Cocktails will host benefit July 19 for Plattsburgh woman Brenda Fountain diagnosed with rare and fatal lung disease By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — It was more than one year ago when Brenda Fountain was diagnosed with desquamative interstitial pneumonia, a very rare lung disease. The 35-year-old Plattsburgh native and her fiancé, Fred Jeffries, have had a difficult time dealing with her condition, which is considered to be fatal, said Jeffries. “Not much is known about the disease,” said Jeffries. “We really only know what we’ve read on-line, but every day there is something new to read about.”

What Jeffries and Fountain do know, he said, is there is “very little treatment” for the condition. Fountain currently sees a lung specialist in Plattsburgh on a regular basis and travels to Boston, Mass., every few months to see a specialist there, Jeffries added. Since her diagnosis, Fountain has had to utilize an oxygen tank to assist in her breathing, and she has been unable to work, said Jeffries. “She can’t go without [the oxygen tank],” he said. “The worst part is she knows that she’s eventually going to pass on but it could be any time.” The thought of losing Fountain — his fiancée and friend — is something Jeffries said he hopes will never happen, despite what is known about the disease.

The Tea Party returns A crowd of more than 150 people turned out for the second local Tea Party at Trinity Park in Plattsburgh, co-organized by Oliver M. Barie and Jonathan Nelson, July 4. Many people raised flags and held signs protesting government spending and taxation. Information to be useful for residents and visitors alike By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com

P L AT T S B U R G H — The city of Plattsburgh will host a fireworks display viewable from downtown Plattsburgh this Saturday, July 11, beginning at 9:30 p.m. In last week’s edition, it was incorrectly announced the display would take place Friday, July 10. PERU — It’s been said you can have the best Web site in the world, but if no one knows about it, it doesn’t matter. In an effort to avoid that, the town of Peru is spreading the word about it’s recently redesigned Web site, www.perutown.com. Town resident Donald F. McBrayer was selected by the town about two months ago to take the town’s previous Web site and mold it into a more

attractive and userfriendly site that would appeal to residents and those from out of town. “I was attending a town board meeting when the supervisor [Donald A. Covel Jr.] said they were looking for someone who knew how to redesign Web sites,” said McBrayer. “I knew a little about that, so I agreed.” McBrayer began working on development of the new site in his spare time, pulling information from the old site and meeting with

The new Web site for the town of Peru, www.perutown.com, was recently launched, providing townspeople and those from outside the community with easy-to-access information.

SARANAC — The Saranac Farmers Market was such a success last year, vendors are joining together to host it again. The market will return to the pavilion behind Saranac Town Hall on State Route 3 this Saturday, July 11, offering fresh produce, baked goods and other products from local vendors. Lisa M. Racette, who will serve as market manager this year, said several vendors will be returning from last year ’s market, with a few new ones lined up as well. “We’re trying to expand a little bit from last year,” said Racette, who noted maple products, Adirondack chairs, and even live chicks are also among items expected to be offered. “We want to do what we did last year, just more of it.” The market was reestablished last June after an extended hiatus, much to the delight of vendors and people who attended the market, said Racette. It was important to keep the momentum going, she added. “It’s very important to have the market in Saranac,” said Racette, whose own business, Rock Bottom Farm, will be at the market again this year. “We have a lot of elderly people here, especially, so it saves them from traveling or having to find someone to help them travel into Plattsburgh.” Among the new things planned for this year ’s market are the hours of opera-
