Regional officials to examine town gov’t biomass boiler By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

CHESTERTOWN | This weekend, dozens of government officials from across New York’s Capital Region will be visiting Chestertown to see how the town government is heating their Municipal Center in an efficient and environmentally sustainable manner. On Saturday Oct. 6, the town of Chester and the Capital District Regional Planning Commission are jointly sponsoring an open house at the Chester Municipal Center to show off the high-efficiency wood pellet heating plant that town officials have had installed and is now in operation. The event is to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett said. See WOOD-PELLET HEATING » pg. 8

Project to build new Middleton Bridge advances New span expected to boost public safety By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

Consulting engineers Khaled Yousef plus Rick Handley of Rick Handley & Associates run a test on the town of Chester’s wood-pellet heating system in November 2017 prior to a ribbon-cutting ceremony held for the innovative, high-efficiency installation. This Saturday, dozens of regional officials will be examining the wood-fired boiler, which saves money, provides heat quickly, and is considered an environmentally friendly, carbon-neutral heating technology. The Sun file photo

HORICON | An effort to construct a new bridge in northern Warren County moved forward this week — and the span is envisioned to boost public safety in rural portions of the towns of Horicon, Chester, Warrensburg and Bolton. The 117-year-old Middleton Bridge, closed for about a decade due to its deteriorating condition, extends across the Schroon River between the towns of Warrensburg and Bolton. Plans to replace it with a new bridge 1.8 miles north

on the Schroon River— 1.8 miles north of the existing span — have been stalled due to many years of legal and legislative wrangling. On Oct. 18, the Warren County Board of Supervisors committed $557,547 towards the new bridge’s engineering and right-of-way acquisition costs, anticipating that the state and federal governments will eventually be refunding the money. Local taxpayers are expected to pay about 5 percent of the construction expense of the bridge, anticipated to cost between $3 million and $4 million, with the remainder paid by the federal and state governments. The old Middleton Bridge had connected Schroon River Road with East Schroon River Road, and its closure has caused a detour of up to 10 extra minutes for residents and enterprises on the east side of the river including the popular Ridin’ Hy Ranch, a major area employer. Voter verification goes digital in Warren County scan the license’s bar code, which prompts instant registration verification. The verification process is color coded — a solid green background on the tablet’s screen means the citizen is allowed to vote, a yellow matrix means the voter needs to provide more information, and a red background means the voter has already voted or isn’t registered. Also, the tablets will instantly determine if a voter shows up at the wrong location. If this is the case, the device redirects voters to the proper poll site’s address, either by describing driving instructions or pinpointing the poll site on a map, or sending driving directions to the voter’s smartphone.

Early Voting schedule detailed By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

QUEENSBURY | Starting with the upcoming election in Warren County, citizens showing up to vote won’t be watching election inspectors fl ip through multiple pages in old hardback poll books to check them in. Instead, voters will be registered in less time and with greater convenience, as the election inspectors will be using digital tablet devices to verify their registration. When a voter checks in, an inspector will instantly confirm the person’s identity on the basis of a name and address, then the tablet will be flipped 90 degrees on a stand for the voter to sign in. Birthdates are included in the stored identification data. A person can choose to check in with their driver’s license, and the tablet’s camera can

At the county Board of Elections headquarters in Queensbury, Republican Warren County Election Commissioner William Van Ness and Democratic county Election Commissioner Beth McLaughlin demonstrate the new tablet-based digital voter verification system which is being implemented in the county beginning this election cycle — including this week’s Early Voting sessions. Prospect Mtn. Highway open at no charge Nov. 2-3 By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | In a promotion to honor U.S. veterans and military personnel, scenic views of Lake George and its surroundings will again be available to the public at no charge next weekend. The general public as well as veterans and their families will be welcome to drive up Prospect Mountain on Veterans Memorial Highway, with no admission charge, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday Nov. 2 and Sunday Nov. 3. The highway to the mountain’s summit is controlled by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, which normally collects a $10 toll per vehicle. Years ago, the roadway had been routinely closed through the winter months, beginning in mid-October. But in 2015, veterans Dennis Galloway and

Graveyard walk prompts father-daughter reunion By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

JOHNSBURG | Area residents and visitors were introduced to prominent local citizens of a bygone era through the annual Graveyard Walk event conducted recently by actors of the locallybased Gem Radio Theatre, in collaboration with the Johnsburgh Historical Society and the North Creek Depot Museum. The event was held at the Union Cemetery in Johnsburg, with the actors depicting people who were buried in this pastoral plot, narrating their characters’ life stories, while garbed in clothing of their era. This year, the Gem Theatre personnel honored a World War II solider from Johnsburg named Robert Sabattis — and the presentation had a prompted a remarkable reunion. Robert died at age 25 from wounds suffered in the war,

and he met his seven-month-old daughter just days before he passed away. Robert’s brother Vic, also a soldier from Johnsburg, traveled home to get the baby and bring her to his bedside so he could see her for the first time. The baby, Roberta, now 75 years old, traveled from Schenectady to attend the Graveyard Walks event — to hear her father’s story at the Union Cemetery, told by Andy Collins of Blue Mt. Lake. Roberta brought along portraits of her father Robert and her Uncle Victor, some albums, and his purple heart for his courageous service in the war. She told other Graveyard Walk participants that she never really knew her father, since she was an infant when he died, and the time spent at his grave hearing his story helped her understand aspects of his life, according to Gem Theatre member Robin Jay. “She said she felt his presence that night,” Jay said. Roberta’s mother, an Albany area resident who was 95 and

I have a vision for moving Warrensburg into the 21st century which includes tapping our natural resources. The “Hospitality Industry” is all around us and yet we haven’t capitalized on what we have right here. Tourism comes in many forms and we are fortunate to have two beautiful rivers right in town for people to enjoy. Now is the time to examine just how to attract folks to enjoy hiking on our mountains, biking on our rural roads, and canoing and kayaking on our rivers. When we make Warrensburg a destination for these activities our visitors will also spend time and money at our restaurants and hotels. They may even decide to do some “Glamorous Camping” while here. We are fortunate to have Cronin’s Golf Course on the outskirts of town on the river banks of the Hudson. Marketing Warrensburg needs to be our mission.

the change. The initiative has since become a popular tradition — as many as 2,000 vehicles have annually taken the trip up the mountain during the weekend prior to Veterans Day. From Late May to November 2018, more than 67,000 people took the drive up Prospect Mountain, which in favorable weather provides a 100-mile view which includes the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack High Peaks as well as the southern end of Lake George. “This is an opportunity to enjoy majestic views, take scenic photos and enjoy great fellowship, while honoring our nation’s veterans — past, present and future,” Galloway said of the trip up the 5.5-mile highway, adding that services atop Prospect Mountain are not scheduled. Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway, which intersects state Rte. 9 just south of Lake George Village, can be accessed by Exit 21 of I-87 Northway. ■

NORTH CREEK CELEBRATES VETERANS

Post 629 seeking new members for legion, squadron

NORTH CREEK | American Legion Post 629 of North Creek hosted a 50th Vietnam War Commemoration Ceremony recently. LTC (R) Nick Laiacona and CSM (R) Bob Van Pelt, both Executive Committee members of the Capital District of NY Chapter, Association of the United States Army (AUSA), were in attendance to present a brief presentation and the awarding of pins to 18 Vietnam veterans, one surviving spouse and three surviving siblings. In all, there were

more than 40 people in attendance at the North Creek Firehouse. “It was a very emotional evening and was appreciated by all,” a press release said. Both Nick and Bob are members of the American Legion, Nick in Bolton Landing, Post 961, and Bob in Indian Lake, Post 1392. On July 30, 2019, President Donald Trump signed into effect a law called The LEGION Act (Let Everyone Get Involved in Opportunities for National Service Act). Previously, membership for the American Legion was limited to certain periods of service. Previously, there were seven war eras; now there are two: April 6, 1917-Nov. 11, 1918, and Dec. 7,1941, to a time later to be determined by the federal government.

North Creek Post 629 is also seeking male descendants of any veteran to join them in rejuvenating the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 629. This is an organization allowing any male descendant the opportunity to help support the American Legion. It was originally established in 1936. Anyone interested in joining either the American Legion, or the Squadron are encouraged to contact Commander Paul Sears at circleswood@gmail.com or 518-791-3458. ■

2019 FALL AUTO CARE

CHANGING THE OIL

When, with what, and how

By Chelle Cordero CREATORS.COM

Oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle, so keeping it clean, fresh and topped off is crucial to the well-being of your automobile. Oil helps lubricate the moving parts of your car and will keep it running cooler and smoothly. So when should you change it, and with what? Your best friend and adviser as to when to change your oil and what weight and type to use is your auto manufacturer; check your owners manual for recommended service times and viscosity (weight) of the oil. The manufacturer may also recommend whether you should use a synthetic oil or you should use a mineral oil. If you hear a ticking sound while you are stopped, that is generally a sign that you are low on oil, and it should be checked immediately. Manufacturer recommendations usually fall somewhere in between three

illage LAKE V Auto GEORGE

months/3,000 miles and 24 months/20,000 miles. Newer cars are built for maximum performance. Keep in mind that most manufacturers assume that your car’s use is light-duty, so be sure to make adjustments for heavy-duty use if you use your vehicle for towing, for a lot of stop-and-go driving, for climbing mountains or in severe weather conditions. It’s a good idea to routinely check the oil level in between changes (using the dipstick), topping the oil off if it’s low. Viscosity is the fluid’s resistance to flow and is manufacturer-measured at zero degrees Fahrenheit. Hot weather thins motor oil, whereas cold weather thickens it. The less resistant an oil is to thinning the greater the difference between the two numbers will be on an oil’s label. For example, 10W-30 has less viscosity than 20W-50. Though thicker oil is better for lubrication, if it is too thick it can be harder to start the engine and will reduce fuel economy. The American Petroleum Institute grades oils using SM for gasoline engines and CJ-4 for diesels, but be sure to use the viscosity recommended by your car’s manufacturer.

For do-it-yourselfers: Have necessary new oil and a new oil filter on hand. Change your oil on level ground. Let the vehicle idle for about 10 minutes to warm the engine. Apply the parking brake and use wheel chocks before jacking up the vehicle. Use jack stands, as well. Place a drain pan under the engine, and remove the oil cap. Remove the oil plug. (Check the manual schematic for location.) Let the oil drain out completely. Replace the plug with a new washer. Locate and unscrew the oil filter. (Check schematic for location.) Let the old filter sit in a plastic bag. Pour a small amount of oil into the new filter, and wipe the opening with the oil. Screw the new filter in place as tightly as the manufacturer’s directions say. Add new oil at the oil fill hole; check the manual for how much oil you need. Replace the fi ll cap, and remove the drain pan. Remove the jack stands, and lower the car. Wipe up any drips you see before starting the engine. ■

There are three main motor oil types on the market. Group 4 oil, branded as synthetic, is made from simpler compounds and fine-tuned to adjust viscosity, allowing for more flexibility in high and low temperatures. Group 3 lubricant is a synthetic blend made from reprocessed petroleum products. Mineral motor oil is the least expensive and made from a mix of crude oils. All of the oils will do the job well as long as you are using oil that has the correct viscosity. Many owners of new and high-performance cars prefer to use synthetic oil in their engines. There is concern that changing to synthetic oil after using mineral oil for a long time could cause sludge from engine deposits to break off.

Serving North Country seniors in Congress The Supporting Family Caregivers Act addresses families who are caring for their aging loved ones and encourages the use of individual assessments to identify the needs of those specific caregivers, which allows for more targeted services. Often, seniors who are living in their homes rely on family and community members to assist them in day-to-day tasks, and for transportation to medical appointments, among other places they want to travel to in order to live a fulfilling life. Many seniors in our district rely on close family members to support them, and this approach ensures that both the caregivers, and those who are being cared for, are provided with the opportunity for the best possible health outcomes. The second piece is a bipartisan effort that I co-led, the Younger Onset Alzheimer’s Act. This heartbreaking disease unfortunately affects a significant number of people in our district, and those who are diagnosed under the age of 60 face specific challenges. This legislation ensures that individuals of any age who live with Alzheimer’s receive full recognition under the law and adequate access to services supported by the Older Americans Act. Another important, and especially unique, group of older Americans who deserve devoted care are the nearly 80,000 Holocaust Survivors living among us in the United States. The TIME (Trauma-Informed Modernization of Eldercare) for Holocaust Survivors Act specifically codifies into law an existing national center devoted to meeting the specific needs of Holocaust survivors, veterans, and survivors of other historical trauma. We must not ignore the unique risk that institutionalization could

In all my days I’ve never seen the politics of our nation sink so low. Oh, I’ve been disappointed by the actions of both sides of the aisle in the past, but with each passing week, they seem to find new ways of tearing the country down while placing blame on the other side. The bottom line is there are two sides to every disagreement, but in the end, fair play and cooler heads generally rule the day. Of course, in our past, the media didn’t take sides and would universally call out bad behavior. Today there is no room for reasonable women and men to get together and hash out their differences for the betterment of the country. We now live in the era of seeking out areas of difference and exploiting them for political gain. It’s gotten so bad that even those from the same political party will turn on each other with no regard for civility or respect. Last week Hillary Clinton accused a Democrat member of Congress, who is running for president, of being a Russian asset. She presented no evidence or facts to back up her position. Instead, she just put it out there and at the same time, threw the same label on another U.S. citizen who is running for president on the Green Party ticket. The mafia and drug cartels operate with greater respect for their competitors than many of those who represent us today in the nation’s capital. This goes for Republicans as well as Democrats. If one side is for something, the other side is diametrically opposed. And now, even within the two parties, dissension is met with insults and backstabbing. Sadly, until they start acting more responsibly and with greater credibility, their actions will be emulated throughout the nation and beyond. And it will only grow worse in the days, months, and years ahead. Our nation was once an inspiration for others, not just because of freedom and riches but because of the way we governed our selves. With each election, the people’s government ebbed and flowed from one party’s rule to another peacefully. Working together, the parties came together to govern and conduct the people’s business. Those days have nearly come to an end. We can only hope that when future generations look back on this era they can laugh about how foolish we were. I sincerely hope they do not look back on this being the beginning of the end of the once-great democracy that destroyed itself from within. ■ — Dan Alexander is the publisher of the Sun Community News.

As the Representative for one of the largest constituencies of seniors in the country, it is my obligation to bring attention to the important issues that surround them and their families. Our district is home to a significant number of seniors who live in rural communities, which can present challenges when it comes to affordable and convenient care. All elderly Americans deserve our support as they rely on individualized care into their elder years, and it is critical that we pay close attention to meeting their needs. That is why I am proud to have led the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act (OAA), a bipartisan effort that aims to uphold and enhance support for both older Americans and those who care for them. This five-year authorization not only significantly increases funding, but it improves the delivery and quality of services to older constituents, ensuring that if they prefer to remain in their communities, they can stay there. Programs like Meals on Wheels, which is included in this legislation, are integral to providing seniors with social and nutritional services that they rely on. As part of the reauthorization, I was glad that three critical pieces of my original legislation were included; the Supporting Family Caregivers Act, the Younger Onset Alzheimer’s Act, and the TIME (Trauma-Informed Modernization of Eldercare) for Holocaust Survivors Act.

Help at Home

Friday, Horicon Supervisor Matt Simpson hailed the progress on the project. “When the new bridge is completed in 2022 or 2023, first responders will be able to get to a emergency scene much more quickly than they can now,” Simpson said noting that various seasonal homes and Skye Farm children’s Camp are among effected by the detour. The issues of emergency response times to these buildings and public safety isn’t merely theoretical — the main lodge at Ridin’ Hy was destroyed by fire both in 1982 and 2017. Part of the delay in replacing the Middleton Bridge has been the issue of a small piece of land to be involved in the placement of the new bridge. At first, various state agencies argued the status of the one-third of an acre — whether or not it was classified as protected state Forest Preserve, not subject to development. After it was determined to be Forest Preserve, talks began about a land swap to compensate for the re-designation of the land. Two years ago, the public voted to approve a state Constitutional amendment which established a “land bank” so local governments could swap up to 250 acres to be added as Forest Preserve in exchange for land they needed for qualifying projects. These qualifying tasks included straightening town and county roads crossing the Forest Preserve and to install water, sewer electric and telecommunication lines — as well as locating bike paths on the roadway’s shoulders. Since then, details of the specific swap involving the one-third acre in question have been negotiated, passed in the state legislature, and signed by Gov. Cuomo — but the title transfer is still in process, Simpson said. “This has been a long process,” he said, predicting the title transfer would be accomplished by Dec. 30. ■

— Rep. Elise Stefanik serves as the U.S. Representative for New York’s 21st congressional district

From MIDDLETON BRIDGE » pg. 1

To the Editor: For years residents of the Thurman/Athol area have been dodging potholes and patches on the road from Warrensburg to home. After years of this way of driving and car repairs, the road has been resurfaced and is smooth. Maybe not the best thing. Folks have difficulty finding their way to and from work or shopping, some even missing the evening meal while trying to remember the path they used to travel. The improved road surface may also have been the result of several accidents in the recent past. One by the Brown resident turn, another in the ditch on the straight-a-way hitting the culvert between the old Sit and Bull ranch and before the same turn. Another by the Tub house turn. High speed or distractions, looking for obstacles or maybe falling asleep for lack of them. But never fear, the DPW to the rescue. We now have a rumble strip down the middle of the winding country road from Thurman station to just past the Tub house turn. Another way to beat ball joints and shocks and help keep auto repair shops in business. Perhaps also a way to help the residents and others find their way. Just listen for the rumble and stay on the right side. — Carl Thomas, Stony Creek ■

present to Holocaust survivors. This legislation seeks to offer opportunities to allow these men and women, who have suffered unconscionably from past trauma, to live healthy and independent lives throughout their elder years. With the inclusion of my legislation, I was proud to lead the effort to directly benefit North Country seniors. I have been fortunate to visit many of our senior centers and retirement communities where I have the opportunity to serve them meals, and they continually express their growing concerns about resources available to them and their families. They have given us their time as devoted members of our North Country communities, and I feel it is my duty as their Representative in Congress to ensure they are taken care of. No senior should be left without critical services to support them. My offices are devoted to constituent casework on a multitude of issues concerning seniors, including VA benefits and Social Security claims. We have successfully claimed over $1.7 million in Social Security benefits, helped recover over $2.7 million in savings, and positively resolved over 570 cases for North Country seniors. We must not only continue to assist them in identifying their needs, but also continue to invest in solutions that fulfill those needs – and that’s exactly what the Older Americans Act does. As a member of Congress, I am dedicated to continuing to advocate for our seniors at the federal level and provide constant support for them and their families. ■

Alzheimer’s Association plans fundraising walk QUEENSBURY | The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting northern Saratoga and Adirondack residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 9 a.m. at SUNY Adirondack and is presented by Herzog Law Firm and Fingerpaint Marketing. On walk day, participants will honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with flowers during the poignant Promise Garden Ceremony – a moving display of hope to represent the personal reasons participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s. The honorees at this year’s ceremony include three individuals. A husband diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and his wife who is providing care - Darlene and Dave Rozell are from Glens Falls and very well-respected in the community. Dave was the Assistant Superintendent of BOCES and at one point knew upwards of 1,000 names. His memory is starting to fail him, but he still retains his sense of humor. Darlene is his primary caregiver and says it’s hard to see her strong, confident husband slowly slip away, but she has reached out to the Alzheimer’s Association for

programs and support groups, which have helped immensely. A Glens Falls native who recently lost her husband - Sue Merrill is attending the walk to help keep her husband’s spirit alive, as well as lend an ear to anyone who is dealing with Alzheimer’s; she says it’s deeply moving to see her community come together to fight for a world without Alzheimer’s. A Glens Falls Hospital nurse practitioner working in neurology and exclusively seeing patients with dementia - Ruth Fish is a strong advocate for the fight against Alzheimer’s and encourages everyone to start taking care of their brains early. She works with families dealing with Alzheimer’s every day and is passionate about finding a cure. Additionally, participants can learn about Alzheimer’s Association programs and services, clinical trial and advocacy opportunities and engage with corporate sponsors. The Walk will feature music by DJ Stantastic and light refreshments. “We are grateful for the support of the Northern Saratoga and Adirondack communities who always come together for our Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Funds raised from Walk allow

us to provide free care and support programs to caregivers and those affected by Alzheimer’s disease throughout our region,” said Elizabeth Smith-Boivin, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York. “As part of our Promise Garden Ceremony, we have a child hold a white flower to symbolize the first survivor of Alzheimer’s. This is the only disease among the top 10 causes that cannot be cured, prevented or even slowed. It is our hope that one day we will live in a world without Alzheimer’s and the crowd will be filled with white flower holders.” In New York state alone, there are 400,000 people living with Alzheimer’s disease and more than one million unpaid caregivers. In the United States, 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and it is the sixth-leading cause of death. Additionally, more than 16 million family and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Participants can join a team or register to walk as an individual at alz.org/walk. ■

Wbg officials seek to arm town court officer CORRESPONDENT

WARRENSBURG | In an initiative to protect public safety, the Warrensburg Town board advanced a resolution Oct. 9 to enact a local law which enables a designated Warrensburg town court officer to be armed. The local law creates a position of Warrensburg Town Constable, a title which under state law allows an individual guarding court proceedings to carry a weapon. A public hearing on the proposed local law is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 13, 2019 during the regular monthly town board meeting. In other business, the board voted to purchase two new trucks from Warren Ford, the low bidder: an F-250 four-wheel-drive pickup for the town highway department, and a F-550 four-wheel drive cab and chassis for the town Water Department. No bid was received on a project to demolish and remove all structures at 47 River St. Town Supervisor Kevin Geraghty said that if the a

pending asbestos inspection bears a negative outcome, town employees may demolish the structures and and remove the demolition debris — at a substantial savings to taxpayers. Also, Town Board member Linda Marcella reported that the annual World’s Largest Garage Sale held the prior weekend in Warrensburg attracted one of the largest crowds in the last decade, yet traffic congestion was substantially reduced this year. The reason, she said, was that far more visitors parked outside the hamlet and rode the shuttle buses to town. “There were as many as 3,000 cars parked on the county fairgrounds, and way more people rode the buses this year,” she said. “It was a lot easier to get through town.” Additionally, the board approved a resolution amending the town landfill fees — converting the chages to 10 cents per pound for household trash and 45 cents per pound for all electronic devices. Other rules and charges on refuse and recyclables are detailed on flyers available at the town clerk’s office. Residents are encouraged to use up their landfill payment punch-cards as soon as possible.

In other matters undertaken at the Oct. 9 meeting, the Warrensburg Town Board: • heard that the town received letters from resident Catherine Evans-LaFond complaining about noisy parties at a nearby residence utilized as a short-term rental; and that a memorandum was received from town Health Officer Bryan Smead suggesting that a residence on River Street be condemned — but board members noted that the property owner was ill, and that additional time was needed before condemnation to determine if assistance could be obtained; • was informed that the state Comptroller’s office determined that the town of Warrensburg is in good enough financial shape to avoid the state’s “Fiscally Stressed” status; • were told by Geraghty that the Northern Lights Apartment complex at 23 Sanford St. is now included in the sewer system and is billed as an “out of district” user; • learned that work has been completed on the sewer system that extends up Schroon River Road to Countryside Adult Home and the adjacent Cornell Cooperative Extension offices;

Drug take-back day planned in Queensbury WARREN COUNTY | The Drug Enforcement Administration and government, community, public health and law enforcement partners have announced a nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back” initiative that seeks to prevent increased pill abuse and theft. DEA will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs and over the counter medications for destruction at sites nationwide on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. “This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue,” a press release from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office said. “Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.” A local site will be set up at the lobby of the Warren County Sheriff’s Office at 1400 State Route 9, next to the Warren County Municipal Center in Queensbury. Collection sites in every local community can be found by going to dea.gov. This site will be continuously updated with new take-back locations. Other participants in this initiative include the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy; the Partnership for a DrugFree America; the International Association of Chiefs of

Police; the National Association of Attorneys General; the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy; the Federation of State Medical Boards; and the National District Attorneys Association. Any inquiries can be directed to Lt. Steven Stockdale at 518-743-2514. ■

To the Editor, As a practicing lawyer in the 4th Judicial District for over forty-four (44) years I have encountered Judges at all levels, from Town Courts to Supreme Court and beyond. Like Lawyers, Judges are not perfect. Members of the Bench, like members of the Bar, can be good, bad and/or ugly. With that reality in mind, choosing a Supreme Court Justice is not a choice that should be taken lightly. The candidate must possess various qualities from obvious fairness to an ability to tackle hard problems and to help resolve those problems with the assistance of competent trial counsel. Julie Garcia has those qualities and then some. Julie Garcia should be elected to our Supreme Court to serve all residents of the Fourth Judicial District but especially those residents who reside in counties north of Saratoga where the core of a Supreme Court Justice can be measured by not only formal education (Siena College and Albany Law School) but more importantly, by the education that comes from a tough life. Julie Garcia understood at an early age that “Life is difficult” to quote from The Road Less Traveled. For a great insight into Julie Garcia's background, take a look at the New York State Bar Association web page under State Bar News and in particular, a column on the lives of five (5) Rural Lawyers. After you read that brief outline of Julie Garcia's background, you will undoubtedly join me in voting for Julie Garcia for Supreme Court. Dennis J. Tarantino, Esq. Queensbury, NY Paid advertisement

To the Editor, My name is Robert C. Dedrick, a former teacher and coach for 3 decades, and most recently the Supervisor for the Town of Ticonderoga. I am writing this letter to express my opinion on a candidate that is running for Supreme Court Justice for the 4th Judicial District in New York. That candidate is Julie Garcia. I worked very closely with Julie as the Town Supervisor in her capacity as Essex County District Attorney. I admired her work ethic and hold her in deepest regards. Let me tell you why. We in Ticonderoga were faced with a rash of young adults who were tragically killed in automobile accidents where drivers were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. We as a town recongnized the need to become active and joined a group called "Connecting Youth and Communities" We focused on the rishk factors and selected strategies to negate each rish factor identified. One of the partners we recruited was the District Attorney, Julie Garcia. She immediately recognized the importance of our mission nad committed herself and her resources. She was present at our meetings, attended our panel discussions for the public and was noticeably present at our vigil ceremonies. She worked hard for the residents of Essex County and was a major factor in helping eradicate the serious problems with drinking and drug use in our community. I believe her entire life has prepared her for this position. Let me elaborate. She is the daughter of a miner, raised in Witherbee, feet from the iron mines, graduated from high school, attended Siena college, and eventually received her degree from Albany Law. She was the first woman ever elected as Essex County District Attorney. She is the only candidate to prosecute cases in district, local, county and supreme court. She can claim that she has been both a prosecutor and a defense attorney. She has taken up the cause of clients in civil proceedings. With her life experiences I can unequivocally state that she cares deeply about the residents who live in the 4th Judicial District. I implore residents to vote for the a most qualified candidate. She is a person of the highest integrity, an experienced trial lawyer, who would do a tremendous job as justice of the entire district. Please vote for Julie Garcia for the position of Supreme Court Judge for the 4th Judicial District. Robert C. Dedrick Ticonderoga, NY Paid for by Robert C. Dedrick

“We are pleased to hold this open house so people from all over the region can see what can be done in retrofitting an old building with new technology — to boost efficiency, save taxpayer money and provide environmental benefits,”Leggett said. Unlike fossil fuels, the use of wood pellets, particularly if produced from dead trees, is considered carbon neutral when burned for a source of heat. Also, there is an ample supply of wood — a renewable resource — in the Adirondacks. In an invitation to government officials to attend the open house, Tara Donadio — Sustainability Planner and Clean Energy Communities Outreach Coordinator for the

www.suncommunitynews.com

planning commission — noted that New York State has thousands of older buildings which have steam heating systems. These furnaces are dependent on fossil fuels which are not renewable and add to the atmosphere’s carbon load. She also noted in her email to area officials that the installation in the Chester Municipal Center utilizes a thermal storage system to support its biomass steam boiler. The thermal storage system is a huge tank that holds condensed steam, maintained at a high temperature under pressure, so it can be returned into circulation as needed to provide heat quickly and efficiently, according to Leggett. Donadio also noted that open house event is to showcase the town’s investments in

high-efficiency LED lighting; its electricenergy generation via photo-voltaic solar arrays; and its community forest that environmentally offsets the use of wood used to heat the municipal center. The facility is located at 6307 state Route 9 just south of downtown Chestertown. Through its sustainability program, the regional planning commission helps communities in the Capital District deploy the objectives of the state Energy Research & Development Authority’s “Clean Energy Communities,” which include pursuing clean energy developments, saving energy costs, creating jobs, and improving the environment. Leggett said he was pleased that various regional agencies, including the Adirondack

North Country Association, were collaborating to hold the open house. “It’s great for our town to be recognized for the efforts undertaken by our town board and prior supervisor Fred Monroe in bringing this innovative technology to reality here in our community,” he said. Leggett also expressed appreciation to New York State Energy Research and Development Authority for contributing funds toward the project — and to Rick Handley & Associates for their role in engineering the wood pellet furnace and its thermal storage system. “Hopefully from our experience, others will be able to take advantage of high efficiency wood-pellet heating, which is now building our community’s resiliency.” ■

Burghers rack up yardage in 68-12 win over Coxsackie-Athens

Warrensburg-North Warren middle linebacker Tristen Hitchcock initiates a tackle on Chatham senior running back Quinten Kastner in the Burghers’ 8-7 victory over the Panthers on Oct. 11. This last Friday, Warrensburg defeated Coxsackie-Athens by a score of 68-12, as they head into post-season play. The Burghers, now 6-1 for 2019, are likely to meet up again with Chatham in the Section II tournament finals, as the two teams are the leaders in Class D. Photo by Danielle Parker

Griffin brothers share spotlight in late-season victory By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

COXSACKIE | Utilizing a potent, unrelenting running attack and a steely defense, the Warrensburg-North Warren football team thrashed Coxsackie-Athens Oct. 18 by a score of 68-12 in a victory that confirmed the Burghers’ top seed in Class D

Church

for the upcoming Section II tournament. Running back Jesse Griffin was nothing less than a scoring machine throughout the game, gaining 308 yards on 12 carries, resulting in three of the Burghers’ eight touchdowns. “Jesse Griffin was amazing — he may have set a school record,” coach Mike Perrone said of the senior. “Jesse has run so well in a lot of games this year, and he keeps getting better and better.” Senior quarterback Mac Baker also racked up impressive statistics when he kept the ball and charged downfield — he ran for 105 yards on eight plays and scored two touchdowns in the process. Perrone praised his playmaker.

“Baker ran very physically — he saw the cutbacks really well and took advantage of opportunities,” he said. “It was a lot of fun to watch.” The younger running backs added to the scoring. Freshmen Landon Olden and Tristen Hitchcock and sophomore Caiden Mosher each scored a touchdown, while rushing for 42, 19, and 5 yards respectively. “Olden showed a lot of speed,” Perrone said. “He outran everybody that was chasing him.” Clearing the path for the runners were the offensive linemen, executing their blocking assignments efficiently. The Burghers defense contained Coxsackie-Athens’ gains to merely 12 rushing yards on 23 carries. Perrone hailed his defense for containing Coxsackie’s offensive players — particularly their receivers, who he said are known to be “very, very fast.” In the spotlight were the Burgher defenders who broke through the Indians’ line and sacked their quarterback. Senior Jaron Griffin accounted for four-and-a-half of them, while seniors Zach Shambo and Joe Murdick, freshman Tristen Hitchcock, and junior Tanner Dunkley also took down Coxsackie’s playmaker. “Jaron accomplished a season’s worth of sacks in one game,” Perrone said, praising Jesse Griffin’s twin brother. “He had a great day pressuring Coxsackie’s quarterback.” Perrone substituted freely in the second half, giving his younger players valuable game time, and they performed well. Up next for the Burghers is a crossover showdown Saturday Oct. 26 with neighboring Class C competitor Lake George/ Hadley-Luzerne, a traditional rival that upset the Burghers early last season 28-12. The game is to be held at 7 p.m. on the Burghers’ home field. Perrone said his players were excited and ready for the challenge. A week later, Warrensburg-North Warren will meet up with Helderburg Valley — a.k.a. Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Duanesburg — in a Section II Class D tournament semifinal. The Burghers defeated this hybrid team 64-0 on Sept. 7 in a season opener. As of Oct. 16, the Burghers were ranked no. 8 among all Class D schools in the state, and they are likely move up in the list when new rankings are released by the New York State Sportswriters Association on Oct. 23. ■ For further information 518-696-5468. Warren County election officials have trained 190 election inspectors in this new digital voting verification system. During the Early Voting sessions this week at the county Board of Elections headquarters in Queensbury, a ballot customized to the citizen’s corresponding district will be determined by the tablet’s programming, and it will be prepared within seconds by from a digital printer nearby. During the general election, 92 of the tablets are to be employed, at least two present at each of the 21 polling sites across the county. During presidential election four per poll site are to be employed. On election day, each poll site will have an ample supply of preprinted ballots, one handed to each voter. Months ago, some county officials questioned whether the digital voter verification system was immune to hacking. At

that time as well as last week, both of the county’s election commissioners assured the system was indeed secure. At each poll site, the tablets will be wirelessly accessing a private, password-protected router connected to a secure, discrete server. The county’s Information Technology department oversees the program’s operation. Information is stored on secure servers that are not connected to the Internet. The system allows election commissioners to retrieve realtime information, including voter turnout on Election Day or during an early voting session. The system is expected to speed up the poll-site validation process. The total cost of the tablets and electronic pollbook software for Warren County was $88,134 — to provide more efficient validation for the county’s 42,316 active voters and 2,860 inactive voters as of Oct. 21.

Anyone who wants to see how the tablets work can come to the board of elections headquarters in the Human Services Building at the county Municipal Center campus in Queensbury.

‘EARLY VOTING’ HOURS SCHEDULED

Early voting in the Nov. 5 general election is to be held each day from Saturday Oct. 26 through Sunday Nov. 3 at the Warren County Board of Elections office, located on the third floor of the county Human Services building at 1340 state Route 9. All registered voters can vote early. These sessions are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 26 and Sunday Oct. 27, as well as on Saturday Nov. 2 and Sunday Nov. 3. The sessions will also be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 29, Thursday Oct. 31 and Friday Nov. 1. On Monday Oct. 28 and Wednesday Oct. 30, the early voting is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ■

Undefeated in league play, Warriors now eyeing deep post-season run By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | Despite a young roster, the 2019 Lake George Volleyball team is enjoying one of their very best seasons in recent history — they are undefeated at 13-0 as of Oct. 20, and sports observers expect them to enjoy a string of victories in the remainder of the regular schedule and during post-season play. Reflecting this confidence, the New York State Volleyball Coaches Association has ranked Lake George No. 2 in the state among Class C schools. This week, Lake George Coach Brittany Jones praised her players’ work ethic. “We have an extremely hardworking team, and our athletes are very dedicated to the sport,” Jones said. “The players know what they want and have their sights set on a Section II championship and beyond — and I’m here to help them get there.” Jones remarked that the team consists entirely of juniors and freshmen. “Often, I forget how young they are — several of them are 14 and 13 years old,” she said. “I’m proud of how far they’ve progressed as young kids.” Besides being highly competitive by nature and having good ball handling skills, the Warrior players communicate extremely well and they are savvy at anticipating each other’s moves, Jones said. Oct. 18, they proved their abilities by

defeating Argyle — state-ranked in Class D — in three sets, 25-12, 25-19, and 25-19. They also swept Argyle — likely their primary competitor for the 2019 Adirondack League title — in a trio of sets on Sept. 25. Early this week, the Warriors were enjoying a 12-0 league record. Jones praised the whole roster, but chose a few for additional comments. “Our front line, including junior Mikayla Duffy and freshman Ella Fox, have a pretty powerful hitting game. Fox, she said, is “extremely talented” for a first-year player at the middle position. The line is bookended on the outside by junior Jasmine Burke and her sister Maddie Burke, Jones continued. “Jasmine and Maddie provide a lot of our offense,” she said. “We don’t struggle in any position — all of our hitters have personal strengths that they bring to the team.” The team’s setter is junior Alli Zilm, who is running the offense for first time this year, Jones said. “Alli is doing a great job,” she said, noting that the junior is an extremely hard worker. The team’s libero, or dedicated defensive player is Cassie Wagemann, who is a tremendous asset to the team, the coach continued. “Cassie hustles all over the court and never lets the ball hit the floor,” Jones said, noting that during the Argyle game, Wageman kept a volley continuing for an “unbelievable” length of time. “At one point, she dove into a a back corner on the court to keep the ball in play — it was just unreal,” Jones said.

The 2019 Lake George High School Varsity Volleyball team — enjoying a 12-0 Adirondack League record as of Oct. 20 — includes (front row, left to right): Cassandra Wagemann, Alli Zilm, Mikayla Duffy, Jasmine Burke, (row 2): Megan Durkin, Madeline Burke, Ella Fox, Jaida Rose, (row 3): Shannon Starratt and Kendra Cameron. Photo provided This year, the Lake George volleyball team moved up from Class D to Class C. Last year, they were undefeated at 20-0 but were disqualified from post-season play because of a disputed game that Section II officials ruled was a bonafide game, pushing them over the 20-game season limit — a decision that dismayed players, parents, coaches and Warrior

fans, and made headlines sttewide.. Jones said her 2019 players weren’t focusing on the past, but were looking forward instead. “Some of the returning players have a passion that’s partially fueled by what happened in 2018, but they don’t dwell on it — they know that this is a new team and a new year,” she said. ■

DISTRICT ATTORNEY ELECTION

Warrensburg attorney John S. Hall is running for the office of District Attorney. See John on TV Channel 6 WRGB on Thursday, Oct. 29, 1959. He is fearless, quiet and qualified. John is a former farmer, laborer, school teacher, veteran and lawyer. He is running against incumbent Robert J. Nolan. (Note – John was my good friend and he taught me a lot about the law. He would have made an excellent District Attorney. Unfortunately he was beaten at voting time by Mr. Nolan, who was well respected and re-elected.)

WARRENSBURG NEWS WINNER

John Hall Jr., aged 9, of Athol, the son of Attorney John S. Hall Sr., won the Warrensburg News coloring contest. He is entitled to pick up his prize at Clayfield’s Department Store here in town, a gift certificate worth $2 in toys. Honorable mention went to nine year old Joyce Alger. Judges for the contest were Jack Binder, Ruth Selleck and Winston Hale. (Note – Today, in 2019, young John Hall is known as “his honor” Judge John Hall.)

VILLAGE LADY PASSES AWAY

Mrs. Bessie E. Shaw, 75, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1959 at Westmount Infirmary. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Bernice Cummings, of Warrensburg and a son, Benjamin Shaw of Nofolk, Vermont. Bearers were Howard E. Hull,

The annual rally of the Warrensburg Republican Party will be held Thursday, Oct. 29, 1959 at the Colonial Arms announced Chairman Lee Orton. Chief speaker will be District Attorney Robert Nolan. The Adirondack Pipe Band will parade from Don Stone’s garage to the Arms and will play a concert on the lawn of the hotel. Dr. Clinton E. Lawrence is running for the office of Coroner. The Warren Inn is selling spaghetti by the pail for $1 a bucket. At Andy’s & Bill’s Tavern, in North Warrensburg, there will be a Hallow’en party on Saturday night, Oct. 31, 1959 and there will be music by the Blen-Tones Trio. Car dealer Karl Duell Sr., and Beecher Baker flew to New York City on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 1959 to drive back two new 1960 Oldsmobiles. Bruce Buick has ten good running cars, ideal for hunting, for $195 each. Mark Bruce is on the floor 12 hours a day to give you the best deal in Northern New York. Merv Hadden, at his North Warrensburg Garage is where cars are bought and sold. He has a nifty1958 Pontiac V-8 black Chieftain 4-door, with only 8000 miles for sale with many others to choose from. Auto and truck mechanic Grant Eldridge is there on duty.

happy parents of a son born Saturday, Sept. 12, 1959 at the Glens Falls Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Baker, of Warrensburg, are the happy parents of a daughter born Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1959 at Glens Falls Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. John Potter Jr., of Warrensburg, are the happy parents of a daughter, born Oct. 22, 1959 at the Glens Falls Hospital. A chimney fire at the home of William Drake, in Marion Park, caused the town firemen to be called out. The new steel arch bridge over No. 9 Brook, on the Thurman, Athol County Road is nearly completed. The so-called Needham Bridge at the entrance of Athol has become so weak as to be unsafe for public use and travel and it was decided that it should be closed to all traffic for a period of three days. The bridge carries heavy loads and several school buses cross daily. At Grant’s Store, Glens Falls, a Royal Enfield No. 4 rifle is selling for $15.88 each with 303 caliber shells for 15 cents each or a box of 30 for only $3.77.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

In 2019 House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is fond of quoting forefather Benjamin Franklin in her speeches. Personally I prefer the words of Will Rogers who said, “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.” ■ — Readers are welcome to contact Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518-623-2210.

Towns, outdoor fans benefiting from new access to ADK gem By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER

NORTH HUDSON | When Cloudsplitter outfitters Ruth and Dave Olbert paddled a friend out to Boreas Ponds recently, the scenery brought her to tears. It is a view like few others in the park, sheets of blue water studded with lilypads and ringed by a fringe of dark evergreens and, beyond that, hills of hardwoods. Watching over the scene from on high are some of the High Peaks’ most stories massifs, including Marcy, Haystack and, most dramatically, Gothics, with its bone-white face. It’s a scene that became realistically accessible last month when the Department of Environmental Conservation opened an improved road to within a mile of the ponds. And it’s a scene that the towns of North Hudson and Newcomb hope will bring glory and commerce to the often-overlooked southern access to the big mountains. “The people who want to see this are going to multiply year after year,” said North Hudson Supervisor Stephanie DeZalia. NO MORE GUTTER CLEANING, OR YOUR MONEY BACK – GUARANTEED

Skylight, Marcy and Haystack mountains, among other peaks, are visible from Boreas Ponds.

DeZalia said she recently showed Boreas Ponds off to a group of friends, “city slickers” who were blown away at the sight. The ponds were easy to get to, and even without a boat, hikers are treated to a stellar view of the High Peaks from the dam. More peaks come into view from the water. “It’s one of the extraordinary views in the park,” said North Hudson Board Member Ron Moore. “You can get out there and breathe it all in. “It’s something that you have to see once and once you’ve seen it you have to see it again.” Boreas Ponds became immediate bucket-list material for Adirondack fans with its defacto

opening, and the parking lot — limited by design — has frequently been packed. It was possible to paddle Boreas before, but only with a four-mile carry from a parking lot located more or less at a midpoint on Gulf Brook Road. Access to the ponds was hotly debated after the state purchased the land, which for more than a century had been in the hands of a logging company formed shortly after the Civil War by Jeremiah and Daniel Finch, along with Samuel Pruyn. Some wanted to be able to drive all the way to the ponds, while wilderness advocates wanted visitors to have to hike the full

seven-mile length of Gulf Brook Road. Dave Olbert said he believes for the most part the state got it right. People who want to paddle Boreas still have to carry (or wheel) their boats for a mile from the parking lot, a challenging, but doable task. But the parking lot itself may be an issue because it is not meeting demand. “People have been parking creatively,” Ruth Olbert said. Businesses, meanwhile, are seeing an uptick with the added outdoors enthusiasts, and that will continue to grow, especially as the state adds trails to the area in an effort to pull hikers away from the overcrowded trailheads in Keene Valley. “The thing that will send people to this side is the chaos on the other side,” Ruth said. There would be other incentives too, particularly if the state cuts a new, shorter trail up Allen, which currently requires an 18-mile slog, making it perhaps the most notorious of all the 46 High Peaks. Ruth said she somewhat opposes a new trail, if only because “climbing Allen is such a badge.” She said there are other things the state could do to help as well, such as improved signage at the Essex Chain Lakes Complex, located south of Newcomb, which she said can be confusing and an impediment to greater use. “We’ve had several people turn around and come out” because the signs weren’t clear, she said. ■
