Walk honoring Randy Duprey receives huge community response Supporters raise more than $10,000 for the Scleroderma Foundation BEEKMANTOWN — When Kate Duprey was planning an event in memory of her late husband, she had no idea how many people would show up. However, when the day came for the First Annual Scleroderma Walk in Memory of Randy Duprey, she was pleasantly surprised. More than 300 people participated in the walk from Beekmantown Town Hall to Beekmantown High School last Sunday, June 14. That amount of people was staggering to Duprey, who was visibly moved by the crowd. “I don’t have any words,” Duprey said as her eyes panned the sea of people. “When I looked down and saw the parking lot was full, I just thought it was unbelievable. We’re thrilled about the turnout, especially because we have two local women here who are battling scleroderma.” The women, Wendy Faubert of West Chazy and Julie Mooso of Champlain, both understand the struggle Duprey’s husband went through, and recounted how every day is another day of living with a challenging and very tiring autoimmune disease. When diagnosed with the disease last November, Mooso said she was taken by total surprise. “I didn’t have a clue what it was,” she said. Neither did Faubert when she was diagnosed with scleroderma three years ago. “I went on-line and did what the doctors

When speaking with others, many were unaware the disease existed, let alone how serious it is. “Everyone needs to learn more about it,” Mooso said. “So many people know nothing about this disease. There are people who have been diagnosed with it but they’re afraid to talk about it because they’re afraid to think about the future and what’s going to happen.” Events like last Sunday’s walk are critical in not only raising money for scleroderma research and treatment, but in raising awareness as well, said Mooso. “I think this is great,” Mooso said of the event. “Making more people aware is very important.” “Something good’s going to come from this,” Faubert said of the walk. And, something good already has come. Duprey stated at last count, the event raised $10,500 from pledges and donations. Another $1,000 is expected to come in from the corporate offices of Best Buy, which pledged a $1,000 donation if 10 of its employees participated in the walk. Alex J. Matich, development director for the Tri-state chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation, said he was impressed with the amount being raised and by the number of people who turned out for the event in sup-

ast week, I attended the Verizon-sponsored Faculty Institute in Framingham, Mass. The institute is a well-attended three-day academic conference held yearly in June. It allows faculty and administrators of Verizon’s Telecommunications degree program, called NextStep, to meet and discuss curriculum and related issues. Clinton Community College has been a Verizon NextStep facility since 2005. The institute is also a chance to build or establish relationships with colleagues from other community colleges. We have ample time to meet with our peers to share classroom and lab practices. The lab part is particularly important being it’s the part of class students like best because it’s hands-on, which is perhaps the most important part of any curriculum devoted to learning new skills. One change to the telecommunications curriculum made during the institute was to bump up the time spent on both video and voice over IP (VoIP). The change is good because of the rapid movement by telecommunications companies toward Internet delivery of services that include IPTV and VoIP. The curriculum change was reflected in the number of workshops on those subjects. One such workshop, Video Over IP, was presented by a Verizon engineer. The dialogue centered on the various protocols that deliver video over the

Internet and how issues like data packet loss and signal delays are dealt with. During the summary he stated “IP Video technology knowledge, including that of the underlying protocols whether using unicast or multicast or both, is becoming increasingly important to service providers and industry.” The statement struck me as a very accurate educationalBy Ron Poland ly-themed modern day version of “Go west, young man.” Those who are well-versed in the technology are in very high demand now and that will probably not change for quite a long time.

Helping loved ones deal with vision loss

A

ccording to Ryan Mackey from Today’s Caregiver, nearly 30 percent of seniors face partial vision loss due to macular degeneration. Macular degeneration causes a gradual decline in the retina, which affects the ability to read and clearly view facial features. The center of the retina, the macula, deteriorates to the point where only the edge of the retina allows vision. The following are tips caregivers can use to alleviate the problem: • Make sure hospital personnel are aware your loved one has a vision deficiency. If they are not informed of the condition, they may assume food, people, and fixtures are easily distinguished. • Make sure the condition is properly noted in medical charts and is not simply categorized as glaucoma. • Be understanding of any difficulties that may occur as a result of vision problems. Make sure medical-care professionals know ahead of time your loved one may have difficulty writing their signature or reading small print. • Make sure visitors identify themselves when they enter your senior ’s room, rather than assuming they have been recognized. • Take care to ensure lighting in your loved one’s residence is sufficient for them to see as best as possible. Generally, the stronger the light the better.

• Have personnel at the hospital or care facility arrange meal placement so it is easily accessed by your senior. Have them place it within easy reach and without anything obstructing it. There are many items available now for persons with limited vision. These include large-number playing cards, books-on-tape, largebutton phones, and pill boxes embossed with Braille. A simple search on the Internet can give caregivers a variety of ideas to make their loved one’s lives more comfortable.

Relaxing on weeding Become a super-couponer: ‘stack’ for best deals

D

id you know that most stores accept two coupons for the same item? Many stores’ coupon policies allow stacking, the term couponers use for pairing a manufacturer coupon (found in newspaper inserts and on the Internet) with a store coupon that the store offers in a local flyer or on its Web site. Pairing the manufacturer coupon and the retailer coupon results in significant savings for you. Often, a shopper who stacks coupons in this way can get items things for free. I know what you’re must be thinking: Free? Yes, free. Completely free. Let me give you a few examples of sales that I’ve recently enjoyed. Shampoo is on sale for $3. The store’s flyer has a $2 store coupon for the shampoo. I have a $1 manufacturer coupon for the same brand of shampoo. Using both coupons together results in $3 savings, and I go home with a free bottle of shampoo. Frozen vegetables are on sale for $1 a bag. The store’s Web site has a store coupon for 50 cents off, and I have a 50-cent manufacturer coupon for the same brand of vegetables. Using these together saves me $1 – my vegetables are free. Even when items aren’t free, they’re often significantly cheaper with stacking. A half-gallon of organic milk is on sale for $3. The store’s Web site has a store coupon for $1.75 off this brand of milk. This milk also has a Web site with a printable manufacturer coupon for 50 cents off a half-gallon. Now, my carton of organic milk is just 75 cents. Learning that stores allow customers to stack coupons is a revelation to new coupon users, and stacking is a big factor in bringing your total grocery bill down to a manageable level. When I go to the grocery store, almost every item I buy is significantly less than the price most other people pay. I buy items with coupons when the items are at their lowest point in the sales cycle, and I stack store and manufacturer coupons together to achieve the lowest prices possible. Inevitably, people ask me if the store loses money when people use coupons to get items for free or at extremely low prices. The answer is no. The product manufacturers that offer the coupons reimburse the store for the full value of the

W

eeding is a chore many gardeners detest. But there is some good news. If you can just keep ahead of the weeds until about mid July, long enough for your young plants to get well established, you can relax a bit for the rest of the season. I’ve seen successful gardeners walk out into what looks to me like a weed patch in mid August, part the By Amy Ivy plants and pull out beautiful tomatoes, peppers and squash. Now I don’t recommend letting your garden get this out of hand, mostly because the crowded foliage reduces air circulation, creating ideal conditions for some diseases. But if your time is limited, it’s much better to let weeds develop in the last half of the season rather than the first half. For now, the sooner you tackle the emerging weed seedlings the better. It’s tempting to wait until they develop some size before pulling, and they’re easier to grasp, but by then they’ve already done a good bit of damage. And, as you pull them out you disturb the new roots of the plants you leave behind, stressing those desirables unnecessarily. Young weeds are incredibly efficient at competing with your plants for food, water and space. You want your good plants to get off to the best start possible so they’ll develop a strong, healthy root system that will tide them over through late summer stresses. Try hard to be diligent now and you can give yourself a little time off in August.

coupon, plus an 8- to 12-cent handling fee. So, the store actually makes more money when people use coupons. If I use 30 coupons in one shopping trip, the store will make an additional $2.40 just in handling fees alone – plus they will be reimbursed the full face value of each coupon. Coupons pay for a big part of my grocery bill, and my store earns more because I use coupons regularBy Jill Cataldo ly. It’s best to think of your coupons as cash. When my Sunday newspaper arrives, I immediately bring it in, pull the coupon inserts out, stick them in a folder… and that’s it. I don’t waste time cutting them out or sorting them by product or type or even looking at them until I’m actually ready to go shopping for the week. You don’t have to be a highly organized person to use coupons, but when you start viewing them as cash, you treat them with the same care and organization that you would paper money. The average Sunday newspaper has at least $40 worth of coupons inside. Would you leave $40 cash lying around the house to get lost among other papers and magazines? So what happens when you have a $1 coupon for an item that’s on sale for 75 cents? Couponers call this overage, and overage is when the real fun begins! Next week, I’ll explain it to you. © CTW Features

As an administrator, Zaferakis was instrumental in the creation of the school district’s advanced placement programs, gifted and talented students programs, and Peru Middle School. “I remember when I retired they were creating the middle school with the additions we had planned,” said Zaferakis. “It’s nice to see how your thoughts and your ideas have been put into practice.” Zaferakis’ involvement with the school’s student council and the shared-decision making process benefited students and colleagues alike within the school district, Mazzella added. Throughout the years, Zaferakis, who was also an instructor at the North Country Teacher Resource Center in Plattsburgh, has served in various capacities for organizations including the United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties Inc., The Development Corporation, and the North Country Tennis Association. Though now retired, Zaferakis continues to be an active member of the Plattsburgh area community and is presently an avid golfer and member of the Adirondack Golf and Country Club as well a volunteer at CVPH Medical Center and St. Peter ’s Church. She also is proud to be a five-year survivor of lung cancer who enjoys making the most out of every day. “I’ve been playing golf, going to the doctor ’s, volunteering and just staying out of trouble,” said Zaferakis, laughing. “If you knew me, you’d know I have to work to stay out of trouble.” What does Zaferakis miss most about being a part of the education system? “When you see a night like this that highlight the academic success of students,” said Zaferakis. “I kind of miss that. But, retirement’s pretty nice.”

New look, same informative publication T

here’s no doubt when you picked up your copy of this week’s Clinton County Free Trader Today that you took a second glance at the front page. In addition to continuing to bring you stories about local people and events that are of interest to you, our readers, we at Denton Publications felt it was necessary to put our heads together to bring a more attractive look to the face of this newspaper. When choosing the image at the center of our masthead, we thought long and hard. Would we have a mountainous scene to reflect the Adirondack Mountains which traverse much of the towns of Saranac and Dannemora and a portion of the town of Peru? Would we highlight Peru’s prosperous apple orchards with a grove of apple trees? Or would we pick from countless other images that reflect other individual towns and villages within our readership area? In the end, we decided on the look of a historic battleship. Why a battleship, you may ask? The answer is simple — history. In the newspaper business, it’s our duty to bring you the news of the day — news that will one day become our history. When deciding on an image that would encompass all of Clinton County rather than one particular portion versus another, we decided to choose a ship. The ship symbolizes

the early settling of Clinton County and battles fought for this land we now so affectionately refer to as “the North Country.” That history is what makes us what we are today and our mission — our duty to you, our readers — is to bring you information that informs you now and will inform generations to come of how life in Clinton County once was. We hope you enjoy our new look as we continue to bring you the news you’re looking for, for many years to come. And, as always, we welcome your feedback to know how we can better serve you, our readers! Jeremiah Papineau is the editor of the Clinton County Free Trader Today and the North Countryman. He welcomes your suggestions for stories and columns and enjoys hearing from readers. He may be reached via e-mail at jeremiah@denpubs.com or by phone at 561-9680, ext. 102.

Nova Bus From page 1 like the ones the corporation has already forged with several key agencies. During the groundbreaking for the Banker Road facility in April 2008, Dion credited representatives from the state, the town of Plattsburgh, The Development Corporation, Crossborder Development Corporation, and the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce for forming a “successful team effort” in the creation of the Nova Bus development. Chamber of commerce president Garry F. Douglas thanked Dion for the recognition on behalf of the chamber ’s more than 3,000 members. Douglas likened the success of the Nova Bus facility opening to the popular children’s song, “The Wheels on the Bus,” in which the lyrics state “the wheels on the bus go round and round, all through the town.” “Thanks to the remarkable workforce, management team and all the community support that surrounds what’s being launched here today, wheels on buses made at this plant are going to be going round and round all through towns, all across the United States,” said Douglas. “That’s exciting.” The communities whose economic futures are centered on the automotive industry are in uncertain times, Douglas continued. However, companies such as Nova Bus and trainmanufacturer Bombardier Transportation, which focus on mass transit, are companies he feels will withstand the current economic crunch. “We’re going to be making buses and we’re going to be making trains here in Plattsburgh for decades to come,” said Douglas. Those words were echoed in the sentiments by Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernard C. Bassett, who, like Dion, credited the various municipal and private agencies working together for to see the Nova Bus project come to fruition “We’re very pleased to have Nova Bus in this community,” said Bassett. “During these tough economic times, to bring close to 200 jobs to start into this community is just outstanding.” “It was absolute collaboration all the way,” added Bassett. “And, the relationship is just beginning.” The new Nova Bus plant on Banker Road is a 135,740square-foot facility, which employs approximately 200 people, according to information provided by the corporation. Production has already begun, with the facility currently assembling buses to be used in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in British Columbia, Canada. The contract is being split between the Plattsburgh facility and Nova Bus’ two other manufacturing’ facilities in Montreal and Saint-Eustache. The Plattsburgh facility has also secured a contract with the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York City to construct 90 Nova LFS articulated buses, which will begin pro-

duction later this year, said Dion. The contract is expected to be completed between January and June next year. “New York is a very visible business partner, and very, well-known in the transit authorities network so that’s a very important project for us,” said Dion. As for who the next large municipal Nova Bus contract will land, Dion said only time will tell. “Every city that needs transportation solutions, that needs a very professional transportation solution provider, we’re there,” said Dion. “I don’t know which one will be the next one, but we shall know quite soon.”

“You wouldn’t think that would be a little-known fact, but it is,” said Delaney. “Recreation” focuses on the many recreational opportunities the town has to offer, from boating on the Saranac River to climbing Lyon Mountain and exploring the Sable Highlands. The annual Saranac Flatwater Challenge held in the summer and the winter cross-country skiing opportunities hosted by the New Land Trust are among the attractions for the town featured in the video. The many elements which make up the close-knit community of Saranac are touted in “Community.” The programs and activities offered for residents and visitors to the town are highlighted, along with family-oriented organizations found in Saranac, such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America and 4-H. Hill and Hollow Music, a local nonprofit organization which promotes the enjoyment of chamber music, is also featured, as well as the Saranac Central School District, for the academic, athletic and artistic opportunities it offers its students. “Opportunity,” the final video in the four-part series, showcases the businesses which have thrived in the community for many years and the opportunities for future devel-

opment given the infrastructure created to date. “The idea was if you’re coming to this area for the first time, especially if you’re thinking of moving here, you should give Saranac a closer look because it’s rural, but it’s not remote,” said Delaney, playing off a similar quote in one of the videos. “It took a lot of time, a lot of effort and a lot of planning,” Delaney continued, discussing the video production process. “But, overall, I’d say the video came out pretty much as I’d envisioned it. I think it’s a fair representation of the town.” Town Supervisor Joe Gerardi agreed, saying the video has achieved its goal of providing information to attract people to the town and to bolster the pride townspeople have in their community. “This is great for people who might be looking for a place to live and it’s great to remind people within our town who might have taken what we have for granted about how much we have to offer,” said Gerardi. “Saranac offers beautiful Adirondack scenery and quality of life, and it’s only a short drive to shopping and lots of employment opportunities in Plattsburgh,” said community development director Melissa M. McManus. “Like the video says, it is rural but it's not remote.”

A Nova Bus employee at the Plattsburgh facility works under the chassis of one of several buses on the assembly line Monday. Production was uninterrupted the day of the ribbon-cutting, with tours open to the public.

YouTube From page 1 Plattsburgh, recently finished producing four short narrated videos to promote the town through the popular on-line video Web site YouTube, and the town’s Web site, www.townofsaranac.com. According to Town Councilman Gerald W. Delaney, the videos took approximately four months to produce, funded by Local Waterfront Revitalization Program funding the town received from the Department of State’s Division of Coastal Resources last year. Delaney, who spearheaded the initiative on behalf of the town council, said the videos focus on four features of the town — History, Recreation, Community and Opportunity. “When you drive up Route 3 going through Saranac, you don’t fully understand what’s here,” said Delaney. “We’ve got some awesome views in this town and there’s just so much history here. The intent was to show people what a great community this is to live in and to visit.” The first video in the series, titled “History,” gives an overview of how the town was first settled in 1802, including how five settlers were hand-picked to assist in the capture of John Wilkes Booth, the infamous assassinator of President Abraham Lincoln.

hroughout the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System, 23 member libraries are participating in the Summer Reading Program the New York State Library promotes every summer. Within this newspaper ’s readership area, eight libraries have chosen to take part to encourage children to continue reading once the school year has ended, much to the delight of people like New York State Education commissioner Richard P. Mills. “These days, families can’t afford to buy all the books they might want to read,” Mills stated in a press release. “Kids today need arm loads of books — not just for learning, but for inspiring their creative minds, and just to pass the time on a summer day.” CEFLS outreach coordinator Julie Wever said there are other benefits to having the Summer Reading Program, including an increase of usage at the libraries. “I think it’s a great opportunity to increase library usage over the summer and showcase the offerings of a lot of our

little member libraries,” Wever explained. “There’s a wealth of information and opportunities there. This really helps get families in to take part.” CEFLS is assisting their participating libraries by distributing mini-grants to help ease the cost of activities each library endures. Every year, the NYSL comes up with a theme for participating libraries to follow. This year, the theme is “Be Creative @ Your Library,” in which many of the libraries will provide special story times as well as arts and crafts. However, there is an added element this year for children who choose to take part in the program. “Every child that participates in the 2009 Statewide Summer Reading Program will receive a signed New York State Senate “Certificate of Merit” in recognition of their effort,” Sen. Elizabeth O’C. Little, R-Queensbury, stated in a letter. “Reading during the summer will not only help children perform better academically, but many will also develop a love of reading that lasts a lifetime.” Little added she has sponsored a reading program throughout the 45th district for several years, but this year chose to join forces with the NYSL. “The benefit of children reading during the summer months is well-known,” Little stated. “As a mother, grandmother and former school teacher, I have seen the difference.” The following libraries are participating in the NYSL Summer Reading Program: Dodge Memorial Library, 144 Lake St., Rouses Point. PERU — As Michelle St. Onge celebrated her 39th birthday in February, she began thinking — the next birthday she will celebrate will be the one that brings her to the age many dread — the big 4-0. “As I get closer to my 40th birthday, I have been thinking about the accomplishments and challenges that I have encountered along the way,” said St. Onge. “I came to the conclusion that I have been touched by so many people, and blessed in many ways.” Being fortunate for having had such a full life so far, St. Onge decided she needed to give back in a big way, in a way she never had before — running the annual Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco, Calif., to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. “It was important to me that whatever I do to celebrate be both personally gratifying and connect me to a higher purpose,” she said. “Running a marathon for the benefit of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society allows me to achieve both of those goals.” Though St. Onge has been a casual runner since 2001, the 26.2-mile marathon is an event unlike any other in which she’s competed. “I’ve only done 5Ks until last year when I ran the Adirondack Distance Festival’s half-marathon,” St. Onge said, referring to the 13.1-mile event held in Schroon Lake last September. “While running it, I was inspired by the huge presence of purple-shirted Team in Training runners and trainers there, so it got me thinking.” When she turned the almost as big 39, St. Onge reflected on those purple shirts and decided to join the effort. Since then, she’s been busy asking friends and family for support for the Oct. 18 event. And, with a goal of raising $5,000, she hasn’t set the bar low for her first time participating.

“I like a good challenge, and I wanted to really make a difference,” she said. “It is extremely important to raise money so that scientists can continue to work to try and find a cure for blood cancers.” Even though her fundraising efforts have just begun, St. Onge said she is “greatly encouraged” by the positive response she’s already received from local businesses and individuals. “I am touched by the generosity of the wonderful people in my circle of family and friends who are willing to support this worthy cause,” she said. And, though she is able to accept donations for her participation until shortly after the October event, St. Onge has given herself until Wednesday, July 1, to reach her fundraising goal. The idea is to be able to focus solely on her physical training at that point, to help her finish the marathon in the best time possible. “Some people may think that a small

donation doesn’t make a difference, but that’s just not true,” emphasized St. Onge. “If every person I’ve told about Team in Training consciously chose to donate a few dollars instead of splurging on a gourmet coffee on the way to work in the morning, I’d be well on my way to reaching my goal.” Those interested in making a donation toward St. Onge’s efforts may view her Team in Training page on-line at http://pages.teamintraining.org/uny /nikesf09/mstonge. Donations may also be mailed in care of St. Onge to P.O. Box 873, Peru N.Y. 12972. The Upstate New York/Vermont chapter of Team in Training will hold an informational meeting Thursday, July 30, at the Holiday Inn, 412 State Route 3, Plattsburgh, for those also wanting to sign up for this October ’s event. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. For more information, call 438-3583 or 1-866-255-3583 or visit www.teamintraining.org/uny.

an effort Gload had been hoping to host for many years. “We bantered this [idea] around for a couple years because we’ve got a lot of room out there to have some sort of a car show,” he said. Gload met with Champlain Valley Classic Cruisers president Jerry Seymour during Plattsburgh’s Battle of Plattsburgh days last September, when they were showcasing their vehicles at Veterans of Foreign War Post 125. Seymour told Gload to let him know of a date and he’d see if he could get some cars to the event. Nearly 20 cars showed up to the Pig N’ Swig, although not necessarily all were CVCC members. “It’s not really a full-blown car show,”

Gload said, “because there’s 41 classes in a car show.” “You get what you get and it’ll grow from there,” he added. Instead, people who attended the Pig N’ Swig received three tickets to vote for their three favorite cars. At the end of the day, the top three vote-getters received a first, second and third place trophy for Best in Show. Overall, the day was aimed to be familyfriendly and enjoyed by all. “Having three different things, you’re drawing in more people,” Downs said. “Not everybody rides motorcycles, and not everybody’s into cars, but they wanted to come and have a good time, a couple beers, and have pork and beef and chicken and bring the family.”

A trophy from the bank

County hatchery is a must save M

y son, Harrison, caught his first trout at the young age of 3, thanks to the folks who make the Westport Fishing Derby possible every year. Kids around the region are afforded similar experiences around this time each year, and I can’t say enough good things about the people who help make that happen. Teach a kid to fish and you are giving them a healthy life skill they will take with them always. Many kids would never get the opportunity to participate in this worthwhile outdoor pursuit if it were not for these derbies and the people who organize them. The workers at the county-operated fish hatcheries in Warren and Essex counties are a huge part of making this happen. I want to personally thank these people for what they do, as well as our county leaders for recognizing the importance of funding these facilities. Unfortunately, however, Warren County supervisors are considering axing the $100,000 it takes to operate their county trout hatchery — a casualty of their multi-million dollar budget deficit. Supervisors were to vote on the move at their June 10 meeting, but set the decision aside in order to find out if the state might consider running it. But, the state has said it most likely would not raise trout there, meaning the 25,000 trout and salmon raised at the facility would no longer hit local waters. That, quite simply, is a shame. Put aside the fact the $100,000 comes back tenfold in the revenue spent by fisherman visiting the region because of its as-

tounding trout fishing. Put aside the fact many county taxpayers are also anglers and the premier stocking done by these hatcheries gives a tangible return. Set those considerations aside for a moment, and consider the impact the hatcheries have on the lives of our children. Like its Essex County counterpart, the Warren County hatchery stocks for kids fishing derbies in a number of local communities, and stocks places like Hovey Pond as well as other popular roadside destinations for young anglers. Aren’t the smiles on the faces of these youngsters worth the $100,000 investment? My own son still has the glass fish he was awarded for the trout he caught years ago. He cherishes it, as he does the memory of catching his first fish. I ask you, should we take that memory away from future generations? Supervisors: Find somewhere else to make up your budget shortfall.

W

ith Fathers Day just around the corner, the 28th annual Lake Champlain International Father ’s Day Derby is rapidly approaching. Presented by Yamaha, the LCI is the longest running, family oriented fishing tournament in the country. Recently, while reading a promotional story about the derby, I was intrigued by a quote advising anglers that “a boat isn’t always necessary to compete. All rivers defined as Lake Champlain waters by New York and Vermont are open — and winning fish have come from the banks before.” Fishing rivers, exclusively from the banks, was something I had never considered for derby competitors. However, the potential for catching a large fish on the river or at their mouth is considerable. Area rivers, currently running with high, cloudy waters are full of food. They are certain to attract fish from the big lake. I think it would be great if some kid and his dad took a trophy fish that topped the LCI leader board, while sitting on a river bank.

Caught a big fish? Downed a monster whitetail? We want to hear about it! Send photos to: John Gereau, 14 Hand Ave., Elizabethtown, N.Y. 12932 OR e-mail to johng@denpubs.com. Include your name, phone number, and/or e-mail address.

County breaks ground for new fire training tower By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Firefighters will have a new place to train for real-world emergency situations when the construction of a new training tower is complete. Representatives from the Clinton County Office of Emergency Services and local elected officials were on hand June 4 for a groundbreaking ceremony for the tower on Emergency Services Drive. According to Eric Day, director of the county Office of Emergency Services, the construction of the tower has been under discussion for the past seven years, starting with his predecessor, Jim King. It wasn’t until about three years ago, however, serious plans were made to make the tower a reality. “Since then, there’s been serious planning and examining securing funding,” said Day. In the end, the county’s Board of Legislators stepped up to the plate to fund the approximately $650,000 project. But, it didn’t come easy. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Legislator Keith Defayette, R-Area 5, was credited by Legislature chairman James R. Langley Jr., R-Area 7, for his dedication to seeing the project through. “Keith Defayette couldn’t make it here to-

day but he really pushed for this,” said Langley, who said the biggest hurdle was budgeting the money. “We don’t spend every nickel we have, so we don’t have a whole lot of debt,” he said. “We were able to pay down what debt we had and set money aside. That’s what’s brought us to today.” “This is something you’ve earned and something that is definitely an appreciation from the legislature and the taxpayers to the fire service,” Legislator Robert W. Butler, RArea 6, told the firefighters in the crowd. “We know [volunteer] numbers are down and we know you travel all over the state of New York for training. You shouldn’t have to do that as much any more.” The structure, said Day, will actually consist of a one-story room for simulated fires and an adjacent two-story tower for search and rescue training. Construction is expected to be complete by September. Once the structure has been safety-tested, fire departments and even law enforcement agencies like the Clinton County Sheriff ’s Department and the Plattsburgh Police Department will be able to utilize the tower for training. “This tower will have a lot of different uses and a lot of different potentials,” said Day. “Having this in our own backyard will be a huge thing for the county.”

Clinton County Legislators Robert W. Butler, R-Area 6, and James R. Langley Jr., R-Area 7, were on hand for the groundbreaking of a new training tower for the county Office of Emergency Services. The gentleman, seen second and third from left, respectively, were joined by Cadyville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Charles A. Kostyk. Photo by Jeremiah S. Papineau

A HOME

Spending On Your Home Can Save You In The Long Run (ARA) - Now that warmer weather is here, people are gearing up to make some repairs and updates to their homes. From new roofs and siding to adding state-of-art kitchen and other household appliances, people have more options than ever when it comes to making purchases that can help them save money and the environment. The ENERGY STAR program, a joint effort from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, is designed to help people save money on their utility bills while reducing greenhouse gasses. In 2008, more than $19 billion was saved on utility bills through the program. According to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, investing $3,000 to $8,000 in your home -- not including rebates -- can result in savings of 10 to 30 percent annually on utility bills. For people who are looking to sell their homes or simply a good investment, energy-efficient options can make your home more valuable. According to the EPA, a $1 investment in your home can add about $20 in value. In other words, for every $1,000 invested in energy efficiency, you gain about $20,000 in value. Colby Swanson, a building and construction expert for BASF, a manufacturer of energy-efficient products for the home, offers these recommendations on how you can save yourself money by making improvements on your house. * Start with improving the envelope of the building (specifically attic air sealing and insulating) before buying things like a high-efficiency furnace, air conditioner or solar-power cells. The money you may save would be wasted if the building can’t contain the expensive conditioned air. Swanson says that air leakage from the house through the ceiling is one of the largest contributors for heating and cooling loss with improperly installed attic insulation close behind. Focusing on attic air sealing and properly installed insulation is generally the most cost effective energy and comfort related improvement in an existing home. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that up to 40 percent of the energy cost of heating and cooling a structure is wasted by uncontrolled air leakage. “The attic has some of the most extreme weather on the planet,” Swanson says. “It’s extremely hot in the summer and bitterly cold in the winter. Therefore, air sealing and insulating this extremely harsh environment from the house is crucial.” * BASF makes a product that could save homeowners a lot of money; a polyurethane foam spray, Comfort Foam and Enertite Foam, replaces the conventional, fiberglass or cellulose insulation in the attic and walls. Spray foam is the premium insulating product on the market because of its ability to air seal and insulate at the same time. “Professionally installed foam in the attic will far outperform the conventional products both in air sealing and insulating capability resulting in much more comfortable homes and substantially lower heating and cooling bills,” says Swanson. “Studies indicate that a thorough job of leak sealing can cut your home’s total air leakage by 33 to 46 percent -- reducing your heating and cooling bills up to 20 percent. To help further the energy efficiencies of a home and help homeowners remain environmentally conscious, don’t dispose of the attic insulation being replaced, recycle it by placing it on top of the newly placed foam.” * Another simple and less costly way for homeowners to make their homes more energy-efficient: apply a radiant barrier coating that is sprayed on the underside of the roof in the attic, which will lower heating and cooling bills and increase comfort. In the summer, it reflects some of the heat that radiates through the roof deck back outside and, to a lesser degree, in the winter reflects heat back into the house. One option is Radiance, made by BASF, a water-based product that can be sprayed on to the underside of the roof or applied with a paint roller. * After the ceiling is air tight and insulated correctly, consider appliances. Next time you need to replace your home’s water heater, consider this: after the furnace and air conditioner it is the biggest user of energy in a house. As of 2009, you can now purchase a water heater certified as an ENERGY STAR appliance. * Show me the money. Financial help is available. What many homeowners may not know is that they have the opportunity to leverage many rebates provided by local utility and state programs on top of the federal tax incentives to help finance home energy-efficiency investments. These attractive rebates and incentives vary widely (approximately 5 percent to 50 percent savings) to help off-set a homeowners investment to air seal, insulate or purchase high efficiency appliances. The federal government offers a 30 percent rebate of up to $5,000 on energy investment.

Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow...

WE E’ RE RE H ERE ERE TO O S TAY TAY T OO OO!

“We are pleased to inform you on May 14th, Chrysler designated your Sales and Service Agreement(s) to be assumed and assigned to a new company that is purchasing the primary operating assets of Chrysler.” “We want you and your team to play an increasingly important role in our company’s rebirth to prosperity. We are making every effort to improve the conditions necessary to increase the value of your tranchise.” “We plan to continue “business as usual” with respect to all warranty and incentive payments. This will allow your dealership to remain focused on maximizing business opportunities and satisfying customers throughout this process.” “We deeply appreciate your support and efforts on Chrysler’s behalf and again we look forward to continuing to work with you to build a new Chrysler.” Sincerely, JIM PRESS, VICE CHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENT, CHRYSLER LLC Thank you to all our loyal customers for helping to make this happen. We appreciate your friendship and support. To our future customers, please come and see what the Adirondack difference is all about. We are proud to have been your local Chrysler dealer for 64 years. New and used cars are arriving daily. If we do not have what you want, we will gladly locate it for you. We will continue to provide you with great savings, outstanding service, and friendly smiles when you visit our dealership. Have a great summer, George & Julie Huttig
