NORTH CREEK | Johnsburg’s designation as a federal Opportunity Zone is expected

to brighten the town’s long-term economic prospects, local officials said.

But individuals and enterprises have yet to take advantage of its provisions, Johnsburg Town Supervisor Andrea Hogan said last week.

“I’m very hopeful this federal designation will inspire people to take a closer look at Johnsburg. We offer a very high quality of life here,” she said. “If you can live and work in same community, it’s best for everyone.”

» Opp. zone Cont. from pg. 1 Opportunity Zones are intended to promote economic vitality in distress areas by encouraging investing in startup businesses within the zones that have potential for growth and the ability to export products or provide services internationally.

The program provides incentives by awarding tax breaks or exemptions to qualifying new investments in these businesses.

Johnsburg is believed to be the only designated Opportunity Zone in the Adirondacks. The nearest other such zone targets western portions of Glens Falls.

There are 514 statewide.

The designation was pursued and coordinated by EDC Warren County, and was secured through lobbying efforts of state Sen. Betty Little and State Assemblyman Dan Stec.

EDC Warren County, a publicly funded but non-governmental economic development corporation, published an update of Johnsburg’s status as an Opportunity Zone on Sept. 26.

The program has an auxiliary mission to boost workforce development and job training, as well as prompt the construction of affordable housing.

Inmate arrested for breaking order of protection

GLENS FALLS | Warren County Sheriffs arrested a Glens Falls man late last month for allegedly breaking a non-contact order of protection.

Joseph R. Fylipek, 38, was charged with one count of criminal contempt, a class A misdemeanor, and one count of aggravated family offense, a class D felony Oct. 23.

Fylipek is an inmate in the Warren County Correctional Facility. Corrections staff determined that he had made several telephone calls from the facility to another person in violation of a no-contact order of protection.

Fylipek was returned to the correctional facility following his arrest and is scheduled to appear in the in the Town of Queensbury Court on Nov. 19. ■

Rehabilitating or upgrading or developing property can be eligible for such tax breaks.

Such instances include Main Street businesses, new or re-purposed manufacturing facilities, Brownfield redevelopment, construction of entrepreneurship incubators, coworking spaces, hospitality and lodging enterprises, plus affordable workforce and general rental housing.

Hogan said the Opportunity Zone program was “outstanding” and had substantial potential in Johnsburg.

“It really provides a unique opportunity to invest in a rural setting,” she said, noting that most such zones have so far been awarded to economically depressed urban areas nationally.

She added that several main obstacles exist in boosting Johnsburg’s economic vitality — an available supply of trained workers — which is primarily due to lack of affordable but decent housing — and lack of broadband access in many areas of town.

additional new lodging near Gore Mountain, and workforce housing, were top priorities.

“My initial reaction is the Opportunity Zone and fits very well with the goals for Johnsburg and North Creek, focusing particularly on downtown,” he said. “We’re encouraged, but revitalization is going to take a community-wide effort.”

For decades, North Creek and Johnsburg have been the site of many ambitious projects, including those of Long Islandbased real estate developer Elliott Monter, who invested many millions of dollars into building the Copperfield Inn, the town’s retail mall, and developing a large, upscale resort-home wooded subdivision — because he loved Johnsburg, where during his youth he enjoyed his family’s summer vacations.

North Creek was also the focus of the Ed Ellis’ multi-million-dollar investment in the Saratoga-North Creek Railway, which made plenty of headlines through its half-dozen years before its recent demise, but never achieved sustainability.

But Hogan said she remains optimistic about Johnsburg, particularly after it was awarded the Opportunity Zone designation.

She said that news has spread about this newfound status, but it has yet to spur any particular development projects.

“We’ve had plenty of inquiries,” she said. “People are curious about the program.” ■

Man arrested after attempt to run SUV off road

CHESTER | A Chestertown man was arrested last week by Warren County Sheriffs for allegedly ramming a pickup truck repeatedly into a SUV to run it off the road.

Michael Hayes, 61, was arrested after the sheriffs responded to a report of an operator of a pickup truck repeatedly ramming a SUV at the intersection of Riverside Drive and State Route 9 in Chestertown on Nov. 8.

When patrols arrived, it was discovered that the event had started as a domestic incident between Hayes and a victim at his residence, continued down Landon Hill Road with Hayes making repeated attempts to force the victim’s SUV of the road and ultimately ended with Hayes running the SUV off the road and onto a curb, causing

the SUV to be disabled with the victim still inside.

Hayes then repeatedly rammed his 2011 Chevrolet Silverado into the occupied and disabled SUV. The victim was eventually able to exit the SUV via the passenger side door and run to safety. The victim was not injured.

Hayes left the scene before police arrived, but surrendered himself a short time later to sheriff’s patrol officers at the Warren County Sheriff’s Office Chestertown Station.

Hayes was charged with reckless endangerment in the first degree, a class D felony; criminal mischief in the second degree, a class D felony and menacing in the third degree, a class B misdemeanor.

Hayes was arraigned at the Town of Queensbury Court and released on his own recognizance to appear in the Town of Chester Court on Nov. 20.

A no-contact order of protection was issued

on behalf of the victim. ■

Rape leads to arrest

QUEENSBURY | A Queensbury man was arrested by Warren County Sheriffs last week for an alleged rape.

Ryan C. Blanchard, 24, was arrested Nov. 5 and charged with rape in the Ryan Blanchard third degree, a class E felony, Photo provided following a report from a female victim claiming that Blanchard performed sexual intercourse on her without her consent.

Blanchard was charged and arraigned at Queensbury Town Court at which time he was released on recognizance to appear at a later date. A no-contact order of protection was issued on behalf of the victim. ■

CHESTERTOWN | In a collective expression of hometown pride, about 140 or so people participated in the Veterans’ Day activities honoring service personnel of the towns of Chester and Horicon.

These patriotic events on Saturday included a parade, a service honoring veterans, a show featuring the talents of local youth, and the debut of the renovated American Legion Post 964 headquarters.

Marching in the parade up Main Street were area veterans and a color guard representing the American Legion and VFW Post 5513, as well as the local Legion Riders.

Boy and girl scout groups of various ages marched, along with members of the Pottersville, Horicon and Chester fire companies and their fire trucks.

Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett and Horicon Supervisor Matt Simpson also were in the procession, alongside several board members from each of their towns — joined

by Warren County Undersheriff Shawn Lamouree and a representative from the state VFW organization.

With light snow falling on the procession, the marchers proceeded to the Chester Municipal Center auditorium, where Legion Commander Joanne Ellsworth conducted a ceremony honoring soldiers who served in the nation’s various wars and conflicts.

North Warren High School students Caleb Morehouse and Jack Buckman, both Boys State participants, presented speeches about their experiences in the program.

Attention then focused on the completed renovation of the Legion’s headquarters adjacent to the municipal center.

Local VFW Commander Harry Brundage handed out certificates of appreciation to the enterprises and individuals who assisted in the renovation of the Legion Post — a project that included adding insulation, rebuilding interior walls with knotty pine paneling, installing new carpeting, and reconfiguring a bathroom to be accessible to those with mobility challenges.

During Veterans Day ceremonies held Nov. 10 in Chestertown, a color guard — consisting of American Legion Post 964 and VFW Post 5513 members — is introduced to a capacity crowd in the Chester Municipal Center.

The activities concluded with veterans and guests returning to the municipal center auditorium for a silent auction. bidding on about 60 gift baskets that included such wares as remote vehicle starters, movie DVDs, wine and notions.

The ceremonies ended with a USO-style show, emceed

by Wendy Waldron, featuring local youth performing patriotic tunes, skits and other routines. ■

An eloquent voice is silent; a great leader has departed. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 1917-1963, our martyred 35th president was murdered in Dallas, Texas on Nov. 22, 1963. It is a bleak day in American history.

GONE WITHOUT A TRACE

Captain Hugh A. Lavallee, an Air National Guard pilot, who was killed when his jet crashed into a mountain southwest of Stony Creek, Saturday, Nov. 16, 1963, was buried with military honors at Springfield, Massachusetts, his home town.

Captain Lavallee, a 29-year-old former Air Force pilot, was the victim of the air crash which happened during a low altitude flying mission over the Adirondacks. His F-86 fighter was traveling about 300 miles per hour at an altitude of 500 feet when it rammed into the side of Tenant Mountain.

An investigation team from Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, South Carolina was at the crash site, Nov. 20, 1963, gathering information and debris of the plane to determine cause of the crash.

Air Force officials said that Captain Lavallee was not able to eject from the craft. The plane furrowed a 200 foot path through the woods and struck a tree six foot in diameter. The jet disintegrated and burned leaving a wheel and small bits of metal scattered throughout a wide area.

Charles E. Hastings, the regular Republican candidate, won his bid for supervisor of the Town of Warrensburg, Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1963, by the narrow margin of 20 votes out of more than 1,300 votes cast.

He will take office in January 1964.

Mark Bruce, a Warrensburg business man making his first try for public office, got 665 votes to 685 cast for Hastings. An enrolled Republican, Bruce ran as an independent with Democratic endorsement.

Bruce carried the first and second election district, but the third gave him a narrow edge which he was unable to surmount in the total count.

EMERSON MANSION DODGES BLOW

Attorneys for the Emerson estate have offered the Warrensburg Town Board the opportunity to buy the historic Emerson homestead on the corner of Main Street and Emerson Avenue for $22,000.

The offer was made in a letter signed

by Gerald McPhillips, attorney, which was read to the town board by Almon Smith, town clerk.

The property has been mentioned as a possible site for the town hall for which the late Albert L. Emerson bequeathed $150,000.

Supervisor Lee Orton said the board would make no decision on the offer of the

Emerson homestead site until the property is surveyed to determine the exact area size.

Opposition to the proposal was voiced by one member of the board who said that in view of the fact it is assessed at $20,000, purchase of the lot would deprive the town of $1,200 a year in taxes.

(Note – Supervisor Lee Orton was a savvy administrator who, along with the town board and the Warrensburg citizens, was grateful for Albert Emerson’s generosity and know that this harebrained proposal would surely drive a stake in the dead man’s heart to see his family’s historic, time honored property bulldozed as such.

Fortunately today, this magnificent mansion is in the capable hands of Faithanne Buck, a lady who lovingly treats the property with the respect that this crowning showplace of the ”Queen Village” deserves.)

In an article published in the Warrensburgh News on Jan. 1, 1861, was information about an old book that was discovered in the possession of the Warrensburg Cemetery Association which listed in detail the original forty first residents and home owners of the village.

This information was written in beautiful penmanship. It was the very first record kept by the association.

The earliest settler was listed as William Bond who moved here in 1786 and settled on lot No. 1 near Bond’s Pond (now Echo Lake). He was followed the next year, in 1787, by Joseph Woodward.

Lake George ‘Lite Up the Village’ upcoming Attendees asked to donate new toys

LAKE GEORGE | Lake George Village will be host to the 21st annual “Lite Up the Village” on Saturday, Nov. 24 in Shepard Park.

Last year’s event attracted over 2,500 to the village keeping all the open merchants busy and drawing one of the largest crowds in the event’s history.

All events are free and begin at 3:30 p.m., rain or shine, with local duo Bobby Dick and Susie’s holiday show that includes the comedy and magic of the Mr. Twisty.

Thousands are expected to attend the array of live music, fireworks, children’s rides, refreshments and the second annual holiday fire truck parade.

Santa Claus will arrive on a float during

the parade featuring several fire companies competing for cash prizes with decorated apparatus, floats and marching units.

Local businesses will also be competing with their decorated floats.

Families are then invited to the village firehouse to meet Santa and enjoy a holiday concert by the Lake George Community Band. The awards ceremony for the parade takes place at the Lake George American Legion and includes refreshments for all entrants.

The park will be illuminated with fire pits.

Hot chocolate, freshly made cider donuts and other refreshments will be available.

Refreshments, pony rides and a fireworks show will take place after a countdown to illuminate over 3,500 light displays throughout the village.

Families are asked to bring a new toy to donate to the local Tri-County Marines’ for the “Toys for Girls and Boys” program. ■

STUDENTS DE-STRESS:

Johnsburg Central School (JCS) students in grades 7-9, participated in a game night hosted by the JCS Natural Helpers, a group voted by their peers as having a natural desire and ability to help others.

The group organized the event to combat student stress.

Students started the evening with a guided study hall where they had help in studying and completing homework followed by snacks from the JCS Teachers Association. Students learned mindful breathing techniques,and the evening concluded with school-wide games.

During the event, CycleADK participants moved gravel for the pathway, fixed weathered interpretive signs and clipped overgrowth from the side of the trail.

“It was a wonderful experience working on the pathway with the folks from CycleADK,” said Jim Tavares, president of the Speculator Chamber of Commerce. “It really gave me a chance to get to know some of the cyclists and to share stories about our town. I look forward to seeing them when they pass through again.”

NORTH CREEK | Cycle Adirondacks, the Adirondack Foundation and the Cloudsplitter Foundation have donated $5,045 to community generated projects in Speculator, Inlet and North Creek as part of its CycleADK Gives program.

Funded community improvements include a community trail in Speculator, construction of a public water fountain in Inlet and planning of native pollinators in North Creek.

Funds were awarded to the three communities for at serving as overnight hosts for CycleADK’s 2018 Ultimate Cycling Vacation over the summer.

Is there any common ground left?

The midterm elections still are not behind us completely as some key races are yet to be decided.

By Dan Alexander Several races are so • PUBLISHER • close, and the sides are so divided, both sides have turned to the legal system to assist in determining the final outcomes.

This election allowed both sides to claim important victories which should give each camp an opportunity to feel good about their effort and the support they received from the party loyalists.

It’s time to call it a tie and declare a truce.

Let’s see both parties turn the page on the past few years and show the nation they can govern in the divided government with the Democrats controlling the House and the Republicans controlling the Senate. The president has already signaled his willingness to work with Congress.

The election results should provide each party solid footing and a degree of confidence to seek common ground, to move some bipartisan legislation for the country to demonstrate both party’s ability to function before the 2020 national elections.

The question now is a simple one.

With an electorate so badly divided, can our government function in a bipartisan manner to prove the nation’s best interest takes priority, or will they squander the next two years with childish battles and petty name calling?

Should gridlock continue to stagnate Congress, and it becomes apparent that both sides seek nothing more than the obliteration of the other party, where does that leave the nation heading into the 2020 election?

Do we continue down a divided road, or are the voters forced to make a major decision when they realize the only solution to addressing the nation’s issues is to decisively elect one party over another?

Both parties have proven they will go to any extent, spend any amount of money, and promise anything to win an election but can they succeed at governing for the American people or only for the benefit of their party’s agenda?

The next two years will all boil down to how the parties choose to govern the nation’s business and how the national media chooses to report on how they view the contest with a thumb on or off the scale of fairness.

The nation as a whole could benefit from dialing back the rhetoric and the divisiveness, but only time will tell if we can find any common ground. ■

Voters unserved by health care discussion

The midterm elections, which saw Democrats win the House and Republicans expand their Senate majority, will govern the details underpinning health care for at least the next two years.

Eighty percent of Americans said in mid-October that health care was “extremely” or “very important” to their vote, according to Gallup.

It’s a bipartisan concern, with 87 percent of Democrats and 72 percent of Republicans flagging the issue.

But as the smoke clears — as the campaign signs come down and a shell-shocked public looks towards the holidays — we wonder if local voters were well served by the public discussion.

The past two years have been dramatic.

President Donald Trump campaigned on repealing the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, if elected in 2016.

House and Senate Republicans pledged to back him.

But despite a GOP-controlled government, the effort collapsed last summer.

Despite falling short, the president signed a series of executive orders designed to weaken the legislation, terminating subsidies for insurers and reducing federal spending to promote sign-ups on the insurance marketplaces.

The White House also gave their blessing to a coalition of GOP-led states who sued to overturn the law, and later approved new insurance rules (“skimpy plans”) that are not required to comply with Obamacare, leaving out coverage for prescription drugs, maternity care and pre-existing conditions.

Last year’s GOP-penned tax bill also eliminated the individual mandate requiring people to purchase insurance.

Republicans cheered the efforts as a return to broader choice and access.

To the Editor: There is no doubt that the North Country is known for the giving spirit of the people that live here.

It never ceases to amaze me how this community comes together for a common goal, even in the toughest of times.

Although there are many worthy causes to support in our area, there are few that affect the number and variety of that impacted by the annual United Way campaign.

Our local United Way supports 40 member agencies. These agencies are staples in our North Country community, ones that most of us could not imagine life in our area without.

But doctors and patient advocacy groups, as well as the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, contended the efforts will lead to an exodus of younger, healthier consumers from the marketplace, therefore increasing insurance costs for everyone else.

Discontent rose from a newly-activated grassroots, flooding Congress with phone calls and protests across New York’s 21st Congressional District.

Despite the tumult, health care costs continue to rise, negating the impact of raises for workers and increasing costs for employers and local governments, who must either cut services or hike taxes to shoulder the increases.

And still, medical care in the U.S. remains more expensive than in any other industrialized country.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro) won a third term last week, defeating Democrat Tedra Cobb and Green Party candidate Dr. Lynn Kahn.

What did we learn from this?

It’s hard to say.

But we feel as if voters were unserved by the prolonged debate.

Stefanik voted to repeal Obamacare.

But amid the controversy, she rebranded herself as one of the most forward-looking Republican lawmakers seeking to provide solutions to address a failing system.

Stefanik steered $7.8 billion in funding to rural health care centers nationwide, including those in the Adirondack Park, as well as authored the amendment suspending the medical device tax.

A single-payer system isn’t the answer, said the GOP lawmaker, calling such a system inefficient and wasteful.

Cobb relentlessly criticized Stefanik for her vote, which she said would have stripped 64,000 constituents in New York’s 21st

YMCA, Senior Citizens Council, Champlain Valley Family Center, Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center and hospice, to name just a few, rely on the support of the United Way to continue to provide their much needed services in our area.

This year, the United Way has a goal of $725,000 — a goal that can only be reached by all of us coming together as our North Country community always has.

A gift to the United Way does not have to be large in order to make a difference. If everyone gives just a little, it is amazing how quickly it all adds up. Find out if your employer does payroll deduction to the United Way — the easiest way to give over time.

But as the sun rises on a divided government in January, we have to ask ourselves if we’re better off than we were two years ago.

Ask yourself the following: • What are the pros and cons of a singlepayer health care system?

• Are those with pre-existing medical conditions in immediate jeopardy?

• What are the ramifications for health care if Congress continues to do nothing, and what does it mean for your wallet?

• What is Washington doing to lower prescription drug costs?

• And what are the prospects of employers banding together to purchase insurance across state lines?

Bonus state question: • How will the proposed New York Health Act effect myself or my business?

If you’re scratching your head on any of these, you’re in good company: The election cycle simply didn’t provide an opening to discuss these nuances in any meaningful detail.

With 2020 fast approaching, it’s unlikely these questions will be hashed out. But we shouldn’t let politicians off the hook, either. ■

Remember that every dollar brings us a step closer to providing services to all walks of life in our community.

We all know someone that has been touched by the United Way and its 40 member agencies. Let’s not let them down, let’s show everyone that even in the toughest of times, the generosity of the people of the North Country will always shine.

Offense taken at column

To the Editor: Dan Alexander’s recent rant, “What lies ahead,” was offensive to those of us that serve on the various local government boards.

He stated, “Aside from the fame, money, power and perks, you have to wonder why anyone would run for a local, state or national political office. Sadly, it must be an addiction to one of the vices mentioned above.”

For me, and for most of the other trustees, councilpersons and legislators that I know personally, we do these jobs in an effort to improve our communities and improve the lives of the residents, our friends.

Money? I figure I am being paid less than minimum wage based on the number of hours I devote to the Village of Saranac Lake.

Perks? Sure I have a key to the building so I can use their toilet if I am downtown on a Sunday when everything else is closed.

Fame? Do people walk up to me on the street and ask for my autograph? No! More likely to ask for help with an issue in the village.

Power? I’m just one of five people on a board.

Have zero supervisory authority over any village employee. Nope, not lots of power.

Apparently Alexander is not aware that there are very many good people up here in the North Country who wish to help their fellow residents.

Maybe he is over influenced by the few politicians who don’t live here, work here and who are afraid to walk on the street and talk to the people they represent.

Mr. Alexander, please do not paint us all with that same brush. Most of us are merely trying to do good.

Our recompense is not fame, money, power and perks, it is the satisfaction gained from helping our communities and our people.

Trump dishonors veterans

To the Editor: Since the founding of our nation, the men and women who make up our military have fought to protect our nation and way of life in the most horrific of circumstances.

Many have paid for their actions through their own death, loss of limbs, terrible disfigurement, disease, post traumatic stress, ruined marriages and even have been spat upon returning home.

Many who fought in the trenches of France during World War I suffered terribly. The weather was often horrendous, they were gassed, the trenches were often filled with mud, many times shelled 24 hours a day, rations were at times deplorable.

Nearly 120,000 died. Three-hundred twenty thousand were sick and wounded. Our allies, the British, lost 700,000. In 1914, the French lost an average of 2,200 per day while our neighbors to the north lost 61,000.

Yet, our president wasn’t up to walking shoulder to shoulder with other world leaders to honor the dead and wounded, nor was he willing to visit a U.S. military ceremony.

He gave lame excuses blaming it on the light drizzle or a helicopter’s inability to fly. Yet in contrast, the other world leaders had no problem meeting their obligations.

By not attending the cemetery or joining the other world leaders President Trump dishonored all who have served and are currently serving our nation. Clearly his saluting any serviceman or woman is an empty gesture.

There is no pride, love or care behind it. I hope he never returns to the North Country as the men and women of the 10th Mountain Division deserve far better as do all who serve our nation.

Digital press printing offered at Sun Community News & Printing Locals can utilize printer for professional jobs at low cost

ELIZABETHTOWN | Sun Community News & Printing has purchased a new digital press printer.

Installation was completed in October.

The Konica Minolta AccurioPress digital press printer was introduced in April of this year. Its print capabilities allow designers at Sun Community News & Printing to offer professional print quality items for organizations such as schools, churches, community organizations, hospitals, tourism organizations, other professional offices and local community members.

According to Dan Alexander Jr., this offers a local option when it comes to design and printing.

“Businesses and local community members will discover that our designers and the new digital printing press offers the ability to develop and produce any materials that they need,” Alexander said. “The result is much nicer than they could have achieved on their personal computer and copier and makes more sense if they need a larger quantity that isn’t feasible on a standard business copier.”

Individuals can contact Sun Community News & Printing to help design and print wedding invitations, graduation announcements and all other printed materials that may go along with family or organizational events.

The result is professional, quality printed materials at a much lower cost than offered at traditional advertising agencies. In addition, if those items need to be mailed or otherwise distributed to the local community, Sun Community News & Printing can also manage that process.

According to Brand and Marketing Manager Jane Hooper, many people may not realize all that Sun Community News & Printing offers.

“This organization has a long name, but it really does reflect its services. There is a ‘news’ aspect to the business and a ‘printing’ aspect.

“The news is gathered and then assembled into a traditional newspaper format by using the organization’s full-size printing press. The other

type of printing is reserved for items produced by graphic designers for local businesses and consumers. The graphic design and printing aspect of the business is incredibly convenient for local business and individuals, and it’s something in which the business really excels – unfortunately, it’s really one of our best-kept secrets,” Hooper said.

The new digital press is different than the type of printing press that produces the newspapers. Full-size printing presses are generally used for large quantities of printed items, such as newspapers, books or magazines. The new digital press printer is best suited for quantities under 4,000, and the turnaround time is very quick.

According to Ashley Alexander, general manager of the printing and sales department, Sun Community News & Printing is embracing and growing the graphic design aspect of the business.

“We have printed so many things for local businesses and have developed some really interesting items for local community members – everything from wedding invitations, yard signs, bumper stickers and paper megaphones to banners, giant signs and posters for high school sports championship games. I believe that people and organizations will continue to be pleasantly surprised by all that we are able to do.” ■

Rainy weather benefits plants after dry summer Just the other day, I heard someone complain about the weather.

Too dry, too hot, too wet, no snow, too much

By Rich Redman • COLUMNIST • snow, too windy, no breeze, simply just too much weather, none of it they liked of course. You just can’t please everyone at the same time.

The rain is coming down as I sit here, and it is a welcome sight. This past summer has been awfully dry.

Wells have dried up, ponds converted to dry holes, streams have been cut down to trickles, trout have died, crops have been weakened or reduced.

Wild apple trees seem to have taken a hit as well as oaks. Both apple and acorn production in my area are down. How this will affect the wildlife is yet to be seen.

Strange thing though, some crops like tomatoes and potatoes seemed to go nuts after the drought when we finally got a shot of rain.

My guess is that they were rebounding from drought stress, making up for lost time.

Every year, I collect acorns by the road side and usually I can pick 3 or 4 inches worth of a 5-gallon bucket.

This year, I couldn’t cover the bottom.

Good thing I went fishing for salmon in Pulaski though.

Out west of here, downwind from

Lake Ontario, they had an abundant crop of red oak acorns. I filled eight large coffee cups with acorns before I left, along with a shopping bag. Yes, I drink a lot of coffee, road trips demand it.

this past spring on the Ausable River turned out OK.

I collect the acorns to use as a seed source for my woodlot. As I walk through the woodlot, I plant them in places where they can get some sun. If I spot a young oak coming up from previous years planting, I try to eliminate any competing trees to allow sunlight to reach my young ones.

The red maples that we planted close to the river were stressed but made it through. Wilmington had just enough showers to keep them alive, not thriving, but alive. The road runoff supplied just enough moisture to keep them going.

Tree farming! You gotta take care of your crop! I had a good stash to plant in my woodlot this year.

All hunters should be doing this too! As they work their way through the woods, just drop a few acorns along the way and step them into the ground. You will be planting for the future. As I still hunt, I drop a few here and there to get the seed spread out throughout my woodlot. Squirrels and deer may get some, but that’s the way it goes, we all gotta live.

The one thing I noticed about the Salmon River’s riparian buffer was that it was loaded with red oaks. Oaks are strong trees that can withstand the ice pounding and shade the river very well. The river bottom is also a great deer hunting spot. The biggest advantage I see is that oaks are drought tolerant, so they can withstand another summer like we just had, hot and dry.

We lost some trees in extremely dry sites like the top of steep road side salty banks.

This fall, a group of us went back and supplemented the areas that took a hit.

In spring, we will be planting more. I hope to do this yearly on the Ausable, Boquet or any other trout stream where trees are needed.

Working with Trout Unlimited, the soil and water office and with watershed groups, we get our stock through the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Trees for Tribs Program.

Both potted and bare root stock are grown at the Saratoga Nursery.

It’s been a very good program. The young trees will turn to old trees in time, especially with nutrients and water.

The moist air is still bleeding from the sky, and like the words of the song, “Rain” by the Beatles, “When the rain comes, I don’t mind!”

The complainers will complain about everything no matter what it is. You just can’t please everyone at the same time, just like politics. ■

No visit is complete until visitors sample and purchase Indian Lake maple products and jams.

Visitors who check out the North Country Crafters will find a host of A-Z Adirondack homemade items. All of North Country Crafters’ proceeds are donated to Indian Lake charities.

INDIAN LAKE | “Made in the Adirondacks” is the theme for the 21st annual Indian Lake Country Christmas Tour (CCT) scheduled for Friday, Nov. 23 and Saturday, Nov. 24 in Indian Lake.

Christmas wreaths now available

WARRENSBURG | Adirondack balsam wreaths are being sold by members of Warrensburgh Beautification Inc. in time to decorate for the Christmas in Warrensburgh celebration and the holiday season.

According to organizers, the evergreen wreaths are guaranteed fresh, full and fragrant and decorated with locally harvested pinecones and a handcrafted red velvet bow.

The wreaths are available in two sizes, 12 and 16 inch frame diameters, and are sold for $12.50 and $15.

“Every year, our fi refighters look forward to serving the public,” Geraghty said. “Come one, come all!” ■

“We serve people all they want,” Geraghty said. “Also, they can eat a meal and then take home servings for family members.”

Trustees award 34 Pearsall Foundation grants Grant applications to re-open July 2019

JOHNSBURG | The Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation have rolled out their grant announcements this year.

Fully-funded projects include: • The Johnsburg Chapter of Imagination Library providing free books monthly to children under 5 years of age.

• Lake George Music Festival to purchase “Theatre Manager” software.

• Adirondack Research Consortium to support student scholar research programming.

• Adirondack Sky Center and Observatory to support an 8-week astronomy program for 10 to 12-year olds in spring and next fall.

• Adirondack Curriculum Project to support the annual Adirondack Day at the Wild Center in Tupper Lake.

• Johnsburg Fine Arts for continued funding of the North Creek Mosaic Wall.

• Tannery Pond Center, North Creek to underwrite artist fees of the Seagle Colony Children’s Opera, Trio Casals and MozART Group.

• Our Town Theatre Group to support amateur playwrights, directors and actors producing an evening of free

staged readings.

• Adirondack Park Institute in Newcomb to provide funding for the 2019 Huntington Summer Lecture Series and the lepidopterist-in-residence at the VIC. • Indian Lake Theatre to defer costs of artist fees for their 2019 Music on Main series.

• Stony Creek Free Library to support their new “Winter Paint and Sip” program.

• Snarky Aarvark Films to support the High Peaks segment of “Charles Evans Hughes and the Adirondacks.”

Trustees held this year’s annual meeting in Schroon Lake, where they met with nonprofits to discuss issues in the community

and how the Pearsall Foundation might help.

The trustees ultimately reviewed 47 grant applications, down from 61 the year before, and fully funded the requested amount for 26 of them and partially funded seven.

The next cycle of accepting grant applications will occur July 1, 2019 to Aug. 31, 2019.

The trustees have decided that future grant applications will only be accepted online. Not for profit organization desiring reminder notifications as to when the grant proposal window is re-opened should follow the Pearsall Foundation on Facebook.

Play to see U.S. debut by WCS students Warrensburg High to present familyfriendly drama

WARRENSBURG | While athletes at Warrensburg High School have recently been scoring “firsts” in their exploits, the Warrensburg Drama Club is also poised to do so too.

The Drama Club’s fall play, set for three performances in less than two weeks, is “Wendy & Peter Pan,” by Ella Hickson.

Warrensburg students are among the first to perform it in the U.S., according to production director Mikelean Allen.

“It is such an honor to be among the very first in the nation to perform it,” she said of the drama which was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Allen said that the play has three strong female characters and has more relevance to

contemporary human experiences than the familiar traditional version.

“I love this show and script,” she said.

“The story has all the favorite characters, but in a deeper, more realistic way. The story is just terrific — It deals with loss, love, healing and joy.”

The production is at 7 p.m. on each of four nights: Thursday Nov. 29, Friday Nov. 30 and Saturday Dec. 1 in the Warrensburg High School cafetorium. The latter two shows coincide with the annual Christmas in Warrensburgh festival.

Allen said the 26 students involved in the show have really been delving into their roles since early September. She added that several of the students have been coached on swordfighting by parent Justin Parker, who is choreographing the scenes with such skirmishes.

Allen said the play — the drama club’s 2015 fall junior production — is fully staged, with costumes, scenery, lighting and sound.

“This play is a good family show, and the kids are excited to present it,” she said. “It offers comedy, some tears and a lot of life lessons.” ■

Little, Stec cruise to re-election Lawmakers will return to a wholly Democraticcontrolled Albany

GLENS FALLS | Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury) was re-elected to a ninth term on Tuesday, easily beating back a challenge from Democrat Emily Martz, 63 to 34 percent.

Little secured 59,710 votes in the six-county district compared to 32,535 for Martz.

“You can’t do it alone,” Little told supporters at the Queensbury Hotel in Glens Falls on Tuesday, “and I’ve had a great team helping me out.”

Martz, of Saranac Lake, previously came in fourth in the Democratic primary contest for New York’s 21st Congressional District in June.

“Together, we showed that democracy and elected office should never be taken for granted,” said Martz in a statement.

“They are rights and privileges always worth fighting for.”

Martz fared the best in Clinton County, where she held losses to 18 points, while Little opened up a 39 point margin in Washington County.

Little’s re-election was a bright spot for the state GOP, who were dealt crushing losses statewide.

“We pulled out all the stops,” Little said. I’ve never taken anything for granted in my personal, professional or political life.”

State Assemblyman Dan Stec (R-114th-Queensbury) and state Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-115th-Chateaugay) were each re-elected after running unopposed.

Stec, who represents Essex, Warren and portions of Washington and Saratoga counties, secured 66.7 percent of the vote.

But 33 percent of the electorate indicated a preference for another candidate.

Katie Wilson, the ex-Working Families Party candidate for New York’s 21st Congressional District, was shuttled to the ballot as a placeholder after losing the Democratic primary to allow the party to give their ballot line to the eventual nominee, Tedra Cobb.

Wilson received 15.4 percent of the vote, or 7,084 votes, despite not campaigning for the seat and saying she would vote for Stec.

Eighteen percent of voters in that contest, or 8,176 people, left the ballot blank, according to unofficial returns from the state Board of Elections.

Jones received 73.6 percent of the vote in his bid for a second term, while 26 percent of voters left their ballots blank.

Despite the loss, Molinaro swept the North Country, winning all 12 counties in New York’s 21st Congressional District.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro) also won a third term, defeating Democratic candidate Tedra Cobb by 15 points.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York) easily won re-election, besting GOP opponent Chele Farley 66.5 to 33.5 percent. ■

Johnsburg tax levy hike of 11.6 percent pending

NORTH CREEK | The Town of Johnsburg’s 2019 preliminary budget calls for a 11.6 percent increase in the amount to be raised by taxes for the highway, general government, library and special district expenditures combined.

The budget was endorsed by the town board in a unanimous vote after a public hearing held Nov. 8.

At the meeting, the town leaders also unanimously approved a measure that enables adoption of a budget that exceed the state tax cap, if necessary, when it is finalized in about two weeks.

The appropriations for Johnsburg’s 2019 town-wide expenses are $4,457,438, reduced by $1,949,545 in revenues and minus $624,891 in unexpended 2018 balance, leaving $1,883,002 to be raised by taxes.

The amount of tax levy for 2019 allowable under the state tax cap, according to the town’s estimates, is $1,721,992 — or $34,339 more than the town budgeted for 2018.

One main reason for the increase was that last year’s town budget drew a relatively hefty sum of $736,762 from unexpended fund balance, and the town isn’t able to do so again without reducing their financial buffer below a fiscally responsible level.

This year’s use of unexpended fund balance is set at $624,891.

Another reason for the increase is a 3 percent hike in the salaries of all town workers, including the highway superintendent and the highway employees, town government staff, library employee staff, and the town clerk.

The town board members, however, will not be getting a raise, town Supervisor Andrea Hogan said.

“With the prevailing low unemployment and labor shortage, we need to make working for the town attractive enough — so we can retain the employees we’ve got,” she said.

Johnsburg highway appropriations are set at $3,632,010 or $252,810 more than last year — a 7 percent increase from last year.

Most of that increase is due to salary increases, but the expenses of replacement equipment and parts are expected to go up substantially because of the new tariffs on steel recently imposed by the federal government.

Simultaneously, revenues from sources other than property taxes are expected to decrease by $178,810, a decline of 8.2 percent. Part of this decrease is conservative view of sales tax receipts, as the county may be determining a new way next year of distributing sales tax revenue among its towns.

Also, there’s doubt over whether the state legislature will approve the renewal of the county-wide mortgage tax.

In this year’s regular session, the legislature has failed to re-endorse the county’s mortgage tax, so it is scheduled to expire

Dec. 30 without their affirmative vote.

Lack of renewal might decrease the town of Johnsburg’s revenue between $10,000 and $40,000, Hogan said.

“We are being conservative in estimating revenues,” she said.

Other financial pressures include employee benefits as well as a new level of insurance required on firefighters certified to battle indoor blazes, Hogan said.

“It’s another unfunded state mandate,” she said.

There is some good news in the 2019 budget, however. The estimated appropriation for the Johnsburg Emergency Squad is $564,938, down $48,923 from last year. This 8 percent decrease is due to last year’s accumulated debt due to several winters with stormy weather which prompted extra non-reimbursed ambulance runs to pick up injured Gore Mountain skiers and transport them to Glens Falls Hospital or elsewhere, Hogan said.

“My primary focus for budgeting this year was health and human safety, supporting the fire departments and emergency squad at comfortable levels,” she said.

Also, the spending plan adds $100,000 for paving, and boosts the highway equipment fund appropriation from 120,000 to $250,000 at town highway superintendent Dan Hitchcock’s request because a lot of the highway department’s equipment is aging and needs either repair or replacement.

The 2019 tax rate is expected to be $157.77

Hogan said that trimming budgetary requests was difficult work.

“This year, determining the budget was a real process with a lot of compromise,” she said. “But everybody in town government was helpful in trimming back.” ■

Despite the lopsided score, Warrensburg didn’t quit. Burgher junior back Mac Baker — the game-high ground-gainer with 157 total yards on 27 carries — scored on a 14-yard run with 3:54 left in the game. Fifty seconds later, Baker added another six points by scooping up a Viking fumble — and ran 23 yards into the end zone, to the raucous cheers of Burgher fans.

Baker had stepped into the role as lead rusher for his team after Jessie Griffin was sidelined a week earlier when his collarbone was broken during the Burghers’ Sectional championship victory over Hoosic Valley.

In Saturday’s regional game, Baker was named as Outstanding Offensive Player for Warrensburg, while senior quarterback Evan MacDuff — who grabbed an interception, recovered a fumble and was a leading tackler — was named Outstanding Defensive Player for the Burghers.

Warrensburg only had 18 players dressed for the game, while Moriah’s roster listed 33 players.

Warrensburg coach Mike Perrone praised Moriah’s performance and coaching, noting that Bougor, Blaise, Larrow and Sargent could compete in Class A. “We knew we had to limit them — Moriah has a lot of weapons and a lot of size up front,” he said. “They’ve got a well-coached program and they played great football today.”

The loss to Moriah, however, doesn’t diminish the Burghers’ outstanding accomplishments this year, Perrone continued. He said that both his upperclass athletes and younger players deserve credit for “putting Warrensburg football back on the map” in the last several years after a decade of losing season records.

“Our seniors have worked hard and served as role models,” he said. “And we had a lot of young kids who have been thrown into the fire this season, and they grew up so much in a year — the future of Burgher football is so bright!” ■

SCHUYLERVILLE | Solid execution of some big plays and savvy strategy were key to Moriah’s comeback 34-16 victory over Warrensburg in the Nov. 10 battle to earn a berth in the Final Four of the state Class D championship tournament.

Moriah is to face Haldane of Cold Spring, this Friday at Middletown in the state semifinal game.

For the first 19 minutes of the regional game, Warrensburg dominated, gaining 136 yards on 23 plays, while their defense stopped four of Moriah’s drives on downs — limiting the Vikings to 43 yards or so.

The Burghers’ dominance ended in the final three minutes of the half, however, shortly after Warrensburg freshman back Dylan Winchell caught a screen pass from senior quarterback Evan MacDuff and took it to the Moriah 10-yard line.

This is when the tide turned.

Warrensburg was moved back from the 10-yard-line by two successive penalties, and Moriah’s Jerin Sargent, a senior, snagged an interception.

A few plays afterwards, sophomore Viking running back Maddox Blaise ran 17 yards for the game’s first touchdown with 1:15 left in the half.

Moriah’s defense then held Warrensburg to a three-play possession, and Moriah took over on their own 30 yard line.

On the next play, Viking quarterback Jeff Strieble, a junior, connected with senior running back Dyllon Bougor on a short pass, and he charged 70 yards for touchdown with 26 seconds left in the half.

Moriah head coach Don Tesar said later that this latter play was the game’s turning point.

“I knew they’d be coming hard on the line of scrimmage and their defenders would drop deep, so we sent Dyllon in a screen up the middle, and with great blocks downfield he made a great cut and ran down the sidelines for a score,” Tesar said.

“He’s a power player,” the coach said about Bougor, who was named Outstanding Offensive Player of the game.

Beginning with these two turnaround plays, Moriah gained about 275 yards and scored their 34 points while

Warriors’ stellar season ends after 3-hour game Future is bright for Lake George girls soccer squad

MECHANICVILLE | The Lake George girls soccer team endured two hours of regulation playing time in their Section II semifinal game versus Schoharie — but the game wasn’t over yet.

Tied 2-2 with one goal each scored by Gabby Marchello and Sarah Kohls in a second-half Warrior comeback effort, the game initially went into overtime periods, then into a series of penalty kicks — first a round of five in which goals could be answered, then rounds of sudden death shots.

On the fourth of the second series, Schoharie accomplished a goal, ending the Warriors’ Sectional campaign.

Regardless of this heartbreaking loss in this three-hour battle, the girls had remarkable achievements this year, which ended with a win-loss tally of 15-1-3.

But numbers don’t tell the whole story.

The players were eminently skilled, disciplined in practice, focused in their work onfield — and had a remarkable camaraderie that fueled their athletic synergy in their game play, coach Steve Kohls said.

“The players had a fantastic year, he said.

“The girls got along great — bus rides were always entertaining. They struck a good mix between being serious when they needed to be, and having fun when they could.”

Their team chemistry and talent lead them to capture the 2018 Adirondack League Championship. Their accomplishments and abilities received statewide attention as the New York Sportswriters Association ranked them either

Kohls said that in June he will lose some very talented seniors — goaltender Sam jeckel; forward Rachel Jaeger; striker Sarah Kohls; forward Alena Goodman; midfielders Nicole Kingsley and Gabby Weidner; and defenders Madison Macdermid, Rowan Metivier and Lynnaya Preuss.

Coach Kohls said he’d miss these players in next year’s campaign.

“Some of these girls, I’ve coached off and on for nine years,” he said. “It’s tough to see them go.”

Five of these seniors were starters — so presumably six experienced key players will be returning next year, with a deep roster of athletes backing them up.
