PERU | Recent graduate of Peru High School Dalton Criss, who died Aug. 20, was remembered for his kindness, love for sports and being a part of a respected and loving family. Criss, 18, was driving in the car with his mother, Barbara Criss, 55, who was in intensive care at the University of Vermont Health Center in Burlington, Dalton Criss Photo provided Vt. She was reported to be in stable condition. Dalton, 18, is the son of SUNY Plattsburgh professor Dexter Criss, who is also the conductor of the college’s Gospel Choir. Dalton was a successful football player and wrestler for Peru High School, winning the Section VII title in the 285-pound class his junior and senior years.

PLATTSBURGH | After the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) open house, Prime Companies, LLC gave a presentation to the planning board. The representatives there talked about what they heard from residents at the open house, as well as gave an update on the project.

Prime displayed the architect’s rendition of the future multi-use building at the open house Aug. 21. According to Prime, a lot of suggestions that came from the public regarded the look of the building. By surveying downtown, Prime used specific architectural traits that repeat itself

to blend into downtown better. “The initial feedback talked about the building being flat on both sides - there’s no relief,” a representative said. “We asked the architect, ‘Can you add some relief?’” See DURKEE UPDATE » pg. 3

Prime Companies, LLC, which is the planning of the Durkee Street lot redevelopment, was there with representation. There has been backlash from some residents over the multi-use building Prime is going to build over the 289-spot parking lot. The building, which will have five stories, is going to use the first floor as commercial space, apartments above that and an underground garage below the building. The back of the building, however, will have four stories. “It’s considered a mezzanine level, so construction-wise it’s four story plus a mezzanine,” Vice President of Prime Companies, LLC Todd Curley explained. “We reduced the amount of apartment units and commercial space based on some feedback and trying to incorporate more parking on-site.” See OPEN HOUSE » pg. 3

Code Enforcement Committee makes requests More police presence urged during the semester By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

PLATTSBURGH | The City of Plattsburgh Livable Communities Committee’s Code Enforcement Subcommittee made a presentation in front of the council during the Public Safety meeting on Aug. 22. The code enforcement committee seeks modifications that can be made throughout the city through standards Plattsburgh has to meet. The committee also creates new code requests to better meet the needs of residents.

Two requests: Code enforcement committee member Art deGrandpre gave a presentation in front of the city council to express the concerns of members regarding vandalism and destruction by students. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris

An issue brought up by member Art deGrandpre was that of the deteriorating rental properties in Plattsburgh. According to deGrandpre, around 63 percent of properties in the city are rentals, and many rental properties are resided in by students. With the fall semester starting up again, the fear of property destruction is a main concern, as over the years, residential homes have become worse. See CODE ENFORCEMENT » pg. 3

Prime presents PUD to Zoning Board Project requests street- edge design By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

SUNY Plattsburgh welcomes back students

Moving into renovated dorms: SUNY Plattsburgh students have moved in over the weekend for the fall semester. On-campus students were able to move into the newly renovated Whiteface hall, which is newly painted and includes new windows and lighting to save energy. The dorms in Whiteface hall also has newly renovated bathrooms, and other residential buildings will have renovated bathrooms. Across from that dorm building, Kent hall is currently being renovated by the school. The long-term plan to fix up the dorms on campus is due to the aging of the buildings. Classes for students started on Monday, Aug. 26. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris

PLATTSBURGH | Prime Companies, LLC, requested a Planned Unit Development (PUD) City Special Use Permit for the planned Durkee Street redevelopment. The special use permit was filled out in July and presented to the Zoning Board of Appeals on Aug. 19. However, no decisions were made whether to grant Prime the PUD or not. The special use permit is included in the Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS), which is being conducted by Chazen Companies, and no sure decisions can be made until the study is complete. The GEIS is covering all DRI projects as a whole and is looking for any threats the projects may pose to the environment, traffic and more. Prime is looking for the proposed building, which will stand 60 feet tall, to be built three feet from the sidewalk. This is 12 feet closer than the suggested 15 feet for new buildings. It was explained that this is due to the fact that most buildings downtown are street edge, as well as the fact that there are transformers there. According to the application, “The proposed

Check out These

PUD allows for the redevelopment of the lands with buildings bordering the roadways and sidewalks to define the streetscape and fit into the general character of the surrounding area. It is an infill project in the downtown fabric of the city. Many years ago, there were buildings on the project site, but have since been removed. The surrounding area has buildings bordering the sidewalks and streetscape that typically define a walkable downtown area. This proposed PUD will allow the flexibility to have buildings close to the sidewalks.” This idea raised some concern at the recent zoning board meeting. “That deviation is pretty extreme - the three feet as opposed to the 15 feet,” Chairman of the Zoning Board Ron Nolland said. “Being so close to the street with a 60-foot tall building concerns me probably more than anything. Especially on a lot that hasn’t been built.” The apartment building design includes five stories - one underground and four above ground. The underground level, which will now stretch under the whole building, is for parking, the first level is for retail and the top three are apartments. This, along with the walkways and landscape plantings planning on being included, matches the same theme of the downtown area, according to Prime. Sketches of the building can be found attached to the PUD application on the Plattsburgh website at cityofplattsburgh.com. ■

or availability to the riverwalk,” Bradford said. “It would be a great spot to have something, but obviously until the spot and building goes up, there’s nothing to do.”

From DURKEE UPDATE » pg. 1

Some things suggested at the open house that Prime is planning on adding include more stone alongside Bridge Street, where the sidewalk slopes, exposing more wall, as well as different treatments along the building and roof line.

From CODE ENFORCEMENT » pg. 1

“The (rental) buildings are in very poor condition,” deGrandpre said. “Many of the landlords and owners of these buildings don’t live in Plattsburgh and some live in different states … these landlords have no interest or concern for the residents of Plattsburgh, and the conditions of their properties reflect that.”

Groundbreaking is expected to happen in spring 2020. Nothing can currently move forward or be decided until the Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS) is finished, likely December 2019. A sketch of the inside of the apartments with generic furniture will be created soon. ■

Senior Engineer Tanner Bradford from McFarland Johnson, who has been working with Prime and the city, was also there as a representative.

DeGrandpre referenced a bed and breakfast located on Oak Street that was vandalized due to a frat house that sits next door. The owners of the B&B shut down because of the disturbances throughout the school year. For that reason, the code enforcement committee had two main requests.

“The driving comments were open space, access to the river and parking,” Bradford said on what is important to residents of Plattsburgh.

The first request was directed toward the building inspectors of Plattsburgh.

There will be a walkway connecting the arts park to the riverwalk, and the open parking lot will be clear. This leaves open green space as well as a view of the water.

“Our code enforcement committee would ask the council to consider a document code that would require all rental properties in the city to be registered,” deGrandpre said. “If the building inspector doesn’t know where a rental property is, obviously he can’t inspect it.”

The average cost of rent as a starter for a one bedroom is going to be $1,000. This doesn’t include electricity; however, all other utilities, including internet and cable, are included in rent. There will be an on-site property manager provided by Prime; parking management hasn’t been determined yet, but Prime is working with the city with public parking.

This was discussed later on with the City of Plattsburgh building inspector Joe McMahon. “It’s a little more complicated than I think most think,” McMahon said on the rental property issue. “The state requires us to periodically inspections on three apartment buildings alone - so one and two family homes … if you’re speaking city-wise, it’s going to include a lot more than college housing.”

At least one parking lot will have an electric charging station; the underground garage charging station isn’t confirmed. Also not confirmed are the business/ retail units that will be on the main part of the first floor of the building, the wings being used as residential units. The current sketch includes one main entrance for the commercial section, but that will change once it’s determined which businesses will move in.

Secondly, in what he called a “pressing issue,” deGrandpre brought up the parties, noise and threat of vandalism that students might bring with them as school has returned. The code enforcement committee made its second request - more foot patrol in the center city by the Plattsburgh police and faster response to complaints. According to deGrandpre, foot patrol could’ve stopped the vandalism that took place at the bed and breakfast that shut down.

The most open item in the plan right now is the unmarked space by the public lot. Right now, this is where the farmers market pavilion stands. Prime has no plans to build on this section or demolish the current building as the Saranac Riverwalk project goes on. The company is keeping it open in case a business wants to rent the land or Prime decides to build something else in the future.

The possibility of a neighborhood watch was brought up. There used to be neighborhood watch volunteers in Plattsburgh; however, two members were assaulted while on patrol, and the group stopped. Representatives from Prime and McFarland Johnson gave a presentation on the latest updates with the Durkee Lot multi-use building.

“There has been some comments I’ve seen about access

From OPEN HOUSE » pg. 1

There will remain 50 public spots in the parking lot, but the rest will be made up across the downtown area, as the other DRI projects include on and off-street parking; paid parking is being considered separately. “To move parking out of the corner of our downtown and intersperse it within the downtown is the keystone of what we are trying to accomplish with this plan,” Plattsburgh Mayor Colin Read said in a press conference before the open house. “The Plattsburgh Parking Advisory Committee has done an admirable job in finding these parking solutions around the city. They’ll be much closer to where people actually need

Read also mentioned the development of the proposed arts park downtown, the riverwalk and more green space the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) will provide as time goes on. The overall DRI project is expected to bring in 500 temporary jobs, 100 permanent jobs, about $11 million in downtown revenue and will lower taxes for residents, putting the city in a more fiscally sound foundation, Read says. Nothing will move forward until the Generic Environmental Impact Statement is completed; it’s expected date in December.

“(Dalton) was always upbeat, always engaging with the younger kids and being a role model to them,” Section VII New York State wrestling and football official D.J. Barber said.

The high school held a celebration of life memorial for Dalton on Aug. 28, where students and staff were brought together to remember the happy teenager they knew and loved. SUNY Plattsburgh also held a campus gathering in support of Dexter Criss Aug. 27.

Through the Capital Project, CVES plans to redesign the educational spaces on the Satellite Campus, relocate Instructional Services Center (ISC) staff to the facilities to eliminate lease costs of ISC’s offices and create a conference center that can hold more than 350 people for events.

According to C V ES District Superintendent Dr. Mark Davey: “the purchase is beneficial for the 16 CVES component school districts and for Clinton County. Through the purchase of the Satellite Campus and re-location of ISC staff

Also, with CVES owning the facilities, our component school districts are now eligible to receive BOCES Aid on classroom construction work that is planned on the campus as part of the CVES Capital Project.”

The transaction was completed on July 3, 2019 at the Clinton County Government Center. Present at the transfer were: from CVES, Board President Larry Barcomb, District Superintendent Dr. Mark C. Dalton registered as an organ donor when he was 17, and his heart has already been given to a transplant patient, saving their life. An honor walk was held for Dalton and his generosity. The Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir, which Dalton played drums for, sang as Dalton was brought down the hall to the operating room in a gurney alongside his sister, Danielle, and father. There, his heart was removed and given to another patient. Friends, family, hospital staff and those who knew the Criss family lined the halls in support. Dalton was to begin classes at SUNY Plattsburgh Monday, Aug. 26. Employees of the college who are seeking support can call the Employee Assistance Program at 518564-3277. Chazen holds scoping session because it avoids what’s called segmentation... that could have synergistic impacts on or with each other.”

Public comments for GEIS By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

PLATTSBURGH | The Chazen Companies held a scoping session for the public on the draft scoping document. Chazen was selected by the council to create the document on the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement (DGEIS) on the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) projects to improve the downtown area in terms of parking, building and creating more river access. The DGEIS looks for any impacts on the environment, fiscal state of the city, traffic or historical and cultural conflicts. “The city council has done what we believe is something that’s extraordinarily responsible by deciding not only cause the preparation of an environmental impact statement for one or two of the proposed downtown development and redevelopment projects, but actually look at them at the abrogate,” Attorney Mark Schachner said at the session. “It’s not something that’s pursued often, but it’s considered a very responsible way to pursue environmental impact review

The scoping session was held on Thursday, Aug. 22 before the monthly public safety meeting. There, residents of Plattsburgh were allowed to give suggestions to Chazen and the council. Whether it be to add an item to be reviewed, take something off or other suggestions, it was also urged that the public submit written comments by Aug. 26. It was made clear that suggestions were not to include personal opinions about the projects, just suggestions for reconfigurations of the document. One of the suggestions came from Curt Gervich, who is on the City of Plattsburgh planning board. Suggestion was that there should be more than two alternatives to the Durkee Street Lot Prime Development. According to Gervich, in scoping documents such as these, there are usually more than two alternatives to a project. In this case, the alternatives to the Prime building is a 250 space multi-story parking garage, or no action. “It just seems to me at the stage that we’re at that often SQER analysis have more than two alternatives,” Gervich said. “The no-action is totally appropriate, the multi-story parking garage is an alternative maybe appropriate. But I’d like to see more alternatives an alternatives

Public input: The public was invited to come to the scoping session at City Hall to make suggestions for the scoping draft regarding the GEIS for the DRI projects.

that are in line with some of the other proposals that have been put forth to the downtown space, especially the Durkee Street space.” Comments were sent to the council via written letter and then forwarded to Chazen

Companies. Each comment was taken into account and those who sent in suggestions will get a reply, if not one already. The scoping draft is available to view on the city website at cityofplattsburgh.com. ■

By Dan Alexander PUBLISHER

We’re all guilty when it comes to pushing off the tough tasks to a later date. Our government entities are far worse when it comes to kicking the can down the road. Politicians won’t risk a single vote when it comes to addressing a high wire issue that could backfire and go badly very quickly. Leave it to President Trump to light a fire on the China trade issue to get the world spinning a little hotter. By most accounts, economists, politicians, and even the media agree that China’s been eating our lunch over the last few decades. It was easier to go along than it was to aggressively challenge our number one geopolitical competitor, with so much at stake. In the age-old battle between a free democracy and a communist regime, we’ve seen Chinese policies that forced technology transfer, intellectual property theft and other trade practices that have enabled Chinese stateowned enterprises to deprive U.S. companies by diver ting profits that other wise would have gone to them. Over the years since we open relations with China, we’ve gone through periods of tension followed by periods of stabilization but more often than not the stabilization was brought about by unbalanced concessions on the part of the U.S. No one wins in a trade war, but at some point in our relationship, the U.S. needed to stand up and demand fair trade practices that benefit both nations. There is more than enough room to criticize the Trump approach, but at the core of the dispute with trade, China must realize the U.S. is fully committed to resolving these issues now versus later. Unfortunately, in the past, our leaders have agreed to solutions that favored China since we still held the upper hand. As times and conditions have changed, we can no longer negotiate in this manner. We can only hope that the President ’s unconventional political approach to the negotiations tip China’s imbalance to a more favorable outcome for the U.S. and set the stage for more level treatment in the future. Additionally, since manufacturing and advanced technology have national security implications, the need to protect these sources of U.S. economic growth, competitiveness, and security have strategic importance with the U.S. defense industry, that has long been skeptical about Chinese intentions. If not now, we may never be in a better position to take up the challenge of the long-term strategic competition with China. ■ — Dan Alexander is the publisher of the Sun Community News

Kickin’ Ash! By Rich Redman COLUMNIST

We have been hearing it for the last year or two, the invasion is coming, no not migrants, the Emerald Ash borer. On a recent trip to Western New York, I personally saw the damage done. Countless White Ash, (Fraxinus) trees are being killed by this bug. To quote the Cornell website: “The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire is an invasive, wood boring beetle native to Asia that feeds on and eventually kills all species of Ash.

The EAB was first found in North America in 2002 near Detroit and since has spread to 13 states and two Canadian provinces, killing hundreds of millions of Ash trees in rural and urban settings. The Emerald Ash Borer has been found in a number of New York State counties, and a quarantine zone is in effect to prevent its further spread.” It is now in Vermont, Canada and counties to our south, we are in its crosshairs. The quarantine is not working, the bug is coming to an Ash tree near you soon. Along the New York State Thruway, crews with excavators are removing dead and dying trees before they fall into the roadway. Along 18-mile creek in

Horse racing is cruelty

To the Editor: This year, 58 horses have already died on New York State race tracks. Ten have died at Saratoga Race Course since April. Horseracing is cruelty and violence disguised as sport and entertainment. It is predicated on the exploitation of sentient beings as gambling instruments. Horses are moneymakers in a morally bankrupt industry that disposes of them when their returns diminish. The idea that running is natural for these horses is a fallacy blithely repeated to reassure people of their right to participate in this exploitation, and to assuage their guilt about the subsequent deaths, injuries, and miserable, unnatural existence these animals must endure. Racehorses are bred as investments and begin “training” at 18 months and racing at 2-years-old even though they do not reach musculoskeletal maturity until around age 6. There is nothing natural about horses being kept isolated in stalls for up to 23 hours a day, deprived of social interaction. There is nothing noble in forcing horses, through violent whipping while perched on their back, to run at

perilous speeds around a track, often in extreme temperatures and in dangerous proximity to one another. They suffer horrific fractures, head-on collisions, pulmonary hemorrhages and myriad other dreadful injuries that lead to the same outcome – their untimely deaths at the hands of humans. Tens of thousands are ultimately “retired” to slaughterhouses in Canada or Mexico. The time has come to shut down this abhorrent travesty. Join a group like Horseracing Wrongs to educate, agitate and advocate. Do not stand idly by while others bet on lives that are being sacrificed for entertainment. Do realize that the pain, suffering and killing of these horses make for a terrible backdrop for afternoon picnics in fancy clothes. You can like horses. You can like horseracing. You can’t like both. - Christina Holland, Plattsburgh ■

Drop animals from menus

To the Editor: This Sept. 1 will mark 80 years since Hitler invaded Poland and started World War II. Three years later, he launched the Holocaust that murdered 6 million European Jews.

A key question facing historians is how could an enlightened society that produced our civilization’s greatest philosophers, poets, painters and composers also produce its most notorious mass murderers, along with millions of ordinary upstanding citizens who just went along. Was the Holocaust a peculiarly German phenomenon, or are other enlightened societies capable? How about our own American society? Jewish Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer gave a clear answer when he wrote, “To the animals, all people are Nazis.” Singer’s message is that we are all capable of oppressing the more vulnerable sentient beings in our midst, frequently without even thinking about it. Our own enlightened society has translated the arbitrary Nazi dictum “the Christian lives, the Jew dies” into an equally arbitrary “the dog lives, the pig dies.” Only the victims’ names have been changed. The blissful, self-serving ignorance of the death camps and slaughterhouses in our midst remains. Our very first step on the long road to end all oppression should be to drop animals from our menus. - Ashanti Jenkins, Ticonderoga ■

Biggest Loser coming to Plattsburgh Rec Center seeking applicants

PLATTSBURGH | The city of Plattsburgh Recreation Center is seeking candidates for its 11th season of the North Country’s Biggest Loser adult fitness program, set to start on Saturday, Oct. 5. The program is looking for 20 adult participants to make lifestyle changes and work with personal trainers and other healthcare professionals in an effort to lead active, healthy lifestyles. The North Country’s Biggest Loser Program (NCBL) will consist of weight training, circuit

training and cardio workouts with certified trainers and volunteer coaches. Also, there will be nutrition education from certified nutritionists, registered dietitians and physician assistants for a period of six months. Theodore Santaniello will be leading the NCBL training team with several other trainers and coaches along his side. Santaniello has his master’s degree in Kinesiology and over 10 years of fitness instruction experience.

“Participants usually lose between 15 and 25 pounds during the six months, and several inches all over their bodies,” said Santaniello. “This is not the primary goal of the program, however. We strive to teach participants how to exercise correctly and make good nutritional decisions so they can better themselves both physically and emotionally. We also give

them a strong support network that instills motivation, as well as builds their overall confidence in themselves.”

The fourth annual kickoff event, “Race the Base,” will continue in this year’s season and is open to anyone who wants to participate in the race and help support the new group. This timed one-mile-long race, located at the City Recreation Center at 52 U.S. Oval, will be the NCBL’s “first challenge,” held on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 9 a.m. Registration for the event can be done online at plattsburghrecreation.com or at 8:30 a.m. the day of the race.

Training sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m to 7 p.m. Attendance is required as well as a commitment to workout independently. Candidates will be chosen through an application process and will require a physician’s release. Gym memberships for all participants are free; however, there is a $125 fee to cover the expense of professional staffing. The program will take place at the City Recreation Center. Participants will be exposed to a number of different training activities to promote enjoyment of physical activity and long-term success. Previous year’s contestants will return as coaches to support participants in the program and offer guidance.

Applications for the North Country’s Biggest Loser program can be downloaded at plattsburghrecreation.com or picked up at the City Recreation Center. All applications must be turned in by Sept. 20. For more information, contact Theodore Santaniello, center supervisor, at 518-324-7709. ■

‘Land, Water and Sky’ by Bill Crosby in the Main Gallery at The Strand Center for the Arts PLATTSBURGH | Renowned painter, Bill Crosby, is excited to display an exhibition of his artwork entitled, “Land, Water and Sky,” in the Main Gallery at The Strand Center for the Arts. This upcoming exhibit will open in The Strand Center Main Gallery on Friday, September 6, 2019, and a free reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. that night.

the paintings are a response to the natural landscape of Land, Water and Sky. Although some may reference specific locations, most are a confluence of his experiences in the natural landscape. Done in the studio, they are sometimes fragmented, broken, reassembled and improvised. Crosby states: “I feel that there is a bold, spontaneous and emotional quality to my work. These abstract landscapes happen and develop on the canvas as gestures, washes, and colors as composition emerge. In the end the painting is its own thing: Not of some specific place but it becomes a new landscape with feeling, emotion, expression and energy. Abstract but with a sense of a horizon line the paintings are open to interpretation and one’s imagination. Involved, more detailed and opaque areas are played against open transparent, underdeveloped and linear areas of the composition. Paintings are intended to challenge and excite.”

Crosby was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1938. He graduated from Boardman High School and received his terminal degree in painting from the University of Michigan in 1963. That same year, Crosby began teaching at SUNY Plattsburgh, staying there until 1998. He and his wife Pat have lived in the North Country of upstate New York for over 40 years. They have three grown children, two grandchildren and have always had one dog or more. While continuing to reside in the 1813 stone house which they rebuilt, Crosby and his wife have been building a camp/ studio/workshop on the coast of Maine since 1989. Over the years the Adirondacks of New York, the Maine coast, the New England mountains, the Atlantic coast, and Alaska have become the primary locations for Crosby’s photography and painting inspirations. Concerning his work, Crosby states: “Often my work can be considered as an abstract impression of the landscape. Certainly, I think of my paintings and photographs as an interpretative response to the landscape.”

Keleher, who has also coached the Plattsburgh North Stars, returned to Peru after five years as the head coach at Plattsburgh High, where the program saw improvements but fell in the past two seasons to the Indians in the Section VII/Class B semifinals by scores of 7-0 and 6-0 in two very even contests.

PERU | A familiar face will return to the sidelines this season at Peru Central School, as former Peru assistant and PHS head coach Pat Keleher will lead the program this season.

For Keleher, a return to the Peru filed for practice last week brought along with it the tragic news about the passing of Peru graduate and former football player Dalton Criss,

Pat Keleher will return to the sidelines of Peru this season, saying it will be the final spot in his long tenure as a coach in the CVAC and with the Plattsburgh North Stars. File photo

who was killed from injuries sustained in a car accident. “No question it has been a difficult few days,” Keleher said, “The Peru Football Family is hurting but banding together to support each other and our community. The school response has been outstanding and we have provided a great deal of support for our student athletes. The kids have been great and have not only shown tremendous support for the Criss family, and each other, but they have continued to get the work of football done while supporting each other. “As coaches we use a tragedy like this to teach the lessons of life

“It was a very difficult decision to leave Plattsburgh,” he said. “I felt like the program was stable, there were good coaches in place and I would leave them in a stable position. I expect them to be a good team and it is going to be a battle. There are kids and coaches I have a lot of respect for and love.” Keleher and the Indians will face PHS week three at the Apple Bowl. “The game will take care of itself, but before will be a tough experience because I respect all of them,” he said, “In my heart, I want them to win every one but one — maybe two.” The game against the Hornets will also mark the dawning — or should it be sunset — on a new era in Peru football with the first Friday night game in school history (since 1959). “That will be different for Peru,” Keleher said. “It’s going to be a transition for our community and a transition for our kids, but I think it is going to be exciting. I am a believer that Friday nights should be high school and I like the Friday night game. We actually have eight Friday night games this season — we have no Saturday games on our schedule.” ■

Brown gets to play in Canadian tournament By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PERU | A Peru sophomore had the chance to play during the U19 Women’s World Lacrosse Championship in Peterborough, Ontario recently. Sophia Brown, 15, was a goalie for Team Quebec in the world championships, having been recruited for the team through the Plattsburgh Lacrosse Club. “She has been a member of the club for two years, starting as a defensive player and transitioned into goal this year as there was a need for a goalie on her team,” said mother Kristina Brown. “While playing in goal at a Peru sophomore Sophia Brown play game with our sister team (Westmount/ ed goalie for Team in the provincial Quebec tour nament at th Montreal) , Sophia and her dad (a coach Ch e recent Wor ld La ampionships in On crosse tario. for Plattsburgh Lacrosse Club) were Ph oto prov ided approached by Lynz Keys-Bolton. “This girl comes up to me and said, ‘I am recruiting you,’” said Sophia. “I had no clue who she was at first, but my dad told me who she was and that she wanted me to play goal for Team Quebec. I was not sure if it was going to actually happen, but a couple days later we got an email inviting us to join the team.” Brown then went to three Three training camps before going to the international event, including the opening ceremony for the provincial tournament and a USA vs Canada world championship match before playing in games at Thomas Stewart High School in Peterborough. “As a family, we spent extra time watching some of the World games prior to and after Sophia’s games,” Brown said. “I cannot express what an amazing experience this was for Sophia and our family A unique opportunity that lead to such a rich experience. Sophia grew as a lacrosse player; but we were all touched by the many examples/ stories of sportsmanship, teamwork, and compassion.”

“It was really cool to hear about how the team came together to represent Quebec in the provincial tournament,” Sophia Brown said. “It was a fun and competitive event and cool to see that level of play — it was an eyeopener seeing people who had played for 10-plus years.” Brown also said she was impressed by the level of sportsmanship everyone showed from province to province and nation to nation. “To see how much respect everyone had for each other because we were all there because we had a passion for the game and just wanted to play and have fun was amazing,” she said. Kristina Brown added the chance also allows her daughter to stay in touch with a unique group of friends she could have only met through lacrosse. “She has the chance to continue a connection and partnership with our lacrosse sisters in Quebec,” she said. ■

NEW DIRECTOR LOOKS TO CREATE ART CONNECTION BETWEEN MUSEUM, ACADEMICS

PLATTSBURGH | The future of the Plattsburgh State Art Museum is in interdisciplinary cooperation, its new director says. Tonya Cribb, who arrived on campus in June from the Stetson University Homer and Dolly Hand Art Center in Deland, Fla., looks at the art museum as “a pearl in the crown of the college.”

“We have a multi-million-dollar collection here,” she said. “This is an academic museum. I want to reinvigorate it; I want to engage with faculty and staff, to plan programs and exhibits that are multidisciplinary and cross-curricular.” Cribb discusses the “Visions of Place: Complex Geographies in Contemporary Israeli Art” exhibit that opened Aug. 26 in the Burke Gallery and Slatkin Study Room, saying it’s a perfect example of how the museum can be incorporated into coursework from programs across campus.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISCUSSION “Throughout the ‘Visions’ show, the artists have portrayed opinions on Israeli life from the left, the middle and the right,” Cribb said. “It accurately reflects expressions of the artists as they experience it. Anyone from history can connect to it; political science can connect to it. The English

department can use the show in writing projects. There are a lot of opportunities for discussion. The show is being held in conjunction with the Jewish studies program, and that will help us connect with the Jewish community.” Another example on campus is the Rockwell Kent Gallery. Cribb said more should be done to promote “such an important and world-class collection.” “Rockwell Kent is part of the American art history canon,” she said. “He is such a well-known American artist who made a huge impact on the world. He is very well-regarded. And his work isn’t just paintings. He was a writer, a textile designer; he designed housewares, he illustrated books. “Kent did a lot of art. He did work he wanted to do and work he was paid to do. He had opinions on the world and how the world should work. These are multiple issues we should be talking about.” A native of Rock Hill, S.C., she took over the art museum directorship from Dr. Karen Blough, art professor, who had been named interim director in February 2017. Cribb earned her BFA in ceramics from Winthrop University in Rock Hill before earning her master’s in museum science from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. See ART DIRECTOR » pg. 10

TAUGHT ART COURSES

From ART DIRECTOR » pg. 9

She has taught art history, arts management, gallery practices, docent and studio courses on the college level. It only fuels her interest in bringing the academic and art worlds together.

INTERESTED IN MUSEUMS “I thought I was going to graduate with that degree and be a potter in South Carolina, but two years before I graduated, I started work in galleries on campus. That changed the trajectory of my career,” she said. “I started getting interested in museums. I did art sales for three years before going back to grad school.”

“We should be able to connect with departments all across campus,” she said. “We should market it. Having art touches every aspect of life.” Not interested in what she called “vanity shows,” Cribb said the art “should set an example. Students should see quality work in a variety of media. If you had a show on the beauty of the Adirondacks, it shouldn’t just be about the beauty of the Adirondacks,” she said. “It should look at the other aspects and issue of the Adirondacks — the environment, the economy, the policies and politics, for example. A show should be a part of educational outreach that highlights a multidisciplinary approach. Talk about the reasons why the artist did what he or she did; there are layers to artwork, and our faculty can use those layers in their programs.” ■

She worked for two artists who had a gallery where she learned about the business side of art. “Business is important, but I really liked the educational aspect. I didn’t see myself as a teacher, but I wanted to do education and started thinking museum education — the creativity of museum education. I felt I could do it. There is a lot of creativity in the process of coming up with programs, working for different age groups.” At the Hand Art Center, Cribb was responsible for oversight and management of Stetson University’s permanent collection, organizing and executing the yearly exhibit schedule

and associated educational programming, managing and mentoring the staff, which included eight to 10 students each semester and collaborating with university

departments and faculty members to develop resources for use in Stetson courses, something she is poised to do here.
