged Sept. 23 with 10 misdemeanor counts of seconddegree criminal contempt following reports that he had been seen several times on the premises of area high school. In late May, Ackley was indicted by a Warren County grand jury on four felonies and 17 misdemeanors — charges of firstdegree criminal sexual act, first-degree and third-degree sexual abuse, endangering the welfare of a child, and unlawfully dealing with a child. The charges stemmed from alleged sex acts with a total of four boys as young as 14. Several of the boys claimed he provided them with alcohol as well as abusing them, according to authorities. The most weighty charge was prompted by allegations of forcible sexual assault of one teenager. Ackley has pleaded not guilty to the charges. On the day of his latest arrest, he was sent to Warren County jail without bail, with an arraignment on the contempt charges scheduled for Oct. 2 in Warrensburg Town Court.

From LOON LAKE » pg. 1

Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett said last week that citizens have complained that many watercraft are exceeding speed limits on Loon Lake, particularly the 5 miles per hour limit within 100 feet of the shoreline for boats. For personal watercrafts including JetSkis, this restriction extends to 200 feet of the shore. Citizens living near the lake have also complained, he added, about boats towing water skiers without a spotter onboard — which is a requirement of state law. “There apparently is a consensus that having a person on the lake with greater enforcement powers will prompt more people ‘tow the line,’” Leggett said, noting that he and other town officials are talking with Loon Lake Park District Association

representatives about having the lake officer undertake peace officer training. Certification as a peace officer or constable requires taking a 100-hour course. Leggett noted that he is also seeking to have increased patrolling on Loon Lake by the Warren County Sheriff’s marine officers. In other business conducted at the Chester Town Board’s September meeting the board approved authorizing town officials to apply for a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant to help pay for the engineering and construction costs of rehabilitating Loon Lake Dam, which has been classified as “High Hazard” — posing a risk of breaching — by state officials. The cost of the project is expected to cost up to $500,000. ■

He served as the town’s deputy supervisor for a few years in the early 2000s under a prior administration. ■

Letters Obituary sends strong message on smoking To the Editor: “If you’re a smoker — quit now.” These words ring out loud and clear in a powerful obituary written by Geoffrey Turner, a Latham man who passed away earlier this year. Instead of reflecting on his personal or career accomplishments, Turner used his obituary to send an unequivocal message about the dangers of smoking. “I did many good things, helped lots of people, and even made a decent living,” Mr. Turner wrote. “At 66 years old, I lived a decent life, but there are so many events and milestones I will not be able to share with my loved ones.” The North Country Healthy Heart Network appreciates Mr. Turner’s candidness — too often, the dangers of smoking are glossed over. Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control, the National Cancer Institute, and the Food and Drug Administration released findings from the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey. The results were alarming: for the first time in decades, the use of tobacco products by our youth has increased. The Heart Network is encouraged by New York State’s decision to increase the age for purchasing tobacco products to 21. Several other proposals under consideration could reverse trends in youth tobacco use, including ending the sale of tobacco and electronic cigarette products in pharmacies and implementing new display restrictions. These steps are important because we know that 90 percent of smokers started before turning 19 — if you don’t start by then, the chances of becoming addicted decrease dramatically. fail to look past the most recent headline, and the fact that 99% of gun owners are not criminals, and that criminals should be the ones held accountable, not inanimate objects who some act as though they are possessed, waiting to be picked up to transfer their evil to whichever poor soul finds them. — David LaPell, Pottersville ■

Knowing the history of assault weapons

Firearm type irrelevant to second amendment debate

To the Editor: There’s been a lot of talk that federal gun laws and their need to evolve. The truth is, they have. Prior to the National Firearms Act of 1934, you could buy a Thompson submachine gun without question along with sawed off shotguns, silencers, etc. Now, you can’t. Prior to 1968, you could order any gun you want through the mail, now, you must go to a licensed dealer and have a background check performed by the FBI. These changes in laws are never mentioned, the fact that gun laws are stricter now, then they were a hundred years ago. As far as the Founding Fathers not conceiving of anything more advanced than a musket, please Google the Puckle Gun, the first real attempt at a machine gun, patented in 1718 & tested in 1722 complete with detachable cylindrical magazines. Again, the media and the politicians don’t know, or don’t care about these facts, because they don’t fit their narratives, like the one that AR-15’s (which has been in production since 1964) are used for hunting, when there are hundreds if not thousands of articles & videos online to prove otherwise. The same with the so called AK-47 variant (a true AK-47 would be held under the National Firearms Act of 1934). But those who do not own guns or know about history,

To the Editor: In response to Ken Sausa’s letter published in your issue dated 9-28-19, please follow the Constitution. The Second Amendment does not apply to semi-auto rifles. nor does it apply to bolt action rifles, pistols or revolvers. The Second Amendment resricts government! The technology of the firearm is irrelevant. The restrictions on government remain the same, regardless of the firearm. The Second Amendment was not written to grant permission for citizens to own and bear firearms. It forbids government interference in the right to keep and bear arms, period! The right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. This also applies to the other rights! They are not granted, they stipulate inherent rights that the government may not prohibit. As we have witnessed corruption over the last ten years with in the Obama Administration and and the Deep State implants that still are not being held accountable it becomes obvious to millions that we need to hold on to our rights more than ever including to own and bear arms! — Bert Windle, Putnam Station ■

As a kid some 50 years ago, we didn’t have much in the way of organized sports back then. The vast majority of our games were just pick-up games, be it football, baseball, basketball, or kickball. But like in the game of golf, where the player calls his own foul based on the honor system, we knew the rules of the game. If you fouled someone, interfered with a catch, double dribbled, trapped the ball or was tagged on a closed play, we very seldom argued over a call that was usually announced by the offender. Despite being kids, we simply didn’t tolerate someone not playing by the rules of the game. It was generally their teammates who would overrule a habitual fouler who was never wrong when it was clear to all what happened. They were either forced to pout if they repeatedly were overruled or would not show up to play until they learned to play fairly. I think we would all be better served today if adults who know better could ever learn to play by the same set of rules we did as kids. Sadly, too many of us have played along with the bad kid to control the games we play today. The old saying of, “All’s fair in love and war,” and we can now add, “ And just about everything else.” So long as you can get away with it, and win, it seems nothing else matters. The rules, standards of conduct, our belief system, and the things we once put our faith in, all seem to be easily swayed now, so long as the ruling goes in our favor. Even in professional sports, we often see the offender put on a disingenuous acting performance when the foul or red flag is thrown. Just like the kid who wouldn’t play by the rules, even when instant replay shows the flagrancy of their off ense, they act as though the world has wronged them. Perhaps it’s our judicial system that at times convicts the wrong person or let’s the guilty get away with the crime due to a technicality or skilled attorney. Either way many in our society, but not all, have tipped the scales to a system that seems to encourage it’s alright so long as you get away with it. I fear we will live in a frustrating world until the value of fair play returns in every aspect of life. Until our leaders and the vast majority of our people are capable of policing our own actions, we will live in a world where anything goes, and the only value that counts is winning at all cost. ■

DHS has a plan

The town of Lake George voted Sept. 9 to pay their half of the appraisal fee, which Blais said was a small fraction of the prevailing cost of such an appraisal, because it was already accomplished for an unnamed individual who has expressed interest in acquiring The Forum. At public meetings held this month, most all the members of both boards expressed enthusiasm about establishing a concert hall/events center in Lake George.

To the Editor: Like most of you I am tired of the news. I just want to contemplate the lovely autumn leaves as they turn to an array of warm colors. Yet, it is important to read the newspaper and keep abreast of current events. You might be surprised and discover that our government is still protecting our democracy. On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security reported on its Strategic Framework for Countering Terrorism and Targeting Violence: White supremacist violent extremists have adopted an increasingly transnational outlook in recent years… Similar to how ISIS inspired and connected with potential radical Islamist terrorists, white supremacist violent extremists connect with like-minded individuals online... we must not only counter foreign enemies trying to strike us from abroad, but also those enemies, foreign and domestic, that seek to spur to violence our youth and our disaffected — encouraging them to strike in the heart of our Nation, and attack the unity of our vibrant, diverse American society… It is vital that the Department help its state and local partners counter the influence of terrorists and violent extremists in the online space. DHS has a plan. Let’s hope that they communicate with our local police who do the leg work to protect us in our communities. Let’s hope that those spurred to violence won’t have a gun! — Michelle Zelkowitz, Elizabethtown ■

PURPOSE OF CENTER PROMPTS DISSENT

However, with the availability of The Forum, the focus among municipal leaders has shifted from merely a concert hall to a multi-purpose venue that could host modest conventions, trade shows, and indoor festivals and events. At the town board’s September meeting, Lake George Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson said that if the Forum was redeveloped into a civic center, it could be used for modest-size conventions during weekdays, and for concerts and performing arts on weekends. He said that having such a venue would boost not only the area’s cultural offerings, but the economy, particularly during winter months when most conventions are held. Both Dickinson and board member Marisa Muratori predicted that a performing arts/civic center could be successful if it were professionally managed. Muratori said the town should look into grant funding to help fund the center. Town Board member Vinnie Crocitto said the

county should consider contributing to its acquisition and operation, considering the regional economic boost it would provide. “It’s a great building, and there’s a lot of interest in it,” Crocitto said, referring to a citizens committee of about 20 people seeking to launch a performing arts center locally. “I think the community should take a hard look at this idea — it would provide great benefits.” This community-based committee has identified The Forum as their top choice as a concert venue, Blais told the village trustees Sept. 16, although he added that the $6 million price seemed excessive. The concept of the venue serving various functions, however, has been questioned. The Lake George Mirror newsweekly has reported that the several members of the committee who have extensive experience in the performing arts have said that the design and function of a concert hall is substantially different than a convention center, and The Forum can’t serve adequately as both. Such differences include acoustics, tiered seating and other factors. In addition, area citizens have expressed opinions and submitted letters to the editor objecting to the cost of both the presumptive purchase price of The Forum and the expense of retrofitting the venue — as well as whether a concert hall/civic center would end up being financially viable in Lake George. The Forum building and its lot, bearing a municipal assessment of $2,378,900, was purchased in 2009 by Macchio for $1.81 million at a bank foreclosure auction after its former owners — a group of Lake George business owners — lost many millions of dollars on the enterprise, constructed years

earlier as an ice rink and an events center. Deputy Mayor John Earl questioned if committing to buy the property would hamper the village’s effort to obtain more grant money to build the $24 million sewer plant now under development, a commitment that is expected to boost local taxes substantially. Blais replied that either another entity could purchase the properties, and that such a purchase — by the village, the Lake George Convention & Visitors Bureau, or another community based enterprise — would likely only be accomplished three years or so from now. The mayor said that the two lots adjacent to The Forum could be developed into a 450space parking lot, which would not only provide plenty of parking spaces for the events and concert center, but also provide public parking for village visitors at an hourly rate. Blais predicted that revenue from the massive parking lot could fully pay the debt service for the purchase of the properties. He suggested that a shuttle service be operated from the lot into the core of the village. He said that The Forum was now “highly under-utilized,” as only a few events are held there each year, including the Elvis Festival and a gun show. Trustee John Root questioned whether the venue could attract enough events to pay for its expenses, considering that it has not yet been successful under several owners. Root voted against spending money on the appraisal, noting he had served on the committee that originally developed plans to establish The Forum — and since it has failed financially in the past, it wouldn’t likely be successful in the future. ■

WINTER TIME IS COMING UPON US

Probably, but by no means certainly, there will be a recurrence of the influenza epidemic this coming year. Indications are that should it occur, it will not be as serve as the pandemic of the previous winter. (Note – some things in life never change!) Sixteen Warrensburgh hunters were on Harrington Hill at the crack of dawn, on Sept. 24, 1919, after deer. No killing has of yet been reported. The Bear Waller hunt club was, bright and early, at Sawyer’s Clearing on election day.

The Rev. C.S. Agan could get it under control. Both Rev. Agan and Miss Smith were thrown from the car but fortunately neither was badly injured. The car remained upright thus preventing more serious consequences, but the machine was considerably damaged. Rev. Agan was able to conduct services in the Methodist

Barbara Stewart, wife of Stewart Farrar, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 30, 1919 at her home in Lewisville (a section of River Street), aged 26 years. She never fully recovered from an attack of the dreaded influenza which she suffered about a year ago. During her prolonged illness she was very patient and remained a cheerful spirit. Besides her husband she is survived by a little son, James Stewart Farrar, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Stewart, a sister Mary and a brother, Charles Stewart. Her brother Earl died about a year ago. Mrs. Farrar was a member of the Presbyterian Church and her funeral was held there Sept. 18, 1919, conducted by the Rev. S.R. Brown. Internment was in the Warrensburgh Cemetery. (Note – Stewart Farrar was the Queen Village’s long remembered and beloved eminent town historian. Later, after his wife’s premature death, he married her sister, Mary Stewart. I had the privilege of knowing them both. Barbara’s grave is in the prestigious section in the very back of the old side of the Warrensburg Cemetery. According to research done in 1918, ten persons in this country died from influenza or its aftereffects for each American who was killed in battle. Barbara Farrar was the grandmother of Sarah Farrar who

Kelso Creek Classic rides for 3rd year Vintage, modern XC dirtbike race in Minerva By Laura Achouatte STAFF WRITER

MINERVA | The Kelso Creek Classic took shape again in its third year running recently. Temperatures climbed to the 80s, which lent the weekend a formidable backdrop of clear skies and t-shirt weather, to accompany riders at this leg of a series of races noted by the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association of the Northeast. Kelso Creek Classic is race number 10 in a series of races all over the northeast that will culminate in Cortland this fall. The Saturday races started in the morning

with registration at 8 a.m. The first races of the day were in classes of vintage, pre-modern, and modern in an obstacle course and vintage cross-country. The afternoon consisted of CC/XC riders doing a trial run through an approximate 4 mile wooded terrain course and a cross-country race followed the trial. Sunday races involved a father/mother and son/daughter race and motocross races. Riders from as far away as Pennsylvania, Canada and Australia attended the two-day family event. Riders as young as 16 were able to enter the races. Paul Heid, a local resident, said, “It’s a semi-professional amateur race but there are a lot of real “big” guys that have done these races before and really we’re all here to just have some fun. Whoever wants to come out and ride can. We ride for points and the winner gets a trophy and bragging rights.

DEATH NOTICES

But, everyone gets to have fun.” The oldest rider attending the event was an 80-year-old that the riders affectionately called “The Old Man,” who came to the Minerva weekend races from Putnam Valley and rode in the post-vintage races. “I love to ride in the woods,” he said, “I’m 80 and I just enjoy riding motorcycles. I used to race these vintage bikes when they weren’t vintage.” The Kelso Creek Classic was held on Ken Mason Road on Brett Darrow’s private land and organized by Darrow, Ed Roman, and Merrit Brown.

“It took me a year to get the permit from the APA but it was worth it. Everyone comes out here and has some fun. We all love racing and get to have a great weekend doing it,” said Darrow, as he wrenched on his bike, covered in grease, with a big smile on his face and perspiration from the noon heat on his brow. “We’ve got all kinds of people here, even the town supervisor and half of the board. The event is getting bigger and better each year,” Darrow added. For more information on next year’s race go to the Facebook page Kelso Creek Classic or to ahrmanortheast.com. ■

called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to repeal a bail-reform measure, to take effect Jan. 1, that would allow defendants who are not accused of violent crimes to be set free until their trial. “Skyler Crouse, the man who led authorities on a high-speed chase that killed an innocent man, was charged with seconddegree Manslaughter among other offenses,” Stec said in a press release. “Under the new bail reform measures, Crouse would be set free without bail, despite his long criminal past and history of skipping out on bail.” Stec’s concern about upholding public safety was echoed by state Sen. Betty Little and various law enforcement authorities, according to various news reports Monday. People in northern Warren County, however, were focused on the loss of Turcotte, grieving his untimely death. His obituary, published Tuesday, stated that calling hours were to be held Wednesday. Townspeople predicted that hundreds would be paying their respects. Turcotte’s funeral was to be held the following day. Simpson said that area citizens were heartbroken over the loss of such a well-loved local man. “Joe was considered a big part of the future of the Town of Horicon,” Simpson said. “People looked at him in that way.” ■

Authorities said that shortly after 8 a.m. Sept. 26, state police had observed a Chevrolet pickup speeding at about 90 miles per hour through a construction zone on the Northway south of Exit 19, and patrol officers pursued the truck as it traveled north, at times exceeding 100 miles per hour. State police said that patrol officers placed a studded metal strip in the roadway south of Exit 25, and the device deflated one of the truck’s tires. Then the driver pulled off the highway onto the Exit 25 ramp at a high speed and crashed into Turcotte’s truck, overturning it at about 8:20 a.m. Police said Crouse then fled on foot, but they apprehended him soon after. Authorities said Crouse resisted arrest and was defiant. A televised news report showed him spitting on a WNYT videographer as he was led into court for arraignment, which prompted an additional charge of harassment. Authorities said Crouse was driving with a suspended license. According to news reports online, Crouse has a lengthy record of criminal arrests. The incident has prompted outcries for a change in state legislation. On Sept. 30, state Assemblyman Dan Stec Children’s Chapel 9am followed by Fellowship Coffee. Huge crowd expected for Warrensburg’s great Garage Sale this weekend By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

The AJ/NE Sun | October 5, 2019 • 7

Tens of thousands of bargain shoppers from all over the Northeast U.S. and beyond annually crowd Warrensburg’s sidewalks during the town’s World’s Largest Garage Sale, set this year for Saturday Oct. 5 and Sunday Oct. 6 — although savvy shoppers will be on the streets as early as Thursday or Friday. This year’s crowd is expected to be larger than in recent years due to the sale being publicized extensively through social media, and how inquiries have far surpassed previous years. Photo by Thom Randall

WARRENSBURG | With forecasts of fair weather, increased prior inquiries and dozens more vendors participating than in recent years, this weekend’s 40th annual Warrensburg’s World’s Largest Garage Sale is expected to attract one of its largest crowds ever. Set officially for Saturday Oct. 5 and Sunday Oct. 6, Warrensburg’s sidewalks and streets will be crammed with bargain hunters — many of them drawn from across the northeastern U.S. browsing through an incredible array of goods. Chamber of Commerce executive director Suzanne Tyler said that the Chamber’s designated sale spaces sold out in record time, and a lot of new vendors will be offering

some unusual merchandise and a wide variety of street food will be available. “We’ve received more phone calls, social media messages and e-mails inquiring about the sale than ever before,” she said. “All our lodging and campgrounds were sold out weeks ago, and we’re now referring inquiries to accommodations in Chestertown.” More than 600 commercial vendors and 1,000 or more garage sales will be held in Warrensburg, she predicted. The latter will be offering not only household goods, but tools, vehicle parts, antiques, toys, vintage jewelry, appliances and crafts — all at bargain prices.

A new website at warrensburggaragesale.com now pinpoints vendors on an interactive map that can be accessed via smartphone as well as computers. This digital map directs people to parking, outhouses, and bus stops as well as community amenities. The Warrensburg Fire Company will again be holding their annual breakfast at their firehouse on Saturday as well as their traditional lunch fare on both Saturday and Sunday. People arriving in their recreational vehicles will find RV parking behind the fire hall on Elm St. convenient and reasonably priced, Tyler said. “We’re thankful to the town, its businesses and citizens for supporting this event for all these years,” she said. ■

WHITEHALL | The Warrensburg-North Warren football team’s fast, dodging running backs, their beefy powerful line and aggressive defenders collaborated Sept. 27 to overpower their most substantial challenger of the season — previously unbeaten Whitehall. The game, held on the Railroaders’ home field, ended up with the Burghers prevailing, 30-13. Leading Friday’s efficient offensive attack — besides the veteran left-handed quarterback Mac Baker — were running backs Jesse Griffin, a hard-charging senior and Dylan Winchell, a sophomore known for his wily, dodging sprints downfield. Griffin tallied 161 yards rushing plus 63 yards receiving, while Winchell gained 173 yards on the ground and 30 yards via the air. Winchell scored three touchdowns and Griffin scored one. Coach Mike Perrone offered his thoughts about their role in surpassing the Railroaders. “Jesse and Dylan were both amazing and electric,” Perrone said. “Winchell had a couple of big plays to spring open the game and turn the tide, and Jesse — our workhorse runner — had some great runs later in the game as well as a touchdown reception early that was huge in giving us momentum.” Turnovers were also a key factor in the game — seniors Jaron and Jesse Griffin and Jacob Clear all recovered one fumble each, while junior Zach Carpenter snagged an interception. This was achieved on a fourth-down play in which he wasn’t fooled by what appeared to be a screen pass but was a deep throw instead, Perrone said. “Zach got a big-time interception — and it was his first time playing safety,” Perrone said, noting Carpenter had formerly been positioned as linebacker. Sunday, Carpenter deferred credit to his teammates for the Burghers’ 4-0 season start. “We will do anything to come out on top, and that ‘swhat makes us different from other teams,” he said. Although Warrensburg’s quarterback and running backs routinely dominate the headlines, the offensive line and defense deserves as much credit. Several North Warren athletes had perhaps their best games of their career — Junior Tanner Dunkley, a 280 pound defender, tallied five tackles and five assists; while sophomore Andrew Beadnell accomplished four tackles and six assists. “They were a big part of why we won,” Perrone said. Burgher senior Jacob Clear, a 270-pounder, had some key blocks that made a key difference in the game, Perrone said. “Clear really delivered —blocking some of Whitehall’s big guys, particularly in the second half,” he said, adding that Jaron Griffin contained Brendan Covey, one of Whitehall’s most powerful players. On defense, Jaron Griffin accomplished five tackles and eight assists; Zach Shambo tallied four tackles and six assists; and freshman Travis Hitchcock achieved four tackles and eight assists. Winchell, Baker and Jesse Griffin were effective on both sides of the ball. Perrone said he was happy that his team rebounded from a first-quarter 7-6 deficit and a 14-13 half, closing out the game with a 16-0 fourth-quarter tirade. Two days before the game, the Burghers were ranked the No. 9 football team in the state for all small schools, a step up from No. 10 from the previous week. The new rankings, expected to be released on Oct. 2, will likely move the Burghers higher. This Saturday Oct. 5 beginning at 1 p.m., the Burghers face their most formidable competition yet — Stillwater, a Class C school

very tough,” Perrone said of the team that’s ranked No. 4 in the state. “We have our work cut out for us.” ■

In a pre-season practice, Warrensburg quarterback Mac Baker hands off the ball to a running back as linemen advance to clear a path for him. Warrensburg’s offensive line as well as their defenders played vital roles Sept. 28 in their 30-13 win over previously unbeaten Whitehall. Photo by Thom Randall
