Bus driver’s co-workers driven to help wife with lymphoma Rummage sale, bake sale for Theresa Viti in Peru this Saturday By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com SCHUYLER FALLS — Theresa M. Viti has been living with nonHodgkin’s lymphoma for more than a decade and is now pursuing her second bone marrow transplant to combat the disease. And, she’s not alone. Employees of the Peru Central School District transportation department have joined together to organize a benefit this Saturday, Oct. 24, for Theresa, a dental assistant in Plattsburgh who is the wife of bus driver David Viti. “We just thought we, the bus drivers and other people here at the trans-

portation department, would get together to help them out, and it just got bigger and bigger,” said Candy Hislop, one of the organizers of the benefit who works with David. “He’s always helping everybody else out and we just thought we’d help him and his family out for a change. We just want to help them with their expenses.” When David learned his co-workers wanted to lend a hand, he was taken back, he said. “I didn’t know what to say. I mean, we’ve always worked for everything we’ve got and we’ve never asked for anything,” said David, who admitted he and his family aren’t used to accepting help from others.

“We told him whether he liked it or not, we were doing it for them,” Candy said, laughing. Theresa has already undergone a bone marrow transplant and several rounds of chemotherapy in Plattsburgh and in Boston, Mass., said David. Theresa has seemed to become unresponsive to chemotherapy, he added leading her to search for another donor for what would be her second and final attempt at a bone marrow transplant. “This is the last step to hopefully do something for her,” he said. Despite facing such a serious situation, Theresa remains positive, David said.

Employees of the Peru Central School District transportation department are holding a fundraiser this Saturday, Oct. 24, in the gymnasium of St. Augustine's School in Peru. The event will benefit David and Theresa Viti of Schuyler Falls, pictured above. Photo submitted by David Viti

“She’s a strong-willed person,” said David. “That’s what’s kept her going all this time.” “I have to enjoy life and live each day to my best,” added Theresa. “I can’t change anything, so why get down because of it?”

SATURDAY October 24, 2009

Gordie Little’s new book features haunting tales ‘Ghosts of Clinton County’ published just in time for Halloween jeremiah@denpubs.com MORRISONVILLE — Gordon R. “Gordie” Little loves a good ghost story. He loves them so much, he’s compiled some of his favorites based on local phenomena in his first book, “Ghosts of Clinton County.” The 158-page paperback book, recently published by North Country Books, Utica, chronicles occurrences throughout the county and in places beyond such as Willsboro, Lake Placid, Crown Point and Saranac Lake. Many of the tales found in Little’s book come from stories he’s heard personally from people since his career in radio broadcasting more than 20 years ago. However, some come from experience Little himself has had. “I began writing ghost stories that happened in houses here in Morrisonville, including my own house, and it just branched out,” said Little. The home Little and his wife, Kaye, own on State Route 22B is the subject of his first chapter, “Ghosts in Our House.” The chapter

gives a background to the former owners of their house, including the April 1956 drowning of a young boy named Vincent Olsen who lived there at the time of his death. The story mentions strange happenings once the Littles purchased the home, including the eery sound of a woman sobbing, and televisions mysteriously changing channels by themselves. “It’s really an interesting read whether you believe in this sort of stuff or not,” said Little. Another mysterious tale is found in a chapter titled “Spirit Piano Teacher and Other Sarah Tales.” In that chapter, Little tells the story of the Sarah Alexander, a woman from Plattsburgh who grew up in Willsboro. Part of the story revolves around Alexander ’s childhood, in which she, her mother and her five siblings lived with her aunt Louise, whom they affectionately referred to as “Aunt Loueezy.” It was after the death of Alexander ’s aunt that the story unfolds. Aunt Louise loved to play the piano, the story reads, and after her

passing, Alexander became enamored with her aunt’s piano. Though her uncle Mike, Louise’s husband, no longer wished to hear the sounds of the piano and locked it following Louise’s death, Alexander found a way to unlock the piano and teach herself to play based on the memory of hearing her aunt years before. The strange phenomenon occurred, Little wrote, when Alexander and her family awoke to hear the piano playing in the middle of the night. They crept downstairs and were taken back by what they saw — or didn’t see. “They could hear the beautiful music and could see the keys move, but no one was seated on the piano stool. No hands could be seen flying over the keys,” Little wrote. “No one said it out loud, but they all knew that Aunt Lou-eezy had come back to serenade them.” Little has been interested in ghost stories since his childhood, he said, when he would read Grimm’s Fairy Tales and listen to ghoulish stories told by his mother. “My mother was the best storyteller in the world,”

Little recalled. “She would gather the neighborhood kids in our living room on Halloween night, sit down and make up these gruesome, frightening stories and then she’d have to walk them all home because they were afraid to go out by themselves.” The love for the unexplained instilled in Little by his mother has grown over the years, including a fascination with extrasensory perception (ESP), UFOs and even Bigfoot. “I’ve always been interested in what I call borderline subjects,” said Little. “And, writing these ghost stories just seemed to be a natural progression.” Does Little have any favorites out of the 32 tales found in his new book? “They’re all interesting in their own right,” said Little, adding most of the stories “aren’t frightening at all.” “Some of them, my wife said shouldn’t be called ‘ghost stories’ because their profoundly spiritual and moving,” he said. “Some of them involve partners that lived together and were married for many, many years, where one dies and

comes back or a beloved grandmother comes back. Those are the stories that are touching to me.” Though his book is complete, Little’s work on compiling spine-chilling and thought-provoking stories is not. “There are other stories I’ve written that I’m still developing,” said Little. “I have what I call ‘ghost notes’ all over the house. People will stop me on the street and say ‘Guess what happened to me,’ and I’ll write a

little note.” “If anybody has any tales for me, they need to get a hold of me,” he said with a laugh. “Ghosts of Clinton County” is currently available through North Country Books by calling 1-800-3427409. The book is expected to be carried by Corner-Stone Bookshop and Borders. Anyone with interesting tales is encouraged to contact Little via e-mail at gordandk@aol.com or by phone at 563-4108.

CVPH program wins national awards again PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Valley Heart Center at CVPH Medical Center has earned state and national recognition for the third consecutive year according to HealthGrades, the leading independent health care ratings organization in the nation. The CVPH Medical Center program has again received the HealthGrades Coronary Intervention Excellence Award and has been ranked in the top 5 percent in the nation for coronary interventional (angioplasty) procedures. Overall Cardiology Services have received a five-star rating for the second year in a row and HealthGrades has ranked the CVPH program in the top 10 in New York State for Overall Cardiac Services and for Cardiology Services and the top 5 in the state for Coronary Interventional Procedures.

“We are extremely proud to again have earned such recognition for our cardiac program,” said CVPH president and chief executive officer Stephens C. Mundy. “The physicians, Heart Center staff, and employees throughout the medical center who provide support have created an extremely valuable service that is literally saving lives of North Country residents. The HealthGrades findings prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that quality heart care is readily available close to home, right here in Plattsburgh.” The Champlain Valley Heart Center at CVPH expanded in 2005, providing angioplasty and openheart surgery. It later added electrophysiology services to offer a full continuum of heart care. While thanking all of those involved in the success of the CVPH

heart program, Mundy singled out Joel Wolkowicz, M.D., Medical Director of Cardiology, Tim Garrand, M.D., Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, Albert Abbott, Jr., M.D., who performs the majority of heart surgeries, Robin Flint, Cardiovascular Service Line Director, and Debra Donahue, Vice President of Planning and Professional Services for their efforts and oversight that have led to the continuing success of the program. “In 2002, CVPH recognized a need for expanded heart services. More than two years of planning and preparation went into the first procedures being done almost five years ago. It is testimony to the talented people who work here and to their commitment to excellence that this program is nationally recognized,” Mundy added.

HealthGrades independently and objectively rates the quality of care for nearly every hospital in the country. Their analyses are “risk adjusted,” meaning that hospitals taking sicker patients can be compared on equal footing with other hospitals. A five-star rating indicates that the hospital has belowaverage mortality or complication rates for that particular procedure or diagnosis. Three stars indicate the care is “as expected,” and one star indicates that the care reflects above-average mortality or complication rates. HealthGrades ratings are purely objective, based on information about patients” outcomes that hospitals report to federal and state governments. HealthGrades hospital ratings help consumers make well-informed decisions about their health care choices.

He is neutered and up-to date on vaccinations. Sweetness came to the shelter with her litter of puppies, who have already found forever homes. Now is her turn. Her name describes her very well. She is heartworm negative, is up-to-date with routine shots and is spayed.

onsumers are persistently bombarded with cell phone ads. The ads usually focus on the cost, rollover minutes, out of plan calling, network reliability or something similar. Anyone in the market for a cellular plan can collect details on the different plans and conclude which plan best fits their needs for cost and other benefits but how does someone gauge network/carrier reliability? Last spring, PC World teamed up with Novarum, an independent wireless consulting firm, to conduct performance testing of the nation’s three largest 3G carriers — Verizon, Sprint and AT&T. The team measured upload/download speeds and reliability of the three carriers from 20 fixed locations in 13 major U.S. cities. Reliability was loosely defined as service is available, had no interruptions and showed reasonable speed. In the end, more than 5,000 individual tests were run with PC World reporting the results in the September issue. Verizon reportedly earned the top spot in average download speeds at 951Kbps. Along with that, the network also showed very good reliability at 89.8 percent of the testing locations with the eastern and central part of the U.S. being slightly better than the western area of the country. Sprint had the highest reliability of the three networks clocking in at an impressive 90.5 percent reliability rating.

That substantiates the carrier ’s claim of “Most Dependable Network” and is due largely to the fact, of the three carriers, Sprint has the highest number of base stations on the ground. The third carrier, AT&T, had reasonable upload/ download speeds but took a serious hit in the reliability department. The network was reliable in only 68 percent of the testing locations, By Ron Poland which is reflected in the company’s recent activity to make significant improvements to its infrastructure and make the switch to a different 3G technology.

Couponing’s best-kept secrets: when less is more

T

his week’s Super-Couponing secret may surprise you because it goes against just about everything shoppers believe about saving money and shopping. Are you ready for a head-scratcher?

Smaller-size items are often a better value Yes, you read that right. Buying the smaller size of a product, with coupons, is often a better deal than buying a larger size of the same item. When I teach my coupon classes, this statement is almost always met with disbelief. I completely understand why, because it runs contrary to just about everything shoppers believe. To get the lowest price, we are conditioned to buy the largest size of something — the “family size” cereals, the “value-pack” of refills or just the largest package we can find. It does seem that you’ll need to buy that item less often if you buy a larger size — but you’re also likely to spend much more than you need to. When we have a fairly high-value coupon, applying it to the relatively lower price of a smaller-sized item will often result in a significantly lower per-ounce cost. I know this surprises many people. It surprised me, too, as I became a more experienced shopper. Over time, I noticed many of the items I was able to bring home for free or for pennies were usually in smaller-sized packages than their so-called “value” or larger counterparts. Adding to the confusion, the larger packages often tout in big, bold letters they are the better buy! A few examples will help you understand why this works. A certain brand of aluminum foil is on sale at my local store. The 70-square-foot box is $3.79 and the 20-square-foot box is 99 cents. With a coupon that states “$1 off any aluminum foil,” I have my choice as to which size box I’d like, the larger or the smaller. While my dollar coupon will, indeed, give me a discount on the larger box, the smaller box will be free. And I prefer free any day. The rule of thumb that it’s better to buy the smaller size especially holds true when we stack a store’s coupon and manufacturer ’s coupon. With the two coupons, we receive an even

larger discount on an item. For example, baby wipes are on sale at my store this week. The plastic tub contains 77 wipes and it’s on sale for $2.99. The “value-pack” of baby wipe refills contains 231 wipes and it’s on sale for $5.99. My store offers a $1.50 store coupon good on any size of the wipes. I also have a $1 manufacturer coupon for the wipes. Stacking these coupons gives me $2.50 in By Jill Cataldo savings on either size item. With the coupons, the plastic tub with 77 wipes will cost just 49 cents. The “value-pack” refill will cost me $3.49 using the same coupons. The “value-pack” contains three 77-count wipe packages; that works out to about $1.16 for each 77-wipe package. I’d spend more than twice as much on baby wipes if I purchased the larger, so-called “money-saving” size. An even easier example involves coupons for items that come in a trial or travel size. A $1 coupon good for any size deodorant will certainly give you a discount on a full-size deodorant. But a 99-cent travel size will be free using the coupon. Again, any time a coupon states it will work on any size of a product, remember trial and travel sizes are included. Free always makes better financial “cents” than spending more than we have to!

The perfect time to plant your garlic bulbs

I

f you are a vegetable gardener, this is typically the time of the year you are taking plants out of the garden, not planting. But, this weekend I plan on being out in the garden planting. Yes, you read correctly. Now is the time to plant on of my favorite crops — garlic. Garlic is an “allium,” which means it is in the same family as onions and leeks. Garlic is originally from Asia where it has been cultivated for thousands of years. Since garlic does not produce seed, it is propagated by planting individual garlic cloves from the bulb. And, planting garlic is pretty simple. First, purchase a hardneck variety, since these are better adapted to our colder climate than the softneck garlics. When shopping for garlic, avoid getting your garlic from the grocery store as most of these have been treated with a growth inhibitor to prevent sprouting during storage. To get the largest bulb possible, plant your garlic in the fall about two weeks after the first killing frost. Garlic likes to grow in loose soil, so cultivate the soil prior to planting. Plant each individual clove so that 2-3 inches of soil covers the base of the clove. Plant each clove a few inches apart and

in rows about six inches apart. After planting your garlic, mulch heavily with either 4-6 inches of straw or chopped leaves. This prevents damage from fluctuations in soil temperatures. Later, in the spring when the temperatures stop dropping dramatically at night, you can pull the mulch away from the bulbs and into the rows where it will suppress weeds. During the growing season make sure you plants do not dry out. Garlic has a shallow root system and is susceptible to drought. When the garlic sends up its flower stalk, or scape, cut it off and enjoy this once a season treat. They are great as a pesto, stir-fry, or grilled. When about half of the leaves are browned next June or July, dig up your garlic, allow it to dry, and enjoy! Market Basket prices continue their decline

S

eptember ’s Market Basket prices were down 1 percent for the month from $93.79 to $92.46 and down 4 percent from September 2008’s total of $96.14. This continues a downward trend since June. For the month, prices fell in almost all categories with dairy prices continuing at well below last year ’s levels. Canned goods and miscellaneous items rose slightly in price for the month and year. Produce prices continued to be lower for the year. Given the difficult growing season in 2009 it will be interesting to see the trends as we head into winter on fresh, frozen and canned produce prices. In the dairy category, all prices were down and the total for the category was down 17 percent from that of

September 2008. The lower prices received by dairy farmers is, of course, of local interest. A can of store brand diced tomatoes was the only item in the category to decrease for the year. Del Monte fruit cocktail, Green Giant peas, Starkist tuna and store brand vegetable soup in beef broth were all more expensive. Prices for the month were virtually unchanged. Demand for canned goods tends to be greater in the colder months. In the meat cases, whole frying chickens continue to

be more costly than last year, but sirloin steak and bottom round roast remained thrifty choices. Drink prices were stable with the exception of tea bags, which declined for the month and year. In the miscellaneous category, both Oreo cookies and vegetable oil prices had little change for the year.

supply and a good source of beta carotene (Vitamin A). The rainy summer benefited the local apple harvest as quality of fruit is excellent this fall. The Market Basket Report is a bi-monthly survey of 41 food items commonly purchased by consumers. Three major supermarkets are surveyed in the Plattsburgh area and the resulting report produced. The report is a community service sponsored by the Technical Assistance Center at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

Local United Way consolidating to include Franklin County chapter How easy it is to give to the United Way Give. Advocate. Volunteer. Live United. This is the theme for this year's 2010 United Way of Clinton & Essex Counties campaign. The goal is $700,000. The primary strategy is employee campaigns for all the employers throughout the region. The easiest way to give is through payroll deduction — employees sign up for an equal amount of money, say $5, $10, or even $2, to be deducted from each paycheck they receive in 2010. If you are an employer and haven't participated in the campaign, call the United Way office at 563-0028 and ask for pledge materials. Consider a corporate gift. If you are an employee, please give to the United Way through your workplace campaign. All the money raised stays local — every cent of it. It feels good to give. Right now, there are 33 partner agencies, all of whom are not-for-profit organizations governed by a board of directors. These fine organizations are working very hard to make the lives of families and individuals better with funding they receive from United Way. For more information about the United Way and the 2010 campaign, go to www.unitedwayce.org. Remember: Give Advocate. Volunteer. Live United. Jamie L. PLATTSBURGH — The United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties Inc. has announced it will begin serving Franklin County. The announcement was made in a press release from the nonprofit organization Oct. 19. “This change will give our United Way a regional scope, which we think makes a lot of sense for our friends and neighbors throughout the North Country,” stated the organization’s executive director, John C. Bernardi. In September, United Way Worldwide requested the United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties include Franklin County in its service area, a request which the board of directors ultimately decided to honor. Karen Carre, board president of the former United Way of Franklin County, is supportive of the change. “The people in Franklin County are very generous and a regional approach to the United Way system will be more sustainable,” stated Carre. “Our organization will undergo a corporate name change and reemerge as ‘The Good Neighbor,’ allowing for the continuation of collaborative efforts to improve the quality of life in our region. We anticipate working closely with United Way and other programs and organizations across the North Country.” Officials and volunteers from the United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties are currently developing strategies to expand into Franklin County and to bring the three counties together through a United Way network of programs, services and partnerships. Bernardi said the North Country 2-1-1 information

and referral system is an excellent example of this and his steering committee is comprised of representatives from throughout the region. “Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties make up a natural region and we are connected in so many ways as friends, neighbors and partners,” he stated. “Our United Way will continue to be a great vehicle for bringing people together for the overall benefit of the North Country community.” United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties has 33 partner agencies including several that already serve Franklin County. The health and human service organizations receive United Way funding to provide specific services based on community needs and their ability to achieve effective outcomes. The organization also coordinates a wide variety of programs including, 2-1-1 Information and Referral, Earned Income Tax Credit, Gifts in Kind and Disaster Preparedness. Last year, the organization raised more than $700,000 dollars during its annual campaign. “To be able to raise that much money during difficult economic times is a testament to the generous and caring nature of the people in the North Country,” said Sue LeBlanc, current board president of the United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties. United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties will modify its name to reflect the addition of Franklin County and is also exploring additional office presence to facilitate a regional approach to services and programs in all three counties.

College students to participate in ‘Make-A-Difference Day’ Saturday PLATTSBURGH — Students from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh will take to the streets of Plattsburgh this Saturday, Oct. 24, in recognition of National Make-A-Difference Day. The projects scheduled for that day range from painting and repairing the porch of an elderly cancer survivor to setting up and staffing the haunted house at the City Recreation Department’s Paranormal Expo, the proceeds from which will be donated to the Plattsburgh Interfaith Food Shelf. That night, a special free community meal will conclude the day’s activities at the college’s Algonquin Dining Hall on Rugar Street. she said. “Everything raised has helped to keep our shelter open for all the animals depending on us to give them a second chance.” Though Elmore SPCA is seeing progress, the shelter ’s financial troubles are far from over, Solari-Ruscoe said. “We are still struggling financially as it costs approximately $12,000 a month to keep the shelter open,” she said. “This is a huge challenge for a rural shelter to meet every single month, especially in difficult economic times.” Regardless of the financial climate, Elmore SPCA needs to pay for insurances and utilities while providing shelter and proper care for homeless animals and maintaining suf-

Increased community support credited for helping bring animal shelter out of red PERU — Things are beginning to look up for Elmore SPCA, the organization which provides welfare services to animals from throughout the North Country. According to the most recent edition of Elmore News, the seasonal newsletter printed by the nonprofit organization, the past year has seen a dramatic outpouring of support from people across the North Country. Last October, the animal shelter was facing potential closure due to operating at a substantial loss, which was attributed to fewer donations and increased costs in day-to-day expenses. Carol M. Solari-Ruscoe, secretary of the Elmore SPCA board of directors, said as the organization nears the end of its fiscal year, the shelter is “on a better financial footing than this time last year.” “As soon as people were aware of our financial situation earlier this year, they stepped up from all walks of life to try to help; adults and children alike,” said SolariRuscoe. “Based on the encouraging responses from people, it is very clear that they want to see the Elmore SPCA remain open.” Easter basket raffles, perennial plant sales, bake sales, school fundraisers and even Girl Scout food drives are among the fundraisers held to benefit the shelter, said SolariRuscoe. “It has been so amazing,”

Community center named after Gordon Hazel Hazel’s leadership credited for helping White Pines Commons project success By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com

PLATTSBURGH — The nonprofit organization which oversaw the development of White Pine Commons has paid tribute to its past executive director, Gordon J. Hazel. The Joint Council for Economic Opportunity of Clinton and Franklin Counties officially named the 32-unit housing development’s community center in honor of Hazel during a ceremony Oct. 15. The ceremony, attended by local and state dignitaries and by Hazel’s friends and family, included several words of praise for Hazel’s involvement with the Military Turnpike development. JCEO’s current executive director, Bruce E. Garcia, said creating more affordable family housing was one of the most important focuses in 18 years at the helm of the organization. “Without his vision and his dedication to the cause, White Pine Commons would

have never been realized,” said Garcia. The project was in the works since 2005, when JCEO conducted a market study which showed a need for housing. JCEO submitted an application for state funding, which wasn’t approved, though the study was revised in 2006, showing the same need and was finally approved. Garcia credited Hazel’s commitment to seeing the project through that led to its completion in August 2008. It was that same commitment that Hazel was credited for bringing JCEO from an organization with an annual operating budget of $885,000 and 56 employees to one with a budget in excess of $7 million that employs 170 people. “Also, JCEO has gone from serving less than 5,000 families per year to serving more than 25,000 families,” said Garcia. “Obviously, Gordon’s accomplishments at JCEO have been numerous and significant.” Steven W. Frederick, president of the JCEO board of di-

rectors, agreed. “Gordon, you have not only inspired the board of directors at JCEO, I’ve said this time and time again, you’ve inspired boards of directors and other executive directors of other nonprofits all over the North Country,” said Frederick. When the plaque inside the community center was unveiled, Hazel was overcome with emotion as he thanked the crowd. “As you all know, someone has to be a leader, but there also has to be a team. And, all this got accomplished with a great deal of people working on it in addition to me,” said Hazel. “The beautiful housing you see here today is the result of the tremendous vision and dedication of our JCEO board of directors.” “What you see here today in this development is a monument to that vision and leadership, I’m so proud to be a part of it,” he added. “And, now, to have my name attached to it, is just an unimaginable honor to me.”

Safety Rules for Hunters Most hunting related incidents involve members of the same hunting party. Virtually all such shootings are preventable through safe gun handling and careful shooting. Each hunter can help other hunters avoid mistakes by wearing hunter orange, carefully planning each hunt, and insisting that all members of the hunting party follow the following five simple safety rules: • Assume every gun is loaded, and unload guns when not in use. • Control the muzzle, and keep it pointed in a safe direction. • Keep your trigger finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. • Be sure of your target and beyond. • Wear hunter orange. “Following the five simple safety rules will prevent all hunting related shooting incidents. Every hunter learns these rules when they take the safety course required for all new hunters,” Commissioner Crotty said.” As a graduate of New York State’s Sportsman Education Course, I appreciate the efforts of over 3,000 dedicated DEC volunteers who teach it. Thanks to them, we now have a very safety conscious generation of hunters.”

MORE TIPS FOR HUNTERS: TAKE CARE EVEN WHEN NOT SHOOTING: In recent years, nearly half of deer hunting-related shooting incidents resulted from unintentional discharges, that is, when people were not shooting. DEC safety experts urge hunters to practice constant muzzle control, keeping the safety on at all times and fingers outside the trigger guard while carrying firearms. Wear hunter orange clothing so that other hunters can spot you - Wearing Hunter Orange Saves Lives: The effectiveness of fluorescent or blaze orange safety clothing speaks for itself. About 80 percent of big game hunters in New York State put the odds in their favor by wearing orange. Over the past 10 years, 15 New York State big game hunters have been mistaken for deer and killed, and every one of those victims was from the small minority of hunters who did not wear hunter orange. A 16 year old hunter who did not wear hunter orange also was killed in the line of fire when another hunter shot a deer. Even though hunter orange is highly visible to humans, studies show that deer are not alarmed by it. Friendly Reminders Can Save Lives Hunters who see a partner’s finger inside the trigger guard when he or she is not shooting or a barrel momentarily swinging in an unsafe direction owe it to themselves and their companions to remind them or proper safety rules.

PLATTSBURGH — The State University of New York a Plattsburgh’s Department of Theatre will perform a production of Moliere’s “Tartuffe” beginning Thursday, Nov. 5. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Hartman Theatre, located in the Myers Fine Arts Building. Dr. John Shout, professor of Theater and English, will direct the comedy about religious hypocrisy, seduction and greed. According to Shout, the play remains as relevant today as when it was first written almost 350 years ago. “’Tartuffe’ is one of the most frequently performed plays in the long canon of theater history,” explained Shout. “Precisely because the things they found funny in the 17th century, we still find funny today.” “Tartuffe” is the story of a conman, who plots and schemes his way into the household of a rich fool by presenting himself as a holy man. Not everyone is convinced, however, and the fun begins as Tartuffe sets out to steal the man’s women and family fortune. The play was first performed in 1664 for King Louis XIV. Although well received by audiences, it was quickly banned because of objections from influential church leaders. The production will feature performances by 11 students and the efforts of many students, alumni, faculty and staff behind the scenes. Performances will continue at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Angell College Center desk and at the door.

States considers ban on use of deer urine in lures I stopped by Adirondack Outfitters in Lewis today to stock up on a couple essentials for the Oct. 17 muzzlestuffer opener and Steve Koop mentioned some states, including Vermont, are considering banning the use of deer urine in hunting lures. We both found this hard to believe. The hunting lure industry is a multi-milliondollar business and the use of urine as a masking scent and an attractant for bucks is extremely popular. But, I did a little research and it turns out a ban may indeed become reality. That’s because biologists are concerned the commercially-available urine, which comes from captive deer held in pens, could spread chronic wasting disease, or CWD. CWD is an always fatal disease of the nervous system which has been identified in deer in 15 states — including New York — and two Canadian provinces. The disease is spread from one deer to another through saliva and other bodily fluids, along with food that has grown in CWD-contaminated soil. The proteins that carry CWD are excreted in both feces and urine, and

once they reach the soil, become 700 times more infectious. First identified in Colorado in 1967, CWD has been found in Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, South Dakota, Montana, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Utah, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Wyoming and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. CWD was first identified in New York in 2005 in the captive deer herd in central New York. After that, several regulations were put in place to help control its spread, included a feeding ban — and a containment area was created in Oneida and Madison counties. Since that time, two cases of CWD have been identified in the wild deer herd in the containment area, but biologists are optimistic because the disease has not yet spread statewide. In the meantime, wildlife officials in neighboring states are keeping a wary eye on CWD, knowing it can have potentially devastating impacts to deer numbers. Last week, biologists of the Pennsylvania Game Commission urged state officials to consider a ban on deer urine and products

with the hunt and concentrate, it will dramatically improve your odds of getting a shot; rather than watching a flag running off in the distance.” Gun-slings have saved many a deer's life. Hunt with the gun in your hands, not over your shoulder. Keep a sling in your pack for use only when you are dragging a deer out. Don’t expect to see a whole deer, it is very rare you will. Since you don’t often get a full view of a deer, learn to identify an ear, nose or the flicker of a tail. Squat or get down on your knees to look for deer on their level and learn to view through the woods in three dimensions. Stop to look for movement in the woods; you can't pick up movement if you are moving.

Lures that use deer urine such as the one above marketed by Hunter’s Specialties and the one below marketed by Wildlife Research Center could be banned in some states because of a concern that the product could spread the debilitating deer disease known as CWD. The ban could have a severe impact on the mulit-million-dollar lure industry.

such chickadees which will voice their agitation at intruders, while other songbirds will voice a “spishing” or “pish, pish, pish” alarm cry. Birds may not sound an alarm exclusively due to an approaching deer. Often an alarm warns of predators such as a hawk, owl, fox, fisher or coyote. However, the more aware a hunter is of the movement of all woodland creatures; the better he will become at recognizing deer. Pay attention all the time and stay on the hunt until the moment you exit the woods. Often hunters are unprepared for a shot as they enter or exit the woods. Don’t rush to get back to the vehicle or to camp, that's what a flashlight is used for. Take it slow, stay

hen hunting whitetail deer, be aware of other woodland inhabitants which may provide important clues of a deer ’s whereabouts. Many birds and animals sound an alarm when their territory is encroached upon. Take note of obvious sounds that should alert a hunter such as the steady, scolding chatter of a red squirrel or the “chip, chip, chip” of a chipmunk warning of an intruder in it’s territory. Birds also provide indication of the presence of an intruder with alarm calls such as the “awk, awk” of the raven or the “jay, jay” of a blue jay. A grouse flushing can provide another indication of other woodland travelers as can smaller birds

that use it in an effort to keep CWD out of the state. Walt Cottrell, wildlife veterinarian for the Pennsylvania Game Commission, said Saskatchewan has already banned urine lures and nine states are considering it — including Vermont and New Hampshire. While Cottrell said he could not give the likelihood the disease will spread by the use of the lures, he said a ban would be better than doing nothing. “CWD is forever,” he said. “If you get it, you're going to have it forever.” Pennsylvania Game Commissioner Tom Boop asked if there was a way the marketers of deer urine could somehow certify a product as being CWD-free. But, Cottrell said it is currently not possible because there is no live-animal test for the disease and it can take up to 18 months for a deer to show signs of being sick. “It seems, at the least, that we should put out a news release making hunters aware of the potential,” Boop said, referring to the spread of CWD. “I'm just thinking a lot of people have never even thought about this.”

Soldiers receive new rank, new responsibilities

SATURDAY October 24, 2009

Sworn in

LATHAM — Maj. Gen. Joseph J. Taluto, Adjutant General for the State of New York, has announced the promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capabilities for additional responsibility and leadership. The promotions include Dustin Hill, Plattsburgh, serving with Company B, 2108th Infantry is promoted to the rank of specialist; James Whitworth, also of Plattsburgh, serving with Company B, 2-108th Infantry is promoted to the rank of sergeant; and Brandon Powers, Altona, serving with 1427th Transportation Company Medium Truck, promoted to the rank of specialist. Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability, and development potential. These promotions additionally recognize the best qualified soldiers and attract and retain the highest caliber citizen soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard.

United States Magistrate Judge Larry Kudrle, left, swore in attorney Heather Maure as a member of the bar for the U.S. District Court Sept. 16 in his Plattsburgh chambers. Maure recently moved to Plattsburgh from Rochester, where she had been Monroe County Assistant Public Defender for six years. Maure will be working for the Law Office of Mark Schneider. Besides her expertise in criminal law, she will be representing clients in Social Security and bankruptcy cases. Photo submitted by Mark Schneider

Bowl-A-Thon From page 1 pendently to raise money for the MDA. “They’ve been doing it down in the Troy area for about three or four years and it’s actually gotten pretty big,” said Jackson. “The union rep down there has to have two bowl-athons back to back because there are so many people.” Jackson said he hopes to grow the event at North Bowl Lanes to that much of a success. Already, interest is growing. “We’re soliciting gifts to raffle and we’ve already got about 30 to 35 items,” said Jackson. “We’ve got things like a $25 gift certificate to Koto, car washes, a month free at the YMCA.” Though Jackson is still collecting items to raffle, the most important part of his job in coordinating the bowl-a-thon is getting the word out about the event. “We just want to get people out to bowl,” he said. The Nov. 1 bowl-a-thon will be held from 1-3 p.m., and cost $15 to register per person.

The cost of registration, which Jackson stressed will stay locally to help the MDA, will give participants a chance to bowl two to three games. Participants will be put in groups of five bowlers per lane. Free pizza and soda will be provided as well as one free raffle ticket. Additional tickets will be available for purchase. Though Jackson said he’d like people to sign up in advance, those showing up the day of the event won’t be turned away. “The sooner we can know the better, but if people can show up a half-hour before, then we can get them signed up right there,” he said. Those paying for registration for the bowl-a-thon may bring checks payable to the MDA and those unable to attend the event may still send checks in care of the MDA to Jackson at 10 Miller St., Plattsburgh N.Y. 12901. For more information, contact Jackson at 572-4616.

Benefit From page 1 Her husband, three daughters, two grandsons and granddaughter are especially what keep her going, she said. I try to stay strong for them. I’m not going to give up,” said Theresa. This Saturday’s benefit, which will consist of a rummage sale, bake sale and raffles, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the gymnasium of St. Augustine’s School, 3035 Main St., Peru. Word of the fundraiser has already started to spread, said Candy. “The community has been really helpful giving us things for the raffles,” said Candy. “We’ve got something like 30 items donated

from local businesses. And, we’re going to have all kinds of pies, homemade bread, brownies, cheesecakes. Whatever you can think of. So, hopefully we’ll do okay.
