Peru Applefest returns for 41st year
Peru man BACK TO SCHOOL sentenced for bulldog attack
Oldstyle family fun on tap this weekend
Dog-owner charged with misdemeanor counts By Elizabeth Izzo STA FF W RITER
PERU | The owner of a bulldog that attacked an 81-year-old woman last year has been sentenced to one year in jail. Michael V. James, 58, of Peru, was convicted of three misdemeanor charges — criminal contempt in the second degree, reckless endangerment in the second degree and “dangerous dog,” a violation of State Agriculture and Markets Law. James appeared in Peru Town Court last week, where in addition to the misdemeanors, a jury found him guilty of three counts each of dog running at large, unlicensed dog and dog causing harm to a person, all local law violations. Peru Town Court Justice Lawrence Cabana ordered James to pay $750 in fines, $205 in surcharges and provide a DNA sample/fee, according to the Clinton County District Attorney’s Office. » Dog attack Cont. on pg. 3

The 41st annual Applefest retu PERU | A Peru this w rns to eekend. 40-year-old adFile photo vertisement for Peru’s staple fall event, Applefest, features a smiling apple licking its lips with a simple message. “Come to the Applefest.” The events on tap back then are different from the ones slated for this weekend, when the annual Applefest returns to Peru for its 41st year. Square dancing. Apple doll-making. At the time, there was a pie-eating contest between area politicians, including the Town of Plattsburgh’s supervisor, the county sheriff and a senator. There most likely won’t be any pie politicking this weekend, but the family-friendly theme has prevailed through the decades — this year there will be games, wood carving, a dunking booth and a community barbecue.

CVPH president, county treasurer named ‘Women of Distinction’
Girl Scouts award Michelle LeBeau, Kimberly Davis By Elizabeth Izzo STA FF W RITER
County Treasurer Kimberly Davis and CVPH President Michelle LeBeau will be honored with the Trailblazer Award at this year’s Women of Distinction ceremony. Photo provided
PLATTSBURGH | It was 11 years ago when Treasurer Kimberly Davis fi rst ran for office in Clinton County. It was a special election. The county’s treasurer at the time, Janet Duprey, had left
office the previous year to run, successfully, for state Assembly. A former county legislator, Joe Giroux, was appointed to replace her until an election could be held to fill the remainder of Duprey’s term. That’s when Davis stepped in. Davis is one of two women chosen to receive this year’s Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York’s Distinguished Trailblazer Award; an honor bestowed for strength of character and community service as part of the annual Women of Distinction awards. » Awards Cont. on pg. 2
