Plans underway for major sewer project

FROM FIGHTING FLAMES TO BATTLING CANCER Firefighter community, pancake breakfast to benefit veteran 911 dispatcher

By Brian Happel STAFF WRITER

PERU | Plans are in place for $4.6 million in upgrades that include two new pumping stations and about 11,000 feet of new lines across parts of the town. But 44 home and business owners could potentially act as a roadblock. See PERU SEWER » pg. 3

Big buck contest for Honor Flight

More than 200 local hunters recently participated in a Big Buck Contest, raising $2,117 for the North Country Honor Flight. The owners and staff of D&D Meats and Jeezum Crow Smokehouse in West Chazy thanked hunters and contest sponsors for making the donation possible; they said the funds will help send four veterans on the Honor Flight.

AU SABLE FORKS | For the last two decades, Craig Scholl has answered hundreds of calls for help. Now, the veteran 911 dispatcher is battling his own health crisis and his comrades are doing what they do best- stepping up to help, this time for one of their own. “It hits closer to home for us, we’re always the ones providing help and never ask for help. This is our way to give back to him and all he’s done for emergency services,” said Michael Cross, past Au Sable Forks fire chief, volunteer firefighter and fellow Clinton County 911 dispatcher. Unknowingly to Scholl, as he recently geared up for major surgery in Baltimore, Au Sable Forks volunteer fi refighters voted to host their upcoming monthly breakfast to help Scholl with early medical expenses. “We decided this month that we wanted to do something for him,” Cross said of the local department’s decision to help the well-known fi rst responder and former Dannemora and South Plattsburgh firefighter. The fire department will donate all proceeds from their Feb. 2 Big Breakfast Benefit to Scholl as he now recovers from successful kidney surgery in Maryland and gears up for further treatment and expensive travel costs. “He was still in such great spirits and has a great attitude about it all, I have no doubt he’s going to beat this.” The breakfast is being held on Sunday, Feb. 2, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Au Sable Forks Fire Department, and volunteers hope it’ll be one of their most successful yet. Cost is $8 adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for children under age 12. “This one is a bit more meaningful to us, he’s been a great mentor to me and so many others and I don’t think he’s realized how many lives he’s touched and what a long standing affect he’s had on this county,” Cross said. Fellow Clinton County 911 dispatchers have also launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with the mounting expenses, including boarding costs for Scholl’s three cherished dogs as he undergoes care. For Cross, the quick response to news of Scholl’s battle “is a true testament to the North Country. We really do live in a special place, and when someone needs help, we respond.” ■

New supervisor welcomed this month By Brian Happel STAFF WRITER

SCHUYLER FALLS | A new year typically brings at least some changes in local governments across the region. Schuyler Falls is no different, as new supervisor Kevin Randall and new council members Reginald Facteau and Vernon Bruno began their work at the town’s organizational meeting this month. “It’s a little overwhelming taking off on a new adventure in life,” admitted Randall, who was elected to the position last fall. “Especially since I have no

experience as far as the town business because I didn’t start out as a volunteer, on the planning board, or the zoning board. But, everybody’s jumped in and answered all of my questions.” Randall, who also works as a lieutenant at Clinton County Correctional Facility in Dannemora and has been a member of the Schuyler Falls fi re department for more than 3 decades, said the biggest reason he wanted to take on the supervisor job was his concern about the infrastructure in town and wanting to upgrade it. “You’ve got to be in it to win it, so to speak. You can’t do it from the outside. You have to be here. That’s why I ran because I see things that need to be done.” One of Randall’s goals is to work with New York State Electric and Gas Corporation or NYSEG, to bring natural

gas to the town. He is considering going door-to-door to gauge how many residents would be interested in making the switch. Randall also wants to work closely with the water districts involved with the town to make sure leaks get fi xed and systems are upgraded to prevent bigger problems in the future. And, he hopes to have the new park on River Street fi nished this spring. Randall said the previous supervisor, Richard Potiker, had a lot of other projects being worked on that he is now taking a closer look at. “I got some good advice from the outgoing supervisor saying, ‘You see all of these folders with projects? Pick a couple each year and work through them.’ It’s better to see a few projects to fruition rather than get pulled in 90 directions and not accomplish any of them.” ■

Fidelis Care’s Qualified Health Plans offer some of the lowest monthly premiums available!

PLATTSBURGH | Authorities say a Mooers man was running from a parole officer when he got swept into the icy waters of the Saranac River and drowned. Searchers recovered Michael Trombly’s body Jan. 15, more than 24 hours after he ran into the icy waters near the Plattsburgh City Parking Lot on Broad Street as he reportedly fled from a parole officer. Plattsburgh City Police said the officer called 911 and had searchers to the area within minutes, but authorities lost sight of Trombly, 41, in the water as he passed the Green Street pedestrian bridge. City Police, along with city firefighters and Cumberland Head Cold Water Rescue crews, spent several hours searching the area that day before efforts were called off at dusk. Then deeming the search a recovery mission, city police and members of the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team and Adirondack Technical Rescue Task Force returned to the area the following morning to resume their efforts. Though darkness again threatened to hamper the search, State Police found sonar readings that led them to Trombly’s submerged body near the Dock Street boat launch. Family and friends were left reeling by Trombly’s unexpected death and are and vision now mourning the loss. ■

The town is requesting 28 permanent easements and 16 temporary easements for the construction project on parts of Elm Street, Main Street, Maiden Lane, North Bend Street and Sanborn Lane. Officials say without signatures on all 44 easements, the system upgrades could be delayed. This month, residents had a chance to ask questions at an informational meeting held at the town hall. Officials called it the best attended meeting they’ve seen in quite some time. Board members, Water and Sewer Superintendent Courtney Tetrault and AES Northeast representatives were on hand to give any answers they could. “It’s not a situation where the town is going to dig a hole in your front yard and then say, ‘See you later.’ The easement

says in it that the town’s got to restore this to the same or similar conditions it was,” Town Attorney Matthew Favro said in response to concerns expressed by residents. “They can’t just come in willy-nilly and start digging holes.” Favro added that easements are common on properties, pointing out that many homes have them for utilities. The easements essentially give the town and construction workers associated with the sewer upgrades access to properties in order to do their work. One resident questioned what would happen if they didn’t want to sign the easement. “Well, we’re going to have an infrastructure pipe in the ground. We’re going to need to maintain that pipe,”

The BG/NC Sun | January 25, 2020 • 3

Tetrault responded. “If we ever have an issue and we need to dig it up, we need to have access to the property.” A state grant will cover one million dollars for the project. The rest will come from water district users. Town Supervisor Brandy McDonald said users would see an increase of $24 to $29 per month, depending on what the final bid for the project turns out to be. Those bids could go out in the next two months. The goal is to start construction early in the spring and finish in late fall. However, a delay in getting easement signatures could push the finish date for the upgrades into next year. McDonald urged any affected resident with questions to contact the town as soon as possible. ■

Climate Change is Insignificant compared to Worldwide Exponential Population Growth! By David Safrany

By Dan Alexander

Overdevelopment and unchecked Worldwide exponential population growth, on the other hand, are alarmingly short-term issues -- of the order of only 50 to well under 100 years!! While politicians and their climate activist minions are demanding huge multinational investments IMMEDIATELY in order to mitigate long-term climate change effects, the world’s population continues to grow by more than 1 percent a year, which equates to approximately 80 to 100 million people a year, and a doubling every 50 to 70 years -- a rough estimate but in the ballpark! The population is currently 7.7 billion. If this growth rate continues, in only 50 to 70 years the population will approach or even exceed 15 billion! Clearly, the imminent threat to mankind is the societal unrest that comes with this exponential population growth --- some of which we are already seeing -- crime, pollution, destruction of the Amazon rain forest because of government-promoted immigration to the region, drug addiction, etc. -- because they are short-term effects -- VERY short-term! The devastation to future generations in only 50 to 70 years should scare the hell out of young people -- most of whom will still be alive! The author tries to justify his premise by evoking something called “triangulating on the truth”. Triangulating on truth?!! There’s no such thing as “triangulating on the truth”! There’s a little thing called the Scientific Method by which truth is defined as criticallyproven irrefutable fact, and doesn’t need “triangulating”! The author’s “triangulating on the truth”, in fact, is really nothing more than narrowing down a large number of possibilities to a few -- none of which is in fact established irrefutable fact. A consensus of most likely possibilities is not truth and -- rightly or wrongly -- is nothing but opinion. To claim that somehow a consensus of groupthink opinions leads to truth is ludicrous beyond explanation! The author further strongly implies that, somehow, because 197 countries, 13 civilian climate change This is a paid column

PAID GUEST COLUMNIST

PUBLISHER

The Guest Editorial -- a few months ago - -”Climate change: triangulating on the truth” needs commenting on a number of points. The article is seriously flawed in a number of ways, yet written in a tone that implies it is authoritative when in fact it is an opinion piece by a pro-climate change spokesman. The author’s general premise that mankind is headed for certain and imminent disaster unless climate change effects are addressed immediately is total nonsense. No one denies that there are many coastal venues that are vital for national security and other reasons, and must be protected or relocated if their proximity to coastlines threatens them. HOWEVER, HE GLARINGLY FAILS TO DISCUSS OR EVEN MENTION THE POSSIBILIT Y THAT A MUCH MORE IMMINENT THREAT TO MANKIND IS NOT CLIM ATE CHANGE BUT, RATHER, UNCHECKED WORLDWIDE OVERDEVELOPMENT AND POPULATION GROWTH. Here’s why. The earth’s climate has been changing for as long as there has been a climate to change! Estimates range from millions of years to 2 to 3 billion years, depending on whose numbers you use. Either number is a long time -- even by geological standards -- and a lot of nasty things can happen in 2 to 3 billion years! Think: Shifting of the earth’s axis; Global atmospheric darkening by ash from worldwide volcanic eruptions; Global worldwide atmospheric dust from asteroid impacts; etc. Clearly, excluding some instantaneous massive asteroid impact, climate change phenomena are slow and long-term. They do not happen over a person’s lifetime. Significant coastal erosion, earth axis shifts and sea level fluctuations occur over centuries, millennia and even eons.

Impeachment phase II has now begun. While many believe they know beyond a shadow of a doubt which way the upcoming trial will turn out, the simple truth is with the wacky way partisan politics seems to be going these days, the real answer is, only time will tell. We continue to witness the ratcheting up of hardball politics, with each move on the chess table. Both sides are forced to circle the wagons while moving farther left and right to protect the power they now enjoy. As a kid growing up in the 1960s, I’m reminded of the conflict in Northern Ireland with the feud between the Catholics, who were Nationalists (right), and the Protestants Loyal Unionists (left). The Protestants wanted the province to remain a part of the United Kingdom while the Catholics wanted the province to become part of the Republic of Ireland. Caught in the middle, as peacekeepers, were the British Army and the Royal Ulster Constabulary viewing the escalating conflict as terrorism, while the IRA Irish Republican Army viewed the conflict as guerrilla warfare for national independence. Those battles raged on, from 1968 to 1998, and ultimately ended, leading to a power-sharing arrangement in the Northern Ireland Assembly. It seems odd today to think that two Christian sects, each embracing the core belief of “turning the other check”, could not get along, but it is not unlike what we are experiencing in a prosperous America today. Could our conflict escalate similarly here at home? Well, think no further than the left-leaning, militant anti-fascists Antifa movement that materialized during the last election and will likely reemerge soon as our national election kicks into high gear. While on the far right, we find groups like the neo-Nazis and the KKK always looking to stir up trouble. In many ways, our political discontent has been brewing since the impeachment of President Clinton in 1999. Cooler heads on either side have yet to appear, and anger seems to grow worse daily, ginned up by television talking heads and national media organizations. When looking back in history, ours, as well as other political conflicts, unless something changes soon to unite the nation’s majority, our evenly divided nation is unfortunately headed for even darker days ahead. Only time will tell where the guilt and innocence is found and how this period in our nation’s history will be looked upon by future generations when our history will be but a chapter in the past. ■

they impact people lives on a daily basis. The motto Live United has become something very personal. I wanted to personally thank everyone who was kind and welcoming. I especially wanted to thank the entire staff of The United Way of the Adirondacks for all their support, they are truly amazing people and my personal heroes. What you all do daily is truly inspiring and again I thank you. There would be no Campaign if not for the generosity of so many. Thank you to all the many wonderful donors, businesses and people who allowed us the time to spread the message of the United Way and what we do. Your support is greatly appreciated. I am proud to be associated with such an organization.

To the Editor: Being the 2020 United Way Campaign chair for Clinton County has been one of the most gratifying experiences I have ever been a part of. The word generosity has a new meaning for me as well. Since the very first meeting I had with the campaign team and every meeting or presentation since then has been a truly wonderfully humbling experience. I was lucky enough to travel through the three counties and meet some of the most generous and kind people imaginable. I saw firsthand what many of the partner agencies do and how

agencies and all 5 branches of the military agree that climate change needs immediate mitigation, there must be credibility to their climate change conclusions. Sorry, sir, even given the benefit of a doubt that they are in fact expert on climate change, doesn’t mean they are right! The “experts” have been wrong many times in the past! Isaac Newton -- certainly an expert in mathematical physics -- concluded that flight would require much more power for sustenance until Bernoulli’s fluid-flow findings proved him wrong. “Expert” scientists held symposia on “polywater” whose very existence later proved to be wrong. The entire U.S. market for mobile phones was estimated by marketing experts to be 5000 units! Similarly low predictions were made for copying machines! The Chicago Tribune ran the classic headline in 1948 that read “Dewey beats Truman” -- one of the greatest media blunders ever! Hillary projected to defeat Trump by a landslide in 2016 is another media blunder! And there are many, many more examples! Clearly, instead of endless discussions defending the consensus opinions of climate change “experts”, we should be talking about the threats of short-term versus long-term threats to mankind. The amazing thing is that many of an ignorant populace, politicians and climate change activists actually WANT this growth. THE POLITICIANS’ SILENCE ON THE REAL CRISIS -- WORLDWIDE UNCHECKED POPULATION GROWTH -- IS DEAFENING! But not to worry -- unless you are a young person. If the world population doubling time continues at 50 to 70 years, long-term climate change effects, in only a few years, will become the least of mankind’s problems. The politicians’ legislative lethargy will soon be interrupted by a little thing colloquially called “The Population Bomb”. BOOM! ■

Granny Goose

Today is your most important possession By Jan Gosselin COLUMNIST

I have been stashing favorite writings for more years than I would like to admit. I would like to take this opportunity to share one of my favorites, entitled “The Station,” date unknown, written by Robert J. Hastings. “Tucked away in our subconscious minds is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long, long trip that almost spans the continent. We’re traveling by passenger train, and out the windows we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatland and valleys, of mountains and rolling hills, of biting winter and blazing summer and cavorting spring and docile fall. But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour we will pull into the station. There will be bands playing, and flags waving. And once we get there so many wonderful dreams will come true. So many wishes will be fulfilled and so many pieces of our lives finally will be neatly fitted together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering...waiting, waiting, waiting, for the station. However, sooner or later we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.”

UPDATES FROM THE 21ST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF NEW YORK

NY-21

“When we reach the station, that will be it, we cry.” Translated it means, “When I am 18, that will be it. When I buy a new 450 SL Mercedes Benz, that will be it. When I put the last kid through college that will be it. When I have paid off the mortgage that will be it. When I reach the age of retirement, that will be it. I shall live happily ever after.” Unfortunately, once we get it, then it disappears. The station somehow hides itself at the end of an endless track. “Relish the moment” is a good motto, especially when coupled with Psalm 11:24,“This is the day which the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” It isn’t the burdens of today that drive men mad. Rather, it is regret over yesterday or fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who would rob us of today. So, stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot oftener, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more and cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough. Additionally, I do realize that my days of “swimming more rivers and climbing more mountains” are over. However, I shall have no problem going barefoot, watching more sunsets and absolutely no problem eating more ice cream. ■

Stefanik cosponsors legislation on new bail reform laws WASHINGTON, D.C. | Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is a cosponsor of the bipartisan Bill’s Promise Act, legislation that would direct the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct a comprehensive assessment of how individuals on pre-trial release are monitored at the federal, state, and local levels. Under New York’s new bail reform policy, cash bail is not required for most defendants accused of misdemeanors and non-violent felonies including those arrested for drug possession, or even many property crimes like theft and burglary. Instead, the law encourages alternatives such as supervision by a pretrial services agency. The bill addresses issues surrounding pretrial release programs in New York and ensures

communities are not put at risk; the legislation was carefully developed with input from the law enforcement and anti-violence advocacy communities. “I am proud to cosponsor this bill to address dangerous bail reform policies that continue to put our communities at risk,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “This legislation will require an assessment of failed bail reform laws exactly like the one that Governor Cuomo has implemented in New York, which has had significant impacts in the North Country and put many communities at risk. I stand united with local law enforcement and various members of our communities against these harmful bail reform policies and look forward to working with my colleagues to moving this legislation forward.” ■

Stefanik named Trump New York campaign chair GLENS FALLS | Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has been selected as a Trump campaign honorary New York state chair, the Trump campaign announced last week. Stefanik said that she will work to advance President Trump’s results-driven agenda up and down the ballot in New York. She represents New York’s 21st District, whose voters overwhelmingly elected President Trump in 2016. “I’m honored to have been chosen as a New York state chair for the Trump campaign in 2020,” said Stefanik. “President Trump’s agenda of creating jobs, strengthening our military, securing our borders, negotiating better trade deals, and lowering crime rates has historic support in the 21st Congressional District and across upstate New York. I’m

looking forward to working with his campaign to deliver another decisive victory in my district. President Trump’s record of results will win handily over far-left radical resistance in November.” “Our New York Trump Victory leadership team will work to elect Republicans across the state,” said Brad Parscale, campaign manager of Donald J. Trump for President, Inc., and Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the RNC. “President Trump has delivered a soaring economy, rebalanced trade relations, lowered healthcare costs, and fought to secure our border. His successes can be felt nationwide and electing Republicans across New York will help to ensure he can achieve more victories for the American people for many years to come.” ■

Stefanik Named Member of President Trump’s Impeachment Defense Team WASHINGTON, D.C. | Congresswoman Elise Stefanik released the below statement following the White House announcement that she will serve as a member of President Trump’s Impeachment Defense Team: “I am honored to be named by President Trump as a Member of his Impeachment Defense Team,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I am proud to stand up for the Constitution, my constituents in New York’s 21st District, and the American people’s vote.”

This initial list includes the following Members: Congressman Doug Collins; Congressman Mike Johnson ; Congressman Jim Jordan; Congresswoman Debbie Lesko; Congressman Mark Meadows; Congressman ,John Ratcliffe; Congresswoman Elise Stefanik; Congressman Lee Zeldin. Throughout this processt these Members of Congress have provided guidance to the White House team, which was prohibited from participating in the proceedings concocted by Democrats in the House of Representatives. The President looks forward to their continued participation and is confident that the Members will help expeditiously end this brazen political vendetta on behalf of the American people. ■

United Way thanks contributors

To the Editor: This is a challenging year for us all, but it will be especially hard on the agencies who step forward in tough times,

to make certain there is a helping hand for those whose circumstances leave them even more vulnerable. Many of those agencies depend on support from the community through the United Way of the Adirondack Region, Inc. Over the years the United Way of the Adirondack Region, Inc. has continually expanded their services, playing a vital role in our communities by providing area non-profits and those they assist, with not only funding but many other valuable resources. The United Way is a highly valued asset in our community. Despite our own personal struggles, we must not forget that every contribution, no matter how small, even if it’s less than you’ve been able to give in the past, is still a significant contribution.

BOMBARDIER TRAINS BACK ON TRACK

Company faces backlash following error By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

PLATTSBURGH | The New York Metropolitan Transit Authority announced last week that all 298 of its model R179 railcars were being taken off the track due to two

door malfunction incidents. According to several witnesses, the doors opened slightly while moving along the tracks. The subway cars were manufactured in the Plattsburgh Bombardier location along Main Mill Street. “Out of an abundance of caution, NYCT removed all R179 train cars from service overnight for thorough inspection and re-deployed other spare cars to continue service for this morning’s rush and ensure minimal impacts to customers,” New York City Transit President Andy Byford said in a statement. Bombardier claimed that the problem originated with the doors themselves that come from Nanjing Kangni

Mechanical & Electrical Co. Ltd in China, and the problem was fi xed. A few days after being pulled from the tracks, the R179 subway cars were back in rotation. “Our root cause analysis indicates that these incidents were due to a rare and very specific combination of unforeseen mechanical and operational circumstances that have proven extremely difficult for us to replicate and were unlikely to reoccur,” Bombardier said in a statement. The MTA paid about $600 million for the manufacturing of hundreds of subway cars in Plattsburgh. When the project was audited in November, results showed that Bombardier is behind schedule when coming out with cars. ■

SOUND ADVICE FOR STUDENTS Brilliant Pathways program matches kids with mentors By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER

ESSEX | More than 100 professionals from multiple fields fanned out across the North County last week, visiting schools and explaining to students what it takes to make it in their respective careers. Sponsored by CFES Br illia nt Pathways in Essex, “Mentor Madness Day” was the region’s largest single-day mentoring event, reaching more than 3,000 students in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. It was, the organization said, “an opportunity to learn about potential professions and the steps it takes to get there. Mentors also focused on the importance of practicing essential skills taught by CFES such as perseverance and agility to be successful in life.” “In class, we learn about CFES Essential Skills like teamwork and leadership, so today was great because we got to hear people talk about those things in real life,” said Beekmantown 5th-grader Lizzy Burnham. Volunteers mentored at Crown Point, Boquet Valley, Keene, Ticonderoga, Peru, Plattsburgh, Lake Placid, Beekmantown, Moriah, Willsboro and Ausable Valley. The day long event was part of a $12 million U.S. Department of Education GEAR UP grant secured

by CFES Brilliant Pathways – a global nonprofit that has helped more than 100,000 students become college and career ready since 1991. “CFES and this event help students to be deliberate in what they put their energy into and are guiding them to align their strengths with their passions,” said Larry Allan, Dean of Judicial Review at SUNY-Plattsburgh, who mentored at Beekmantown. “At its core, CFES assists students in the development of the essential skills they need to navigate school, interpersonal relationships, and ultimately life.” Students were told of the wide variety of careers available, and they were also told that success takes work. Crown Point CFES fellow Shawna McIntosh said 6th and 8th grade classes enjoyed and appreciated Mentor Madness. “They were astonished by how difficult college really can be,” she said. “It showed them that college is harder than people think it is, and that there are many more expectations in college than there are in high school.” Both of these grades also learned about managing their time and schedules, McIntosh said. A goal of Mentor Madness is to bring in mentors from different professions so that students are exposed to many careers. Mentors ranged in age and experience from Middlebury College students to professionals from the UVM Health Network, University of Vermont, Essex County Sheriff’s Department, Plattsburgh YMCA, Norsk Titanium, UFirst Federal Credit Union, and others. “This was a wonderful opportunity

to share our experiences with such a welcoming school district,” said Joe Zeitler, Assistant Director of Admissions at Castleton University, who mentored at Ticonderoga. “CFES Mentor Madness Day is the best way for students to interact and ask questions about college and career readiness to professionals. It was a true success.” Mentors focused on CFES Brilliant Pathways’ core value that education is the ticket to a successful future, whether it be a four-year degree or a certificate of value in the trades. Former attorney Jack Helfgott, owner of Yipes Yipes! Auto Accessories & Graphics, told students that he was able to change professions multiple times because he had a college degree, and that they would be creating opportunities for themselves by doing the same. Students learned that even fun and games are not always fun and games.“There were a lot of students interested in sports, however they didn’t realize how much travel and time management it involved,” McIntosh said. “Some even said that they plan on working harder in their sport of choice and in the classroom so that they can make it on a college team. Overall they enjoyed it and are already asking when we can do it again.” By the end of the day, mentors said they got as much out of the experience as the students. “Being a mentor at a CFES program was not only beneficial for the students, but especially so for me,” said Helfgott. “The interaction with the students reminded me of all the potential that will be leading us in the future and reinvigorated myself to look at all opportunities.” ■

Cuomo proposal to boost cinema, craft beverages By Brian Happel STAFF WRITER

PLATTSBURGH | Beer and wine could soon join popcorn and candy at the concession stand in movie theaters across the region after a plan announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) during his annual New York State of the State address. The governor wants to amend the Alcoholic Beverage Control law to allow the sale of beer, wine, cider, mead and spirits at movie theaters. Currently, they must have full kitchens and tables inside the screening rooms to offer alcohol to adult customers. “New York’s craft beverage industry is flourishing,” Cuomo said in a statement announcing the proposal. “This measure will remove outdated Prohibition-era rules that hamper private sector investment and give more New Yorkers the opportunity to responsibly enjoy a drink at the movies.” Under the proposal, adults holding tickets to movies rated PG-13 or higher could purchase alcoholic beverages. Only one drink could be sold to a customer at a time. “It’s not going to be people running rampant with alcohol around the building,” Cumberland 12 Cinemas General Manager Craig Cathers offered, addressing concerns parents may have about underage drinking. “We’re very family focused. If we do it, it would be very regulated.” Cathers also pointed out that selling alcohol

responsibly could be a big boost for movie theaters and local breweries. “I think it could open up a new demographic of people who maybe aren’t coming to the movies now,” Cathers said. Matt Ray, who owns Livingood’s in Peru, isn’t convinced. “My concern is it’s not going to help me,” Ray countered. “I’m not against doing it. It’s just a lie if it’s being presented as it’s going to help small New York State breweries, because it’s not. Not unless it’s set up to ensure that it will.” Ray fears that major brewers like Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors or Heineken will jump in and get the vast majority of taps. “If the state wants to help grow this segment of independent-owned craft breweries in the state, then make it so we have fair access to the market.” Ray suggested providing incentives to movie theaters and other tourism-related locations, like Whiteface Mountain or Plattsburgh International Airport, that offer New York State-brewed beers. Cathers likes the idea of keeping sales local. “We would open up to a lot of local companies and see who wanted to come in if we wanted to do taps or bottled stuff.” New York now ranks in the top five in the U.S. for its number of craft beverage producers in every category, including third in the country for breweries. ■

Adult members of the audience could soon be enjoying a beer along with their movie if a proposal b y G o v. A ndr e w C uo m o b e co me s law. The governor wants to make it easier for movie theaters to sell alcohol.

Adirondack Coast Camp moving to Beekmantown Lacey looking for partnership with NBA’s Nets By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PLATTSBURGH | The Adirondack Coast Basketball Camp will be moving to a new home to open the new decade, and hopes to have new sponsors along with a chance for campers to receive free sneakers.

be coached by some of the top basketball minds in the region. “I have had the opportunity to seeing the Adirondack Coast Basketball Camp for the last couple of years as I have been a speaker at this camp,” said Jerrad Dumont, North Country Community College womens basketball coach. “I believe this to be a great camp for all levels of athlete. The coaches all bring great energy for the game and make this such a fun and competitive atmosphere for all levels. It is great to have this camp in our area and will only help the level of basketball in our area.”

sneakers to all campers who attend, a desire of Lacey’s to help athletes out as he was helped out as a youth. “I came from an extremely poor family — my parents could not afford basketball sneakers,” Lacey said. “On the first day of practice my freshman year through senior year, there would always be a free pair of Adidas Pro Model shoes sitting in my locker. To this day I have no idea who did it but I have narrowed it down to two — either Joe Cardany or Paul Marcus, who both donate to this camp every year. That is why I am asking the Brooklyn Nets organization for free sneakers for all the campers.”

The Adirondack Coast Basketball Camp is entering its fifth season this summer with a new location at Beekmantown Central School and what founder Tom Lacey hopes will be a new tradition — free shoes for all campers. Photo provided

Founder Tom Lacey, a long-time coach and official in the Plattsburgh area, said he founded the free basketball instructional camp — which he said is the only free camp in the state — based on his personal life. “I grew up very poor and I wanted to make sure this camp was available to everyone,” said Lacey, who has brought in a host of volunteer coaches, players and staff to help with the camp over the past four years.

THE CAMP

This year, the camp will move to Beekmantown Central School, where it will take place over a two week span, with boys going June 29-July 3 and girls July 6-10. Each camper will get a basketball, two movie passes, a camp shirt, free breakfast and lunch, along with many trophies for different categories. Campers will get the chance to work on their game through drills and competition, and will hear and

“It’s always an honor to be asked to address the players at his camp,” said high school and college coaching great Jon Konowitz. “What Tom has created here is an opportunity for countless girls and boys would never have had a chance like this to develop their skills and deepen their passion for the game.” “There are many young basketball enthusiasts in the North Country,” said Clinton womens coach and former Seton girls coach Donna Dixon. “This free camp gives them the opportunity to enhance their skill level. As a local coach, a shout-out of appreciation goes to Tom and the volunteer coaches he has put together. I am proud to be associated with this camp.”

FREE SHOES

Later in the month, Lacey will be meeting with the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA to form a partnership where they could help donate free

The camp continues to add local support from businesses and coaches who want to see the model succeed, as does Lacey. “To have someone put a free camp on for the boys and girls of the North Country shows the dedication love that Tom has for the game,” said Peru coach Matt Berry. “All of the people involved to continually show up free of charge. My daughter’s go every year even if they can only make a day or two. It is an unbelievable opportunity for kids in the North Country to be exposed to guest speakers and coaches of unbelievable levels. The instruction they get there in a week for free rivals any camp that I have paid for myself or sent my former athletes to.” “My daughter has attended the Adirondack Coast Basketball Camp for the past two years,” said Dave Baroody. “The camp is fun, time is well spent, and skills are taught and reinforced each day. Further, Tom Lacey has assembled guest speakers that are elite as well as a staff that is extremely helpful, knowledgeable and serious about the game of basketball. We are very much looking forward to next year’s camp.” “ Wit hout quest ion, t he Adirondack Coast Basketball Camp is the most organized and inclusive sports related opportunity in the North Country,” said Saranac athletic director Brent Denis. “Sadly, when this camp began, some questioned the quality a free camp could provide. I credit Tom Lacey for recruiting the most kid-centered coaches in the North Country and the best basketball minds in the region to provide a camp experience second to none.” “The camp is an awesome program,” said Thom Loreman. “Tom Lacey has gotten some of the best minds in basketball to ‘volunteer’ in today’s world — it’s so great to make this available to our local kids and especially for free.” See ADK COAST CAMP » pg. 12

Cougars rally, defeat Eagles in wild third period By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PLATTSBURGH | You could say the first two periods were the calm before the storm. The Beekmantown Eagles and Northeastern Clinton Cougars skated to a 0-0 tie through 30 minutes of play in a goalie/defense controlled contest that appeared to be heading for a scoreless overtime Jan. 20. Then it all broke loose. Beekmantown scored twice in the first 2:25 of the third, only to see NCCS rebound with three goals in the remainder of the period to score a 3-2 win. “We felt we were the better team all night and we felt we could have been ahead going into the third,” said Cougars head coach Scott Lafountain. “Then we had a couple of defensive breakdowns and they were ahead 2-0.” Dalton Kane opened scoring for the Eagles, collecting a shot rebound to the open side of the net and converting for a 1-0 lead on assists from Luke Moser and Nolan Latinville. Just over one minute later, Alex Brienza took a centering pass from Collin Latinville and scored to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. “It’s one of those games where if you do not score when you are supposed to it can come back to haunt you, but at that point there was still 12 minutes left in the game and we tried to keep everyone calm on the bench and we started to create some power play opportunities and it finally started to produce goals,” said Lafountain. “We were a little down with the way the period started, but we just kept pushing,” said captain Lucas Bedard. “The coaches always tell us to work hard and not stop no matter the score and we were able to get the win tonight.” Chase Letoruneau opened the scoring for the Cougars with 8:39 left in the game, firing a slapshot that went into the net off a Ryan Johnston, Jr. assist. After a pair of Beekmantown penalties, Lafountain used his team’s timeout to set up the short-lived two man advantage. While the Cougars did not score with two extra skaters, Blake Chevalier took the puck off a rebound from a Reid LaValley shot and put it home for the Equalizer. Bedard also assisted on the play.

“In the timeout, coach told us to keep working and battle as much as we can because the game was not over,” Chevalier said. “We took a shot and it bounced off the goalies pads and came right out to my stick, and I was able to tap it in.” Less than 1:30 later, it was Bedard’s turn, taking a crossing pass from Noah Gonyo and firing a slapper into the net for the go ahead goal. “I was disappointed in my first two shots because I kind of whiffed on them,” Bedard said. “The coaches kept telling me not to stop and I just started working harder and I saw my shot open up and was able to get it off and on net.” Beekmantown still had its chances in the final four minutes, at one point playing with a three-man advantage as the goalie was pulled off the ice in the final minute with two Cougars in the penalty box. Ethan Garrand finished with 22 saves for the Cougars in the win, while Riley Hansen had 42 saves for the Eagles in a contest of two of the top goalies in the CVAC. “I got the best goalie in Ethan, and that is to take nothing away from Riley, he also had a great game tonight.” ■

“Tom’s free summer basketball camps in Plattsburgh are incredible,” said Clinton Community College AD Kevin Daugherty. “What started as a dream for Tom has become a reality due to his love for the game and an amazing amount of organization and focus. He staffs the camps with workers and lecturers that have a similar passion and are willing to work for free. This can be attributed to the number of local hoopsters that respect Tom and want to contribute to our area youth and basketball in general. Basketballs, T-shirts,trophies, instruction and fun. It doesn’t get any better than that.” “The free week long summer basketball camp that Tom Lacey has developed and grown over the last few years for the Plattsburgh area youth is one of a kind,” said PSUC womens coach Cheryl Cole. “He does a tremendous job of bringing in a variety of different professionals in the basketball coaching community to share their knowledge and experience to our local youth, and it is accessible to all the boys and girls in the area.” “Tom has done a fantastic job by organizing this basketball camp for young athletes in the greater Plattsburgh area,” said AuSable Valley girls coach Roger Long. “The ability to get sponsors and to get staff to volunteer their time is the first of many hurdles to make something like this happen. I have been honored to work his camp from the beginning. Athletics is becoming an expense that not every family

can afford their child the opportunity to experience. This camp offers a chance to get kids involved and interested in something without the burden on a family’s budget. I hope he continues to grow the camp and give more children this wonderful opportunity.” “Tom Lacey’s youth basketball camp has been one of the biggest draws around the community premiering outstanding coaches, game play and learning skills, and legendary speakers,” said Plattsburgh recreation coordinator Justyn Gordon. “The camp is a complete Godsend for this community and surrounding areas,” said Chazy boys coach and former Plattsburgh State All American Travis Gorham. “I’m grateful to coach Lacey for bringing this camp to the area. Where else can you get a completely free camp with great college, high school and local talent helping teach our youth the game we all love. I sure hope to be a part of this camp moving forward as I know it will only grow immensely in quantity and quality.” “Tom does a tremendous job running The Adirondack Coast Basketball Camp,” said Potsdam State womens head coach Brittany Cohen. “The camp is a tremendous asset to the Plattsburgh community, and provides kids with a great opportunity to learn basketball and other life skills. I was honored to be involved as a guest speaker.” “Tom Lacey had a vision for a camp that would be available to any young athlete interested in sharing his passion for basketball,” said former Plattsburgh State coach Tom

Curle. “The camp is now thriving and has been a unique camp that the youth in the area look forward to every year.” “With the creation of the free Adirondack Coast Basketball Camp, Tom Lacey has made camp available to any interested athletes,” said former Beekmantown coach Maceo Dubose. “I applaud the Adirondack Coast Basketball camp for their tireless efforts to ensure every child has the opportunity to attend a summer training program,” said Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Plattsburgh.) “Not only have they worked to provide two separate week-long training sessions to any student, in grades third through twelve, wishing to participate, but their focus on caring for the whole student by providing them with breakfast, lunch and even new footwear, demonstrates their passion for the sport and the community as a whole. I thank Tom Lacey and his entire team for their dedication and I wish them another successful year.” “Fesette Realty is proud to join forces with Tom and his highly qualified staff of volunteer coaches to put on this camp for our area’s youth,” said Neil Fesette. “Completely free sport camps are super rare so I’m just psyched to play a small role in giving kids this unique opportunity.” “Stepping up as one of the first sponsors for the Adirondack Coast Premier Basketball camp was a no-brainer for our family business,” said Shane Parliament, owner of Plattsburgh Paving. “Growing up playing sports and raising three children

who are always on the move from one game to the next, I know first hand the positive impact this healthy outlet can provide. Playing a part in making this the only free basketball camp for kids throughout the community, and seeing the joy it provides them, has been incredible. From guest speakers to expert staff, the dedication and heart Tom has put into making this camp not only one of the best in the area, but accessible for everyone is tremendous. We’re honored to give back and support the health of the community with this camp, sharing something we are passionate about.” “For some, basketball is completely woven into their DNA and has, in many ways, shaped their lives and character — that’s who Tom Lacey is,” said John Kmack. “That’s why I wasn’t at all surprised when Lacey started to develop a basketball camp in Plattsburgh and offer it for free, because he wants to give another generation of Plattsburgh kids the same opportunity that he’s had to learn the game and develop life skills around it. What he’s established is a unique and important opportunity for young basketball players in Plattsburgh. I also know that with Lacey’s tenacity, he’s going to find a way to make sure that it continues to grow and that opportunities are available for kids that are growing up in the same way and in the same place that he did. It’s the next chapter in the ongoing Legend of Lacey and it’s a great story of paying it forward.” ■
