Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Cars, trucks and motorcycles are expected to swarm to 8 Ball Billiards Café on State Route 9 as the business once again hosts Hot Rods for Hospice. The event, now in its third year, will be held next Sunday, Aug. 9, raising money for Hospice of the North Country, a nonprofit organization which provides endof-life care to those in need. jeremiah@denpubs.com SARANAC — The Saranac Flatwater Challenge has attracted people from across the region and from points far beyond since it started 15 years ago. Seventy-one-year-old Glen Vandewinkel is among them, hailing from the town of Webster in Monroe County. Each year, for the past 10 years, Vandewinkel has made the approximately 275-mile trip to the town of Saranac for the challenge. Being an active canoer since the spry, young age of 55, Vandewinkel has trekked across the country in search of scenic, yet challenging, places to paddle competitively. “I like to race,” he said simply. Vandewinkel had been participating in various canoe races when he hap-

pened upon an article about the Saranac Flatwater Challenge in a canoeing magazine. He decided to give it a shot, and admits he’s been hooked ever since. “This is a beautiful course,” he said. “It’s nice clean water. Not too rocky. It’s just a good river to paddle on.” Each year, Vandewinkel opts to participate in the 15-mile race offered during the challenge — which also include one-mile, five-mile and nine-mile races. “I like the longer races,” he said. And, each year, Vandewinkel brings along a member of his family. This year, he brought his 10-year-old grandson, Parker Johnson, even though Johnson had only been in a canoe three times before — including practicing that morning in the Saranac River.

Berry good breakfast

Free blueberry pancakes were on the menu as part of the New Land Trust’s first Blueberry Festival, held in Saranac July 25. The nonprofit organization held the festival at its main lodge on Plumadore Road to bring awareness of the 287 acres of land it owns in the Adirondack Mountains, and makes available for public use. Here, Dan and Mika Mannix of Morrisonville enjoy pancakes with their sons, Brady, 4, and Michael, 1. For more information about the New Land Trust, visit their Web site at www.newlandtrust.org. PLATTSBURGH — Last year, the Joint Council for Economic Opportunity of Clinton and Franklin Counties held a golf tournament and golf ball drop to raise funds for the JCEO Foundation. This year, they are planning both fundraisers again, with a few minor changes. JCEO fundraising cochairs Deb Ciccone and Michelle Boynton took over planning aspects of this year ’s fundraisers, choosing to reevaluate what the money would go towards this year. “This year, we actually formed a committee and kind of looked at all the programs and said, ‘Okay, which programs is in most need,’” explained Ciccone. “Looking at numbers of individuals who had used the

pantries in the past and where we were already, we had seen a significant increase.” Due to funding cuts, Ciccone and Boynton determined putting the fundraising money toward JCEO’s 12 emergency food pantries

would be best, especially for those in need during the holiday season. Another change the cochairs made was to reduce the prices for the golf balls. “We thought $20 was a little steep for tickets, so, we
