Lake George ‘NORDIC FEST’ AT GORE school dinged MOUNTAIN THIS WEEKEND in state audit District failed to prove purchases made at fair price By Elizabeth Izzo STA FF W RITER
LAKE GEORGE | The state Comptroller’s Office chided the Lake George Central School District in an audit last month for failing to provide sufficient evidence that purchases made with tax dollars were competitively bid. The report also found procedures for seeking competitive bids hadn’t been developed and implemented. An audit conducted over a nearly two-year period showed that from 60 purchases reviewed totaling nearly $342,000, the district couldn’t prove that they had sought competition or received the best price for 47 percent of them, a requirement by law. “Because district officials did not seek competition or maintain sufficient evidence that competition was sought for purchases below bidding thresholds, they cannot be sure that goods and services were procured in the most prudent and economical manner in the best interest of taxpayers,” the audit reads. » LG audit Cont. on pg. 2

As temperatures plummet, blackouts rattle residents
By Pete DeMola EDITOR
LONG LAKE | Residents are smarting over a series of power outages that have disrupted life just as winter has sunk its fangs into the remote mountainous region. Long Lake residents spent much of Black Friday without power as temperatures plummeted to 18 degrees below zero. Local officials have attributed the blackouts to
technical problems at the New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) substation in Newcomb, which feeds that community alongside Indian Lake, Long Lake and Raquette Lake. A backup generator at the Harris Lake substation installed about three years ago is supposed to turn on when service is interrupted, said Newcomb Supervisor Robin DeLoria. “The generator isn’t working as it should,” DeLoria told The Sun. “We’re not happy. It’s been failing since day one.” But NYSEG disputes that claim, attributing the blackouts to trees falling on the National Grid-owned transmission line running from Old Forge. “These incidents had nothing to with the generators,” said Kevin Ortiz, a spokesman.
“It’s completely inaccurate — those generators were working as intended during outages over (Thanksgiving) weekend.” DeLoria said local officials will sit down with NYSEG soon for a meeting. In the meantime, the energy company says they will continue to probe the issue. “Given the recent outages, we are in the midst of conducting an analysis to see what to do fortify, engage and prevent outages,” Ortiz said. Long Lake Supervisor Clark Seaman agrees with DeLoria that the generator is the culprit, citing a burned-out coil switch at the substation. “It’s been an ongoing problem and people have been getting very frustrated,” said Seaman.
BIG LOSSES
Regardless of the cause, merchants want a solution. “I’m just frustrated,” said Vickie Sandiford, owner of the Adirondack Trading Post. Staying open without power was impossible on Black Friday because the building was freezing after being closed for the holiday, she said. “That was a big financial loss,” Sandiford said. “And staff lost because I sent them home.” The power went out again two days later. Like other small business owners, Sandiford doesn’t have a generator, which can be a costly investment. » Blackouts Cont. on pg. 2
