Prime displayed the architect’s rendition of the future multi-use building at the open house Aug. 21. According to Prime, a lot of suggestions that came from the public regarded the look of the building. By surveying downtown, Prime used specific architectural traits that repeat itself
to blend into downtown better. “The initial feedback talked about the building being flat on both sides - there’s no relief,” a representative said. “We asked the architect, ‘Can you add some relief?’” See DURKEE UPDATE » pg. 3
Prime Companies, LLC, which is the planning of the Durkee Street lot redevelopment, was there with representation. There has been backlash from some residents over the multi-use building Prime is going to build over the 289-spot parking lot. The building, which will have five stories, is going to use the first floor as commercial space, apartments above that and an underground garage below the building. The back of the building, however, will have four stories. “It’s considered a mezzanine level, so construction-wise it’s four story plus a mezzanine,” Vice President of Prime Companies, LLC Todd Curley explained. “We reduced the amount of apartment units and commercial space based on some feedback and trying to incorporate more parking on-site.” See OPEN HOUSE » pg. 3
Code Enforcement Committee makes requests More police presence urged during the semester By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER
PLATTSBURGH | The City of Plattsburgh Livable Communities Committee’s Code Enforcement Subcommittee made a presentation in front of the council during the Public Safety meeting on Aug. 22. The code enforcement committee seeks modifications that can be made throughout the city through standards Plattsburgh has to meet. The committee also creates new code requests to better meet the needs of residents.
Two requests: Code enforcement committee member Art deGrandpre gave a presentation in front of the city council to express the concerns of members regarding vandalism and destruction by students. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris
An issue brought up by member Art deGrandpre was that of the deteriorating rental properties in Plattsburgh. According to deGrandpre, around 63 percent of properties in the city are rentals, and many rental properties are resided in by students. With the fall semester starting up again, the fear of property destruction is a main concern, as over the years, residential homes have become worse. See CODE ENFORCEMENT » pg. 3
