Yee-haw! State rolls out Frontier Town campground Stakeholders see campgrounds as rebirth

The first phase of the multi-year project to build a new state-run campground at the former Frontier Town theme park has been completed.

Dignitaries gathered Thursday at the campgrounds, located 100 miles north of Albany, to celebrate the opening of the day use, equestrian and campground portions of the effort.

“I’m not aware of anything like this in New York state,” state Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos told dignitaries assembled before a misty mountain landscape ringed with fall foliage nearing peak levels.

The mood was festive.

As jaunty country-western music tinkled overhead, cowboy hat-wearing attendees donned pins resembling the tin badges sold at the former Wild West-themed destination, which was shuttered in 1998, portending dark times for the community located off Exit 29 on the Adirondack Northway.

Lakeside School growth plans for purchase of Black Kettle Farm Increased enrollment, new families, added tuition support move school toward sustainable future

ESSEX | Expansion at Lakeside School comes with each family’s step to a new grade level.

As a community, they are also preparing to purchase the Black Kettle Farm and surrounding land.

School Administrator Maeve Taylor said the school enrolled 39 students and another 10 children in the parent-toddler program.

It was an exciting start this fall.

“This year we’ve been able to increase our tuition assistance,” she said of sustained growth that supports both the region and Lakeside goals.

“We have a total amount at $20,500 for our families, making it possible for more children to enroll.”

Lakeside School also added a third teacher for the Sprouts Early Childhood Daycare program to help provide for the youngest children.

“Our new teacher is Courtney Marvin. Courtney has time in her day to prepare wonderful things, right now she is making pasta sauce and homemade pasta,” Taylor told The Sun. “And with a grant from the Adirondack Foundation through Generous Acts, we have been able to purchase food from local farms, adding local organic vegetables and other items to our menu.”

Growth at Lakeside has reached areas beyond the small Adirondack farmland.

Four families so far have relocated so children could attend Lakeside’s Waldorfbased programs.

One moved here from Montana, two came here from New York City, one came from Florida, and another family, from Rochester, will be visiting soon, Taylor said.

“It’s really wonderful. We’re growing our community and attracting people to our area.”

Program expansion is helping, with an eye on exploration and science.

Longtime Lakeside Kindergarten and outdoor educator Gregg VanDeusen is also teaching a block with elementary level grades 1,2 and 3, Taylor said.

As an outdoor class, it provides the for learning the very foundations of science through nature.

With feet on the ground, the school is taking measured paces toward long-term sustainability with plans to purchase the buildings and property at Black Kettle Farm.

Lakeside has leased the facilities and grounds for 10 years for one dollar a year through a generous agreement with the Eddy Foundation.

“But with promising trends for continued growth and increased recognition for the school’s unique, outdoor-focused education,

the Lakeside board, faculty and community have decided to solidify their connection to the land and launch a major capital campaign to purchase the Black Kettle property including buildings, barns, farm fields, gardens, and orchards,” the school’s board announced in a recent news release.

“It’s exciting to think we’re within reach of laying the foundation for a school that will be part of our community for generations,” School Board President Carolyn Sicher said.

The Eddy Foundation and the Lakeside’s board have agreed on a purchase price of $260,000, the release said.

The campaign is working to raise $500,000 to ensure a substantial reserve for capital improvements and maintenance.

“We’ve already raised $220,000 from friends, parents, grandparents, and community members, with more pledges already on the way,” Sicher said.

Among committed funds is a $25,000 grant from the Cloudsplitter Foundation.

Looking beyond the buildings and grounds, Lakeside is also looking to add 143 acres of Wild Forest that the Eddy Foundation would maintain as a wildlife preservation with longterm use agreement Lakeside School programs.

“This amazing site has become a part of who we are and shaped our school programs

over the last decade,” Taylor said.

“The farm has laid the foundation for our outdoor programs which have brought us national recognition.”

Asked if expansion might include more school buildings for classrooms, Taylor told The Sun the board and families are developing a master plan now.

“Should we add a fourth and fifth grade?

Or should we add an even larger daycare program with even more teachers?” Taylor said of some options being considered.

“We will be sending a survey to our community soon.”

Drawing from the surrounding farm fields and forest for Waldorf-based programs, Lakeside School “cultivates the whole child in an evolving ecosystem of independent thinking, community spirit, and stewardship of our natural world,” Taylor said.

“The school sees the capital campaign to purchase Black Kettle Farm as an opportunity for the surrounding community to invest in the nurturing of its most precious resource – the lives of its children.”

WARRENSBURG | The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is urging motorists to be wary of moose and use “extreme caution” while navigating roadways this month.

At least four of the animals have been struck by motor vehicles between Sept. 29 and Oct. 1, said the DEC. The uptick can be attributed to breeding season, said DEC Region 5 Wildlife Manager Paul Jensen.

“We definitely see an increase in activity during this time,” Jensen told The Sun. “It’s the rutting period right now.”

Two of incidents occurred in the Warrensburg area; one near Dannemora and one near Meacham Lake.

In each case, the animals were killed by the collision or later euthanized, according to the state agency.

Two additional moose were killed in unusual circumstances at the Moose River Plains Wild Forest near Inlet after a bull moose charged hunters, who shot and killed the animal.

The hunters noticed an injured cow nearby, which was later dispatched.

While the DEC is awaiting the formal results of a field assessment, staff speculated the cow’s broken shoulder was caused by the bull in an aggressive attempt to mate.

The state agency said re-establishment of the moose population in New York, including clusters in northern and northwestern part of the state, is generally viewed as a positive sign of a “healthier, more complete natural system.”

“That’s really attributed to where we have big conservation easements with active forestry,” Jensen said.

Young regenerating forest and wetlands provide a large volume of foodstuffs, he said.

“It’s really good browse that’s highly nutritious and within their reach,” he said.

There have been no fatalities since the DEC began keep tracking of moose-vehicle collisions in 1990.

A total of nine moose were killed in collisions in 2017.

The high was in 2016, when 22 were killed: 11 by collisions, and 11 due to unknown causes.

Moose are most active at dawn and dusk, times of poor visibility.

“When struck, their height often causes them to impact the windshield of a car or pickup truck, not just the front of the vehicle,” said the DEC. Motorists are advised to reduce speed and use flashers or a headlight signal to warn other drivers when moose are spotted near the road. ■

The Adirondack Cuisine Trail network, Ball said, “helps tie together the smallest villages ... and the city of Plattsburgh. The trails can grow and we can take this (collaboration) beyond our borders.”

All six new trails are in Essex, Franklin and Clinton counties and encompass some 86 farms, food producers, sugar-makers, orchards, distilleries and vintners.

Trail names are: Champ’s Cuisine Trail; North Country Cuisine Trail; Champlain Valley Cuisines Trail; Boquet Valley Cuisine Trail; AuSable Valley Cuisine Trail and the Adirondack Lakes Cuisine Trail.

Assemblyman D. Billy Jones, from Chateaugay, said the Mace Chasm Farm backdrop felt right at home.

“I grew up on a farm,” he said. “What a wonderful way to introduce to the rest of the world, to the rest of New York, what we have here.”

“We’re excited for local food to become part of the Adirondacks that people love so well,” Thomas-Train said.

The herd of about 20 cattle mooed loudly in apparent approval of the fanfare.

Last Friday marked a milestone after nearly three years of planning spearheaded by Jay White, vice president of the Cornell Cooperative Extension, who formed the Adirondack Cuisine Trail Association, a non-profit trade association.

“Today is very exciting,” White said.

Pointing to the farmland, he added, “this is an amazing example of what the North Country has to offer.”

The Adirondack Park is world-renowned, White said.

“And there is the need to tell the story in a different way. Asa and Courtney’s story is just one among many.”

White called the milestone start to Adirondack Cuisine Trails “a culmination of local ingenuity” blended with innovation of Cornell Cooperative Extension and Adirondack Harvest and the dedication of Gov. Andrew Cuomo to the upstate economy.

With these trails, White said, agricultural communities gain valuable opportunities to create a more sustainable economy.

“Farmers and producers have been given a better chance to tell their stories and sell their products.”

A core group from each of six Adirondack trails will develop signage and continue to promote and administer a trail to encourage growing agri-tourism industry here.

The six new Cuisine Trail systems doubles the number now open in New York state.

The launch brought dignitaries from Albany to area farms last Friday, including state Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Richard A. Ball.

Agri-tourism, Ball said, draws interest from people who want to not only see and experience Adirondack adventure, but also taste and try local foods, brews and flavors.

The Adirondack Cuisine Trail system, he said, celebrates a North Country heritage, promoting the hard work of local farmers.

DOT is tasked with sighting locations for signage, permitting the signs and ensuring the Cuisine Trails are easy to follow.

The integrated approach to opening the Adirondack Cuisine Trails is also looking to expand into joint trail promotions with Circuit du Paysan in Quebec and with cuisine trails in Vermont.

Farmers and tourism officials seem ready to build an international loop for farm and food exploration around the entirety of Lake Champlain.

Building for 20 years now, Quebec’s Circuit du Paysan inspired the Cuisine Trails in the Adirondacks, White said.

“Things just seem to work better when we work together, don’t they?” Ball said.

The trails also highlight the diversity of products and farming heritage of local communities.

Farmers from Asgaard Farm and DaCy Meadow Farm were also at the event, along with CCE Adirondack Harvest Administrator Laurie Davis and CCE farm educator Dr. Carly Summers.

David Brunner owns and farms the lands at Asgaard Farm & Dairy in AuSable Forks.

Asgaard is part of the AuSable Valley Cuisine Trail.

“Jay (White) has taken on a great task reinforcing a nice trend in farming over the last decade,” Brunner said of the effort come to fruition.

“It’s been absolutely wonderful to watch the influx of new farmers. It’s been very gratifying for us to see the talent, enthusiasm and youth. The cuisine trails will reinforce all of that and provide a support for all of us.”

Brunner and his wife Rhonda Baker have owned Asgaard for 30 years and reopened the dairy with their goat herd about 10 years ago.

The Cuisine Trail system is not a seasonal project, Brunner said. It will be open throughout the year as an option for curious skiers or skaters or winter hikers.

“We’re farming all winter long,” Brunner said.

“All of these farms are open and operating.”

Brunner said the Cuisine Trails are also meant to be explored by local, year-round residents.

Life in the The Sun Editorial middle Lack of debates a disservice to voters — again Perhaps because I am a middle child, but I always found the path in the middle very comfortable.

By Dan Alexander The pressure of • PUBLISHER • being the oldest where much is expected and the pampering provided to the youngest who received everything on a platter never seemed all that fair when I was younger.

But as an adult, I realized being the middle child provided me with the independence and the ability to see the pros and cons of my big brother on my right and little sister on my left.

Perhaps that’s why I am a strong advocate of the balanced, independent approach to most things.

After watching the hysteria caused last week by the appointment of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, it seems clear to me that neither the right nor the left will ever be satisfied.

It’s either all or nothing, which leads to nothing but constant turmoil.

The Democrats were determined to right the wrong when President Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland, and he was refused a hearing or a vote by the Republican-led Senate in 2016.

Resurrecting a remark made by Sen. Joe Biden back in the 1990s that no Supreme Court nominee should be considered in a year when a new president will be seated allowing the electorate to have a say in the nomination choice.

With both serving on the DC Court of Appeals, Judge Garland joined 27 out of 28 opinions written by Judge Kavanaugh, while Judge Kavanaugh joined 28 out of 30 of Judge Garland’s rulings.

The point is neither side wins when they refuse to work together. Even though Justice Kavanaugh has now been confirmed, the Democrats will go to any extent to delegitimize his position with the hope of eventually removing him from the court.

Sooner or later, perhaps even in the upcoming midterm elections held in November, the Democrats will once again gain a majority where they will seek to undo what the Republicans have been undoing in the last two years since they took control.

As a nation facing even greater political turmoil in the days ahead, we can’t maintain this nuclear environment.

We’ll accomplish far more if the parties find a way to unite the country in the middle and seek an equal balance that is fair to all concerned. ■

Just four weeks before Election Day, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has not yet agreed to debate his challengers.

The decision is a throwback to 2014, when Cuomo agreed to just one debate with his opponents.

But a lot has happened since then to alter the state and federal landscape.

We’ve seen the arrest and conviction of scores of legislative leaders and former Cuomo aides on corruption charges.

The governor’s fl agship economic development programs continue to be shrouded in scandal and are delivering questionable results despite pumping billions into the local economy.

Cuomo likes to tout his record on job creation — “New York state today has more private sector jobs than it has had in the history of the state,” he told business leaders in Bolton Landing last month — but the true picture upstate is far murkier.

While net total job growth numbers are steady for the Empire State as a whole, most of these new jobs are created in the five boroughs.

Once surrounding counties like Suffolk and Westchester are factored in, the number reaches 90 percent of all new jobs statewide, according to a report issued by the state Comptroller’s Office last year.

Stefanik’s smear campaign nonfactual

To the Editor: On Nov. 6, voters must think carefully about which candidate will best represent each one of us in New York’s 21st Congressional District.

Why are Rep. Elise Stefanik and her party’s associated PACs hiding behind twisted negative television ads that misrepresent her opponent?

The tone and falsehoods depicted in these ads make me question her leadership abilities and judgment.

The Post Star and other media outlets have researched and revealed numerous factual errors in these ads.

Why does Stefanik, as an incumbent, think that running such a negative campaign is important to her reelection?

Simply put, I am not impressed at all with her choices of campaign leadership via deceit and malice.

The above landscape is unfolding as Cuomo, a Democrat, increasingly positions the state as a bulwark against Trump administration policies.

Should New York be the homebase of the resistance? Is this really in the best of interest of all New Yorkers?

Perhaps Cuomo can effectively tackle state issues at the same time he grows increasingly comfortable lobbing bombs and taking on President Trump on the national stage.

But doesn’t it at least warrant a public discussion?

A public debate takes on additional salience as the fate of the GOP-controlled state Senate hinges on just one seat.

A Democratic takeover could drastically reshape politics in New York, and voters deserve to know how Cuomo would navigate such an altered landscape and what policies four more years of a Cuomo Administration working in tandem with a blue state legislature may portend.

Cobb has issued policy solutions

To the Editor: Th is letter is in response to several statements in The Sun’s editorial entitled “Cobb’s problems deeper than fundraising woes.”

The editorial correctly points out that Tedra Cobb has raised far less than the incumbent, Rep. Elise Stefanik.

A relevant fact not mentioned is that according to an earlier piece in the Sun dated July 16, 2018, Cobb has “garnered far more support than Stefanik within the Empire State.”

Cobb’s financing is coming in major part from her district, not from outside, which is the case with Stefanik.

The editorial also states that Cobb “has declined to offer her own policy solutions” and relies on “core values over concrete ideas.”

Actually, she has expressed policies on a variety of issues.

Cuomo faces Republican Marc Molinaro, Green Party nominee Howie Hawkins, Libertarian Larry Sharpe and independent candidate Stephanie Miner on Nov. 6.

He should debate them.

We’ve spoken with most of these candidates over the past several weeks, and we think voters would benefit from a series of televised exchanges so they can share their vision with voters statewide.

Of course, Cuomo squared off with Democratic primary opponent Cynthia Nixon in August, but the hour-long event was roundly criticized for skating over upstate issues in favor of New York City-centric issues and petty squabbling.

Polls show Cuomo has opened up a sizable lead over Molinaro, who contended he is ducking a showdown.

The other candidates have issued similar criticisms.

Of course, the governor is also well ahead of his four opponents in fundraising. As such, he has little reason to subject himself to broadsides by his foes.

But Nov. 6 is ultimately a job performance review, not a coronation, and Cuomo should publicly defend his record — especially as he eyes brighter pastures.

Let’s take just two issues as examples.

On veterans and their problems of reintegration into the economy, she calls for programs to train vets for specific trades and professions.

She also supports expanding mentoring and counseling services to support vets during the transition to civilian life.

And she advocates letting military spouses carry licenses and certifications across state lines to facilitate their employment.

With respect to health care, Stefanik voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act. In a sharp policy contrast, Cobb supports comprehensive health insurance for U.S. residents.

She stresses that this benefits not only a large number of residents in New York’s 21st Congressional District, but that it is vitally important for maintaining the medical infrastructure of the North Country and its ability to attract new businesses and workers.

Cobb’s policy positions are there, along with the “core values.”

Drivers who complete this six-hour course save 10 percent on their liability, personal injury protection and collision insurance for three years and may reduce up to four points on their driving record.

Course completion is transmitted to the DMV on each student’s driving record.

This course entails student participation, an informative workbook and three safety education films. There is no formal testing. Participation in the defensive driving course has been shown to reduce traffic accidents by 18.2 percent and repeat traffic offenses by 57.3 percent.

The expansive effort is a joint undertaking between numerous state and local agencies, who delivered a steady stream of comments in an often-emotional ceremony as horseback riders stood at attention in the background.

Stakeholders cut the ribbon after 40 minutes of speeches.

Stakeholders have painted the project as nothing short as transformational for the region.

“Our town is at a new beginning,” said North Hudson Supervisor Ron Moore, “one that will give hope to new businesses and one that will provide creation of new job opportunities.”

Moore joins state and local officials who hope the state investments paired with the state’s purchase of nearby Boreas Ponds will act as an economic catalyst for a region that has long struggled with high unemployment rates and a lack of services.

The site’s new trails will link into existing community connector trails and the Schroon Lake-North Hudson Snowmobile Trail, ideally acting as a feeder to tourist destinations in the so-called Five Towns, or the central Adirondack communities of North Hudson, Indian Lake, Newcomb, Long Lake and Minerva.

“It’s going to help all the towns in the area — not just the towns, but the county,” said Minerva Supervisor Steve McNally. ”This is going to bring a lot of people to the area and we’re very excited about it.”

Stakeholders also believe steering visitors into less-visited communities will ameliorate another mounting concern in the Adirondacks — overuse in the wildly-popular High Peaks.

“There’s an opportunity now to take some pressure off the northern High Peaks and bring some more prosperity to the southern park,” said state Assemblyman Dan Stec (R-Queensbury).

To date, an estimated total of $25 million in public and private resources have been committed to the project.

At least one private business has signed onto the effort: Paradox Brewery, a Schroon Lake-based craft brewery, is in the process of relocating to an adjacent parcel.

GROUP EFFORT

Local officials spun their wheels for years over what to do with the former theme park.

Essex County seized portions of the facility for back taxes, and engaged in lengthy litigation with an adjoining landowner following disputes generated at a 2014 county-run tax auction designed to unload the property.

“This is the result of a vision,” said Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Preston. “It wasn’t just one person — it was a group.”

Vice Chairman Shaun Gillilland recounted the years of battles over the property, which encompasses both town and county-owned land.

“I wouldn’t have think we could have gotten here, but we have, and it really shows you can affect change,” Gillilland said. “No one entity would ever have been able to get this done.”

The new map includes topographical detail so hikers will know the physiographical context of the trails they’re hiking. All trails are listed in chart form showing descriptions of each trail, length, degree of difficulty, directions and special features.

A $2,000 grant from the International Paper Foundation helped produce the new map, and CATS Business Sponsorships provided additional funding. The new site will contain 91 camping sites, including 33 designed for equestrian usage, while the seasonal day use area has slots for 34 vehicles.

Seggos told reporters after the event he felt confident there is a demand for a new state-run campground.

“I have no doubt that Frontier Town will be a destination for not just new New Yorkers, but many people,” Seggos said, citing legacy of the former park.

Earlier, more than half of the crowd raised their hands when the commissioner asked if they had visited the theme park, a destination so popular in the 1950s and 1960s, it drew performers like Johnny Cash.

“I think the investments are certainly worth it,” Seggos said. We have record usership right now at state parks and DEC facilities.

We’re seeing great numbers just in our own facilities — not just the backwoods.”

While the DEC and Office of General Services have turned a corner on the campgrounds and day use area portion of the effort, a question mark continues to dangle over the component of the project that seeks to entice businesses to relocate to the acreage flagged for private investment.

Empire State Development issued a Request for Proposals last year, but has remained tight-lipped on progress. “(ESD) remains engaged in discussions with the town, county and others involved in the Request for Proposals process to determine the next steps in developing the property,” said an ESD spokesman on Thursday.

WORK CONTINUES AT BREWERY

Construction continues at the nearby Paradox Brewery site, which broke ground last April on a 11.2 acre parcel.

Co-founder Paul Mrocka told The Sun he hopes to move equipment inside by November and start beer production by January.

“We hope to have an official opening by Memorial Day,” Mrocka said.

The expansion will create 30 jobs once fully operational.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo did not attend the ribbon-cutting, but officials indicated he had a firm hand on the tiller throughout the process.

Seggos praised his balance of environmental safeguards while also helping to shepherd in economic development for the region.

“It was everybody working together nonstop for a couple of years and the governor really lit that fuse,” Seggos said.

The commissioner recalled it wasn’t long ago that the state was discussing the idea of closing state-run campgrounds in the wake of budget shortfalls.

“There was a feeling that the environment had been put off to the side,” he said.

Cuomo called North Hudson “a prime location to introduce visitors to all that the Adirondacks have to offer and encourage travelers to further explore New York’s great outdoors.”

“With the first phase of the Gateway to the Adirondacks now complete, visitors can begin to experience this one-of-a-kind recreational site, helping to boost the local economy and the region’s ever-growing tourism industry,” he said in a statement.

DEC expects the second phase of the project will be completed by next summer. ■

NEWPORT | Deborah R. Murphy, 67, of Woodchuck Hill Road, died on Sept. 29, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica.

Deborah was born on Sept. 8, 1951 in Mount Kisco, the daughter of Betty (Biggs) Light of Elizabethtown and the late Kempton Light.

She graduated from Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School and furthered her education at SUNY Plattsburgh. Debbie later graduated from Utica College with a bachelor’s degree in business.

On Sept. 1, 2007, Debbie was united in marriage with John Murphy at their home in Newport.

She had a distinguished 35 year career with Indium Corporation. She retired as a materials manager, Indium and Gallium, in 2017.

Debbie was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit #551 in Elizabethtown and a previous member of the World Trade Council.

She will be fondly remembered for her expertise in baking, supplying cakes and other baked goods for many area celebrations, events and bake sales for local charities.

Survivors besides her husband, John and mother, Betty; one daughter, Heather (Robert) Borden of Newport; three sisters, Sally (Frank) Costello of Glens Falls, Priscilla Young of Po-

casset, Massachusetts, and Laura Light of Keene; one brother, John (Lori) Light of Elizabethtown; seven grandchildren, Zackary (Alexandria) Borden of Vernon, Jacob and Isabella Borden of Newport, Joshua Murphy of Utica and Kody, Cameron and Kaiden Murphy of Newport; one stepson, Michael (Becky) Murphy of Key Largo, Florida; one great-grandson, Blake Borden; several nieces and nephews; and the many members of her husbands family.

In addition to her father, she was predeceased by a stepson, Jason Murphy.

Funeral services will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, on Friday at 11 a.m., with Kenneth Palmer officiating.

Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Newport. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 5-7 p.m. The American Legion Auxiliary Service will be held at 6 p.m.

The Westport Fire Company and Emergency Squad is grappling with the same issues facing squads across upstate New York: Emergency medical technicians aging out of the profession has led to declining manpower.

And officials believe steep training requirements are dissuading new volunteers from signing up, amongst other societal changes.

The all-volunteer department has approximately 32 members, including 6 EMTs, down from 18 in the 1970s.

Of those six EMTs, several will retire and will not recertify; two are often out-oftown, while the others are retirees and plan to further ease into retirement.

“That leaves just one for weekdays,” Wells said.

The system is unsustainable.

“We’re not going to survive as an all-volunteer squad,” said Wells. “We’re going to start dropping calls and eventually the state will shut us down.”

State intervention is not unprecedented.

Crown Point Rescue Squad was forced to close in 2014 because of staffing issues.

Now as the squad prepares to explore their options to maintain coverage, they want to involve the public.

“We want to the community to be involved,” said Jim Rule, a fire commissioner and safety officer, “and we’re looking for suggestions and help in making these decisions.”

Such a system could involve a blend of volunteer and private staff, officials said.

Some towns, including Willsboro and Essex, have taken over squad operations from fire departments and have created new budget line items.

The uncertainty comes when Essex County is in the midst of mapping out a countywide EMS system.

But county officials continue to wrestle with what a final plan would cost and look like.

Westport Fire Company and Emergency Squad officials said they likely won’t survive until a countywide system is launched in whatever incarnation.

And even then, the squad initially viewed the system as a safety net — not as a permanent solution.

The ultimate decision will be determined by the Board of Fire Commissioners, which controls funding, in conjunction with the emergency service.

Off icials are now actively soliciting public input.

NFHS deal with state, section brings championships to all

PLATTSBURGH | Fans of Section VII sports will now have greater access to sectional, regional and state championship games and events thanks to a new deal struck with the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) earlier this year.

Under the deal, NFHS will hold the exclusive rights to stream Section VII championship events as well as state championship events through the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) and Section VII. “The NFHS network will be coming in and will provide crew, set up and taping with no setup on my end,” said Section VII Executive Director Matt Walentuk. “They are looking to have people from here broadcast the games so they are being done by people who know the schools and the players.”

Walentuk said the section has confirmed the Section VII soccer, football and volleyball championships will be streamed through the network.

“We have been in negotiations for about three years with Spectrum and NFHS to reach this agreement,” said Chris Watson,

“Spectrum will still have television rights, but the NFHS is the exclusive streaming partner and will stream anything we do.”

Walentuk said the NFHS will also allow other services to stream any sectional event they would not be streaming.

The NFHS is a subscription-based service, meaning there will be a fee to view a selected stream.

“This is the way to keep the programming a quality service and something our spectators will want to see,” said Walentuk. “NFHS acquired the Cube program, which I was familiar with in Lake Placid as something we used to stream our games. The issue at the time was it needed sponsorship and we did not have enough people watching. Now, the NFHS takes care of all that.”

The agreement is for 10 years beginning with the 2018-19 school year. The Network will provide live streaming through its online subscription platform at NFHSNetwork.com.

Th rough this partnership, NYSPHSAA schools will become involved in the NFHS Network School Broadcast Program (SBP).

Schools participating in the SBP can stream regular-season and playoff events for their fans throughout the year. In addition, schools can earn revenue by selling subscriptions to the network.

“We have a number of schools who have purchased the equipment to broadcast games on their own,” said Watson. “Schools have found it to be very easy to set up the camera at their facilities and some have started student groups who take care of providing the talent for the broadcasts.”

Watson and Walentuk both said the key to the new deal is the ability to stream games to anyone interested.

“This partnership allows us to provide our championship events to anyone who wants to view them anywhere in the world,” Watson said. “You do not have to live in a certain area or have a certain television provider in order to view the events. It really opens these up to a broader audience.”

“NFHS is here to highlight the studentathlete,” Walentuk said. “They will do a good job giving access to everyone who wants to watch our sectional title games.” ■

Patriots, Red Storm defeated in week six play

PORT HENRY | Jason Fletcher opened the scoring for the AuSable Valley Patriots Oct. 5 as they had upset on their mind, but the Moriah Vikings proved too much offensively, totaling 300 yards of offense in a 36-14 win over the Pats.

Fletcher, who finished with 130 rushing yards in the game, scored the opening points in the first quarter to give the Patriots a 6-0 lead. The Vikings answered two minutes later with a Dyllon Bougor 29 yard rush and scored the next 24 points on a 62 yard reception by Maddox Blaise and a one yard scoring run by Jerin Sargent.

Luis Perez’s 45 yard reception from quarterback Evan Snow cut the Viking lead to 24-14, but a 37 yard run for Blaise and a nine yard run from Bougor closed out the scoring.

Snow finished with 185 passing yards and a touchdown to Perez, who had 104 receiving yards on the day.

“I give AuSable a lot of credit for coming out hard and playing a tough game throughout with a limited bench,” Moriah coach Don Tesar said. “They did a great job and made it tough for us early.”

was able to find the right formula to score a 27-0 win over the Red Storm.

The Red Storm kept Beekmantown off the scoreboard until late in the second quarter when Christian Moura scored on a 22 yard run.

Moura then scored on a five yard run in the third quarter and a one yard run in the fourth before Will Colvard’s one yard run sealed the victory for the Eagles, who also clinched the CVAC regular season title with a current 6-0 record heading into their week seven game against Moriah.

Ben Munn ran for 59 yards to lead the Red Storm, while Isaiah Buckley had 33 yards rushing. Quarterback Rhett Darrah had 35 passing yards and 30 rushing yards, while Dylan Stewart had one pass completion for 18 yards. ■
