Betty Little announces retirement
Christmas in Warrensburgh draws crowd
Longtime state senator opts out of re-election
By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER
NEW YORK | New York state Republican Sen. Betty Little has announced that she will not be running for re-election in 2020, choosing not to run against five-year-long Clinton County treasurer and Democratic Senate runner Kimberly Davis. Little, an upstate New York native, started serving the 45th district in 2003 and has been serving in the senate for almost 20 years. See BETTY LITTLE » pg. 7

WARRENSBURG | Hundreds of people from near and far attended Christmas in Warrensburgh last weekend despite chilly weather and competing holiday festivals in the region. On Saturday Dec. 7, Warrensburg’s town hall was transformed into “Toyland,” and many dozens of children enjoyed craft ing wooden toys and holiday decordations including evergreen swags, ornaments and gingerbread houses. Santa held court outside, while others took pony prides and horse-drawn wagon excursions. Most all the activities were so popular, people were waiting in lines to participate. Holy Cross Episcopal Church’s parish hall was packed with people enjoying the annual quiche luncheon and their homemade desserts. Christmas in Warrensburgh founder/organizer Teresa Whalen praised the parishioners’ culinary abilities. “The ice cream parfaits and pumpkin cheesecake were heavenly,” she said. Boutiques were busy, particularly on Saturday. The Serendipity Spinners, including town board member Linda Marcella, demonstrated their wool-spinning talents at Riverside Gallery. Noted watercolorist Mary Frank was at work on her paintings at Miller Art & Frame. Joy Muller-McCoola demonstrated her techniques of wet-felting of unspun wool for clothing and home decor at Deadwood Mountain Trading Co.. The new feature of Christmas in Warrensburgh was one of the most popular — folksinger-songwriter Dan Berggren drew a standing-room-only crowd to Richards Library for a concert of his original songs that describe life in the Adirondacks. North Creek restaurant undergoes renovations NORTH CREEK | The popular family owned and operated sit-down breakfast place in the small town of North Creek, Marsha’s, recently underwent some renovation, inside and out. The restaurant installed a new door and windows, keeping up with the more modern, yet still North Country, look of the town. The restaurant was originally purchased and opened in 1997 by Marsha and Ed Sires, who ran the place until 2007, when it was passed down to family.
Marsha’s receives new, personally-touched bar By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER
“We had a big business then,” Marsha said about the restaurant. Being the only breakfast place in North Creek, it was the number one spot to get a nice meal or eggs or pancakes first thing in the morning. However, with the edition of Crissy’s and Cafe Sarah, Marsha’s has seen a decrease in customers in the off-season. That doesn’t mean it’s not still one of the best places to grab a bite after church or before hitting Gore Mountain to ski. See MARSHA’S » pg. 2
Santa to greet youngsters in Chestertown
CHESTERTOWN | For almost 50 years, the Chestertown Rotary Club has been delighting children during the holiday season by sponsoring a popular, treasured tradition — Santa’s visit to the town of Chester. Each year, hundreds of local children are interviewed individually by Santa. He talks with them about their Christmas wishes, addressing each one by their name — based on information Mrs. Claus has covertly obtained in advance.

This year’s event is set for Saturday Dec. 14 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the town of Chester Municipal Center, at 6307 U.S. Rte. 9. This 47th annual holiday event features a memorable gift for each child as well as a photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus. In recent years, the event has also included a serenade of Christmas music. Refreshments are provided for the crowd — Santa holds court for about three hours so he can spend time talking with the 250 or more children who show up. The Dec. 14 event includes a session for children to construct gingerbread houses, hosted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. upstairs in the town of Chester Library. Those who wish to witness Santa’s arrival via firetruck are urged to come to the municipal center at 9:50 a.m. or so. ■

there’s a better view of Main Street, where all the action takes place. The quaint restaurant serves a variety of food for both breakfast and lunch, and closes before dinner. “Breakfast is the most popular - I would say blueberry pancakes, home fires are really good,” Smith said. “For lunch, the ruben and turkey are my favorites. We cook all our meat here, with the exception of the ham.” Marsha’s is located at 268 Main St in North Creek and is open every day a week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. ■

The doors and windows were just part of the renovation Marsha’s went through to keep up appearances. The restaurant also replaced its long-standing indoor bar with a handmade pine one. “A friend of ours made the bar,” Lori Smith said, the daughter of Marsha and Ed. “It’s really nice.” Marsha’s has a dining area as well as the bar, with plenty of space to socialize with each other. Expressing their concerns
Speaking to the Warrensburg Zoning Board of Appeals Nov. 25, local citizen Steve Parisi asks the panel to define the legal attributes of the “Hamlet Mixed Use” zone in Warrensburg’s town zoning ordinance. Dozens of local citizens turned out for the meeting over concern that a dollar store would be situated in the middle of a historic district — and involve the demolition of a vintage Victorian house, detracting from the ambiance of the town as well as requiring semi-truck traffic to regularly travel down Elm Street, a residential venue. The ZBA tabled their response to Parisi’s questioning, and its chairman Mark Morey said such issues should be directed to the town Planning Board, but citizens pointed out that the Planning Board chair had told them recently to take up their concerns with the ZBA. The next meeting of the Warrensburg Planning Board, when the proposed Dollar General development is scheduled to be discussed, is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7. Photo by Thom Randall

‘Breakfast with Santa’ in Adirondack N.Y. features famed sleigh Charitable event includes free breakfast for children, donations to food pantry By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARREN COUNTY | A “Breakfast with Santa & Mrs. Claus” event is to be held Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Adirondack General Store, and all are invited to participate. To be held from 8 a.m. to 11 am., this event has both a prominent charitable aspect — and a connection to popular culture. This holiday breakfast on Dec. 21 is complimentary for children 10 and under, and is available for purchase by adults. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be holding court during the event in their sleigh — so children can share their Christmas wishes, and parents are encouraged to take photos of the memorable meetup. The sleigh is no run-of-the-mill antique — it is a vintage sleigh that was used in Mariah
Carey’s and Justin Bieber’s holiday music video “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” shot in Macy’s Department Store in Manhattan. Adirondack General Store co-proprietor Yvette Gallacchi said she plans to use the sleigh in upcoming years either for holiday sleigh rides or as an attraction in the store. The charitable aspect of the Breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus event is the request to those attending to bring along a donation of at least one non-perishable food item, to be forwarded to a local food pantry. Attendees can also make a cash donation, which will be matched by the Gallacchis, effectively doubling each cash donor’s generosity. During the off-season, the store — a mainstay in the hamlet of Adirondack for 164 years — is open Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sundays and Mondays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Yvette and her husband Joe together have owned and operate Saturday the store since April. They are not only offering an expanded selection of merchandise, but they are serving breakfast and lunch from Friday through Monday, and dinner on Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Their Saturday evening Prime Rib dinner is popular, Yvette Gallacchi said this week. ■

His audience often sang along with the choruses of his songs, Whalen said. “Dan struck a chord for many with his tales of growing up in Minerva, his love of the Adirondacks and his relationship with nature and our rich culture,” she said. “Singing along with Dan, we all felt so connected to this land through the vivid images he created with his lyrics and melodies.” Also, “Breakfast with Santa” at both the local Masonic lodge and Tommy Guns Pizzeria were quite popular. Local restaurants were really busy, as many offered specials during the holiday event. Saturday’s late-afternoon tree lighting featured Aaron Spoonhour playing “Oh Come All You Faithful” on trumpet, leading a group of carolers led by Regina Newell. Heather Spoonhour signed the speeches for the tree-lighting ceremony at the Floyd Bennett Memorial Bandstand for those who had hearing impairments. Braving the cold temperatures, the Warrensburg Elementary School Band played several holiday selections. “People really enjoyed all the traditional activities, as well as the historic charm of our town,” Whalen said. ■

North Creek holds annual Lights On! event Caroling, Santa, parades continue through weekend By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER
NORTH CREEK | The Town of North Creek held its 23rd annual three day Lights On! event the first weekend of December. The fun began on Friday, Dec. 6, with the Johnsburg Central School Pop Singers visited the Elderwood at North Creek nursing and rehabilitation center. The residents listened to the members of the Pop Singers sing a capella covers of classic Christmas carols. “The Pop Singers are a real hard working group of kids,” Johnsburg music teacher and leader of the Pop Singers Katy Cole said. “We always enjoy singing for the residents and love when they sing with us.” The community tree lighting followed on Main Street near the tracks. From there, attendees were invited to the Tannery Pond Community Center to celebrate the start of the season with sweets and other refreshments. Santa and Mrs. Claus were there to greet the children who knew what they
wanted for Christmas. The next day began with the Lights On! Holiday Parade - starting from the Johnsburg Firehouse and traveling down Main Street. EMT and fire trucks drove through the parade, followed by business floats, local groups and the Johnsburg Marching Band. “The parade was wonderful,” Cole said. “It was great to see the town come together and spread holiday cheer.” Both Saturday and Sunday, the Tannery Pond hosted the North Country Singers for their annual holiday concert. The Pop Singers and Johnsburg Jazz band joined the singers on Saturday, and on Sunday, Guiding Steps North Dancers and Newcomb Central School Bell Tree Ensemble were part of the holiday concert. The North Country Singers concert, led by Denise Conti, was free to all, but were accepting donations. “Monetary donations will be gratefully accepted to benefit the Adirondack Community Outreach Center and the North Country Singers,” the website says. Pop Singers have a number of events coming up - the closest being the Johnsburg’s singers and band concert on Jan. 16 at 7:00 p.m., free to the public. The two are also competing in the Heritage Music Festival in April. The competition will take place in Williamsburg, Virgina, and travel is being paid for with extensive funding. ■

Meeting on rail corridor’s future set for Tuesday in North Creek By Thom Randall
Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek, this “community conversation” on the rail bed’s future is to include county officials who will explain their preliminary decision to pursue “abandonment” of the railroad — which doesn’t necessarily preclude resumption of rail service if freight traffic is deemed feasible. Several weeks ago, the county’s Public Works Committee voted to pursue legal
CORRESPONDENT
NORTH CREEK | The future of Warren County’s rail corridor which extends through the towns of Stony Creek, Warrensburg, Thurman, Chester and Johnsburg will be the topic of a public meeting this week. To be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at
abandonment. At this meeting, county supervisors discussed how utilizing the corridor for a rail-trail, hosting hikers and bicyclists, would attract tens of thousands of visitors to northern Warren County and boost the local economy. This rail-trail, several people at the meeting said, would provide both visitors and local residents a “world class” experience traversing into pristine wilderness — and provide for pedestrians to access Tahawus,
which features remnants of mining and smelting operations that date back to the 1800s. Johnsburg Supervisor Andrea Hogan said the Community Conversation, sponsored by the Johnsburg Town Board, would be informative. “There’s a lot of apprehension over there the county is going, and a lot of misunderstanding about what legal abandonment realluy means, so this will be a meaningful meeting for many people,” she said. ■

Registration takes place at the Adirondack Hotel beginning at 11 a.m. (blood pressure check is mandatory). Individuals and teams are asked to donate $25 and submit completed fundraising packets in order to participate. These “Polar Plungers” actually seem to be enjoying themselves, but are the fish biting? Polar Plunge official seems to be wielding “Excalibur” as he attempts to free up some liquid H 2 O.

Whether it has been through legislation, or funding for so many different and important initiatives and projects, being in a position to help has been so rewarding.” Little’s news came shortly before her visit to the City of Plattsburgh on Dec. 5. She held a press conference at the Clinton County Government Center that afternoon to go into more depth on her decision. Working for veterans By Elise Stefanik
PUBLISHER
GUEST COLUMNIST
The Veterans Day we honored last month was a time to recognize and thank those who dedicate their lives to serving our great nation and protecting our unique freedoms. The North Country is home to more veterans than any other district in New York state; one of my main priorities in Congress is to work tirelessly to improve their lives and ensure they receive the best possible care, benefits, and recognition for their service. Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division, is an important part of our district as it remains critical to preserving a strong national security and contributes to the economic well-being of the community. Veteran constituents from all parts of the North Country have sacrificed so much for our freedoms, and it is my duty and privilege as their member of Congress to work as hard as I can to find ways to support them. I have been a proud and outspoken advocate for all of our veterans. It is essential that veterans have access to affordable, quality healthcare and benefits. So far this Congress, I had the opportunity to work to advance several

important bills that honor and protect veterans. I helped lead the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019, which restored benefits to veterans who served in the territorial seas of Vietnam and were exposed to Agent Orange, and was signed into law in June of this year. I was also proud to re-introduce the Vietnam Era Veterans Hepatitis C Testing Enhancement Act, which enhances the VA’s efforts to screen and diagnose thousands of veterans who were exposed to the virus during their service. I was given the opportunity to testify in front of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, where I told the story of North Country veteran Danny Kaifetz, who was exposed to the Hepatitis C while receiving necessary vaccinations. It was an honor to emphasize the need for comprehensive health screenings for our Vietnam-era service members and highlight the important community-based work taking place in our district. I have also been a strong supporter of solutions specifically designed for women veterans, the fastest growing veteran group. The VA has a long history of developing and providing state-ofthe-ar t prosthetic technolog y and rehabilitation services for veterans with amputations; however, this work was largely focused on developing prosthetics for men. I proudly co-sponsored a bill directing the Secretary of Veterans
Affairs to report to Congress on the availability of prosthetics for women veterans. I am also an original co-sponsor to the Servicewomen’s Health Transition Training Act of 2019, which encourages all branches of service to adopt a peer-led model to inform women military members preparing to separate from active duty service about the women’s health services available through the VA. Our brave and dedicated veterans and their families made significant sacrifices to protect our freedoms, both at home and abroad. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I am committed to securing a successful future for all our veterans and military families. My three district offices have been able to help recover $3.5 million in VA benefits to those who have served. I will continue to advocate for our veterans at the federal level and provide constant support for them and their families. Although we can never fully repay them for their selfless service, it is an honor and a privilege to work to ensure veterans’ post-service lives are as smooth and fulfilling as possible. ■ — This column has been abridged for print. Stefanik’s support for American- Sewer funding for Lake George To the Editor: made energy While I agree Warren County should contribute to the funding To the Editor: Elise Stefanik’s steadfast support for American-made energy is a big step in the right direction. Why should we pay more for foreign oil? We have the resources right here in our country to keep costs low, and Elise is working to cut burdensome regulations to allow us to tap into them. Elise is also working for energy efficiency to protect out environment and our Elise knows that solar, wind, and hydroelectric power is growing and helping fill the gaps in small communities throughout our region. Her work to expand the renewable energy tax credit demonstrates that commitment to keep our costs low and move us into the 21st century. Elise is doing more than anyone else to provide better, cleaner and more affordable energy for New York families. — David Souliere IV, Peru ■

By Dan Alexander I’ve been pretty fortunate in my lifetime. Blessed with good health, a strong, loving two-parent family growing up. They not only supported me but passed along many valuable life lessons including a strong religious faith and a solid work ethic. I was fortunate enough to find a wonderful partner, and parlay those gifts into a pretty good life… not perfect, but certainly better than some. Over the years, I’ve had the great fortune to be a part of the United Way Campaign. I’ve seen first hand what the United Way is all about and how valuable they are to our region. Charitable giving means different things to different people. Who among us wouldn’t give when we know the exact circumstances of the need? Who wouldn’t part with a few bucks a week if it meant a Life Flight Helicopter would come to the rescue of their family members or even themselves? Sadly some never recognize the impact a few dollars given each week can mean to someone else when they are in need. None of us ever know what’s around the corner, and there is nothing any of us wouldn’t do when we see the immediate need first-hand. Unfortunately, the need while present isn’t always right there on the surface visible to all. It’s buried in everyday life to those who suffered at the hand of misfortune. That’s where the Partner Agencies of the United Way step forward every day, dealing with both large and visible events as well as those private, behind the scenes family issues that affect so many across our region. Many of these volunteer agencies would cease to exist without voluntary contributions either through the United Way Campaign or outright donations by a generous public. Only through the United Way Campaign will your employer allow you to have a small payroll deduction taken each week that adds up to a significant dollar amount by year’s end. Only through the United Way Campaign can you join with other generous givers from around our three-county region to create a major giving source to support these hard-working non-profit agencies, so they can focus their energies on serving those in need and not on raising funds. On behalf of all the agencies and the many volunteers who generously donate their time, and most importantly, all those served by these wonderful agencies, thank you for your consideration in supporting this most worthwhile community campaign and for whatever you can contribute. ■

of the State Mandated sewer plant, I would say that the taxpayers would have been better served if Mayor Blais and the Village Board had followed the example of the Town Board and “just said NO!” “No” to the Governor and DEC unless full funding was provided. Who owns the Lake? The State of New York; not the Town, not the Village! Who spent $17 million on a glorified bathroom on I-87 just before exit 18? The governor calls it a “Tourist Welcoming Center.” Governor, what do you think the tourists are coming to see? I can tell you it’s Lake George, and I promise you they didn’t need a “Tourist Center.” A restroom was all that was necessary. Think about who puts most of the sewage through the plant: 3,500 residents, or the thousands of tourists who flock here! The Village should have stood its ground and told the DEC and Governor “You want it, you build it,” “We will operate it.” The excuse I heard was, “If we didn’t sign the contract to build now, they would have fined us.” So what? Tell them, “Sorry, we don’t have that money either.” What would the state do, close the lake? I don’t think so! — John Kearney, Lake George ■

By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST
HUNTER PERISHES IN POND
The body of 42 year old William O’Neil, of Troy, a supervisor of the Watervliet Arsenal, was recovered from an Essex County pond on Saturday, Nov. 7, 1959 about 24 hours after his small motorboat capsized with a party of hunters. It is felt that he drowned Friday night in a vain attempt to swim ashore at Goodknow Flow. Three other men on a nine-day hunting expedition were rescued by William Seymore, of Newcomb, after they managed to cling to the overturned hull.
WELL-KNOWN RESTAURANT BURNS
Flames believed caused by an electrical defect in a water pump threatened the Hitching Post Tavern on Thursday night, Dec. 24, 1959, after the owner’s son detected smoke coming from the rear of the noted restaurant, between Lake George and Luzerne. Sheriff Carl McCoy and others from the Sheriff’s department were there to assist in operations.
Toney scored 15 points for his team.
Two game protectors who claim they were run down by a 26 year old deerjacker, in an automobile, when they attempted to question him, have filed charges of assault against the Thurman man. A jury was drawn Monday night, Dec. 7, 1959, for the trial charging him with assault in the third degree. The man was released on $25 bail for his appearance on Dec. 7, 1959 in court.
HUNTER SCORES BIG
Robert “Butch” Stetson, son of William F. Stetson Sr, of Pottersville, shot a 180 pound black bear, on Nov. 8, 1959, when he was hunting on the back side of Gore Mountain. He plans to have his bear mounted. (Note – I can’t but wonder if this described stuffed bear still exists. Does anyone know?)
BASKETBALL STORIES OF YORE
The Warrensburg Central School toppled St. Mary’s, on Nov. 28, 1959, in a fast game of basketball. In the third quarter outstanding players Jack Toney and Rog Remington showed their style as Toney sent the Burgers into a tie by sinking two shots and connecting with his jump shot.
celebrated his 12th birthday on Oct. 30, 1959. Guests included Jerry Quintal, Jerry Wakeley, Peter Kline, Jackie Quintal, Murray DeMatties and Edward Fuller. Attorney John Hall, Sr, says “Many thanks to the 5,271 fine people from Thurman and Warrensburg who voted for me as district attorney at election time. Mark and Edna Bruce traveled to New York City on Sunday, Nov. 1, 1959 to attend the annual hotel show. While there they visited their daughter, Sandra, now Mrs. John Nelson. Miss Jean Ann Raymond, daughter of Lawrence Raymond, of Warrensburg and Ward B. Towers, of Corinth, were married by Pastor Roger Fitzgerald on Saturday, Oct. 3, 1959 in the First Methodist Church, Warrensburg. You are invited to subscribe to the Warrensburg News for $3 a year. SWEET AND SOUR NOTES
Twelve inches of heavy new snow promised ideal skiing for the New Year weekend. Hotels and motels in this area are booked for the New Year’s weekend to capacity. On Jan. 1, 1920 Hickory Hill, in Warrensburg, will open for the season. The new Stony Creek library building is in the process of being erected on the property recently donated by Edward Kreinheder of Warrensburg. A chimney fire at the home of William Drake, in Marion Park, caused the firemen to be called out. The Warren County Board of Supervisors appointed Dr. Felix Schrenk, of Chestertown as County Coroner to fill the unexpired term of Dr. Blaney Blodgett who resigned. Recently Mrs. Aubrey’s third grade class of Warrensburg Central School visited the Richard’s Library to be happily greeted there by Jennie Cameron, head librarian. Mrs. Myrtle Hull entertained at a spaghetti dinner in honor of her sons, James, who was 13 years old on Nov. 6, 1959 and Richard who

Burghers advance season tally to 4-0 By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARRENSBURG | With each player contributing, the Warrensburg Girls Basketball Team overcame a height differential to defeat Granville Dec. 6 by a score of 55-23. In this Adirondack League opener, no less than eight Burghers scored in the game, while each of the players also put forth a concerted effort on defense. After the game, Scott Smith remarked on the win. “I am very proud of the defensive effort showed by our team,” he said. “Although much smaller than Granville, we did a great job on the defensive end and didn’t let their forwards have a big game against us.” Senior point guard Hope Boland led all scorers with 15 points and four assists, and Abigail Ranous followed 13 points and three assists. Aubrey Ranous, a powerhouse at the rim, tallied her third straight double-double of 2019 with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Abigail and Aubrey, seniors, are twin sisters. Senior 6’0” center Tenisha Tyrell executed a key role in keeping the scoring gap wide. She finished with 8 points and guarded Granville’s leading scorer, Bailey Phillips, limiting her to five points. Warrensburg’s players hailed the return of guard Sara Langworthy, who averaged more than 11 points-per-game last year. Langworthy, also a diligent defender, missed the first three games of the season due to a severely sprained ankle. Smith said. “Our players got emotional with the return of Sara,” he said. “Although limited in minutes Friday night, it was great
having her back on the court, and her continued recovery will be vital as the season progresses.” Assisting the above players in scoring were Langworthy, Olivia Frazier and Audrey Steves, each tallying two points, and Kaylee Olden with one point. The Burghers started strong, amassing a 19-5 lead in the first quarter, expanding the advantage to 33-11 by halftime. A strong third quarter, ending at 52-13, prompted Scott to send in his younger players, who gained valuable experience. Freshman Jordan Barker came off the bench and executed 6 rebounds. With this win, Warrenburg advanced their record to 4-0 overall. After an away game against Corinth Dec. 9, Warrensburg is scheduled to face off with Fort Ann at 7 p.m. Friday Dec. 13 on the Burghers’ home court.
NORTH WARREN STRUGGLES VS. LOUDONVILLE CHRISTIAN
Burgher point guard Hope Boland drives around a defender in the Burghers’ 2018 Section II semifinal game against Cambridge, while her teammate Sara Langworthy (rear) observes. Boland, now a senior, was top scorer in a game Dec. 6 against Granville, during which the Burgher players hailed the return of Langworthy following an injury earlier this year.
The North Warren Girls Basketball team showed their ability to shoot from outside Dec. 4 as they started off their 2019 season with a 42-55 loss in a in a non-league game versus Loudonville Christian. North Warren’s slow start was a prime factor in their defeat. High scorer for the Cougars was Nicole Buckman with 15 points, followed by Jodi Bartlett with 14 points and Katie Kramer tallying 11 points. Bartlett scored two three-pointers against Loudonville’s aggressive inside defense, while Kramer and Buckman scored one each. Lauren Monroe contributed two points.

WARREN COUNTY | Exhibiting their depth of talent and resolve to win on Dec. 7, the North Warren Boys Basketball Team defeated AuSable Valley 63-49 at home. No less than seven North Warren athletes scored points in the game, and all of them were effective on defense. The outcome was a turnaround from last year, when the Cougars lost 50-54 in the Patriots, giving fans a taste of the season’s bright prospects. North Warren led the scoring by a modest margin in all four quarters. For Hartford, Gavon Darfler scored 20 points, Raymond Harrington scored 17 points, and his brother Brandon contributed 13. Burgher wrestlers take 2nd place in Saranac tourney Hitchcock, Hunter McKenna win weight-class titles By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
SARANAC | With 12 of their 15 wrestlers earning points, the Warrensburg-Bolton wrestling team placed second in the
annual Saranac Wrestling Tournament held Dec. 7, a few points behind Beaver River High School. The Burghers won the tourney last year, but coach Mark Trapasso said he was pleased nonetheless. Seven schools competed in the day-long event. “I’m happy with our team’s performance, considering we got a late start this year due to our football team’s run in Sectionals — but we still have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be,” he said. The Burghers had two champions: junior Hunter McKenna at 152 pounds who wrestled three matches for his trophy, and freshman Tristen Hitchcock who won five matches at 195 pounds for his first-place honors. Trapasso said Tristen was dominant all day long, and that Hunter McKenna is quite skilled and is an experienced team leader. In second place were eighth grader Zachary Olden at 99 pounds, sophomore Dylan Winchell at 126 pounds, senior Zach Shambo at 138 pounds, sophomore Caiden Mosher at 145 pounds, senior Joe Murdick at 170 pounds and senior Jacob Clear at 285 pounds. Trapasso said Olden, who weighs 93 pounds, is “a gritty, tough young kid who’s not afraid to go after people,” and
that Winchell has been wrestling for many years, winning a lot of matches over his career. Commenting on Shambo, Trapasso said, “He’s had a really great football career, and he’s bringing that same mentality to wrestling.” The coach characterized Mosher as a scrappy, gritty guy. INDIAN LAKE/LONG LAKE
Defense a key for Orange
INDIAN LAKE | Head coach Eric McCauliffe believes a defensive mindset will be key for the Indian Lake/Long Lake girls basketball team this season. “The team has a good blend of youth and experience with four seniors and four newcomers,” he said. “We should be strong defensively, especially if the younger players continue their early season growth. We will need a balanced attack on offense as we do not
have any one person who will be the primary scoring option. Our focus early has been playing together as a team on both ends of the floor.” McCauliffe said. Alex Campbell and Emily DeShaw w ill be the returning players that can lead us on offense and defense. “Both of them will be asked to play multiple positions and lead by
example,” he said. “Our girls should be competitive in every game they play this year, we have shown a lot of growth over the past two seasons and if that continues we will start winning more games.” Members of the Orange roster include Shelby Benton, Alex Campbell, Kristina Oliver, Callie Roberts, Kylie Cannan, Emily DeShaw, Jazmine Harris, Marilla Liddle, Anna Penrose and Kaitlyn Cannan. ■

NEWCOMB HUSKIES
235627
Huskies head into new year NEWCOMB | The Huskies are back, and head coach Dave Olbert hopes the team can improve on a five win season from a year ago when they were merged with Minerva. “We have 10 on the roster so when everyone attends practice is very productive,” said Olbert. “Much emphasis has been placed on work ethic and all the players are responding. We must spend about half of the practice on fundamentals and every day improvement is clear. Learning offensive systems of play and how to play effective zone and man to man defense has been another area of emphasis.” Olbert said the members of the team will each have roles to fill.
“Senior Ethan Armstrong is the most experienced varsity player and defi nitely our team leader,” he said. “Zachary Phelps and Alex Damesevitz both have two years experience at the varsity level and will be valuable contributors. Juniors Connor Davie and Elliot Vaughn with one year under their belt have demonstrated a considerable uptick in their game from last year. Sophomores Braydon Bush, Jordan Colon and Joshua Armstrong are transitioning from the modified level to the varsity seamlessly. International players Lam Tran (10th) and Alvaro Peralverez Santate (12th) have good basic skills and should see plenty of court time.” ■
Huskies build with freshmen, sophomores NEWCOMB| The huskies are being welcomed back to the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference this season with a very young core of players for the 2019-20 season. “Our team is young, consisting of entirely freshman and sophomores with no returning players,” said head coach Alex Ruzbacki. “Fundamentals of the game have been a focus of early practices. The one word I would use to describe our team would be tenacity. These girls are young but have tremendous drive and are great hustlers.”
Ruzbacki said the team will build off defense. “Defense will be a strength with guards Jana Gilbert I Robert and Lilly Vaughn making things difficult for opposing ball handlers and Reece Hlavaty will be one of the tallest girls in the league,” he said. “A strong and consistent defense will be a main goal for the season as well as continued growth as a team.” The Huskies roster includes Lilly Vaughn, Anigail Fifield, Emily Fifield, Reece Hlavaty, Laia Golocha Badenas, Alba Sevillano Lorido, Jana Gilbert Robert and Eadie Brannon. ■

JOHNSBURG | Coach Randy LaFountain said what the Johnsburg-Minerva varsity boys basketball team lacks in size will need to be made up with hustle in the 201920 season. “The team doesn’t have a lot of size, but will make up for with hustle and being scrappy,” said head coach Randy LaFountain. “We should have a balance scoring team, with five or six players contributing to the box score on a regular bases.” LaFountain said the team needs to improve overall shooting, and will spend the early season games to improve on our offense and defense. “Anthony Galle and Caleb Hughey will be team leaders on and off the court,” he said. LAKE GEORGE BOLTON LANDING WARRIORS EAGLES
Young Warriors team is working hard to meet expectations By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | The dominance of the Lake George Girls Basketball team stretches back decades, and last year’s team enjoyed its share of success, tallying a 19-3 winloss record overall — and winning the Adirondack League Championship. Graduating in June were a half-dozen stellar players, notably Gracann Bennett — who is attending Georgetown University on a full athletic scholarship — as well as Niki Hladik, Samantha Jeckel, Jade Baker, Rachel Green and Alysia Kane. Two players with varsity experience are returning: senior Ava Pushor —who played quality minutes last season off the bench averaging 4 points and 5 rebounds per game in 2018-19 — and junior Mikayla Duffy who averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds. The team roster consists of seven freshmen, two sophomores, one junior and four seniors. The team’s relative youth doesn’t worry
local fans — the 2019 Warriors volleyball team was exceptionally young, yet they fought their way to the state Final Four. Two players on this team, armed with the experience of top-tier competition, are on the 2019-20 basketball team: Duffy and freshman Madeline Burke. Coach Rob Tefft, who has for many years developed championship teams from rosters of rookies, said he and his assistant coaches will be busy teaching his young athletes the plays, strategies and techniques of varsity-level basketball. “They’re as young as spring grass, but they’re going to grow as grass does in the spring — getting better every day, ” he said. “We’ll reach our potential.” Tefft said he has faith the team will learn each day in practice and coalesce as a team. “The kids are working really hard, and I like where we are,’ he said. “The kids are doing great, and the season has a wonderful start — We look forward to the challenges of the season ahead.” ■

Warriors retool to tackle a new season’s challenges By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | Again this season, the Lake George Boys basketball team has a legacy of championships to live up to, as well as high expectations of fans. Through March 2018, their predecessors won three state championships in six years. Last season’s team went 26-1, ending up in the state Class C Final Four after winning the Class C Section II championship, a regional title and — without question — the Adirondack League championship. Lost from that team to graduation were players who were responsible for scoring 50 points per game: center Chris Becker, leading scorer and rebounder now making headlines at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Also graduated are Mason Flatley, a 1,000-point scorer and clutch player; Alex and Colin Leonelli, two dynamic guards; and Connor Vidnansky, a top percentage shooter and a strong versatile player. For this new season’s team, junior Luke
Pelchar is the only 2018-19 starter returning. He is expected to be a substantial force both inside and outside rebounding and scoring. Pelchar is joined by sophomore Cameron Orr, a sharpshooter and solid rebounder. Brothers Cole and Shane Clarke, a junior and senior respectively, are predicted to form an effective back line in the zone defense and add to the scoring, coach Blake White said, turning his attention to a talented senior back-court player. “Juan Garcia will likely serve as the point guard and will also add scoring punch with his exciting drives and shooting,” White added. Assisting the veteran Warrior coach this year is Lake George alumnus Andrew Zibro, a member of the 2012-13 state championship team. “The players have a close bond and are a joy to work with, the coach White continued, noting that the team’s goal is to capture the Adirondack League Championship and make a run into Sectional play, and perhaps advance to the states. “I am excited about this upcoming season,” White said. “The boys are working hard and they are all upbeat and positive.” ■
WarEagles seek to extend prior success By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

Photo by Thom Randall wrestlers are looking forward to a competitive year. “The WarEagles are reigning Class C Champions and hope to improve upon their past success,” Duers said, noting that the competition level in the practice room was “friendly but intense.” Duers said he expects quite a few of his wrestlers to go far this year. “We’re aiming to create state champions, and think there are a couple of them in the room here,” he said.
Young team, new coach in Bolton BOLTON LANDING | First year coach Cody Kober will take the held of the Bolton boys varsity basketball program this winter with a young roster which will look to improve throughout the season. “ We re ac he d t he Sectional Semifinals a year ago, but graduated a majority of our roster,” said Kober. “The team will look to seniors Kevin Neacy and Jaidyn Mignot for leadership and experience. Getting ready to compete in the two lower weight classes — where the WarEagles have in past years recorded forfeits — are two female wrestlers, Grace York and Mystic Potts, who will likely be winning points for their team. Jeff Varmette said the team has delved into their practice sessions with a lot of energy. “We have a young team, but they’re working very hard,” he said. “The spirit is there — our athletes are looking forward to the competition.” ■

junior duo Kate Van Auken and Maria Baker, who are both looking to break through the 1,000-point scoring plane in their junior seasons. “We have been very fortunate to maintain good health over the last three years,” Schweickert said. “We have a very dedicated group of coaches and players. Many of our players commit themselves in the off season playing for local AAU Teams including the La Chute
Kate Van Auken Shooters and Team Fredette.” Members of the Eagle roster include Haven Barney, Jane Trowbirdge, Jane Pfau, Skyler Scott, Sarah McGarr, Claire Schrader, Maria Baker, Kate Van Auken, Shaye Jennings, Kirsten Gollhofer and Alysha McGarr. ■

LAKE LUZERNE | For 2019-20, the Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George WarEagles wrestling team — reigning Class D champions — has both veteran leadership and younger developing talent. In June, a stellar group graduated from the 2018-19 WarEagles: New York State third-place wrestler Cody York — 43-1 in his senior year; state tournament qualifier Logan Duers; plus the talented Will Mitchum and Gary Spotswood. Counteracting this loss, a group of hard-working younger wrestlers are stepping up, led by seniors Mike Fuss and Colby Hoolihan as well as junior Justin Hoffman and sophomore Quinton Fox. The wrestlers under this mentorship include Logan Marissal, Carter McIntosh, Gavin McCabe and Caleb Carpenter, who are all viewed as post-season competitors along with the veterans who compiled a 4-1 Adirondack League record in 2018-19, ending up second in the league. Coaches Jeremy Duers and Jeff Varmette have taken over this year from Larry Rounds and Mike Varmette who mentored the team through recent years with remarkable success. Visiting a recent WarEagles practice, Duers and Jeff Varmette were enthusiastic about the 2019-20 team’s prospects. Duers said the team is “tough and driven” and the

Experienced, talented WCS wrestlers likely to dominate yet again By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARRENSBURG | Expectations are high for the 2019-20 Warrensburg Wrestling team, as their forerunners have amassed unprecedented success. For three consecutive years, the Burghers have won the “trifecta” of team championships: the Adirondack League Championship, the Section II Class D Championship and the Section II Division II Championship among 30-plus schools. Plus, for two years, their winning records qualified them to represent Section II in New York State’s high school wrestling team championship tournament. The wrestlers lost to graduation in June are the ultra-talented foursome of Nolan McNeill, Chris Wilson, Zack Davis and Dustin Reiter. However, a long list of veterans and determined younger wrestlers are returning, and area sports observers are expecting Warrensburg to prevail again. Top returners for 2019-20 are Hunter McKenna, Zachary Carpenter, Tanner McKenna, Dylan Winchell, Jacob Clear, Zach Shambo and Tristen Hitchcock. Observing the quick, aggressive moves of the talented crew working out last week in their concrete bunker of a practice room, it looks like Warrensburg will be very competitive and have yet another stellar year. The Burgher roster is deep and talented. They also work hard — as evidenced by the condensation streaming down those concrete walls for several hours each day. Head coach Mark Trapasso, with his assistants Scott McKenna, Lenny Baker Sr., and Brian Winchell — assisted by stellar Burgher alumni — were conducting rigorous practice

Burghers are ready to extend their streak of success By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARRENSBURG | Girls basketball has been on a multi-year winning streak at Warrensburg High, and this year’s team is likely to continue making history for the school. For two years in a row, the Burghers were runner-up Adirondack League Champions, and last season were Section II runners-up, losing only to the team that eventually won the state championship. From this talented 2018-19 team that enjoyed an admirable 20-3 overall record, four starters are returning. As of Dec. 5, the 2019-20 Burghers were 6-0, starting off their season with a tournament championship. The team is well-balanced, and their players have considerable talent. Senior point guard Hope Boland is a dynamic ball handler, having keen court vision — feeding the ball to the open player and shooting well from the outside as well as setting up clever plays. Senior Abigail Ranous is a scoring threat: last year she averaged 14.7 points per game due to her quickness — which gives her speed in transition — and her aids in her ability to charge to the rim. Abigail’s twin sister Aubrey is multi-talented
— she’s particularly aggressive on rebounding, defense, and forcing turnovers, as well as running the floor well on fast breaks. She’s chalked up some astounding statistics already for steals, blocks and rebounds as well as points so far in 2019-20. Junior Sara Langworthy averaged 8.7 points per game last year, hitting 29 threepointers over the season. She’s also a tough defender. Coach Scott Smith said she will be working more on the inside this year for both scoring and rebounding. Senior Tenisha Tyrell has made great strides this year in developing her offensive moves, and she and classmate Kaylee Olden will be definitely be contributing. Tenisha will be a key rebounder as well as an interior defender. Olden is versatile, and will be shooting and rebounding as well. Joining the Varsity team are newcomers Jordan Baker, Abby Cheney, Audrey Steves, Olivia Frazier and Ann Prosser ,who have shown they are ready to contribute — which is of vital importance, Smith said. Adirondack League play always presents tough challenges, and the Section II Class C is always ultra-competitive, he said. “We are very excited for the upcoming season,” he said. “The girls have been working extremely hard in practice, and the overall ‘vibe’ has been fantastic.” ■
have a solid core of returners and 25 kids on our roster, which is a great number to work with — But we can’t be complacent.” But Trapasso couldn’t suppress his optimism. “If we stay healthy, we will be ‘in the hunt’ at the end of the year,” he said. ■
Burghers aim to overcome lack of depth and inexperience By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARRENSBURG | The Burgher boys varsity basketball team has a daunting challenge ahead, as the entire roster lists only eight players, most all of them drafted this year from junior varsity. Lost to graduation in June were the talented crew of Evan MacDuff, Brandon Bailey, Dan Kelly, Peyton Olden, and Charlie Weick. But that’s not the only deficit the new team faces. Several players quit the 2019-20 team just days before the season started — but the remaining players soon afterwards demonstrated their resolve by winning the first game of the season. This lack of depth and inexperience doesn’t weigh heavily on the eight players who are looking forward to the season — nor does it dishearten coach Mike Perrone, who coached the Burghers football team to its second Section II victory this year.
“We have many roles to fill, but this should be a team that progresses throughout the season,” he said. “We’ll have a much different look, as we’ve been a post-play dominated team, and this now shifts to a more guard-dominated style. With their height, MacDuff and Bailey provided the inside power last year, and their team held its ground with an 8-12 overall record. This year, second-year sophomore shooting guard Dan Cunniffe, a junior, will be the go-to player. He’s joined in the back court by 8th graders Steve Schloss and Brady Cheney, as well as junior Wililam “Chippy” Mason. Up front are Junior Thomas O’Sulivan, seniors Mike Tyrell and Max Richards, and sophomore Thomas Sesselman. Cunniffe, Mason and O’Sullivan are cocaptains — and along with Schloss and Tyrell, they achieved admirable statistics in their win over Johnsburg. In addition, they were only two points shy of winning the George Khoury Tournament. Last week, they proved they could compete well with anyone, and fans expect they’ll be surprising their opponents all season long. ■

COUGARS
No. Warren basketball team is loaded with talent By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARREN COUNTY | New North Warren Boys Basketball coach James Cuyler has a formidable challenge: choosing which of his talented, versatile players should serve in the team’s starting lineup. Asked to identify his key players, Cuyler listed 13 players, detailing their abilities, and indication of their collective athleticism. Last year’s team was quite competitive, advancing to the Section II semifinals. Key players who graduated from that team were Jayson Hooper, Calab Morehouse, and Jack Buckman. But this year, the roster is really deep, boasting considerable attributes, including agility and athleticism, both on offense and defense, Cuyler said. “Our strengths are our height, length, quickness, ability to defend and to score quickly,” he said, noting that the team will be running the floor to keep opponents offrhythm. “We will be in teams’ faces, playing hard every minute.” The projected starting lineup consists of Anthony Girard — the acclaimed high-scoring junior point guard who can hit the basket from half court or nearly anywhere else; and
Tanner Dunkley, the stellar junior 6’4” center sportswriters have said is a “bruiser” inside. This duo lead the team last year in defeating Hartford and advance to the Sectional semis. The starting lineup also features senior guard Ryan Miller, who has a reliable shot and is a tough defender; senior forward Nate Hopper, who’s known for slashing to the basket and scoring; sophomore forward Andrew Beadnell, who can rebound, play solid defense and shoot from all over the court. Senior 6’3” guard Austin Bradley who drives inside well and has a solid shot, will likely serve as the sixth player. Sportswriters and fans are predicting this team will go far this year, partially because the athletes on the Cougar bench have talents comparable to that of their teammates on the floor. Without a doubt, they will also appear in this year’s sports reports. Cuyler said the players have been practicing hard and have been working out as well — not only on their strength but their explosive capabilities. He noted that several of the team’s key athletes were players on the Warrensburg-North Warren Football team that won the Section II Class D championship a month ago — and while they possess the toughness to claim such a title, their talented basketball teammates

“I think we will surprise a lot of people with the way we will play all season,” Cuyler said. “Our style will be fast-paced, running and pushing the ball as well as playing scrappy defense.” ■

Phelps, who is nearly recovered from an injury, is a guard who is a consistent scorer either inside or outside. Dugan is a forward, considered a clutch shooter who attacks the basket using either hand. The younger players include Buckman, a guard with unlimited range on her jump shot and handles the ball well; Buttino, a guard who is a solid rebounder, and has a considerable range on her jump shot; Dani Kersey, a forward who is deemed a very physical defender and rebounder inside; and Holly Perry, a junior guard who is a an aggressive defender who enjoys driving to the hoop as well. Hogan said his players are developing team chemistry well, blending their talents. “They are working to know each other’s game and be better every day,” he said, noting that the team is focusing on working on developing a controlled offense, cutting down on turnovers and setting up quality shots. ■ The 2019-20 North Warren High School Varsity Girls Basketball team includes (front row, left to right): Holly Perry, Lauren Monroe, Jodi Bartlett, (rear): Jasmina Brown, Dani Kersey, Nicole Buckman, and Kaitlyn Kramar. CHESTERTOWN | North Warren Girls Basketball has experienced a substantial revival the past several years. Three seasons ago, the team won the 2017 Class D Championship — the first such title for the girls program at the school in 37 years — and continued into the regional finals. Last year, that stellar team’s playmaker Sydney Gagnon, along with Jaclyn Urtz and Eliza Brown, led their 2018-19 squad to the Section II Class D finals. While Gagnon is now an acclaimed athlete at Hartwick College, seven of her teammates are returning for this year: seniors Lauren Monroe, Jodi Bartlett and Kali Dugan, juniors Kaitlyn Kramer, Emma Phelps and Dani Kersi, and sophomores Nicole Buckman and Tia Buttino. Monroe, the team’s point guard, is a tenacious defender with a good range for her jump shot. Bartlett, a forward, is a skilled rebounder who executes an array of inside moves. Kramar, also a forward, is a tough defender inside, who coach P.J. Hogan said “loves to attack the hoop off the dribble.” We Applaud All Of The Area Athletes
