Veterans Day Ceremony held at American Legion Post 20 Attendees honored for their service By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

PLATTSBURGH | The American Legion Post 20 along Quarry Road hosted a Veterans Day Ceremony last Friday, Nov. 8. Vietnam veterans were honored at the event by Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, Sen. Betty Little, Assemblyman Billy Jones, Assemblyman Dan Stec and the Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman. At the ceremony, each elected official gave

Two generations of veterans: New York Assemblyman Dan Stec was the one to hand the pin to his father, George Stec, who served in Vietnam. The two embraced in a hug before George received his certificate. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris a speech thanking the veterans for their service. They spoke on the disrespect and mistreatment Vietnam veterans experienced after returning to America from the war.

Recreation complexes reviewed financially By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

PLATTSBURGH | The City of Plattsburgh Common Council again discussed the future finances of the Recreation Complexes throughout

the city, all of which are struggling with revenue. The City Beach, Old Base Gym, Crete Civic Memorial Center and the Marina are all public services that are part of the rec complex. About a month ago, there was talk about closing the Old Base Gym. This caused an uproar with some Plattsburgh citizens, who showed up to a city council meeting to voice their opinions on why the gym shouldn’t close and what the city can do to save money.

Marina in trouble: There are four recreation services to the public in Plattsburgh, one being the Marina. The Marina, according to research, tends more to outside tourists than Plattsburgh residents.

Veterans Day lunch special held at mall

Veterans thanked for service: The North Country Veterans Association held a discounted lunch event for veterans at the Champlain Centre mall on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. There, veterans were invited to eat at any of the food court establishments for a free lunch and raffle prize entry, while also given plenty of information about the group. Created in 1983, the North Country Veterans Association works hard to provide outreach, emergency relief, mental health counseling and more for veterans and their families. They have plenty of information and contacts for veterans looking for help of any kind. To find out more information about this program, visit the website at ncvva.org and donate if possible to help improve the association and the lives of veterans. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris

Stefanik also spoke, and mentioned how the American Legislature is working to help improve the lives of Vietnam-era veterans with new acts. “[The Blue Water Navy Veterans Act] was finally signed into law this past year, which restored the work of thousands of sailors who served in the territorial seas in Vietnam and Cambodia,” Stefanik said. “Two bills that I am proud to co-sponsor are the Keeping Our Promises Act, which updates the Agent Orange Act of 1991 by expanding the list of medical conditions recognized as stemming from exposure to agent orange. The second bill is the Lonnie Kilpatrick Central Pacific Relief Act and that expands the geographic territory for eligibility for those that have been covered under the Agent Orange Act.” After everyone spoke, the veterans were each called up, along with their position and years served, and given a lapel pin and certificate for their service. One of those 50 that showed up was David Graves, who served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 2005. “This was really something that’s long overdue,” Graves said. “I’ve been involved with the American Legion at Post 20 in Plattsburgh for probably about 15 years and every once in a while we talk about it and nothing really ever happens, but this group of people and politicians put it together and it’s going to be felt for a long time.” As a thank you to veterans and those actively serving in the military, prisoners of war and those missing in action, Plattsburgh hosted many ceremonies and events, as well as sales and free food throughout the city on Veterans Day. ■

There was no official vote that day, and at a recent city council meeting Nov. 7, Councilor Rachelle Armstrong went over the finances of each service and what the city can do to keep any from closing. “Questions about rec com’s finances, facility integrity and public use have been raised, but answers have been put on hold,” Armstrong said. “This is the year where we really had to put the finances under the microscope.” According to the presented numbers, the City Beach is located at 4 Beach Road in Plattsburgh, next to the public dog park. According to research, the upkeep of running the beach costs a total of $140, 295, not including debt service. The revenue of $87,569 leaves a total networth of - $52,726.

GETYOUR NEWS

The Old Base Gym in the U.S. Oval costs $498,963 to maintain and makes $237,070; the networth being -$461,893. The Crete Memorial Civic Center at 2 Beach Road costs the city fund $318,853 to run. With a revenue of $144,016, the networth comes to -$174,838. A 2015 report said that investments to fix the center could reach up to $3 million in costs. Lastly, the City Marina was looked at financially. Not including the Wilcox Dock, the Marina costs $248,624 for upkeep, makes a revenue of $102,371 and has a networth of -$145,893. These numbers come after Plattsburgh bought the Marina rather than renting it, and it was suggested at the budget review that the city stops managing it. “We would need an increase in revenue of 43 percent in order to make that shortfall,” Armstrong explained. “What we

are recommending is that we return to the original concept for the Marina, and that is to lease it.” Those in charge of the rec complex finances and more were asked to “sharpen their pencils” and continue to make cuts that benefit the services and keep them running. Though the budget is tight and can’t fix everything, there is strong support from the Plattsburgh citizens who want to keep these services open to the public. “The numbers that you’ve given here, we really do want to achieve,” City Councilor Mike Kelly said. “One of the things we want to do in the future is to invest more money in the programs that people use a lot - such as the beach and city parks. If we can make these four programs sustainable then we can focus more on the parks and beaches.” ■

Gillibrand unveils legislation to support family caregivers WASHINGTON, D.C. | U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has unveiled the bipartisan Credit for Caring Act, legislation that would support family caregivers by helping to alleviate some of the financial challenges they may face. Family caregivers are family members who take care of a loved one that has a medical or behavioral condition or disability. Gillibrand’s new push comes after hosting roundtables and meetings across New York with older adults and disability rights advocates and hearing directly from them about their specific needs. According to the most recently available data, there are 2.6 million unpaid caregivers throughout New York state. The Credit for Caring Act would give eligible family caregivers a tax credit of up to $3,000 to assist with out-ofpocket expenses related to caregiving. The tax credit would help families cover the myriad of expenses associated with

caregiving, such as transportation, home modifications to accommodate a family member, and training or education for the caregiver. This legislation would be a first step toward providing much-needed financial relief for caregivers across New York. It would also help allow older adults and people with disabilities continue to live independently in their homes and stay in their communities with their families. “When family caregivers take on the expenses associated with the life and well-being of their family members, the expenses can really add up and lead to significant financial stress. Family caregivers deserve to be supported for the extra responsibilities they take on in their role,” said Gillibrand. “One way to do this is through the bipartisan Credit for Caring Act, which would provide many family caregivers with a tax credit of up to $3,000 a year to help assist with the

out-of-pocket expenses related to caregiving. I am proud to be a part of this first step toward providing some much-needed relief for caregivers from some of the financial challenges they face, and I urge my colleagues to support this bill.” “We thank Senator Gillibrand for co-sponsoring the bipartisan Credit for Caring Act. This critical legislation offers a much-needed tax credit to help support our nation’s family caregivers who take on physical, emotional, and financial challenges in their caregiving roles. Family caregivers make it possible for older adults and people with disabilities to live independently in their homes and communities,” said Beth Finkel, state director, AARP New York. In addition to supporting the Credit for Caring Act, Gillibrand has co-sponsored the Social Security Credit for Caregivers Act, which would provide retirement compensation to individuals who had to leave their job to care for a family member. ■

More than 2.5M kids participated in state library summer reading program NEW YORK | More than 2.5 million students and children statewide participated in the 2019 summer reading program, an increase of approximately 134,000 participants over last year’s program, the New York State Education Department and State Library announced recently. In addition, the State Education Department announced results from its partnership with the myON by Renaissance e-book platform, which offered free access to thousands of enhanced digital books to children and their families. From May through September 2019: 118,569 books were opened/browsed, 114,128 books were read, and 1,635,585 minutes of reading were logged within the myON platform. “The free, annual summer reading program is a tremendous educational resource for our children and their families,” said Board of Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa. “Congratulations to the 2.5 million children and teens who participated in a public library summer reading program this year. We encourage all students to continue in the joy of reading throughout the year and use all the resources and programs offered at their local library.” “We are proud of every child’s summer reading achievement this year and thank the librarians, educators and parents across the state for encouraging their students and children to participate in the summer reading program,” said Interim State Education Commissioner Beth Berlin. “I encourage libraries to continue to partner with schools and community organizations to promote the importance of reading year-round.”

The State Library partners with 23 public library systems, 756 public libraries and 311 neighborhood branches statewide every year on the summer reading program. The free, annual program is supported by the State Library in conjunction with partners like the State Assembly and Senate, Hunger Solutions New York, the New York State Reading Association, 4-H, New York Council for the Humanities, and the New York State Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs Inc. and the School Library Systems Association of New York State. The program gives children the opportunity to access the vast resources of New York’s public libraries to support their summer reading. Participants receive reading lists and book recommendations and engage in learning activities at their local libraries. At the end of the program, participants receive formal recognition for their reading achievement. Next year’s summer reading

Readers logged into myON to access a digital library of more than 6,000 e-books using any webenabled device. Readers were offered an option to download up to 20 books at a time through a free app for reading offline, as well as resources and tips for parents and educators, including on-demand videos, tip sheets, strategies and more to support meaningful family literacy experiences. Access to free digital children’s books was available for New York State students and families courtesy of myON by Renaissance from May through September 2019. Many public libraries also offer snacks or meals to ensure children have access to healthy food year-round, including when school is not in session. In 2019, 133 public libraries were approved to serve summer meals or snacks through the Summer Food Service Program and Hunger Solutions New York. The Summer Food Service Program is a federally funded program that enables qualified organizations – including public libraries – to serve free meals to kids and teens in low-income areas. To the Editor: The Affordable Care Act, Republicans hate it and many Democrats don’t understand it! Republicans call it “Obama Care” because anything President Obama did was wrong in their eyes. The truth is before the Affordable Care Act Americans with “Pre-Existing Conditions” had to pay unbelievable premiums for Health Insurance. Both young and old had to pay these high premiums and companies like Mutual of Omaha, Travelers, Blue Shield and many others were making profits that were over the top. In my own case my wife and I after retiring found that because we had minor Pre-Existing Conditions, we had to pay upwards of $10,000.00 in premiums and each of us had a $5,000.00 deductible before the insurance kicked in! Many of our friends were in the same boat once they stopped working. As we honored those who served in the military earlier this week on Veterans Day, we were reminded of a task not yet completed. Several years ago, The Sun joined with the New York Press Association and newspapers in a nationwide effort to support the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund “Wall of Faces” Program. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is dedicated to honoring and remembering every person whose name is inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Wall of Faces campaign is an effort to preserve the legacy of those who sacrificed all in Vietnam by finding a photo to go with each of the more than 58,000 names on The Wall. Since 2013, newspapers from around the country have participated in the effort with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Faces Project to find the missing photos of those listed on the WALL. When we joined the effort, only one state had found all its photos and more than 16,000 were missing. It looked like an impossible task at that time. Today, more than 40 states have found all their photos and there are only approximately 400 left to find. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is now asking every newspaper and newspaper organization to join the “Wall of Faces Program” to find the remaining missing photos to forever honor our heroes from Vietnam who gave their all for us. We encourage you to check out the website vvmf. org/Wall-of-Faces and share the link with others who might have information for one of the missing faces in an attempt to help bring the project to a successful completion. If you have any information we ask you to contact Latosha Adams, manager of online communications for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, at: 1235 South Clark St., Suite 910, Arlington, VA 22202; 202-765-3774 (phone); 202-330-0960 (fax); or ladams@vvmf.org. ■

Changes on city council Barbell to replace Armstrong, DeDominicas takes over for Ensel By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

PLATTSBURGH | This year’s local election means new faces on the City of Plattsburgh Common Council. Both Councilors Rachelle Armstrong and Peter Ensel announced their retirement from the council back in March, leaving seats in Ward 1 and Ward 4 open for the 2019 election. The voting totals below are based on the unofficial poll results on

the Clinton County Government website, as absentee ballots haven’t been counted yet. Democrat Rachelle Armstrong was elected for the Ward 1 council seat in 2013; she was re-elected in the 2016 election. Ira Barbell was elected to replace Armstrong once her term is up. Ira Barbell, a democrat himself, defeated Republican William Ferris Jr. 336 to 162, or 67 percent to 33 percent, in the 2019 race. “I think Ira Barbell is going to be a truly brilliant councilor,” Armstrong said. “I think he’ll hit the ground running and has already been really involved for quite some time now.” As for Republican Peter Ensel’s seat, Democrat Paul DeDominicas will be taking over for Ensel, who took the Ward 4 City Council seat in 2016. DeDominicas ran

“This has been a real adventure for me,” Armstrong said. “I’ve been in office since 2014 and I learned a lot, I’ve been happy to serve, it’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride at some points. I’m really happy that such a fine candidate is going to occupy this seat. I’m happy and going to spend time with my grandkids and travel.” ■

COLUMNIST

I grew up on a small farm and have many memories of the simple things in life that such a rural lifestyle provided. Our small herd of 18-20 cows was hand milked. There was no tractor and a team of horses provided the “power” to pull a plow, haul firewood from the woods, etc. There was no hay baler; the hay was “bunched” and loaded onto a wagon by hand. Our new calves became family pets. As a result of this aspect of my early life, I have always been intrigued by old abandoned farms and the stories they undoubtedly hold. My daughters, my sister and I have what others might find to be a strange hobby. Some may even consider it trespassing. I think of it more as an offering of respect. Without disturbing the surroundings, we enjoy strolling around these often decrepit and overgrown sites. The barns are slowly being reclaimed by trees and vines and, most surely, many animals are finding protection in them. If you close your eyes and open your mind you can see the breath of the cattle on a cold winter day as they wait patiently to be milked, the slow stroll of an old farmer as he yet again wakes up before dawn to begin his day. Rusty, long-forgotten equipment is sitting in an overgrown field as if someone meant to come back to it the next day but, instead life just stopped. We enjoy looking into the windows of the old houses. Sometimes they are left as it the person just walked out the door, leaving behind dishes in the sink, the newspaper on the table and perhaps the remnants of a farm wife’s mending. All a sad reminder of what was once a thriving household, inhabited by a family who started the day with a hearty breakfast and good conversation. In my mind’s eye I see a house that was once a hub of activity. I see a mother hanging sheets on a clothesline, kids in the yard playing tag or hideand-seek and a man out in the back field behind a plow being pulled by a team of horses.

Holy Angels Church: Main St., Sunday: Mass 10

I sometimes wish there was the possibility to return to a simpler time but, sadly, our society has moved beyond the wonder of those peaceful times. My memories may have faded a bit but the principal of that life will never leave me. People had respect for hard work, their animals, their property and their neighbors. Everything you had was earned, not handed to you. There was compassion and kindness extended to those around you. Instead of living in a city full of people you didn’t know, you lived in a town or village where your neighbors had lived in the same house for generations and you most likely saw them every Sunday at church. I felt a connection in my little world which consisted of the small “town” of Chazy Lake. My first four years of school were under the tutelage of Delia King who taught all of the classes in the little one-room schoolhouse. Any tragedies that might occur in our community were eased by the support and assistance of the neighboring farmers and their families. No matter if it was a barn fire or a tragic death, you could be confident in the fact that you had the support of everyone around you. Today life runs at a much faster pace. People rarely take the time to get to know their neighbors, let alone members of their communities. It is difficult for many to feel compassion for someone they have never met and, as the newspapers and social media are drowning in negativity, perhaps we have become desensitized to it. I am thankful for memories which can bring me back to a time which has always provided serenity and calmness at times when those emotions can be scarce. If SUN readers have time during this Thanksgiving season, take a minute or two to greet a neighbor or give a quick call to a friend or relative that you have not heard from in a while. Make some memories. ■

Sandstoners too much for Eagles PLATTSBURGH | The Potsdam varsity football team was able to use a big, talented line to control the tempo against the Beekmantown Eagles in their Nov. 8 meeting in the Class B state playoffs, rolling to a 30-0 win and advancing to the quarterfinal round. After an early exchanging of possessions, including a fumble recovery for the Eagles and an interception by the Sandstoners, Potsdam scored on two of it’s next three plays — with an onsides kick recovery in between — to take a 12-0 lead after the first quarter of play. The lead would extend to 24-0 at halftime and 30-0 through three, which would be the final score. The Sandstoners were able to pressure the Beekmantown offense in the backfield and create holes on offense with their large offensive line, which held the Eagles below their season averages while forcing five turnovers.

Beekmantown’s Kaden Myers was named the offensive player of the game for the Eagles, while Connor Mcginnis was named the defensive player and Grant Decker received the sportsmanship award. The Eagles ended the season at 6-3, having won back-toback CVAC and Section VII/Class B championships. ■

Eagles return to Middletown By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

BEEKMANTOWN | The Chazy varsity boys soccer team is heading back to Middletown next weekend, seeking their 10th Class D state title and third in a row after scoring a 1-0 win over Lisbon in the regional finals Nov.9. “I thought we defended so well today,” said Eagles coach Rob McAuliffe. “That is a very good Lisbon team and they outplayed us in parts. As much possession as they had in our half of the field, we did not give them many good looks. It showed how well our guys played back, how organized they were and how much trust we had in Gabe Huchro.” “We wanted to constantly keep the pressure on them,” said defender Colby Drake. “That is what coach always talks about and we were able to keep the pressure on them.” “Once we were able to contain there was not much they were able to do getting the ball into the box,” added Dale Gonyo. “The defense worked well together throughout the game and the scoreboard showed that.” “We had to put on constant pressure and get the ball,” added Jeremy Juneau. The Eagles lone goal came in the 25th minute of play after a foul set the Eagles up with a direct kick 44 yards away an to the right of the net. Heath Lucas took advantage of the wind at his back, putting the ball into the box where Riley Hansen was able to rise above the rest of the players and flick the ball into the net.

Cougars fall in Class B regional play

“I was focusing on losing my mark, but that was very tough because he was on me the whole game and was very strong, but I was able to get away and get up as high as I could to get my head on it,” said Hansen. “After that, it was blurry.” Hansen had another golden chance in the 37th minute, controlling the ball in the box and getting a turn-around shot on frame, but the ball deflected off the crossbar. In the second half, the Eagles were able to defend throughout the 40 minutes, limiting Lisbon to three shots in the half as Huchro finished with four saves in the game. “We knew they would generate more offense so we prepared for that and knew we had to stay organized,” McAuliffe said. “The boys did exactly what they needed to do to win this.” Hansen also played in the defensive third in the final minutes of play to keep the Lisbon attack at bay. “We were really focused on making sure none of their forwards got past our defenders and that we were able to clear deep when we got the ball,” Hansen said. The Eagles (19-0-1) will return to the Class D semifinal round for the 20th time since 1996, where they have held a 13-6-0 record in the semifinal game and a 7-4-2 (co-champions awarded for tie) record in the state title game. Their semifinal opponent will be a familiar foe over the past three years, as they will face Mount Academy, who the Eagles defeated for the 2019 state title and shared the 2018 title with. The state semifinal will be played Saturday, Nov. 16, 4 p.m. on the Faller Turf Field in at Middletown High School, with the winner playing for the state title Sunday, Nov. 17, 1 p.m. on the Faller Grass Field. ■

HERKIMER | Northeastern Clinton was unable to advance in the NYSPHSAA state playoffs Nov. 5, falling 4-1 to Central Valley Academy in the regional semifinals. Marlie Sample scored the lone goal for the 17th ranked (NYSSWA) Cougars in the 61st minute, credited for the goal on a corner kick, cutting into a 3-0 lead for fifth ranked Central Valley on goals from Megan Canipe and two by Reilly Rich, giving her 151 career goals. Jazmyne Gillette scored the final goal for CVA in the 73rd minute.

CHIEFS FALL TO SCHUYLERVILLE

Saranac and Schuylerville each got chances early, with Branden Ashley making key saves early and Zashon Abrams and Nik Hamel having chances turned aside by Schuylerville before Ian Winchell scored in the 31st minute to give the Horses a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Schuylerville proved to not be satisfied with the one goal lead, scoring in the 43rd and 67th minutes, capping the shutout at 3-0. ■

Eagles fall to Hammond in regional finals By Keith Lobdell

“Olivia was huge this year and came into the season with a different mentality and when we needed her the most she stepped up and made some phenomenal saves,” Signor said. The Eagles were able to contain the Hammond defense throughout most of the game thanks to timely plays by the back four. “Willow Herz did a great job doing what she could marking,” Signor said. “They were a physical team, and that was one of our biggest issues. We were unlucky on the chances we had on offense.” Signor said the Eagles grew a lot from the start of the season to winning the Section VII/Class D champion. “When we started out 0-5 a lot of people thought the season was going to be tough but they worked hard to improve and I could not be more proud of them. Hopefully we can come back next season and defend,” Signor. ■

SPORTS EDITOR

BEEKMANTOWN | The Chazy girls varsity soccer team was unable to find an answer for the Hammond defense, dropping a 1-0 contest in the Class D regional finals Nov. 9 at Beekmantown. Olivia Rotella made nine saves for the Eagles, keeping Hammond off the scoreboard throughout most of the game, with the lone goal coming on a cross that was deflected in the box in the 73rd minute. “We started to play frantic and once you start doing that, it is hard to get back to the style of play we are used to which is keeping the ball on the ground and getting it to feet,” said Chazy coach Sam Signor. “We were just clearing it and Hammond was right there to bring it back in.” Signor also said Rotella was a big part of the season as a senior in net.

Chiefs rally for C girls title By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

ELIZABETHTOWN | Throughout the 2019 girls cross country season, the Saranac Chiefs were waiting for their moment. After falling to the Saranac Lake Red Storm three times throughout the season, the Chiefs made their statement clearly Nov. 8, defeating the Red Storm to retain the Section VII/Class C championship at Cobble Hill Golf Course. “The girls saw them coming back to us throughout the season,” said Chiefs coach Jim Medeiros. “Halfway through the season I would not have said we would have won today but I saw us picking up time through the second half of the season and into last week. If that had been a dual meet, we would have won with our sixth runner. We believed we had an opportunity. They worked hard and turned it around.” Coach Matt Medeiros said the key was to gt runners to break up the top scoring harriers for the Red Storm in order to close the gap. “I think it came down to breaking up their top three,” he said. “We had numbers for depth but we had to break their top runners up, and girls like Gillian Miner (19:47.2) and Danielle Borner (19:55.4) were able to do that.”

“They had really good seasons and came out really strong today,” added Jim Medeiros. “Kaelyn Fay has run really well the last couple of weeks and Molly Denis came up big today.” “We have been coming from behind all season with this on our minds,” said Rachael Woodruff (17:35.2), the Class C and overall Section VII individual champion. “We have been working hard with this goal and to accomplish it with this team has been awesome.” “I think I have been able to improve through the season,” said Miner. “It was good to win the title and I hope we can have some fun.” “It was pretty hard race but definitely worth it,” added Borner. “I hope everyone on the team can do their best next week.” The Chiefs will send their top seven runners to the NYSPHSAA championships next week at Plattsburgh State, including Woodruff, Miner, Borner, Mackenzie Converse, Angelena Fay, Denis and Kaelyn Fay. The rest of the sectional Class C team will include AuSable Valley’s Lily Potthast, who placed second overall in 18:24.4; Nora Graves of Plattsburgh High (19:39.2), Gwen Mader of Saranac Lake (19:51.7), Sara Crippen of Peru (19:52.1) and Katie Samperi of Saranac Lake (20:08.9). “I have been wanting to go as a team

The Beekmantown Eagles will also

represent Section VII as the Class B champion, the lone school in the classification. Memb ers i nclude M i k ayla Ha mel, Kayler Grizzle, Alice Saliba, Raelin Ko and Phoebe Eldredge. ■

Catania (15:10.5) led Peter (15:11.6) and Andrew Fogarty (15:27.9) to the finish line. Tucker Jackobe and Sam Ash placed seventh and eighth among Class C runners, while Justin Duprey was 10th, rounding out the seven runners the Red Storm qualified for the state meet. The five runners going to states as members of the Section VII team include Thomas Gilbo, who placed fifth in Class C, Ian Campbell of Plattsburgh High, Spencer Daby of AuSable Valley, Andrew Woodruff of Saranac and Sam Carter of Saranac.

Connor Goodwin of Beekmantown was the top finisher for the Eagles, who won the Section VII/Class B title Nov. 6.

ELIZABETHTOWN | Blustery winds and cold temperatures were not enough if anyone was hoping the weather could help them catch the Red Storm. Saranac Lake easily defended their Section VII/Class C championship Nov. 8 at the Cobble Hill Golf Course in Elizabethtown, taking the top four spots in the Class C race (four of top five overall) and defeating Plattsburgh High by a margin of 17-70. The sectional title defense gives the Red Storm the chance to defend their NYSPHSAA state championship Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Plattsburgh State Field House complex. The race was led by a trio of Red Storm runners, as James

EAGLES ADVANCE TO STATES

Indians repeat as Class B champions By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

SARANAC | After the first two sets had

added Higgins. “We had to work hard to get where we are, and I’m so proud of everybody.” Lauryn Clary had 33 assists on offense, while also providing six points from the service line via the ace.

Plattsburgh High’s Grace McMahon attempts to place a shot against a pair of Beekmantown defenders in the Section VII/Class B semifinal round Nov. 6. The Hornets scored a 3-0 win over the Eagles to advance to face Peru Saturday. Photo by Keith Lobdell Plattsburgh High and Peru tied in the Section VII/Class B volleyball final Nov. 9, the Indians took control, winning the final two games and repeating as sectional champions. Marie Higgins had 23 kills and 14 digs as Peru (15-2) scored a 28-26, 14-25, 25-20 and 25-18 win over the Hornets (14-4). “I am so proud of our team right now,”

“I’m really excited,” she said. “I’m really proud of my team for pulling this out. After losing the second set, we played with our hearts and did what we had to do.” Julia Prescott also had six aces, while adding 13 digs and seven kills. “I’m just so excited right now,” said Prescott. “We played some really close matches with

Plattsburgh and we pulled out all three so it’s awesome. I love that we can win this final.” Molly Timmons led the team receiving the ball with 36 digs in the game. “I’m extremely proud right now. We didn’t hang our heads and pulled through. We went out and did our thing,” she said. “It’s pretty exciting that we pulled it out in my senior year,” said Teagan Seymour. For the Hornets, Lily Snide had 27 digs and 23 assists, while Alexandra Hartnett had 12 kills, four aces and four blocks, with Grace McMahon adding nine digs and six kills. The Indians will play the winner of the regional semifinal round noon Saturday, Nov. 16, at Beekmantown High School.

HORNETS DEFEAT EAGLES TO REACH FINAL

Solid receiv ing and limiting the Beekmantown offense on their own serve were keys to Plattsburgh High, as they scored a 25-16, 25-12 and 25-22 win over the Eagles in the Section VII/Class B volleyball semifinals Nov. 6 One shift for the Hornets was having Alexandra Hartnett play on the back row,

getting key digs in the first two sets and adding two big blocks in the final set. “Being 5’11” it is not very easy to be a defensive player, but I was able to do my job and I am very pleased with the way I played tonight,” Hartnett said. “I had not had the chance to play defense all year and asked to play some on the back row.” “I love playing with this team and we played well together and have a great experience,” said Grace McMahon. “If you can stop their serve it builds you up and stops them from going on runs.” Gianna Dejesus was big from the outside attack position with several key kills. With Hartnett in the back, Arianna Gowett was a factor on the front line, contributing on blocks, including a stuff on the final point of the game after Beekmantown had mounted a comeback thanks to a quality service game by Jenna Begor, where the Eagles earned six straight points as part of a run that turned a 21-13 set into a 24-22 score before Gowett hit the match-winning block. ■ — See more from these games at suncommunitynews.com/sports

Anna Brown led the Bobcats with nine aces from the service line and five assists. “I’m very proud of us first of all because we work really hard in practices and even though we had a tough season, we came back really hard and we won,” she said, “I’m just really proud of everyone and how hard we work through the season and have fun to win,” added Chelsea Guay. Elise Hogan added six digs and four kills along with a strong game from the service line. “We had a tough season at the beginning, but we fought for the win, and we really wanted it today,” Hogan said. “We had our eyes set on it, and came out more tough.” “I’m really proud of our team,” added Jadyn LaValley. “We pulled it together. We had a tough season, but we pulled it together and played a great game today.” Cora Barnaby had a team high eight kills, while Allie Barber had seven digs and five assists.
