Area officials, citizens celebrate debut of new Chester Stewart’s Shop By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

WARREN COUNTY | While many hundreds of people were drawn to the new, far-larger Stewart’s Shop convenience store on Route 8 in Chester at its grand-opening event Nov. 8 for free ice cream and other promotions, area officials attending a ribbon-cutting ceremony focused on the generosity of the family-owned corporation, and how their stores enhance local communities. U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik and State Assemblyman Dan Stec both mentioned these themes as they spoke at the celebration. “In my Congressional district, I have 194 towns and villages, and Stewart’s Shops are the heartbeat of so many of these communities — they are so much more than a grocery store,” Stefanik said. “When I drive around my district, they’re like an oasis for me.”

While people were packing the new enlarged Chester Stewart’s Shop for its grand-opening celebration, area officials and community members gathered in front of the convenience store for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Holding up the ends of the ribbon are (left side, left to right): Glens Falls YMCA’s Brian Bearor, state Assemblyman Dan Stec and U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, and (left side) Chester town board member Karen DuRose — while store manager Vicky Tucker (center) prepares to cut the ribbon. Representatives of the North Warren Chamber of Commerce and the Tri-Lakes Community Alliance were also on hand.

LAKE GEORGE | Working at her office desk Nov. 7, Lake George Town Assessor Lori Barber heard her computer bleep, signaling that an email had arrived in her inbox. Her face lighting up with a broad smile, Barber turned to Sandy Cocozza-Spellburg. “Albany Med’s transplant immunology department just received the final test results, which show total compatibility — the final cross-match is complete, it’s perfect — so it’s a ‘go.’” Sandy grinned. “This is so good — it’s scary but it’s exciting because it’s such a heroic thing for you to do,” she said. Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked at Barber. “I believe you were meant to be

Stec said that while supermarkets were moving out of small towns in upstate New York, Stewart’s Shops were moving in or expanding their stores, fulfilling a vital need — giving residents a convenient place to obtain their day-to-day essentials, and providing travelers a respite from their road trips. “Stewart’s is such a great member of the community,” he said. “They’re generous, they’re supportive, they employ people with goodpaying jobs, they boost the economy. They’re a great corporate neighbor — they’ve been to generous to their host communities, and it’s

great to see them succeed as they have.” Stewart’s Shops’ generosity was evident at the ceremony, as their corporate officials presented checks for $1,000 to both the Glens Falls YMCA’s Adirondack Center and the North Warren Central School for the two entities’ outreach programs. Town of Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett said the new store was a great addition to the town. “Stewart’s is a great corporate partner here — what they give back to our communities is phenomenal, and were are very appreciative of it,” he said. who was celebrating his 28th wedding anniversary that very day, said he met his wife, Judy, three decades ago at the Chester Stewart’s when he stopped off on a trip north from Saratoga Springs, and she was behind the counter and served him some ice cream. “She smiled, and I assumed that she thought I was cute or something, but it was great customer service — and here we are 28 years later.” he said, gesturing to Judy, standing nearby, costumed as Stewart’s Shops’ iconic cow mascot. “Stewart’s is an anchor in our community, a place where people gather and congregate,” Simpson added.

Maxwell Spitzer of Stewart’s Shops said the new Chester store was part of the chain’s $50 million investment for 2019 including 12 overhauled or expanded stores, and three new shops — and that Stewart’s has 26 more construction projects planned for next year. Stewart’s District Manager Damian Kloss, who grew up in Riverbank and graduated from Warrensburg High School, looked over the crowd jamming the spacious new Chester store for its grand opening. “I’m very happy to see this expansion, and we’ve had a great welcoming here today,” he said. ■

L.G. youngster awarded by fire department for escape plan By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | A second-grader at Lake George elementary School spent hours devising a detailed fire safety plan for her family, and for her diligence she was treated like a celebrity by her peers and area firefighters. In a fire prevention program conducted at the school by the Lake George Fire Department, elementary students were invited to draft an escape plan for their family. Colbie Vanderklish, 7, took the assignment quite seriously.

She drew a detailed map of escape routes from her house, drawing the floor plan of her house, first and second stories, with two exits from each bedroom, as was suggested. Her map included a designated spot where her family members could meet safely, away from the house. “Colbie really concentrated on it — she worked on it for hours after she got home,” her mother Stephanie Vanderklish said. Her entry and 27 others were reviewed by the firefighters, and Colbie’s was chosen as the best, because of how well it was plotted out, Lake George firefighter Howard MacDonald said. “Her plan was really detailed — and she drew it up on her own,” he said after presenting Colbie with a hat and a T-shirt bearing Lake George Fire Department logos. “This was an awesome day for Colbie.” As a reward for her work, area firefighters gave her a ride to and from school Nov. 6 in fire trucks — Lake George firefighters delivered her to school at 7:55 a.m. in one of their tanker trucks — and she was greeted by raucous cheers from about two dozen

of her peers as she arrived. That afternoon, North Queensbury fire personnel drove her home in one of their firetrucks. Firefighters escorting Colbie on the two rides include Garrett Ramsey, Doni Smith, Kevin and John Cocozza and Howard MacDonald of the Lake George Fire Department; and Frank DeNardo, Greg France and Larry Fischer of North Queensbury Fire Co.. ■

In Hague, incumbent town supervisor Edna Frasier retained her position with 192 votes, while challenger Joshua Patchett received 113. In Thurman, however, town supervisor Cynthia Hyde was defeated in her bid for re-election by former Thurman Deputy Supervisor Susan Shepler in a vote of 239 to 205. Election officials said this week that the voter turnout in Thurman and Johnsburg was relatively high compared to prior general elections held in non-presidential years. Both of these latter races dominated headlines over the past several months. In Thurman, a dozen or more local residents delved into war of words on Facebook over the competing candidates throughout the past several months. These figures and the successive totals in this article include the early voting ballots cast, but not the absentee ballots, which are to be counted beginning Nov. 19. Hogan won by a vote of 501 to 159, and Leggett prevailed 541 to 396. In the Chester town board race, newcomer Chris Aiken was tops with 608 votes, incumbent Mike Packer was re-elected with 585 votes, and challenger Bernard “Bernie” McCann received 396 votes. In Warrensburg, town planning board member Rich Larkin secured one of two open seats on the town board. Incumbent Donne-Lynn Winslow drew the most votes - 364, while Larkin received 325 and incumbent Linda Baker Marcella — who had achieved a wide variety of accomplishments for the town

during her tenure — received 303 votes, losing her re-election bid. Challenger Janet Tallman, a municipal engineer and planner, received 86 votes. In Lake George, incumbent town board member Marisa Muratori drew the most votes: her tally was 534. Following her was fellow board member Dan Hurley with 473 votes — enough to retain his seat — and challenger Sean Quirk trailing with 408. For the two contested Johnsburg town board seats, Eugene Arsenault was re-elected with 421 votes, but incumbent Peter Olesheski, who missed his party’s primary filing deadline, received 334 votes, losing his seat to Justin Gonyo, the former general manager of the Saratoga-North Creek Railway. Gonyo, who is now pursuing a career as a transportation consultant, received 390 votes. For the post of Johnsburg Highway Superintendent, Fred Comstock defeated Michael Denno by a vote of 449 to 177. Hitchcock, the incumbent, had decided not to run for reelection as he was campaigning for the town’s CEO post. In the three-way race for two Horicon town board seats, newcomer Peter Palmer led the results with 282 votes, followed by 277 votes for incumbent Sylvia Smith — who retains her seat — and challenger Patrick Farrell followed with 137 votes. In Thurman, Edward F. Brown finished first in the fight for two town board seats with 266 votes, and maple producer Randy Galusha netted 260. Following were Janet L. Wood with 222 votes and Kathy Templeton, a former Adirondack Journal correspondent, received 163 votes.

and that most all of them are of historic nature and appearance, and seven of them are listed on the National Historic Register of Historic Places, as well as the state Historic Register. The Parisi letter states, “It is clear to us that the building as proposed by Dollar General would violate the other characteristic of the Hamlet Mixed Use description for commercial use, namely ‘generally in converted homes or other structures compatible with adjacent neighborhoods.’” Also, the Dollar General store, which would routinely host tractor-trailer delivery trucks that would pull through the property and drive on Elm Street, is incompatible with the description of the zone as having a traditional “pedestrian-oriented mix” of uses. The letter points out that local residents, particularly children, walk along the streets daily to attend school as well as visit the town’s library. Also, the introductory paragraphs of the zoning ordoinance cites, as its specific objectives, the conservation and protection of the aesthetic and historic resources of the town, and to preserve the beauty and character of the Adirondack park setting to the benefit of the town of Warrensburg, its residents and visitors. Contacted Sunday, Steve Parisi said that preserving Warrensburg’s historic and residential character was vital for assuring not only the town’s quality of life, but its economic vitality. “If the town demonstrates it doesn’t care about preserving history and interpreting its laws correctly, we will become one long strip mall,” he said, noting that a town with a historic ambiance boosts population which in turn attracts new, compatible local businesses. Other rural towns have rallied to preserve their historic character, and they’ve thrived as a result, he said. Parisi said that such a focus on the town’s ambiance would not only attract new businesses, but help retain those already located in Warrensburg. “How many businesses have opened but

closed soon afterwards, leaving empty storefronts? Businesses won’t thrive in this town if our town leaders let it degenerate,” he said. On Oct. 1, about 80 local citizens attended a planning board meeting at which the Dollar General plans were presented, and all but two of the many people voicing opinions at the meeting expressed strong objections to the plans for various reasons, including the planned demolition of the 1870s-era Miles Thomas House, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Rich Larkin, a planning board member who last week was elected by local voters to the town board, said at the meeting that the Dollar General store plans were incompatible with the site that was selected. “This is an extremely historic district in our community, and everyone is concerned that we’ll be going from a historic district to a box-store zone,” he said. No one at the meeting voiced objections to the store being situated in Warrensburg — many suggested that the new store be built on one of the empty commercial lots farther north, several blocks away from the zone in question. This Hamlet Mixed Use zone encompasses dozens of the historic buildings and gracious residences on Main and Elm streets between the First Presbyterian Church, the renowned Floyd Bennett Bandstand as well as the Merrill-Magee Inn — all considered historically significant structures. Parisi said that his request for zoning code interpretation doesn’t specifically involve the Miles Thomas property, but it addresses the larger issue of the town’s present and future character, as well as prompting the town government to follow its own laws. Meanwhile, the engineer presenting initial plans at the October board meeting on behalf of the store developer, has delayed his second appearance before the planning board until the panel’s January meeting. However, some of the material associated with the developer’s plans might be discussed at the December meeting. ■

Burghers claim Section II Class D football championship By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

SCHUYLERVILLE | The intense focus of the Warrensburg-North Warren football team’s defense and the Burghers’ potent rushing offense were key elements in the squad’s 28-18 defeat of Chatham Nov. 9 to capture their second straight Section II Class D championship. Warrensburg-North Warren contained Chatham’s productive passing attack and aggressive, physical defense which had limited the Burghers to one touchdown in the two teams’ mid-season Oct. 11 showdown which the Burghers won 8-7.

on a 7-yard run in a drive that started off with Tristen Hitchcock’s fumble recovery. A few plays later, Zach Shambo intercepted the ball and Warrensburg was engineering another drive, which ended in a third Burgher touchdown on a well-placed pass from quarterback Mac Baker to Winchell. Jaron Griffin added two points on a conversion, and the score was 22-6.

Late in the Section II Class D Football Championship game Nov. 9, Warrensburg’s Tristen Hitchcock tackles running back Quinten Kastner of Chatham. The Burghers’ defense was crucial to their win, and Hitchcock tallied the most tackles in the hard-fought contest.”

60 points per game except against Chatham, retaliated with vengeance. Jesse Griffin caught a fourth-down pass, bringing the ball down to the nine-yard line. Two plays later, he took the ball to the three-yard line, and then Jaron Griffin powered through the middle to take the ball over the goal line. Soon after, the Panthers answered the touchdown with a 12-yard pass from Sitzer to Quinten Kastner. In their ensuing play, the Panthers recovered their onsides kick and moved the ball down to the 3-yard line with pass plays. But

attack with 139 yards on 25 carries, followed by his brother Jaron who ran for 68 yards and two touchdowns. Dylan Winchell followed with 64 yards and a touchdown. Baker tallied 18 yards on the ground. Winchell and Jesse Griffin each caught two passes each, gaining 36 yards and 15 yards respectively. “After my brother got cramps in his legs, other running backs stepped up — it was Warrensburg-brand football, straight downhill,” Jaron Griffin said of how his team rallied, prevailing in the final 15 minutes. Winchell echoed the point. “Our team stepped up and overcame adversity,” he said. “We’ve been doing it all season.” Jesse Griffin said he was happy to play most of the championship game, because in last year’s Sectional finals, he was carted off to a hospital with an injury. “I’m glad I was here for the whole game this time,” he said. “We overcame adversity and pulled through — after halftime, we knew it was our game.” Tristen Hitchcock lead the team on tackles, achieving five on his own and five others on assists. Zach Shambo, Jesse and Jaron Griffin, and senior Joe Murdick also lead the defense in tackles, followed by Jacob Clear, Baker, Anthony Girard, Andrew Beadnell, Tanner Dunkley, and

This last weekend’s victory was historic for both Warrensburg and North Warren — it was a thrill-packed conclusion for the latter school’s first season offering football, and it was Warrensburg’s first-ever back-to-back Sectional titles. While the Burgher offense was in high gear Saturday, their defense was relentless, accomplishing three turnovers — each of which was converted into a touchdown by the team’s determined offense. Seniors Zach Shambo and Jesse Griffin each snagged one interception, and Tristen Hitchcock recovered a football; and these plays were critical to the Burghers’ win. Midway in the first quarter, Warrensburg established an 8-0 lead on a 9-yard run by Dylan Winchell, nine plays after Jesse Griffin intercepted a pass in Burgher territory.

Photo by Thom Randall Chatham, however, never let down the pressure. In the third quarter, Chatham connected on several pass plays, and the last of this series ended with a controversial interference call that advanced the Panthers far downfield. With 7:50 on the clock, Sitzer kept the ball, ran 14 yards and jumped over a diving Warrensburg defender to score a touchdown. One minute into the fourth quarter, Warrensburg’s offense, which has averaged

Warrensburg shut them down on two plays — the latter was a fourth-and-goal which the Burghers quelled with tight coverage of the Panther receivers in the end zone, and a sacking of Sitzer by Jaron Griffin and his teammates. Warrensburg hung tough for the four minutes or so remaining in the game, controlling

Angelo Willette. The latter four were among the six athletes from North Warren, new to football, who savored this first-ever experience. In a debriefing following the game, Perrone praised his team for working hard for 60 or so practices this season, representing 224 hours of strenuous work. “No group deserves this championship more than you guys, you put your heart and soul into football for an entire year,” he said. Shambo deferred credit to his teammates when asked about his big defensive plays on Saturday.

Chatham retaliated two-thirds through the second quarter, as their receiver Jayshawn Williams caught a pass from Panthers quarterback Casey Sitzer by reaching over the shoulder of a Burgher defender in motion, stealing the ball to foil the interception— Williams didn’t slow down as he ran into the end zone to score a 63-yard Chatham touchdown, bringing the score to 8-6. Opinion

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

Their service shall never be forgotten

suncommunitynews.com/opinions

By Dan Alexander PUBLISHER

As we honored those who served in the military earlier this week on Veterans Day, we were reminded of a task not yet completed. Several years ago, The Sun joined with the New York Press Association and newspapers in a nationwide effort to support the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund “Wall of Faces” Program. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is dedicated to honoring and remembering every person whose name is inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Wall of Faces campaign is an effort to preserve the legacy of those who sacrificed all in Vietnam by finding a photo to go with each of the more than 58,000 names on The Wall. Since 2013, newspapers from around the country have participated in the effort with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Faces Project to find the missing photos of those listed on the WALL. When we joined the effort, only one state had found all its photos and more than 16,000 were missing. It looked like an impossible task at that time. Today, more than 40 states have found all their photos and there are only approximately 400 left to find. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is now asking every newspaper and newspaper organization to join the “Wall of Faces Program” to find the remaining missing photos to forever honor our heroes from Vietnam who gave their all for us. We encourage you to check out the website vvmf. org/Wall-of-Faces and share the link with others who might have information for one of the missing faces in an attempt to help bring the project to a successful completion. If you have any information we ask you to contact Latosha Adams, manager of online communications for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, at: 1235 South Clark St., Suite 910, Arlington, VA 22202; 202-765-3774 (phone); 202-330-0960 (fax); or ladams@vvmf.org. ■

Letters Pre-existing conditions

To the Editor: The Affordable Care Act, Republicans hate it and many Democrats don’t understand it! Republicans call it “Obama Care” because anything President Obama did was wrong in their eyes. The truth is before the Affordable Care Act Americans with “Pre-Existing Conditions” had to pay unbelievable premiums for Health Insurance. Both young and old had to pay these high premiums and companies like Mutual of Omaha, Travelers, Blue Shield and many others were making profits that were over the top. In my own case my wife and I after retiring found that because we had minor Pre-Existing Conditions, we had to pay upwards of $10,000.00 in premiums and each of us had a $5,000.00 deductible before the insurance kicked in! Many of our friends were in the same boat once they stopped working. Many worked for companies that paid for their Health Insurance and Unionized workers received — Dan Alexander is the publisher of theirs through their Unions Insurance and Pension Funds. the Sun Community News. Proud to call Olmstedville home

To the Editor: I enjoyed the recent edition (vol. 8, No. 3) of North Country Living Magazine published by Sun Community News and Printing. The article about It’s About Thyme Farm was well deserved recognition of a business and its owners who provide a unique-to-the-area shopping experience and give back so much to the community. I did, however, find insulting author Tim Rowland’s description of Olmstedville, where It’s About Thyme Farm, is located. Olmstedville, NY is not “a scattered collection of buildings deep in the Adirondack forest,” as described by the author, Olmstedville is the largest settlement in the town of Minerva. It has its own zip code and post office. It is home to Minerva Central School; The Owl at Twilight and Lil Nony’s, two seasonal restaurants; a fire and rescue station; Sullivan’s, a gas and grocery store; St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church; the Minerva Historical Society Museum; and nationally-known Hornbeck Boats and other small businesses. A scenic dam in Olmstedville provides a popular fishing, canoeing and kayaking spot on Minerva Stream. Olmstedville was home to New York State Assemblyman Wesley Barnes who sponsored the resolution creating the New York State Forest Preserve in 1885. It was also home to my grandfather, Francis Donnelly who, at the time of his death, was the longest continually serving town and county elected official in the United States having served as supervisor for 46 consecutive years. Finally, with State Route 28N running through town and with Olmstedville only 12 miles from exit 26 of I-87 and 10 miles from Gore Mountain Ski Center, it is not remarkable that people “somehow find their way to Olmstedville” nor is it “deep in the Adirondack forest.” Olmstedville is a special place everyone should visit and experience for themselves, and I am proud to call it home. — David McNally, Olmstedville ■

OLD BUILDING, SEEN IT ALL

The majestic stone building which stands on lower Main Street at the southern end of Warrensburg village has captured the imagination of artist Jack Binder just as it has that of old residents and passing tourists. It now houses the Francis Antique Shop but it is old as most of Mr. Carlucci’s objects d’art, having been built from Hackensack stone about a century ago. It is one of a half dozen stone buildings which, standing in this town, made Warrensburg unique among North Country villages. (Note – This beautiful old building has guarded the entrance of the village of Warrensburgh since the early days when it looked down upon a dirt road that stretched northward into the untamed wilderness. It was built from stone garnered from Hackensack Mountain which towered over the little hamlet below. Most of the wonderful stories that it could tell us about by-gone days, even before the town was formed on Feb 12, 1813, are lost to time but history does relate, according to historian John Hastings

PATH THROUGH THE WILDERNESS

In even earlier times there was an old block house of tradition, located near there in the “lower borough, built of logs,” which Dr. A.W. Holden, of Glens Falls, described as having “port- holes and fastenings sufficient for the purpose of protection against the ordinary Indian attack.” This was where fearful settlers had a look- out for possible Indian raids. This block house would have been located directly behind the stone building up on the hill on which today would have been the area at the very end of Rosalie Avenue. I have read that local volunteers armed to fight the Indians trained in this room in the stone building that would later become a ballroom. The very vestiges of this little fort vanished long before Warrensburgh history ever began.

FIRST OWNER OF NOTE

The first owner of this fine home, of record, was John Mixter, born in 1819, who became supervisor in 1870. He owned all that general area and had barns on his property across the street. He was only 72 years old when he died in 1891.

From KIDNEY DONATION » pg. 1

Four days later, doctors carved out one of Barber’s kidneys and transplanted it into Johnny — he’s not Barber’s brother, nephew or even a distant relative — he’s a co-worker, a laborer for the town of Lake George. According to Sandy’s post on the Facebook page “Go Johnny Go,” as of 5 p.m. Monday, the transplant was a success — Johnny and Barber were both recovering from the dual surgery.

FOR MANY YEARS, FACING AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE

Since Johnny was 8 he has been enduring IGA nephropathy, a syndrome that inhibits the ability of the kidneys to remove waste from his bloodstream. About two years ago, Johnny’s condition declined, but he wasn’t aware that he was seriously ill due to his IGA nephropathy, he recalled Nov. 7 in Lori’s office. Back in 2017, Johnny said, Barber may have saved his life — she had seen him at the town hall and had surmised that he was afflicted with something serious. “I had really high blood pressure, I had bad coloring and was vomiting — I thought I had the flu — but she urged me to go to the doctor,” he said. “I did go, and I found out I had full renal failure.” Since then, Johnny’s been on dialysis. In the last year or so, it has required four treatments a day, which he endures between his job tasks and his volunteer work as a Lake George firefighter, he said.

In 1870, according to former Town Historian Mabel Tucker, in the year that John became supervisor, Warrensburgh had 1,579 citizens, up from 956 people in 1820 and in 2010, at the last known census, 4,094 citizens are recorded to live here.

A FINE OLD LADY, DEAD AND GONE

Hannah March Mixter, 80 years old, died in 1903. She caught pneumonia and was dead in 48 hours. It is said that she was a woman “highly respected for her many virtues.” She had a little son, George W. Mixter who died Sept. 12, 1849 at 3 years, 1 month and 12 days. Another of her five children was Mary Mixter. In 1872 Mary married Emerson S. Crandall who was quite a catch. They lived in the beautiful white house next door north of today’s Warrensburgh Museum and Emerson owned the “Crandall Block,” the three story business block across the street which burned around 1926. They had three children, Minnie, Charles and an infant, who like Mary’s brother, George, didn’t make it. In 1881 James H. Mixter began the hardware business in this same building that was later used by his brother, F.R. Mixter, the transfer in business taking place in 1882. Once upon a time these people were

“Sometimes, I go out firefighting all night, and the next morning, I don’t feel so good,” he said. On Nov. 7, Barber expressed why she made the decision to donate one of her kidneys to Johnny. Barber is married and has two children, Grace, 12, and Dan, 14. Asked what inspired her to donate her kidney to a coworker, Barber shrugged. “Johnny’s worked for the town for three years, and during that time I watched him get really ill, and he’s a young kid — he’s been sick his whole life, since he was 8 years old,” she said. “He’s 24 years old and I’m 50 — he deserves a shot at life.” Lori resumed her contemplation. “My thought process was, ‘Let’s test and see if I’m a match.’ I didn’t think in a million years I would be a match, so go figure. Here we are, I’m a perfect match — I was amazed.” Over the past 15 months or so, Barber has undergone dozens of tests, all to determine whether she was healthy enough to donate a kidney — they all produced exemplary results. Donating a kidney has serious implications — as a person gets older, one of your kidneys might fail, and you’d need a healthy one to survive, Barber was undoubtedly warned. “That’s a huge consideration, obviously, because I think of my children,” she said. “But I also know I’m going to be 51 in December, but this kid hasn’t had a normal life since he was born, and I wanted to give him as close to a normal life as I have enjoyed.”

living, breathing human beings and where ever they are today, I am sure that they appreciate being mentioned this one last time.

A THIEF IN THE NIGHT

Best remembered in this fine old stone house was Francis Carlucci who owned the building not that many years ago. She and her husband sold beautiful, expensive antiques and jewelry. I remember the day, not that many years ago when she, a widow, in the middle of the night was tied up and robbed by burglars. It was quite a sensation at the time. Not long ago the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce inhabited the building and than they were gone. Today, when I drove by I saw a small sign in the window that said that antiques were sold there and the place was called “The Blacksmith Shop.” It seems that everything in life goes in circles. If that wonderful old building could talk, what wonderful stories it could surely tell! But, as the poet said, “the past is a bucket of ashes.” We can only hope that it makes it for another hundred years or more, if this tired old planet lasts that long. ■ — Readers are welcome to contact Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518-623-2210.

Barber gazed at family photos on her desk. “Are there particular risks involved? Absolutely. But the doctors say I’m in perfect health and I don’t anticipate anything happening to my remaining kidney,” Barber said. “If something does happen someday, because I’m a donor, I go to the top of the list to get a kidney.” Barber said that after reading materials provided by Albany Medical Center, and giving the prospective operation a lot of thought, she decided to go ahead with the kidney donation — and it took some time before she revealed her decision to her spouse. “I didn’t tell my husband for a while, and when I did tell him, it went over — well, you can imagine, okay? His first reaction, was like ‘What?’ But it’s all good now, a year and a half later,” she said. “My kids and family members think it’s wonderful, and so does my husband, but he’s a little — you know, concerned, obviously.” Sandy gazed at Barber and expressed her thoughts. “I can’t imagine a better person to donate. Lori’s my hero ... What an act of heroism. I feel very connected to Lori — like it was meant to be.” Earlier in the day Nov. 7, town employees held an impromptu send-off party for Johnny and Barber. Town Comptroller Jenn Farrell and others in the town office hosted it in the clerk’s office. Town board member Marisa Muratori, who attended the gathering, offered her thoughts Monday. “What can you say? Donating a kidney is one of the most selfless acts I can think of,” she said. “To give the gift of life to a co-worker is such an over-the-top humanitarian act.” ■

Wbg residents, local businesses urged to get into holiday spirit By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

WARRENSBURG | “Shop Small Saturday” in Warrensburg — a local holiday shopping initiative — is scheduled for Nov. 30, and businesses in town are urged to decorate the exterior of holiday lights in advance of the event. Residents of Warrensburg hamlet are also encouraged to decorate their homes soon, to add to the holiday cheer. This request was aired this week by Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce director Suzanne Tyler, who noted that a holiday decorating contest is to be held in the coming weeks. The deadline for entering the contest is Nov. 29 — other details of the contest have not yet been finalized, but they will be publicized next week, she said. A similar request for residents and

businesses to decorate with lights have been voiced by members of Warrensburgh Beautification, as well as Lisa Alexander, who last year organized an initiative to decorate local parks and other public spaces with dazzling lighting displays. “I’d love to see everyone decorate their houses and for the business owners to decorate their stores,” she said. She said that this year’s holiday lighting in Warrenburg, which included bedecking the Schroon River Bridge at the entrance to town, is likely to be more extensive than ever. Last year, substantial lighting displays were set up in Engle Park behind the Warrensburg Health Center and in Veterans Park as well as the Floyd Bennett Bandstand and the Riverside Park pavilion — and the holiday lighting attracted visitors from across the region to cruise through town and gaze

at the colorful arrays. Alexander noted that a new lighted treeshaped metal frame with sparkling red, white and blue lights has already been erected in Veterans Park — and this display is to be lit up nightly beginning on Nov. 20 or so — and that it had its debut on Veterans Day. She said that town employees Larry Crandall and Tracy Benoit are among the town employees setting up the holiday lighting displays in the parks. Alexander said that a recent initiative to raise money among local businesses to purchase a lighting display resembling Santa’s sleigh and reindeer has been very successful. She said this display is to be situated in Engle Park, adding that electric power service has been extended to the trees in Bruce Park, a triangular plot near Ashe’s Hotel. “Like last year, Warrensburg will be glowing with the holiday spirit,” she said. ■

NORTH CREEK | A band that has been praised for its original Americana/roots music — yet hails from southwestern Quebec — is to present a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek. The five-member group is fronted by Kevin Harvey, a blues singer backed up by four musicians/vocalists playing guitars, a double bass and drums, playing in a style that evokes the Deep South with tinges of folk, soul and jazz idioms. In a review of one of the band’s performances, Dan Kushner of City Newspaper of Rochester describes their performance as having a “warm, ‘easy listening’ vibe,” and that Harvey “had the crowd in the palm of his hand” as he relayed stories between songs. “Harvey’s voice has a homey, James Taylor-esque quality, but with a bit of an edge,” Kushner writes.

Music journalist Nate Dow of the blog “As Heard Here” said the Durham County Poets are “sonic shape-shifters of the first order.” Noting they group blends the influences of soul, country, gospel and New Orleans swing idioms with their blues renditions, Dow said they offer up their music “with skill, aplomb and pure honesty.” In reviewing the Durham County Poets’ third album “Grimshaw Road,” Rex Bartholomew of Blues Blast magazine said “Their sound is straight out of the South, with a definite hill country feel” praising their amalgam of the above genres as a “wonderful blend” that is “unique and very listenable.” Tickets to the concert are $20 at the door, or $15 in advance in limited quantities. Youth are admitted free of charge. For advance tickets, visit the Tannery Pond box office , call 518-251-2505 ext. 128 or go to the venue’s website at tannerypondcenter.org. This concert partially funded by town of Johnsburg Occupancy Tax receipts as well as the Glenn & Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation. ■

Indian Lake Community Development Corp. to hold meeting Comprehensive Plan ushers town toward a sustainable future INDIAN LAKE | The Indian Lake Community Development Corporation (ILCDC) Board of Directors will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Indian Lake Central School Cafeteria. Paul Cummings, Chazen Company Senior Planner, will be the guest speaker. Paul coordinated the Indian Lake Comprehensive Plan and will review its status during his “Comprehensive Plan

stakeholders in a collaborative design process. The focus of the project’s activities is the future of the “The Commons” (formerly known as the Townsend property). This project emerged out of the Indian Lake Comprehensive Plan, which was used to successfully leverage grant funding for the acquisition for The Commons, preliminary development projects and the planning process that is currently underway. The town purchased the 7.7-acre property with funds from the Dormitory Authority of New York. The current planning process is being funded by the New York Department of State with funds provided under Title 11 of the Environmental Protection Fund,

Update, Implementation and Special Projects” presentation. The ILCDC was involved in the creation of the Plan and continues to actively participate in implementation activities, as well. (The Plan represents Indian Lake’s efforts to foster a sustainable future by inspiring community pride, participation and increasing interest in living, visiting and doing business in the town of Indian Lake. A copy of the plan is available for review on the ILCDC website at ilcdc.wordpress.com.) This month, the Town Comprehensive Plan Advisor y Committee is working with the Chazen Company and Envision A rchitect s to engage residents a nd

which the town was awarded through the NYS Consolidated Funding Application Process. The Plan Advisory Committee will be hosting open house sessions for the public, during which participants will be encouraged to share their thoughts regarding how best to re-purpose The Commons. Detailed information about the proposed open house sessions is included ILCDC’s website (ilcdc.wordpress.com). Join the ILCDC during their Nov. 20 membership meeting to learn more about the Commons project and other Comprehensive Plan–related programs and activities. For more information about the meeting, contact ILCDC president, Brenda Valentine, at 518-648-5636. ■
