PERU | The owner of a bulldog that attacked an 81-year-old woman last year has been sentenced to one year in jail.

Michael V. James, 58, of Peru, was convicted of three misdemeanor charges — criminal contempt in the second degree, reckless endangerment in the second degree and “dangerous dog,” a violation of State Agriculture and Markets Law. James appeared in Peru Town Court last week, where in addition to the misdemeanors, a jury found him guilty of three counts each of dog running at large, unlicensed dog and dog causing harm to a person, all local law violations.

PLATTSBURGH | It was 11 years ago when Treasurer Kimberly Davis fi rst ran for office in Clinton County.

It was a special election. The county’s treasurer at the time, Janet Duprey, had left

office the previous year to run, successfully, for state Assembly. A former county legislator, Joe Giroux, was appointed to replace her until an election could be held to fill the remainder of Duprey’s term.

That’s when Davis stepped in.

with events through the North Country Chamber of Commerce and took on leadership roles with local organizations, including the Plattsburgh Noon Kiwanis Club.

“I had also volunteered on several campaigns and better understood how to campaign effectively. I took a leap of faith and resigned from my position at the (Glens Falls National) bank to run for the treasurer’s position,” she said. “It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

It was six years later when Davis ran again.

But this time, she won. By 2,269 votes.

“I was much more prepared in 2013. If you ask anyone who has ever run for a countywide seat, they will tell you that it is an experience unlike any other,” she said. “You can’t grasp the scope of it until you do it. Since I had the experience of it, I took that knowledge with everything I had learned from my years of volunteering on campaigns.”

“I am incredibly humbled to receive this award, especially coming from the Girl Scouts,” Davis told The Sun. “I was in Girl Scouts from 1st grade through 12th and many of the lessons and traits we learned in the Girl Scouts have carried through my life. Knocking on doors to sell Girl Scout cookies certainly helped with knocking on doors campaigning.”

When she started her first campaign in Clinton County — she had previously ran for an assessor’s position downstate — she’d only been living here for three years and didn’t know many people.

Ultimately, she wasn’t successful in that bid. Davis garnered 8,817 votes, and her opponent got 9,101.

But Davis quickly became an active part of the business community, got involved

She used technology and data to more efficiently reach voters. She rallied volunteers to help. She dedicated more of her time to campaigning.

Davis has served as county treasurer since winning that race, and ran unopposed last year to secure the post through 2021.

She still serves on the Board of Directors for the Plattsburgh Noon Kiwanis Club and as a district advocate for The Eliminate Project, an effort by Kiwanis International to raise $110 million to end maternal and neonatal tetanus.

She also serves as the co-founder of North Country Women United, a political action committee to elect more Democratic women to public office in Clinton, Essex, and Franklin counties.

“Women are incredibly underrepresented in government. For example, for Clinton County positions, none of the County Judges

are female (out of three),” she said. “I am the only full-time female elected official (out of five), and there is only one female legislator (out of 10).

“Women need to be as represented in government as we are in the population.”

When asked how it felt to be honored by the Girl Scouts for her efforts, Davis said that she’s humbled.

“Overall, it is an honor that the work that I do is noticed,” she said, when asked how it felt to be honored by the Girl Scouts.

“Volunteering and public service shouldn’t be done for recognition, but it is heartwarming to know that it is appreciated by others.” ■ — This story has been abridged for print. » Dog attack Cont. from pg. 1 James has also been directed to pay $2,190.98 in restitution to the victim of the attack, Loretta Timmons, who was hospitalized last September after suffering what her family described as “major facial trauma” as a result of the attack. She underwent five hours of reconstructive surgery.

“On behalf of myself and my family, after almost a year we are pleased to finally have an ending to the trauma experienced from this vicious attack,” said Timmons in a statement. “We are grateful for the persistence and support of the Peru Town Court and Assistant District Attorney Tim Blatchley in obtaining justice for our family.”

The 103-pound bulldog has since been euthanized.

Assistant District Attorney Timothy Blatchley, who prosecuted the case, sought maximum jail time, maximum fines and objected to the court postponing the start of James’ jail time to Oct. 4 to get his “affairs in order,” according to the district attorney’s office.

James could not be reached for comment before deadline.

But he told MyChamplainValley’s Rebecca Reese last year that the incident wasn’t intentional.

“It’s not something I did intentional and if I could take it back — I’d do anything in this world to do that,” James told the outlet.

Of the dog, James said that the he had nipped people in the past but never outright bitten anyone.

“He’s had an issue a few times of nipping people but never biting,” James said. “Never a bite. I just feel so sorry for the family and especially Mrs. Timmons.”

DANGEROUS DOG

Prior to her attack, town courts in Dannemora and Ches-

terfield had legally deemed the bulldog “dangerous” under the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law, according to the district attorney’s office.

That law defines “dangerous dog” as any dog that, without justification, attacks a person or other animal and causes physical injury or death; or behaves in a manner that a reasonable person would believe poses a serious and unjustified imminent threat of serious physical injury or death, according to the New York State Bar Association.

Despite the ruling, the dog had been allowed to stay with James without surveillance or safeguards in place, according to Timmons.

“During the jury trial in May, it was confirmed that I was the fourth individual to have been attacked by James’ bulldog Ares,” she said.

She had been checking her mail outside her Union Road residence when the attack happened. Deanna Quinn-Rotella, a state Department of Transportation employee, spotted Timmons while driving by and intervened.

RECOVERY

One year after the attack that changed her life, Timmons is back at home — but the scars remain.

“Although many of the physical injuries have healed there will be lifelong needs both emotionally and physically,” Timmons said in a statement.

The fear that it may happen again lingers.

“James has been allowed to keep the two other dogs from the attack in his home. I have been limited to when I will go outside because I do not want to be outside when he is home and the dogs may be allowed out,” she said.

have always had dogs in their homes.

“But my neighbors and I should not have to be scared to be in our yards because someone moved into our neighborhood with dangerous dogs,” Timmons said.

Timmons called for a change in the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law that would strengthen accountability measures for owners of dangerous dogs.

“During this process we became aware that New York State Agriculture and Markets Law are not strong enough when it comes to dog bites. Although the bulldog who attacked in this instance had already bitten at least three other people, the law only classifies James’ actions as misdemeanors,” said Timmons.

“There should be a change in the statute for cases that have the severity of an attack as vicious as this one, whether it is the first or the fourth bite, and a system should be in place to monitor owners of pets who are deemed dangerous.”

She hopes, if anything comes of this attack, it’s positive change in the legal system.

“We hope this case can bring about change that will lead to better laws and regulations around dog bites and the handling of dangerous dogs,” she said.

PLATTSBURGH | The two men who were critically burned in a dorm fire at Seton Hall University in 2000 will return to the SUNY Plattsburgh campus for a repeat of their 2017 program, “After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival,” Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Cardinal Lounge, Angell College Center.

On Jan. 19, 2000, arsonists set fire to a Seton Hall dorm, killing three and injuring 58. Shawn Simmons and Alvaro Llanos were two of those critically injured after crawling through the burning hallway. They will tell the story of how their lives were changed.

Town plans senior trip to Akwesasne

The International Trade Commission torpedoed the tariffs in a 5-0 decision late last month, ruling that a single U.S. hedge fund-owned paper mill failed to demonstrate they were being put an unfair disadvantage

by Canadian imports.

It’s great news. We welcome the reprieve, and are appreciative of the state and federal lawmakers who went to bat for our industry, recognizing that while we may often disagree, we play a vital role in democracy and furthering civil discourse.

The rising prices struck like a thunderclap across an industry already navigating seismic shifts, including declining advertising revenues, circulation and other market forces.

To the Editor: Recent letters to the editor indicate a wide philosophical division amongst Americans.

It is time we all respect the will of the voters, as will I, whether it be for legislators or for president, regardless of party.

Some believe that some illegality may be beneficial for the country. I believe that any endorsement of illegal acts only breeds more illegality.

Adherence to the rule of law and compassion need not be mutually exclusive. We have been the proud sponsors of needy, elderly Latinos for three decades through Unbound, a Christian organization. Only $25 a month fully cares for an aged person. Join, and you’ll be able to walk the walk.

Any mob action intended to intimidate should be condemned by all of us. The new secular morality may be irreconcilable with the traditional Bible-based morality.

Massive fines on the Little Sisters of the Poor and punishment on a family-owned cake baking business for refusing to make a particular cake for a homosexual marriage highlights this.

Perhaps, it is time for a return to state’s rights on social issues.

Alden isn’t the only culprit.

There’s GateHouse Media, which continues to vacuum up newspapers across the country with the goal of increasing dividends for their shareholders — not giving newsrooms the tools they need to thrive and serve the community, much less charting a long-term plan to ensure a sustainable business model.

The company announced last week they will close five newspapers in Arkansas, leaving each of these communities without a source for local news.

And despite the reprieve of the tariffs, the powerhouse still used the price hike to shutter the Stockton Record in California, the newspaper announced last week.

As the landscape continues to shift, it’s the local companies that seem to be embracing their communities — not absentee owners. ■

It asked people to nominate candidates for parade grand marshal.

Nominations were due by Aug. 15. My family wanted to nominate a long-time member of the community. Then we saw a posting on Facebook dated July 18 announcing the winners of the grand marshal positions.

It was almost a month before the deadline. I called the Port Henry Chamber of Commerce and spoke to a woman about the dates.

Before I could finish, she told me three people had already been chosen.

I told her they were fine choices, but I didn’t feel the process had been handled in a professional manner. She told me that the nominees got more votes than anyone else would ever get even if she accepted any more letters.

Nothing in your article indicated that the winner would be chosen by the number of votes received. I presumed the person’s merits determined the winner. I asked why she hadn’t at least waited until the deadline to announce winners.

She yelled at me, “Why don’t you come down here and try to do my job!” and hung up the phone.

I thought about what she said — we can all have a bad day — so I called back and left a message that I would like to discuss the issue. Warrant arrest made after Target theft

PLATTSBURGH | A Brushton man was arrested on a warrant by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.

John H. Schoonmaker Jr., 44, was arrested Sept. 2 on an arrest warrant issued by Town of Plattsburgh Court for a single count of petit larceny. It is alleged that Schoonmaker stole property from Target in Plattsburgh in early July.

Schoonmaker was transported to Town of Plattsburgh Court for arraignment, following which he was released on his own recognizances. He is set to reappear in court on a later date. ■

Arrests made for possession of crack cocaine

PERU | New York State Police arrested two last month for allegedly possessing a controlled substance.

Dasan H. Mann, 40, and Amy E. Linskey, 46, both of Hartford, Con-

necticut were arrested for drug possession on Aug. 31. Mann and Linskey were arrested following a vehicle and traffic stop for speed, 80 mph in a 65 mph zone and tinted windows on Interstate 87 in the town of Peru. Mann and Linskey were found in possession of approximately 60 grams of cocaine and 80 grams of crack cocaine.

Both suspects were charged with one count each of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the second degree, a felony. Linskey was also issued tickets for speeding, window tint and for having a covered license plate.

Mann and Linskey were arraigned at the Town of Peru Court. Mann was remanded to the Clinton County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond. Linskey was remanded in lieu of $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond. ■

Accident leads to DWAI arrest

BEEKMANTOWN | A Dannemora man was arrested last week by Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputies for allegedly driving while ability impaired (DWAI) by drugs.

Pence flawed, but he would be an improvement over Trump

To the Editor: Liberal Democrats, contrary to the opinion expressed by a reader last week, don’t want to “depose” Mr. Trump.

Deposing is a violent, sudden removal from office. Impeachment is a deliberative, grand jury-like process that may eventually lead to a Senate trial.

There’s sufficient evidence for Congressional committees to investigate the president for high crimes (obstruction of justice and violations of the emoluments clause) and misdemeanors (rampant lying, incompetence and corruption).

If the House passes articles of impeachment and two-thirds of the Senate votes to remove Trump, Vice President Pence will indeed become president — unless he resigns due to his connection with a disgraced administration.

So, the reader asks, wouldn’t liberal Democrats “hate” Pence, a “Christian-value based” ideologue?

No. Christian values, such as social justice, feeding the hungry, clothing the poor and caring for the sick are entirely consistent with liberalism.

Christians really ought to pray for Trump’s removal. Isn’t he a paragon of selfishness?

Didn’t he appoint many unscrupulous cabinet members and staff, brag about sexual assault, exploit racism and encourage violence at his rallies? How does that, plus threatening nuclear war or borrowing billions to finance a corporate tax cut resemble Christian values?

A booming, overstimulated economy is no impeachment defense. Illegal immigration, despite draconian, un-Christian measures, is increasing. Our standing in the world has precipitously declined under this administration with China as the main beneficiary.

If character still matters to them, if they still embrace libertarianism, conservatives should also support Trump’s removal. Immorality, trade wars, arbitrary deportations, industrial subsidies, denial of due process and curtailing freedom of the press are anathema to conservatives.

So Christians, conservatives and liberals might actually agree on something: Pence might be flawed, but he’s a big improvement over Trump.

Follow the money in Congress race

To the Editor: “Representative to Congress.”

Nice title. It should mean someone who actually represents the people of the district.

Stefanik claims to represent us, but she has voted against the Clean Power Plan which protects our region from out of state pollution, acid rain, etc. She defended that vote with her usual smoke and mirrors.

She claimed that instead, she supported H. Res. 424 which states, “the House of Representatives commits to working constructively, using our tradition of American ingenuity, innovation, and exceptionalism, to create and support economically viable, and broadly supported private and public solutions to study and address the causes and effects of climate change.”

Of course, that bill was just bluster and didn’t commit to do anything, and it never made it out of committee. But, it sounds good in her sound bites and major donor Koch Industries approves.

Follow the money.

For the current election, as of latest reported filings, Stefanik received only 26 percent of her funding from within New York state, and only 7 percent from within our district.

These numbers are very similar to her previous two elections. This makes sense since she never actually lived in our district.

So, I ask you, who owes outside interests and does she actually represent us, the people of the 21st District?

Hint: Less than 7 percent of Stefanik’s money comes from our district.

Sixty percent of Stefanik’s money comes from PACs/committees.

At present, New York’s 21st Congressional District does not have a representative. What we have is a body sitting in Congress who has been bought and paid for by outside interests.

Just follow the money.

DANNEMORA | An inmate at Clinton County Correctional Facility was arrested for allegedly possessing prison contraband last week.

Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Brandy T. Stone, 30, Sept.

8. It’s alleged that Stone was found to be in possession of prison contraband while an inmate at the Clinton County Correctional Facility.

She was charged with promoting dangerous contraband, a class D felony; possession of prison contraband in the second degree, a class A misdemeanor; and three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a class A misdemeanor.

drastically behind other schools in technological infrastructure and use, the facilities within and outside the school are either barely acceptable or completely inadequate, and we have already, and continue to, cut programs and teachers to the detriment of our kids’ education.

An Academic Intervention Services position, which helps kids meet the state’s math and English standards, no longer exists.

Currently there is one teacher for 7-12 history and one for K-12 Physical education. It’s hard to believe this is the situation we are in, one that is potentially damaging even with the best of teachers.

With low student numbers, the course offerings barely go beyond the basics. Electives are scarce, separate honors classes can not exist and it’s a challenge for students to create a transcript showing a rigorous high school career.

These are only a few of the problems that exist due to low enrollment and a starving budget. I applaud the staff and teachers for what they provide for our children under these circumstances.

I believe Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School has many of these same issues. Together, with a higher collective enrollment, carefully used state incentive and building aids, a strong unified board that believes in high expectations for our children and two towns that see themselves as more alike than different, we could be great.

We need to keep our pride at bay and start to see the merger as a potential opportunity for taking our schools and programming to new levels in order to provide an education our area kids deserve.

To the Editor: On Sunday, Sept. 30, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), one of our country’s most successful outdoor conservation tools, is set to expire.

Since its bipartisan inception in 1964, the LWCF has contributed close to $4 billion for federal, state and local governments to sustain important lands, waters, conserve fish and wildlife habitat and to enhance public access to those very same lands and waters.

The LWCF is funded by a portion of royalties the federal government collects from offshore oil and gas production. It doesn’t cost tax payers a cent.

Since its inception, over 40,000 projects have been funded through the LWCF, including parks and campgrounds in nearly every county of every state in the country.

LWCF has contributed $336 million to our state in its 54-year history. LWCF funded projects in New York include:

Sheriff’s deputies arrested James R. Labombard, 28, Sept. 9 on an arrest warrant issued by the Town of Schuyler Falls Court after he was detained

by United States Customs and Border Protection Officers at the Port of Entry in the Town of Mooers.

It is alleged that Labombard damaged several other vehicles on a previous date.

Labombard was charged with criminal mischief in the second degree, a felony.

Labombard was transported to the sheriff’s office to be processed on the charges. Labombard was then arraigned in the Town of Schuyler Falls Court and was released to the Clinton County Probation Department PreTrial Release Program. Labombard is scheduled to reappear in the Town of Schuyler Falls Court on a later date. ■

Falvo has participated in nearly every fest since its inception, and this year will mark the last under her leadership. “It’s people coming together, it’s tradition, it’s fun. It all kicks off Sept. 15 with a parade from the Peru Central School grounds to the parish center on Main Street, slated for 11 a.m.

After the parade ends, a variety of craft vendors, rides, live music and other activities will be on-site through 4 p.m. at the St. Augustine’s Parish Center, next to the Peru Town Hall.

“I usually have a Christmas room, and this year there will be three different rooms,” added Father Alan Shnob. “The greatest Avon collection in the world will also be available for sale.”

Over 50 vendors will be on the grounds this year, according to Falvo. Apple fritters will be for sale.

“And we have fried oreos this year,” she said.

The next day, activities will be available during the same hours, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A chicken barbecue dinner will start at noon.

Attendance is free. Proceeds from the event benefit the St. Augustine’s Church.

The Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration kicked off last week with a series of memorial services designed to highlight and honor the service of soldiers who fought in the War of 1812. One of the services was the Commemoration of the Engagement at Halsey’s Corners, featuring speeches by Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman and historian Dick Brogowski, a salute by British and American re-enactors dressed in period garb and a performance by the Black Stewart Pipers, Gerald Tetrault and Alan Walker. Roy and Jo Carter, a descendant of British Lt. Col. James Willington who died at the Battle of Culver Hill, laid a wreath.

GOP hopefuls stump in North Country EDITOR

LONG LAKE | Republican hopefuls for state office are making the rounds in the North Country.

Julie Killian, GOP gubernatorial candidate Marc Molinaro’s running mate, stumped in Plattsburgh, meeting with local candidates and business officials before venturing deep into the central Adirondacks with stops in Indian Lake and Long Lake, where she delivered comments at the Adirondack Hotel.

A leading concern from voters on the ground is spotty broadband and cellular service, Killian told The Sun after the event.

“First and foremost, it’s a safety issue,” said Killian, a former deputy mayor and city councilor in Rye, Westchester County.

“And as far as economic development, it’s hard to get people to come when there’s no operating cell service or internet services.”

Killian said local officials have cited a rocky relationship with the state office overseeing the statewide broadband build-out.

Keith Wofford, Republican and Conservative Party candidate for attorney general, touched down in Plattsburgh on Friday.

He touted his humble origins, born and raised in what he described as a “tough working class neighborhood” in Buffalo, where his father worked at a Chevy plant.

Wofford said decades of work in the private sector has prepared him for the state’s top law enforcement job because he’s used to working for tough clients who expect results.

The state, he said, is at a crossroads. Like the Democratic field, he assailed the state’s culture of corruption and promised to reign bad actors into control.

And while some national policies may be bad for New Yorkers, Wofford indicated he would ease up on using the office as a bulwark against the Trump administration, where Attorney General Barbara Underwood and her predecessor, Eric Schneiderman, have filed a flurry of legal challenges against the federal government on everything from rollbacks of car emissions to formal lawsuits against the administration’s family separation policy at the southern border.

The office’s main job is to “support and protect the taxpayers of this state,” Wofford said — not as cudgel to attack the federal government on areas of political disagreement.

“It’s a lawsuit a week or a lawsuit a day in an election year,” Wofford said. “I find it difficult to believe every case is a beneficial use of time and taxpayer resources.” ■

“They’re not working with local communities, and that’s a big problem,” Killian said.

The candidate delivered a message of reducing taxes, scrapping the state’s economic development programs — “We’re sending out hundreds of millions of dollars to political cronies,” she said — and combating the state’s brain drain of young people.

Killian, a mother of five, said many college graduates can’t return to the state owing to high property taxes, and that the average age in the state is increasingly more reflective of Florida.

“Affordability is one of the No. 1 issues Marc and I continue to work on,” Killian said.

Killian last appeared on the ballot in April for a special election for a downstate state Senate race, where she was defeated by the Democratic candidate.

Since that contest, in which she said she would not repeal the SAFE Act and supported increased gun control measures, Killian has reversed course.

Molinaro, she said, vowed to repeal the controversial gun control legislation.

“I signed onto that when I signed on to run with him,” Killian said.

Molinaro and Killian will also appear on the Conservative and Reform party lines in November.

Bringing broadband to the Adirondack Park region GUEST COLUMNIST

In 2015, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the launch of the largest and most ambitious state-led broadband program in the nation.

Leveraging $500 million in state funding, the program’s goal is to ensure all New Yorkers have access to broadband at speeds of 100 mbps statewide and at least 25 mbps in the most rural and remote areas.

Earlier this year, Gov. Cuomo announced that commitments have been secured to ensure exactly that – broadband for all.

While the state’s broadband investments span the upstate regions, residents of the Adirondack Park region will see more investment than any other area from the New NY Broadband Program.

When the program was launched, only 12 percent of the Adirondack region had access to high-speed internet. But as a result of the program, it will see an eyepopping $239 million of new broadband investment – most of it in new, state-

of-the-art fiber optic cables which will transform the information infrastructure of the North Country.

Within the 12 counties of the Adirondack Park region, the broadband program is currently implementing: • 45 projects; • $152 million in state funding; • $87 million in private and federal matching funding; • $239 million public-private investment; • Over 3,000 miles of fiber deployment; and • Covering 69,405 locations For the many North Country residents who have never had broadband access, these connections are vital – and are achievements we should all be proud of.

For children doing their homework or applying to college, adults looking for jobs or medical care, or businesses looking to expand, broadband is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity.

The opening date for the new Route 3 location of the Atlanta-based fastfood chain is slated for 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 4, franchise owner Michael King said.

“We are so grateful for the warm reception and excited anticipation for our Plattsburgh Chick-fil-A and are thrilled to confirm our grand opening date,” King said in a statement. “My team members and I can’t wait to open the doors and welcome our friends and neighbors with freshly prepared menu items and warm hospitality as they become like family to us.”

As part of the opening of the new location, the restaurant will hold a “First 100 Campout” event, with a chance to win a year of free Chick-fil-A. Launched in October 2003, the First 100 Campout invites residents to try to be among the first 100 people in the door of

the fast food joint on grand opening day.

From the very beginning, the celebration has attracted campers out in all kinds of weather to secure their spots as early as 24 hours before the opening, according to a news release from the restaurant.

“I would have to give the credit to my linemen,” Williams said after the game. “They opened the holes for me to get the scores We learned our lesson and now we have to focus.”

Williams finished with his two touchdowns and 156 rushing yards, over half of his team’s 239 total offensive yardage.

The Patriots were able to contain the Hornets offense through much of the night, turning a Luis Perez interception into points early in the third quarter as the Patriot hauled in a pass from Evan Snow for a 63-year score.

TICONDEROGA | The Beekmantown Eagles jumped out to a 26-0 lead by halftime Friday night and withstood a Ticonderoga Sentinels comeback in the second half.

The Eagles (2-0) used seven different ball carriers and gained 266 yards on the ground as they held off the Sentinels for a 33-20 win in Week 2 of Champlain Valley Athletic Conference football action.

“I am very proud of the fact that we were able to play a lot of kids in this victory tonight,” said Beekmantown coach

Jamie Lozier. “It’s never easy to come down to Ticonderoga on a Friday night and pull out a win. We are 2-0 now and that’s most important.”

The Eagles struck first on a broken play as Brandon Belrose was flushed out of the pocket by the Sentinels defense.

Belrose, who split time at quarterback with Cade Preston, was able to use his athletic ability and avoided numerous tacklers and outraced the Ticonderoga defense for a 40-yard touchdown run with 5:39 remaining in the first quarter.

Saranac lines dominate in win over Red Storm

SARANAC | In the box score, it was the Luke Maye and Jake Nolan show.

And while the duo accounted for 360 of their teams 439 yards of total offense in their 44-0 win over Saranac Lake Sept. 8, they would be the first to say they were not alone in the win.

“We got a lot of good plays from everyone,” said Nolan, who ran for 36 yards and a score while receiving for 202 yards and a hauling in a pair of touchdown catches.

“We have been getting better in every practice and this was a great team win,” added

Maye, who had 92 yards rushing with two touchdowns while throwing for 232 yards and two more scores.

“We have some big boys up front, our offensive and defensive lines can be monsters,” said Saranac head coach Dylan Everleth. “We want to outwork and out-muscle the opponent, and I felt we did a good job on that today.”

The team concept was shown when the Chiefs found themselves with a second-and-long play on their own one yard line. SARANAC | All nine CVAC volleyball teams came together on the gym floors at Saranac Central School last Saturday, joined by a trio of Section X teams for the annual Saranac Volleyball Fall Tournament.

In the end, the Peru Indians won their second tournament title in three

years with a 25-16 championship one-set win over Plattsburgh High.

“I think the girls have made a lot of progress over this week,” said Indians head coach Mary Anne Lake. “The chemistry of this team is really unique. I have not seen a team like this who cares for each other and pushes as much as they do.”

“I really try to focus on my girls,” said Indian setter Olivia Bousquet. “I couldn’t be a better player without them and we really support each other.”

PERU | The Peru boys soccer team broke open a tightly-contested Northern Soccer League match in the second half Wednesday, Sept. 5.

The Indians, last year’s Division I regular season champions, scored three second-half goals in the final 20:32 to defeat the Northeastern Clinton Cougars 4-1 on opening day of the NSL season.

“There is always the unknown of going into a new season and wondering how we were going to play and match up in league games,” said Peru head coach Matt Armstrong. “Plus,

NCCS was the team that knocked us out of the post season last year, so that was probably in the back of our minds a little bit. I tried to keep stressing to our team that if we executed our game plan, and not worried about our opponent, everything else would take care of itself. I think we did that today.”

Peru dominated the game in the early going and their pressure eventually paid off as Noah Lederman drilled a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box and into the top right-corner of the net. Desso, Peru open CVAC gymnastics season with win

PERU | While the landscape of CVAC gymnastics may have changed for the 2018 season, one thing remained the same.

Peru looks like an early favorite to claim the regular season and sectional titles.

The Indians scored a 159.00-148.85 victory over the Plattsburgh High Lady Hornets in the first meet of the year Sept, 7, with Rylee Desso scored the win in the all around over PHS’s Morgan Hughes.

“It was so cool — something I have not done in five years of gymnastics,” Desso said, referring to the stranglehold that had been at the top of the podium by former Peru standout Delaney Brown.

“It was so cool to have the lead and my goal is to continue to improve every meet and make it to the state compe-

tition,” added Desso.

For Hughes, the goal for the season is to rise up the podium, as she has finished second in the sectional all around for the past three years.

“I am definitely working to improve but also to help my teammates improve throughout the season,” Hughes said.

“It’s nice to know there is going to be a close battle this year with Rylee and Lauren (Gonyo of Beekmantown).”

“We are hoping to continue our winning streak and we really want to enjoy this season,” said Indian coach Brittany Goddeau. “What is nice is that the team is so evenly matched and some of our best competitions are the ones that happen in practice.”
