EARLY VOTING DETAILS RELEASED

By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

QUEENSBURY | This November, residents of New York state will have new options on when they can vote. Early voting in the Nov. 5 general election is to be held in Warren County each day from Saturday, Oct. 26, through Sunday, Nov. 3, at the county Board of Elections office, located on the third floor of the county Human Services building at 1340 state Route 9. The county election commissioners released details about early voting procedures this week. All registered voters can vote early, and the process is virtually identical to the process citizens are used to. However, check-in for voters is now conducted on computer tablets with the help of an election inspector utilizing a digital

database rather than looking up names in poll books. The county Board of Elections is holding early voting sessions on the above two Saturdays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, and on Sundays, Oct. 27 and Nov. 3. The sessions will also be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29; Thursday, Oct. 31; and Friday, Nov. 1. On Monday, Oct. 28, and Wednesday, Oct. 30, the county’s early voting sessions are to be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Early voting results will be reported soon after 9 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 5. The early voting opportunity does not change the option of voting by an absentee ballot — available to those registered voters whose circumstances meet the qualifications specified on the Warren County Board of Elections website. For additional information, contact the Warren County Board of Elections or the New York State Board of Elections at 518-474-1953. ■

WARRENSBURG | Each year, hundreds of area citizens gather to bid on gift baskets as a way to contribute to a time-honored charity that brightens the holiday season for dozens of local families. This year, Florence LaPoint’s 18th-annual “Gift Baskets Galore” silent-auction fundraiser is to be held Saturday, Oct. 19, in a new venue — the Warrensburg Elementary School gym — because the local high school “Cafetorium” is under extensive renovation. The gift baskets, more than 140 this year, are filled with items and services donated by area merchants. Viewing of the baskets and placing bids on them starts at 12:30 p.m. and concludes at 2 p.m. when the drawings for the winners begin. Single admission is $10, which provides 25 chances in the drawings. Additional tickets are available for $5. Children age 5 and older are

required to purchase an admission ticket. Tickets may be purchased in advance from Willows Bistro on Main Street in Warrensburg, or at Starla’s Shoppe, formerly Sutton’s café, on state Route 9 in Queensbury. Advance ticket purchase is recommended; however, tickets will be available at the door. The event raises money for the local Operation Santa Claus, an effort that’s been helping people for 34 years. The charity is spearheaded in the Warrensburg area by former local school teacher Florence LaPoint, who for generations ran a dance studio in town. “We deeply appreciate the generosity of all the businesses and individuals who have donated,” she said, praised the dozens of volunteers who help her each as she year. Warrensburg’s Operation Santa Claus provides clothes and food for families in the Warrensburg School District who are facing urgent needs. For more information about this event or Operation Santa Claus, call LaPoint at 623-3531. ■

Denton Publications President Dan Alexander talks to members of Chestertown Rotary Club Oct. 8 about how the newspaper industry has been evolving over the past several decades — and what changes the future may hold for printed media. He also detailed the history of Denton Publications, which publishes The Sun Community News and a variety of other newspapers and magazines stretching from Syracuse to Vermont. Additionally, Alexander described the strong influence that local newspapers have in boosting economic vitality, particularly in rural communities. Photo by Thom Randall

Lead Poisoning Prevention Week October 20-26, 2019

Lead poisoning is caused by swallowing or breathing lead. Children under 6 years old are most at risk. If you are pregnant, lead can harm your baby.

LAKE GEORGE | Three candidates for two Lake George town board seats will be presenting their views to the public at a “Meet the Candidates Night” set for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in the town hall off Old Post Road. This nonpartisan event is to be moderated by representatives of The Sun Community News, which is sponsoring the event. Incumbent town board members Marisa Muratori and Dan Hurley as well as challenger Sean Quirk are scheduled to present their thoughts on issues facing the town. Beginning at 6:45 p.m., citizens can obtain sanctioned cards from the event moderators, on which they can write questions to be posed to candidates. In similar events held in Warren County, such questions are subject to editing, or being merged with other similar inquiries. Beginning at 6:45 p.m., citizens can obtain sanctioned 3”x 5” cards from the event moderator, on which they

can write questions, one per card, to be directed to the Town Board candidates, who will each have 90 seconds to answer. The questions will be gathered from the audience at 7 p.m. and then will be reviewed, modified if appropriate, and collated. The use of sanctioned cards only is to provide a more diverse set of questions from a greater number of citizens, rather than a few people dominating the discussions. Submitted questions that read as political statements or allegations against an individual candidate will be rephrased by the moderator toward issue-based questions, to allow for appropriate discussion of the underlying topic. Each of the Town Board candidates will have the opportunity to make a two-minute opening statement on their qualifications, experience and goals in office. If a candidate is mentioned by another candidate in their response to a question or their initial presentation, the candidate mentioned is allowed a one-minute response. Candidates will also have an opportunity to present a 90-second closing statement. ■

Seniors in the audience, ranging in age from ranging from 45 to 85 years old, contributed a wealth of ideas in the hour-long session. These ideas included group trips to performing arts venues in the Capital Region and New York City as well as casinos, museums and historical sites and other destinations across the northeastern U.S. Covered-dish dinners, lessons in arts and crafts —and instruction in operating computers, cellphones and tablets — were also suggested. Gatherings that include grandchildren and caretakers for the elderly were also proposed, as were walking, hiking and snowshoeing excursions. Citizens noted that many seniors are isolated, and outreach is needed to get them involved in programs to enrich their

lives and combat loneliness. Muench suggested that volunteers could be recruited to provide transportation to senior center meetings and events. Gross said that such outreach might extend to those who are middle-aged, helping them to prepare for their senior years. Another idea proposed was for seniors who are retired from various careers to pass on their knowledge and experience to youth interested in various fields — medicine, law, teaching, public policy and employment in scientific enterprises and human services. Book discussions, photography outings and lessons, and programs featuring travel experiences were also suggested. Muench said there would likely be no lower limit for people to participate in the proposed organization’s programs, and that people from all over northern Warren County

might be welcome to participate. Davis — who knits and crochets and is experienced in fiber arts — asked who was interested in instruction in such crafts, and a half-dozen of the seniors raised their hands. Yoga, core training and other types of exercise sessions — including classes for seniors with limited mobility — were also suggested. The steering committee members noted they had been discussing senior center concepts with Judith McKinnon, a Lake George resident who is moving soon to Brant Lake and was present for the meeting. McKinnon has professional experience in senior services, including programming for organizations dedicated to meeting their needs. Among her suggestions were to involve North Warren Central School officials in developing inter-generational programs and activities — and to reach out to the

The proceeds from the barn party are believed to be a record sum. On Sunday, Roy Ross praised the generosity of people who participated. “Sincere thanks go to the local businesses and everyone else who donated to make this such a successful event,” he said. People from all over the region attended, many of them

bringing a dish to share. People enjoyed the mountain music performed by legendary singer-guitarist Mike Leddick and family, accompanied by Jim Davis, Roy said. Deejay Jay Siletti of Thurman also provided music during the event. Square dancing, frivolity and convivial socializing was enjoyed by all, Ross said, with the party beginning midafternoon and lasting until midnight. “People had a really great time while raising money for a worthy cause,” he said. The Ross’s first Barn Party was held in honor of Jamiee’s mother, Betty Thayer — who died of cancer in the mid-2000s. She had left behind money that was used to build the sturdy two-story barn. In the ensuing years, Roy and Jamiee have held barn parties for various families dealing with cancer or other serious hardships, and over more than 10 years, these events have raised more than $130,000. Ross noted that Trapasso is facing his syndrome with courage. “Since Tony contracted Lou Gehrig’s disease about two years ago, he has hiked up Hackensack Mountain well over 200 times,” he said, noting that Trapasso has lost vital motor functions, including speech. “We had half of Warrensburg here, including many, many members of the Warrensburg Fire Co.,” he said. Ross added that many members of the Trapasso family helped organize the event. “Tony is very well liked by people in the area,” he said. Trapasso not only operated a deli and general store in Warrensburg — he also worked as a roofer. Ross added that the citizens of Thurman, Warrensburg and other area towns are renowned for helping others in need. “Jamiee and I are so thankful that we live in a community of such supportive people,” he said. ■

McKinnon said that while launching a senior center seems like a substantial project, keeping one operating decade after decade is also a real challenge. “It takes a lot of energy and focus to keep a senior center going,” she said, noting that officers of such a group need to continually prepare future leaders to take over leadership roles. “A lot of people have to be invested in the vision and programming.” Muench said the turnout was a very positive sign that progress toward initial goals would be achieved. “I’m so impressed with this wonderful turnout,” she said, noting that a lot of viable ideas were proposed —concepts that would not only enrich the lives of local citizens, but attract new residents to Chester. ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

Can’t we all try to get along?

suncommunitynews.com/opinions

By Dan Alexander PUBLISHER

Among the many national stories last week, one event went completely against the grain of current culture, causing quite stir to the nation’s psyche. At last week’s Dallas Cowboys versus Green Bay Packers NFL game, the camera panned through the VIP area catching on live TV, former President George W. Bush and wife Laura laughing, eating, and enjoying the game with Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi. In our current political culture, I can only assume the nation would have felt much better had the two couples been screaming and throwing their food and drink at each other. But such was not the case. DeGeneres and de Rossi were invited to the game by Charlotte Jones, daughter of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, and DeGeneres was aware that she would be surrounded by people from very different views and strong beliefs, given the fact that she is big Packer’s fan. People were outraged that a gay, Hollywood liberal would be caught sitting next to a conservative Republican president at such a conspicuous event. On Monday, DeGeneres addressed the critics and well-wishers on her show, simply stating, “Here’s the thing: I’m friends with George Bush. In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have, “ DeGeneres said. “ We’re all different, and I think that we’ve forgotten that that’s okay that we’re all different… but just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them,” she added. People seem to forget what good friends the Bushes are with the Clintons. Politics, like sports, shouldn’t be taken so seriously. The competitive nature of both can be extreme, but like sports, the political competition should be left on the field of play. In closing, I was reminded at church this week with the closing hymn below how we should be treating each other and if we did a little more of this, the nation would be far better served than attacking those who think differently than yourself … “Let there be peace on earth, And let it begin with me Let there be peace on earth, The peace that was meant to be With God as our Father, we are family Let me walk with each other, In perfect harmony Let peace begin with me, Let this be the moment now With every step, I take, Let this be my solemn vow To take each moment, And live each moment In peace eternally, Let there be peace on earth, And let it begin, with me.” ■

was made tangible by sharing his personal artifacts that students were able to touch and hold. To witness the conversation between Mr. Munk and the young students was truly a gift. After Mr. Munk’s presentation, we regrouped and the students spoke about a new appreciation of life and drive to always move forward no matter what. Dr. Jonathan Slater helped to remind my students that there are fewer and fewer survivors left. Our young people have a duty and responsibility now: tell their children about Mr. Munk, and keep the world from forgetting the Holocaust. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these students. Munk’s story inspired these young people to action. They participated in a peace vigil around SUNY Plattsburgh’s Hawkins pond. These experiences would not have happened without Canepa’s articles and The Sun. This story impacted the lives of my students

To the Editor: I am writing to thank Vladimir Monk, reporter Julie Canepa, and The Sun for helping me provide an incredible educational experience for my students. This summer, The Sun published articles about Mr. Munk, his life and experience at Auschwitz. I was not familiar with Mr. Munk’s story and his local connections and I was deeply touched. I wanted to provide an opportunity for my Summer Upward Bound students to hear his story. I reached out to Julie and she made this reality happen. Not only was she receptive, she even helped transport Vladimir to Beaumont Hall at SUNY Plattsburgh, where he said he taught Microbiology as a professor. Mr. Munk had a tremendous impact on my students. Students had the opportunity to hear the first-hand reflections of a Holocaust survivor. His experience

New book confirms it: Politics is a weird business JAY | New York Times bestselling author Tim Rowland’s newest book confirms what many have suspected: politics is a weird business. Rowland points out in his newest book, “Politics WeirdO-Pedia: The Ultimate Book of Surprising, Strange, and Incredibly Bizarre Facts about Politics,” that today’s political culture is no more unhinged than it has been at any point in world history. In fact, he says, we may comfort ourselves knowing that at points in the past, politics has been much more bizarre than it is now. “Today, for example, at least we are no longer cementing thousands of live humans into our public works projects.

That we know of,” he says. “Politics Weird-O-Pedia” is chock full of strange, funny and sometimes unnerving episodes in political history. At least, as we view today’s politicians, we can take comfort in knowing that they come by it honestly, according to Rowland. “There’s something about public office that, throughout time, has transcended normalcy. ‘Politics Weird-o-Pedia’ presents some of the oddest and most interesting political absurdities and tidbits from around the world, from Peter the Great’s tax on beards to a lawmaker’s mistress whom he kept on the congressional payroll despite her admission that ‘I can’t type,

I can’t file, I can’t even answer the phone,’” Rowland says. Rowland, a reporter for Sun Community News & Printing, has authored a number of books, including histories of the Adirondacks and Western Maryland mountains, and the “Strange and Obscure” series, collections of historical essays focusing on lesser-known aspects of American history. STEAMBOAT LANDING GETS NEW OWNERS

Historic boathouse goes from outfitter store to family-oriented lodging business By Laura Achouatte STAFF WRITER

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE | Temperate earlyfall weather and plentiful sunshine set a comfortable tone to the day for the new Steamboat Landing’s launch and ribbon cutting ceremony recently. In conjunction with the business’s launch, the annual Rustic Weekend was also taking place. While those that ventured down Route 28N to set their eyes on items such as handcrafted furniture to ornately carved screen

THE OWNERS: VANDERMOLLENS

The VanderMollens: Jeff, Sarah and their son, Ethan (the actual owner of the business; Jeff and Sarah are managers), are originally from New Jersey. Their love for Blue Mountain originated from Sarah’s stays at the The Hedges, a wellknown resort established in Blue Mountain Lake, starting at her childhood from around 1973. The family was, first, part-time residents. Jeff is a veteran volunteer fi reman with 31 years under his belt in New Jersey and has been on the Blue Mountain Lake Volunteer Fire Department for around 13 years now. BIRTHPLACE OF THE TUSCARORA

The building is a historic landmark. It housed the Tuscarora, a 75-foot steamboat dubbed “the Queen of the Adirondacks.” Hence, the building became Steamboat Landing. The Tuscarora was built and launched in 1900, bringing passengers and freight to the area lodges. At that time, the

mode of travel was by train, carriage and boat to the Adirondack area, and Blue Mountain was a treasured destination as it is today. Eventually, roads and automobiles changed the need for steamboats, and the Tuscarora was retired. “For my wife, my son and me, this is a labor of love. We really want to harbor an atmosphere here that brings togetherness. A place that can host, entertain and house our guests. We decided that this was our chance now to do this and bring that feeling we feel, when we come here, to others,” Jeff VanderMollen confided. Ethan really “runs the show more than us” said Mr. VanderMollen. The youngest VanderMollen is a member of the local Chamber

When nature calls Big crowds flock to ADK trails this fall By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER

KEENE | The stress caused by intense interest in the High Peaks this fall has turned forest rangers into meter maids, hikers into vandals, elected officials into parking-lot attendants and state parking policies into not-so-funny jokes. All of the above were apparent at a meeting of the Keene Town Board last week, as officials were bracing for the last big hiker crush of the year over the Columbus Day weekend. Keene had just weathered a resplendent fall Saturday that based on both anecdotal and analytical evidence was perhaps one of the three busiest in High Peaks history. “We were just scrambling to keep the roads open,” said Keene Supervisor Joe Pete Wilson. “We don’t have the tools for a town this size to manage (the crowds). We’re in over our heads and we’re going to need help.” On the Columbus Day weekend itself, parking lots were jammed before daybreak, as beautiful fall weather attracted crowds. The Department of Environmental Conservation has tried to limit what conservationists agree is overuse of mountain trails by restricting roadside parking between Keene Valley and the Giant Mountain trailhead, a plan that has largely backfired. Keene Supervisor Joe Pete Wilson said hikers have ripped out no-parking signs or

ignored them altogether. On social media, rangers reported that people leaving their cars in a restricted zone would slide sheets of paper under their windshield wipers to make it appear as if they had already received a ticket. Still others who were not permitted to park on the side of the road parked in private driveways instead. And some simply made the calculated decision that a ticket was simply the cost of parking, as if they were leaving their cars in a city garage. Wilson said that even when he told hikers that he would have to tow their cars, they said “No you won’t,” and walked away. So crowded was The Garden trailhead that a shuttle bringing in hikers who had parked at Marcy Field couldn’t get through for a time. And as of last Tuesday, the town had not even been able to find a driver for the Columbus Day weekend, Wilson said. Board member Teresa Cheetham-Palen said band aid approaches such as parking restrictions are bound to fail without “an overarching, comprehensive plan” for use of the park. “We want to be a friendly community, but the DEC has put us in a position where we can’t be,” she said. “They told people where they can’t park, but they didn’t give us any new parking.” Because of a pending lawsuit over tree cutting in the park, Wilson said the DEC is not adding any new parking areas in the Forest Preserve. (The group bringing the suit has said small-scale cutting, as for parking lots, is allowable under the law.) Cheetham-Palen and fellow board member Bob Biesemeyer agreed to join Wilson at the trailheads over the holiday weekend to help manage the throngs of hikers. The one tool

that seems to be effective in terms of crown management is human contact. Biesemeyer said it’s an opportunity to redirect hikers to less-crowded areas without being seen as a community of scolds. “We want to be a friendly community, and we have to be careful not to be too heavy on policing,” he said. “Putting a person out there who looks official makes such a difference,” said Willie

Janeway, executive director of the Adirondack Council, an organization that has documented the increasing crowds. “They can tell (hikers) there are other places they can go where they won’t have to walk two miles on the road.” The other area of agreement is in the need for immediate planning for next year. “The time is now to figure out what to be doing on Victoria Day weekend in May,” said Janeway, referring to a Canadian holiday. ■

Turning back the pages

American hero remembered By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST

Over the years, while writing about Warrensburg people, the good, the bad, the crazy and the departed, the person I grew to know best of all was Floyd Bennett, our celebrated town hero. If I am ever lucky enough to get into Heaven, his will be the first face that I recognize in the crowd at the golden gate, standing right next to Saint Peter. I really thought that I had read everything that was known about the man but recently I obtained a new book which relates additional and unusual facts about Floyd. It is entitled, “A Stowaway Ukulele Revealed” by Larry Bartrum and Dick Boak and tells about the Byrd polar expeditions.

BORN ON TRUESDALE HILL

Just 129 years ago, Floyd Bennett came into this world on October 25, 1890, the son of Hannah “Henrietta” Patrick and Wallace Bennett. He was born at the home of his grandparents, John W. and Alzina Marie Baker Patrick. His father, Wallace was related to the Bennett, Merritt and Langworthy families in Warrensburgh. He spent his teenage years living at the home of his aunt and uncle, James Warren Stanton and Mary Elizabeth Bennett Stanton. They lived at 6 Fourth Avenue in Warrensburgh. Floyd grew up to be a handsome man, slender and 5 feet, eight inches tall. He seemed to be interested in nothing but motors and automobile engines when he became a teenager.

Floyd was always known as being not much of a talker and his conversations usually consisted of discussing the weather. How did this average man, born in a small town, become an American historical legend you might ask yourself. Floyd left his farm home at age 17 to work in a lumber camp to earn money for a course in mechanics which he completed in six easy months. He later went to work for the People’s Garage in Ticonderoga. On Feb. 9, 1917 he married Cora Orkins in Virginia.

ON THE FLIGHT TO STARDOM

Floyd Bennett enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 15, 1917 in Burlington, Vermont and was placed in the new Naval Aviation Wing. This sent him, a poor Warrensburgh boy, on his way to stardom. In 1925 Floyd accompanied his friend, Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd to Greenland where he acted as his mechanic and pilot. On May 29, 1926 they flew over the North Pole in a three-motored plane known as the Josephine Ford. Floyd remained at the controls for fifteen and a half hours while Byrd navigated the ship. On that day they became a shining part of American history.

TOOK ALONG A UKULELE

How could this story possibly involve a musical instrument you might ask! This special C.F. Martin & Co. ukulele was owned by a Brooklyn sailor, a colorful gentleman by the name of Richard Koner. A great lover of history, Koner obtained the signatures of 150 well known people, including the Queen of Romania which were inscribed on this little music piece.

Konter shipped out in 1926 as a member of the crew of the Byrd Arctic Expedition and managed to smuggle his ukulele aboard Byrd’s plane for this first ever polar flight. When Byrd and Bennett returned back after making history, the high flying ukulele was returned to Koner by Floyd Bennett. Today it is in the Martin Factory in Pennsylvania where musical instruments are repaired. I think that it deserves to be in the Smithsonian as its flight is a true part of American history.

GOODBYE FLOYD BENNETT

I never walk into the Walgreen’s Pharmacy, here in Warrensburg, that I don’t think of Floyd and the gala party he was given there many years ago, when the Adirondack Hotel was located at that location, after he had returned in triumph from the North Pole. The last days of Floyd Bennett are well known. Always a hero, he became sick and bedridden, but before he was fully recovered, he left his hospital bed in a Detroit hospital to rush to the aid of German-Irish fliers that were stranded after they were forced to land on lonely Greenly Island in the North Atlantic near Labrador. He was accompanied by flyer Brent Balch and landing on Lake St. Agnes, he became too ill to continue and was sent to a Quebec City hospital in another plane. He died on April 25, 1926 there of double pneumonia. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors. He was our Warrensburgh hero. ■ — Readers are welcome to contact Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518-623-2210.

In 2013, Lake George Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson (foreground, center) presented the municipality’s first annual Lake George Community Stewardship Award to Denny Galloway (at right). Participating in the presentation were town board members: (rear, left to right): Vinnie Crocitto, Fran Heinrich and Marisa Muratori. Galloway will soon be receiving another prominent honor: the Lake George Rotary Club is presenting him with their Lifetime Achievement Award at a banquet set for Oct. 23 at the Lake George Holiday Inn — and the public is invited to attend. CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | Dennis “Denny” Galloway, a citizen of Lake George who for six decades has committed countless hours to community service, is to be honored by the Lake George Rotary Club at a banquet set for Oct. 23 at the Lake George Holiday Inn. A member and officer of Lake George Rotary for more than 60 years, Galloway is to receive the club’s Lifetime Achievement Award. His many contributions to Lake George and surrounding communities include spearheading the construction of the new Lake George Veterans Memorial at the intersection of Route 9 and Luzerne Road near I-87 Northway Exit 21. It was christened in June 2018 after almost two years of his planning and fundraising. As a Rotarian, he also spearheaded the development of the Lake George Welcome Corner, with its arrangement of lighted flagpoles, signs and stone-terraced gardens, located near the aforementioned intersection. Also, he organized and led a Rotary Club effort to build a heavy-duty bridge for an

elderly woman marooned by Tropical Storm Irene, which in August 2011 turned English Brook into a raging river, washing away a bridge that bore her driveway. Galloway personally paid for a portion of the project. Area officials and civic leaders have praised Galloway for dedicating so many days of his lengthy life to accomplishing projects for the community and helping other citizens in need. Galloway is a U.S. Army veteran who fought in World War II in the Philippines, serving as a tank gunner. Settling in Lake George after the war, he launched an electrical contracting business locally, which he operated for decades. Galloway’s civic involvement includes his 30 years in the Lake George Fire Department, as well as 12 years of service on the Lake George Town Board. In 2013, the town board honored him with their first-ever Community Award, primarily for his charitable works. Tickets to the Oct. 23 Rotary banquet are $25 per person. For information, see Helen Tobias at the Glens Falls National Bank’s Lake George branch. ■

In defensive clash, Burgers eke out victory over Chatham By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

WARRENSBURG | In an epic gridiron battle Oct. 11 that determined the area’s 2019 Class D football title, the Warrensburg-North Warren squad prevailed over Chatham, 8-7. The outcome wasn’t decided until the last play, when Chatham threw a pass in a fourth-down, 20+ yards-to-go situation, and Burgher defensive back Tristen Hitchcock intercepted the throw — then senior Burgher quarterback Mac Baker took a knee on the next play to end the game. This final drive of the game by Chatham was incredibly stressful for the Burghers, Baker recalled Sunday. “The last four minutes of the game felt like an hour,” he said. “Our defense dug down and stopped them. We just did what we had to do to win.” Each team had multiple drives, and all but two were stymied by the opposing squad. The game was a battle between tough defenses — the contest was scoreless until late in the third quarter when Chatham scored on an eight-yard pass. But on their next possession, Warrensburg-North Warren responded with a 60-yard drive — 45 of those yards achieved by running back Jesse Griffin — that ended in a touchdown and a conversion run that gave the Burghers their one-point advantage. Griffin, a senior, carried the ball into the end zone both times. Both Baker and Burgher coach Mike Perrone credited their defense in the battle between Warrensburg-North Warren — ranked No. 12 in the state in Class D prior to the game — versus Chatham, ranked No. 8. “It was a long, hard battle,” said Baker, who played both sides of the ball. “Our guys said it was the longest four minutes of their lives,” Perrone said. The Burghers accomplished six sacks, critical in countering Chatham’s potent offense, Perrone said. Altogether,

Burgher running back Jesse Griffin powers through the Chatham defense to gain a few yards during the sole scoring drive that achieved Warrensburg-North Warren’s 8-7 victory over Chatham on Oct. 11. Photo by Danielle Parker the Burghers contained Chatham to 55 yards on 27 carries. “Our game plan was to stop their run,” Perrone said. “Our players worked their butts off all week in preparation for the game, and we were confident in our defense,” Perrone said. “I don’t think we’ve ever before executed a defensive plan to that level.”

Among the defensive leaders was senior Zach Shambo who executed six solo tackles and five assists, Perrone said. “Zach was unbelievable defensively — he was fast and all over the place,” he said. Not far behind was classmate Jaron Griffin with two solos and six assists. Also leading in the defensive statistics were Jesse Griffin, juniors Zach Carpenter and Tanner Dunkley plus freshman Tristen Hitchcock, as well as Baker and seniors Jacob Clear and Joe Murdick, junior Anthony Girard, sophomores Andrew Beadnell and Dylan Winchell. Junior Jordan Mallory and sophomore Caiden Mosher also aided in the defense. “It was a total team effort,” Perrone said, noting that his players executed one crucial defensive stop right before halftime after Chatham had conducted several big plays that brought them down to the Burghers’ three-yard line on a fourth down. “Zach Shambo along with Jesse and Jaron Griffin stopped Chatham’s quarterback two yards from the end zone,” Perrone said. “It was huge.” Perrone added that as many as 1,000 fans witnessed this critical game — local students, school administrators, football parents and area citizens. “Thanks go to the community for such a great senior night, under the lights, supporting us in the biggest game of the year,” he said. Next up for the Burghers is a non-conference away game at 7 p.m. Friday Oct. 18 against Coxsackie-Athens, Perrone said. “They are a young team, but are well-coached — and we need to be focused and ready for them,” he said. ■ For further information 518-696-5468. LG girls head into postseason undefeated in league soccer play By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | For decades, girls soccer teams at Lake George have maintained a winning tradition — and as the fall sports season approached a conclusion this week, the 2019 varsity girls soccer squad is following that enviable tradition. As of Oct. 14, the Warriors are undefeated in the Adirondack League with their 10-0 win-loss record, and they are 10-3 overall — the three losses were to substantially larger schools. Their 2019 league wins are as follows: a 10-0 shutout of Corinth on Sept. 10, followed three days later with a 2-1 defeat of Bolton-Warrensburg on Sept. 13; a 10-0 blanking of Hadley-Luzerne on Sept. 17; a 7-0 shutout of Whitehall on Sept. 19; a 12-3 win over Salem on Sept. 24; and a 5-1 victory over Fort Ann on Oct. 1. These were followed by a 10-0 shutout of Corinth on Oct. 3, a 5-1 win over Bolton-Warrensburg Oct. 8, a 7-0 blanking of Hadley-Luzerne on Oct. 10, and an 11-0 shutout of Granville on Oct. 11. In a recent interview, Coach Stephen Kohls described the strengths of his team, which was rated No. 15 of all Class C schools in the state as of Oct. 8, prior to two of their latest wins. The team was ranked as high as No. 10 earlier in the year.

“Our passing and communication on the field is really good,” he said. “A lot of our athletes have played in big games before and including sectional games — so big games not a big deal for the girls. If they are down a goal, or circumstances are going against us, they keep calm and continue to work hard.” Kohls noted that one highlight of the season was that senior Ava Pushor was new at the position of full-time goaltender, but she was accomplishing her duties with expertise. “Ava has done really well — she’s accomplished some ‘highlight-reel’ saves in close games, whether it’s tipping the ball over the bar or rushing out and stopping a breakaway,” he said. “It’s a revelation to me.” As of Oct. 14, two midweek Adirondack League semifinal games were scheduled to determine the finalists. On Tuesday, Lake George will be competing with Salem, and on Wednesday, Bolton-Warrensburg was set for a game against Fort Ann. The winners are to vie for the Adirondack League Championship at 4 p.m. Friday Oct. 18 on the SUNY Adirondack soccer field. Kohls said he was optimistic about his team’s post-season prospects. “We’ve got maybe the most experienced team we’ve had in a long time,” he said. “Also, we have 7 or 8 girls who can score — We’re really hard to defend.” ■

Lake George junior forward Stephanie Dickinson-Frevola (right) battles with Bolton-Warrensburg sophomore midfielder Skyler Scott for ball possession, as her teammate senior midfielder Hope Boland (rear) observes the action. As of Oct. 14, Bolton Warrensburg could possibly meet up with Lake George again in the Adirondack League Championship game — if both teams defeat their semifinal foes in midweek showdowns.

Ethan Knauf answered an early goal by Fort Ann with two goals of his own within the next 20 minutes to win the game 2-1. As of Oct. 14, Lake George remained unbeaten for 2019, with a record of 14-0 overall and 12-0 in the Adirondack League after defeating Argyle 7-0 on Oct 12. Other recent Lake George games include a 10-0 defeat of Bolton-Warrrensburg on Oct. 11, a 6-0 Oct 9 win over Hadley-Luzerne, a 7-2 victory over North Warren on Oct. 4 and a 10-0 shutout of Corinth on Sept. 30. On Friday Oct. 18, the Warriors are to compete with Fort Ann for the Adirondack League Championship. The game is to be held at Queensbury High School’s boys soccer field.

FACTS ABOUT BREAST CANCER IN THE UNITED STATES

Breast cancer SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

B

reast cancer is a formidable foe. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 627,000 women lost their lives to breast cancer in 2018. But women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer, as the WHO notes early detection is critical and could potentially save thousands of lives each year.

been described as being similar to the texture of an orange peel. Lumps in the breast also may indicate breast cancer, though not all lumps are cancerous. • Change in appearance of the breast or nipple: Unexplained changes in the size or shape of the breast; dimpling anywhere on the breast; unexplained swelling or shrinking of the breast, particularly when the shrinking or swelling is exclusive to one side only; and a nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted are some signs and symptoms of breast cancer that can affect the appearance of the breast or nipple. It is common for women’s breasts to be asymmetrical, but sudden asymmetry should be brought to the attention of a physician.

A proactive approach is a key component of protecting oneself against breast cancer. While the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® notes that many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional cancer screening, women can keep an eye out for certain signs of breast cancer they might be able to detect on their own. Monthly self-exams can help women more easily identify changes in their breasts. During such self-exams, women can look for the following signs and symptoms and are advised to report any abnormalities they discover to their physicians immediately. • Changes in how the breast or nipple feels: The NBCF says nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm could indicate the presence of breast cancer. Some women may notice changes in the skin texture or an enlargement of the pores in the skin of their breast. In many instances, skin texture has

• Discharge from the nipple: The NBCF notes that any discharge from the nipple, but particularly a clear or bloody discharge, could be a sign of breast cancer. The NBCF also advises women that a milky discharge when they are not breastfeeding is not linked to breast cancer but should be discussed with a physician. Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can increase the likelihood of early diagnosis, which greatly improves women’s chances of surviving this disease. ■

Though women may notice various signs and symptoms that could be indicative of breast cancer, breast pain is generally not one of them. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® notes that there are various harmless causes of breast pain, such as puberty, menstruation and child birth, but that breast pain is not commonly a symptom of cancer. However, in rare instances breast pain may correlate with cancer. For example, breast tumors may cause pain, but cancerous tumors are not generally reported as painful. Though it may not be linked to breast cancer, breast pain should still be reported to a physician immediately, advises the NBCF.
