Youth Climate Coalition put together the Plattsburgh climate strike last Friday, Sept. 20. Along with Plattsburgh, upstate New York students in Queensbury, Potsdam, Saranac Lake, Johnstown, Burlington, Middlebury, Albany and Utica had their own climate strikes as well. “We are currently experiencing a threat to the Adirondack Park, our national security, and the world’s human security,” the Adirondack Almanak said. “It’s our responsibility to do something about it now.”

The Plattsburgh climate march began at 10:20 a.m. Trinity Park downtown, where they marched to the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. The actual strike began at 11 a.m. Gathering at Amity Plaza on Rugar Street, the large group stood together with signs on climate change. People were invited to come up and voice their concerns on climate change and what society can do to prevent irreversible damage. See CLIMATE STRIKE » pg. 4

Comic Con brings pop culture to Plattsburgh Third-annual event larger, featuring more vendors, artists By Windsor Burkland STAFF WRITER

Alex Robinson and Keith Wheeler came from Vermont to participate in the third-annual Plattsburgh Comic Con dressed as their favorite anime characters. Photo by Windsor Burkland

PLATTSBURGH | Dozens of people, some dressed as pop culture’s most beloved characters, queued up outside the Crete Memorial Civic Center waiting for the doors to open to explore the memorabilia, eclectic merchandise, games and panels awaiting them inside. The third-annual Plattsburgh Comic

Con took place Sept. 21 and 22 attracting fans of science fiction, anime, comics, TV, film and video games to the largest version of the event yet. Although some people believe that being a fan of comics is a requirement, Event Owner and Organizer Samuel Chase said the familyfriendly event is based in pop culture and encompasses many different types of entertainment. “Some people hear ‘Comic Con’ and they think it’s just comic books but that’s pretty untrue,” Chase said. “We have so many things like handmade crafts, toys, collectibles, original artwork... We just bring this all together and create a community event. It’s almost like going to a fair.” See COMIC CON » pg. 2

Truck donated to Chazy Highway Department Old 1955 on display for commuters By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

CHAZY | Outside the Chazy Highway Department, just off Exit 41, sits a 1955 International R-170 truck, recently refurbished and repainted. Elwood Jennette, once the one who drove the truck along town roads, purchased the yellow vehicle in 1964, when he was 18 years old. Now retired and in his 70s, Jennette donated the truck to the Town of Chazy for display. “They worked on it during the

winter - a paint job, things like that,” Jennette said. “But it was really in mechanically good shape.” The truck was refurbished and painted to include a “55” on the side to commemorate the year the truck was made - 1955. Also on the side says the year the Town of Chazy highway department was established. A new plow was attached to the truck, made to look the same as they did back then. “We had this old plow up in the dump … this is about the size plows they used on these lower trucks back then,” Highway Department Superintendent Dan Nephew said. Von Dawson’s products range from horned and flowered headbands to harnesses with interchangeable wings, prices ranging from $4 to $65. Von Dawson said conventions are good places to fi nd unique items not commonly found in local areas. “There’s definitely a lack of it,” Von Dawson said. “You can’t find these types of items at Hot Topic. There is so much more to find.” The variety and uniqueness of all of the different genres and interests make for an entertaining environment according to Chase. However at the end of the weekend, Chase said the most rewarding part of the experience is seeing the whole event come together and watching people enjoy it. “When people are here and smiling,” Chase said. “That’s the payoff for me.” The next stop on the convention trail for

This year features more vendors, cosplayers, memorabilia, panels, celebrities and guest artists than before. The “Super Smash Bros.” tournaments kicked off at noon Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday next to Arcway Gaming’s virtual reality gaming set-up. Gamers faced off in two rounds: the first in “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,” then in “Melee.” The cosplay contest, with contestants dressed as soldiers, princesses, furries and more followed. The adults contest was at 3:30 p.m. Saturday; the children’s contest followed at 2 p.m. Sunday. Among the many attractions were the classic 1966 Batboat and “Stranger Things” wall set available for photos, and professional cosplay groups the 501st Rebel Legion and the Montreal X-Men. There was also a special “Kids Con,” a smaller room with snacks, coloring and story time to give parents and children a space to rest. CVPH hosts CPR training

Rabies clinic in Clinton County

Learning to save a life: With the help of the American Heart Association (AHA), CVPH held a four-hour learning course on heart-saving first aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillators (AED). During the course, participants learned how to save lives on dummies of different ages and genders. Above is one of the trainees performing CPR on an infant. “Heart Saver First Aid CPR AED is intended for people with little or no medical training interested in learning these potentially life saving skills or for people who need the course completion card for a job requirement (ex. coaches, child care providers),” according to the CVPH flier. “The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in all AHA courses and has developed instructional materials for this purpose.”

Keep your pets safe: The Clinton County Health Department held a Rabies Clinic at the Peru Fire Department for dogs, cats and ferrets. The clinic, held on Sept. 17, was free for Clinton County residents, but donations were accepted. All pets need their first vaccination between three and four months old. Much like humans, vaccines are created to help strengthen animals immune systems and protect them from harmful diseases. Rabies clinics are held often across Clinton County - pets must be over three months and leashed or in a carrier. If you are bitten by an animal, wild or tame, wash the wound throughly and seek medical attention immediately. Report the incident to your county health department and keep track of the animal that bit you. The only way to treat rabies is to get it before the symptoms set in. If untreated, the disease can ultimately lead to death. For more information, visit the Clinton County Health Department website at clintoncountyhealth.org.

“The Amazon is burning, deserts are growing, water supplies are dwindling and the ice is melting. The climate crisis is here today; the science is not debatable,” student Charles Olsen said during the strike. “This is the fight of our lives … the fight for the lives of all those who could come after us, the fight for life on Earth.” The students of Plattsburgh High School planted a sugar maple tree outside the school before the strike. They were allowed to miss class to join up with Beekmantown High School students, as well as students from SUNY Plattsburgh, who were coming from Trinity Park. “I bet dinosaurs thought they had time too,” one of the students’ signs said. “There is no planet B,” another said. The Rainbow Tribe, a drumming band, played a song about the Earth that involved the crowd. City of Plattsburgh Mayor Colin Read made an appearance to speak to the students. Also there to make a speech was guest-speaker Dr. Lauren Eastwood. “Our successes are always temporary, whereas our failures are final,” Eastwood said. “However, I see that as more reason to engage in activism, whatever form it takes.” ■

Peru holds Applefest

Plenty to do: The Town of Peru held its 42nd at Saint Augustine’s Church the weekend of Sept. 21 and 22. The annual event kicked off with the Applefest parade, featuring multiple apple-themed floats. The weekend included live music, a craft fair, rides, family-friendly games and Applefest food; a chicken barbeque was held Sunday afternoon. Though attendance for all is free, proceeds from vendors and drawings from the Applefest is used to fund local needs and outreach programs administered through Saint Augustine’s Parish. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris

Over 40 years of fun: The Peru Applefest has become a long-standing tradition in the community, this year being its 42nd. Applefest began in 1977, when the Saint Augustine’s Home and School Club came up with an idea for a family-friendly festival with food, music and fun. Ever since then, people around the North Country have made their way to Peru to attend Applefest. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

Living United By Dan Alexander PUBLISHER

Our area United Way campaigns are now underway and need your active support. Over the years I’ve had the great fortune to be a part of the United Way Campaign. I’ve seen first hand what the United Way is all about and how valuable they are to those in our communities. Obviously, charitable giving means different things to different people. Who among us wouldn’t give when we know the exact circumstances of the need? Who wouldn’t part with a few bucks a week if it meant a Life Flight Helicopter would come to the rescue of their family member or even themselves? Sadly many never recognize the value of those few dollars given each week. How a couple of bucks can impact the lives of so many or when those same few dollars plus many more may come to their own aid. Just like the devastating damage from a storm, fire or accident we never know what’s around the corner for any of us and there is nothing any of us wouldn’t do when we clearly see the immediate need. Unfortunately, the need isn’t always right there on the surface clearly visible to all. It’s buried in the everyday hectic life we all seem to live these days but, for many of those who suffer at the hand of misfortune, they need a helping hand. That’s where the Partner Agencies of the United Way step forward every day, dealing with both large and visible events as well as those private, behind the scenes family issues that affect so many across our region. Many of these volunteer agencies would cease to exist without our voluntary contribution either through the United Way Campaign or outright donations by a generous public. Through the United Way Campaign, 100% of your contribution can be channeled directly to a specific agency or agencies of your choice. Only through the United Way Campaign will your employer allow you to have a payroll deduction taken each pay that adds up to a significant dollar amount by year’s end. Only through the United Way Campaign can you join with other generous givers from around our region to create a major giving source to support these hard-working non-profit agencies. This allows them to focus their energies on serving those in need and not on raising funds. On behalf of all the agencies and the many volunteers who generously donate their time, and most importantly all those served by these dedicated agencies, thank you for your consideration in supporting this most worthwhile community campaign. No amount is too small to make an impact. ■ — Dan Alexander is the publisher of the Sun Community News

Fall eh.trepreneur ...

Both chambers took an oath To the Editor: Um, of course the voters will decide in 2020. And maybe the Russians will have a say too, as decorated Marine and former FBI director Mueller documented and warned against. And maybe the Ukrainians can have a say too, if the president can blackmail them with congressionally approved aid in return for dirt on his political opponents. You are being disingenuous if you pretend not to understand the political lay of the land regarding impeachment. It takes two houses, and smart Democrats realize impeachment is a dead end in the Republican controlled Senate. Both chambers took an oath to the Constitution, not a man or party. But one party is refusing to exercise the same oversight that they did so fervently with Democratic presidents. Ask yourself how Republicans would have reacted if Obama had invited the Taliban (The Taliban!!!) to American soil to negotiate. On the week of 9/11???!!! I thought we didn’t negotiate with terrorists! But, Mr. Trump hasn’t met a dictator he doesn’t admire. The lovely Saudis-who supplied the majority of the terrorists who flew into our buildings, he kisses their rings, and his elected son in law takes loans from them! It’s a damn shame Senator McCain (who I voted for) is no longer with us. He accurately described Mr. Trump, and the particular danger he represents. It seems to me that the Republican Party that I knew and supported has ceased to exist. What remains may as well be re-named the Trump party. Ask yourself, if there were 20 “Republican” Senators with McCain’s character, how far along the impeachment inquiry would we be? Of course, the traitor would be gone, and happily we’d have a President Pence. Take a new picture for your by-line: one with blinders on. — Mark Bealor, Saranac Lake ■ This letter is in response to Dan Alexander’s column “Let the voters decide” that appeared in the Sept. 21 edition of The Sun.

Zoning in Warrensburg To the Editor: Is the Town of Warrensburg selling its soul? On Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. the town’s Planning Board will be reviewing a site plan for a Dollar General store on the former Senior Center Building property at 3847 Main Street. That property is zoned “Hamlet Mixed Use,” allowing for “pedestrian-oriented mix of residential, office and smaller scale commercial use, generally in converted homes or other structures compatible with adjacent neighborhoods.” A Dollar General store would require a variance in such a zone. Warrensburg is familiar with the term “variance.” Stewart’s Shops required a variance to build in the same zone. Krystal Chrysler’s display lot, adjacent to the post

office, also required a variance from the existing zoning, also Hamlet Mixed Use. On what grounds were those granted? Zoning took a long time to be established in Warrensburg. The current plan was ratified in 2012. Such zoning is intended to preserve the quality of life in certain areas, usually residential, but often to preserve the ambiance of historic business or professional areas as well. By violating the precepts of a particular zone for whatever reason, the intention of the zoning plan is lost. One variance opens the door to anyone following and therefore should be entered upon with serious thought and trepidation. In addition to its wonderful mix of young families and retirees, one of the Town’s best assets is its historic hometown appearance, with numerous homes and commercial buildings dating to the turn-of-the-20 th century. That these are being maintained by their owners should be recognized and applauded, perhaps even rewarded. Manipulating well-intended zoning for short-term monetary benefit will destroy the fabric of our town, and the benefits to both visitors and home-owners. I urge residents to attend that meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 7 p.m. — Steve Parisi, Warrensburg ■

Gun laws need to evolve To the Editor: Mr. Cooper expressed some practical points and obvious common sense ones also. Certainly competitive shooting is fun, but somehow an assault weapon’s only purpose is to obliviate anything in it’s path. It legitimizes “destruction of human life targets!” By definition, it’s sole purpose in a war environment is to kill many very quickly. I respect the right of gun ownership, but I do get irked when people cite the Second Amendment to justify their views. This amendment was ratified on Dec. 15, 1791.

2019:

1. Many firearms, multitude of choices for leisure and protection. 2. Some gun owners still cite fear of tyrannical government. 3. 50 states, more people. 4. Social media radicalizes some and encourages action. 5. Too many social factors contribute to mass shootings. Laws must change when things evolve to stay relevant and fulfill their purpose, to protect people. Here’s an analogy to ponder. The first speed limit sign was introduced in 1901. (12 mph) Thirty-three years later Chicago imposed a speed limit of 30 mph due to a rise in fatalities. Stop signs, traffic lights, etc. were introduced to meet the challenge of a new era. Laws came about to protect drivers, pedestrians and properties. Why haven’t gun laws changed for the same reasons? — Ken Sausa, Lake Placid ■ This letter is in response to Anton Cooper’s letter “Federal gun legislation needed” that ran in the Aug. 24 edition of The Sun.

Clinton County treasurer honored Davis completes County Government Institute

CLINTON COUNT Y | Clinton County Treasurer Kimberly Davis was honored this week by the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) for graduating from the NYSAC County Government Institute. The ceremony was held at the NYSAC fall seminar in Sullivan County. The County Government Institute educational program is a collaboration between NYSAC and Cornell University to provide training to county leaders. Curriculum includes required courses on building consensus, financial management, ethics, management and the foundations of county government. Davis graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh magna cum laude with Bachelors of Science degrees in Business and Philosophy and a minor in Accounting. She was elected Clinton County Treasurer in 2013 after serving as a Branch Manager for a local community bank. In her time as treasurer, Kimberly has instituted ethics reform to the foreclosure auction, barring public officials and those with oversight from bidding; negotiated lower penalties for taxpayers in the last days of foreclosure to give them every opportunity to redeem their properties; and refinanced debt, saving county taxpayers over $2 million. Empowering county leaders to engage in civil and constructive dialogue on the challenges they face, the County Government Institute serves as a platform throughout the State to meet and discuss the unique issues of county government. “County leaders graduate from the Institute’s vigorous curriculum equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the increasing demands of local government leadership - now and in the future,” said NYSAC Executive Director Stephen J. Acquario. Scott Samuelson, NYSAC President and Sullivan County Legislator, encourages

county leaders to participate in the Institute coursework, which focuses on working collaboratively to learn and develop solutions to the challenges facing local government officials. “Graduating from the County Government Institute demonstrates a commitment to excellence in public service at the local level,” said Samuelson. CGI courses are offered at NYSAC’s upcoming Fall Seminar in addition to an annual Legislative Conference in January, and Finance School in May. “I applaud the mission of the County Government Institute, ensuring that government officials have the overall knowledge necessary to be effective within the structure of county government as well as with employees and taxpayers,” said Davis. Elected and appointed county officials can register for the Institute and actively participate in its programs, policy forums and informational sessions. PLATTSBURGH | The Plattsburgh Rotary Club is announcing a request for proposals from local organizations to benefit our community. The Club is asking that all requests for this Rotary year (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020) be submitted for review by Thursday, Oct. 31. The Club has a limited amount of money to be distributed to local organizations and therefore, the maximum grant that can be received is $500. These grants are given to organizations serving a larger population and a greater good, not to an individual. All grants are given toward special projects and not for the general operations of the organization or for fundraising. Specific events such as walks, golf tournaments, etc. will not be considered. Special funding is available for Youth-At-Risk programs that positively impact individuals under the age of 18. Please include the project title, organization name, contact information, funding amount requested, length of the program, the goal and summary of the project, any collaborative partners, the budget and any means of recognizing Rotary, if funded. Requests should be submitted to the Rotary Club at P.O. Box 86, Plattsburgh, NY 12901. The Plattsburgh Rotary Club works diligently throughout the year to raise money to reinvest back into local organizations as well as support worldwide health efforts led by Rotary International. SALMON FRY FOUND IN BOQUET RIVER Worldwide decline of salmon in rivers has led to restoration efforts By Laura Achouatte STAFF WRITER

ELIZABETHTOWN | Salmon are back. At least, for scientists and anglers, this past summer’s fi ndings in the Lake Champlain Basin give a new hope for the species. This summer, after more than 150 years, Salmon fry were found in the North Branch of the Boquet River. This discovery is one of less than a handful of naturally-reproducing Atlantic salmon that have been recorded in nearly two centuries. Most scientists agree that the removal of the Willsboro Dam just a few years ago - in conjunction with the restoration initiative - has been helpful to restoring the once abundant fish to local waters.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE SALMON

Coincidentally, the International Year of the Salmon is being recognized all over the world in 2019. The International Year of the

Salmon (IYS) is a conservation effort that is led by the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) and the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC). The focal year of the IYS is 2019, with activities continuing into 2022. Its Atlantic Chapter is headed from Scotland but has several organizations in league with their focus; including the LCBP in Canada and the United States. The Salmon fry discovery in the Boquet is almost symbolic to scientists involved in the International Year of the Salmon that have been diligent in conservation efforts to restore the salmon back to waters all over the world. “The International Year of the Salmon comes at an exciting time for Atlantic salmon restoration in the Lake Champlain Basin. The recent confirmation of natural reproduction and new advances in restoration science are good reason to celebrate this magnificent species,” said Dr. Eric Howe, the Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) Director, from the July 2019 press release posted on the LCBP website.

LAKE CHAMPLAIN BASIN PROGRAM, GENERATIONS OF RESTORATION

The LCBP out of Grand Isle, VT is a “Congressionally-designated initiative to restore and protect Lake Champlain and its

surrounding watershed.” They “work with partners in New York, Vermont, and Québec to coordinate and fund efforts to address challenges in the areas of phosphorus pollution, toxic substances, biodiversity, aquatic invasive species, and climate change.” Jim Brangan, Cultural Heritage and Recreation Coordinator with the LCBP spoke to The Sun. “U.S. Fish and Wildlife and New York Department of Conservation have been working together since 1971 to reintroduce salmon to the rivers and the Lake Champlain watershed. There are reports from colonial-era soldiers of horses refusing to cross streams teeming with salmon and use of pitchforks to catch them, with ease. There was one report from the Boquet River area that a 20 pound salmon was traded for a plug of tobacco – that is worth $600 in our modern day.” “What’s great about the International Year of the Salmon is that the work has spanned generations and will continue to do so, vital information and what works and doesn’t, will pass on to continue these efforts,” Brangan continued. Dams were built along the rivers around the industrial age. For Vermont and the Winooski River, and for New York, and the

Boquet River, the “vestiges of our industrial past” or dams used for several types of industry around the turn of the 18th century have been being removed in recent years. This has led to the recent finding of salmon. First, in the Winooski River, and now in the Northern Boquet. With the Rome Dam dismantling last year, it also remains to be seen if the salmon will present in that river. “The Au Sable River definitely has a viable habitat for this fish,” said Brangan.

SALMON IMPACT

NASCO explains that, “Salmon are an important biological and economic resource throughout the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans and the Baltic Sea (collectively referred to as the ‘salmosphere’).” The decline in salmon is a worldwide concern. Climate change and the leftovers of industry upon their spawning waters have contributed to that decline, as well as other human impacts. For now, the Boquet salmon fry gives encouragement and hope to the future of the species. The apex predator fish with “fight in them,” that are often described as fun to catch, has re-entered our ecosystem and can give insight into the future of the species and what steps to take next. ■

Adolfo boots three field goals in Saranac win By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

SARANAC | Tied 21-21, Garrett Adolfo was doing plenty of static stretching during the timeout at 2:02 remaining in Saranac’s varsity football game against Beekmantown Sept. 21. Adolfo, the Chiefs kicker, had cramping issues with his right leg earlier in the second half, forcing him to the sideline. However, there he was, working his right leg out as he was being called on to kick — and connect — on what would be the game-winner in the 24-21 win for the Chiefs over Beekmantown. “My leg felt terrible — I was cramping up since the fi rst drive after halftime,” Adolfo said. “I could not even feel my legs I was on the sidelines screaming because it hurt so bad.” Fighting through the pain, Adolfo connected on a field goal which hooked in from 32 yards out, giving the Chiefs a lead they would not relinquish. “My kicks always have a little bit of a left hook,” said Adolfo, who connected on three field goals and an extra point in the win. “I have never had a 10-point night just kicking the ball,” he added. “It is another type of weapon we are able to have,” said coach Dylan Everleth about his kicker. “You have teams now who can’t even

heart,” said Devins, who finished with a touchdown run. “The line was great and they made holes you could drive a truck through. We had a great week of practice and stayed focused through the game.” “Hunter, as a sophomore, he played the best game of football we have seen out of him, stepping up to be a leader on offense and make some big plays and he was all over the field on defense,” Everleth said. “You can’t ask for a better player because he is always coming off the field with a smile on his face. “We knew it was going to be hot and guys were going to cramp up and get hurt, but our team showed excellent depth and everyone did their jobs while they were in,” he continued. “Bryce stepped in, pushed through the pain and did what we asked of him. That’s all you can ask him to do.”

COUGARS strong from line in loss

Looking for depth, Everleth was able to turn to a number of players, including Robert Foley, Addison Kelting and Hunter Devins. “It was just a great team win,” Kelting said. “The line did great today and we did a good job blocking the secondary. Everleth said the team responded well after losing to Saranac Lake. “It started from Monday,” he said. “They got together as a team and it was a whole different week of practice — it just had a different feel and we played a different type of football here today then we have all year.” “I think this game will give us a lot of momentum,” said Recore. The result put four teams — Saranac, Saranac Lake, Peru and Beekmantown — atop the CVAC standing at 2-1. For the Eagles, Kaden Myers topped the 100 yard mark rushing, while Nate Finley had a pair of touchdown passes to Carson LaPier and a third to Matt Dion. ■
