More than 200 local hunters recently participated in a Big Buck Contest, raising $2,117 for the North Country Honor Flight. The owners and staff of D&D Meats and Jeezum Crow Smokehouse in West Chazy thanked hunters and contest sponsors for making the donation possible; they said the funds will help send four veterans on the Honor Flight.

AU SABLE FORKS | For the last two decades, Craig Scholl has answered hundreds of calls for help. Now, the veteran 911 dispatcher is battling his own health crisis and his comrades are doing what they do best- stepping up to help, this time for one of their own. “It hits closer to home for us, we’re always the ones providing help and never ask for help. This is our way to give back to him and all he’s done for emergency services,” said Michael Cross, past Au Sable Forks fire chief, volunteer firefighter and fellow Clinton County 911 dispatcher. Unknowingly to Scholl, as he recently geared up for major surgery in Baltimore, Au Sable Forks volunteer fi refighters voted to host their upcoming monthly breakfast to help Scholl with early medical expenses. “We decided this month that we wanted to do something for him,” Cross said of the local department’s decision to help the well-known fi rst responder and former Dannemora and South Plattsburgh firefighter. The fire department will donate all proceeds from their Feb. 2 Big Breakfast Benefit to Scholl as he now recovers from successful kidney surgery in Maryland and gears up for further treatment and expensive travel costs. “He was still in such great spirits and has a great attitude about it all, I have no doubt he’s going to beat this.” The breakfast is being held on Sunday, Feb. 2, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Au Sable Forks Fire Department, and volunteers hope it’ll be one of their most successful yet. Cost is $8 adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for children under age 12. “This one is a bit more meaningful to us, he’s been a great mentor to me and so many others and I don’t think he’s realized how many lives he’s touched and what a long standing affect he’s had on this county,” Cross said. Fellow Clinton County 911 dispatchers have also launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with the mounting expenses, including boarding costs for Scholl’s three cherished dogs as he undergoes care. For Cross, the quick response to news of Scholl’s battle “is a true testament to the North Country. We really do live in a special place, and when someone needs help, we respond.” ■

New supervisor welcomed this month By Brian Happel STAFF WRITER
SCHUYLER FALLS | A new year typically brings at least some changes in local governments across the region. Schuyler Falls is no different, as new supervisor Kevin Randall and new council members Reginald Facteau and Vernon Bruno began their work at the town’s organizational meeting this month. “It’s a little overwhelming taking off on a new adventure in life,” admitted Randall, who was elected to the position last fall. “Especially since I have no
experience as far as the town business because I didn’t start out as a volunteer, on the planning board, or the zoning board. But, everybody’s jumped in and answered all of my questions.” Randall, who also works as a lieutenant at Clinton County Correctional Facility in Dannemora and has been a member of the Schuyler Falls fi re department for more than 3 decades, said the biggest reason he wanted to take on the supervisor job was his concern about the infrastructure in town and wanting to upgrade it. “You’ve got to be in it to win it, so to speak. You can’t do it from the outside. You have to be here. That’s why I ran because I see things that need to be done.” One of Randall’s goals is to work with New York State Electric and Gas Corporation or NYSEG, to bring natural
gas to the town. He is considering going door-to-door to gauge how many residents would be interested in making the switch. Randall also wants to work closely with the water districts involved with the town to make sure leaks get fi xed and systems are upgraded to prevent bigger problems in the future. And, he hopes to have the new park on River Street fi nished this spring. Randall said the previous supervisor, Richard Potiker, had a lot of other projects being worked on that he is now taking a closer look at. “I got some good advice from the outgoing supervisor saying, ‘You see all of these folders with projects? Pick a couple each year and work through them.’ It’s better to see a few projects to fruition rather than get pulled in 90 directions and not accomplish any of them.” ■
