State raises CCC AND POTSDAM tobacco SIGN MEMORANDUM buying age Vaping juices still on shelves By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

PLATTSBURGH | The State of New York officially raised the age of tobacco purchasing from 18 to 21 on Nov. 13. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill in July, 120 days before the new law took effect. New York is the 18th state to raise the smoking age to 21.

Guaranteed admission for all transfer students Official signing: The two presidents and vice presidents from both colleges got together at the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing to officially sign the memorandum, ensuring the acceptance of CCC students to Potsdam.

“By raising the smoking age from 18 to 21, we can stop cigarettes and e-cigarettes from getting into the hands of young people in the first place and prevent an entire generation of New Yorkers from forming costly and potentially deadly addictions,” Cuomo said in a statement back in July. As a result of this law change, New York tobacco shops are preparing by reminding their customers of the age change. New technology is helping these stores better scan IDs, rather than just looking at the age. This ensures that the I.D. is legitimate. “Starting [November 13], no vape shop owner will sell to anyone under the age of 21, those are the laws,” owner of Plattsburgh Vape Co. Earl Dahl said. “I have a tablet that scans every single ID that tells me if it’s fake, tells me if it’s real, if it’s expired - it’s full proof registration that goes through state sourcing.”

PLATTSBURGH | Clinton Community College (CCC) held an official signing of the new memorandum between CCC and SUNY Potsdam on Nov. 14. The two colleges signing off on this memorandum guarantees admission of transfer in Potsdam for all students of CCC who earned their associates degree and have a GPA of at least 2.0, including their credits. The official signing took place on the first floor of the CCC Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and President of Clinton Community College Ray DiPasquale, SUNY Potsdam President Kristin Esterberg, SUNY Potsdam vice president for Academics Bette Bergeron and Clinton Community College Vice President for Academics John Kowal were there to speak at the signing. “Students who want to go to Clinton have a seamless pathway to go to an outstanding four ear school - Potsdam,” CCC President Ray DiPasquale said. “It gives our students one more opportunity to have a chance to move on and achieve the dreams that they’ve always had and with no barriers in the way. Do your homework, do your schoolwork, graduate from Cinton, and you’ve got an automatic acceptance.” Some majors, like education, require a higher GPA or special courses. SUNY Potsdam also includes the Crane

CCC open house welcomes students High schoolers prepare for college By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

Finding the right major: Tables at the open house included different programs that could interest incoming college students. High schoolers were invited to ask as many questions as they could to find what they are looking for major-wise. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris

PLATTSBURGH | Clinton Community College hosted an open house for high school students to tour the school and learn all it has to offer. Held at the William H. Forrence Center, Gymnasium tables with different majors, information and clubs were set up for the students to explore and ask any questions they may have. “The open house gives [students] an opportunity to talk to faculty directly, meet different programs, begin to see what interests they have,” President of Clinton Community College Ray DiPasquale said. “Everyone from our council center to athletics - it gives them a taste of the college. The idea is to bring high school students on campus to give them the opportunity to experience college a little bit and show them all that Clinton has to offer. It’s truly an open house for our region.” The open house went from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and included more than “Q&As” in the gymnasium. The college’s technology mobile classroom was parked for viewing outside the Stafford Center and tours were given across campus. Food was also available for the students, as well as events, such as an

escape room and a show by Robert Channing. Channing is a mentalist and speed drawer who performed on the nationally popular show, America’s Got Talent. He specializes in mind reading, hypnotism and ESP. “We also have a hypnotist to give them a taste of what college life is like,” DiPasquale explained. Students at the open house were given financial aid and scholarship information. Those who wish to apply for FAFSA can download the StudentAid app or visit fsaid. ed.gov to sign up and see if they are eligible for aid. The CCC code for FAFSA is 006787. Also available is TAP at tapweb.org; Excelsior at hesc.ny.gov; and Aid for Part-Time Study (APTS) at clinton.edu/financial aid for New York State Residents. The CCC code for TAP is 2036. The Clinton Community College website has more information on financial aid and scholarship packages. According to a statement released by CCC, “Clinton offers 24 associate degree programs, seven certificates, transfer pathways and advisement options, multiple non-credit professional credentials, and many flexible learning options including online and evening courses.” One of the majors Clinton has to offer is business, which is what current high school student Elizabeth Parrotte wants to pursue in order to start her own business.

School of Music, which requires an audition. “The goal is to start talking to students very early to understand what are their interests, make sure they’re taking courses that’ll make most sense for them so that we set them up for success,” Potsdam President Kristin Esterberg said. The two schools are nearly two hours apart, both located in the North Country. Potsdam is one of the first colleges in the United States, and is the oldest SUNY school in New York. Roughly 3,600 students are enrolled at Potsdam, graduate and undergraduate. “It helps students stay in the North Country,” Esterberg said. “We love our region and I think when you look at the beautiful countryside between Clinton Community College and SUNY Potsdam, this is an area that really needs to serve young people and provide opportunities to young people, college education that’s affordable and very high quality. We think this serves our region well.” The new program between the schools provides advising and degree planning to help students stay on track for their degree. Both colleges will work together to make sure the students who want to transfer can do so in a timely and efficient fashion. More information on the new program can be found online, or call the Clinton Community College admissions office at 518-562-4170, or the SUNY Potsdam office of admissions at 315-267-2180. ■

On the Salmon River near Pulaski, New York, the Pacific’s have spawned, and their eggs can either develop into young fish, or they become fish food by other fish. Big browns or the steelhead come into feed on those fresh eggs. Once the Pacific’s spawn, they return to nature. Pacific’s die after spawning, its nature’s way. Zombie fish or dead corpse’s float downstream to feed the rivers waters. In our part of the country, the Saranac has Atlantics spawning. They return to the lake after spawning to live another day and to spawn another year. Big browns and an occasional rainbow come into feed on Atlantics eggs also. Nature provides a future for the fish. Reeds are the fish’s nests where the eggs develop. As anglers we need to be respectful and careful, we don’t fish over spawning fish, or step on the reeds and crush the eggs or loosen them up so they float downstream to a feeding fish. Eggs are the future we need to protect. Respect for the fish is something that needs to be encouraged. For the most part, the fly rods are put to bed for the winter. Steel headers though are a different breed. Those large lake run rainbow trout spawn in the rivers in spring. When food like salmon eggs are available, they come into the rivers early and hang out, feeding on eggs. If you fish for steelhead, you can use an egg fly to imitate salmon eggs and try for a bite, or you can swing flies. Salmon and steelhead flies are colorful and deadly when presented in the proper way. Using a single hand flyrod or a double handed switch or spey rod is a unique experience. I made a spey rod a year ago and took it out for the first

time this year. Believe me there is a learning curve to casting a spey rod. The first challenge is getting to the river. Threading a 13-foot rod through a narrow woods and brush river trail is an adventure. Every wild grape vine, and snarly bush just reaches out to grab hold of the rod or line. You learn to weave the rod through the brush quickly. OK, so now you are on the river, you wade out a few feet and want to back cast. WRONG, no back casts! Spey rods require a new set of rules. Pull, don’t push is the first rule, single handed rods are pushers, speys are pullers. Don’t grip it tight, loose is the term you need to remember. Let the rod do the work. Yea right. After thrashing the water for a while, things seem to flow. You turn to your buddy and say “Hey, that was a good cast you missed seeing it”, as you blow the next one they are watching. As soon as you think you have it down, it crumbles. Casts pile up in front of you, you push, not pull, the trees reach out and grab your rod tip or fly line, and they of course, you snag a rock, branch, limb, bush, tree, or yourself. By Dan Alexander As much as we all complain about them, I have to wonder why in the world anyone will want a high profile government job in the future Oh sure, there are a lot of perks, pay’s not bad, bennies are great but so are the headaches, especially when things go bad. Given the antics that are taking place in the halls of state and federal government these days, getting things back on a bipartisan keel, would seem next to hopeless. At times you just have to wonder what their definition of T-R-A-N-S-P-A-R-E-NC-Y really is. To us it means things like “in clear view” and “easily understood”. To our government elected officials and political operatives I fear it means “whatever sounds believable” and “if they can’t see it, it’s because it is too transparent”. In other words, they have become so good at stealth, transparency, and believing every word they say the American public has been left to just pick a side and hope for the best. What we can’t see, know or understand we can’t address, and if it can’t be seen or addressed then everyone in government gets to be left to pursue whatever actions their party demands. It remains difficult for private citizens to question anything undertaken by the government these days? The national media has clearly chosen to take sides and the public is no longer swayed by much of anything they report, leaving those undecided truly in the dark about what is taking place. Last week we had another school shooting at Saugus High School in California resulting in three deaths, one of which was the shooter and another three seriously wounded. In the past, this story would have dominated the news for days with politicians taking sides over the gun rights and mourning community members. Instead, political activity in Washington dominated the news cycle, once the shooting was over. It’s really sad to be so cynical in this era of information and supposed enlightenment. The process of governance and legal interpretation has created an environment of mistrust and misuse of power and authority to the point that we just don’t know who we can trust or whom to believe. Our government shouldn’t function this way, but power and money can change even the best of us, which is why they shouldn’t be given so much money or power. Citizen legislators and even civil servants should have roots in the private sector. Government services should be regulated with limits – the same types of limits government places on private enterprise when they fear it’s getting too big and monopolistic. The government understands regulatory controls. I wonder how they would feel if they were more closely regulated? ■

The benefits and dangers of CBD By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

PLATTSBURGH | CBD has been a hot topic in New York, as it was recently legalized. The product has been popping up in many smoke and vape shops and convenience stores, and in different forms. These can include pills, oils, lotions and other health products and even in food. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical compound found in the marijuana plant that doesn’t have the same psychoactive effects of THC. Rather, it acts as a low dosage painkiller such as Advil; however, the product is not regulated by the FDA and the only approved medical usage is for types of seizure disorders. A new store specifically dedicated to CBD has opened up in Plattsburgh- The CBD Shop. Currently, the store shares its space with a vape shop, but will be moving to a new location. The CBD Shop is run by Damien Tackett, who wants his customers to be as educated on the product as they can. “My main focus is CBD for the potential health benefits,” Tackett said. “Our customers range from people suffering from arthritis and other chronic pain issues to people fighting depression and anxiety, to athletes wanting quicker muscle recovery after work outs to many issues in between.”

New location: 29 Clinton St. is located in downtown Plattsburgh, near the SPCA Thrift Shop. Damien Tackett is the owner and will happily answer any questions someone has on CBD. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris

One thing that makes people skeptical of the recently-legalized product is the fact that

it can be sold anywhere, including online, and in any form. Online CBD is not safe. In

fact, CBD products found on sites such as Amazon and eBay most likely contain hemp oil and not CBD, according to Tackett. This causes fear in people that the product does not work, isn’t exactly what the box says or can contain other products. “Quality CBD products in any of their forms are very safe and very effective,” Tackett said. “A person who needs the health benefits of CBD that tries these lesser quality items will not see the benefits and assume CBD does not work. I also think it is short lived, a person or product will not stay in the market if it is not safe and effective.” The CBD Shop gets about 90 percent of their products from a local Vermont producer, Champlain Valley Organics, according to Tackett. The product at their shop is pure and safe, and Tackett wants to educate customers or those just browsing. “We are developing a very different environment than people have come to expect when they purchase CBD,” Tackett said. “It is a very relaxed space where you can come learn about the product, try samples and get advice about what may work best for you. We want our customers to feel safe, comfortable and at home.” The new CBD Shop is located at 29 Clinton St. in downtown Plattsburgh. Its hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ■

NY-21st race on the radar Stefanik, Cobb in national spotlight following first days of impeachment hearings By Nathan Ovalle EDITOR

NORTH COUNTRY | The race for the 21st Congressional District seat gained national attention over the weekend. U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik was front and center in the opening days of the impeachment hearings that began last week. Stefanik’s prominent role earned praise from President Donald Trump, support from the party’s highest-ranking members and donations for her re-election effort. It also brought the attention of the country to the NY-21 election less than a year away. Stefanik is being challenged by Tedra Cobb, whose name was also thrust into the spotlight in the process. Stefanik defeated Cobb in 2018 with 56 percent of the vote. Over a span of just a few days, Cobb’s campaign says they received more than $1 million in donations from supporters.

From SALMON » pg. 6

Snagging yourself is not something I recommend. I haven’t done it yet with the spey rod, but I have heard the fly go whizzing by my head at Mach speed. Driving a salmon hook into your ear or neck would hurt, probably leave both a mark and a lifelong mental impression. My casting is questionable to say the least, but hey, I’m out there doing it, and that is worth something. Anyway, it was my first year with a spey rod, and yes, I did catch two Atlantic Landlocked Salmon on our beautiful Saranac River. The river’s beauty ends however when you go upstream. You then realize that those historic salmon that once were so prolific that they were harvested with pitchforks, can no longer spawn in their historic waters due to dams. The Imperial Dam has not been used in years and is classified as Class C high hazard dam by New York State Department

TWITTER BATTLE

Much of the attention to the race has come through Twitter. One of the donors to Cobb’s campaign was George Conway, husband of Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway. He tweeted the following message Saturday: “.@EliseStefanik is lying trash. Please give to her opponent, @TedraCobb.” Stefanik responded with: “The one thing I’ve NEVER been called in my life is TRASH. You need serious help.” The president offered this take on Sunday: “A new Republican Star is born. Great going @EliseStefanik!”

ATTENTION

“I am overwhelmed by the support we have received,” Cobb said in press release. “Stefanik’s partisan political theater is beneath the dignity of her office. She skipped several important private hearings— but with the cameras on, she repeatedly attempted to derail yesterday’s public hearings. Stefanik should take her oath to the constitution seriously and find all the facts in this grave matter of national security. The people of this district deserve better.” “Much of the new attention to NY-21 came Saturday after George Conway ... tweeted a screenshot of his $2,800 donation to Cobb,” a press release from Stefanik’s campaign said. “He also circulated and later deleted a fake photo of Stefanik at the hearing, which had been Photoshopped to feature a

of Environmental Conservation. So why keep it? There is no reasonable answer I have heard so far. The Lake Champlain Chapter of Trout Unlimited unanimously voted to remove the dam, we do not support a fish ladder. We want the dam removed and the Saranac River restored to geo-morphic conditions that support aquatic communities, reduce ice buildup and allow the salmon to migrate to additional spawning waters. What has been done on the Boquet River by removing the old wooden dam is proof. Atlantic Landlocked salmon now spawn in waters for the first time in over 100 years. That is Environmental Conservation at its best, and we want the same for the Saranac River. Remove the Dam and Restore the River! ■

hand sticking up the middle finger. “So far this cycle, Stefanik has easily out-f undraised Cobb, though Cobb has claimed more in-district donors,” Stefanik’s campaign relayed. “Stefanik ended the third quarter in September with almost $1.3 million in her campaign fund, compared to $500,000 for her Democratic opponent.” Dave Wasserman, U.S. House editor of the nonpartisan Cook Report, doesn’t think the new attention will be a problem for Stefanik’s re-election efforts. “The political reality - as much as Dems wish this weren’t the case - is that #NY21 Rep. Elise Stefanik (R) is wellaligned with her North Country district, which twice voted for Obama before voting for Trump by *14%* in 2016. She’s not vulnerable in 2020.” ■

Much like the Plattsburgh Vape Co., other smoke shops are aware of the law change. However, another law change may be coming soon - the banning of f lavored vapes. After a nation-wide vape scare following the deaths of multiple people, the Trump Administration announced that all “fun” flavors of vape juice would be banned; such as cotton candy or fruity flavors. However, due to backlash and further information released, this ban is being reconsidered. It was revealed that the majority of deaths and lung problems due to vaping was actually a result of illegal, streetsold cartridges that contain vitamin E. The vitamin E, which is being used to

Possible dog park coming to Rouses Point Businesses accepting donations for project By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER

ROUSES POINT | The Village of Rouses Point is considering building a dog park on public land for its residents’ furry friends. A petition created by Rouses Point resident Lori Langlois was handed to the village board with approximately 160 signatures in support of the project during the meeting on Aug. 19. To help raise the money, some local businesses have on display donation jugs to go towards the dog park. “In canvassing the village, people were extremely excited to have a place to bring their pets to socialize along with socializing amongst each other. People were pleased the village was willing to provide this for our

canine companions.” Rouses Point is home to several public parks and campsites, but it does not have an “unleashed” dog park. Langlois used the fenced-in Plattsburgh Melissa L. Penfield Dog Park on Beach Road as an example of what Rouses Point could build. The ideal location in Rouses Point is an unmarked plot of land behind a business along Lake Street on the North End of the village, according to Langlois, who spoke to the village board and administration. Rouses Point village board meetings are held bi-monthly on the first and third Mondays each month. The meetings take place in the Rouses Point Civic center at 39 Lake Street and begin at 7:00 p.m. To learn more about the dog park discussed at meetings, the agendas and minutes can be found at the village website at rousespointny.com. Those who wish to donate to the dog park idea but do not live in Rouses Point or have the time to visit supporting businesses,

donations can be mailed in to Langlois herself. All money and resources go towards the dog park. Checks can be made payable to the Rouses Point Dog Park in the care of Lori Langlois. Her mailing address is 71 Champlain Street, Rouses Point, NY 12979. To get in touch with Langlois, her phone number is 518-297-6557. As a reminder for dog owners in Rouses Point, “New York State Law requires all dogs over the age of 4 months must be vaccinated against rabies and licensed within the municipality in which the dog is sheltered,” according to the Rouses Point dog control page. “Dog licenses for the Village of Rouses Point residents are issued by Julie Castine, Town Clerk. Her office is located at the Town of Champlain, 729 Route 9, Champlain, NY. Proof of rabies vaccination and whether the dog is spayed/ neutered or condition of the dog are required. For more information on dog licenses please contact Julie Castine at 518-298-8160 or online at townofchamplain.com.” ■

‘I FOUND A NICHE’ Loremans’ celebrates 40 years By Andrea VanValkenburg STAFF WRITER

After four decades in business, Thom Loreman credits his family’s focus on customer service and evolving technology with helping them continue to expand their two locations locally.

economies and rising competition. “It was purely ink and development back then,” he said, as he described the many arduous and evolving processes he’s incorporated over the years. “The technology has changed so much.” His son Thom, who joined the business in those first early days, along with other son Donald “Spike” Jr., said “All the evolutionary changes have been by technology and customer need.” “And now, you think it up, we’ll design it,” Don said as he described the in-depth processes they can detail images onto everything from clothing, shoes and golf balls to caskets, trophies and metal art. Products and services today, Thom said, focus on everything from screen printing and laser etching to embroidery and digital transfers, often combining several methods to make the highest quality products to exceed their customers’ expectations. “Merging all of these techniques can let us do so many more things,” he explained. Thom said the business now handles everything from thousand-piece international orders to single-order sentimental pieces and personal local deliveries.

They’ve even had history making orders too, Thom said, describing how the local company once made woolen blankets for Air Force One during the Reagan Administration and details pieces used on Star Trek uniforms during the show’s hit years. Today, with their original Keeseville location and another on Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh, the Loremans’ have 17 employees and are continuing to expand their business and services. “We do so much more than people realize,” Thom said as he toured the different work stations and departments at the main location. “We’re here and reachable for the small and big things.” Helping fellow company’s develop strong branding methods to survive is another key focus of the business, he said. “Our job is to give them an image to identify as a player and be awesome. We transcend the brand and we’re really state-of-the-art with our art department.” In addition to trying to dominate the market, the Loremans’ have focused much of their energy on volunteerism and community activism, spending much of their time coordinating and donating to local fundraisers

and events, like the annual field days and summer music festivals in their hometown. “We even have a mobile venue, where we go to events and can sell and decorate personalized merchandise right there in just minutes,” Thom said. “To donate time is not extra, it’s sacrifice, but I believe in where I live and the people we have here.” Though they’ve branched into the global arena and are continuing to expand their operation physically and technologically, Thom said the local market and community will always be their focus. “We have to focus on our local people,” Thom maintained. “They’re the most important.” It’s that unwavering focus on their customers, employees and community that’s helped them stay afloat and continue to grow, he said. “That foundation and ethic our dad set for us is long withstanding. We want the life of our businesses’ orders and we’re so proud of our people here.” ■

KEESEVILLE | When Don Loreman first opened his business from the trunk of his car, he never imagined it would become the global enterprise it is today. From his car and the basement of their family home into the burned out shell of an old farmhouse and stable outpost on Route 9, he eventually pieced Loremans’ Embroidery, Engraving and Screenprinting together from a small merchandise operation into the ever expanding technologically driven company it is today. “I found a niche,” he recalled from that same location, now 40 years later. As a supply sergeant in the Army, Loreman said he’d quickly learned the difference between quality items and materials and decided to venture into the market when he left the military. Selling small wearables and trinkets, he was one day asked to order shirts for a local softball tournament. That’s where, he said, he found his calling. “I waited and waited for the jerseys to come in and they finally came the day of the tournament,” he said, recalling how unbearable it was to wait and that the uniforms’ stitching started to unravel from the seams before the game was done. “And I said ‘There’s got to be a better way to do this.’ That’s how I got into screenprinting.” From that early experience, Loreman built the foundation of his business- high quality customer service and top-of-the-line products-a mission he credits for helping him thrive four decades through struggling

Woodruff scores top 10 finish at state meet MCKIERNAN TOP D RUNNER

By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PLAT TSBURGH | For the second year, Saranac harrier Rachael Woodruff finished among the best runners in Class C at the NYSPHSAA cross country championships, held Nov. 16 at Plattsburgh State. A year after placing fourth in the state meet, Woodruff ran the Field House course in 17:22.8, placing seventh overall, having been projected eighth in one of the most competitive fields in the girls races (Classes A-D). “I’m really happy with my result,” said Woodruff. “Class C was really competitive this year and I really just wanted to put myself in a good position, I held onto the top group through the fi rst two miles so I was very happy with how I was able to hang on and push through the race. I felt it was a very good race and I have no regrets.” For Woodruff, the race gave her two top 10 finishes out of her five trips to the state championships, including the chance to finish her high school cross country career on a home course. “It has been so special to come to states each year and then to have it at Plattsburgh in my senior year was very special,” she said. “I have enjoyed every trip and I never take it for granted and make sure I compete to my best.”

Saranac’s Rachael Woodruff took the lead in the early stages of the NYSPHSAA Class C championship race Nov. 16 before finishing in seventh place, her second top-10 finish in as many years. Photo by Keith Lobdell

Woodruff and the Chiefs placed 10th in the team standings, as Gillian Miner placed 92nd, Danielle Borner 96th, Mackenzie Converse 99th, Angelena Fay 100th, Molly Denis 102nd and Kaelyn Fay 105th. AuSable Valley senior Lily Potthast was just

outside the top 20 in the Class C race, placing 21st in the class. Sara Crippen of Peru placed 79th, while Katie Samperi (Saranac Lake) was 85th, Nora Graves (Plattsburgh High) 86th and Gwen Mader (Saranac Lake) 108th.

Section VII/Class D individual champion Sophia McKiernan of Moriah/Boquet Valley placed 37th overall in the state race with a time of 19:29.6, the top sectional finisher in the class. “Sophia ran an exception race,” said M/ BV coach Howard Hammonds. “This is her fi rst season of cross country and she has adapted well to it. When in a race against one of the top five in the country it can be intimidating, but she performed just like she was born for it and she is.” Lea DeJordy of Seton Catholic placed 50th overall, with sister Savannah placing 53rd and teammate Faline Yang 67th. Kathryn Morgan of Ticonderoga placed 89th. Sectional champion Lake Placid placed eighth among Class D teams, as Harley Cohen placed 52nd, Alexa Harper 83rd, Anya Morgan 84th, Kelly Le 85th, Anissa Schmeil 101st and Erin Roth 107th.

BEEKMANTOWN COMPETES IN CLASS B

The Eagles placed 12th in the Class B race, as Mikayla Hamel was the top finisher in 106th. Kayler Grizzle placed 112th, while Alice Saliba was 118th, Raelin Ko 120th and Phoebe Eldredge 122nd. ■

PLATTSBURGH | While Saranac Lake was winning their second state championship in as many years, several other local athletes

had strong days at the NYSPHSAA boy’s state cross country championships Nov. 16 at the Plattsburgh State Field House. In the Class D race, Seton Catholic’s Jake Glicksman finished ninth overall, while the Moriah/Boquet Valley team placed fifth overall with 131 points, behind Class D champion Beaver River. “I was very pleased with our performance,” said M/BV coach Howard Hammonds. “We were on the big stage for the first time with a very young team, only one senior being Logan. Most of the guys ran a little better than at qualifiers, which is good because it’s not uncommon to let down after reaching a major goal especially with young athletes. The boys are starting to really talk up indoors and the prospects for the future with everyone but Logan coming back. My hope is this inspires other students to consider running.” Glicksman’s time of 15:35.1 was just over a minute off the pace of winner Kal Lewis of Shelter Island, while the Goats’ Logan VanBuren had a top 20 finish, placing 16th in 15:50.2. “Congrats to our Brothers at Saranac Lake on their win,” said Hammonds. “Because of their win Logan gets an invite to the Fed championships next week. Another competition against best of the best in the state.” Mike Skutt of Lake Placid crossed the line in 22nd, while Luke Moore (Seton) was 32nd, Sam DeJordy (Seton) 37th. Emery Tausinger (M/BV) 44th, Denali Garnica (M/BV) 45th, Max Flaningan (Lake Placid) 53rd, Cole Simer (M/BV) 56th, Gage Perry (M/BV) 71st, T.J. Bilow (M/BV) 74th and Landon Peters (M/BV) 87th out of 114 runners in the Class D race.

CAMPBELL TOP C AT-LARGE RUNNER

Ian Campbell of Plattsburgh High was the top finisher for Class C from the at-large field, finishing in 45th in a time of 16:11.6. Northeastern Clinton’s Thomas Gilbo placed 61st overall, while Andrew Woodruff (Saranac) was 66th, Sam Carter (Saranac) 70th and Spencer Daby (AuSable Valley) 75th among 132 Class C runners.

Plattsburgh High’s Ian Campbell was the top Section VII/ Class C at large finisher, placing 45th at the NYSPHSAA Class C championship race. Photo by Keith Lobdell In Class B, Beekmantown placed 11th in the overall team scores, led by Connor Goodwin’s 100th place finish in 17:15.4. Alexander Barber placed 113th for the Eagles, followed by Riley Loughan in 115th, Bode Curilla in 116th, Nathan Sand in 118th, Devan Bibeau in 119th and Elijah Magiera in 122nd with 132 runners in the Class B race. ■

Sun Community News staff members Keith Lobdell, DJ Alexander and Nathan Ovalle, along with photographer Jill Lobdell, were proud to partner with the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) to help bring photos and live updates from the cross country championships to the entire state Nov. 16. Indians season ends at hands of Broadalbin-Perth By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

BEEKMANTOWN | The Peru Indians were unable to become the first Section VII team to make the NYSPHSAA volleyball finals, falling to Broadalbin-Perth in sets of 13-25, 18-25 and 21-25 Nov. 16 at Beekmantown High School. “We kept getting stronger and stronger and stronger,” said Peru coach Mary Anne Lake. “The more we saw of them, the more we were able to work around them. They

came out hard, but my girl’s keep adjusting to them. They kept getting better with each set, and that is what impressed me the most about my girl’s. We had them scared at some points.” Marie Higgins was able to fire off 13 kills in her season finale, while Lauyn Clary had 24 assists and Molly Timmons 22 digs. Julia Prescott led the team with a pair of aces, while Higgins and Mallory Martin each had one block. The Indians finished the season with a 15-3 record. ■

BEEKMANTOWN | The Galway Golden Eagles came out to make a statement in the Class D regional finals Nov. 16, scoring wins of 25-6 and 25-11 in the opening two games against Northern Adirondack. Winning the third 25-20, Galway punched their ticket to the NYSPHSAA state championship round in Glens Falls starting Nov. 23. “We were flat footed several times and they read that and got the ball into areas we could not get to,” said Bobcats head coach Elizabeth Brown. “My girls are a hard working group of women that do not want anything to be taken

away from them. It will be tough without the four seniors (Cora Barnaby, Jadyn LaValley, Emily Fleury, Anna Brown) next year because they are what drove this team, but I could not ask them to give anything more then they gave today.” Elyse Hogan led the Bobcats with five kills and six digs, while Cora Barnaby also added six digs. Allie Barber had eight assists, while Chelsea Tanzer had three aces. Anna Brown had four assists and four digs. Brown said there will be some new faces to help rebuild next season. “The four freshman I moved up proved themselves during the playoff s and we will work next season to get back to where we can win the sectional championship and get back to regionals.” ■

Eagles’ run for 10 ends in semifinal round By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

MIDDLETOWN | The run for a historic 10th state title fell short for the Chazy varsity boys soccer team Nov. 16, as a familiar foe was finally able to solve the mystery of the Eagles. Mount Academy scored in each half and withheld a strong late game barrage from the defending champions for a 2-1 win in the Class D state semifinals. “Mount was a good, strong team — we knew it was going to be a battle and that is just what it was,” said Eagles head coach Rob McAuliffe. “We made some mistakes on both goals, but give credit to Mount Academy, they punished those mistakes. Other than that, I felt we defended well for the vast majority of the game and gave us a chance.” Mount scored in the 25th minute of the first half and then got an early second half goal in the 45th minute for their 2-0 lead. “For the first 55 minutes, they had control,” McAuliffe said. “For the last 25 minutes, we certainly gave it everything we had.” Chazy was able to find their chance in the 63rd minute, as Joey DeOndarza was able to score on a direct kick off the foot of Heath Lucas to cut the lead to 2-1 for Mount.

Joey DeOndarza, pictured in the regional finals, scored the lone goal for Chazy in their 2-1 state semifinal loss to Mount Academy Nov. 16. Photo by Keith Lobdell

Happy, healthy, loved. These are the dreams we have for our families and friends.

“We have been dangerous all year on our restarts and that held true Saturday,” said McAuliffe. “We had three other chances in the final two minutes. If things went a little different, we could have been going into overtime. We threw everything we had at them.” Gabe Huchro finished with four saves in the game, his final as team co-captain, a title he held with Lucas. “All of our seniors have had a great career, having won at least one state title and in some cases two, playing in very big games and we are very proud of them all,” said McAuliffe. “Gabe and Heath have been great leaders on our team, and they will be hard to replace as on field players and as leader.” Mount Academy evened their record with Chazy over the past three years, as the teams shared the state title in 2017 while Chazy scored a 3-0 win last season. However, Mount would not be taking home a state title, as Marathon — the team Chazy defeated in last year’s semifinal round — scored a 1-0 win for the state title over Mount. The semifinal loss was the seventh time Chazy has not advanced to the final game of the season in their 20 trips to the state championships, having advanced to the final game 13 times and winning nine. ■
