‘A Beautiful Mind’ comes to Plattsburgh Author holds lecture and book signing By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

Act Three: Sylvia Nasar, the author of A Beautiful Mind, visited Cumberland 12 in Plattsburgh to give a presentation on John Nash after a free showing of the movie adaptation. Nasar was also there to discuss her newest book on Nash. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris

PLATTSBURGH | The National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI): Champlain Valley hosted “Illness & Genius:” A Beautiful Mind Program Oct. 2 and 3 to show a free screening of the movie “A Beautiful Mind”. Also making an appearance after the film showing was Sylvia Nasar, who wrote the original biography of John Nash, a Princeton mathematician who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Nash struggled with hallucinations and relationships due to his illness and was deemed the “Phantom of Fine Hall” on campus, as he would aimlessly wander. Nash and his wife Alicia both died in a car accident in May of 2015, but before that, Nash had, without medication, overcome his schizophrenia after 30 years and even won a Nobel Prize in Economics. His story was sensationalized through his revolutionary theories, mathematical games and the Hollywood film starring Russell Crowe. See A BEAUTIFUL MIND » pg. 5

Long-awaited Plattsburgh Kohl’s location opens Department store holds grand opening By Nathan Ovalle EDITOR

PL AT TSBURGH | Kohl’s officially announced its presence in Plattsburgh with a grand opening last weekend. The first 100 shoppers Saturday received $10 gift cards to celebrate the chain’s new location in Champlain Centre mall. One of those shoppers was Heather Nadeau, a Morrisonville resident making her first trip to a Kohl’s. “I’ve never been in a Kohl’s store and I’ve

heard a lot of good things about it,” Nadeau told The Sun. “I think the clothing is key, because they have a lot of good prices on stuff. And I can’t wait until this winter to see what they have on sale for Christmas. “It’s very nicely set up,” Nadeau added. But even for those who’ve been to a Kohl’s before, the Plattsburgh location may look a little different. “It’s one of our brand new prototypes,” store manager Kyle Siskavich shared with The Sun. “It’s our new 35k prototype - like an open layout, not a typical Kohl’s.” The Plattsburgh facility is one of four new Kohl’s stores the company is introducing this fall. The others are in Kentucky, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

Heather Nadeau of Morrisonville is helped by Kohl’s employee Gricelis Polanco during last Saturday morning’s grand-opening event at the store in Champlain Centre mall in Plattsburgh.

SALT TALKS

Annual summit: Need for salt reduction in Adirondacks By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER

LAKE PLACID | Wegmans is an upscale supermarket chain with exacting standards and some pretty firm ideas about snow removal in their meticulously groomed parking lots. “They didn’t even want their customers walking through slush,” said Phill Sexton, founder of an environmental consulting firm. But there was another problem. Especially with the onset of climate change, winter storms can fluctuate wildly, and the company was spending anywhere between $3 million and $10 million on snow removal. In an industry operating on razor-thin margins, such a broad financial unknowable was not acceptable. A salt conference at Lake Placid heard about the dangers of using too much salt to melt snow. At the city council meeting on Oct. 3, the council chambers were packed with those who support keeping the rec center open. Councilor Rachelle Armstrong gave a PowerPoint presentation on the four services under review. Armstrong’s budget presentation showed the costs, revenue and total net worth of each one. The city beach generated an income of $68,110 in 2018; however, costs came to $142,564, leaving a generated net worth of -$74,453. Projected costs all rose, with a revenue of $87,569 and costs of $140,295, leaving a total of -$53,726. The city marina, popular with tourists, calculated net results in 2018 as -$65, 476 after a revenue of $118,367 was subtracted from the total cost of $183,843. The projected costs and revenue in 2019 came out to $248,264 and $102,731, leaving a net worth of -$145,893. The Crete center, which hosts trade shows and indoor sports, had a total net worth of -$146,228. The costs came out to $285, 915 and revenue of $139,687. The projected net worth for 2019 is -$174,828, with costs being $318,853 and revenue as $144,015. Lastly, the Old Base Gym, which also includes a driving range, multipurpose rooms and events, showed that total costs in 2018 came out to $494,752. Total revenue was $218,974, leaving the net results as -$275,776. The projected results for 2019 include costs of $498,963, revenue of $237,070 and a net worth of -$261,893. One other solution the city council came up with, besides shutting down the rec center, was to renovate one of the recreational complexes throughout the city, specifically the Crete Center and Old Base Gym. budget shows how much costs for repairs or demolition would cost, such as asbestos abatement or debris transportation. Many residents of the city and those who use the Old Base Gym came to the Oct. 3 meeting and spoke on the subject. One of which was City of Plattsburgh Police Officer Brad Miller, who recounted his personal connection to the center and gave some ideas on how to generate more revenue. “When I was 14 years old, I used to sneak into the gym … it kept me out of trouble,” Miller said. “There are people that I’ve spoken to … ‘if the rates increase 20 percent to six dollars a month, would you do it?’ Everybody I spoke to said absolutely 100 percent … what that building is a community. It’s not a gym, it’s not a rec center, it’s a community rec center.” Others mentioned the general fund and how it can be used to enhance the services looking to be cut or renovated.

One of which was Steve Peters, the former superintendent of recreation for 10 years. “I would actually suggest what you think you can sustain as a contribution and then let’s work backwards from that point,” Peters said. “I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to build up these facilities. But it was never for me, it was for the people behind me that I know have changed their lives and I know have made a difference. The thing that is a little scary for the region is not the opportunities that they’ve had but the opportunities they won’t have if these facilities close.” Nothing was voted on during the Oct. 3 city council meeting about the recreation center. Mayor Colin Read mentioned that the vote will be coming up at the Nov. 7 city council meeting. Between then and now, the council is considering all the information gathered from the public and looking over the 2020 budget. It’s a very large building, it wasn’t a normal residential structure fire, so with the square footage it was good to have the extra help.” Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire. Nasar then gave a presentation on her new book, titled, “Act Three: The Recovery of John Nash” which covers the recovery at the end of Nash’s life. According to Nasar, she discovered the story of John Nash’s life while she was working as an economics reporter at the New York Times. “There are many stories of that rise and fall of remarkable individuals, but there are very few stories, much less true stories, with a genuine third act,” Nasar said. “Nash’s life had such a third act. It was that third act that makes Nash’s story resonates with people in different cultures all around the world. From China to India to Turkey, South Africa, Chile and, most especially, those who suffer from the devastating mental illnesses or loves someone who does … The world came back to John Nash after three decades of illness and it was that third act that drew me to his story in the first place.” Nasar then told a story about a time she was contacted by someone with schizophrenia who read her book. Sent in a dirty letter and written on colored paper, Nasar read the fan letter from the anonymous source. “It was signed Berkley Baby … the letter writer turned out to be a night rewrite editor at The New York Times before he, too, was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in the 1970s ,” Nasar explained. “Since then, he had adopted the name Berkley Baby. He was living on the streets of Berkeley, California near the university; a sad figure not unlike the Phantom of Fine Hall. His letter ended with these words: ‘John Nash’s story gave me hope that one day the world will come back to me too.’” After the viewing and presentation, Nasar held a meet and greet and book signing in the lobby of Cumberland 12. There was also information on mental illnesses and NAMI Champlain, which provides support, education and advocacy services for those affected by mental illness. NCMFG Day was founded in 2012 to educate the youth on what manufacturing is and, according to them, what it isn’t. “Manufacturers throughout North America in industries including metal fabrication and machining, plastics, food processing, chemical and biotechnology, and aerospace, among others,” NCMFG says. According to the workers there, it’s more of an action-packed career, what with the constant hands-on use of machinery and equipment. Beginner jobs, such as fixing machinery, are available, as well advanced-level positions, like programming robots. ■

starts, then it fades to light brown and then to clear or no smoke; a sign the chimney has no creosote buildup and is clean, ready for winter. Burning those hot fires every morning and night before bed did the job. Keep it hot and keep it clean. Time to walk the woods and mark the trees we will harvest for next year’s warmth. Thinning out the woods by taking out the nonmarketable trees and allowing the sun to get to the young hardwoods for growth is the plan. Thinking about the future is important. Time goes by fast. One minute you are a wild-ass kid, and then you look in the mirror and you are a grandfather. Hopefully we can pass down the good things we have learned and keep them from the pitfalls we fell into. Yeah, I have made many mistakes and did some very stupid things in my life. I live with the guilt of my mistakes; nobody must remind me. As the bible says, “Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone!” After our forest management course, it’s off to have fun. Handing down some gun safety knowledge and letting them feel the kick of a 20-gauge shotgun and hitting a paper target brings smiles to both of us. At the end of the day, we got our wood stacked, did a little forest management, learned some gun safety and how to handle a weapon responsibly. Dinner was locally grown grass-fed hamburgers, fresh vegetables from the garden and a little couch time. It was a good day. The kids know that farmers grow our food, not grocery stores and that milk and meat come from cows. They understand

Last week, at the very end of a murder trial in Dallas, Texas, a young man showed the world what true forgiveness is all about how. If you aren’t familiar with the case, let me briefly set the stage. Dallas police officer Amber Guyger has just gotten off duty and is returning to her apartment of two months in central Dallas in September of 2018. Unfortunately, after parking on a different level of the parking garage she accidentally went to the wrong floor in the building after a 15-hour shift. Finding the door ajar, she entered the wrong apartment where she found 26-year old Botham Jean, whom she assumed was an intruder in her home. Officer Guyger, who was still her uniform, pulled her service revolver and fired two bullets into Botham’s chest as he approached her. The court found Amber Guyger guilty of murder, and while many felt vindication over the ruling while others were very upset that the sentence of ten years for the murder of the young black man was just another unjust slap in the face to the black community. That’s when Bothham’s younger brother, Brant Jean, without telling his family, asked to step forward at the sentencing hearing. Brandt said that while he could not speak on behalf of his family, he wanted to offer Guyger his personal forgiveness, saying: “I love you just like anyone else and I’m not gonna say I hope you rot and die, just like my brother did, but I personally want the best for you.” “I wasn’t gonna ever say this in front of my family or anyone, but I don’t even want you to go to jail,” Brandt said. “I want the best for you because I know that’s exactly what Botham would want you to do, and the best would be, give your life to Christ... Again, I love you as a person, and I don’t wish anything bad on you,” he stressed. After delivering his statement, Brandt then asked the judge whether he could rise from his seat and give Guyger a hug. With the judge’s approval, he made his way down from the stand, as Guyger rushed to embrace him. As the two held each other tightly, privately exchanged their thoughts and cried for what seemed like a very long time, the priceless gift of his forgiveness was one no one would have ever imagined. While there were those who took exception to Brandt’s words and action as setting a terrible precedent, others realized that what Brandt extended to Amber was a true, heartfelt gift of human honesty based on his personal faith and in doing so set an example for us all. ■ — Dan Alexander is the publisher of the Sun Community News

We took our grandson out to the shooting range today. Gun safety was the primary goal but handing down a heritage was in the back of my mind. As grandparents we have the obligation to make sure the kids get our point of view from time to time. Grandparent’s purpose in life are to fill in the educational gaps. Parents are busy working and have their own challenges with living, so we grandparents must step in sometimes and take the helm. Turning off the kid’s cellphones and learning some woods-lore is where we try and steer the young. When the kids stay over, the morning starts with a good breakfast, no wimpy fruity cereal chow here; bacon, sausages, farm fresh eggs and blueberry pancakes from scratch, with homemade maple syrup and fried potatoes. You need good food that supplies energy when you put in a long day of work. Fall is here and winter’s winds will be blowing soon. Getting firewood into the cellar and stacked, cleaning out the woodstove, replacing the cracked firebrick and checking the chimney with a mirror start the day. Sharing the knowledge of what wood heats the house best, and what you don’t want to burn gets taught. After a quick lesson in starting the woodstove’s fire, it’s a peek at the smoke coming out the chimney. Black smoke

that loggers harvest trees, and that is where we get heat and lumber. Dirty hands and sore muscles are a sign of a good day’s work. Be proud of it! Tomorrow is Sunday, another good breakfast and maybe some fly-tying lessons, and how to cast a flyrod. Then again maybe we will walk the autumn woods with the dog and talk about Ruffed Grouse or pheasant hunting once again, a tradition we have followed many times since they were very young. They are growing up to be young men now, time flies! Hunting birds with a dog is the best. Watching a dog work a field and getting birdy is one of life’s pleasures, just like catching a trout on a fly. The kids need to feel that joy. Next year after the hunter safety course, the 20 gauge will come in handy. It may even get handed down, part of a grandfather’s heritage to pass on. That night we show them how to make those fried taters and deer steaks. They need to know how to cook as well as bringing home the groceries and putting fish and meat on the table. What are you passing on? ■

The defeat demoralized the nation, everything from politics to regular life was in disarray. 3. Adding insult to injury the Great Depression (1929) hit Germany extremely hard. (Unemployment, economic hardships, despair). 4. The aforementioned events provided the perfect environment for political and social upheaval. 5. Restoration of National Pride was mandatory, so nationalism became the reoccuring theme. The seeds have been planted. Unforeseen events were catalysts or precursors to the events that followed. However, pre-planning began in 1925. Hitler’s “political manifesto”(“Mein Kampf”) was his “how-to” manual. First to convert the nation and then slowly convert all aspects of life was his role as “Der Fuhrer.” I’m including a few excerpts from “Mein Kampf” to demonstrate how a political philosophy became a horrific reality. 1. “If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be beloved.” (Propaganda) 2. “The victor will never be asked if he told the truth.” (Propaganda) 3. “The great strength of the totalitarian state is that it forces those who fear it, to imitate it.” (Control) 4. “He alone that owns the youth, gains the future.” (Introduction of the young) See LETTERS » pg. 7

United States. I genuinely am concerned about public health and think that adult smokers should be encouraged to switch to vaping. Most lung damage cases so far are attributed to black market, adulterated products — mostly illegal marijuana products purchased off the street, cut with dangerous thickeners like vitamin E acetate. A flavored e-liquid ban will just push nicotine vapor products into the black market as well, where there are no regulations and no oversight at all. It makes no sense to do this. The prohibition of marijuana has failed and resulted in more dangerous products being sold on the street. I’m not sure what makes our policymakers think a prohibition on flavored e-liquid will be any different. — Tim Moody, Paul Smiths ■

To the Editor: E-cigarettes are under attack by both the federal government and several state governments, including our own. This should be alarming to anybody concerned about public health, as tobacco-smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. According to the CDC, cigarettes are in some way responsible for “about one of every five deaths in the United States,” totaling more than 480,000 every year (over 1,300 deaths per day). The Royal College of Physicians — the reputable medical body in the UK which originally linked tobacco-smoking to cancer in 1962 — published their report on the health impacts of e-cigarettes on April 28, 2016. They concluded that e-cigarettes are “unlikely to exceed 5% of the harm from smoking tobacco” and state that “there is a need for regulation … but this regulation should not be allowed significantly to inhibit the development and use of harm-reduction products by smokers.” Some hospitals in the UK are opening “vape” shops to encourage their patients to quit smoking combustible cigarettes. This is a stark contrast from the current scene in the

PLATTSBURGH | The clubhouse at the New Land Trust was broken into last week and called in on Saturday morning. The vandal or vandals broke multiple windows and wrote an unspecified racial slur on the chalkboard, according to a Facebook post by owner Hal Moore. “It is frustrating and saddening though I guess predictable that by offering this beautiful area to the public that a few will abuse that offer,” Moore said in a Facebook post to announce the incident. “However, we are still left to, literally, pick up the pieces and decide what the next step is.” The New Land Trust is a recreational area in Saranac open to the public. Impeachment too good To the Editor: As the great bard of baseball would say “holy cow.” Now I get it. Our dear leader was asking Pres. “There was about 60-70 people at the door for the ribbon cutting ceremony - a good turnout,” Siskavich said of the grand opening, which featured the ribbon cutting and refreshments. A soft opening was held the previous Sunday.

OPTIONS

Those attending the grand opening agreed that the more options for residents and those visiting the area, the better. “Having Kohl’s in the region continues to elevate the Town of Plattsburgh and the surrounding region,” Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman told The Sun. “This is something that’s been much anticipated for years. So to have another anchor store such as this will support the local economy but it will also drive people into the region that are

I have chided a friend for being a hoarder based on his multitude of boats, bikes, tractors, tools, etc.that he has accumulated. This might have been inherited from his father who left behind buckets of nails rusted into a solid mass, remnants of old tools, scraps of wood, etc. when he passed away. I was so glad that I did not have such a disorder. Then, my youngest daughter came to visit. “Mom,” I heard from the bathroom, “for someone with such thin hair, you have more hair products than anyone I know!” First of all, I did not need a reminder of my thinning tresses and, secondly, I personally believed I had “just enough” of this stuff. A good deal of the products were purchased to correct the “thin hair syndrome,” I guess, as I continuously tried to work magic with a blow dryer and a curling iron, I should acknowledge they were not working. I found five bottles of shampoo, including two blue ones to give those sparse strands a nice silver tinge. There were four tubes of gel (which are supposed to add volume to hair) as well as three cans of mousse... two for “body” and one for “silver.” Why did I keep these items? Well, it is not because I am a hoarder. So, to prove my point, it was time for an inventory. She accompanied me throughout the house as I attempted to prove my point. I decided to check a few other areas and, lo and behold, my clothes closet seemed to have exploded on itself. How did this happen? It had several bins of clothing that have not fit me in quite a while (but, of course, they may someday...) They had been out style for more years than they had ever fit me and, if I were to lose weight again, I could buy smaller clothes and would most likely want to. Then again, “everything old is new again” and styles do come back…

Next, I felt the need to travel to the closet in the kitchen. It held at least five aerosol cans of various contents, three spray bottles of furniture polish as well as a container of furniture wipes. I almost always wipe down dusty areas with a cloth dampened with water and I have yet to deplete a single container of polish in the ten years we have lived in this house. A glance in my pantry revealed at least 15 pie pans in various sizes and materials. Additionally there were pans that could produce four different sizes of cupcakes, six or seven variously shaped cake pans, sheet cake pans of multiple sizes, angel food pan, bundt cake pans, etc. I used to make and sell cakes for special occasions but have not done so in at least twenty years. But, one never knows when that need might arise. My final destination was down the hall to my sewing room. Let’s talk scissors. I have two small pairs of shears, two pairs of pinking shears, one heavy-duty pair and at least seven “conventional” pairs. This room also holds enough fabric to cover the city of Plattsburgh, some outlying areas and enough thread to hold it all together. I could live to be a centurion and still would never get to use even half of the material nor utilize sewing patterns I have accumulated, including approximately 40 purse patterns. Looking through other areas of my home brought the realization that I am apparently a “closet hoarder” due to the diminutive size of my “stuff” but a hoarder, nonetheless. So, dear friend I promise to TRY to quit harassing you about your inherited “affliction,” as I apparently have jumped “AB-HOARD!” Anyone wishing to visit is welcome to come over for a piece of pie or cake, or perhaps I could make you a purse? First, please let me go do something with my hair... ■ — Jan Gosselin retired from NYSDOCS after 25 years of service. looking for good deals and more shopping opportunities.” “I think this is wonderful,” City of Plattsburgh Mayor Colin Read told The Sun. “It just really adds to the portfolio of all the opportunities all of our residents have to shop in the Town of Plattsburgh. Kudos to Kohl’s for coming to town.” “It’s something different in Plattsburgh; they need something different,” Nadeau said. “And it’s a waste of the building space unless they do something with it.”

LONG TIME COMING

The prospect of a Kohl’s coming to Plattsburgh has been talked about for some time now. “It’s been years,” Read said. “They were talking at one point about moving into the former Ames building down in the town closer to the city line. I think it’s been in the works for at least half a dozen years if not 10 years. Maybe they were

waiting for just the right opportunity. And of course it presented itself when the former occupant pulled out, so perfect. Like hand in glove.” “This is an anchor store; it certainly benefits the mall and the uptown district,” Cashman said. “From Exit 37 through Consumer Square and up through Smithfield Boulevard, it’s busier here than it is on Wolf Road in Albany. WIth our connection to our Canadian customers and also the folks that are coming over from Vermont, a lot of people are coming here for a variety of reasons. Anchor stores such as Kohl’s usually encourage other stores to then say, why are you in that footprint, why are you in that community. Very similar to what happened with Hobby Lobby and a couple of these others, so I’m very confident that there’s some other big names coming in the near future.” ■

Firefighters battle abandoned house blaze PLATTSBURGH | South Plattsburgh Fire Department responded to Clinton County 911 Dispatchers for a report of a building on fire at 55 Sunset Drive in the Town of Plattsburgh on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 11:59 p.m. Mutual aid response was provided by the City of Plattsburgh and Peru Fire Departments. Morrisonville Fire Department provided standby coverage at South Plattsburgh Station One. Clinton County Deputy Fire Coordinator Greg Timmons also responded to assist with coordination efforts between the multiple responding agencies. No one was found at the scene on arrival and the building was on fire throughout. The New York State Police, City Police, Clinton County Sheriff and the Clinton County Fire Investigation Unit were on scene and worked to locate anyone with information or who may have been involved with the fire to determine the cause and origin of the blaze, which destroyed a long time unoccupied two story residential home at that location. Fire Department officials had to coordinate with the Canadian Pacific Railroad for temporary closure of the rail line as fire hoses had to be laid across the tracks in order to supply water for the fire suppression efforts. A CP Rail employee was dispatched to the site to coordinate the safe movement of a southbound freight train through the scene as fire equipment was being picked up. A NYSEG line crew was requested and responded to the scene to secure fallen power lines at the location. All responding fire agencies were clear of the incident and available by 3:30 a.m. None of the responding agency members were injured during the incident, which remains under investigation at this time. ■

Empty house: No one was on the scene of the fire, which took place at 55 Sunset Dr. in the Town of Plattsburgh.

ATTENTION CANDIDATES!

MLD building sold to bidder

New farmers market location: The City of Plattsburgh Common Council voted to move the Farmers and Crafters Market to building four of the six Municipal Lighting Department buildings that currently stand on Green Street. The building was awarded to Ormsby Trucking & Excavating, the lowest bidder with $319,000. “No asbestos abatement or demolition work will be performed on that structure as part of this project,” the city council agenda said. “The low bid included the cost of asbestos abatement of Building 4 and will be adjusted accordingly in the agreement to be signed between the City and the low bidder.” As a result, no asbestos abatement or demolition will take place on building four as a part of the project. The building will be redesigned to accommodate the Plattsburgh Farmers and Crafters Market. The vote took place during the Oct. 3 city council meeting.

Beekmantown opens new facility with wins

By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

Avery Durgan became the first Eagle to make the scoreboard operator change the numbers, opening scoring on an assist from Madison Tetreault in the seventh minute of play. Durgan would also score on an Olivia Scott assist in the final minute of play as the team would earn a victory over the Patriots. “The field was commissioned in the afternoon and we opened it with the girls soccer team,” said Beekmantown Athletic Director Greg Myers. “It was kind of a soft opening because we wanted to make sure everything was working. We asked AuSable Valley if they were up for it, and they said they were game, so we pushed the start time back to 5:30 p.m. and had our opening game.” Myers said it was a moment the players had been waiting for. “The girls were supper excited to be on there,” he said. “The general impression was the surface was great to play on and the atmosphere was really nice. One girl said it was nice to play a ball with a true bounce.” “The field is outstanding,” said head coach Pete Bursik. “It was so nice to be able to play on it and it was a great team win for us.”

Addison Kelting and Hunter Devins combined for 165 yards on the ground, as Devins scored the games only touchdown with 14 seconds left on the clock as Saranac scored a 7-2 win over Ticonderoga Oct. 4. The Sentinels took a 2-0 lead just over two minutes into the game on a safety after a bad snap led to a cover-up in the endzone. After that, the game remained scoreless until the end, with the Sentinels outgaining the Chiefs, 200-150.

The Beekmantown varsity football team flexed its defensive muscle for the second straight week, this time recording a 13-0 victory over Plattsburgh High as it completed a two-game sweep of Class B foes with a combined score of 39-0. Nate Finely opened the scoring on the new turf field with a nine yard touchdown run, using a fake throw to freeze a defender before cutting into the endzone. “I’m pretty sure I was past the line of scrimmage, but the fake worked,” Finley said. “It means a lot to be the first player to score a touchdown on this field. We have talked about playing on this field for a couple years now and to finally get out here and play on it is a dream come true.” The other key plays came on the defensive end in the second half, started by a Matt Dion 65-yard fumble return for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Nate Bordeau intercepted a pass to seal the win. “We want to make sure we are working on each others job and we rely on each other on defense to

make the plays we need to,” Bordeau said. “There were a lot of guys working very hard on the field, and we were able to play as a team,” Dion said. “Sometimes are luckier than others, and in this case, the ball just popped up into my hands and I when I looked up, there was nothing but green.” “I never thought we could get through these games without allowing a point,” Eagles head coach Jamie Lozier said. “In both games, they had chances to score and the bounces went our way. We have really focused on keeping our kids disciplined and staying with it. Bend but don’t break on defense and keep telling them no matter how far they get down the field, they still have not scored. Tonight they played well, made some mistakes, but they did a nice job when they had to.” Lozier also said the Hornets made Beekmantown earn their first home win. “Hats off to PHS. They were physical and they were more physical than us for a lot of this game.” Along with the win, the players also spoke about how impressed they were with the new home field. “It is beautiful,” said Bordeau. “I never could have imagined playing on a home field like this. I am proud to have been able to have been a part of the first team to run out on this field and get the win we did.” “I’m looking forward to 50 or 100 years of flawless football played by Beekmantown on this field,” added Dion. Lozier also was in awe of the new facility, calling the moment “surreal.”
