Hoping for a million Hannah’s Hope Fund aims to raise $500,000 by February to be matched by philanthropist By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com REXFORD — Lori and Matt Sames have been searching for a way to eradicate a rare neurological disorder known as giant axonal neuropathy since their daughter, Hannah, was diagnosed with the condition three years ago. Now, it appears efforts to raise necessary funding to research GAN have taken a huge step forward. Hannah’s Hope Fund has been awarded a $500,000 matching grant from the Sunshine Lady Foundation, a private family foundation established by philanthropist Doris Buffett, sister of billionaire Warren Buffett. The connection between Hannah’s Hope Fund and the Sunshine Lady Foundation was made by an 84-year-old woman from Niskayuna in Schenectady County who learned of Hannah’s condition through local news coverage, said Hannah’s aunt, Carrie Favaro of Saranac, who has been helping oversee
fundraising efforts in the North Country. The woman contacted the Sunshine Lady Foundation and made the foundation aware of Hannah’s Hope Fund. Not long after, Sames said she was contacted by the foundation about how they could help Hannah’s Hope Fund. “Oh my goodness, I was just amazed,” said Sames, who, along with her husband, is originally from the Plattsburgh area. “I was breathless.” “It’s just amazing,” said Favaro. “It was serendipity, I guess.” A representative from the foundation outlined the terms of the matching grant — also referred to as a challenge grant — noting the foundation would match up to $500,000 dollar for dollar raised between Aug. 15, 2009, and Feb. 15, 2010. “At first, I thought they meant 2011,” said Sames, “but they said that it was actually 2010. The reason is because See MILLION, page 11

Groundbreaking Monday at Tom Miller Road site By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com
Morrisonville Elementary School hosted a “Spooky Family Reading Night” Oct. 30, inviting students and their parents to hear haunting tales from school staff members. Several in attendance showed up in costume, including greeters like the ones shown here, dressed as characters from The Wizard of Oz. Morrisonville's own “Wicked Witch,” Cathy Defayette, served as master of ceremonies for the evening. Presenters include The Cowardly Lion (principal Brad Ott), The Scarecrow (art teacher Jerry Girard), and The Wizard (physical education teacher Ryan LaTulip). The readings were followed by a costume parade. The evening also included a “witch’s brew” and “ghostly treats” served by student volunteers from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. More photos from the event may be found on page 12. Photos submitted by Shawna Dutko
PLATTSBURGH — Hospice of the North Country will soon have a new home for its administrative offices in Plattsburgh. The nonprofit organization will break ground for a new facility on Tom Miller Road this Monday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. Executive director Kent W. Brooks said the organization began examining the move in May, searching for real estate to purchase, lease or rent. “We really couldn’t find one to suit our needs,” said Brooks. However, the organization eventually crossed paths with Donald M. and Suzanne B. Kasprzak, who were willing to sell property they own on Tom Miller Road to Hospice for half of mar-
ket value. “That was a great start,” said Brooks, who signed closing papers for the property Nov. 3. Since then, Hospice hasn’t had to pay any associated costs with preparing the site. Legal fees, engineering fees, architectural fees — all have been donated by the respective firms to help Hospice keep the cost of the move as low as possible, said Brooks, who estimated the overall donation of services somewhere between See GROUNDBREAKING, page 11

Local church celebrates decade of helping Operation Christmas Child Shoe boxes of donations being collected to help children overseas By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The First Assembly of God has been helping less fortunate children overseas for the past 10 years, and it’s a tradition that continues. Since 1999, the Prospect Avenue church has been collecting shoe boxes full of school supplies, hygiene products and toys for needy children as part of Operation Christmas Child. The project is a philanthropic effort overseen by Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief organization, explained Rita D. Alford, coordinator for the local church’s collection center. The First Assembly of God first became involved as a relay center, receiving donations from people in the area. The donations were then sent on to a collection center in Albany, where they were then packed and transported to the headquarters of Samaritan’s Purse in Boone, N.C. The boxes were then sent to destinations

the emphasis on collecting doesn’t officially start for another week, shoe boxes and other donations are already being accepted, said Alford, who added making a donation is “very easy.” Donors may take an empty shoe box or small plastic container and fill it with gifts for a girl or boy child. The boxes will be organized by age category — 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 — and by gender before being distributed. Alford, who traveled to the Dominican Republic with Operation Christmas Child last February, said seemingly trivial items like pens and pencils, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and toy cars and dolls can mean the world to a child in need. “These shoe boxes are precious to them. It’s hard for us to believe, because we have so much,” said Alford. “But, when someone across the world that doesn’t know them would pack such a box, with such treasures for them, it just gives them hope.”

Lyon Mountain fire department receives $5,000 Georgia-Pacific grant fighters,” said Lyon Mountain Fire Chief Bill Durnin Jr. “When firefighters respond to a call, the first thing I think about is their safety and if they have the right equipment to perform the job. The grant money we received from GP will be used to replace outdated turn-out gear that our department has been trying to replace for many years.” According to the National Volunteer Fire Council, the majority of the fire departments in the U.S. are either run by volunteers or are mostly comprised of volunteers working beside career firefighters. These departments also are the primary providers of emergency and rescue services in their area. “We appreciate the work that volunteer and small town fire departments do in our facility communities all across this country,” said GeorgiaPacific president and chief executive officer Jim Hannan. “Because many of our employees also serve as volunteer firefighters, we understand the demands on these units and their need for equipment and financial support. The Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade program allows us to show our appreciation for the essential services they provide.”

K9 unit receives a helping hand from fellow rescuers KEESEVILLE — The Champlain Valley Search and Rescue K9 Unit recently traveled to Saratoga County for Galway Volunteer Fire Department’s Safety Day where they met with representatives of NorthEast Mobile Search and Rescue, based in Clifton Park. NEMSAR vice president and K9 handler Kathy Barton presented a $200 donation from their group to Champlain Valley Search and Rescue co-founder Shannon Bresett. The donation was for Oakland, a dog from the Keeseville unit which Bresett handles. The 2-year-old German Shepherd was severely injured in a training exercise and is now undergoing extensive surgeries to repair the damage. “We are deeply touched by the outpouring of support for Oakland … This act of goodwill shows that while there may be many search groups throughout New York State that we have that sense of family and that many of us will come to a call of arms to help a fallen comrade,” said Bresett. Oakland was scheduled to undergo further surgeries in late October, and, if all goes well, is expected to make a full recovery and be back to climbing the Adirondack High Peaks by next spring. Donations are still being accepted for Oakland’s medical expenses and may be sent in care of the Champlain Valley Search and Rescue K9 Unit to 27 Beach St., Keeseville N.Y. 12944. Donations are tax-deductible. For more information, contact the unit at 314-6756 or visit their Web site at www.champlainvalleyk9unit.com.

LYON MOUNTAIN — The Lyon Mountain Volunteer Fire Department is a recipient of a 2009 Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade grant. Chosen out of more than 100 firefighting units in Georgia-Pacific facility communities in 28 states, the fire department will receive $5,000 to purchase new firefighter gear ensembles. “The Plattsburgh facility was very pleased to see one of our local fire departments selected as a grant recipient,” said Georgia-Pacific’s Plattsburgh facility manager Kirk A. Stallsmith. “During tough economic conditions, this $5,000 grant is great news for the Lyon Mountain fire department, and we are proud to recognize them with this grant.” The Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade is a national program that recognizes the contributions of fire departments in communities with Georgia-Pacific facilities. Launched in 2006, the initiative has contributed approximately $500,000 to rural and small town fire units across the U.S. The program supports firefighters with product and cash donations for programming and purchasing necessary equipment, and safety education materials for presentations in local schools. “I want to thank GP for what they do to support local volunteer fire-

cross the region this fall, high school students are visiting college campuses as they work toward the transition from high school student to college student. Making the trek to the preferred campus in order to see everything first hand helps the decision making process. Picking a college is an easy choice for some as they plan to attend the school a parent attended or the school with the desired degree program. For others, it’s a harder choice and they spend time weighing many factors. One factor is the end result that answers the basic question of “what can I do with this degree?” The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the well-known Occupational Outlook Handbook. A section of the handbook called “Tomorrow’s Jobs,” examines projected employment change. From the occupational perspective, the handbook states “Almost three-quarters of the job growth will come from three groups of professional occupations — computer and mathematical occupations, healthcare practitioners and technical occupations…” For more information, visit www.bls.gov/oco/oco2003.htm. To that end, I want to invite all students interested in a technology-related career, and those who are unsure about their post-high school step, to attend the second annual fall Clinton Community College Technology Open House. Attending the open house allows the chance to tour technology classrooms and gain information on the college’s de-

ne of the most difficult aspects of the caregiving process is getting organized. Addressing the immediate needs of the person in your care often becomes the top priority, and getting records and documents organized and orderly can be postponed for a more convenient time. Unfortunately, a “more convenient time” rarely comes! Here are some suggestions for getting the process started: • Keep up-to-date records of medications, and any sideeffects. Note what works and what doesn’t. • Keep records of all doctor appointments, including the reason for the visit, the physician’s response, and any procedures performed. • Maintain a file of copies of all medical records, for yourself and the person in your care. This will be helpful in the event of a problem with medications, etc., and will provide a history of medical interventions. • Speak with members of the caregiving family about funeral wishes, and listen to everyone’s input. • Fill out an Advanced Directive and give it to physicians and involved relatives. • Have a will completed or have the existing will updated. Without a signed will, the courts will determine distribution of assets. You may also want to establish a Power of Attorney. • Keep a record of where important documents are stored.
This will make things easier in the event of an emergency or tragedy. • Record all financial transactions: investments; retirements income; repairs or major purchases for the home; creditors; and assets. • Have an insurance analysis conducted: Is your current coverage adequate for your needs? Do you have provisions for long-term care? What about respite? • Inspect your medicine cabinet. Check the expiration dates on medications, and check with your physician about disposing of any outdated medicines. For more information, contact the Caregiver Resource Center at Behavioral Health Services North at 565-4543 or 565-4625.

Reader mail: Organizing coupons more efficiently
T
his week, I’m happy to answer another question from a reader like you who is learning to Super-Coupon: Q: “In reading your column, I’ve not seen how to organize my coupons. In one of your early columns, you suggested keeping the entire booklet of coupons together. So I do. But then when I’m shopping I don’t know what I have. If we don’t clip the coupons out and categorize them, how do we know what we have on hand?” A: Thankfully, using coupons is easier than it’s ever been. Much of that is due to the method that I use, which I call a “clipless” system because you clip less! I only cut the coupons I need for each week’s trip. All of the other coupons stay in the insert, where they are easy to find when I’m planning my next shopping trip. In the past, in order to match coupons to sales, people would cut absolutely every coupon they received in their newspaper inserts and carry them all around, usually in a big binder or box. This method, though, is the reason many people give up on using coupons. It’s incredibly time-consuming and tedious. Most of us want to save money without investing hours in cutting and sorting little pieces of paper each week. Here’s how I organize and use my coupons. When my coupons arrive in the newspaper each week, I take all of the inserts and write the date on the front. Then, I store them in an expandable file. These are inexpensive and can be found at any department or office-supply store. I use one pocket for each month and a typical accordion file can hold six months’ worth of coupons or more. When I’m ready to plan my shopping trips and cut the
coupons I’ll need, I head to the Internet. There are many coupon Web sites that help you match coupons to sales. On my Web site, www.supercouponing.com, I’ve got a free coupon lookup utility that’s very easy to use! You type either the name of the product you’d like to find coupons for (such as “Kellogg’s”) or a general category of product (“dog food,” for example) and the coupon lookup returns a list of all of the coupons currently in your inserts along with the values, purchase requirements and expiration dates. This database also delivers information about exactly where to find your By Jill Cataldo coupon. When your inserts arrive, perhaps you’ve noticed each one has a name at the top, such as Procter & Gamble or SmartSource. The database will tell you the name and date of the insert that contains the coupon you’re looking for. At that point, you simply pull that insert out of your file, cut the coupon you need and return the insert to the file for use another day. This is a quick, easy system to use. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can plan your shopping trips with it. On an average trip, you might use 10 to 15 coupons. Wouldn’t you rather just cut those few rather than the 40 or more that arrive in the inserts each week? Using the “clipless” method, you’re only cutting what you need — and if you don’t need a coupon, you’re not spending time or energy cutting it out or carrying it around. © CTW Features

CLINTON TODAY - 5
Mayor outlines several items in the works T
he month of October has come and gone and now the winter months will be upon us soon. With this change brings a host of issues the city must deal with. Picking up leaves, ordering salt and sand for snow storms, and getting our winter equipment ready are just a few of those issues. I attended several events throughout the month. The opening of the Welcome Center for CV Tech Literacy on the U.S. Oval was well attended. This new center will be helpful in assisting individuals in many ways which is a much needed addition to the community. The annual Domestic Violence Event was held at CVPH. Each year, awareness of this issue increases and the people involved with providing services to individuals affected with domestic violence are very special indeed. I had the pleasure of hosting 20 German students in city hall as part of an exchange program with Plattsburgh High School. The students asked me excellent questions. I was very impressed with their knowledge of our political issues. I had the pleasure to speak at the Realtors Breakfast updating everyone on development projects throughout the city. The Plattsburgh College Suites project on the old St. John’s property is almost completely finished. The Catherine Gardens project on the Seton Catholic property is about to commence and Walgreens is to open very soon. The City of Plattsburgh received a $4.7 million grant and loan from the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation to assist us with the closing of the Akey Landfill Project. Without this funding, our taxpayers would have seen a tremendous long term debt load for 20-30 years. I am truly grateful for the assistance of Gov. Paterson, EFC pres-
ident Matt Millea, and DEC officials. We held eight interviews for the Deputy Chamberlain position. Each individual interviewed was extremely qualified. We hope to make a decision very soon. The 2010 Mayoral Budget Public Hearing was held as is a requirement of our City Charter. As most people understand, this budget was very challenging due to the many financial issues facing the city, state, and country. Difficult decisions were made and the final budget will be voted on by the Common Council by the second week in January. As usual, my office deals with constituent calls and problems each day. Most are legitimate but some are also quite humorous in many ways. As mayor, nothing surprises me anymore but we continue to do our best to assist as many residents as we can. I often tell constituents I cannot perform miracles but will try to help in any way I can. Let’s hope November begins with good weather as winter in the North Country is quite long for all of us! See you soon! Donald Kasprzak is the mayor of the city of Plattsburgh. His column appears regularly in the Clinton County Free Trader Today.
Plattsburgh still envy of other municipalities
A
traditional fall activity at the town is to prepare a budget for the coming year. Our budget officer has worked hard to review the previous year ’s needs, budget trends and organize a working draft. Departments have considered their needs and goals as they submit their individual budgets for our review and approval. This past year, the town has also felt the impact of the economic downturn. Though we have forged forward and many new jobs have been created there have also been closures. Our local economy has not felt the same impact as others but we have not been spared. I commend our department heads for accepting the challenge to hold the line and bring to the board budget requests that are considerate of the times. As of this date, less ambulance and fire department budgets, the town’s tentative budget has grown only about 1.5 percent over 2009. This includes contractual obligations, salaries, and increases in insurance and retirement. Unfortunately, our revenue side of the budget has been impacted as well. The end of PILOT payments and lower sales tax revenue created a gap that needs to be filled. A municipality has many responsibilities and basic services that must be provided. The expression, “There is no such thing as a free lunch!” can have many interpretations but mostly it reminds us there is a cost for most everything we
do and have. Still, we will continue to be the envy of many other municipalities when comparing our cost of government to the services provided. It has been another month of many meetings, special events, communications, budget activity, drafting new resolutions, proposing policies, developing local ordinances, day to day management, etc. and soon we start all over again as Jan. 1, 2010, brings a new year and new challenges. I will continue to monitor the decisions of our legislators in Albany and Washington while working locally to bring new jobs and economic opportunity to our town. A growing community is a healthy community and, as town supervisor, I plan to continue the progress! Bernie Bassett is the supervisor of the town of Plattsburgh. Did you know you can nosh on squash leaves?
W
hile at a recent conference, I was handed a set of cards recently released by Pride of New York promoting certain vegetables. The front of the cards all had a photo of a fruit or vegetable with a saying such as ‘Nosh on Squash.’ The back of each card contained information about that fruit or vegetable. The one vegetable that caught my eye was indeed the squash. And, the interesting fact that caught my eye was not the slogan, but the fact the card claimed you can eat squash leaves. Never doubting Pride of New York would place false information on their cards, I all the same researched this notion. And, sure enough, tender squash leaves and tendrils. I found many ideas for stir-frying the leaves and tendrils. Next summer, I will have to try this idea. The idea of using the squash leaves excites me — one because I like to try new foods, but also because I like to be resourceful and use garden space wisely. Winter squash is a warm-season vegetable, which means it requires warm soils and warm days to thrive. The first frost withers the leaves and vines of this tender plant. If you have never grown winter squash, you may find this odd since we eat the squash during the fall and winter. Unlike summer squash that we harvest young and
eat before it is fully ripened, winter squash we harvest and eat when it is fully developed and ripe. We must grow the plant all summer long before we can harvest the bounty. In addition to having a long growing season, winter squash requires quite a bit of room. The plant is a vine that rambles quite a distance. Even the bush varieties still require quite a bit of garden space. So, in the end, you have a plant that takes a lot of growing time and space. But, every year I still plant winter squash. It is highly nutritious, stores easily, and tastes great. Now knowing I can get an additional harvest out of this already great vegetable makes me excited for the next growing season! PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce is once again giving the public a taste of what local businesses have to offer. The chamber of commerce will host its annual “Taste of the North Country” this Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Plattsburgh State Field House on Rugar Street. The event, now in its 14th year, will bring together 25 businesses from across the region offering samples of various foods and beverages and include an auction of more than 350 items. Jody A. Parks, executive vice president for the chamber of commerce, said the event has grown considerably since its inception, and has something for everyone. “It’s turned into this amazing auction and food tasting event all combined into one,” said Parks. “It’s something that, if you haven’t experienced it yet, you need to check this out.” Though the event began mainly as an auction, Taste of the North Country has evolved to be equally as known for its food, said Parks. “We’ve got some restau-
rants who have been doing this, I think for all 13 years like the Ground Round and Anthony’s [Restaurant and Bistro],” said Parks. “There’s all kinds of food and drinks to be had at the food tasting portion of this ... Most people go away thinking, ‘I didn’t even know some of these restaurants could do that kind of stuff. The food is really amazing.’” “It’s a great promotion for the restaurants and the vendors, as well,” Parks added. Businesses new to the event this year are Dunkin Donuts; Elf ’s Farm, Winery and Cider Mill; Kentucky Fried Chicken; Olive Ridley’s; The Smoked Pepper; and The Station Café and Gifts. Other participating businesses include Adirondack Coffee Roasters; Adirondack Truffle Company; AgriMark/McCadam Cheese; Dame's Discount Liquor and Wine; Geoffrey's Pub and Restaurant; L & M Discount Liquor and Wine; Lake Placid Pub and Brewery; LakeShore Candy; Liquor and Wine Warehouse; McDonald's; Ninety-Nine Restaurant; Pepsi-Cola Bottling Group; Sam's Club; and Wal-Mart SuperCenter. The Taste of the North
County auction will include an array of items that should be appealing to everyone who attends the event, said Parks. “We have an absolutely incredible auction. We get donations from our chamber members and they’re very, very generous,” said Parks. “There’s definitely something that everybody would want.” Hotel accommodations, restaurant gift certificates, gas cards, savings bonds and gift baskets are among the items that will be up for bid. Among the “big ticket” items this year are a sapphire and diamond ring donated by Perrywinkle’s Fine Jewelry, valued at $2,880, and crystal lamps donated by Schonbek Worldwide Lighting, valued at $750 and $1,100. While getting a great deal is part of the fun of an auction, Parks emphasized regardless of the amount spent on an item, the money raised helps the chamber of commerce with its continued efforts of promoting and marketing the region and its various programs to help businesses and the local economy. “You know you’re going to go to Anthony’s or the Ground Round or to Ninety-

e are only a few weeks into the fall hunting season and already we’ve seen two careless acts by hunters — one in Vermont and another in New York. The first took place Oct. 22 when a man mistook another for a deer and fired at him with his Connecticut Valley Arms muzzleloader. The bullet tore through the man’s abdomen and, at last report, he was listed in critical condition. The second took place Oct. 25 and involved a turkey hunter in Vermont who mistook a man sitting in a camouflage chair for a Tom, shooting him in the head and torso. His condition, too, is critical. Having been shot myself in the throat during a deer drive in 1993 by a man who mistook me for a deer, I speak from experience when I say, please, please identify your target. There is a certain amount of risk associated with hunting. Uncertain things can and do happen — like a man firing at a deer and hitting a target beyond he never knew was there. But, mistaking a human being for a game animal or bird is unconscionable. You cannot take back the bullet after you pull the trigger. I know — I live with the repercussions every day of my life, as does the man who made that near deadly decision 16 years ago. So, please think before you act. Here is the information regarding the two shootings: In New York: On Oct. 22 at approximately 7:41 a.m., State Police in Canton were called with a report of a hunting accident off Dayton Road in the town of Potsdam. Investigation revealed Ricky A. Brunelle, 43, Ellenburg Depot, was hunting on property he leases off South Canton Road in the town of Potsdam. Brunelle and his hunting partner split up and began hunting at approximately 7 a.m. Brunelle stated he later observed what he thought was a deer and fired one shot from his Connecticut Valley Arms, .50 caliber muzzleloader rifle. He heard someone shout from the direction he had fired and he found Bernard H. Sharlow, 39, Norwood, had been struck in the abdomen by the shot he had fired. Sharlow was accompanied by another hunter. The hunters carried Sharlow to the road and he was transported to Canton/Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam by EMS. The New York State Police Troop B Forensic Identification Unit responded to assist with processing the scene. St Lawrence County District Attorney Nicole Duve was advised. Brunelle was charged with second-degree assault and arraigned in the Town of Potsdam Court before Town Justice Sam Charleson. He was released under the supervision of the St. Lawrence County Probation Department. Further investigation into the incident is ongoing. In Vermont: On Oct. 25, at approximately 8:18 a.m., State Police and State Game Wardens responded to Sand Hill Road in Bradford to a 911 call that a turkey hunter had been shot. Upon arrival, troopers, game wardens and Upper Valley rescue found the victim, Ryan Terrill, 22, Bradford, suffering from gunshot wounds due to shotgun bird shot. Terrill was transported to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries. The shooter was found to be Richard Sylvester, 49, Topsham. Initial investigation showed the scene was a cornfield bordered by a wood line located off Sand Hill Road. Terrill was sitting in a camouflage chair just inside the wood line. He was wearing full camouflage clothing. Sylvester was walking from the roadway along the edge of the wood line when he shot at what he thought was a turkey, striking Terrill. They were not hunting together. Terrill was struck on his left side torso and head region. Sylvester attempted to render aid to Terrill; he then left to a nearby residence to call 911. He then returned to the scene. State game wardens are reconstructing the scene. There will be a joint investigation with the wardens and State Police detectives. The case will be reviewed with the Orange County state’s attorney upon completion.

City receives funding for landfill closure PLATTSBURGH — The city of Plattsburgh now has federal funding to assist with the closure and capping of the former Akey Road Municipal Landfill. The New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation presented the city with a ceremonial check for $4,673,000 to pay for the entire cost of the project, which includes a $2.3 million stimulus grant and a $2.3 million low-interest loan from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund. The presentation was made by state Environmental Facilities Corporation acting president Matthew Millea to Mayor Donald M. Kasprzak Oct. 30. “This project demonstrates that stimulus projects are under-construction and putting New Yorkers to work, creating positive, long-lasting economic and environmental benefits,” stated Millea. “Thanks to Gov. Paterson and our con-
gressional delegation’s support of funding water quality projects through the Federal stimulus program, we are able to make this important announcement today.” “I appreciate the support of Gov. Paterson and all the New York State agencies involved, especially the Environmental Facilities Corporation, for this generous funding package,” said Kasprzak. “This is another example of the interest by Gov. Paterson for the North Country environment and its residents. The project includes the construction of an impermeable landfill membrane liner and a groundwater interceptor trench. The liner will prevent rainwater from seeping through the landfill and protect groundwater. Construction began in October and is expected to end in November 2010. The project is expected to create several construction jobs.

having a shorter amount of time to donate supposedly makes people more inclined to make a donation instead of having it in the back of their mind, thinking they have more time to donate.” Since Aug. 15, Hannah’s Hope Fund has raised more than $160,000 that will qualify toward the challenge grant, said Favaro. In order to make up the difference by their deadline, fundraising has been stepped up considerably, she said. “There are a ton of events planned between now and Feb. 15, “ said Favaro. “It was all about putting the pedal to the medal and trying to take full advantage of this opportunity.” Though the majority of the events for Hannah’s Hope for a Million challenge are planned in the Albany area where the Sames family lives, there are a few in their native North Country, said Favaro. “The biggest one here is going to be the Texas Hold ‘em benefit,” said Favaro, referring to a poker tournament scheduled for early next year. The benefit, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, at American Legion Post 1619 in West Plattsburgh, will be different than regular Texas Hold ‘em tournaments, explained Favaro. Traditionally, cash prizes are awarded, however, the Jan. 30 benefit will feature prizes such as a buy-in for a Texas Hold ‘em
tournament at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., and golfing packages. The benefit will be limited to 125 players, with a $60 entry fee per person. The entry fee will include a full buffet and prizes throughout the evening. “People are kind of encouraged to register as early as they can to ensure a seat because we expect it will sell out,” said Favaro. “It will be a very professional, wellrun tournament.” However, the next event to benefit Hannah’s Hope Fund, will be a two-day “Spin-a-thon.” The event will be held at Champlain Valley Fitness Saturday, Nov. 14, and the Plattsburgh YMCA Sunday, Nov. 15, with registration held both days prior to 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 12-4 p.m. sessions. Spinners are encouraged to collect pledges and donations toward their participation. For more information about the Spin-a-thon, call Tracy or Cindy Rotz at 5635553. For more information about the Texas Hold ‘em benefit, contact Dan Mannix at 566-6060 or via e-mail at dmcmannix@yahoo.com or Earl Burnell at 563-6944 or earlburnell@yahoo.com. The complete list of upcoming events to benefit Hannah’s Hope Fund may be found on the organization’s Web site, www.hannahshopefund.org.
‘History in Six Galleries’ on display PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Historical Association/Museum, 98 Ohio Ave., is sponsoring “Clinton County History in Six Galleries” from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays during the fall. The exhibit is held in the museum in the 1905 three-story U.S. Infantry Band Building and features the “Champlain Tercentenary (1909) Exhibit” in this quadricentennial year. Exhibits on Redford Glass, musical instruments, War of 1812, portraits of county pioneers and Hotel Champlain are among those on display. For more information, contact director Carol BlaresleeCollin at 561-0340.
How is Hannah? Since being diagnosed with GAN three years ago, Hannah has been doing fairly well, said her mother. However, her ability to walk has slightly deteriorated. “She’s been having more difficulty walking; her legs are definitely a lot weaker,” said Sames. In addition, Sames said her daughter may have recently contracted the H1N1 flu virus, which has become a nationwide epidemic in recent months. She recently received the H1N1 vaccine and it has yet to be determined if the symptoms she is exhibiting is that of the virus or a reaction to the vaccination, said Sames. Despite the challenges Hannah faces, Sames said her daughter remains in good spirits. “She does recognize that she does have difficulty, but she perseveres. She pushes on,” said Sames. Much of Hannah’s perseverance has to do with the support she receives from family, friends, and even “total strangers,” said her mother. “And, that’s the only way we’ll make the $500,000 match to fund this life-saving research,” said Sames. “We’re really hoping we can be people’s charity of choice, particularly over this holiday season and because all donations will basically be matched.” Cards wishing Hannah well may be sent to her at 19 Blue Jay Way, Rexford N.Y. 12148. Donations — which are tax-deductible due to the organization’s 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status — in care of Hannah’s Hope for GAN may also be sent to the same address.
gage payment for the building, which will be a one-story, 3,500-square-foot building when the project is complete. The cost of the project is also expected to be kept down by leaving out any features that aren’t a necessity. “Our goal from the start has been to have a professional look. Not an exorbitant appearance, just a professional-appearing building,” said Brooks. “We’re just looking for a well-built, functional facility.” The groundbreaking this Monday will be open to the public, noted Brooks. The site is located on Tom Miller Road between the Homestead Restaurant and the Dannemora Federal Credit Union. The project is expected to take three to six months to complete.

$125,000-$150,000 in value. “It’s been wonderful,” said Brooks. The desire to move the Plattsburgh offices from Durkee Street — where the organization has occupied for the past five years — was due to a lack of space, said Brooks. “We’ve just really outgrown the facility that we’re in,” said Brooks. “We occupy two separates spaces within the building on two different floors. The space no longer meets our needs.” Though the move is what Brooks has referred to as a “half-million” project, he said he is unsure if the project will actually cost anywhere near $500,000. “Our ultimate goal is to move in free and clear. I’m not sure if that’s possible. That’s going to be up to the community,” Brooks said, adding additional donations would help continue to defray the cost. Regardless, Hospice is prepared to budget a mort-
