BOLTON LANDING | The third time may be a charm for the Bolton Central School community — or at least that’s what school administrators are hoping.

For the third time in 20 months, Bolton School District residents will be voting on a school expansion and renovation project.

CHESTERTOWN | The Chester-Horicon Health Center has for years been sinking into the ground and attempts have begun to raise it back to its original level.

The building’s foundation has been submerging for several years, primarily the northwest wings of the building which include the lobby and entrance. The corner of the lobby nearest state Route 9 has sunk the most, a total of 7 inches, Chester Supervisor said last Friday.

The Town of Chester owns the building and maintains it on behalf of the health center’s parent enterprise, Hudson Headwaters Health Network. The building was constructed in 2004 and opened the following year.

While contractors work on raising and stabilizing the building’s foundation, the health center is to be closed through Oct. 28.

A home at 100 Mud St. in Thurman was destroyed by fire last week. Authorities ruled the cause accidental.

He built that house in 2005 with his own hands.”

Baker said that Barnaby’s chemotherapy medications to treat his cancer — and all of his other possessions — were destroyed, putting a heavy strain on Barnaby’s finances.

The Thurman Volunteer Fire Co. was notified of the fire at 5:10 p.m. They responded to 100 Mud St. within minutes, but the house was fully involved when the fire company members arrived at the scene. The Thurman volunteers were assisted by firefighters Warrensburg, Johnsburg, Stony Creek and Garnet Lake.

A crew from Warrensburg Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene, but the house was unoccupied. Barnaby was at his daughter’s soccer game at the time of the blaze, Baker said.

Authorities said the blaze originated in the living room on the first floor of the home.

Fire investigators determined that the fire was accidental.

The campaign raised $880 of its $1,000 goal by Monday, the day this story went to print.

Baker said he was appreciative of the support.

The moral support from people is as important as the money raised, he said.

“I’m not asking for much,” he wrote. “Anything counts, as long as you have our family in your prayers we will get through this.” ■

The total price of the new proposed $3.87 million project is expected to have zero impact on school district taxes.

A public information meeting on the capital project is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15 in the school library. The vote is set for noon to 8 p.m. Oct. 30 in the school lobby.

The cost of the other two projects were $9.07 million in the March 2017 vote — defeated by a vote of 273-740 — and 8.77 million in the Oct. 2017 vote — rejected 392-281.

This new scaled-back project calls for moving and expanding the school’s technology instruction areas, bringing band and chorus instruction areas together, upgrading acoustics and lighting in the school’s “gymatorium” plus accomplishing a variety of required repairs, maintenance and improvements.

The new proposal also calls for building a new, expanded school entryway with additional security features.

This expansion to the north includes enlarging several classrooms now used for providing speech and occupational therapy, converting the space into a new technology instruction area.

This new 1,760-square feet technology center will provide space for small engine repair instruction, and allow students to gain experience on a computer-controlled laser cutting machine. Also, rooms will be dedicated for both 3-D printing and computer-aided design equipment and instruction.

Bolton Superintendent of Schools Michael Graney said this week that the technology area now has inadequate space and poor ventilation.

Also, the project expands and reorganizes the music instruction areas — locating both music and band classrooms on the ground floor — to better meet the needs of the students and provide better sound insulation from academic areas.

The capital project also includes replacing deteriorating sections of the school’s roof, upgrading the elevator to meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements, replacing the electrical panel and improving ventilation, and boosting stormwater controls.

Also, the plan calls for paving the bus garage area, conducting repairs to the bus garage, providing an enclosure for storage of maintenance equipment, and improving drainage at the gym entrance.

The cost of the new music center will be substantially paid for through an endowment of $618,000 from the estate of Frederick and Erika Uhl of Rockland County who spent summers in Bolton. Erika Uhl reportedly was a fan of the performing arts.

The total project’s cost is to be further reduced with $1.25 million of fund balance and $526,500 now saved for capital improvements, leaving an amount of $1,447,500 to be bonded. This sum would replace and existing bond payment that is expiring soon, resulting in no impact on local school taxes increase, Graney said.

“The school board and its facilities committee has moved forward on how best to meet the needs of the school district without increasing the tax levy — and we’ve been able to accomplish that objective,” he said.

“It is our aim to provide best education for our district’s students in the most cost-efficient manner.”

The building’s concrete foundation remains solid, and it is to be lifted, so a more solid base is set underneath, Town of Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett said.

“The building’s original contractor did not place the building on solid ground,” he said, noting that town insurance will not cover the expense to remedy the problem.

Adirondack Basement Systems, of Halfmoon, has already started the construction work.

For more than a week, their workers have been driving metal piers into the soil every several feet along the foundation, and they will be used to provide support for hydraulic jacks to lift the entire north and western portions of the building to make the building level. The steel piers are also expected to provide permanent support for the structure.

Leggett said people first recognized problems after the sidewalk started shifting in 2012 and reconstruction of the sidewalk didn’t help the problem. The sinking continued the next year, and town officials thought the building might stabilize sitting a few inches lower.

However, the problem became serious recently, Leggett said, when the lobby windows became trapezoidal, and the panes were considered likely to crack.

lobby corner and put solid material under the footers revealed a serious problem along two entire wings of the building, and that extensive repairs were necessary.

“When it was discovered that the building had dropped 7 inches, we just couldn’t ignore the problem,” Leggett said. “There was no sign of it stopping.”

The cost of the repair project is estimated at $70,000, a portion of which has already been expended.

About $10,000 of that sum will be shifted from an appropriation for town sidewalk replacement, and some anticipated maintenance on the Chester Municipal Center will be postponed to free up more money to go toward the health center repairs. The remainder is likely to come from town fund balance, Leggett said.

Both health centers — along with 15 other health centers in northern New York — are operated by Hudson Headwaters Health Network, an outgrowth of the original Chester Health Center, which years ago was located in a converted two-story home on Main Street.

Hudson Headwaters media specialist Maggie Evatt said that measures have been taken so the construction work would cause minimal disruption for patients.

“We will have staff from the Chester Health Center stationed in the Warrensburg Health Center, and we will route phone calls there — so patients with concerns will be able to talk to a familiar person,” she said. “Our focus is to make sure patients are taken care of.” ■

Woman arrested for DWAI with kids in tow

QUEENSBURY | A Queensbury woman was arrested by Warren County Sheriffs last week for allegedly driving while ability impaired (DWAI) by drugs with children in the vehicle.

Tara Reid, 35, was arrested on Oct. 12 after sheriff’s deputies responded to a driving complaint involving a blue 2002 Toyota Sienna on Main Street in the Town of Queensbury. The

vehicle was also involved with a hit and run property damage accident earlier in the day.

Officers located the vehicle on Main Street when it entered the Cumberland Farms parking lot and officers spoke to Reid.

Reid was given field sobriety tests and as a result of the investigation, was arrested for two counts of DWAI-drugs, both felonies because there were two young children in the vehicle. She was also charged with aggravated unlicensed operation and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Reid was arraigned by Glens Falls City Judge Hobbs and is scheduled to return to Queensbury Town Court at a later date. ■

'A house divided'

Over the next few weeks while I’m on vacation, I plan to use some old columns that I hope provide

Below is a partial from July 2011.

The problem as I see it, is not who pays more or fewer taxes, nor who’s right, the Democrats or the Republicans. If we let the two parties work this out, they’ll never solve the debt problem nor any major issues facing the country.

Ninety percent of Americans who vote will fall behind one party line or another, and it’s as clear as the day is long how you view these issues. The divide between the sides is getting deeper and far more entrenched.

In reality, it’s the 10 percent of independent Americans who voted in the last election who will swing the majority one way or the other.

The problem is, we need fewer liberals and conservatives in elected office and more non-partisan Americans who are willing to begin to address the issues and start solving some of the problems before either party runs this country into the ground with their constant ideological battles.

I think most of us are getting tired of the two parties beating the other side into the ground when they are both responsible for the mess we find ourselves in today.

Back in 1858 when the country was split over the issue of slavery, President Lincoln said, "a house divided against itself cannot stand," but was it really about slavery or was it about economics and finances?

His point back then was that one side or the other would eventually win out. Within a few years, the country was plunged into the Civil War which nearly destroyed the Union.

The rhetoric and anger has been growing over the past several decades with the sides growing farther apart.

The parties are seriously divided on nearly every issue, and while we’re a long way from a civil war, the time to solve these issues is now.

With the 2012 presidential campaigns starting to heat up, I wonder if Lieberman and McCain had it right in 2008 when McCain considered Lieberman as his vice president running mate?

If we can’t get an independent in the highest office, perhaps we need one from each party who can agree to work together and lead their party to the table to reach a true compromise.

We all know that won’t happen, but something needs to change, or I fear we are in for more of the same as we zigzag from one election to another while the divide grows and once again threatens the Union. ■

Civic engagement still needed as merger proposal enters final stretch Westport Central (WCS) and Elizabethtown-Lewis Central (ELCS) voters decided last week to move forward in the merger process between the two districts.

The straw poll vote passed by wide margins in each district, portending a strong public appetite for the proposed merger.

We commend everyone who voted and has participated in the years-long discussion, including the panelists and stakeholders who participated in Th e Sun’s forum last month.

But we hope civic engagement won’t drop off over the next six weeks ahead of the final vote.

Despite the wide margins in favor of the proposal — 85 percent at ELCS; 64 percent at WCS — a merger is far from a done deal, and voters must again head to the polls for the binding referendum on Dec. 4.

Political parties should reconcile differences

To the Editor: It is very real. There are, roughly speaking, two sides to a major portion of the issues today, and each side sees the other side as being seriously deluded.

The sides can be labeled liberal/ progressive versus conservative, but truly that does not seem to be an accurate labeling of either side really.

It would not seem so odd if on any particular issue, the composition of the opposing groups varied from issue to issue. But to have the same groups coherently disagree in total on so much seems weird.

Particularly, because each side sees the other side as deluded. Or at least that’s the way it appears to me.

It is easy enough to attribute the differences according to who watches Fox News and who watches MSNBC, but then it would just be by chance which news you watched, and it clearly is not by chance.

It is very hard to discuss things when it appears to each of us that the other side is speaking nonsense. Maybe the words “deluded” and “nonsense” are not quite accurate or too strong, but at the risk of oversimplifying, they seem fairly apt to me.

Of course, it seems perverse to me that the others don’t see their own delusion if I point it out to them and ridiculous that they could see my thinking as deluded. I mean that seriously,

In some ways, the discussion leading to that vote will be more granular and cerebral than its predecessor, probing into what enhanced academic offerings would look like in a shared district; details underpinning infrastructure projects, and the makeup and mechanics underpinning a newly constituted school board.

Many considerations, of course, are intangible — including the threads constituting the identity, traditions and rich legacies at each school, both of which are the centers of their communities.

It should be noted that one district wouldn’t be absorbed into another in the wake of a merger: This is not an annexation, and officials from both districts have repeatedly underscored a merger would result in entirely new

If veterans have turned to their federal elected representatives for help, they also know how disconnected our federal representatives are with their veteran constituents.

What she has told me is to file an appeal on the VA decisions about my health care.

Any veteran who has filed an appeal with the VA knows it can take up to 17 years to win an appeal. I will most likely be dead in 17 years, and that was how Stefanik addressed my VA health care needs.

I am asking my brother veterans and the residents in New York’s 21st Congressional District to register and vote for someone other than Stefanik on Nov. 6 because we veterans need a person in Congress who will represent us without waver.

The other two candidates are Tedra Cobb (D) and Lynn S. Kahn (G).

Both have assured me that they will help their constituent veterans when elected, but please if you want to thank a veteran for his service, do it by not voting for Stefanik.

Social Security checks to grow 2.8% Gillibrand wants to change how COLA increase is calculated

ELIZABETHTOWN | The Social Security Administration announced last week that cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) to beneficiaries will be 2.8 percent next year.

The adjustment marks the biggest increase since 2012.

The average Social Security benefit in 2018 is $1,422, CNBC reported, and the COLA will result in an extra $39 per month, or $468 annually.

COLA increases affect 1 in 5 Americans nationwide.

AARP said the increase brings “needed income security to those Social Security beneficiaries and their families who depend on their earned, modest benefits.”

“The COLA is particularly important for the tens of millions of families who depend on Social Security for all or most of their retirement income, many of whom may have lost ground during the Great Recession,” said Chief Executive Officer Jo Ann Jenkins in a statement. “Unfortunately, the cost of living increase may not adequately cover their expenses that rise faster than inflation including health, prescription drug, utility and housing costs.”

‘INADEQUATE’

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, a member of the Senate Aging Committee, called the increase “inadequate.”

“At a time when Congress is rewarding their corporate donors with tax breaks for investments overseas, they continue to shortchange our seniors,” Gillibrand said in a statement. “This cost of living adjustment is not enough in the face of rising costs for seniors who contributed their earnings into Social Security their whole working lives.”

COLA is based on a broad index of consumer prices, which measures price changes for “food, housing, clothing, transportation, energy, medical care, recreation and education,” according to the Associated Press.

Advocates for reform want to change the index to more accurately reflect the costs shouldered by beneficiaries.

Gillibrand, a co-sponsor of the Social Security Expansion Act, called for Congress to immediately reconsider the legislation she said would change COLA increases to reflect what seniors “actually spend their money on, including skyrocketing health care costs and prescription drugs.”

“By using a Consumer Price Index for elderly consumers, every year seniors would be able to receive increased benefits,” Gillibrand said. “The Social Security Expansion Act would also ensure that all Americans pay their fair share, and it would increase minimum benefits and extend the Social Security trust fund for more than six decades.”

Character shouldn’t be ignored at the polls

To the Editor: When we are finally alone in the voting booth, what comes to mind just before we make our marks?

I think that almost all of us still think about “personality” and “character” in the candidates.

Yes, some of us do worry about trade tariffs and health care, immigration and the right to bear arms, but ultimately, we want to elect representatives who care enough to help out as many Americans as possible.

And yet, I sense that all of us citizens are now trapped in a crazy feedback loop where we await further spectacles of Democrats and Republicans bashing each other — which provokes reactions from the electorate, which in turn, causes further bouts of two-party mixed-martial-arts.

So then we’re left with the party that fought better — and that better entertained us.

When you vote, vote with heart and mind.

We pick candidates whose personalities strike home. Now what about the elusive “character?” Yes, we say that all politicians lie: this is part of their definition.

We might do better to choose the candidates who lie to us less.

Both sides should move to the middle — but who goes first?

In “Thoughts From Behind The Pressline” (Oct. 13 edition), Kavanaugh was never fit for this position.

Church organizations, the American Bar Association and other respected organizations and individuals recognize that Kavanaugh didn’t have the temperament or lifelong morals for this job.

The Senate Judicial Committee hearing and the FBI investigation that was stifled by Trump from the beginning were a sham.

There were better-suited Republicans, but Republicans wanted a drama, and they got it at the expense of Dr Ford.

Kavanaugh was no middle of the road appointment.

Yes, both sides need to move toward the middle.

I admire your effort to talk about the middle, but your dig about what Democrats might do or not do was uncalled for.

Democrats have always fought for the little guy. Do all politicians line their pockets, maybe, but only one party fights for me.

Health care must be addressed

To the Editor: Despite being one of the most developed countries in the world, we still lack a health care system which provides affordable health care for all. Under President Obama, a health care plan was passed by Congress which was not perfect but did much to increase access to more affordable health care for all.

Sadly in the past two years, Congress has sought not to improve but to dismantle this health care program.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro) voted repeatedly to do just that. Though the vote for total repeal failed, parts of the health plan have been altered making it difficult for many to obtain affordable care.

Medical care in our country and the cost of prescription drugs are more expensive than in any other industrialized country.

I have friends who are paying unbelievably high prices for the drugs and care they need to live a healthy life. We need to be able to purchase drugs at a more affordable price.

We also need to maintain hospitals in our rural area.

Without these hospitals, people would have to travel long distances to obtain the care they urgently need.

We who live in New York’s 21st Congressional District need someone to represent us who understands that need for affordable care, lower drug prices and a strong network of rural medical centers.

Initially, you properly point out the misleading and outright false claims of Stefanik’s campaign, including the

During the quiet summer season, the Cobb campaign was reloading.

Yes, she answered the ridiculous Stefanik attack ads with calm press releases, refusing to be drawn into reciprocal attacks.

Stefanik’s record says all it needs about her support of the North Country.

You report that the Cobb campaign had less funds than her opponent to start the general and that her fundraising is “anemic,” but it’s mystifying that you ignore the important 3Q Federal Election Commission fundraising deadline that just occurred prior to your editorial!

This filing demonstrates the support the campaigns are generating. As it turns out, in 3Q Cobb raised a record amount for this district (unlike Stefanik, the vast majority from within the district). As of this writing, we have yet to hear from the Stefanik campaign. Their silence is deafening.

Finally, and perhaps most disturbing, partly based on your erroneous, premature assumptions about her fundraising, you claim that Tedra Cobb is a “weak” candidate because she campaigns on “core values,” not specifics.

First, that’s just wrong: a review of her website shows for every general issue (e.g., healthcare, environment, economy) 5-6 specific actions Tedra will take. Secondly, when a congresswoman who despite overwhelming calls from her district to the contrary, nonetheless votes against the Affordable Care Act, the effect of which is to throw 64,000 North Country residents off healthcare without a replacement, a call for “core values” is sorely needed.

Treasures from the past

THE WAY WE WERE

Oct. 1, 1908 — One hundred and ten years ago, Henry Ford introduced his Model T automobile to the public market.

Oct. 2, 2005 — The tour boat Ethan Allen capsized on Lake George and twenty elderly tourists drowned.

Oct. 7, 1777 — The second battle of Saratoga was fought and Benedict Arnold lost his leg.

Oct. 13, 1963 — The Warren County Municipal Center dedication took place.

The center was opened to the public for the first time.

Oct. 15, 1995 — At 7:50 a.m., a transformer exploded at the Warren County Garage next door to the Warrensburg Landfill and caused a great deal of damage. (Note – I lived across the street and I felt my kitchen floor strongly lurch beneath my feet.)

Oct. 17, 2006 — The number of people living in the United States reached 300 million.

A TREASURE APPEARS FROM THE DISTANT PAST

Recently, I was reading the current issue of North Country Living Magazine, a fine magazine which is published four times a year by Denton Publications, the owners of this newspaper. In it was a captivating historical article by Kim Dedam about an Essex homeowner who found a worn leather record minute book from 1779 amid a stack of old books.

Dating from the time of the American Revolution, the book started on March

16, 1779 and obviously it was a continuation from a previous volume. The document recorded about six months of new Pennsylvania laws and discourse. It contained original minutes taken during Pennsylvania Assembly meetings in 1779 and no one has any idea how the book ended up in Essex County.

These entries were written just three years before Thomas Paine published his influential oration “Common Sense” which shifted Americans toward independence. I found all this very intriguing and it gave me pause in reminiscence of another great old book, although not nearly so old, which was discovered in Warrensburg.

A GLIMPSE THROUGH THE MIST

This Warrensburgh book was found by Richard Potter, a hometown contractor, in the midst of rubble while he was in the process of excavating the old parsonage of the town’s Methodist church with his bulldozer. This decrepit building stood on what is now the north side parking lot of the circa 1903 present day Methodist church.

On Christmas day in 1784, just five years after the minutes of the Essex book were written, the Methodists were the first to form a church organization.

The first pastor was Rev. Henry Ryan. A church was built in this town sometime around 1802. Before the church was built, a schoolhouse stood on the property.

This book, like a ghost from the distant past, languished in the Potter’s attic in Screven, Georgia for many years before I acquired it in 1990 as a gift from Lorraine Potter. Richard and Lorraine once owned the Warrensburg five and ten store.

TIME TAKES ITS TOIL

In the old days, with a sparse population, one man usually filled numerous jobs. Dr. Thomas Pattison, the judge of the county court mentioned above, came to the village of Thurman in 1805 and boarded with the family of Richardson Thurman. On Feb. 4, 1810 he married Elizabeth Thurman, the daughter of that family.

They moved to a farm later owned by John and James McGann and Dr. Pattison practiced medicine in this area until about 1850 or 1855. The couple had four sons and two daughters of record, but it is possible that there could have been more children. His daughters, Mrs. Sarah Carpenter and Miss C.E. Pattison lived in Warrensburgh.

A long vibrant life in this bygone area, such as that of Dr. Pattison, can be put here into only a few sparse sentences but his life must have been filled with adventure as he labored over the years to tend the sick and dying in that wild frontier. All we really have left of him today is his faded signature in this old Methodist church book. The good man died Feb. 6, 1867, just few years after the American Civil War.

The cover of the little book is made of wood and string binds it together. It is yellowed and somewhat crumbling with time, but it is actually in good shape considering its age. At the beginning of the book is a record of a church meeting on April 4, 1839 signed by Thomas Pattison, a judge of the county court of the county of Warren and notarized by George Woodward and Alvah Clement.

The faded ink and the judge’s 1800’s style pen and ink handwriting is not easy to decipher and details of the circumstances of just what went on at the meeting there are absent.

At that time, there were only two churches in town, the Methodist and the Presbyterian. It is difficult for us today to visualize just what town life was like in 1839. In that day, appropriations were made in town meetings for bounties on wolves, lynxes, wildcats and panthers killed within the town limits.

These bounties were offered as late as 1846 when town officials determined that the town was finally free of these beasts that grabbed their chickens in the dead of night and menaced their children.

STORIES FOR ANOTHER DAY

The book with the wooden cover mentioned many early Warrensburgh citizens, some related to citizens living here today, but those stories must wait here for another future column. THE JUDGE ARRIVED EARLY

The people in the book, now long returned to the dust from whence they came, were once live, vital, hard working people.

Warrensburgh did not become an official town until 1813 when it was set off from Thurman. It was named Warrensburgh at that time as it was previously called “The Bridge.” The first town meeting was held on April 3, 1813.

Early last week, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office told the media that a deputy was on standby at the school.

Johnsburg Central Superintendent Michael Markwica told the media mid-week that an extra adult would be traveling on school buses for at least several days and adults would be standing by as buses were arriving and departing.

Oct. 12, the Town of Webb Union Free School in Old Forge announced that school officials were aware that the woman had been spotted in their community, and that school security personnel and police would be monitoring activity on school grounds, WKTV-Utica reported.

North Creek resident Shannon Fonda, a parent who confronted the woman at Tops Supermarket Oct. 5, called 911 to describe what she was witnessing, and patrol officers of the Warren County Sheriff’s office showed up soon afterwards to investigate.

She said that young employees at a local convenience store told her that the woman asked questions about where they lived as well as security at the schools.

NORTH CREEK | A woman who has been approaching children and taking photos and videos of them recently around Johnsburg Central School prompted officials of the school to cancel afterschool activities for a week — and beef up security on school grounds.

After subsequent sightings of the woman occurred in a half-dozen other communities in Essex and Hamilton counties last week, several other schools issued warnings and fortified their security as well.

Parents of children attending Johnsburg Central received automated phone calls Oct. 5 and Oct. 8 describing the school’s actions — while parents exchanged their concerns in phone calls and on social media.

Mid-day Oct. 8, Johnsburg Central officials announced that the school would be canceling all afternoon school activities each day the week of through Oct. 12 due to the circumstances. A Facebook posting from the school that day cited that the woman had “continued to be a disruption through our community” and that additional security personnel would be posted at the

vehicle from Texas — although the woman was from New York City, according to police.

Later, Fonda said the woman was seen in Indian Lake at 1:40 p.m. Oct. 8 and at the Minerva Beach playground mid-afternoon Oct. 6— as well as at the Minerva Post office and in Blue Mountain Lake over that weekend.

Late last week, Town of Webb Police Chief told WKTV-Utica that the woman was pulled over in the Old Forge area for driving erratically, and she appeared in the town court to answer charges Oct. 11.

WPTZ reported that the Essex County Sheriff ’s Office had increased its presence at Minerva Central School as a precaution.

Fonda, who has been following the incidences, said Oct. 15 that the woman was also seen in Blue Mountain Lake, Newcomb, Long Lake, Thurman and Warrensburg and had been staying in Indian Lake.

State police as well as various other law authorities have interviewed the woman. A statement from state police late last week said that the woman hasn’t done anything illegal, and they believe the woman does not pose a threat to the public. ■

2018 FALL AUTO CARE How to safeguard your vehicle from the elements In a perfect world, all vehicle owners would be able to park their cars and trucks in

garages. In such a world, automobiles would not be vulnerable to sun, storms and other natural elements that, over time, can contribute to wear and tear.

But many drivers cannot or choose not to park their cars in garages. Some are content to let their vehicles brave the elements, while others look for ways to protect their cars and trucks as much as possible. Drivers who count themselves among the latter group can take these simple steps to protect their cars and trucks from whatever Mother Nature has in store for them.

• Park in the shade. Parking in the shade can protect both the interior and exterior of a vehicle. Shaded areas protect upholstery and dashboards inside the car from suninduced fading, while also limiting the damage sun can cause to exterior paint. Faded paint may hurt the resale value of a vehicle, prompting prospective buyers to walk away or at least wonder if a vehicle with a faded exterior was well maintained.

• Wash and wax. Washing and waxing a vehicle helps to minimize damage that’s inevitable regardless of where drivers park their cars. Dirt and debris litter roadways, and over time cars can collect a large amount of these unwanted stowaways. If dirt and

debris are not removed, they can cause long-term damage to vehicle exteriors. Washing and waxing a car can ensure its exterior looks good and reduce the likelihood of rust and other corrosion from occurring.

• Don’t write off bird droppings. Some drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages, may write off bird droppings as an annoying yet harmless side effect of vehicle ownership. However, bird droppings are acidic and, if left to their unsightly devices, can cause permanent damage to vehicle paint. Tree sap is an equally formidable foe, potentially causing scratching because it can be very difficult to remove without spreading. Specially formulated sprays can help drivers remove bird droppings and sap from their vehicles.

• Employ a car cover. Drivers who have garages but use them to store things other than their vehicles can use car covers when parking their cars in their driveways. Covers protect cars from the elements and can be quickly and easily removed.

Nature can be harsh on vehicles. Protecting automobiles from the elements should be a priority for drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages. ■

How to recognize potential brake problems Maintaining a vehicle is more than just a way to protect one’s financial investment.

Vehicle maintenence can protect against accidents and make the road safer for drivers and their passengers as well as their fellow motorists.

Fully functioning brakes are an important component of automotive safety. In its 2015 Crash Stats report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that brakerelated problems accounted for 22 percent of crashes where vehicular failure was cited as the cause of the collision. Bad brakes are particularly notorious for rear-end collisions.

Faulty, worn brake lines, antilock brake system malfunctions and worn brake pads and discs are some potential brake problems.

It is important that motorists learn to recognize the first symptoms of brake trouble so they can address issues before they put drivers, their passengers and other motorists at risk of accident or injury.

• Unusual noises: Screeching, grinding, rubbing, and high-pitched sounds are common indicators that brake pads, rotors and other parts of the braking system need attention.

Worn pads can cause damage to other vehicle parts, resulting in more expensive repairs if they’re not addressed promptly.

• Pulling: If the car pulls to one side when applying the brakes, this may indicate brake pad linings are wearing down unevenly. A brake adjustment may be necessary. Pulling also may be indicative of an object or debris caught in the brake fluid.

• Less responsive: If when pressing on the brake pedal the brakes just do not seem to be as effective as they once were, or it is necessary to press the pedal harder for the brakes to engage, there may be a brake fluid leak or an air leak. Check under the vehicle to see if any fluids are pooling.

• Pungent odors: Firestone Tire Company says a burning smell may be indicative of worn out brake pads and friction on the tires. Each of these issues require immediate attention.

• Vibrations: Certain vibrations may indicate brake issues. Rotors can become warped from metal-on-metal rubbing, potentially leading to a failure of the vehicle to brake properly. Vibrations also may indicate tires are misaligned. These problems can be properly assessed by a trained mechanic.

Do not let potential brake problems go unchecked. Keeping brakes in good working order helps drivers stop more readily and avoid collisions. ■

Two headlights are better than one: How changing headlights in pairs makes nighttime driving safer When it comes to vehicle maintenance, professional automotive technicians and organizations that promote safe driving have always advocated replacing certain safety components in their vehicles, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, in pairs.

Replacing parts in pairs ensures that the vehicle is properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and shocks that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same level of caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights, and turn signals that they do with other parts of their cars and trucks.

Why replace aging headlight bulbs?

Most drivers are not aware that headlight bulbs can wear out and degrade over time. As a result, headlights are often overlooked when drivers conduct routine vehicle maintenance.

As they age, headlight bulbs put out less light, which can dramatically compromise visibility at night, when drivers’ visual acuity is already naturally reduced by as much as 70 percent.

According to Lumileds, a leading lighting solutions company for the automotive industry, headlight bulbs begin to project significantly less light within two to three years of their initial installation, producing dimmer light outputs that can compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers.

Why replace bulbs two at a time?

Though replacing both headlight bulbs when only one is dimming may seem

unwarranted, maintaining a consistent light output from both headlights makes the road safer for drivers, their passengers and oncoming motorists. When only one bulb is replaced, the resulting light output can be both unbalanced and unpredictable, providing inadequate lighting that can compromise driver visibility. In addition, when one bulb burns out or starts dimming, the other bulb will likely follow, forcing drivers to deal with the expense and inconvenience of getting it replaced all over again.

How else can drivers improve visibility?

In addition to properly maintaining their headlights, drivers can take the following proactive measures to make nighttime driving safer.

• Replace worn out wiper blades each season or in three-month intervals to ensure adequate visibility during rain or snow.

• Clean interior glass and mirrors to remove any film-like buildup that reduces vision and creates hazy reflections from the sun. This is especially important for smokers who smoke while driving.

• Don’t hang accessories on rearview mirrors. This includes fuzzy dice, photos and other items that can be distracting and block your vision.

Fluids to check before your next road trip For many traveling enthusiasts, few things are more enticing than the open road. Road trips have long been popular, and that popularity appears to be on the rise.

According to a report from MMGY Global, a travel and hospitality marketing firm, road trips represented 39 percent of vacations taken by United States travelers in 2016.

Road trips also remain popular in Canada, where vast, rugged terrain makes for idyllic trips.

Before embarking on road trips, motorists would be wise to inspect their vehicles to ensure their getaways are not derailed by car troubles.

• Brake fluid: Squeaky brakes are not the only potential indicator of brake problems.

Brake fluid, which should always be topped off before beginning a road trip, also might shed light on potentially serious problems. According to the National Motorists Association, brake fluid looks honey-like and translucent when fresh. A puddle beneath a vehicle that is clear to brown and slick indicates a brake fluid leak, which can ultimately lead to a complete failure of the brakes. The NMA recommends brake fluid be changed at least once every three to four years.

• Transmission fluid: When fresh, transmission fluid is red, darkening over time.

However, transmission fluid should never appear brown or black, which indicates potential internal damage to the transmission. To determine if there are any issues with the transmission fluid, the NMA recommends drivers wipe a cool dipstick between

Warriors’ two soccer squads win Adk. League titles

LAKE GEORGE | Both the Lake George boys and girls soccer teams won their respective 2018 Adirondack League soccer championships this week, and the deciding games were against the same school: Fort Ann. The Warrior girls defeated the Cardinals 2-0 on Oct. 13, and the boys team won their title a day earlier by a score of 2-1.

Although they have been ranked No. 1 in the state for Class C Soccer most of this season, the Lake George Boys Soccer team had a tough battle on their hands Oct. 12 as they took on perennial foe Fort Ann for the Adirondack League championship.

The Warriors prevailed, however, primarily due to an aggressive start.

About four minutes into the game, senior outside midfielder Colin Leonelli dribbled in along the goal line, passed

to junior striker Ethan Knauf who in turn relayed an accurate shot across the six-yard box to senior forward Phillip Shambo — who slammed the ball into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

“Early on, our players had Fort Ann on their heels with crisp passes, playing fast, setting the tone of the game,” 37-year Warrior coach Blake White said.

About 10 minutes later, Fort Ann was awarded a penalty shot, and Brendan Wright scored successfully — the first goal allowed by the Warriors in Adirondack League play this year.

About 15 minutes into the second half, Kagan Helms took a free kick granted to Lake George, kicked it perfectly to where Alex Leonelli was running, and the latter headed it into the goal to give his team a 2-1 lead.

In response, Fort Ann employed their quick transition game, trying to catch the Warriors off-guard, but the Warriors held them off. Warrior goaltender Mason Flatley successfully defended the net with the help of defensive teammates Helms, Dan Pushor, Colby Seguljic and Patrick Huber.

The Warrior girls soccer team won their third consecutive league title with a balanced attack against Fort Ann. Center-forward Sarah Kohls scored two goals in the first half and the Lake George defensive players held off Fort Ann’s attempts to retaliate.

Their efforts extended the Warriors unparalleled streak of Adirondack League victories to 40 consecutive games. ■

Warriors get their mojo back, earn playoff berth

LAKE GEORGE | The Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne football team, determined to play in the off-season, bounced back from a two-game losing streak by defeating Granville Oct. 13 by a score of 40-6.

The win secured a Section II Class C playoff berth for the Warriors, who had been undefeated through their first four games of 2018.

Senior fullback Jimmy Kelleher was key to the victory — he charged through Granville’s defense to gain 96 yards and four touchdowns over the game.

Coach Jeff Bennett said there was no secret to Kelleher’s ability to gain yardage.

“Jimmy’s been working hard all year in

the weight room — he’s the strongest kid in Section II,” he said, noting Kelleher was a top competitor in powerlifting.

One factor that was a secret — at least to Granville — was that Lake George had figured out their defense and gained a lot of yardage off their observations.

After the Warriors saw how Granville’s defense was shutting down their laterals to various backs, they started faking tosses — drawing Granville’s defenders to the outside, leaving space for Kelleher and other backs to run up the middle.

The play worked a number of times, giving the Warriors critical yardage they needed for the win. Bennett credited his offensive line for blocking “superbly” for not only this series of plays, but throughout the game.

“We brought them down off the edges, and they bottled Granville up,” the coach said, noting that Colby Hoolihan, Cameron Duers and Kevin Mason were “very physical” defenders in the middle.

Also, Bennett credited the Warriors for forcing four turnovers. Andrew Warner had a fumble recovery and an interception, and quarterback Michael Johnson also recovered a Granville fumble, Bennett said.

“Cole and Shane Clarke were all over the field,” he added.

started off the Warriors’ scoring tirade with a 10-yard touchdown run, his team’s sole scoring for the first quarter.

Other big plays included a pass from Johnson to receiver Sean Butkowski. With 20 seconds or so left in the half, Johnson launched a pass to Butkowski for a 42-yard gain. Moments later, Butkowski pulled down a pass in the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown which ended the stanza with the Warriors establishing a 26-8 advantage.

Another play that pumped up the crowd was Duers picking up a Granville onsides kick and taking in downfield to the one yard line.

The victory gave the warriors their first playoff berth since 2009, Bennett said with a smile.

“Now, we hope to make more history,” he said. ■

Burghers prevail over Whitehall, clinch Class D

WARRENSBURG | Several forceful defensive stops were key to the Warrensburg football team’s 36-12 win Oct. 12 over the physical and tough Whitehall squad.

Coach Mike Perrone praised his team’s performance.

“Our defense came up huge — with a handful of fourthdown and red-zone stops, two interceptions plus forced fumbles,” he said.

The win confirmed Warrensburg as the top team in Class D Section II — and underscored their No. 9 Class D state ranking, expected to rise when the next poll is calculated.

In the third quarter the scoreboard read 19-12 as Whitehall had the ball The Railroaders were seeking to at least tie the score, but Warrensburg’s defense had contained their drive and Whitehall faced a fourth down with a few yards to go.

Whitehall decided to go for the first down, but the Burghers stuffed their runner short of the marker.

Then, after gaining a few yards on an initial play, senior Burgher quarterback Evan MacDuff jogged to Perrone standing on the sidelines, and told him that Whitehall’s defense was drawn in to defend against the Burghers’ ground game.

“Their defense is tight,” MacDuff told Perrone.

The two decided to take a risk — fake a run, and pass to junior running back Jesse Griffin. Moments later, Griffin took off straight downfield, and MacDuff lead him with a perfectly placed 18-yard pass. Jesse reached, pulled it in as he was running, and charged to the end zone for a 37-yard touchdown play, Perrone recalled.

“It was a great throw and catch — Jesse just took it in stride as he was running vertical,” he said. “It gave us a good lead and a lot of confidence.”

The Burghers resolute defense and aggressive offense kept that lead expanding from them on.

MacDuff ran for three of the Burghers’ touchdowns and Dylan Winchell, who ran 67 yards on six plays, scored the final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Turnovers were also a vital factor in the win. Griffin and 8th grader Tristen Hitchcock each snagged an interception, and junior Mac Baker and senior Hunter Mosher each recovered a fumble — forced by seniors Colden Wells and Brandon Bailey.

It’s fortunate that the Burghers were so focused — Whitehall was employing a run-or-pass option-from-shotgun offense that Perrone and his team hadn’t seen in any of the Railroaders’ game films.

The Burghers’ achievement didn’t go unnoticed — there were 650 or so spectators in the stands cheering them on,

The pumpkin drop was held at the site of the former Blarneystone property. The genie lift soared over 65 feet in the air where pumpkins of varying weights and sizes plunged to the ground in an attempt to hit Long Lake’s Blarneystone rock on the ground. Erik Arsenault, of Long Lake Parks and Recreation and operator Jon worked together. Arsenault hit the Blarney rock five out of seven times. The largest pumpkin dropped weighed in at 86 pounds 4 ounces.

Perrone said.

“The players and spectators love Warrensburg’s annual night game” he said.

Perrone added that Warrensburg’s players were motivated in the victory by another factor: for weeks earlier this season, Whitehall was ranked above the Burghers by sportswriters.

“It added fuel to the fire,” he said.

Next up for Warrensburg is a crossover game this weekend — likely to be against a C school but as of Sunday, the matchup wasn’t set.

The first round of Section II playoffs is up next, a Sept.

27 game against Fort Edward. ■

Santanoni receives money for stabilization Great Camp to get new roof

NEWCOMB | Once on the brink of being allowed to decay back into the forest, the Santanoni great camp has received a $370,000 from the National Park Service that will significantly stabilize the 125-year-old retreat for years to come.

Most notably, the camp will receive a new roof made of western cedar shingles — no small job on a building whose footprint artistically unfolds over 15,000 square feet.

“The roof is such a big feature of the camp,” said Steven Engelhart executive director of Adirondack Architectural Heritage, an organization that formed to save Santanoni, and has since branched into other architectural interests.

Engelhart said the roof was replaced 20 years ago with

asphalt shingles at a time when there was neither money nor the commitment to do the job right.

The wood roof is historically accurate and will give visitors a better idea of how the camp appeared when it was a boisterous summer playground for the family of Robert Pruyn, a prominent Albany banker, politician and diplomat.

“When the current asphalt shingle roof was installed on Santanoni’s main lodge about 20 years ago, the unit management plan for the camp had not been adopted nor had it been designated as historic under the State Land Master Plan, so we could only take the project so far,” Engelhart said in a statement announcing the project. “Now were are in a position to more fully remediate and restore these important features of the main lodge.”

Along with the roof, the grant will also pay for foundation stabilization, log replacement, masonry repairs and flashing. All are areas of critical need, Engelhart said, as evidenced by bracing that currently is in place to reinforce a portion of the foundation.

The grant to Adirondack Architectural Heritage will be equally matched by other Camp Santanoni partners, including the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the Town of Newcomb and the Friends of Camp Santanoni.

The projects are expected to be completed by 2020s.

The original Santanoni compound included 12,900 acres, including a lake, forests and a working dairy farm. The lodge was designed by architect Robert Robertson, which was inspired by the Pruyn’s deep interest in Japan. It was made to resemble the outline of a phoenix, pointed into the wind that routinely blew in from the lake.

Santanoni was acquired by New York state in 1972, but not with preservation in mind. Under the edict of Forever Wild, the state began to tear down the man-made structures, but — there being four dozen of them — soon ran out of inspiration, giving the camp’s defenders time to ride to its rescue.

Today, Santanoni remains the only one of the Adirondack’s storied great camps to be owned by the state. ■

The town personnel received the Sustainable Winter Management Program certification from Phill Sexton of WIT Advisors at The Fund for Lake George’s 4th annual Salt Summit held Oct. 3 at Fort William Henry Resort in Lake George.

More than 100 highway superintendents, property managers, entrepreneurs and scientists attended the event.

The town of Lake George has reduced its road salt use by 30 percent over the last two years, according to Eric Siy of The Fund.

The environmental group is coordinating an ongoing effort to reduce road salt usage by at

Siy praised the town board for “outstanding leadership” in protecting the environment and the town highway workers for their “day-to-day commitment” to implementing the salt-reduction initiative.

Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson said the town officials were “extremely proud” of the efforts to protect Lake George’s watershed and economy.

“Our Highway Department team takes their responsibility very seriously and works very hard to keep our roads safe,” he said, noting that the effort also substantially reduces the expense to taxpayers of de-icing materials.

Lake George Waterkeeper Chris Navitsky said that the efforts of the town government in reducing road salt usage have a “meaningful impact” on water quality.
