P’burgh lawyer found dead; city PD investigate Attorney Justin Herzog failed to appear in court By Elizabeth Izzo STA FF W RITER

PLATTSBURGH | Plattsburgh City Police have confirmed that attorney Justin Herzog was found dead in his law office Monday afternoon.

“It is not believed that this is a suspicious death,” City Police Chief Levi Ritter said. Police and EMS responded to Herzog’s office at 5139 U.S. Ave. at 5:35 p.m. yesterday after receiving a report of a “male that was not conscious and not breathing” from an employee of the law office, according to Ritter.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Tuesday morning. City police are investigating. The Clinton County Sheriff ’s Office issued a warrant for the arrest of Herzog Monday. Herzog, 44, failed to appear in court to face multiple felony charges stemming from an alleged domestic violence dispute in February. Police say Herzog was scheduled to appear in court April 8 to be arraigned on one count of second-degree attempted murder and two counts of first-degree burglary, both

class B felonies; one count of second-degree burglary, a class C felony; and first-degree unlawful imprisonment, a class E felony. Police said at the time that he would likely have been driving a 2011 Chevrolet Impala with a license plate that says “ZOGLAW.”

ACCUSED OF STRANGULATION, RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT

Herzog was initially arrested at a Chazy residence in February for allegedly strangling a woman and threatening her, and an unidentified 13-year-old, with a knife. » Herzog Cont. on pg. 2

It created that love for learning.” Her son’s passion for reading was ignited to such a degree, in fact, that they were forced to implement new rules in the house. “We have to take his books out of his bookbag at night,” she said, smiling. “If we don’t, he reads all night.”

FUNDING NEEDED

The Literacy Volunteers of Clinton County asked the county legislature last week to consider contributing $8,000 toward a summer camp designed to help underprivileged children with their reading and writing skills. Photo by Elizabeth Izzo

PLATTSBURGH | Luke struggled to read and write. When he left Kindergarten at Northern Adirondack, educators told local mother Ashley Manor that her 6-yearold son’s literacy skills lagged behind other kids his age. At the time, she worried that he’d be held back in school. She worried about his future. “It was a nightmare, to say the least,” she told the Clinton County Legisla-

ture last week. When she learned that the Literacy Volunteers of Clinton County hosted an educational literacy camp for kids each year — a program now seeking $8,000 from the legislature to keep the camp going — she was skeptical. “I was pessimistic that literacy camp would improve his skills in that short amount of time,” she said. But she witnessed a transformation over the span of the two-week program. Suddenly, her son was fi lled with enthusiasm about reading and writing. “He woke up in the morning wanting

Linda Carela, the director of the Literacy Volunteers of Clinton County, said that the group hopes to help more children like Manor’s son. For the last six years, the program has been funded by tuition costs and SUNY Plattsburgh’s Literacy Education program. “The deactivation of that program has put us in a position of seeking outside funding in order to keep camp affordable for families,” said Jean Ann Hunt, president of the Literacy Volunteers of Clinton County board. Every year, Clinton County doles out tobacco settlement money to community projects. This year, the Literacy Volunteers are asking for $8,000 to help fund their summer program, a two-week camp designed to foster a love for reading and writing by aiding children and adults alike with developing their literacy skills. » Funding Cont. on pg. 2

Mooers Free Library vies for funding Library reps eye park, community garden area By Elizabeth Izzo STA FF W RITER

PLATTSBURGH | Representatives of the Mooers Free Library are seeking funding for a proposed park and community garden. Tim Gonyo, president of the Mooers Free Library Board of Trustees, asked the Clinton County Legislature last week to consider granting the library $10,000 toward the development of a piece of property outside their School Street building.

“We want to create greenspace — create a little park there and have raised beds for a community garden,” Gonyo told The Sun. “We want to put in seating for families, and a nice gazebo so we can do some outdoor education.” Altogether, the project is expected to cost roughly $20,000, according to Gonyo. The $10,000 ask would supplement $7,000 from the sale of the library’s previous location on Route 11, along with $3,000 from its ongoing memorial brick fundraiser. “Once we get the funding, we’re looking at this being a spring-summer project,” Gonyo said. The library’s request was one of nine submitted to the Clinton County Legislature for consideration last week.

Every year, the legislature doles out tobacco settlement funding for community-level projects. The nine applications submitted asked for a total of $113,000, according to Deputy County Administrator Rodney Brown. County Administrator Michael Zurlo said that as much as $89,000 in funding is available. Legislators were expected to decide which projects would receive funding on April 10, after this edition went to print. ■
