OLMSTEDVILLE | For nearly 25 years, the schools at Minerva and Newcomb have shared student athletes in order to have enough players to fill out the roster in team sports. Separated by 22 mountainous miles, the relationship established a close bond between the communities among students, parents and fans. But at an emotional meeting last Tuesday in the Minerva gymnasium, a crowd of about 75 people was told by Minerva Superintendent Timothy Farrell that there’s a real possibility that the school will pull out of the Newcomb partnership and send its athletes to play sports at Johnsburg, which is both larger and closer. The reality, Farrell said, is that student populations and participation in sports at Minerva and Newcomb are declining, and even with the partnership, there will likely come a day when there aren’t enough kids to form a team. » Split decision Cont. on pg. 2

CHESTERTOWN | Loretta Prosser of Pottersville and Bruce Bartlett watched their 4-year-old child Jace Prosser talk to Santa about his Christmas wishes 20 minutes after the red-suited oversized elf was delivered to town offices via firetruck for his annual visit. Prosser and Bartlett were near the front of a long line snaking through the municipal center’s hallways — children, with their parents, waiting for a conversation with Santa. “This brings a lot of joy to the kids,” Loretta Prosser said, guessing that her son asked for a monster truck or a fourwheeler. “This gets everyone in the holiday spirit.” Bartlett said that as a child, he annually visited Santa, and it was great for the new generation to follow the tradition. “It lets people know there’s still goodwill in the world,” he said. “This event also gets people out to spend time with each other, sharing their thoughts and feelings.” Held Dec. 8, the local visit with Santa has been sponsored for 40-plus years by the Chestertown Rotary Club. Long-time club member Larry Hodgson watched the 100 or so children waiting patiently in line a half-hour after Santa’s arrival.

» Split decision Cont. from pg. 1 Framed this way, the gathering was told, it may be a choice between breaking up with Newcomb or losing team sports altogether. “The last five years have been a challenge,” Farrell said. “Population in the North Country is tough. Even in basketball we’ve struggled, (and) three-sport athletes are getting less and less common. By spring they’re worn out.” The special meeting of the school board — held in a gymnasium decorated with banners telling of past Minerva-Newcomb triumphs — was called by the Minerva Board of Education to gauge the community’s feelings on the proposal. But a handful of Newcomb residents who got wind of the meeting also attended, saying they felt blindsided and betrayed. “After so many years that it would come to this — it’s shocking to me,” said Newcomb School Board Member Nick Poulin. “This will leave Newcomb high and dry.” Some Minerva residents felt that, in looking out for their own self-interests, they were being asked to turn their backs on an old friend.

A crowd of about 75 people listen to a Minerva school board proposal to dissolve an athletic partnership with Newcomb and partner with Johnsburg instead. Photo by Tim Rowland “I don’t see us as Minerva, I see us as Minerva-Newcomb,” said one parent. “They’re small too; where do they go?” Other parents and fans worried that if they throw their lot with larger Johnsburg, Minerva kids would lose playing time or that Minerva would sacrifice its identity. But board member Danae Tucker said home games and practices would be shared, and that any partnership with Johnsburg would be a 50-50 proposition. “We’re not interested in being absorbed,” she said. Tucker said the board asked if Newcomb could be part of any new arrangement, but Johnsburg wasn’t interested because of the distance. And some parents agreed that sports with Johnsburg would better than no sports at all. “The numbers are going to continue to decline until no one has any sports,” said one father of four. “And if the sports program fails, I move.” Farrell said merged sports programs have to declare their intent in the spring, although he expects the board to make a any decision well in advance of the deadline so all three systems have time to adjust, should Minerva go with Johnsburg.

BROADER TRENDS

The conundrum of declining attendance and participation at rural schools is not peculiar to Minerva and Newcomb. The same issues are being wrestled with across the state, Farrell said. Pupil enrollment statewide is at its lowest level in 30 years, according to the non-partisan think tank the Empire Report. And just last week, voters in Elizabethtown-Lewis Central

&1~~~~g~·

and Westport Central decided to merge the districts, the first consolidation statewide since 2013. Some schools have experimented with co-ed teams, while schools with extra players sometimes offer to “loan” players to a school that is short. Neither is a particularly popular option. And at Minerva-Newcomb, the numbers are stark, and getting worse. Minerva has 94 students K-12, while Newcomb has 81 including 16 international students. Johnsburg has 339 students, but this includes pre-K, according to its website. Minerva has 20 kids enrolled in grades 10 through 12, and Newcomb has 34, although this includes international students who are proficient in soccer, but not in other American sports. “They try so hard, but it’s difficult to build a real team when you’ve got kids who have never picked up a basketball before,” said Minerva Board President Michael Corey. And while some fear Minerva athletes will lose playing time, others see benefits in the added competition. “It puts a little more on our kids to work harder to be good players,” Tucker said. The two schools share boys and girls basketball and soccer in the fall, and play boys baseball and girls softball in the spring. Kate Wimberly, a multi-sport varsity athlete at Minerva, acknowledged that it would be hard losing contact with friends that have been made at Newcomb. But she also said the 22-mile bus ride over the mountain can be tiring, and that as both schools lose players, the teams become less competitive. In the end, she said, “We just want to win some games.” ■

Peterson also recalled how LeCount had organized a Hawaiian luau at Sit ‘N Bull resort, featuring a synchronized swimming expo in the venue’s indoor swimming pool plus Peterson performing her Hawaiian show which was a long-time hit at The Tiki in Lake George. “The luau was a sellout in the middle of the winter,” Peterson said of the Chamber of Commerce fundraiser. “Jane was a firecracker — she was always thinking up things to boost the town.” Not long afterwards, LeCount organized a series of events in Warrensburg celebrating the 1980 Olympics coming to Lake Placid. Highlights were a parade through town featuring 15 or so floats and a concert by the U.S. Air Force Band at Warrensburg Central School. Parisi recalled how that parade included Warrensburg Central youth cross-country skiing through town. “Jane could make an event out of anything that came by,” he said. “She was always coming up with what could be done in our community.” Former area journalist Janet Marvel offered similar thoughts. “Jane worked for the Chamber with humor and great creativity, ‘get-up-and-go,’ imagination and enthusiasm, Marvel said.

“Jane was a mover and shaker — she was not content with things as they were,” he said. “Jane always put the town ahead of her own personal interest and she got everything accomplished in a positive direction.” Her most prominent accomplishment may have been co-founding and promoting Warrensburg’s “World’s Largest Garage Sale” which has drawn as many as 80,000 people to town annually for nearly 40 years.

LECOUNT CREDITED WITH WARRENSBURG’S REVIVAL

Kaena Peterson of both Warrensburg and Hawaii recalled how LeCount worked diligently in the 1970s and early 1980s to restore the economic and social vitality that Warrensburg possessed up through the 1940s. “Back in the late 1970s, people were moving out of Warrensburg, stores were closing down, and there were no new businesses coming to town: Warrensburg had hit rock-bottom,” Peterson said. “But Jane was determined to start its resurrection.” LeCount promoted hospitality seminars for workers in the tourist trade — despite many local people resenting out-of-towners, Peterson said.

The AJ/NE Sun | December 15, 2018 • 3

LECOUNT OFTEN REACHED OUT TO OTHERS

Teresa Whalen, co-founder of Warrensburgh Beautification, said LeCount was committed to enhancing the town. “Jane was a savvy businesswoman and a dedicated volunteer — and she was very helpful and supportive to people who moved to town,” Whalen said, adding that LeCount was named Warrensburg’s “Citizen of the Year” in 1982 for her many civic efforts. One of those people she aided was Sandi Parisi, now Warrensburg’s Town Historian. Decades ago, Jane welcomed newly-single Sandi into her home, where Sandi launched a craft shop named “Here Comes the Sun” alongside LeCount’s real estate enterprise. “Jane was a lot of fun, very generous, sweet, and funny,” Sandi Parisi said, adding that LeCount enthusiastically promoted Warrensburg through both its lean years and more prosperous times. “She was always willing to do anything for the town or to help others.”

MARRIED FOR 68 YEARS

Jane was born February 5, 1927, in Falmouth, Mass. to Richard and Carmen Martin. She graduated from Huntington High School on Long

Island and soon after, her passion for reading and writing lead to her employment at the book publisher G. P. Putnam’s Sons in New York City. Jane married Josiah A. LeCount in 1949 and their union lasted 68 years before Joe passed away in 2017. The couple had lived in Warrensburg since the 1970s. They are survived by their children Larry LeCount and Elizabeth LeCount McLaughlin of Warrensburg and Dorcas LeCount Conkling of Huntington Station. Their son Richard LeCount, a skilled auto body repairman active for decades in Warrensburg, died in 2007. Calling hours were held for Jane LeCount on Dec. 10 at Baker Funeral Home in Queensbury, and a funeral Mass was held the next day at Church of the Holy Cross in Warrensburg. Plans called for her burial and graveside service following at Gerald Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Contributions in LeCount’s memory may be made to Church of the Holy Cross, Countryside Adult Home, or to Warrensburgh Historical Society, P.O. Box 441, Warrensburg, NY 12885. ■ — This story has been abridged for print. To read this story in its entirety, visit suncommunitynews.com.

Town of Minerva under the tax cap New projects will be paid for with grant money By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

MINERVA | Minerva’s finances will come in a bit under the tax cap in 2019, according to the adopted town budget. The proposed 2019 tax levy will be $1.83 million, which is $258 beneath the cap. The budget counts on $96,500 from the unexpended

balance in the general fund, and a total of $246,500 from unexpended funds counting general, highway and special districts, according to budget documents. “We’ve maintained services and stayed within the cap,” said Supervisor Stephen McNally. This year’s total appropriations are $2.62 million for all funds, compared to $2.54 million in 2018. General fund tax rates will be up 1.43 percent, from $2.79 per $1,000 in assessed property value to $2.83 per thousand. Across all categories, including highway, fire, water and park and playground funds, the increase over 2018 will be 3.75 percent.

McNally said the town will continue to fund projects through grants rather than taxes. The town is currently putting the finishing touches on an $800,000 community center. This year the town anticipates an equestrian project, a pavilion at the beach and dam stabilization work, all done with grant money. “That way we don’t have to have tax increases to get projects done,” McNally said. ■

December remembrances By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST

OTHER TIMES, OTHER HAPPENINGS

Dec. 1, 1898 — Lake George was frozen, “from the head to the foot.” Dec. 8, 1887 — A baby girl, Fannie Auer (later Harris) was born on the Garnet Lake Road, Johnsburgh, to Charles and Elizabeth Reynolds Ingraham. She died in 1992 at the age of 105 years old. Dec. 11, 2007 — A new 60-seat, stainless steel diner, built in Atlanta, Georgia for Art Leonhard to replace the one that previously burned in south Lake George, was stopped by the weather somewhere in Pennsylvania on its way through seven states to be set up on the lot where the burned diner once sat on Route 9. The new diner sits there today. Dec. 16, 1773 — Samuel Adams led about 50 men dressed as Native Americans to board three ships and tossed 45 tons of tea into Boston Harbor, protesting taxes. Dec. 17, 1776 — Joseph Merritt, son of Ichabod and Sarah Wing Merritt, became the first child of white parents to be born on the town off Queensbury. His grandfather was early settler Nehemiah Merritt. Dec. 16, 1917 – It was 33 degrees below zero in Warrensburgh. On Dec. 30, 1917 it was 58 degrees below zero here.

REMEMBERING A TRAGIC MAN

It was just 159 years ago, Dec. 2, 1859, that militant abolitionist John Brown, 59

Church

years old, was loaded up in a wagon and carted out of prison and hanged by the neck on charges of treason. He was born in Connecticut, but in later years had a home in upstate New York. When I was about 16 years old, I visited his grave, located in the front yard of his small home just outside Lake Placid. Later, in my hometown of Rutland, Vermont I located the railroad siding where his body had once been stored in a boxcar for some considerable time when it was being transported from Charles Town, Virginia, after he was executed, on the way to his final resting place in New York. He wrote, “The crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but by blood.” Sixteen months after his death was the outbreak of the bloody Civil War.

STRANGE ENCOUNTER OF THE THIRD KIND

I was sad to read that Carson Parker, 80, a respected and admired citizen of Warrensburg, died on Nov. 17. Carson actually lived on Bakers Crossing Road, just over the bridge in Lake George, but I feel that Warrensburg always proudly counted him as one of her own. My sincere sympathy goes to Sharon Parker, Carson’s wife of 53 years. Carson Parker’s passing brought back a potent memory to me about an incident that happened many years ago, in which Carson was present although he was not actually knowingly involved. Before now, I have never confided this

Services

story to anyone because I felt that no one would believe me. The occurrence actually did make such an impression upon me that I never forgot it.

UNEARTHLY LIGHT IN THE SKY

Around 25 years ago, I attended the Warrensburg Memorial Day parade as I did every spring without fail. I watched the parade near Ashe’s Hotel, and with many other local citizens, I walked up the sidewalk to the north entrance of the old side of the cemetery to view the ceremony to be held there. The parade was ended when I got there, the fire company was parked and the American Legion was set up and ready for guest speakers. I was there in a crowd of about fifty local citizens, most of them with whom I was acquainted, to hear the speeches.

THE CEREMONY BEGAN

Carson Parker joined the Warrensburg American Legion Post No. 446 in 1993 and quickly became Post Commander in 1994. On that memorable day, actual year unknown, he stepped up to the microphone to be the first speaker to give a speech about the many good men who had given their lives for their country and the audience listened with interest and rapt attention. I stood in the rear of the little assembled group and for some unknown reason, I happened to look straight ahead northward and upward to view a blue and cloudless sky. I saw a shining, bright light moving very rapidly across the sky, very high up, traveling from east to west.

HOLDING MY BREATH

To my complete surprise, the object suddenly stopped. It didn’t slow up, it just stopped dead in the sky, sat there and suddenly started to intently blink for a minute or two. Then, with incredible speed, it started back east in the direction from whence it had just come. I looked around me to see if anyone else was seeing this unearthly sight, but everyone’s attention was on the words of the guest speakers. Suddenly, with a great burst of light, the object vanished, never to appear again to my amazed sight. After the speeches were given, I walked back down the sidewalk to my car near Ashe’s Hotel, wondering what in heaven’s name I had just seen. Whatever it was has been also reported over the years by hundreds of people around the world at some time or other and such sights can no longer be scoffed at. I feel that on that day, I did indeed see a UFO. I would like to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience. ■ - Readers are welcome to contact Adirondack Journal/Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518-623-2210.

WARRENSBURG | A workshop, organized by the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Warren County Cornell Cooperative Extension, on hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) will be held Dec. 15. The workshop will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the DEC Region Warrensburg Office at 232 Golf Course Rd. Charlotte Malmborg, a natural resources technician with the New York State Hemlock Initiative at Cornell University (NYSHI) will provide information on the importance of hemlock trees in northeastern forests, the threat presented by HWA and how landowners can identify and manage HWA infestations. Malmborg will also introduce NYSHI’s research of biological control opportunities and describe the role of NYSHI in promoting hemlock conservation in New York state. The workshop will move outside for a short period so participants may view hemlock trees and some of the common things found on them that may be confused for HWA. DEC staff will also provide a brief pre-

sentation on the spotted lanternfly which will cover the biology, potential impacts, current status and the efforts to prevent the spread of this invasive insect. The workshop is free, but participants must register with Dan Carusone at 518668-4881 or djc69@cornell.edu. The hemlock woolly adelgid, a tiny insect from east Asia first discovered in New York in 1985, attacks forest and ornamental hemlock trees. It feeds on young twigs, causing needles to dry out and drop prematurely and causing branch dieback. Hemlock decline and mortality typically occur within four to 10 years of infestation in the insect’s northern range. In 2017, a small cluster of HWA was discovered on an eastern hemlock tree on Prospect Mountain near the village of Lake George. Crews from DEC and NYSHI surveyed 250 acres on the mountain and found only two other infested trees, both only a short distance from where the infestation was first discovered. The infested trees and nearby trees were treated by staff from the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program. ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

Give yourself the best gift of all

Living in our free society has many perks. All too often, we never really appreciate how good we have it until we face that By Dan Alexander unexpected event that • PUBLISHER • could change one’s life dramatically. Be it a health scare, a simple accident at home, a sudden job disruption or a family/ personal crisis or change. It can happen to any of us, at any time or at any level of life. This wonderful life also comes with certain responsibilities, some mandatory, like taxes; others are optional, such as volunteering or choosing to contribute financially. We frequently hear of heroic deeds and humanitarian tasks like guardsman and soldiers returning from service to our country, individuals donating organs so that another may enjoy a fuller life, volunteer firefighters risking life and limb to enter into burning buildings to save lives, volunteers devoting countless hours to shelter and feed homeless individuals and pets, toys being donated to brighten a child’s Christmas. How about those folks standing out in the cold to ring bells at the red kettles collecting funds for those less fortunate? No one forces us to perform those tasks. We do them because we know they must be done. Some among us accept those responsibilities cheerfully and with enthusiasm, devoting their life to good deeds whenever the need arises. None of us are in a position to do it all, but each of us in our own way needs to participate in these responsibilities. The difference between those who do and those who do not respond can be seen on their faces. The joy of helping someone other than yourself is a gift that can’t be replicated. Folks going through their own difficult times can often be lifted in spirit by focusing their attention on others. I encourage you to do your part. If you’re unsure where to start, or even if you are already active in volunteering your time and making financial contributions, may I suggest a contribution to the United Way, your local hospital, church, shelter or one of the many excellent organizations serving throughout our communities. Drop that spare change in the red kettles around town or volunteer some time to an organization. There is always room for another set of helping hands. As we approach the holiday season, pledge to do more this coming year than you’ve done in the past. Volunteer your time, dig a little deeper when making that contribution and do it with a smile on your face and joy in your heart. It is that type of effort made by millions around this country and around the world that provide hope for humanity and sooner or later will aid in creating a world at peace and harmony. ■

Sad to see Elise leave Willsboro

To the Editor: It was nice to read that Matt Manda and his wife, Elise Stefanik, acted like newlyweds, saved and bought a home like a normal couple, unlike many D.C elected. So while it was good to read, it is also sad. They have picked a nice village with a smaller population than our wonderful town of Willsboro that she has called home for her start. They will make excellent residents, and I would think it would make commuting easier for both. Congratulations. I know some folks from Willsboro called Elise out for not being from here, but heck, most of them are not from here. I came here in ’88 from New Hampshire, others came from different states or even from the city. One thing no one can deny, she has been a great congresswoman and one that put Willsboro on the map as having elected the youngest congresswoman, until this last election. Another credit to her calling Willsboro her home, she always answered the call to make appearances, to help, to be a friend, to support our needs and help everyone, regardless of party. Wow, when I think about it, she does that for the whole district. I find it sad that I will now read all the press and it will be tagged “Stefanik R- Schuylerville,” I so much loved seeing R-Willsboro. Elise, while neither of us are “locals,” my wife and I thank you for being a wonderful resident while it lasted and we will miss seeing you at the Turtle Island Café, Willsboro Hardware, the Willsboro Diner

Westport Central School Board: Time to unite following merger vote

To the Editor: Dec. 4 marked a historic day for the Westport Central School District and community at large. A proposition to reorganize and centralize the Westport Central School District with the Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School District was placed before qualified voters. After a detailed and audited count of every ballot, qualified voters of both districts have voted by a significant majority in favor of merging our two school districts. Now, it is time for us to come together to strive for the best possible outcome from our years of work and strong emotions. Regardless of whether you voted in favor or against a merger, we all share a common goal: Our collective aspirations of giving our youth the best education possible with the resources we can dedicate while growing our community. This goal is also shared by the Elizabethtown-Lewis community. This important common goal should unite, not divide us as we move forward to make the new, unified single school community the best school district and school community for all involved. We recognize that there will be many questions yet to be answered and pledge to do our best to inform the public.

Pearl Harbor victims deserve remembrance

To the Editor: Pearl Harbor Day has come and gone again, and it is my hope that we, as a peace seeking nation, will take it upon ourselves to meditate for a few moments in honor of those hundreds of U.S. Naval sailors who lost their lives resulting from a horrible bombing attack of the naval base in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. Many of these naval personnel are still entombed in the ocean floor. This attack instigated a huge Pacific war which took hundreds of thousand lives there, and beyond, for the next four years. These events are not commonly recognized by many in today’s society. Time it was! - Dennis Galloway, Lake George ■ » Letters Cont. on pg. 7 This free community newspaper exists to serve the informational needs of the community and to stimulate a robust local economy. Consumers should read fine print on insurance plans

» Letters Cont. from pg. 6

Climate change does exist — it’s called ‘spring, summer, fall and winter’

To the Editor: Lance Clark’s guest op-ed was well written but dead wrong on climate change deniers. We want a clean healthy planet because we live here too. We don’t want to pay for a phony movement that is just a carbon tax on Americans to fund political agendas and to line the pockets of bureaucrats. Climate “change” became that because the global warming hoax was disproved. They had to change the name. They got caught fudging historical weather data to “prove” their phony science. Nothing that they have come up with is based in fact. Most of their “studies” were funded so that the “scientists” could keep getting paid if they gave them the “right” result in their reports. Thank God that Trump got us out of the stupid Paris accord that rewarded the biggest polluters in the world and was designed to impoverish Americans. We “deniers” acknowledge that there is “climate change.” We call this phenomena spring, summer, fall and winter. - Terry K. Hurlburt, Ticonderoga ■

To the Editor: With fewer than two weeks of the open enrollment period for health plans under the Affordable Care Act remaining, consumers nationwide are making critical health plan choices. A rule was put into place earlier this year that expands access to short-term, limitedduration insurance (STLDI) plans. These can be substandard plans that allow insurers to deny coverage based on preexisting conditions. They also lack comprehensive, essential coverage including emergency room, maternity care and mental health treatments. There is a reason these plans are touted as a more affordable option for consumers – because they don’t actually cover much. They simply provide an illusion of sufficient coverage. While some states have imposed limits on STLDI plans, the Congressional Budget Office estimates 2 million people will still buy them. Consumers who are seeking a lower cost insurance plan often don’t realize short-term health plans may not protect them when they get sick, leaving them with large surprise bills for uncovered care. As an organization committed to providing a voice for consumers in the health care debate, we urge consumers to read the fine print, consider their options carefully and

steer clear of these bare-bones plans. - Scott Mulhauser, Consumers for Quality Care, Washington, D.C. ■

Frustrated at power, phone outages

To the Editor: I believe that it is time for the people in this area to say, “Enough is enough!” There are people in this area who have been without phone service for over five days and I know of one who had to wait for three weeks. Many of the problems happened before the recent storms. I am encouraging anyone who has been without phone service for a prolonged length of time to call the New York State Public Service Commission and register their complaint 1-800-342-3377. - Richard Stewart, North Creek ■

Reusable bags a good gift for friends and environment

To the Editor: The perfect holiday gift for everyone on your list is reusable shopping bags. The Adirondack Daily Enterprise recently printed Rosalie Fontana’s informative commentary on the enormous problem that plastic disposal presents to our world. Hannaford and Price Chopper deserve major kudos for encouraging the transition to reusable bags by charging for

The balloting on the proposition, held on Dec. 4, received an 81 percent approval rate — with 194 yes votes cast versus 46 no votes. Superintendent Lynne Rutnik thanked the voters for their ongoing support. “This partnership allows us to continue to prioritize the district’s mission, vision values and goals which serve to support our students now and into the future,” she said in a prepared statement. “The pride this community feels for its schools is immense, and we are extremely grateful.” The project calls for boosting school security, improving athletic facilities, replacing heating boilers at the high school and improving access for people with mobility challenges. Also, the second-floor bridge between the high school and gymnasium — that now ends as a balcony in the gym lobby — will be extended south to the athletic weight room.

Th is walkway extension, which will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, is to cost $500,000. The weight room is not to receive renovation. Also, the “open classroom” configuration of the elementary school will be retained, but the classrooms, or “clusters” as they are called, will have new secure doors. Reconstructing the high school’s main entry to feature a secure second set of doors, is also called for. The project also includes reconstructing the existing tennis courts and adding a new one, as well as resurfacing the school district’s running track. Repairing the high school building’s windows, replacing the auditorium stage floor, and installing new fire alarms and smoke detection equipment are also elements of the project. Of the $5,272,191 projected cost, $3.6 million would be paid for over 15 years through local property taxes via payments on a loan. School officials say the entire project will not raise property taxes, as payments on an existing loan for a capital project, undertaken years ago, will end soon. Construction is to begin in August 2020, and is expected to be completed by December 2021. ■

Donations welcome at Community Bank N.A. Funds raised will go to community members in need INDIAN LAKE | The holidays are here and along with the bustle of the season comes the time of year to give back — shoppers donate spare change, offices host food drives and groups of family and friends come together to volunteer. Community Bank N.A. is once again joining the festive spirit this year by sponsoring or independently

organizing charity drives for local community members and families. Th roughout the bank’s four-state footprint, more than 70 branches are celebrating the holidays by lending a hand to neighbors in need, including Indian Lake. From food baskets to purchasing a holiday celebration for a local family, each branch chose its activity based on the current needs of their communities. In Indian Lake, the branch is collecting donations for community action through the end of the month. Donors will get the chance to hang a paper stock-

ing in the branch’s lobby with their name on it. “Going the extra mile for our community and neighbors is a fundamental part of our values,” Community Bank N.A. Indian Lake Branch Manager Brenda Lanphear said. “During the holidays, a little cheer or act of kindness can make a big difference to a family’s holiday season. I encourage all community members to get involved and help our neighbors in need.” Visit a Community Bank N.A. branch to learn how to help those in need this holiday season. ■

single-use plastic and offering alternatives. Aldi’s has introduced our community to how simple it is to bring your own bags. It is easy to bring your own bags to every store. Once into the habit, you will soon appreciate how much more manageable it is to cart your groceries around in a stronger bag. Reusable bags are long lasting. I don’t recall ever throwing one out, and indeed my oldest bag dates from the seventies. At that time, the dire consequences of plastic was not even in the forefront. The bag says “save a tree.” I launder them when dirty, use them for carting stuff everywhere and keep a couple in my car for unplanned shopping. In Hawaii, single use plastic bags are not provided in the entire state. Hotels in Hawaii provide a complementary reusable cloth bag for their guests to use and keep — how simple — and guests walk around town with the hotel logo on their bag. As a tourist community, Adirondack hotels could model this. In Europe, it is always bring your own bag. Now when I travel anywhere, I put a couple of my lightest bags into my suitcase. Reusable bags are also perfect holiday gifts for business owners and managers to give to employees — an opportunity to spread your logo. They are perfect swag at events and conferences. Of the 15 or so bags I have, I really only purchased a few. Reusable bags: not exciting, but a gift that everyone would appreciate. - Peggy Wiltberger, Saranac Lake ■

Guest column

Better sportsmanship needed from fans, parents By Eric Bennett GUEST W RITER

“You’re disgusting! You should be ashamed of yourself!” Imagine heading to work and routinely enduring comments like those as part of your job. A few weeks ago, while scouting a Friday night football game, those comments were hurled from the stands towards the officials working the game. In another recent altercation, an official resigned from working games because they were nose-tonose with a fan following a game who was convinced they were partisan. Behaviors like these must stop. Athletics provide incredible lessons for all participants involved in addition to the significant physiological benefits for athletes. As the father of a young son beginning to play organized sports, I am concerned that there will be fewer opportunities for athletic competition as officials begin to leave the profession. As an athletic director, I am concerned about the reduction in total number of games, the potential of not offering teams and the consistent rescheduling of events as the number of overall officials in America continues to decline. As fans, coaches, athletes and parents, we can and must do better. Sports will always elicit passionate responses ranging from jubilant elation to dejected devastation and everywhere in between. There is no question our desire to win and see our teams succeed is part of the fabric of who we are. I’m simply asking that we all (myself included) work to step back and realize that officials do not have inherent biases against our school or team or community. They are human beings objectively working to the best of their ability and in turn, providing positive opportunities for our children. To all of the officials out there working youth leagues, interscholastic games and matches and beyond, thank you. You are the backbone of American athletics and your strength and ability to shield yourself from the harsh rhetoric (and at times physical threats) is beyond commendable. Simply put, we need you. Keep plugging, help is on the way. ■ - Eric Bennett is a varsity football coach and the Saranac Lake Central School District athletic director.

LAKE GEORGE | A South Glens Falls man was arrested by Warren County Sheriff’s for an alleged burglary. Bryan J. Dixon, 35, was arrested Dec. 6 on the charge of burglary in the third degree, a class D felony. Prior to his arrest, officers were dispatched to the Pinebrook Motel in the Town of Lake George on Nov. 13, 2016 for a reported break in to one of the rooms. At the time of the report, there were no suspects to the crime. On Nov. 30, the sheriff ’s office was notified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services that a search of the State DNA Index System resulted in an association between the DNA profile derived from evidence that had been collected at the 2016 crime scene and a DNA specimen that had been taken from Dixon pursuant to a recent conviction for an unrelated crime. Dixon was arraigned in the Town of Lake George Court and released on his own recognizance to appear on Dec. 13. ■

This case remains under investigation by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit and Criminal Investigations Division. Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in this crash. ■

» Santa Cont. from pg. 1 “This prompts parents to center their attention on their children and have a good time,” he said. Hodgson and his son Bruce, as well as A.J. McGuire were among the Rotary members printing out photographs of children sitting on Santa’s lap as keepsakes. Operating the camera were club members Ed Griesmer and David Schlansker. Brandi Bessette, who waited at least 25 minutes in line with her children, said she was amazed by how patient the youngsters in line were — and that Rotary distributed a memorable toy to each child. “It’s so nice these people do this,” she said soon after Santa handed out a Spider Man punching bag to three-year-old Alex Tyrell of Chestertown. “They are making a lot of kids very happy today.” Nearby, members of the Friends of the town of Chester Library were giving a new book to each child. Linda Taverni, chairman of the group, explained The Friends’ motive in distributing about 200 books, representing 35 or so titles. “Our goal is to stimulate the love of reading and the use of the town library,” she said.

get to make a gingerbread house,” he said. “You can’t get this at Macy’s!” Club president Chris Aiken also offered a comment. “Our Rotary members enjoy giving back to the community,” he said, looking at all the smiling faces. Nearby in the town courtroom, young members of Girl Scout troop 332 sold cookies. Nine-yearold Gianna Tucci had baked a chocolate variety with peanut-flavored chips. Lily Warrington, also a Girl Scout, had made mint-flavored cookies. “It’s fun hanging out with friends,” Gianna said, looking toward Lily. Lily Warrington revealed her thoughts. “Who doesn’t love coming here for a visit with Santa and having some cookies?” After Santa had talked with 190 children over three hours, Rotary member Al Muench, the man behind the beard, reported several highlights of his day. “A little girl gave me a cookie and a drawing that I couldn’t figure out,” he said with a hoarse voice. “And another girl was worried, she wanted to make sure I’d get to take a vacation!” ■

With balanced roster of wrestlers, WarEagles eye success in 2018-19

By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

LAKE LUZERNE | Despite the loss of outstanding wrestlers to graduation in June, the robust roster of this year’s Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George wrestling team is predicted to boost its success this season. Larry Rounds, who coaches the team along with Mike Varmette, said that his 2018 WarEagles lineup reflects a wide range of experience. “Half of our wrestlers are veterans and Section II contenders, and others are young or brand new to the sport,” he said. The talent is well-distributed through the weight classes, however, so the prospects of the team winning meets are greater than in prior years, he continued. “We have talent more spread out through the weight classes, which makes us more competitive as a team,” he said. I’m very optimistic about this season.” The WarEagles’ seniors have achieved considerable individual success in prior years: • Logan Duers, wrestling at 152 or 160, is a defending Section II Champ who wrestled in the state tournament, Rounds said. “Logan is a dynamic athlete, and this year he’s added more muscle — he works hard,” the coach said. • Cody York, wrestling at 182, fought his way to the state tourney several times in his career, Rounds said. “Cody has been lifting weights off-season, and he’s gained 20 pounds of muscle,” Rounds said. “He’s eyeing a Sectional title.” • William Mitcham, was the No. 2 seed in Sectionals last year, and he placed in the tournament in both last spring and in 2017, Rounds said. “Mitcham is a great athlete, a real contender — and he still has untapped athletic ability,” Rounds said, noting that Mitcham has an effective low-level attack for wrestlers in the 285-pound weight class. • Gary Spotswood, who will be wrestling at 145 or 152 pounds, has in the past worked out in practice with Logan Duers, which has provided him with a lot of experience, Rounds said. He also noted Spotswood’s considerable success in cross-country, which has contributed to his endurance in matches. “Gary’s looking to break through,” Rounds said. “He’s a hard worker, and that will pay off for him.”

The 2018-19 Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George WarEagles Wrestling Team includes (front row, left to right): Cody York, Gary Spotswood, William Mitcham, Logan Duers, Brendan Lanby, (row 2): coach Larry Rounds, Gavin McCabe, Carter McIntosh, Colby Hoolihan, Quinton Fox, Leon Reynolds, coach Mike Varmette, (row 3): Cameron Duers, Mike Fuss, Justin Hoffman, and Logan Marissal. (Not pictured): Kyle Dolan, Caleb Carpenter Photo by Thom Randall Among the wrestlers joining these seniors is middleweight junior Mike Fuss who placed sixth in Sectionals last season despite an injury. Rounds said he’s wrestled off season and that “He’ll be a real contender.” Also, there’s sophomore Justin Hoffman, from a family of wrestlers, who recently achieved a sixth-place finish at the Virginia Beach Nationals tournament and is expected to be quite successful at 160-170 pounds. in addition, there’s junior Cameron Duers, who last year shared a weight class with his brother Logan, which Rounds said toughened him up. “They wrestled each other last year in the Queensbury tournament, and it started off friendly, but it ended up in a classic living-room match,” Rounds recalled. “This year, Cameron will be wrestling at 195 pounds — taking his ef-

fective middle-weight style to that upper weight class. He should be very successful.” The team also features freshman Quinton Fox, who qualified for Sectionals in his rookie year of wrestling, Rounds said. “Quinton is very driven, and we’re expecting good things,” he said. Co-coach Mike Varmette said that junior Colby Hoolihan and younger wrestlers including Kyle Dolan, Carter McIntosh, Caleb Carpenter and Gavin McCabe in the lightweight classes have considerable potential. “They are all showing a lot of promise,” he said, adding that the WarEagles’ fairly new youth wrestling program has been turning out wrestlers with promise. “All our wrestlers are pushing each other, and the team chemistry is building,” Varmette said. ■

LAKE GEORGE/LAKE LUZERNE | The Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George WarEagles are flying high as they launch their wrestling season, having won two meets and placing fifth among 16 teams entered in a prestigious upstate New York tournament.

Their first meet of the season was held Nov 28 against Hudson Falls, and the WarEagles won the non-league battle 45-42. Next up was the annual Bill Anderson Memorial Tournament held Dec. 1 by the North Syracuse Central High School in Cicero, NY, and the WarEagles placed higher than twothirds of the teams competing. Burghers place 2nd at Duanesburg mass meet Wbg. defeats farlarger schools By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

DUANESBURG | The Warrensburg High School wrestling team continued to advance and show promise in their 2018-19 season as they placed second Dec. 8 in the Duanesburg Duals event. In this five-way team meet, they lost to only one school, Saratoga Springs— which has about nine times greater enrollment than Warrensburg. The Burghers won their first four team matchups, in which they defeated Schoharie 54-17, beat Ravena 43-39, then defeated Albany 62-18 — despite Albany’s 10times greater enrollment — and downed host Duanesburg 46-34, then lost to Saratoga 41-36 in the final round. Factoring in the loss was that Warrensburg had several of their experienced wrestlers absent from the meet due to illness or injuries.

Winning all five of their matches for the day were seniors Chris Wilson at 220 pounds, Nolan McNeill at 195, and Zack Davis at 138 pounds; plus 8th grader freshman Dylan Winchell at 120. Burgher wrestlers winning four of their five matches were 8th grader Dante Corriveau at 113 pounds, freshman Tanner McKenna at 126, sophomore Zach Carpenter at 132 and junior Jacob Clear at 285. Clear, who lost only to a wrestler ranked No. 3 in the section, is 9-1 so far this season. Corriveau’s one loss was to an athlete from Saratoga, but the Burgher 8th grader was not pinned in the battle. Coach McKenna said Corriveau had an outstanding day for a first-year wrestler. “It’s December — early in the season — but every one of our wrestlers is working hard. We have a lot of underclassmen stepping up and they’ll get better and better as time goes on.”

WARRENSBURG BURIES GRANVILLE IN LEAGUE MEET

On Dec. 5, Warrensburg defeated Granville 60-18, and the contest featured some younger Burghers that coach McKenna said have a lot of potential.

Warrensburg senior Nolan McNeill, one of the Burghers’ two wrestling team captains, pins an opponent Dec. 8 during the annual Duanesburg Duals meet. Although losing by a wide margin, Granville’s middle-weight wrestlers had victories — their athletes won at 152, 160 and 170 pounds in which Burgher newcomers Thomas Combs and Hunter Nemec, both freshmen, experienced their varsity debuts. The highest-scoring match of the day featured Dante Corriveau in a wild battle in which he was edged out 19-17 by Brent Perry of Granville. Warrensburg athletes Chris Wilson, Robert Ranous and Landian Templeton all were credited with forfeits. ■
