SARANAC LAKE — Janice D. Washburn considers herself lucky to be alive. It was four years ago when the now 55-year-old Keeseville resident was returning to work from her lunch break and noticed something wasn’t quite right. “I started to feel dizzy,” Washburn recalled. “I thought I was having a stroke.” Though her memory of that day is still fuzzy, Washburn said she remembers being taken by ambulance to CVPH Medical Center, just minutes away from her office. Upon further evaluation, it was found she had a ruptured brain aneurysm and doctors immediately ordered her to be airlifted to Fletcher Allen Healthcare in

Park improvements to keep moving forward Children still able to enjoy activities at LaFontaine Park despite fix-up hold-up

SOUTH PLATTSBURGH — After a 50-year history, the South Plattsburgh Volunteer Fire Department took the plunge and made some immense upgrades, now they are seeing both stations as home. After the establishment of the South Plattsburgh Fire District in 1959, the department built their first station — referred to as “Station One” — on State Route 22 in 1960, followed by a second station — “Station Two” — on Route 9 the following year. At the time they were built, the stations met the needs of the department, as they only responded to approximately 50 calls during the first couple years. As the years went on, however, calls increased and a need for a bigger space became evident.

DANNEMORA — Though it may look the same as it has in recent years, improvements are still under way at the village of Dannemora’s LaFontaine Park. Village of Dannemora Youth Commission coordinator Kristina O’Neil said plans are still moving forward to utilize a $150,000 matching grant awarded to the village last year through the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Last summer, O’Neil shared the village’s plans with the Clinton County Free Trader Today, which included developing enhanced drainage and grading the existing baseball and soccer fields at the Smith Street park. The existing basketball, tennis and volleyball courts were also expected to see upgrades, ac-
cording to plans drafted by Plattsburgh engineering firm Architectural and Engineering Design Associates. “They’re still in the works,” O’Neil said of the improvements. “There’s been some work on the drainage and there were some problems with that but they seem to be taken care of now. The drainage took up a big chunk of [the grant] and regrading the fields.” The village is working with C & E Fencing Co., Plattsburgh, to install new nets and posts to the park’s tennis courts, which O’Neil said she expects to be completed by the end of the summer. The rest of the work, including installing a new piece of playground equipment at the park, is being performed by volunteers, which is difficult with a limited number of people pitching in, said O’Neil. “It’s all volunteers, so we get done

Each section of the mural was
put together by a different school, beginning with Northern Adirondack Central focusing on the natives of the land. The mural will also depict Samuel de Champlain’s exploration, settlement, the revolution, daily life, the Battle of Plattsburgh, Dannemora Prison, and transportation. “Anastasia [Pratt] decided to go to 1878, which is when Keeseville ... was the last town in the county to be chartered,” explained Morse. The project’s unveiling will be held Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m. and the community, especially the students who worked on the mural, are encouraged to attend. “[The students] deserve to be at

epping up an older computer can usually be accomplished through a hardware upgrade. Perhaps the most common of which is adding more RAM. This week, we look at the basics of adding RAM. What is RAM? It’s an acronym for Random Access Memory and it describes the physical memory chips installed in the PC. The random comes from the fact that any of the memory cells can be directly accessed without going through other cells. When a system is booted it goes through various system checks and, if everything is good, copies of certain files are transferred from the hard drive to RAM. Once the data is in RAM the system can create a desktop display and be ready to go. Because everything running on the PC is active in RAM systems run better when the amount of RAM installed is not at the lower end of the limits. Older Windows XP and Vista 32-bit operating systems, except “starter versions” handle 4GB of memory in theory but in practice it’s 3.23GB. If the system under consideration has 1GB or less, it is a clear upgrade candidate. Start with three easy questions: What is installed now? Does the system support dual-channeling? What is the slot situation? All three questions are easily answered with a trip to www.crucial.com. Head over and run the Crucial System

ver wonder what the Clinton County Office for the Aging does? The Office for the Aging provides a wide array of services to residents age 60 and older and their caregivers. The OFA contracts many services through community agencies, while we operate some directly. The mission of the organization is to assist people and caregivers to empower and sustain their independence and to advocate for themselves by developing a continuum of opportunity, support and care. The OFA accomplishes this through a network of voluntary, private and public organizations and advocacy at the federal, state and local levels. The organization aims to do several things, including promoting the dignity and independence of the older person ; ensuring comprehensive and coordinated services address the needs of older persons; and fostering public awareness of the value and contribution of older persons in the community. Funding is received from the federal government under
Title III of the Older Americans Act, the New York State Office for the Aging, local municipalities, and private grants. We offer most services for a contribution or at no charge. The Clinton County Office for the Aging does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, age, sex, national origin or sponsor, or subject any persons to any discrimination in his civil rights.

Reader mail: stockpiling and Internet coupon fraud
I
t’s time to answer some questions from readers like you who are learning to Super-Coupon:
Q: I read your column about stockpiling groceries that you find on sale. How much do I need to buy at one time of something to stockpile it? I’m not comfortable doing bulk buying. A: “Stockpiling” is a term that many coupon enthusiasts use to refer to the practice of buying ahead of schedule. When we stockpile, we attempt to beat the stores at their own pricing games by buying enough of an item to sustain our household’s needs until the next time that item goes on sale. It doesn’t necessarily refer to bulk buying but rather just buying more than you immediately need. If an item is nonperishable or has a long shelf life, buy as many of that item as you have coupons for. Add them to your stockpile, and use them over the next few weeks instead of running to the store for that item. Here’s an example. If pasta sauce is on sale for $1.29, and I have six 75-cent coupons, I will buy six jars of sauce and pay just 54 cents a jar. While my immediate needs for this week’s meal would only include one jar, the price of the pasta sauce will likely be back up to $2.99 next week. When I decide to make pasta again, I can go down to my pantry and get another jar, which I bought at 54 cents. I don’t need to go to the grocery store and pay full price, because I bought a little more than I needed last week when it was on sale. When you think about doing this on a larger scale with everything we buy, it’s easy to see how we can save in the long term. It’s not bulk buying so much as it is buying just a little more than we need in the short term. You will become comfortable with “shopping at home” for those items from your own pantry versus running to the store and paying that higher price. Stockpiling teaches you to shop on a price-based basis versus a needs-based basis.
A: While most stores accept Internet coupons, it’s true that some do not. Counterfeit coupons have always been a problem for stores. With the advent of the Internet, new problems have arisen, especially when counterfeiters make realistic-looking coupons and post them online. If many people print and redeem the fake coupons, stores lose money because they cannot redeem the fakes with the manufacturer. To avoid these issues, some stores have issued a blanket No Internet Coupons policy. Do you need to be afraid of using Internet coupons? Not at all. There are hundreds of leBy Jill Cataldo gitimate coupons available on the Internet every day. To know whether or not an Internet coupon is legitimate, look to see where the coupon originates. If it is posted on a manufacturer or store Web site, it’s legitimate and perfectly fine to use. If it is posted on someone’s personal site or a file-sharing site, you have no way to verify its origin, so you shouldn’t use it. If you’re looking on manufacturers’ sites for coupons in the first place, you won’t come across any coupons that are fraudulent. It’s important to note, too, that you cannot make a photocopy of a coupon that you printed from the Internet, a common misconception among new coupon users. Some people assume that because it printed from their printer they can copy it and make as many as they would like. But can you copy a dollar bill? No. And you can’t copy a coupon, either. Internet coupons have unique serial numbers and bar codes. While you might get away with passing photocopies at your store, your store will ultimately pay the price when they go to redeem them, since they’ll only get credit for one coupon with that serial number.

CLINTON TODAY - 5
Reflecting on July and looking ahead to the rest of summer J
uly was going to be the beginning of summer but unfortunately, as I write to you, the weather has not cooperated yet as rain is the norm. Let’s hope August brings some long-lasting sunshine! My July was extremely busy as usual. I began the month attending the New York State Conference of Mayors meeting in Saratoga Springs. Most mayors are experiencing the same challenges as I am in their cities, towns, and villages. The 4th of July Parade and Fireworks, Mayor ’s Cup and Fireworks, and Quadricentennial events occurred. I always appreciate all of the efforts by city employees, sponsors and volunteers involved with these events. The public does not understand the work that is involved with these events, unfortunately. I attended The Mayor ’s Cup Race at Airborne Speedway which I always truly enjoy. Mike Perrotte, Steve Fuller, and all of their staff do an outstanding job at Airborne.
The FLW Tour held their regional final fishing tournament in Plattsburgh. The final weigh-in was held at the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse with several thousand people in attendance. I attended a reception for the FLW staff, the 2009 World Cup United States Bobsled winners, and NASCAR driver Geoff Bodine which was thoroughly enjoyable. Keep an eye on our bobsled team at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics! FLW CEO Charlie Evans, his staff, and the professional anglers not only love Plattsburgh and Lake Champlain but are first class people as well. I have never met such sincere and nice people as those associated with the FLW. I attended the Wal-mart grand re-opening with Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett. I was
Donations encouraged for needed service This year marks the 20th year that North Country Life Flight has served our region with its air rescue mission. When I experienced a critical illness; one I was not expected to survive, North Country Life Flight came to my aid. I credit them with not only being part of the team that helped save my life, but they also helped minimize my disabilities through their excellent care and quick transport to a distant trauma center. You don’t see their name in papers or media often. Given the critical injuries and illnesses of their patients, along with concerns for privacy, they don’t seek publicity for the work they do. But I can tell you, they are an extremely professional and hardworking group of people that deserve our support. They do their job quietly; they are "neighbors helping neighbors." Today, I write this as a volunteer with North Country Life Flight; I’m trying to "pay forward" the tremendous gift of life I was given. I’m hoping everyone who appreciates their 20 years of service will join me in saying thank you and being as generous as they are able. We’d also love to receive some patient/family stories that we can share on the North Country Life Flight web site and blog. Visit at www.northcountrylifeflight.org To commemorate this 20th anniversary year, I am asking all my North Country neighbors
a judge at the Sunrise Rotary Boat Festival of Lights which continues to grow in popularity. I was the starter of the YMCA Bike Race which I enjoy each year. I attended the Spencer ARL event welcoming this company into our community. They will be a supporting company supplier for Nova Bus which is very important for the entire region. I met with leaders of the New York State Power Authority to discuss my concerns with power issues we are all facing. I performed two wedding ceremonies in July. I was honored to attend the groundbreaking of the $37 million PSUC Science Building which will be a wonderful addition to the university. John Ettling and his staff have done an outstanding job at Plattsburgh State. I participated in the Hospice Golf Tourna-
ment which is a very special event. Each year, dozens of volunteers work on this event with generous sponsors to support this organization. It is always a first class event. City Hall has been busy as well with constituent concerns and complaints. I have begun the 2010 budget process which will be very challenging. Personnel issues continue with the city workforce. The recent burglaries have been a real cause of concern in the community but our police department has done an outstanding job apprehending these criminal types. We will continue to do the best we can. Hopefully, August will bring some weather relief and enjoyment as winter is around the corner. Please enjoy the remaining part of summer! Donald Kasprzak is the mayor of the city of Plattsburgh. His column appears regularly in the Clinton County Free Trader Today.
to join me in supporting their critical service. I am only one of the many patients they have helped over the 20 years but, like many others, I know first-hand how valuable that service is. I’ve met some of the former patients and their families at events. We’ve shared hugs, laughter and even tears. We also share the gratitude for the chance of an extended life that North Country Life Flight helped provide. I’ve set a goal of $20,000 from new donors this summer to help North Country Life Flight remain a viable service, ready to respond to the needs of this region’s critically ill and injured. Together, we can meet that goal if we all respond today. I’d like 999 of my North Country neighbors to send a check of $20 or more to North Country Life Flight, PO Box 994, Saranac Lake, NY 12983. Whatever you can afford will make a difference. I’ll write my check today. Please join me in supporting this important mission. Jan Washburn Keeseville

Former North Country Shopper Center demolition now under way By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — A building that has been a familiar sight in the town of Plattsburgh for more than 40 years will soon be no more. Demolition of the former North Country Shopping Center on State Route 9 began Aug. 3, as crews used an excavator to bring down the circa 1968 structure. The process to demolish the building will take approximately four to six weeks, said Peter W. Edelmann, president of EuroWest Companies, Essex, Vt., the firm which owns the former shopping center property. “Every development project has unique aspects to it. This one has been challenging,” Edelmann said. The shopping center was originally expected to be demolished earlier this year, but there was more work to be done than originally expected, including asbestos abatement, said Edelmann. Now, with more and more portions of the building coming down on a daily basis, Edelmann said plans to redevelop the site, which have been in the works since October 2007, are continuing to move forward. The plans unveiled nearly two years ago
included establishing 600,000-square-feet of mixed-use commercial buildings. Then, the plans included attracting restaurant chains, retail stores, grocery stores, and even a bank to the site. Though the economic state of the nation has changed drastically since 2007, Edelmann said the plans remain virtually unchanged, with the exception of the length of time it could take to bring businesses to the site. “It’s a tough economy to build it all at once,” admitted Edelmann. “It’s going to take a number of years to have some very interesting components. Hopefully, by the end of this year, we’ll be able to announce the first one.” “We’ll try to stay as true as possible to the original plan,” Edelmann added. Already, EuroWest has seen great success with Cumberland 12 Cinemas, the 12-screen megaplex which opened on the property last December, said Edelmann. It’s both his hope and the hope of Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernard C. Bassett that success will continue with the redevelopment of the rest of the property. “It’s not an ‘if,’ it’s a ‘when,’” Bassett said of the attraction of new businesses to the site. “And, this accelerates the ‘when.’”
Crews work to demolish the former North Country Shopping Center building on State Route 9 in the town of Plattsburgh. Demolition has been delayed due to a need to perform asbestos abatement at the old structure. The work is expected to take four to six weeks, according to Peter W. SUNY Plattsburgh breaks ground on newest addition in 35 years By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com

PLATTSBURGH — Ground has been broken for the first new building at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh since 1974. A ceremonial groundbreaking was planned for the $37 million SUNY Plattsburgh Hudson Hall addition and renovation project July 31, but, due to rain, the event was held indoors at the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium of Hawkins Hall. University president John C. Ettling joined several state and local officials to announced the start of the three-phase project, which is expected to be completed in spring 2011. The first phase will consist of the construction of the new addition, said Ettling, which will be built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver standards. By building to those specifications, the building will be able to be used as a teaching tool, with displays which educate occupants about green practices. Other phases will include a ground-up renovation of the existing Hudson Hall and much-needed improvements to Ward Hall, which houses the university’s anthropology and archaeology labs. “We’ve had prospective students come through here with their parents who have taken a look at our laboratories. They’re all very polite and many of them ultimately decide to come.” However, some have commented they’ve had
“better facilities in their high schools,” said Ettling. “Well, we’re changing that,” he said. State Sen. Elizabeth O’C. Little, R-Queensbury, said the groundbreaking held special meaning for her, as her daughter received her master ’s degree from the university. “It’s very, very exciting to have this happening and seeing our campus grow,” said Little, who added the university has been a benefit to her family. State Assemblywoman Teresa R. Sayward, RWillsboro, was also in attendance for the historic event, representing both her Assembly district and that of fellow Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey, R-Peru, who was unable to attend the groundbreaking. “More than ever before, the students here in New York State are counting on the SUNY system,” said Sayward. “This building will only add to what we as Americans have to be if we’re going to continue to be leaders in this world.” SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, who spent last week touring Clinton Community College and SUNY Plattsburgh commended all involved for continuing the work of providing high-quality education in a high-quality setting. “This anchors SUNY Plattsburgh in the work it does best, which is the education of our young people,” said Zimpher, “and really the future of New York and our whole environment.”
Fire Department From page 1 “Over time the fire trucks have gotten bigger and larger,” said Fire Chief Jeffrey Santor. “They just didn’t fit in the past stations. [Station One] has a lot of training features built in. We can do some training inside; year-round things that we could only do in good weather before.” The station also has administrative spaces to allow room for people to work more efficiently. “There’s office space here for myself ... the line officers, the department offices and the fire district office,” said Santor. In the old Station One, everyone shared one office, which was half the size of the office in which Santor now works. “We went from sharing two computers, to ... 12 between the two buildings,” he said. Other upgrades in the building include a commercial kitchen, day room with couches and a big-screen television, an exercise room with commercial exercise equipment and a large meeting room that can hold up to 80 people. Santor explained the need for the exercise room and day room is to give the volunteer firefighters a reason to be at the station. “If a guy or gal are working out here, they’re that much closer to the fire truck, which is that much faster to get to your house if you have a problem,” he said. The total cost of the two buildings was $5 million, which is being paid for with a 30year bond.
Prior to the beginning of the SPVFD, the department that is now the Morrisonville Volunteer Fire Department responded to calls in the South Plattsburgh area. “A group of local residents in the late ‘50s saw the need for their own fire protection closer, so you don’t have a delay in fire trucks coming,” said Santor. A large fire in South Plattsburgh is what is believed to have been the impetus which got community members to work to form a fire district. “A lot of petitions, a lot of knocking on doors, trying to get the support,” Santor explained. “Because obviously a fire district, it was going to be a taxing entity, so it was going to cost people more money.” However, the money the district can raise through taxes is what has created the two state-of-the-art fire stations, which will be open to public viewing this Sunday, Aug. 9. Station One, located at 4105 State Route 22, will have a dedication ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. Station Two, located at 4444 State Route 9, will have its dedication at 3 p.m. “We’re going to do a ceremonial flag raising, we have a few speakers that are going to talk about the history of the fire district; how the fire district currently operates,” Santor explained. Instead of a ribbon cutting, the department has decided to have a hose uncoupling, followed by tours of the building, open to

the public. “We’re pretty excited to be here,” Santor said. “We’re excited to have new buildings and use them to their fullest potential we can.” Currently, the fire department has 43 vol-
unteers, but Santor said they are always looking for more. Those interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter with the SPVFD are encouraged to stop by either station on Monday evenings.

The ride, which has traditionally begun in Rouses Point, will begin this year at the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 1134 Wicker St., next Sunday, Aug. 16. “We actually had a request for a route that went more along the lake and through the Adirondacks,” said Susan Plumb, coordinator of this year ’s ride. The parade-style route will leave the Wal-Mart parking lot, taking State Routes 9N and 22 to Westport and Elizabethtown, continuing on Route 9N to Keeseville. The ride will continue on Route 9N to Bear Swamp Road in Peru, taking State Route 22 to State Route 22B through Schuyler Falls and Morrisonville. The route will then continue on State Route 3 through Plattsburgh to

crawl encourages riders to stick together, in order to maintain the stirring image of hundreds of bikers riding in unison. The Jeff Wyand Miracle Ride began in 2005, then known as “Biking for Miracles.” The ride was established by Tom Wyand of Plattsburgh, in honor of his son, Jeff, who was battling pediatric cancer at the time. Jeff Wyand succumbed to his cancer in November 2006, at the age of 18. The ride was then named in his memory. Last year, the event raised $54,000. This year, Plumb said the goal for the ride is to raise $60,000. “Of course, if we could just surpass what we raised last year, we’d be thrilled,” she said. Registration for the ride will be held from 9-11:30 a.m., with the ride to immediately follow. Broad Street. The ride will conclude by turning onto Peru Street, following Bridge Street to Dock Street, where it will end at the Naked Turtle. “Other than [the route], the event’s pretty much stayed the same,” said Plumb. That includes the traditional barbecue celebration held at the Naked Turtle upon the completion of the ride, she said. Also, this year ’s event will see the return of the ride’s “poker crawl.” Anyone who pays an additional amount to enter the crawl will be able to pick up playing cards at three different locations along the route, receiving a total of five cards in all. When the ride ends, each participant is checked to see who has the best poker hand. First through third prizes — and a consolation prize for the player with the bust hand — will be awarded. In the event of a tie, a blind raffle will be held to determine the winner. The poker crawl is similar to a traditional poker run, though in that scenario, riders traditionally split up to get their cards as quick as possible. The

During her more than 30 years previously spent serving local government, both have been issues on the table. “I think we need to look at it,” Duprey said. “I think there are some areas where we’ll find it will be a good fit and there will be some where it probably will not. and I think we just need to look at more of that,” said Duprey. Under the Government Reorganization and Citizen Empowerment Act, there is no state mandate or language in the law that requires any action to be taken by taxpayers, said Cuomo. However, the attorney general said he hopes this will give them the motivation to make up their own minds about the efficiency of government in New York State. “If you like the situation you’re in, if you like the taxes you’re paying, if you can’t imagine a better scenario than you’re current scenario, do nothing,” said Cuomo. “But, if you want to find a way to reduce taxes, if you want to find a way to start a discussion about how did we get here, how did these governments develop in the first place and where can we find some economies of scales, this is the vehicle to do it.”

Despite the slowdown in getting the improvements completed, O’Neil said the youth commission has seen a steady amount of children utilize the park through its summer recreation program. Soccer, volleyball, baseball, basketball and kickball are among the sports kids are offered through the program, said O’Neil, as well as arts and crafts.
The youth commission’s formal soccer program, however, will utilize the town of Dannemora’s soccer field on General Leroy Manor Road when that begins later this month, said O’Neil. “The field here won’t be graded in time,” she said. Eventually, when work is complete at LaFontaine Park, O’Neil said she hopes to see use of the park and participation in park sporting events increase. “Our goal is to have all our own sports teams,” said O’Neil, who said many children have joined teams in neighboring communities such as Lyon Mountain, since work has been performed at the park.

Life Flight From page 1 Washburn, feeling compelled to help North Country Life Flight continue its mission, then began volunteering her services to help raise funding for the organization. “I felt that I could make a difference,” she said. Most recently, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of North Country Life Flight’s founding, Washburn levied a challenge to her fellow community members to raise $20,000. It’s a challenge she hopes will both raise money and awareness for all the organizations does. “I feel that not many people really know a lot about Life Flight,” she said. “They may see the helicopter, but not know what they really do until, like me, they need their services.” Mary Jane Connors, president and chief executive officer of North Country Life Flight, said she was more than pleased to learn of Washburn’s goal. “I think it’s great what she’s doing,” said Connors. “Since she was helped by Life Flight, she’s made it her role to pay it forward so it will be here for the next person and so they won’t have to worry about the cost either.” North Country Life Flight utilizes helicopters from the New York State Police avia-
tion unit in its mission, explained Connors. The main expenses for which North Country Life Flight is responsible — an amount that fluctuates year after year depending on the number of people it serves — are providing medical equipment, medications and a combination of paid and volunteer medical personnel who are nationally-certified. In order to do this, North Country Life Flight relies on support it receives through fundraisers and occasional grant funding. However, the medevac service mainly relies on donations from the community at large, said Connors.
“Our largest funding is from individual donations,” she said. “In fact, that’s what’s enabled us to be free for so long.” North Country Life Flight is the only nonprofit medevac service in the area, explained Connors, serving Clinton, Essex, Franklin, St. Lawrence, Warren, Washington, Hamilton, Herkimer and portions of Jefferson and Lewis counties. The second closest medevac services for the region fly out of Albany and Syracuse and are commercial services, charging patients roughly $20,000 per flight or more. “North Country Life Flight
is a unique organization,” said Chuck Pandolph, chief flight nurse for North Country Life Flight. “It’s very altruistic in its mission in that we don’t fly for money. We fly because there’s a need.” Without having North Country Life Flight centrallylocated at Saranac Lake’s Adirondack Regional Airport, response times to pre-hospital emergencies and inter-facility transfers would increase sig-
nificantly, Pandolph said. And, in a service where every minute counts, that could literally mean the difference between life and death. “And, nobody gets a bill, which is a wonderful thing,” said Washburn. “That’s why community support is really important.” Those interested in making a contribution to North Country Life Flight may do so by calling 891-6853 or sending
donations in care of the organization to 49 HelmsMueller Road, P.O. Box 994, Saranac Lake N.Y. 12983. Donations may also be arranged through the United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties Inc. by calling 563-0028. like a baseball scout’s tabulations. He left little to chance. With a wealth of natural resources available throughout the Adirondack region it’s a wonder that local schools don’t offer similar opportunities for non-traditional athletes. The trend has already started elsewhere in the country. The potential for student anglers to continue with the sport is also growing, as colleges continue to sponsor teams of Bass Anglers. For the past four years, the National Collegiate Bass Anglers Championships have attracted teams from many of the nation’s finest schools. As the nation’s top professional bass anglers continue to tout Lake Champlain’s amazing fishery, the potential to host local high school teams spans the region from Whitehall to Rouses Point and inland from Saranac Lake to Old Forge. Imagine the scene, as college scouts gather at the Northern New York High School Bass Weigh-In with promises of scholarships for the Finalists. Anything’s possible. Maybe kids won’t have to skip school to go fishing in the future and maybe flippin’ sticks will replace lacrosse sticks in gym class. Once you get over the unlikely prospect of a student lettering in bass fishing or getting a scholarship to fish for some Division I school, consider this: Bass fishing already has become a recognized high school activity in Illinois. And a group of fishermen in the bass-rich Ozarks are pushing for the sport to gain the same status in Missouri. “I know I would have had more interest in school if there had been a bass fishing team,” said John Neporadny of Lake Ozark, Mo., a nationally known outdoors writer. “This has the potential to bring in a whole new group of kids who hadn’t been involved in sports before.” The concept already has been endorsed in Illinois, the first state to offer bass fishing as a state-sanctioned high-school activity. This spring, 214 of the 775 Illinois high schools will compete in a tournament series to determine a state champion.

nthony was small for his age and although he was a good athlete, by the time he got to high school he couldn’t run as fast, jump as high, or throw as hard as his classmates. After he transferred to a local prep school, he played varsity soccer for his fall sport but was unsure of what he would do in the spring. He didn’t have many alternatives, it was either golf or tennis. His father was a guest of mine and we had fished together for many years. Anthony had always accompanied him on the journeys north and by the time he was a teenager, Anthony was a proficient flyfisherman. As the spring semester approached, Anthony sought an alternative to the usual team sports. He looked into paddled sports, biking and trail running. I offered to help in any way I could. Finally, after consulting with the school’s athletic director, I agreed to serve as Anthony’s angling coach. Rather than play varsity golf or tennis, Anthony decided to take up flyfishing as his spring sport. He was the only athlete in the school to approach the playing field without wearing spikes or tennis whites. Anthony’s preparation involved tying flies, prepping his leaders and patching his waders before game day. The spring semester was consumed with outings on the Ausable, Boquet, Saranac and numerous local small streams. His opponents knew the playing field well, and they were wily, cunning and strong. Like a true sportsman, Anthony battled them in the spirit of fair play and always released his finned foes to fight another day. He kept exacting records of fish taken, insect hatches, water temperatures and water levels. His fishing log looked

Jackson McCabe, son of Matt and Carolyn McCabe, Saratoga, displays a nice smallmouth bass recently taken on the Saranac.
Notes from the DEC Outdoor travelers should take note of several recent announcements that will affect anglers, hunters, boaters and paddlers. Attention Adirondack Big Game Hunters: Rehabilitation work on the Raquette River Boat Launch, in the town of Harrietstown, will begin this fall shortly after the Sept. 11-13 running of Adirondack Canoe Classic race. The boat launch, also known as “The Crusher”, will be closed for use throughout the Northern Zone Big Game Season. Hunters who plan to hunt lands around the river should seek alternate river access points such as Axton Landing on the Corey’s Road. Saranac Lake Chain: Until futher notice, operation of the lower lock, between Second Pond and Oseetah Lake, is significantly limited due to problems with the lock’s hydraulic system. The lock is closed every evening from 5:30 pm to 9 am the next morning. Operation of the lock will be by manual means only. Also the use of the lock is restricted to motorized vessels only — kayaks and canoes will be required to use the portage. The lock will be operated only at such times that there are enough vessels to fill the lock — boats may expect delays up to one hour while awaiting the operation of the lock. Please plan accordingly. Raquette River: Rehabilitation work on the Raquette River Boat Launch, in the Town of Harrietstown, will begin this fall shortly after the Sept. 11-13 running of Adirondack Canoe Classic race. The boat launch, also known as “The Crusher,” will be closed for use throughout the fall. Work should be completed in spring 2010.

YOU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY CONTACT AN ATTORNEY OR YOUR LOCAL LEGAL AID OFFICE TO OBTAIN ADVICE ON HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The state encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877-BANKNYS (1-877-226-5697) or visit the department's website at WWW.BANKING.STATE.NY.US . FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to "save" your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner's distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. § 1303 NOTICE NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage company will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF (MORTGAGE COMPANY) AND FILING THE ANSWER WITH THE COURT. DATED: July 29, 2009 Steven J. Baum, P.C., Attorney(s) For Plaintiff(s), 220 Northpointe Parkway Suite G, Amherst, NY 14228 The law firm of Steven J. Baum, P.C. and the attorneys whom it employs are debt collectors who are attempting to collect a debt. Any information obtained by them will be used for that purpose. We’re building great markets for Northeast family dairy farms!
A
gri-Mark is owned and controlled by dairy farm families from New England and New York. Our farmers work together in the marketplace so they can receive the highest possible price for all of the milk their farm produces and the best legislative representation possible on dairy issues.
Agri-Mark farmers also own the McCadam brand of New York dairy products, and that investment is generating income for them as well. In 2007, McCadam won first place at the U.S. Cheese Championships in Wisconsin and the title “America’s Best Cheese!” Agri-mark had a record year of profits in 2007 and the future looks bright!
