State raises CCC AND POTSDAM tobacco SIGN MEMORANDUM buying age Vaping juices still on shelves By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER
PLATTSBURGH | The State of New York officially raised the age of tobacco purchasing from 18 to 21 on Nov. 13. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill in July, 120 days before the new law took effect. New York is the 18th state to raise the smoking age to 21.

“By raising the smoking age from 18 to 21, we can stop cigarettes and e-cigarettes from getting into the hands of young people in the first place and prevent an entire generation of New Yorkers from forming costly and potentially deadly addictions,” Cuomo said in a statement back in July. As a result of this law change, New York tobacco shops are preparing by reminding their customers of the age change. New technology is helping these stores better scan IDs, rather than just looking at the age. This ensures that the I.D. is legitimate. “Starting [November 13], no vape shop owner will sell to anyone under the age of 21, those are the laws,” owner of Plattsburgh Vape Co. Earl Dahl said. “I have a tablet that scans every single ID that tells me if it’s fake, tells me if it’s real, if it’s expired - it’s full proof registration that goes through state sourcing.”
PLATTSBURGH | Clinton Community College (CCC) held an official signing of the new memorandum between CCC and SUNY Potsdam on Nov. 14. The two colleges signing off on this memorandum guarantees admission of transfer in Potsdam for all students of CCC who earned their associates degree and have a GPA of at least 2.0, including their credits. The official signing took place on the first floor of the CCC Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and President of Clinton Community College Ray DiPasquale, SUNY Potsdam President Kristin Esterberg, SUNY Potsdam vice president for Academics Bette Bergeron and Clinton Community College Vice President for Academics John Kowal were there to speak at the signing. “Students who want to go to Clinton have a seamless pathway to go to an outstanding four ear school - Potsdam,” CCC President Ray DiPasquale said. “It gives our students one more opportunity to have a chance to move on and achieve the dreams that they’ve always had and with no barriers in the way. Do your homework, do your schoolwork, graduate from Cinton, and you’ve got an automatic acceptance.” Some majors, like education, require a higher GPA or special courses. SUNY Potsdam also includes the Crane

CCC open house welcomes students High schoolers prepare for college By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STAFF WRITER
Finding the right major: Tables at the open house included different programs that could interest incoming college students. High schoolers were invited to ask as many questions as they could to find what they are looking for major-wise. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris
Introducing magic: Known for his time on America’s Got Talent, Robert Channing was invited to preform at the open house. He used his powers of ESP and mind reading to hypnotize volunteers. PLATTSBURGH | Clinton Community College hosted an open house for high school students to tour the school and learn all it has to offer. Held at the William H. Forrence Center, Gymnasium tables with different majors, information and clubs were set up for the students to explore and ask any questions they may have. “The open house gives [students] an opportunity to talk to faculty directly, meet different programs, begin to see what interests they have,” President of Clinton Community College Ray DiPasquale said. “Everyone from our council center to athletics - it gives them a taste of the college. The idea is to bring high school students on campus to give them the opportunity to experience college a little bit and show them all that Clinton has to offer. It’s truly an open house for our region.” The open house went from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and included more than “Q&As” in the gymnasium. The college’s technology mobile classroom was parked for viewing outside the Stafford Center and tours were given across campus. Food was also available for the students, as well as events, such as an
escape room and a show by Robert Channing. Channing is a mentalist and speed drawer who performed on the nationally popular show, America’s Got Talent. He specializes in mind reading, hypnotism and ESP. “We also have a hypnotist to give them a taste of what college life is like,” DiPasquale explained. Students at the open house were given financial aid and scholarship information. Those who wish to apply for FAFSA can download the StudentAid app or visit fsaid. ed.gov to sign up and see if they are eligible for aid. The CCC code for FAFSA is 006787. Also available is TAP at tapweb.org; Excelsior at hesc.ny.gov; and Aid for Part-Time Study (APTS) at clinton.edu/financial aid for New York State Residents. The CCC code for TAP is 2036. The Clinton Community College website has more information on financial aid and scholarship packages. According to a statement released by CCC, “Clinton offers 24 associate degree programs, seven certificates, transfer pathways and advisement options, multiple non-credit professional credentials, and many flexible learning options including online and evening courses.” One of the majors Clinton has to offer is business, which is what current high school student Elizabeth Parrotte wants to pursue in order to start her own business.

School of Music, which requires an audition. “The goal is to start talking to students very early to understand what are their interests, make sure they’re taking courses that’ll make most sense for them so that we set them up for success,” Potsdam President Kristin Esterberg said. The two schools are nearly two hours apart, both located in the North Country. Potsdam is one of the first colleges in the United States, and is the oldest SUNY school in New York. Roughly 3,600 students are enrolled at Potsdam, graduate and undergraduate. “It helps students stay in the North Country,” Esterberg said. “We love our region and I think when you look at the beautiful countryside between Clinton Community College and SUNY Potsdam, this is an area that really needs to serve young people and provide opportunities to young people, college education that’s affordable and very high quality. We think this serves our region well.” The new program between the schools provides advising and degree planning to help students stay on track for their degree. Both colleges will work together to make sure the students who want to transfer can do so in a timely and efficient fashion. More information on the new program can be found online, or call the Clinton Community College admissions office at 518-562-4170, or the SUNY Potsdam office of admissions at 315-267-2180. ■
