Town reminding dog owners of responsibilities

Local man designed first gasolinepowered ferry for Lake Champlain

MOOERS — The town of Mooers reminds dog owners of their responsibilities. When a dog becomes 4 months old, by state law, it must be licensed by its owner. In order to be licensed, a dog must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination. In the town of Mooers, there is a leash law which prevents dog owners from allowing their dogs to run free. Dogs must be on a leash, be contained by invisible fencing or be contained in a yard which will keep the animal on the property when outside. Dog Control Officer David Underwood enforce state and town animal control laws. He may be reached at 534-3898 or 236-4135.

Kelly Penfield announced as Mystery Girl By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com

Theatre group to host free production this Saturday

ROUSES POINT — Although surprised, a flattered Kelly Penfield accepted the role of being the second Mystery Girl in the village of Rouses Point — with 59 out of 130 people guessing her identity. Residents Geri Favreau and Mary Racicot teamed up with the North Countryman last month to give the people of the village something to talk about. “We think it went very well because it caused some excitement in the village and people, they talked about it a lot,” said Favreau of the contest. “We had a lot of guesses. Right ones and wrong ones.” Penfield was asked to be Mystery Girl because she is a Rouses Point native and many people know of her. “The village has changed a lot in 50 years,” explained Favreau. “Everybody kind of knew each other more back in those days than they do now. So, we wanted to find somebody that people knew.” “My most recent involvement would be be-

ROUSES POINT — If you can’t bring Rouses Point to the theatre, bring the theatre to Rouses Point. The Adirondack Regional Theatre will host a performance of “Once on this Island Jr.” this Saturday, July 11, at the Rouses Point Civic Center on Lake Street. Director and producer Thomas F. Lavin said the performing arts organization has been working on the upcoming production since auditions began in April and the cast of 40 was chosen. “We had a lot of talent and it was difficult to narrow the cast due to the tremendous amount of young local talent we had to choose from,” said Lavin. “I am excited

Opening of Hanet Plastics brings more jobs to the North Country By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Hanet Plastics Ltd., a Canadianbased plastics manufacturing firm, has marked the grand opening of its first U.S. facility. The plant — which officially began production of plastic food-protection products at its Imperial Industrial Park facility in May — was greeted amid much fanfare from the local business community July 2. Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce president Garry F. Douglas welcomed the company and its executive leaders — president and owner Jimmy Kaczkowski and strategic planner Michael S. Biskup — commending the opening of a facility that demonstrates “the latest example of quality growth and job creation in the region.” “This is part of a continuing example of an extraordinary economic development team here in Plattsburgh that works together toward the result, not toward each individual’s supposed role and task,” said Douglas. The process to attract Hanet Plastics to the North Country began more than one year ago, said Douglas, when Kaczkowski first contacted the chamber of commerce. Kaczkowski was invited to meet with chamber representatives and local officials to learn more about the area and what it has to offer. The relationship established with Hanet Plastics and agencies such as Empire State Development, the North Country Regional Workforce Investment Board, Crossborder Development Corporation and other agencies, ultimately led to providing a favorable market in which to launch the company’s first venture across the border, said

Production has already begun at the Hanet Plastics Plattsburgh facility. Here, a line worker handles the plastic food-protection trays as they emerge from a thermal forming machine. Kaczkowski. “It has been a positive experience for us and continues to be,” Kaczkowski said. “I hope everything works out beyond my expectations.” Biskup added both he and Kaczkowski are impressed with the chamber of commerce’s activity in the North Country and from the interagency cooperation to assist businesses new to the area. The partnerships Hanet Plastics has formed are “a vital thing for strangers in town,” he said. “We are pleased to be part of the community and we’re looking forward to a long relationship in Plattsburgh,” said Biskup. Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey, R-Peru, was among those to applaud the decision of Hanet Plastics to bring its first U.S. operation to Plattsburgh, particularly the Imperial Industrial Park, which housed the former Imperial Paper Mill. Duprey credited the people of the community for welcoming the firm with open arms and for being able to provide them with “a tremendous workforce.” “We have people who are ready to work, who are willing to work, who want to work and will show up for work and will do their jobs right,” said Duprey. “That

just isn’t the case everywhere, so we have a lot of reasons to be proud.” Plattsburgh City Mayor Donald M. Kasprzak said the city is working with other developers to make use of additional space at the Imperial Industrial Park, and Hanet Plastics will serve as a catalyst for continued growth. “This is one of the first steps,” said Kasprzak. “It gives other people the confidence to invest in the North Country and the city.” Hanet Plastics was founded in St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, by businessman Richard Hanak in 1973. Kaczkowski originally joined the company in 1988 as head of the company’s sales and marketing department and assumed his current leadership role following Hanak’s retirement in 2003. The company currently employs 13 workers at its Plattsburgh facility on two eight-hour shifts, with the plant operating Monday through Friday. The company expects to increase its workforce to at least 25 in the near future, said Biskup. That would allow for the creation of a third shift, allowing the plant to operate around the clock during the regular work week.

High flying fun

Public encouraged to attend meeting Tuesday CHAMPLAIN — A representative from Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s office will speak to the Champlain Town Council Tuesday, July 14, at Champlain Town Hall, 729 State Route 9, beginning at 7 p.m. The topic of discussion will be “Project Sunlight,” an initiative focused on giving the public increased access to information on governmental decision-making processes. Glen Michaels, an Assistant Attorney General from Cuomo’s Plattsburgh office, will give the presentation. The Project Sunlight Web site, www.sunlightny.com, is the first of its kind in New York State. The site provides easy access to campaign finance, lobbying, agency contracts, and legislative databases. New Yorkers can visit the Web site to see where their tax dollars are being spent and how their representatives are voting on key issues. The July 14 presentation is part of Cuomo’s broader statewide outreach efforts to inform the public about Project Sunlight and how it can be utilized. Members of the public are invited to attend this event. For more information, contact the Attorney General’s Plattsburgh office at 562-3288.

PLATTSBURGH — The city of Plattsburgh will host a fireworks display viewable from downtown Plattsburgh this Saturday, July 11, beginning at 9:30 p.m. In last week’s edition, it was incorrectly announced the display would take place Friday, July 10. For more information about this and other Mayor ’s Cup events, contact the mayor ’s office at 5637701 or visit www.mayorscup.com.

Cocktails to host benefit for Plattsburgh woman next Sunday jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — It was more than one year ago when Brenda Fountain was diagnosed with desquamative interstitial pneumonia, a very rare lung disease. The 35-year-old Plattsburgh native and her fiancé, Fred Jeffries, have had a difficult time dealing with her condition, which is considered to be fatal, said Jeffries. “Not much is known about the disease,” said Jeffries. “We really only know what we’ve read on-line, but every day there is

something new to read about.” What Jeffries and Fountain do know, he said, is there is “very little treatment” for the condition. Fountain currently sees a lung specialist in Plattsburgh on a regular basis and travels to Boston, Mass., every few months to see a specialist there, Jeffries added. Since her diagnosis, Fountain has had to utilize an oxygen tank to assist in her breathing, and she has been unable to work, said Jeffries. “She can’t go without [the oxygen tank],” he said. “The worst part is she knows that

she’s eventually going to pass on but it could be any time.” The thought of losing Fountain — his fiancée and friend — is something Jeffries said he hopes will never happen, despite what is known about the disease. “I try not to think about it. I’m hoping they come out with something to help her,” said Jeffries. “I want to be with her the rest of my life.” Jeffries is channeling his energy into planning a fundraiser for Fountain next Sunday, July 19. The majority of her medical expenses are covered by insurance, he said, but as-

Keeping track of pesky software deficiencies

M

any PC users are savvy enough to keep the operating system and anti-virus solution updated. But, how many keep other applications like Adobe’s Flash or Apple’s QuickTime updated? Some newer forms of malware exploit deficiencies in these third-party applications, so what’s a user to do? This week we answer that question as we look at Secunia Personal Software Inspector. Secunia PSI is a program that will scan a system, report such deficiencies and offer solutions. Let’s start by visiting secunia.com and clicking on the red button labeled “Software Inspectors” located in the lightgreen area identified as “Scan Your PC.” The next page discusses vulnerability scanning and has links to the different versions of PSI. Users not wanting to download and install something may opt for the simple scan option. To install and run the application select the red button labeled “Secunia PSI” located in the Home Users area. Once on the actual download page click the “Download Now” and choose the option to save the file. I normally save to the desktop so I remember to delete it after the installation process but the file can be saved anywhere desired. Close and save any work in progress, double-click the downloaded file to start the procedure and follow the

prompts to complete. When finished, allow the program to scan the system. When the scan finishes, PSI displays a list of security threats with a rating and a solution for each one. Secunia offers a link to a forum that allows users to learn more about a particular threat as desired. Users may register with Secunia PSI but it is not necessary and advanced options exist for people who want By Ron Poland more. Don’t forget to delete the downloaded .exe file as it not longer needed after the program is installed.

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

C

linton County Office for the Aging will have farmers market coupons again this year. The intent of Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is to economically support local farmers and provide low-income seniors with access to local fresh produce. Changes for this year: · Change in the check value — the value of each check has been increased to $4 (from $2). As a result, each booklet of checks should have five checks, not 10. · Increase in the income eligibility level — due to the annual increase in the Federal Poverty Rate, there is a slight increase in the income levels for program eligibility. Issuance of SFMNP checks are targeted to senior households (one or more individuals age 60 or older) who are, or affirm they are, low-income based on one or more of the following criteria: A. Gross monthly income at or below 185 percent of Federal Poverty Guidelines: $1,670/month for a one-person household; $2,246/month for a two-person household; or $2,823/month for a three-person household. Income levels increase by $577/month (base is $1,670) based on the number of persons in the applicant’s household. B. Currently receiving, or eligible to receive one of the following benefits: SSI, food stamps, public assistance, or Section 8 housing subsidy. SFMNP check issuance must occur to eligible seniors on a first come-first serve basis. Farmers Market checks cannot be reserved for “regulars” at congregate nutrition or other

sites. Encourage seniors to participate only if they are planning to use the coupons. Farmer Markets in Clinton County: · Chateaugay Lakes/ Adirondack Farmers Market: Hollywood Restaurant Route 374. Saturdays 10 a.m-2 p.m. July 4-Sept. 5 · Plattsburgh Farmers & Crafters Market: City parking lot Durkee and Broad streets. Saturdays 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and Wednesdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 1-Oct. 10. · Saranac Farmers Market: Saranac Town Hall Pavilion. Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 11-Sept. 12. The Clinton County Office for the Aging will be distributing the coupons throughout the county at nutrition sites and senior housing. You can use the coupons throughout the state at participating Farmers Markets. Call 565-4620 for more information.

Figuring out how to double your savings, double your fun I

’ve mentioned before that dollar sales paired with dollar coupons are one of my favorite ways to get free items at the grocery store. Another easy way is through double-coupon promotions. Double-coupon promotions are exciting! Many stores will match a coupon’s face value and pass the savings on to you, the shopper. Some stores double coupons every day, while others run special double coupon promotions certain days of the week or times of the year. In some cases, stores may even offer triple-coupon days. Regardless of how your stores handle double coupons, they are a great way to save even more money and get items for free. Here’s how coupon doubling works. If you have a 50-cent coupon, the cashier will scan it at the register and give you $1 off your item. Coupon doubling becomes even more fun when the doubled value equals the value of the item you’re buying. Let’s say you are buying a 2-liter bottle of soda that was on sale for a dollar. With a 50-cent

coupon doubled to $1, your bottle of soda is free! The store matches the coupon’s value of 50 cents and you pay nothing. So what happens if your doubled coupon value exceeds the cost of the item? During a recent double-coupon sale at a major retailer I purchased a $3.50 bottle of shampoo. I had a $2 coupon; the store doubled the coupon’s value to $4. Now, as I’ve mentioned in a previous column, many stores do allow what couponers call overage, when the value of a coupon exceeds the cost of an item. In the case of overage, the extra value is applied to the rest of your total. However, stores that double coupons typically do not give overage. In this instance, the $2 coupon would double to a $4 value, but since the item is $3.50, the store will “adjust down” the value to match

Cold, dispassionate — for science Am I cold – unemotional – for placing science before aesthetics? I hope so. Why? Yes, both can benefit, but either can harm. Indeed science destroys in war; in peace, it can inadvertently wreck ecology – extinguishing in decades, species and whole ecosystems evolved over thousands of millennia. Aesthetics; harm?! Inserted beneath awareness, deep discordant background music accompanies telephoto's enlarging distortion of windmill-imagery, colored sinister black in silhouette against gray foggy overcast skies. The word "-tower"’s, perceived height-exaggeration is liberally used. The viewer's invited into the picture, as voice-over declares wind "towers" driving someone " ... from...home!". Overdependence on aesthetics can cloud judgement. Serving propaganda, it subtly encourages destruction, or its negligence. Before exposure, some perceive large windmills unattractive but tolerable. Masked as revelation, propaganda emphasizing "unattractive" unconsciously intensifies that into torture, simplifying away tolerance: channeling all person-

the cost of the item, making it free. It’s important to check your store’s policy on doubling coupons, too. Policies on coupon doubling vary by store and retail chain. Some stores may double all coupons up to 50 cents or $1. Other stores may double coupons up to $2. Some stores will not double printable Internet coupons. Ask your store for a copy of its coupon policy, either at the store’s service counter or online via the store’s Web site. What if your store doesn’t double coupons? Don’t worry. You can still be a SuperCouponer even without douBy Jill Cataldo ble coupon promotions. I have noticed that double coupons tend to be a regional phenomenon. In many markets, grocery stores may not offer double coupons at all. This is the case where I live, in the suburbs of Chicago,

So, at displacing some dirtier nuclear ’s or coal’s steam energy, PV’s much less efficient than wind. So, what? where major grocery stores simply don’t offer double coupons. In fact, to find grocery stores that offer double coupons I travel 40 minutes away from the city, so I rarely get to take part in these promotions. I shop every week at a store that does not offer coupon doubling, and I still do very well at cutting my grocery bill significantly. At least one major retailer has started offering double-coupon promotions nationwide during certain times of the year. They’re definitely worth watching for! With the current state of the economy, I would guess we’ll see other retailers taking part in similar promotions in the weeks and months ahead. © CTW Features Jill Cataldo, a coupon workshop instructor, writer and mother of three, never passes up a good deal. would increase seaport damage worldwide, further disabling global manufacturing’s essential intercontinental trade, plunging industrial societies deeper into pre-industrial thirdworld-style poverty, killing unprepared multitudes – for a 5 degree better view. When contemplating wind turbines outside tortures you, consider would-be intractable torture from nuclear waste's radiation-induced cancer, often preventable by windharvesters. Science’s cold dispassion serves well, when restraining those feelings luring us under beckoning propaganda’s subliminal aesthetics, favoring harm. STAIRS GOT YOU DOWN? YOU NEED A STAIRLIFT!

From page 1 was able to operate with certainty, which he needed because he had to be able to dock at a stable place to unload cars.” Sweet’s original ferry, which could carry five cars, was named “The Twins” after his twin sons, Clinton and Gerald. The ferry operated until 1916, when Sweet had a larger ferry built. “The Twin Boys” replaced its predecessor, with the ability to carry 15 cars. That ferry was in service until 1937, when the service saw a decline following the building of bridges over the lake in Rouses Point and Crown Point, said Cheeseman. Though the marker placed on Lake Shore Road commemorates both of Sweet’s ferries, next Saturday’s ceremony will focus on Sweet’s first ferry, which Cheeseman described as the one that started it all. “It’s significant because it was the one that started bringing an awful lot of people through Chazy,” he said. “It was

a main artery from New York to the rest of New England and from New England to New York and even Montreal.” Town Supervisor Staub G. Spiegel said he looks forward to the ceremony which will honor Sweet’s ingenuity and the commitment of Chazy Friends of the Library, the group which helped fund the creation and installation of the marker. “It is wonderful that we can share with the public this beautiful marker and to give recognition to an innovative resident, Mr. William Sweet and his crew, for making Chazy a part of U.S. history,” said Spiegel. The public ceremony will begin with a performance by the Strawhatters at 12:30 p.m.; the dedication will follow at 1 p.m. The ceremony will be located at the old ferry dock, located near 1736 Lake Shore Road, with a reception to follow at 1722 Lake Shore Road.

ing a member of the village board ... for the last eight years,” said Penfield. “I tried being active through that with committees and so on.” Fifty years ago, the village had another contest for the Mystery Girl during the first Fourth of July celebration. Then, a 14-year-old Beverly Barcomb LaFountain was selected as the Mystery Girl. LaFountain was approached again this year, but instead she was asked to crown the new Mystery Girl and ride along with Penfield during the village’s parade July 5. “I didn’t realize it was 50 years,” laughed LaFountain. During the unveiling ceremony at the Rouses Point Volunteer Fire Department July 3, Racicot and Favreau asked the Mystery Girl to come forward from the audience to reveal herself to the village. When Penfield came forward, LaFountain was there, wearing her crown from her unveiling ceremony in 1959, and crowned Penfield with a new crown.

Then, Penfield picked a name from the 59 correct answers for the contest to announce Melinda Weiss of Rouses Point as the winner. “I thought it was neat,” said Weiss of the contest. “I think it is something that they should do every year.” Weiss, who is also a native of Rouses Point guessed the Mystery Girl’s identity after the first clue was announced to be “On the streets she often walks, always taking time to stop and talk.” “I always see her walking,” explained Weiss, who cast her vote at Angelo’s Restaurant. As the winner, Weiss received many goodies from the Rouses Point-Champlain Historical Society, including the society’s Quadricentennial pin, T-shirt and calendar. “I’m so glad that so many people really became interested in it,” said Penfield. “It seemed to be something that people really did have a lot of fun with.”

The play, explained Lavin, deals with the social issues of prejudice, class division, love and growth. The story takes place in one of the islands of the French Antilles, with the production being filled with Carribean rhythms and ballads. “It is the kind of story that delivers a message but does it by moving your feet and touching your heart,” said Lavin. “Some people may not even look beyond the colors and music and still have a great time.” The Rouses Point production will be made free to the public through funding provided by the New York State Council on the Arts, CVPH Medical Center, the Rouses Point-Champlain Historical Society and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. BEEKMANTOWN — Beekmantown High School’s class of 2009 entered high school with a reputation of being troublesome and close knit, along with having many detention referrals under their belts. “I think we've come a long way,” said appointed student speaker Emily Fesette, as she turned to face her classmates during their graduation June 26. As the class sat in front of the audience, the four appointed student speakers spoke with anecdotes from high school, inside jokes and cheers. The students and

Hey Kids!

faculty members smiled while reminiscing about the past events, not upset about the students’ departure, but rejoicing about what the last four years have given them all. While celebrating, the selected students also took the time to thank everyone who helped make their high school careers a success. “It takes a community to raise a child,” said senior class treasurer Nathan Bull. “We appreciate your nurturing, advising, and compassion throughout our entire high school experience.” “Thank you, once again, for your unfaltering support,” said Fesette. As the four student speakers — who also included senior class president Meaghan LaValley and secretary Christopher Barnes — each took their place at the

podium, a pattern arose. According to every student speaker, getting good grades, going on field trips and entering the world completely — or almost — prepared weren’t all that made their education at Beekmantown High School so fulfilling. It was the relationships they obtained, whether with other students, faculty or administration, that will affect them for the rest of their lives, they said. “I know that, for myself at least, we wouldn't have gotten this far without them,” said Fesette. As Fesette ended her speech addressing all the people she created these relationships with during high school, she summed up the graduation in a happy, but powerful, “bon voyage.”

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ELLENBURG DEPOT — During Northern Adirondack Central School’s graduation June 26, Joshua Lashway, president and valedictorian of the class of 2009, and student speaker Warren Patterson, addressed their 75 classmates with a farewell to the 13 years they spent together. “I knew last year, when I became class president, that this, delivering a speech at graduation, was my responsibility,” began Lashway in his speech. “But ,what can I possibly say to my fellow peers, to our guests, that can even begin to explain the past 13 years?” Patterson held similar sentiments in his speech when he said his classmates “will always share a special bond,” having known one another for so long. “For these 13 years, we have laughed together, cried together, made friends and enemies. Told secrets and stories,” Patterson said. “For these 13 years we have learned from each other, played games, cracked jokes and just had fun. And more than anything else, we have learned to love one another like family. We have given each other memories that

SATURDAY July 11, 2009

NORTH COUNTRYMAN - 11

Take a kid fishing, before it’s too late!

I

still remember the day I got my first fishing pole. It was a white Shakespeare WonderRod with a closed faced Zebco 202 reel. Unlike the bike I rode at the time, my first fishing rod was not a “hand me down” item. It was a birthday present and it was brand new. I spent as much time practice casting in the backyard as I did on the river. Currently, according to the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, there are more than 50 million active anglers in the United States. The vast majority of active anglers claim they learned to fish because “someone” once took the time to introduce them to the sport. Typically, it was a father, uncle or grandfather that provided this introduction. However, in recent years there have been some dramatic shifts in American society. Today, nearly 50 percent of American children are raised in a single parent family. In 2008, our society passed another threshold as more children were born to an unwed mother than to wedded couples. Nearly 67 percent of all anglers claim that “Dad” took them on their first fishing trip. If “Dad” has a diminishing role in introducing new anglers today, and others don’t step in to fill the void, how will the sport of angling be passed to future generations? The gift of fishing is still something special and those who don’t fish may never know what they have missed, unless those of us who fish take the opportunity to share it.

Fishing with children: Do it now Recreational boating and fishing rank high among America’s favorite sporting activities. More people fish than play golf and tennis combined. The surest way to ensure longevity of the sport is by increased public awareness. Children that become committed an-

glers quickly develop an awareness and appreciation of the need for protecting, conserving and restoring America’s aquatic natural resources. Today’s children will be the the next generation of American anglers, or not. With the vast angling resources available across the Adirondacks, parents and educators, it would be negligent to deny children the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively utilize such resources. As a parent, I’d prefer that my child was out wading on a local stream than hanging out on a street corner.

Tips, techniques for young anglers There are a few key points that parents should be aware of when venturing out with children on an angling adventure. You don’t need a boat full of fancy gear. Often, it’s much easier to fish from shore. Always be positive and enthusiastic; make fishing a fun and enjoyable activity. Let the kids gain competency by practice casting on the lawn at home. Provide a target such as an apple basket to improve accuracy. Watch the weather and insure that outings are short, exciting and productive. Pick a place that is easy to get to, comfortable, and safe. Bring along plenty of snacks, lunch, water, sunscreen, insect repellent, swimsuits, towels and first aid basics. Make the trip comfortable for everyone and above all have patience with snagged lines, lost tackle and missed fish. Praise them often, you will accomplish more with positive feedback than a reprimand. Target species most likely for success such as perch, sunnies or rock bass and use live bait such as worms, minnows or grasshoppers. They don’t have to catch the largest fish in

When it comes to fishing, quantity is more important to children than quality. When introcuding children to the sport, it’s best to target ‘easy to catch’ species such as perch, sunfish or rock bass rather than the more selective species. the pond, but due to a shorter attention span, they must have activity. The key point is to fish where action is assured to avoid boredom. Keep it simple and use reliable equipment that is intended for novices. A short rod with a push button, spin casting reel is much easier to use than a long rod with an open face spinning reel. For smaller children, drill a hole in the handle of the rod and attach a lanyard. Tie the lanyard to the boat or a belt buckle in case they drop the rod. Often kids will release the whole rod when letting go of the ‘push button’ on the reel. This simple tip may save you from “fishing for a rod.” Crimp the barb on all hooks. This makes it much easier to release the fish, a kid or a parent. Protect the children and make certain that they always wear sunglasses when anyone has a rod in hand. A barbless hook can easily be removed from a finger or a foot, but not from an eyeball. Spread anglers out. Make certain they are at least 10 feet apart and watch for others before casting. Use a bobber if possible, it will provide a visual clue to signal a bite. It also gives kids something to watch to stay attentive. Leave your rod at home since the trip is all about a kid’s fishing adventure. If possible,

bring along someone their age to share the adventure with. Look for water bugs, turtles, frogs, beavers or loons. Let them play with minnows or worms. Let them experience nature. Most of all, fishing should be fun, not a chore. Take a camera along. After the trip, get prints in the kid’s hands as soon as possible, so they can share the adventure with others. Encourage them to write a short story to accompany the photos, it can provide helpful feedback for future trips. Show respect for the environment and the water. Teach water safety and in a boat, make certain everyone wears a PFD (lead by example). Make each outing an adventure. Involve children in the planning for the day, look over maps, draw up a list and let them assist in the decision making process. It should be their special time! A big part of the fun is in the preparation. Let them help with the tackle, digging worms or catching grasshoppers. Most of all, strive to depart before the fish do, always leave them wanting more.
