year’s Mayor’s Cup course was shortened due to the bad weather; however, the sky ended up clearing and the sun was shining. After the three divisions — racing, cruising and multi-haul — wrapped up by 6 p.m., the awards ceremony took place at the Naked Turtle.

Bass Fishing, Costa up next for FLW on Lake Champlain
Common Council agrees to form master plan for city
Community outreach among tour goals
‘WEEKEND ANGLERS’
“Fresh off this weekend’s FLW Tour event, Lake Champlain is set for more FLW tournament-fishing action,” a press release from FLW said. The FLW offered tips and a prediction. “Anglers in this BFL tournament will again have to choose between targeting largemouth, smallmouth, or both. For those chasing largemouth, working a ChatterBait around scattered milfoil, a crankbait around sparse grass and rocks, or a swim jig near lily pads and reeds around Ticonderoga (as FLW Tour champion Casey Scanlon did) will likely be a good bet. Swimbaits, jerkbaits and drop-shot rigs should entice smallmouth, especially near rocks and points. Five bass in the 20-pound range should be enough to take home top honors at this mid-July BFL derby.” The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit “devoted to weekend anglers,” with 128 tournaments throughout the season, with five qualifying events in each division. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

City financial plan will include DRI projects
PLATTSBURGH | Lake Champlain will be alive with anglers hoping for the big prize as the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) returns to Plattsburgh for a pair of events. The FLW’s Bass Fishing League (BFL) tournament season continues Saturday, July 13, with a T-H Marine tournament presented by Navionics. The tournament — hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau — is the third event of 2019 in the Northeast Division. Up to 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively, in the one-day tournament. Takeoff is set for 6 a.m., with weigh-in scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Plattsburgh City Marina, 5 Dock St., Plattsburgh.

PLATTSBURGH | Adopted by the Plattsburgh Common Council on a majority vote, the idea of a master plan for the city, which will cover all projects, including the DRI plans, and ideas the council has for the future of Plattsburgh was approved July 3. This will map out a timeline for the city and gives a higher chance of being approved for grants in the future. “The City of Plattsburgh is committed to securing funding to develop a coordinated, comprehensive plan for Harborside,” the council read from the agenda. “Funds are available to support a Master Plan through the 2019 New York State Consolidated Funding Application through the New York State Department of State’s (DOS) Local Waterfront Revitalization Funds to support such activities. The City of Plattsburgh is aware of the match required by DOS and agrees to provide the funding and the oversight to execute the grant according to the timeline outlined in the application; City of Plattsburgh Mayor Colin Read is hereby authorized and directed to accept funds from, and enter into, and execute a project agreement with the State for such financial assistance for the City of Plattsburgh.” The deadline for the master plan is the end of July. After that, it will take a few to six months for the contract to be finalized, along with another year to complete a full study. By the summer of 2021, the council expects to have access to grants for the projects covered in the master plan. The farmers market relocation will be included in the master plan as an “anchor” for the application. » Common council Cont. on pg. 11

‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ visits Plattsburgh Barber shop staff gets signed soap opera merch By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STA FF W RITER
PLATTSBURGH | The Plattsburgh Plaza Barber Shop is known for more than their all-female staff and killer cosmetology skills. In fact, to some, the barber shop isn’t that at all, but instead, a fan club for the CBS 32-year-running soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful.” “March 23, 1987, was the first episode of ‘The Bold and the Beautiful,’ so it’s been going for 32 years,” Stanley Ransom told The Sun. “All those people in their tangles and their love affairs and everything else, all for 32 years.” Word of the popularity spread through Ransom to his son-in-law, Anthony Ferari, the senior vice president of CBS, which produces the show. “I noticed that from 1:30 to 2, everything kind of stopped and everyone watched (the show,)” Ransom said. “People came from around the neighborhood and other stores and watched it also.” As a gesture of recognition for the loyalty of the barber shop’s continuing viewership, Ferari and his team sent the Plattsburgh Plaza Barber Shop loads of “The Bold and the Beautiful” merchandise. This included a variety of small items,
The women of the Plattsburgh Plaza Barber shop were ecstatic to receive signed photos from the cast of “The Bold and the Beautiful,” as well as their own t-shirts and other small items. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris pictures and t-shirts, as well as a signed headshot of the show’s Darin Brooks and a large photo signed by the entire cast. A surprise to most of the staff there, the merchandise was uncovered at the barber shop Tuesday, July 2. The unveiling of it all was met with laughter and applause from the rest of the women, who were excited to grab as much as they could.
The Plaza Barber Shop has been in business for 77 years, since 1942, and has always been located at 16 Plattsburgh Plaza. Though it’s women owned and run, they tend to both men and women. The summer hours for the barber shop are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ■

OptumFitness Program may come to Plattsburgh Common council discusses possible rebate system By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STA FF W RITER
PLATTSBURGH | The City of Plattsburgh’s Common Council has voted to integrate the OptumHealth Fitness Passport Program into Plattsburgh. The fitness system, which costs nothing extra for those with gym memberships, tracks the amount of times and people who go to the gym. The amount of people, and number of times they go during the week/month, determines a rebate the city will receive. The cost to the city is a payment to track current activity and send in gym data. The data has already been tracked automatically, according to council. All that needs to be done is collect it and send it in; the cost of the charge wasn’t specified.
The idea of the program is to motivate residents of the town or city participating to work out at the gym more, as it will benefit the city as a whole. “It’s essentially a program whereby the usage of the city gym lights membership is tracked by this fitness passport program,” Director of Community Development Matthew Miller said during the meeting. “The more people who use the gym on a regular basis, the city gets rewarded with essentially a rebate for the people who use the gym more than once a month or once a week.” A couple of members on the council were skeptical, as there is no clear financial motive for the company. The OptumHealth Fitness Passport Program passed on a majority vote. ■ For the city to receive a higher rebate from OptumHealth, members of the gym will have to go more often during the week. This is the general idea of the program, to get people to work out more, but the council was unsure how OptumHealth is benefiting financially. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris

IANELLI AWARDS: Following the Mayor’s Cup BBQ at the Naked Turtle, the Plattsburgh Air
Park Restoration Group received this year’s “Spirit of Ianelli” Award, a tradition that started nine years ago in honor of the late former mayor John Ianelli, who co-founded the Mayor’s Cup. The honor was a thank you to the hard work the group puts in to restoring the historical aircraft located in the old military district. Made up of about 15 Air Force veterans, the group of volunteers put in more than 1,700 hours on the FB-111, B-47 and the mini FB-111 that is located at the Clyde Lewis Air Park. The group got up to accept their award, as well as give a short speech on what their volunteer work means to them. “We’re a core group that you see up here, but probably another 20 or so veterans and retiree members that have all contributed throughout the months we worked on the aircraft,” one of the volunteers said. “We encourage you all to come out and take a look at the aircrafts.” The group of veterans received the award at the Naked Turtle at the Plattsburgh Boat Basin. They were introduced by Councilman Mike Kelly and were grateful to be recognized for their efforts.

Plattsburgh man dies in motorcycle collision in Chesterfield CHESTERFIELD | A crash between a truck and motorcycle left a Plattsburgh man dead this week. On July 7, 2019, at approximately 9:46 a.m., State Police responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a pickup truck and motorcycle at the intersection of State Route 9 and State Route 22, in the Town of Chesterfield. An investigation revealed that a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Mark E. Steeves, 50, of Colchester, Connecticut, was traveling west on State Route 22 while a 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by Richard L. Mitchell, 72, of Plattsburgh, was traveling south on State Route 9. Police said Steeves’ vehicle failed to stop at a red light and drove
through the intersection striking Mitchell and ejecting him from his motorcycle. Mitchell was pronounced dead at the accident site by Essex County Coroner Walter S. Marvin at 11:10 a.m. Marvin authorized the body be removed by Hamilton’s Funeral Home to the University of Vermont Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, where an autopsy determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to multiple organs and skeletal systems due to a motor vehicle accident. Marvin determined the manner of death to be accidental. Steeves and his passenger, Michelle L. Steeves, 48, were not injured. This crash remains under investigation. ■

the workday. The risk was high, but unlike Vladimir, whose mother was able to secure additional food rations for him, Kitty’s family had no one outside the camp to send additional provisions and the inadequate rations took a toll on her family’s health. Her brother would contract tuberculosis and her father struggled with kidney and heart problems.

A SERIOUS OFFENSE
Vladimir remembers meeting Kitty in the spring of 1943. “The warmer weather brought groups of boys and girls out on the promenade,” Munk said. Kitty was, by his account, skipping down the street in a shirt she had just fashioned from a flour sack, proud of her handiwork. He noticed her and shouted out to catch her attention. The rest, as they say, is history. “When we started to date, we would hold hands and talk about what we liked to eat.” Cultural events, including theater, music and lectures took place daily at Terezin, conducted in Czech, and were opportunities to forget, however briefly, about the harsh conditions in the camp. “You could pretend that you lived a normal life as a free person in a free society,” Munk said. Adults and youth alike would wear their best clothing, walk freely in the evenings and attend events until curfew. “I can’t say that I enjoyed it, but I was 18 at the time. I was young, for me it was an adventure,” Munk said. “It was my first girlfriend. We had a lot of fun.” Having given up all their belongings, including jewelry, upon arrival at the camp, a custom arose within the camp of making charms from metal that had been melted down. The most popular themes were the numbers of the transport on which a person had arrived at Terezin and the coat of arms of Theresienstadt. Vladimir made charms for Kitty in the locksmith shop where he worked with the number of her special transport to Terezin, Ez201, the coat of arms and other small items.
Kitty Lowi sits with her brother, Hanus Lowi in 1936.
The metal coat of arms charm of Terezin made by Vladimir Munk for Kitty.
was born in February of 1925 in Pardubice, a city 60 miles east of Prague, the capital of present-day Czech Republic. On Dec. 6, 1942, 606 Jews living in the city were deported to Terezin, a small military town converted to a Jewish ghetto and concentration camp. Many Jews were later sent from Terezin to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the extermination camp operated by Nazi Germany. They were either sent to the gas chambers there or used as slave labor in one of the 40 Auschwitz satellite camps, where they ultimately died of hunger and disease. Only 46 Jews from Pardubice survived. Vladimir was one of them. He currently lives in Plattsburgh. This is Vladimir’s story. ■
It was difficult for the young lovers to find privacy in a camp overflowing with people. “We discovered that five or 10 minutes before the 8 o’clock curfew, the streets began to empty and we could have some privacy,” Munk said. One evening, in June of 1944, as they lingered a few minutes past eight in the doorway of Kitty’s house, a police officer in civilian clothing approached them and asked for their identity papers. Vladimir’s job in the locksmith shop allowed him special permission to come and go around the camp to make repairs after curfew, but Kitty had no such privilege. She was “requested” to appear at the Juvenile Court of Theresienstadt where curfew violations were not taken lightly. Anyone charged with an offense was at risk of being sent to Auschwitz. Although her family felt certain the charge would be dismissed, it would take weeks for the court to convene and they had to protect Kitty from deportation during that time. They decided to pretend that she had meningitis, an infectious disease that at the time was impossible to prove or disprove. She was locked in the infirmary in a private room and remained there until she was pardoned by the internal Jewish Court of Elders. “I would stay under her window and talk to her while she was in the hospital,” Munk said. “Her father was extremely angry with her. She was a month short of turning sixteen and due to her minor status, she had put him at risk as well.”
THE LIQUIDATION OF TEREZIN
Successful offenses mounted by the Russians caused the Germans to panic, fearing an uprising in the ghetto. Munk speculates that not only the Jewish elders but also the Germans knew of the underground movement, of which his father was a part, that stood poised to revolt. “By sending 20,000 able inhabitants of Terezin to Auschwitz in one month, the Germans successfully liquidated the underground movement.” Kitty and Vladimir said their goodbyes. They were certain the Germans would lose the war and vowed to meet in Prague at Vladimir’s aunt’s apartment after the war. Vladimir and his father were sent to Auschwitz in the third transport, on Oct. 1, 1944 under the guise of building another labor camp. If only that had been the truth. — This is the latest chapter of Vladimir’s story. See suncommunitynews.com for the previous installments. ■

Students are assisting the Chancellor’s Award recipient and associate professor in the Center for Earth and Environmental Science aboard one of the Lake Champlain Research Institute’s vessels, placing buoys on the lake that record such data as air temperature, pressure, sunlight, wind and water temperature. Data collected will help determine the effects of global warming on the lake and its environs. “To be able to take part in the field work necessary to collect data for research has been a great experience, and I believe it will help me further in my career as I enter the workforce,” environmental science major Jared Kondas said. It’s given the senior from Stillwater a better understanding of what goes on in the field, which isn’t always easy to do in the classroom. “The experience working with Eric and launching the buoys that monitor lake conditions helped me see more in depth into the fieldwork side of my major and what jobs may be expecting from me in the future. I’m grateful for the opportunity to participate in the research because of its real-world application.” “Students collect data, help with the lake project,” Leibensperger said. “They’re the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the project, putting out the buoys, making sure the lines are secure, learning the machinery of research. This is where they’re able to take what is discussed in the classroom and apply it. They’re learning how it’s actually done. “In the lab, they’ll look at the data that’s collected, analyze it and write computer scripts to better understand what the data is showing us,” he said. “That’s the whole point of bringing students out into the field — to help them find the connection.”
INITIATED INVOLVEMENT IN CLIMATE RESEARCH
Grace DeSantis, a 2017 environmental science graduate and Chancellor’s Award for Excellence recipient, worked with Leibensperger during her time at the college, collecting lake water and air samples. DeSantis, who is pursuing a masters in urban planning and an advanced certificate in sustainability from the University of Buffalo. After collecting samples, they returned to the lab to determine at what rate and in what direction the exchange of carbon was going from the lake into the air or from the air into the lake. “In other words, we wanted to know if the lake was a carbon sink or a carbon source and whether or not its role

decreased — the polar bear has become the poster child for climate change for a reason. This is all a symptom. “And when my students ask me if there is hope, I say yes, there is hope. The biggest hope, and the most inspiring part of all of this is our students, our young people,” Leibensperger said. “They want to change the world. They still have the ambition and desire. I see their wanting to take on these problems; our children are always our best asset.”

changes seasonally,” DeSantis said. “Since carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change, this information can inform lake management and climate mitigation strategies. Working on this project initiated my involvement in climate research, an activity that I have continued beyond my undergraduate experience. I’ve been able to expand upon the knowledge and skills from the Lake Champlain carbon flux research in my current research on urban microclimates and climate-change planning.” “The temperature of the planet is going up; and we know it’s caused by humans,” Leibensperger said. “And we’re seeing it all over the world. Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
America the beautiful
I wonder at times if Americans have gotten too caught up in the current day hustle and bustle of life to reflect By Dan Alexander on what a great country • PUBLISHER • we are privileged to call home. There have been many societies down through the ages that took for granted all the benefits they had built over the years and ultimately lost their way. At some point, we each have to take stock in what we have and what we expect from our individual and collective efforts as well as those from our government, charged with maintaining and building a foundation for the nation. National optimism seems to have taken a back seat these days to finger-pointing. Nearly every major community around the nation has a July Fourth celebration, so why shouldn’t there be one in Washington? From the moment it was announced by the president that there would be a Fourth of July event, in the nation’s capital, the nay-sayers for Trump’s Fourth of July Event were non-stop, before, during and after the event. It’s a shame that on this special day, the nation couldn’t put political differences aside and celebrate arm-in-arm. The event wasn’t a political rally, it was All-American celebration, but both sides ginned it up, and it sadly became just another political football. I strongly doubt in the future there will be much talk about what’s right with America and what a great nation we are blessed to call our home. That’s what I see at the root of our national discontentment. We spend far too much time defining our political differences and not nearly enough time celebrating our freedoms and our ordinary citizens who go about their business each day, raising families, building lives and making their version of the American dream a reality. Opportunity is all around us if we just open our eyes and take time to smell the roses. The nation is full of beautiful landscapes, magnificent cities, wonderful hospitals and creative, talented and generous people who give so much of themselves. It’s uplifting just to be in their company and hear their stories. We should spend more time focused on the positives we see around us, the debt we owe to those who gave birth to this great nation and most of all those who fight daily to protect us and preserve the freedoms we value. America has much to be proud of, but it’s up to us to recognize her beauty and share that optimism with those around us. ■

I kicked off my tour with local highway superintendents in the towns of Beekmantown, Schuyler Falls and Plattsburgh, followed by rides and discussions with highway and town supervisors of Burke, Bellmont and Chateaugay in Franklin County. I’ve also visited the northern Clinton County towns of Champlain, Chazy and Mooers, and I plan to visit the remaining towns in my district throughout the summer. To help repair and replace the North Country’s roads and bridges, I fought for a 2019-20 state budget that provides $438.1 million for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPs) and $39.7 million for the Marchiselli Program. These programs help municipalities to complete much-needed road and bridge maintenance projects. Additionally, during the final weeks of the 2019 legislative session, I helped secure $65 million in Extreme Winter Recovery funding. North Country families are no strangers to the harsh conditions that winter weather can bring, and these funds will offer critical relief to our communities.
but it seems they are more for adults and not for kids. Maybe there could be something included for kids? There could be something that the parents can point out to their kids (for example: “Hey, look at this” so the kid can see it). Thanks! - Tom Crik, Chestertown ■

While major thoroughfares get the most attention, maintaining local infrastructure is just as important. A 2017 report from the Office of the State Comptroller showed that town-owned bridges are more likely to be structurally deficient than bridges owned by other local entities, especially in rural towns. Last summer, the families who live on Cold Brook Road in Saranac experienced this firsthand when the Cold Brook Bridge was unexpectedly shut down due to structural deficiencies. The emergency closure forced 18 families to resort to an incredibly bumpy 25-minute detour that significantly increased commute times, put families at risk due to potentially delayed emergency services

concerns. I have learned much from our discussions regarding the needs of our local municipalities. Throughout the year, local highway departments are busy repairing pavement, guide rails, bridges, drainage systems and traffic signs as well as removing litter and debris. In the winter months, local highway crews are out day and night, plowing and de-icing local roads, to ensure safety for the traveling public.

The great golf drive A dear friend from high school now resides in Florida with her husband and they spend several months “up North” during the summer. She and I make sure to get together as often as possible for lunch during these By Jan Gosselin short months. • COLUMNIST • Recently on a beautiful sunny day — we have finally gotten a few of those after a rather chilly spring — I mentioned that I had heard great things about a restaurant/golf club in Port Kent and suggested that we go there. Most definitely for the restaurant, not the golf club as neither of us are golfers. She got directions from someone familiar with the location and we were on our way. First clue that we might be in trouble - we were driving south on Route 9 and her directions advised a right turn. Knowing that Port Kent was between Lake Champlain and Route 9, I ignored the “right turn” instruction and took a left on a road I was not familiar with. Doing my best to comply with my friend’s directions, I tried to take a “left after a right jog,” which brought us to a dead end street. No golf course here! Retracing our tracks, we managed to locate several more dead-ends. At this point, we felt more like mice in a maze than friends looking for a nice lunch. We
decided to have a “do over,” returning to Route 9. Driving straight in without any “jogs,” I thought we finally had it. Her next direction to “Go over the railroad tracks” stopped me in mine. We were within 15 feet of the lake with the tracks between us and the lake … not driving over those. So, made a U-turn and headed back the way we came. Aha! I just remembered that I have a GPS on my phone and perhaps I should try that! Wow — my phone says we are 6 minutes from the course. A bit more driving indicates we are now 9 minutes away — what kind of GPS time machine are we traveling in? Another U-turn. Directions sadly bring us back to the road near the lake and railroad track that we have already visited. Somehow now the phone indicates that we are just a couple of minutes from the golf course! Suddenly my friend said, “You just went by a sign with the restaurant’s name on it.” So, U-turn No. 3 brought me to a somewhat faded sign that, indeed, had the right name on it, along with a map of building lots available. There was no mention of a restaurant or golf course but the word “Harmony” is what we had been looking for so it must be the right place. Excitedly, we make what we hope is our final turn.
The road leading us up past the sign was gravel, narrow and one-way. My friend commented on the existence of large stones on either side of the road that ensured that only one vehicle could get through at a time (and it best not be too big). Such a strange thoroughfare leading us to what we understand is a fine restaurant. While enjoying the slow ride across beautiful, rolling hills and gentle curves, we finally saw the restaurant in the distance. Upon reaching the “summit,” it became obvious that my bright red Camry was definitely out of place and we were truly lucky no one needed the road while we were traversing it. I am pretty certain that my car and a golf cart (the intended use of our little path) would not have been a good fit. Who knew there was a fourth option for one’s GPS — will you be driving, walking, taking a bus or utilizing a golf cart? We calmly drove through the sea of golf carts to the sounds of “Fore!” in the background, as we made our way to a lovely lunch amidst uncontrollable laughter from us and strange looks from others standing outside. ■ — Jan Gosselin retired from NYSDOCS after 25 years of service. But the cold, hard facts show that the climate is changing, and they’re going to have to believe it sooner or later.” “While the drive to do work related to climate change began as a result of studying environmental science at SUNY Plattsburgh, I think what really has fueled me is the realization that climate change is already impacting communities,” DeSantis said. “Right now, my work in the arena of climate change is mostly focused on urban environments and the spatial, demographic, and built environment factors that drive people’s experiences of the climate. “Not everyone is impacted in the same way by extreme heat, cold and other weather-related events — factors such as loca-
Appreciation for water system support
To the Editor: This is a letter of thanks and appreciation to Derek Fleury and others in Ticonderoga water department for their efforts in solving a problem for us. Thirty years ago, when our well inexplicably dried up, I got permission to hook up to the village’s (at the time) water system. Over the years, as people built houses around us, they also used this line. We now have five families on it. Unfortunately, the line runs under a small creek. This has led to leaks that have resulted in costly repairs. We were dealing with yet another leak when Derek came up with a solution. He worked long and hard to help us out. The process turned out to be much more complicated than expected. He and Supervisor Giordano worked through the problems with us and got the job done. Once again, I am reminded of the advantages of living in a small town where friends and neighbors help each other. Thanks again to Derek for making this happen. - Doren Rockhill, Ticonderoga ■

“We have solutions,” Leibensperger said. “It’s tough, but we have to take heart in the environmental successes we have had,” he said. “Climate change is one of the biggest challenges humans will have to tackle, but we’ve made significant improvements in air quality; the hole in the ozone layer was initially a problem and we’ve solved that with the Montreal Protocol. We all signed it and came together. We’ve ID’d the problem; we have our goals; now we have to focus on how to reach them.” ■

‘The most rewarding experience’ By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR
BEEKMANTOWN | As the AuSable Valley unified basketball team took to the court, a familiar face to the basketball sidelines in Section VII was on their bench. Coach Jamie Douglass has been the head coach of the boys varsity team at AuSable for many years, with a coaching career that includes a trip to the Class C final four not only as a coach, but also as a player. But having the chance to coach the unified team, a program developed through NYSPHSAA and Special Olympics New York, has been “rewarding” to him and those involved in the program.

It is a breath of fresh air.” “I have been coaching for a very long time and I can honestly say this is the favorite team I have ever coached,” Peru coach Chris Burdash said. “The most important thing is seeing them smile every time down the court.” Plattsburgh High’s Haley Feazelle and Kyle LaBrake, along with Alexandra Smith and Kendra McCoy of Ti, have been there from the beginning of the Section VII program. “The teams are growing,” Feazelle said. “We are filling full
rosters and are able to sub five-for-five. It’s really a great program.” “The growth and support we have seen from the communities have been great,” added LaBrake. “It is a unique opportunity where you look forward to seeing the other coaches and the other teams. It is a unified sport but I feel everyone who takes part in it is unified in purpose and you are cheering for both teams on the court. There are so many life lessons they are learning from teamwork, empathy, sportsmanship and more.” “One of the things about unified has been bringing these kids together,” Smith said. “They do not typically hang out with each other, get to play sports with each other or interact with each other. Now, not only are they doing that on their own teams but they are building relationships with other kids on other teams and they are respecting each other on the court and getting to know everyone, which is good to see from returning players.” “It’s life changing all around,” McCoy said. “Life changing for the players, life changing for the coaches and the fans — just life changing for everybody.” “I think that shows you that these people are pro-kids and they are pro-education and they understand what role this plays in a school,” Robert Sutphen, Section VII unified coordinator, said about the coaches in the section. “It brings kids into a school-wide community who otherwise would not play a high school sport or may not do anything else at school. These are kids who a lot of times get on the bus and go home at the end of the school day. Seeing that change and seeing that people want to get involved shows that these coaches are more about winning on Friday or Tuesday night in just the sport they coach. They understand the value of sports and what these kids want.” ■ — This story is part three in a series on unified basketball in Section VII, which also appears in the most recent edition of North Country Living, published by Sun Community News and Printing.

Photo by Keith Lobdell “This is probably the most rewarding experience,” Douglass said. “These kids have come so far and you go home with a smile on your face every night with what we get to do. I have as big of a smile at these games as I did when we went to the final four.” Saranac Lake coach Will Ellsworth has also been on some of the biggest stages in the state, taking the Red Storm hockey team to the final four. “This is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had as a coach in basketball,” he said. “They teach me something new every day we are together. You see something new every game out of the kids. It is fun to see kids do things that surprise us and surprise themselves.” For all of the coaches who have been part of the unified basketball program, the experience has been a defining one. “It has become more competitive while maintaining the sense of selflessness and the kids who are here and involved want to be here and involved with the team. It is just amazing,” Saranac coach Jaclyn Carter said. “It has been a life-changing experience,” AuSable coach Stephanie Murphy said. “It reminds you of what sports is

» Common council Cont. from pg. 1 “The long-term concept is to complete the master plan with a series of projects that can be, over the next four or five years with additional grant money, completed one piece at a time,” Director of Community Development Matthew Miller said. “So creating vision and then implementing it piece by piece.” Though it wasn’t unanimous, voted no by councilors Gibbs and McFarlin, the council agreed to the master plan, which will be constructed immediately and handed in by the end of the month. Talk of the 2020 mayor’s budget made its way into the meeting during the finance and budget committee update by Chair Councilor Mike Kelly. Each committee is expected to meet to weigh in on the budget, as well as submit their own proposed budget cuts and weigh-ins on the upcoming mayor’s budget. ■

NOT JUST FISHING
The economic impact of the fishing tournaments on Lake Champlain is well documented. But often the anglers do more than fish while in town. During the recent FLW Tour event, community outreach was arranged at the University of Vermont Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh. FLW Tour pros visited and shared stories with patients, guests, fans and staff prior to the start of the tournament. They snapped photos, signed autographs and gave out goodie bags. “Hosting the FLW Tournament is a real honor for our community and we’re fortune that these professionals take the time to visit,” Kerry Haley, executive director of the Foundation at CVPH, told The Sun.
“Having them here was a real treat.” Other efforts included a Unified Fishing Derby, where FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley and other FLW Tour anglers helped area Special Olympics athletes 18 and younger catch bass. An FLW Expo provided the opportunity to meet some of the top tour pros to discuss fishing tips, techniques and stories. Interactive activities and games were available, including a casting pond, fishing demos and more.
COSTA EVENT NEXT
The following weekend is the Costa FLW Series Northern Division event on Lake Champlain, set for July 18-20. Take-off is at 6 a.m. all three days at the Plattsburgh City Marina. Weigh-in will be from 2-6 p.m. each day at the same location. The Costa event is also hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau. AU SABLE FORKS| The Adirondack community of Au Sable Forks will again become a hotbed for softball action this weekend as it hosts the 57th-annual Au Sable Forks Fastpitch Tournament. The weekend starts Friday, July 12, with an opening ceremony at Billy Mitchell Memorial Field, with the festivities to begin at 6:30 p.m. with the dedication of the tournament to Mary Claire Smythe and Stephanie Snow for their years of outstanding volunteer service to the success of this annual event. Games begin at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, with games throughout the day Saturday, July 13, and Sunday, July 14. Two local teams will compete in the tournament, including the Gordon 101 Brewers, playing first in the 7 p.m. game July 12, led by local standout Andrew Bombard on the mound who has struck out 71 batters in 68 innings so far this season. The Brewers are also well stacked on the offensive side, too, being led by Kodi Gordon with a .447 batting average with six home runs and 14 RBI; Josh Douglass with a .308
average; A.J. Gordon (.250) and Bombard (.342). In addition, the roster includes local standouts Kyle Nolan, Adam Coolidge, Ryan Evens, Bernie Laduke, John Mussen, Eric Rock, Brandon Snow, Kelly Gordon, T.J. Burl and Mason Dubay. The Brewers will be managed by Scott Bombard. The second team, the Au Sable Forks Merchants, will play in the 9 p.m. July 12 game. Their lineup includes local players Mike Furnia, Tyler Santa Maria, Dalton McDonald, Mike McDonald, Marcus Lafebve, Alex Santa Maria, Austin Depo, Zac Shaw, Kody Shaw, Greg Musk, Nate Craig and U.S. Olympian Jayson Terdiman. The Merchants will be co-managed by Tom Mousseau and Pat Santa Maria. “Some of the best fast-pitch players in the world will be competing for over $3,400 in prize money and awards,” said Randy Douglas, former chair and current media liaison for the tournament. “Also, the 2019 Au Sable Forks Tournament winner will win an entry to the 2020 ISC World Championships in Moline, Ill. “Adam Coolidge, in his third year as the tournament director, and his volunteer committees have shown a lot of dedication in keeping this world-known festival alive and well.” For more information, call 518-569-3582. ■
When your family suffers a loss, we want to help you let your friends and neighbors know. Each week we will publish a list of Death Notices at no charge. These notices will include name, date of death & birth, age, town and the name of the funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Like most newspapers, we do need to charge a small fee of $65 for a 250-word obituary which will include a picture (if supplied) in the paper. Larger sizes are also available. If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.
