Ellenburg store ravaged by flames Thursday night fire at LaBarre’s By Andrea VanValkenburg STAFF WRITER
ELLENBURG | An overnight fire has destroyed a landmark store in Ellenburg. LaBarre’s Convenience Store had closed just two hours before raging flames were seen tearing through the building at about 10:30 p.m. Feb. 28. Firefighters from roughly a dozen fire departments across the region raced to the store on Route 11 as the inferno moved through the building Thursday night and engulfed portions of the attached deli and liquor store. High winds and frigid overnight temperatures made battling the flames even more challenging, but crews were eventually able to quell the flames before it spread further into another attached building and nearby home.
The Northern Adirondack varsity cheer team won the Section VII Co-ed title at the cheerleading championships Feb. 28 at the Plattsburgh State Field House. Dustin Barclay won the jump off event with Anika Knight placing fifth, while Bobcat all stars included Barclay, Knight, Jadyn LaValley, Elizabeth Nichols and Rylee Pivetta. Legislation discussed at forum, chamber facilitates Downstate budget priorities a concern among officials; North Country business confidence still high By Alina Walentowicz STAFF WRITER
Area lawmakers Sen. Betty Little (R), Assemblyman Dan Stec (R, C, I) and Assemblyman Billy Jones (D) provided insights to attendees at the chamber’s annual breakfast forum highlighting legislative topics of regional concern. Photo by Alina Walentowicz
PLATTSBURGH | A full house of 200+ combined area business and non-profit professionals, government officials and education administrators from throughout Clinton, Franklin and Essex counties filled Butcher Block’s Adirondack Room recently during the North Country Chamber of Commerce’s 2020 Annual Legislative Breakfast. Regional lawmakers offered updates and input on

STATE BUDGET’S LOCAL IMPACT
Along with Sen. Betty Little (R), who retires at the end of this year, Assemblyman Billy Jones (D) and Assemblyman Dan Stec (R, C, I) presented remarks surrounding the $176 billion New York state budget. Referring to this season as “March madness”, Jones emphasized his desire to stick within the confines of the budget as much as possible during the next month’s proceedings, which he thinks could help prevent potentially unfavorable legislation impacting the North Country as a result of downstate priorities—especially concerning medicaid spending and bail reform. Stec reinforced Jones’ concerns, saying the state budget should be, first and foremost, a financial document. See CHAMBER » pg. 4

LAST YEAR’S SUSTAINABLE ELECTRIC PRODUCT LAUNCH In addition to its available hybrid options, in 2019 the public-transit bus manufacturer announced the release of its long-range battery-electric bus—an expansion upon its LFS (Low Floor Series) platform. The new LFSe+ model was the first bus to pass the U.S. Federal Transit Association (FTA) pass/fail standard in Altoona, Pennsylvania, “required for any company selling buses in the United States that are purchased with federal funds,” according to a recent news release a n n o u n c i n g t h e accomplishment.
PLATTSBURGH | Now through April 17, high school students from across New York’s District 21 can submit original artwork in a variety of visual media to the Congressional Art Competition, also called “An Artistic Discovery” competition. This national contest, established in 1982, aims to encourage and highlight artistic youth talent throughout the country district by district. Since 2009, the Congressional Institute, a not-for-profit corporation, has sponsored the yearly initiative. According to New York-21 U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R), “Each year, it is a privilege to select artwork created by a talented young person from the North Country to be honored in the U.S. Capitol. [...] As co-chair of the Congressional Arts Caucus, I look forward to highlighting our creative students and their artwork.” Types of visual artwork accepted include: paintings, drawings, collages, prints, mixed media, computer-generated art and photography. PLATTSBURGH | A new contract between Quebecheadquartered Nova Bus and New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) secures a base order of 165, 40-feet-long hybrid buses with the option to purchase an additional 126 hybrid buses and 209 diesel buses, resulting in a potential total of 500 buses. This contract, announced at a recent press conference, is expected to produce a need for workers at the Volvo Group company’s Plattsburgh location with about 40 new jobs created as well as continued partnership possibilities with area suppliers. Plattsburgh General Manager Greg Cody said at a recent press event that he was proud of the manufacturer’s sustainable solutions and cross-border collaboration among teams. “The exceptional quality and durability of our buses, as well as the extraordinary support of our teams, are determining factors for the selection of Nova Bus [as the New York City MTA contract winner].” He concluded, “It’s a long order, and a good run for us.”

Plattsburgh imaging center puts patients first New MRI machine adds more lower-cost imaging options at AHI Imaging By Andrea VanValkenburg STAFF WRITER
PLATTSBURGH | A new $1.5 million MRI machine is bringing even more lower-cost imaging options to AHI Imaging. In just six years, the privately-owned Plattsburgh facility has expanded from a one-room operation inside Plattsburgh Medical Care into a growing independent practice specializing in X-rays, computerized tomography (CT) scans, ultrasounds and now magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). “We can do anything the hospital can do with an MRI,” said Jim Morgan, AHI owner, president and practicing ultrasound technician said, adding that the new MRI imaging includes specialized brain, abdominal and joint scans. The company prides itself on offering what it views as higher customer-focused care with significantly lower costs than larger competitors in the area. At AHI, patients can find $60 self-pay options for chest X-rays, where larger competitors charge nearly $450. Echocardiograms

are less than $400 at AHI, but can be roughly $1600 at a much larger competing imaging facility in the same town. “Patients can’t pay these huge bills anymore, we want to be more affordable. They deserve to have a higher level of care, it’s not about the dollar signs, said Morgan, who also operates a mobile X-ray clinic, which he brings to local nursing homes to help better care for patients on site. Morgan said AHI also aims to provide physician-centered collaboration and support with faster diagnostic results, more thorough cutting-edge imaging and higher patient care, often including same-day appointments. “More and more doctors are going to the private sector,” Morgan said of the shifting health industry. “We don’t work for a hospital. We don’t work for a radiologist. We work for the patient. If the patient needs to have something done, we want it to be done now. Today. And we

can get reports to their doctors in just 20 minutes.” It also strives to establish strong relationships with other privately owned practices and physicians, Morgan said, including larger facilities such as the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. With locations in Plattsburgh, Rochester, South Burlington and a satellite office in Malone, AHI Imaging continues to expand its services and later this year its location too. The low-cost imaging center plans to move to a large complex on Hammond Lane, a strategic move that will offer even more room for further expansion in the future. “Our goal will be to have an urgent-care center with full radiology,” Morgan said of his practice’s planned expansion. “It’s been really good, I only see us growing and growing. We just provide the best service at the most affordable price.” ■

“In New York State we have this awful, awful history of including things that have nothing to do with revenues and expenses in what is a $176 billion budget,” he said. “[...] we put things in the budget that would never pass on their own two legs, ‘cause they’re using the leverage of the spending plan to get controversial items through.”
BUSINESS CONFIDENCE REMAINS HIGH IN 2020
At place settings, guests received flyers summarizing the
recently announced Business Confidence Index from the chamber’s Annual Issues Survey of participating area businesses, reporting 96% confidence for 2020—a total unchanged from that reported in 2019. Based on this survey, North Country Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Garry Douglas said the regional business community’s four priorities for the year include: closing the state budget gap without raising taxes; state action to close cell phone service gaps in rural regions, particularly the Adirondacks; support for

GROWTH FOR THE NORTH COUNTRY’S “TRANSPORTATION EQUIPMENT CLUSTER”

This Nova Bus contract announcement comes just weeks after the news that fellow leading North Country employer and transportation manufacturer Bombardier, operating in Plattsburgh since 1995, confirmed the intended sale of its rail transit division to French global railway company Alstom. At the time of the division sale, North
Country Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Garry Douglas stated that “in North America and elsewhere, there has been a need for consolidation to create a larger and stronger competitor in the marketplace to face the growing presence of newer players from China and elsewhere. This combination should be able to compete even more effectively for more contracts in the future, keeping the already very busy operation in Plattsburgh even busier for years to come.” ■

Last year’s 2019 winning piece selected to represent New York-21 was “Woman in White” by Charlotte Butz, now a graduate from Cambridge High School. Similarly, the 2020 New York-21 contest winner’s artwork will be on display in the nation’s capitol for the next year among 435 total winning district submissions from throughout the country—one from each district. In addition, the selected student artist will be flown out to D.C.—accompanied by a guest of their choice—for June’s Congressional Art Competition ceremony featuring all chosen artists. These winning pieces will also be viewable on House.gov. Submissions must be within the maximum dimensions of 26 by 26 inches with a depth less than four inches— this includes any framing. Submissions must not exceed 15 pounds. To enter the New York-21 section of this nation-wide art contest, North Country students will need to deliver their submissions to one of Stefanik’s three district office locations in Watertown, Plattsburgh or Glens Falls, along with the completed 2020 student release form found online at House.gov. The winner can expect to be notified this spring. ■

Thoughts from behind the pressline
Lessons to learn from COVID-19
As a boy, I remember my maternal grandmother talking about the great Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-20. Today’s coronavirus panic is evocative of the 20th century’s greatest viral outbreak. Born in 1889, my grandmother died in 1989 at the age of 100. But back in 1918, at the end of World War I, she was 29 years old, married, and the mother of two young children. My mother was a one-year-old toddler in 1918. And my mom’s other sibling at that time, her brother Johnnie, was a growing, intelligent lad of six. Johnnie was described, by all family accounts, as a bright and sensitive boy who showed academic and athletic promise. The future must have looked very bright for little Johnnie. Yet in 1920, at the age of eight, Johnnie became one of the millions of worldwide victims of the Spanish flu. I learned that Johnnie’s death was a great shock to my grandparents, although my mother was too young to remember much of her brother’s young life. One of my mom’s earliest memories, at the age of three, is her parent’s home draped in black crepe with the neighbors, also dressed in black, dropping by to pay their respects. Thankfully, my mother survived the great 1918-20 pandemic. And while she came down with scarlet fever a short time later, she survived that illness, too, and went on to enjoy the life of a centenarian (now, plus three).
PUBLISHER
The coronavirus and its effects on the earth’s population and the many daily decisions we and others make have all come under intense scrutiny. In this worldwide pandemic scare are many lessons to be learned about how we conduct our lives, the investments we make, and even simple hygienic choices we make throughout the day. Lesson one is not to overreact or panic: We should take comfort in knowing that in this country our medical expertise, and already in place safeguards, should improve our chances of limiting the overall impact on the nation. Lesson two is that contagions, politics, and finances create the worst possible public reaction.: Election year or not, this is no time for either side to “weaponize” a virus for either political or financial gain. Just like it’s not ok to charge 500% more for an antiviral mask than it was before this virus began to spread, it also not ok to use this virus as an opportunity to score political points. This is a time to unite and work together. Not just in this country but worldwide as we share research and knowledge to defend against major outbreaks that sooner or later could reach our loved ones. Lesson three shows us the risks of outsourcing important raw materials and certain critical production facilities outside the continent: We are just beginning to learn that we may face many shortages in pharmaceutical components and other imported products due to short-sided corporate profiteers. We’ve become far too dependent on China, and from this experience, we should recognize the need to rebalance our manufacturing supply chain practices. Lesson four is basic personal hygiene: We should have known from a young age, and this is that mother was always right about washing our hands and touching our face. Influenza is far more deadly here in the U.S. than COVID-19 yet the best weapon we have for avoiding the spread of it is to wash our hands regularly and avoids rubbing our eyes and touching our faces. All deadly threats are best handled with common sense, a clear-headed approach and transparency. These reactions should come as no surprise to anyone, yet it’s the simple things we’ve learned in the past that are the last things we seem to think about whenever we are faced with something new. Our human frailties cause us to react too slowly when something new surprises us, and we refuse to acknowledge that we need help. To the Editor: In the very near future the residents of Clinton County will probably be tasked to pay for the PILOT grant and loss of a vital parking area for current and future City growth, to include loss of green space. Consider the following: The Prime tax relief, if granted, will also affect the county residents by reducing county tax paid as well as City School taxes. The majority of County, City, and area residents do not want this ill-conceived contentious project which appears to be pushed thru with possible undue influence. The CCIDA serves “at the pleasure of the Clinton County Legislature” with a mission statement so broad this project exceeds the spirit and intent of what is considered “Industrial Development”. The County Administrator is also Secretary of the IDA and one of seven voting members. Said party freely communicates IDA processes to the Legislature, but intervenes to not allow free speech about the IDA and use of tax relief when the public wants to speak to the Legislature. The fact a City Council member pushing the project is also married to the Executive Director of the IDA who favors the project is very disturbing. Is this why the City is prematurely building a new Farmers Market before all Prime’s permits and studies are completed? Is it already a done deal? The loss of the big Parking Lot will have adverse effects on area dwellings and businesses - the plan is not viable for future growth. Consider that the GFN building would be better utilized for health care or offices to produce income. The CCIDA has sponsored previous effective industrial growth. This project, being pushed thru by an apparent dysfunctional City of Plattsburgh, should be rejected as a message to plan and spend wisely. — Geoffrey B. Barker, Plattsburgh ■

Destruction from within
To the Editor: I too remember listening to Radio Free Europe during the Second World War mentioned by Mr. Alexander “The Russians are coming again?” So now the Russians have the ability to talk back. America will never be destroyed from the outside. “If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” This quote is attributed to Abraham Lincoln. The truth of this quote has been illustrated by the Russian story of the last 3 years. Forget Russia. It is time to look at Washington to reveal the enemy from within. What troubles me is Americans refuse to acknowledge the truth of the exposure that the true interference was from within, aka the DNC, not the Russians. This ignorance can be contributed directly to our education system. Another indication of this great system is I have to print my letters to my 14 year old great-grand daughter because she cannot read cursive writing. In 1962 prayer was removed from our school system and now if we want to reference God or use His Word in a letter to the editor, it may not be approved. Next In 1973 abortion was decriminalized. Now the teaching of God has essentially been removed from our society. If Christians remembered they might know you are to love your neighbor as yourself. All we hear today is hatred especially for President Trump. Don’t be surprised if Trump is not reelected. The Bible also tells us of a one world government. Socialism may start that trip in 2021. We all need to pause and rethink what is really important to us and where do we want to spend eternity. This physical life is only temporary. Quoting Mr. Alexander again “we must be capable of recognizing truth from fiction regardless of the source.” — Carl Thomas, Stony Creek ■

While the current virus outbreak is nothing to sneeze at (if you’ll pardon the pun), the best way to fight our collective pandemic fears is armed with accurate information and remaining calm. Especially, don’t be tricked by those individuals or groups making a bad situation even worse by exploiting our fears for some hidden agenda. Financial and business blogger Josh Steimle has penned some wise lay observations about “fear” which deserve repeating here, especially in light of the sometimes hyperbolic news about coronavirus. “Fear exists to keep us safe,” Steimle wrote. “It is not inherently bad or good but a tool we can use to make better decisions... When fear strikes consider whether the correct action might be to analyze the options and make a wise, well thought out choice, rather than jumping to what seems right in the heat of the moment... Embrace fear as instruction and let it inform your actions, but not control them.” Yes, by all means be cautious when it comes to the coronavirus, but first listen to our health experts (and your family physician) before running out to buy the last surgical face mask in town. And just as the British government publicly posted in the darkest days of the London Blitz, “Stay calm and carry on.” — Lou Varricchio, Editor of The Vermont Eagle ■

Today’s version of a pandemic nightmare is the 2020 coronavirus outbreak. Yet when compared to 1918-20, the current outbreak appears rather small: so far, 2,942 deaths are from the cornoavirus, compared to 50 million-plus deaths caused by the Spanish flu. We say this not to diminish the lives of coronavirus victims but to provide perspective and help calm present fears. Why bother? Well, human fear is a powerful force to unleash, especially when it occurs needlessly en masse. At the moment, N-class (and other) surgical face masks are flying off the shelves nationwide. This run-on face masks says a lot about these basic human fears. For example, here in Addison County, Vermont, local drug store staffers are reporting empty shelves; that is, every surgical-style face mask package, regardless of its true effectiveness against a virus, has been sold out within the past few weeks. Ditto, druggists we canvassed via telephone across the lake in New York. On Feb. 29, the U.S. Surgeon General addressed the face mask problem. He Tweeted a stern warning to American citizens about scarfing up the masks: “Seriously people-STOP BUYING MASKS! They are NOT effective in preventing (the) general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!”

DEMOCRATS ENDORSE READ FOR MAYOR roughly $600 per year under his leadership. In a statement following the official endorsement, Read said “It is an honor to again represent the Democrats and all residents of the city of Plattsburgh. I’m incredibly proud of the collaboration of our recent common councilors and am grateful for their willingness to make fiscally responsible decisions. “The city of Plattsburgh has so much potential, and I am glad to see we are on the cusp of realizing so many great things for Plattsburgh.” Read is one of four Democrats seeking the
Give unanimous support to incumbent Read, Ward 2’s Kelly and Ward 5’s McFarlin By Andrea VanValkenburg STAFF WRITER
PL AT TSBURGH | City of Plattsburgh Democrats have given their unanimous support to incumbent Mayor Colin Read. Read earned the official democratic endorsement for the June primary and November general election Tuesday night, along with Ward 2 Councilor Michael Kelly and Ward 5 Rep. Patrick McFarlin. Members of the city’s Democratic Party and community heard from Read and challengers Tenzin Dorjee and Chris Rosenquest prior to the announcement as the candidates laid out their platforms in seeking the endorsement. City democrats said Read’s reversal of perennial budget deficits and success in growing the city’s once-depleted fund

balance helped net him the endorsement. Citing tax roll-backs to pre-fiscal crisis levels and strategies to prevent long-term damage to the city’s infrastructure, democrats said, Read’s work in office has also been recognized with favorable audit reports and improvements in the state comptroller’s measures of the city’s fiscal stress. Democrats say Read’s improvements will save the city millions in bond-interest payments and that expected tax reductions for 2020 and 2021, along with proposed water-rate reductions, are expected to save city residents

For the upcoming November presidential election, many politicians and their “free everything” minions want to paint Capitalism as evil, serving only the wealthy, and Communism/Socialism “social justice” policies as good for all. This simplistic characterization makes it very easy to buffalo an uneducated populace that knows very little about either economic system other than cute bumper sticker clichés such as “Capitalism bad; Socialism good.” Let’s forget the clichés and see what each system provides its citizens. An Ar menian/Russian neighbor just returned from Cuba. Here is what he experienced. Cubans are a happy people. They have free healthcare, free education, free housing, what more could anyone want? Unfortunately, the average income is $25 a month. Upper-income doctors earn $60 a month. Furthermore, the government tells them what jobs suit them best. The only wealthy are the military and high-level government bureaucrats. Plenty of American vintage cars are everywhere because, until recently, American automobiles and parts could not be exported or imported. This is a moot point because, with only $25 a month income, no one can afford anything anyway -- except the wealthy bureaucrats and the military. It’s also very hard to travel anywhere when you earn only $25 a month. The same neighbor also lived in the Bolshevik Soviet Union when it was under Communist rule. After the Soviet Union collapsed, there are still many poor people in Russia, but now there are a lot of billionaire wealth and job creators and, more importantly,

opportunities for the poor to they themselves become wealth and job creators. Contrast this with life in a Capitalist country like the US then ask yourself: Do we want a weak US, where only bureaucrats have any significant wealth, while the low-income demographic striving to achieve the American Dream have no hope whatsoever to achieve that dream because the wealth and job creators that make it all possible left after tax-the-hell-out-of-therich “social justice” policies forced them to leave? Remember “Atlas Shrugged”? Or, do we want a wealthy US, still with a significant, but declining, demographic of low income struggling residents who now, instead of hopeless despair, generally have an OPTIMISTIC outlook for the future with unlimited opportunities for them to achieve the American dream; and become wealth and job creators themselves? I’m reminded of a scene in the movie “Dr. Zhivago,” where Yuri returns to his pre-Bolshevik fiancé’s elegant Tsarist-era home only to find it trashed and several Bolsheviks living there. The area administrator assigns him and his fiancé’s family a living area. Yuri sarcastically tells the official, “Yes, comrade, this is a much better arrangement than before!”. Yes, comrades, America will be a much better place if the uneducated, easily manipulated dependent poor take over; than before, when the capitalists created wealth and jobs. Welcome to a future America, where we hypocritically profess compassion for our poor but take away any hope of, or opportunity for, them to achieve the American dream because the wealth and job creators who make it possible all left! One last point. The next time someone criticizes wealth, ask them if social justice activists, uneducated, easily manipulated, and dependent poor sign your paychecks! ■

Putrid smoke still clung to the air Friday morning as propane tanks lined the property, discarded remnants of the overnight race to fight the flames and further damage. As county fire officials continued to investigate the cause of the blaze, just a charred and collapsed shell of the former deli still stood by morning. LaBarre’s is one of the center’s first established stores and has remained in family hands for several decades. It’s not the first time the store has seen devastation after a fire in the late 1980s left it seriously damaged. After rebuilding, several heavy storms and bouts of flash flooding have ravaged the storefront in the years since. Store owners were visibly distraught as they combed through the rubble and surveyed the damage Friday as traffic on the popular northern route slowed and drivers surveyed the heavily-damaged site across from Northern Adirondack School. The store is owned by Jeffrey Matthews and his family. ■
The landmark LaBarre’s Convenience Store was destroyed by flames late Thursday night. Fire investigators are continuing the investigate the cause. Crews from more than a dozen local fire departments were able to save a nearby home, but the liquor store and deli portion of the property were heavily damaged in the blaze. ROUSES POINT | Zach O’Connell scored just over 1:30 into the second overtime of the Section VII boys hockey semifinal for third seed Saranac to give them a 5-4 win over second seed Northeastern Clinton Feb. 27. O’Connell scored the game-winner on assists from Hayden Buckley and Austin Carpenter. Buckley was a key part of the Chiefs’ offensive attack, helping out on four of the five goals scored. After a scoreless first overtime, O’Connell then scored the game winner, 1:37 into the second extra period, advancing the Chiefs to the sectional final game Monday. After the goal, the Chiefs raced to celebrate with their goalie, Erick Frechette, who made 31 saves in the game for the win.
After scoring a 2-0 shutout win over Plattsburgh High in the quarterfinal round, Beekmantown was unable t slowdown the SLP offense, falling 7-2 Feb. 29, after the game was postponed twice due to inclement weather. SLP took 60 shots in net in the game, with Beekmantown goalie Riley Hansen making 53 saves. Dalton Kane and Collin Latinville each scored for the Eagles, with assists going to Gavin Fessette and Cody Repas. Against the Hornets Feb. 25, Hansen made save in a 2-0 shutout over the Hornets, while Alex Brienza and Dale Gonyo scored.

PL AT TSBURGH | As excited as the Beekmantowm girls team was to win their 11th straight Section VII bowling title, it was the news of an Eagle sweep that started applause and even dancing among the teammates. “I am so happy for them right now,” said Morgan Brunet. “It is exciting to know that both teams will be going to states this year. The Lady eagles scored 5,443 pins to reclaim the title. “I was a little nervous at the start because it was my first year on the main team. My goals were to focus on my mark and trust the things that my coaches and teammates were telling me,” said Abby Fessette. Alexa Sampica said she spent the season just trying to “keep pace” with the team. “Especially Morgan,” Sampica joked. “I have enjoyed the season and I am very excited to be on a team that is going to states.” Kylie Hilborne said she is looking forward to going to states with the new members of the starting team. “It’s going to be awesome going to states with the two newbies so it will be exciting for them and all of us as a team.”
BOYS RALLY FOR WIN The Beekmantown boys varsity bowling team took the Section VII crown away from AuSable Valley Saturday, using a strong sixth game to complete a comeback that saw them in third place heading into the second three games of the day, finishing with a six game score of 5,945. The players said keeping focus was key over the last three games. “We just tried to keep our heads in it and focus — that was pretty much it,” said Troy Reid. “It was a little rough first off but I think we really focused in the afternoon and we got what we felt we deserved,” said Damien Stutsman. Senior Ryley Rafalko said he was happy he could contribute to the program this season. “Being a senior and this being my first year on the starting team I just wanted to bowl my best today,” he said. On the other end, freshman Alex Deso was happy for the upper classmen. “Being a freshman, it feels really special to do this with this team and the seniors who really wanted this win.” Jordan Deyo, the CVAC regular season scoring average leader (214), said it was a tail of two series for him. “This morning I was right on every single ball, but in the second half of the day I was the one who was struggling and the rest of the

After semifinal heartbreaker, Smith rallies for third at state wrestling Christman places seventh, Swyers eighth By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR
ALBANY | Saranac’s Bryce Smith rallied from a tough semifinal defeat at the NYSPHSAA state wrestling tournament Saturday, winning his final two matches of the day to place third at 152lbs. Smith opened with a 3-2 loss to Nick Ross, who used a strong riding game and a two-point reversal in the third period to score the needed points to win. “We had escaped from him before at Eastern States, so we felt we could do it again,” Saranac coach Heath Smith said. “You could tell he has worked on his ground game and he wrestled very tough and got the points he needed.” Smith was also plagued by bleeding near his nose, which caused several stoppages. “That hurt as far as trying to establish anything long term,” said coach Smith. Following the loss, Smith wrestled in the consolation semifinals, scoring a 4-1 decision over Dakota Mascho. In the consolation finals, he trailed Keagen Case, 2-0, before scoring six straight points for an eventual 6-4 win. “He left it all out on the mat,” said coach Smith. “We
changed a couple of things after the semifinal match and he really did well in the final two matches. “I’m proud of the little fella,” Smith, who is also Bryce’s father, added. “He said that he was proud of me and that he loved me,” said Bryce of the final hug he and his father shared on a high school wrestling mat. “It was tough right after the semifinal loss but I eventually told myself if I cannot finish first, I need to wrestle my best and finish third.” Smith said he will look back at his time with the Chiefs fondly. “Its really all about being together with your team and your family,” he said. “I could not have asked for a better team to be a part of, they made it so much fun.”
CHRISTMAN SEVENTH
Saranac teammate Alex Christman started his day with a loss by fall in the consolation quarterfinals at 132, putting him into the seventh place match, where he scored a 5-0 decision over Julian Martin to claim seventh place. “I am so proud of Alex,” said Smith. “It hit me half way through the match that this was my final high school match, and that really pushed me,” said Christman. “It meant a lot to come away with a place finish in my senior year.”
SWYERS EIGHTH
Peru’s Zach Swyers started the day with a loss to Ethan Stoller, putting him in the seventh place match where Nick Pino outscored Swyers, 11-0, to give the Peru junior an eighth
