Prison Truths of vaping coming to light seamstress Vaping among youth rises to 30 percent released for ‘good behavior’ By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

PLATTSBURGH | Since September of 2019, there have been a total of 60 confirmed vaping related deaths, four of which were in New York. Overall, there have been about 2,700 known cases of vaping-related illnesses in the last year. The use of vape products have only gone up, according to Reality Check of New York, a program designed to increase awareness among people, specifically youth, on the dangers of smoking. Statistics by Reality Check showed that vaping among high schoolers has increased 78 percent. 42 percent of seniors in high school vape, and 30 percent of high schoolers in general admitted to using vape products. However, it is not that easy to catch, according to Reality Check Program Coordinator Rachel Danis. “In school, [students] are hiding them in

DANNEMORA | Joyce Mitchell recently walked free from prison less than five years after she helped two murderers escape Clinton Correctional Facility. The notorious prison seamstress once again made national headlines on Feb. 6 as news of her impending release sent shock waves through the region still gripped by the 2015 escape of Richard Matt and David Sweat. In an exclusive interview re-aired on The Today Show the day of her release, Mitchell said she “got caught up” in the pair’s escape fantasy when she smuggled hand tools into the maximum-security facility to aid their escape.

PLATTSBURGH | As the North Country rallies behind him, veteran sports racer Nick LaGoy is recovering from serious injuries following a high-speed racing accident earlier this month. LaGoy, 28, was racing in the championship race at the Boonville Snow Festival after having won three earlier heats that weekend when his snowmobile crossed

paths with another, sending him crashing into a corner wall of the half-mile track at 100 mph. The Plattsburgh business owner was unconscious and airlifted by helicopter to Albany Medical Trauma Center, where he underwent serious back and spinal surgery. As news of LaGoy’s accident spread, supporters came out in mass offering help to his loved ones and launching a GoFundMe campaign that reached its $20,000 goal in less than a week. With a long road to recovery ahead of him, LaGoy thanked the community for their overwhelming support as he continues to heal downstate. See LAGOY » pg. 3

Fishing to fight addiction

By Andrea VanValkenburg STAFF WRITER

DANNEMOR A | After the shocking and unexpected death of a close childhood friend, Jerry Haley knew he wanted to do something to help the local fight against addiction. “You’re either part of the problem or part of the solution,” Haley said about spearheading the Reeling For Recovery ice-fishing tournament following his friend’s death in 2017. “This year’s theme is ‘Get hooked on fishing, not on drugs’. Fishing was a very positive outlet I had as a kid, and it can be for other kids too,” the Dannemora native said. “We want to get kids hooked on something other than just sitting at home or playing video games or getting in trouble.” That’s why Haley is once again donating all proceeds to Champlain Valley Family Center to help fund youth education, support and counseling services.

The Plattsburgh agency works with schools, kids and families to teach and support skill building for making healthy choices, managing emotions, conflict resolution and communication skills to help prevent substance use. Using funds from last year’s successful tournament, Champlain Valley Family Center was able to provide multiple new program initiatives for at-risk youth. “And this year is going to be even bigger,” the local father said about adding more kid-friendly attractions, prizes and vendors to the day-long event. This year’s tournament is being held Feb. 29 with the ice-fi shing derby kicking off on both Chazy and Chateaugay lakes at 5 a.m. Snow-sculpting teams will begin digging at about 12 p.m. with face painting, snowshoei n g , minnow races and a Paw Patrol meet-and-greet through the afternoon. This year’s event features more than 200 door prizes, 40 raffle baskets and $10,000 in cash and prizes, including cash pay-outs for the top trout, pike and perch catches. The award ceremony and silent auction will be held at the Lyon Mountain American Legion. Tournament entry is $30 for adults; $10 for kids age 16 and under and $10 for the lunker pool. Registration can be completed at Lashway’s Meat Market and Deli on South

Even though the minimum age to buy tobacco and vaping products is 21, that doesn’t stop those under from getting access to juuls and more. One way for minors to access these vapes is through the internet. Since there is no way to confirm identification, they are able to lie about their age and buy products as wholesale. With all these vaping products, they sell them to other students for a profit, spreading the epidemic. According to Danis, there have been quite a few incidents where kids were found with vapes in schools where it turns out the parent bought it for them, thinking it was better than smoking cigarettes. Obviously, that is not the case, as juuling or vaping is also dangerous. “The best strategy is around educating people of the dangers,” John Bernardi said. “If [parents] are approached in a more informative way and enlightened, there’s a better chance that they’re going to listen.” A large reason products such as juuls are so popular among kids is social media. Apps such as Tik Tok and Youtube give a video platform where users’ activity is monitored. Watching trending videos of vaping tricks or reviews lets juul ads target them on other sites. Despite the fact that juul claims they advertise towards adults, 34% of its users are underage. “There’s over 20,000 flavors on the market now,” Danis said about juuls and vaping liquids. “Because it’s not regulated, they can use the same exact label as Sour Patch Kids, Sweedish Fish and Sour Worms.” In the late 1900s, tobacco product advertisements were banned from television and

radio. However, since then, social media has become a new form of advertising, one that is not covered in the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act. This has politicians and more looking for a new act that can protect teenagers and kids from seeing online vaping ads. “If you go on some of these sites, you can order just about anything you want,” Assemblyman Billy Jones said. “We have 35 bills in the state legislature right now, but to tell you the truth, I think if we pass 34 of them, I still don’t know if it’s going to solve the problem … we’ve got to go back to the tobacco motto. We can ban all the flavors we want, but they’re going to find something. Education and taxing this stuff - that’s how we made some serious strides in tobacco.” One juul pod is equivalent to 20-40 cigarettes in terms of nicotine, and kids admit to vaping 2-4 pods a day. This is extremely bad for their underdeveloped lungs, and the oil inside the vaping products stick to the inside of the lung, causing difficulty breathing, fatigue, chest pain, fever, vomiting and more. Illegal THC cartridges are also a big danger, as they could contain Vitamin E, which is bad for your lungs if smoked or vaped. Vaping-associated pulmonary injury, which is a vaping-related lung disease, can be life threatening, especially for kids. This year, a new juul-like product is hitting the market, called Puff Bars. They have approximately 50mg of nicotine and contain around 200 “puffs” per bar. The tri-county area has yet to see them, but Danis is sure they will become popular among the youth, and to keep an eye out for them around schools and other youth areas. ■

Mitchell was supposed to be the getaway driver during the daring 2015 escape, but backed out at the last minute, leaving the pair to flee on foot. Once discovered, the escape prompted an intense multiweek search that ultimately ended with Matt’s death and Mitchell’s arrest. Sweat was shot and captured about three weeks after he escaped through a manhole and is now serving his life sentence at Wende Correctional Facility. The prison break thrust the region into the national spotlight and eventually became the focus of a Showtime television miniseries. Mitchell, 54, faced up to seven years in prison after pleading MATTRESS " guilty to promoting prison contraband and was previously denied parole. But with credit for good behavior, Mitchell was recently granted an early conditional release and was slated to leave Bedford Hills Correctional Facility Feb. 8. Opinion

Thoughts from behind the pressline

Where will the future take us?

suncommunitynews.com/opinions

By Dan Alexander PUBLISHER

Each week as I sit down in front of the computer screen to offer some perspective on current aff airs, my goal is twofold. From this simple businessman’s perch, I hope to offer an optimistic approach to the future and try to give readers something to think about from a different perspective. In this age of sharp division, there appears to be little interest in the “middle ground” or opportunities to seek compromise. The old theory used to be when running for office Democrats would move to the left and Republicans to the right during the primaries to obtain their parties’ nomination. Then move to the center once the final election race was on since that’s where the race was won or lost. The differences between how to address the issues facing the country were not that far apart in past years. Unlike “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, where one bed is too hard, the other bed was too soft, and the last one was just right, I wonder if we’ve lost sight of “just right”? There are so many special interests and varying positions on all those interests one has to wonder what our future has in store. The goals and priorities of each party are not just at odds with each other they don’t even agree on what they are. With the country so polarized now, after the impeachment trials and State of the Union speech, it seems pretty clear that President Trump and House Speaker Pelosi appear to be at wit’s end. While it would appear that Republicans and Democrats would be lining up after their leaders but both sides seem to have splintering factions who are not pleased with the direction of their parties. The path to the nominations for the Democrats appears very cloudy after the debacle in Iowa and while Republicans claim to be in lockstep behind the President, he continues to provide self-inflicted damage causing party faithful reason to doubt the “four more years” mantra. Clearly, there is no consensus leader on the horizon, which only means more disruption, feuding, future investigations, and possible impeachment trials regardless of which party successfully claims the White House, Congress or the Senate in the upcoming election. Our future rests on what we can agree on, and right now we can’t agree on much. ■

Regarding guest column

To the Editor: I am writing concerning the guest column opinion of January 25, 2020 by David Sofrany. It has been said the population of the world could be put into the state of Texas. God is in control of the population. He takes care of humankind through natural disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes. We are to be fruitful and multiply through good and faithful marriages. As to climate change, we are to do our part but God is in control there too. — Rose Bruce, Plattsburgh ■

HIGH SPEED CHASE ENDS DOWNSTATE WITH THREE ARRESTS Plattsburgh-based State Police said the pursuit began in Massena Monday when U.S. Border Patrol agents tried to stop a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe near the international border. Troopers chased the vehicle through Ellenburg and into Plattsburgh, but ended the pursuit after two other vehicles were struck by the fleeing Tahoe, sending one person to CVPH Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. State Police later located the vehicle on the Adirondack northway near Exit 23 in Wilton, where three men inside then reportedly fled on foot. All three were arrested a short time later as authorities searched the Tahoe and allegedly found 50 pounds of marijuana and an undisclosed amount of prescription painkillers.

Monday’s chase through the Northern Tier led to two accidents, three arrests and a drug cache By Andrea VanValkenburg STAFF WRITER

Norberdo was arrested as a fugitive of justice from Rhode Island and charged with a parole violation. All were charged with resisting arrest. Reyes was arraigned in Wilton Town Court and released from custody following his arrest. Espinal and Norberdo were remanded to Saratoga County Jail on parole violations. ■

Dominic Rainey allegedly sent threatening emails By Andrea VanValkenburg STAFF WRITER

PLATTSBURGH | A Keeseville man is accused of recently threatening a local TV station, just months after he allegedly made threats against a local community. Plattsburgh-based State Police arrested Dominic J. Rainey, 30, on Feb. 9, after he allegedly sent threatening emails to television station NBC-5 WPTZ a day earlier. He was arrested on one count of making a terroristic threat and was released from custody following his arraignment. Rainey was arrested on the same charge in September 2019 after he reportedly made threats against the town of Saranac and its residents. That online threat prompted widespread public concern and led to heightened security at area schools while it was being investigated. Rainey will reappear in Plattsburgh Town Court later this month to face the allegations. ■

Saranac claims Section VII boys indoor title SPORTS EDITOR

PLATTSBURGH | The Saranac varsity boys indoor track and field team is right where it expects to be at the end of the season: sectional champions. The Chiefs (147) held off Plattsburgh High (104) to claim the title Saturday, followed by Beekmantown, Saranac Lake, Moriah/ Boquet Valley, Peru, Seton Catholic, Ticonderoga and AuSable Valley. For the Chiefs, Zashon Abrams ran a time of 6.96 seconds to win the 55 dash, followed by Tanner Estes of Peru and Dade Cox of Beekmantown. “The season has gone pretty good running the 55, and I want to see if I can get that personal best time I have been working toward all season long,” said Abrams. The other three wins for the Chiefs came on the field, where Connor Kiroy had a throw of 53-00 to win the weight throw ahead of teammate Casey Breyette and Connor Mcginnis of Beekmantown. Garrett Adolfo was the only long jumper over 19 feet with a mark of 19-1 in scoring ahead of teammate Anthony Bernardi and Plattsburgh High’s Jaylen Gonzalez, while Bernardi recorded a triple jump of 38-0 to defeat Plattsburgh High athletes Kyle LaValley and Adam Elshafay for the sectional title.

“I wanted to go out pretty easy and pick up the pace at the end and it went how I wanted it to,” said Glicksman. “This is the first time this season that all four of us were in the race, which is cool because we all push each other. This week was more about tactics, so I tried to hold the pace back early.” Van Buren came back to win a pair of events, running a time of 1:34.21 to win the 600 over Rowan Jackson of PHS and teammate Landon Peters, while also running a time of 2:47.83 in the 1,000 in edging McCulley and Glicksman. “The season started out strong but then I got sick, but we went down to Darthmouth and I ran a strong 1,000 and we have been riding the wave ever since,” said Van Buren. Fogarty picked up a win in the 3,200 with a time of 10:02.58, ahead of Emery Tausinger of M/BV and Sam DeJordy of Seton. Cox scored a in the 300 in a time of 39.43, ahead of the Saranac trio of Abrams, Bernardi and Adolfo. “It was mostly a run down from my lane assignment and I was able to see everyone in front of me and chase them down,” said Cox. Tausinger joined M/BV teammates Denali Garnia, Gage Perry and Landon Peters to win the 3,200 relay in a time of 9:23.00 in a race where Saranac Lake and PHS were disqualified for lane violations and Saranac lost their baton. The Plattsburgh High team of LaValley,

Saranac girls complete sectional indoor title sweep By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PLATTSBURGH | The Saranac varsity girls indoor track and field team competed the sweep of the Section VII indoor track and field titles, scoring 109 points to claim the championship Saturday at the Plattsburgh State Field House. Plattsburgh High placed second with 95 points, followed by Beekmantown, Peru, Ticonderoga, Saranac Lake, AuSable Valley, Seton Catholic and Moriah/Boquet Valley. Leah Madden and Mackenzie Converse took the top two spots in the 300, wit Madden clocking in a 47.93 seconds, both ahead of Beekmantown’s Kennedy Ritter. “I was happy winning today and I am hoping to improve for the state qualifier,” said Madden, referring to next Saturday’s (Feb. 15) meet where the section will determine their NYSPHSAA meet team (March 7 meet). Marissa LeDuc score a win in the high jump with a height of 4-6 to beat out Beekmantown’s Lucianna Brown and Saranac teammate Angelena Fay. “My year went really well as my first indoor year doing high jump and I am looking to work on flipping my feet more,” said LeDuc. For the Hornets, Abi Batu-Tiako won the 55 dash with a time of 9.53 seconds over Peru’s Abby Bruce and PHS teammate Kennedy Baker, while also winning the triple jump with a mark of 32-5.5 over Lyons and Gabriella Laundry of PHS. “I wanted to keep a positive mentality for myself and my teammates throughout the day and I am ready to just continue to improve as we get to qualifiers,” said Batu-Tiako. Third place Beekmantown secured the most individual event wins, as Angelina Lyons won the 55 hurdles over Batu-Tiako and Kaitlyn Caron of Peru in a time of 7.84. Lyons then teamed with Ritter, Brown and Evelyn Roberts in the 640 relay; and the team of Mikayla Hamel, Ritter, Brown and Sierra Wood won the 1,600 relay. In the field, the Eagles got a win from Danielle Dyke in the long jump with a mark of 15-5.25, ahead of Bruce and Laundry. “It has been a competitive season and I was

“The season has been on and off because we could not get my mark consistent, but today we were able to find a good mark and be consistent throughout the day,” said Adolfo. “It has been pretty rough with my mark but I just got it down at practice the other day and it worked out this meet,” said Bernardi. PHS runner Matthieu Durkin scored the win in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.69, beating out Isaiah Mars of Ticonderoga and Aidan Hoogkamp of Beekmantown. “There has been a lot of fierce competition, especially with Aidan, he has really pushed me and today I was able to get out of the blocks and get it done,” said Durkin. “I’m just hoping I can keep getting personal best times and see how close I can get to (Cameron) Duffield (referring to last season’s 55 hurdles champ and state outdoor champion).” In what may have been the main event of the meet, Seton’s Jake Glicksman beat out a field that featured all state and state champions in the 1,600 with a time of 4:42.78, finishing ahead of Logan Van Buren (M/ BV) and the Saranac Lake champion duo of Peter Fogarty and Micah McCulley.

Ethan Waters, Durkin and Estes won the 640 relay with a time of 1:23.09. The race also had an issue when a Saranac runner ran into a can during the final baton exchange. The Beekmantown team of Hoogkamp, Alexander Jock, Izaiah Jock and Cox won the 1,600 relay in 3:53.05. Saranac Lake’s Patrick Alberga had a throw of 50-8 to win the shot put over the Saranac trio of Kiroy, Breyette and Branden Ashley. “The season has been going great but I have not been hitting the marks I want to, but we are getting there,” Alberga said. Plattsburgh High’s Benjamin Bourdeau scored the win in the high jump with a height of 5.6, beating out Peru’s Hadden Barcomb. “We have had a lot of back and forth in the event with good competition and I am happy I was able to get it done at sectionals,” said Bordeau. Based on the event, the top five to seven finishers in each will return the Plattsburgh State Field House Saturday, Feb. 15, where they will vie for positions on the Section VII state team which will compete at the NYSPHSAA championships March 7 in Staten Island. ■

able to pull through here at sectionals,” said Dyke. “I set a really big goal at the beginning of the season and have now been working on attaining that goal one piece at a time.” Peru got a win from the team of Bruce, Sara Crippen, Harley Gainer and Jennifer Owen in the 3,200 relay with a time of 11:22.60, while Crippen scored a win in the 600 over Sophia McKiernan of M/BV and LeDuc with a time of 1:49.96; and Gainer got the win in the 3,000 with a time of 12:00.34 over Faline Yang of Seton and Gillian Miner of Saranac. “We have been able to win most of the regular meets so we were expecting to have this result in the relay,” said Crippen. “We really want to keep making sure we can keep our pace and stay in the lead because we want to go to states.” “It was a pretty good run and I felt pretty good — I had some cramps late but I pushed through,” said Gainer. “I want to focus on getting some more strength in my shoulders and arms but right now it is about trying to get better times.” AuSable Valley’s Lily Potthast scored a win in the 1,500 with a time of 5:15.65 over McKiernan and Lea DeJordy of Seton, while also winning the 1,000 with a time of 3:28.72 ahead of Crippen and Savannah DeJordy of Seton. “I feel like I have gotten a lot stronger and faster this season, and I have been really fast in the mile, which has not been my best event in the past,” said Potthast, who added she will be attending Yale in the fall to continue her running career. Ticonderoga’s Lizzie Rich score a throw of 29-10 to win the shot put ahead of teammate Vivian Porter and Saranac Lake’s Caylen Skiff, while Red Storm thrower Mia Sanford won the weight throw with a mark of 36-10 ahead of Saranac teammates Madison DuBray and Abigail Duquette. “I started at this event just coming into indoor this season and I try to hit the weight room every day and work on my form,” said Rich. “Now, I just want to get to 30-feet. I have been throwing it at practice and warm ups, I just have to get it during the competition.” “It has been a really great season and I have loved the weight throw so much and I feel the more I have gone through the season, the more I have loved it,” Sanford said. “It has also taught me patience.” ■

Hornets eliminated in semifinals

DEATH NOTICES

By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

LAKE PLACID | The “home” Plattsburgh High girls hockey team laced their skates up in the same locker room the members of the 1980 US men’s hockey team used 40 years ago. Their opponent, Williamsville, was assigned the same locker room used by — yep — the USSR. However, the monumental task facing PHS in trying to beat Williamsville did not play out the same way 1980 did, as the defending NYSPHSAA champions scored a 7-0 win over the Hornets Saturday in the semifinal round. Hornet coach Trevor Cameron said, despite the one-sided score, his team played a solid game against a high level opponent. “I saw a whole lot of fight out of our team,” said Cameron. “We could have easily laid down after the first period, but that speaks to the character of our girls. They have a tremendous amount of heart and a fire inside them and fought against a very experienced team that had 12 seniors and 7-8 juniors. We just have to use it as motivation to drive us into next year.” “It was a rough start but we were able to get going towards the end of the game and do what we needed to do,” said junior captain Taylor Heywood. The Hornets only graduate one player, and return the entire core of their two consecutive Section VII championship winning team for 2020-21. “We return a lot of girls and we are going
