The event commemorated the first gasoline-powered ferry on Lake Champlain, named “The Twins,” after the twin sons of the late William Nelson Sweet, Clinton and Gerald. The ferry operated from 1905-1916, when Sweet had a larger ferry built, named “The Twin Boys.” That ferry was in service until 1937, when the service saw a decline following the building of bridges over the lake in Rouses Point and Crown Point. The July 18 ceremony was attended by nearly 200 people, with local and state officials witnessing the marker’s official unveiling. Clockwise, from top left, are members of the Chazy Central Rural School Key Club with advisor Nicole Lundy who volunteered in the event wearing period clothing; Charles and Linda Cote, owners of the property where the marker is installed; New York State Historian and New York State Museum chief history curator Robert Weible and event co-coordinator John Patterson; and a cake featuring a likeness of William Nelson Sweet operating one of the ferries. nuggles is a beautiful big boy with long, long gray hair. He is a little bit shy and sometimes just needs to be left alone. He has been at the shelter for some years and seems content to stay put. He is declawed, neutered and up-to-date with routine shots. Dutchess was born about a year ago and is very timid by nature. She weighs about 20-25 pounds, is very loyal but needs a home willing to give her lots of time to adjust and work out kinks in her behavior. She is spayed, heartworm negative and up-to-date with routine shots.

t’s official — Windows 7 is set to be released Oct. 22. The recently-confirmed timeline is about three months ahead of the original timeline placing it comfortably ahead of the upcoming holiday period. With the release of the new operating system I wonder what lessons, if any, Microsoft learned from Vista’s launch? There are two that they should have learned. For one, Microsoft had a program called Vista Express Upgrade that allowed purchasers of computers with Windows XP to obtain free or discounted upgrades for Vista. While it was good for Microsoft to offer that service to Windows customers, the program was deeply flawed with hidden costs and long delays. It is expected Microsoft will again be generous to recent computer purchasers in similar fashion but hopefully this time around the process will go better and not have any hidden costs. In accordance with the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section on the Microsoft Web site, Windows 7 Compatibility Center is set to launch in conjunction with Windows 7. With Vista, the Compatibility Center opened roughly 18 months after the launch of Vista and had compatibility issues of their own — users had trouble getting in during the first few days. Knowing if the current hardware and software is compatible with Windows 7 is quite important for users wanting to

upgrade to the new operating system. Windows 7 is building a lot of favorable press on-line and in print. The bothersome but absolutely necessary UAC that first appeared in Vista behaves better and the operating system is said to boot much faster. Generally, it appears to be more efficient at tasks and just not something new and snazzy looking. For instance, By Ron Poland setting up a home network is said to be much easier and connecting to a wireless network is stream-lined and unobtrusive.

Knowing the facts about poison prevention
M
eMail: denpubs@denpubs.com
SATURDAY August 1, 2009
ost people think of children when they think of accidental poisoning. However, the fact is poisons hurt or kill more adults than children. Adults are poisoned when they use household products the wrong way, breathe in or touch chemicals on the job, take too much medicine, or take the wrong medicine. Poisons can hurt you — or even kill you — if you eat them, breathe them in, get them in your eyes, get them on your skin, or get them under or through your skin. Products and medicines can hurt you if they are used in the wrong way, by the wrong person, or in the wrong amount. Examples include: • Drugs (prescription, non-prescription, herbal, illegal or animal medicine • Cleaning products that cause burns (drain opener, toilet bowl cleaner, oven cleaner, rust remover) • Auto fluids(anti-freeze, windshield washer solution) • Carbon monoxide gas (leaky furnace and chimneys, gas stoves and water heaters, generators and space heaters used indoors) • Hydrocarbons (furniture polish, lighter fluid, lamp oil, gasoline, paint thinner, kerosene, turpentine) • Pesticides (weed killers, ant and roach killers, mouse and rat poisons, garden chemicals) • Wild mushrooms Some words of advice to keep in mind are to always read labels, use safety equipment when needed, and store prod-
ucts in their original containers. For life-saving treatment advice about any kind of poison, call the American Association of Poison Control Centers at 1-800-222-1222. A specially-trained nurse, pharmacist or doctor will help answer questions about poisons and poison prevention. The confidential service is provided free of charge, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service is available to people with hearing problems and for those who speak languages other than English. Phone stickers, magnets and materials with the poison control center phone number are able to be obtained through this number. Looking for coupons in all the right places
W
hen people hear how much money I save each week on my grocery bill by using coupons, there are those who conclude that I must use secret, special coupons that the rest of the world isn’t clued into. In one of my coupon classes a woman asked, “Where do you find these coupons? I noticed my friend has different coupons in her paper than I do.” Well, there’s a reason for that. Did you know that the coupons you receive in your Sunday newspaper can be different depending on which paper you subscribe to? At times, companies wishing to reach different market areas will offer coupon promotions to specific newspapers. While all Sunday papers have coupon inserts, the coupons may vary depending on which paper you receive. I subscribe to two papers on Sunday, our local town newspaper and the big Chicago newspaper. While many times both papers will carry the same coupons, there are also times when one paper will have more or different coupons than another. The fact that different newspapers carry different coupons is usually – pardon the pun – news to most people. Obviously, I love coupons, and I enjoy receiving both newspapers on Sunday, not only to keep up on the local and regional news but also to maximize the number of coupons I get each week. Depending on where you live, it may be worth your while to see what coupons are available in each newspaper. While the newspapers inserts are always going to be the primary and best source for coupons, another good place to find coupons is on the Internet. Hundreds of product manufacturers and grocery stores themselves offer printable coupons for their products. Printing coupons from the Internet is easy to do. Browse to the Web site of the manufacturer of the product you’re interested in. Look for a link to print coupons and select the ones you would like to print. Some Web sites may ask you to register for a free account. Others may ask you to install their plug-in that will allow you to print their coupons each time you visit. Then, simply click the Print Coupons link and the
coupons will be sent right to your printer. It’s good to note, too, that you’re allowed to print most Internet coupons twice. Make sure to go back and print another set if you’d like to buy more than one of each item, which is always a smart idea when the price is low. Check your store’s Web site for coupons, too. Many stores offer printable coupons on their Web sites and some will By Jill Cataldo also offer electronic coupons that you can load to your shopper ’s discount card digitally, via the store’s Web site. This is an even easier way to use coupons since you don’t need to print them out at all. Another great place to find good coupons is in grocery stores themselves. Don’t forget to look for coupons in the aisles near the products you’re shopping for. There are coupon dispensers and displays throughout the grocery store. You’d be surprised how many times you might find an item on sale for $1 … and a dispenser full of $1 coupons right above it. Take advantage of both. Remember, pairing a $1 coupon with a $1 sale is one of the easiest ways to get groceries for free. Next week, I’ll answer some more questions from readers like you. If you’re getting started with coupons or you’re a seasoned couponer with a question, please feel free to e-mail it to me; your answer may appear in a future column.

Adirondack Regional Theatre now performing ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ PLATTSBURGH — The Adirondack Regional Theatre production of “Little Shop of Horrors” will continue this week at Clinton Community College’s Stafford Theatre on Clinton Point Drive. The performance, based on the 1960 film by Roger Corman, is being directed by Tom Lavin. Musical direction is by Pamela Lavin and choreography is by Jessica Rae Schaefer, Julie Burdo and Emily Madan. The story centers on a down-and out skid row floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foulmouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination. The show features Jessica Rae Schaefer as Audrey and Tony Gallucci as Seymour Krelborn — the productions two main characters. Supporting roles are played as follows: John Harron as Mr. Mushnik, Andreas Schmidt as Orin Scrivello D.D.S., Kayla Smith as Crystal, Renee Tetreault as Cook-

JCEO seeking entries for golf ball drop, golf tournament By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Last year, the Joint Council for Economic Opportunity of Clinton and Franklin Counties held a golf tournament and golf ball drop to raise funds for the JCEO Foundation. This year, they are planning both fundraisers again, with a few minor changes. JCEO fundraising co-chairs Deb Ciccone and Michelle Boynton took over planning aspects of this year ’s fundraisers, choosing to reevaluate what the money would go towards this year. “This year, we actually formed a committee and kind of looked at all the programs and said, ‘Okay, which programs is in most need,’” explained Ciccone. “Looking at numbers of individuals who had used the pantries in the past and where we were already, we had seen a significant increase.” Due to funding cuts, Ciccone and Boynton determined putting the fundraising money toward JCEO’s 12 emergency food pantries would be best, especially for those in need during the holiday season. Another change the co-chairs made was to reduce the prices for the golf balls.
“We thought $20 was a little steep for tickets, so, we knocked it down to $10,” Ciccone said. Currently, nearly 800 golf balls have been purchased, and people can buy them until the day of the drop, planned for 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at The Barracks Golf Course. The grand prize for the person whose ball drops closest to the hole will win $5,000, as long as all 3,000 balls have been purchased. If less than 3,000 are sold, the grand prize will be based on a percentage of the sales. On the same day, the JCEO Golf Tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. “It’s a four-man team,” Boynton said. “It’s best ball. So, whoever hits the longest drive, everybody on the team can choose to use that ball.” The entry fee per team is $300, which includes green fees, cart rental and lunch. Teams may be all-male, all-female, or co-ed. “We have one team officially,” said Boynton. “But, we have ... several teams that are acknowledging it, they’re very interested. We’re just waiting for the paperwork.” Prizes will be awarded to the top five team scores, longest drive for male and female, closest to the pin, and a holein-one. Donations for the fundraisers are coming in from numerous sponsors

and some are even choosing to donate food instead of money. “Food is food and right now people are having a tough time, so I think we’re very fortunate for vendors, sponsors,” said Ciccone. “If they want to give the food, that’s wonderful, if they want to give the cash, that’s great, too. At this point I don’t think it really matters, as long as we’re getting donations in.” Both Ciccone and Boynton are hoping the community will want to participate in this event, although they realize there are many other golf tournaments, especially during this time of year. “Next year, obviously we would want to start much earlier,” said Ciccone, “and be one of the first tournaments, versus one of the last.” “We’re just really hoping that the community will pull together and see that it’s for a good cause and join in,” added Ciccone. If interested in entering a team for the golf tournament or purchasing a ball for the golf ball drop, contact Ciccone or Boynton at JCEO by calling 561-6310. The golf balls will be dropped 100 feet by a crane from Northline Utilities. In case of rain, the drop may need to be postponed.

Welcome Airborne turnaround for Begor PLATTSBURGH — When Jamy Begor of Mooers won the Sportsman 25-lap X-PLO/EZSTO trophy dash at Airborne Speedway July 18, it was a complete reversal of fortune from the week before. That night, Begor ’s motor came apart and he was left to limp into the pits with smoke pouring out on all sides. “We were at Adirondack Chevrolet that Monday morning buying a new spec motor,” Begor said. “We had it in and fired it up Tuesday night. “It’s been a tough year and to get a win like this really helps.” The victory was Begor ’s first of the season. He started on the outside of the second row and led the final 20 laps. Richie Turner of Fairfax, Vt., and point leader Robin Wood of Plattsburgh followed close behind. It was Begor ’s third top-5 finish and it boosted him into seventh place in the Sportsman championship point standings. Begor relies on a lot of help from crewmembers Dean, Brooke and Tim Surprenant. His No. 19 is sponsored by Agency Insurance, First Choice Pressure Wash, Ellenburg Auto Parts, Ross Funeral Home, Conners Sand Pit and Begor ’s Supply.

Race the Train rolls up the tracks yet again RIPARIUS — For the eighth year, runners will scramble to beat the scenic railroad train over its 8.4-mile trip from Riverside Station in Riparius to the North Creek Depot during the celebrated Race the Train event set for Aug. 1. The race will begin at Riverside Station at 9 a.m. following a “whistle blow.” Spectators are welcome to cheer on their favorite participant as they ride the train to North Creek. Participants and spectators can board the train at 8 a.m. at the North Creek Depot and ride to Riverside Station, allowing for an opportunity to see the course prior to the event. Numerous prizes will be handed out, with the top-three finishers in both men’s and women’s divisions receiving tickets for a Hudson River rafting trip.
Following the race, about 75 children take part in the Family Fun Run. North Creek’s Main Street is closed down while “future” Race the Train runners dash to the finish line. In 2008, nearly 300 participants ran in the event, and more are likely this year. The current record holders are Megan Holden of Ballston Spa with a time of 52:48, while Devin Corwall of Blacksburg, Va. holds the male record with a time of 45:09. The cost of the race this year (including train ride, food, and t-shirt) is $25 for adults and $20 for those 19 and under. Students attending Johnsburg Central School may run for $10. The cost of the Family Fun Run is $5. Runners can register at active.com or call 251-2602 for more information, Arsenault said.

Hot Rods From page 1 more interest each year. “When we held this last year, we doubled in the number of cars [on display],” said Bow. “That’s encouraging, because we know it takes time to build an event, and, again, this is only its third year.” Hot Rods for Hospice centers on a car show which features antique and classic cars, street rods, tuners, trucks and motorcycles, though there is much more to it than that, said Bow. The event includes a parade and chicken barbecue, as well as horseshoe, pool and dart tournaments. “We’ve got something for everyone,” said 8 Ball Billiards Café owner Jay Montpelier. “And, we try to keep everything family-friendly.” That includes offering games for kids and — new this year — face painting. “We try to do a lot for the kids,” said Montpelier. The goal of the Hot Rods for Hospice is two-fold, Bow explained. Though the event aims to raise $5,000 for the nonprofit organization, Hospice of the North Country also benefits by promoting awareness of its services, she said. “It’s a tough economy; we understand that. That’s why we’re grateful for whatever we can raise,” said Bow. “But, events like this get our name out there, and that’s important.” “The generosity we see is awesome, but we really want to see people come and have a good time,” she added. Hot Rods for Hospice will begin next Sunday with registration for the car show from 9-10 a.m. The cost of registration is $12. A parade will begin at 8 Ball Billiards Café at noon and be led through town by the Clinton County Sheriff ’s Department. Performances by local bands will begin at that time. Bands scheduled to perform include Nite Train, Stage 5, and White Trash. A chicken barbecue will be held at 1 p.m., with dinners featuring chicken, corn on the cob, a baked potato and salad. The cost will be $10 for ages 12 and older, $5 for ages 511 and free for children younger than 5. Pool and dart tournaments will begin at 2 p.m., and the horseshoe tournament will start at 3 p.m. Trophies for the car show will be awarded at 5 p.m. For more information about Hot Rods for Hospice, contact Bow at 483-3200 or Montpelier at 324-7665. Those interested in becoming a major sponsor and having their name featured on a T-shirt promoting the event or those wishing to volunteer at the event may also contact Montpelier. “Volunteers are always welcome,” he said.
Fort Montgomery From page 1 will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, and Sunday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. An opening ceremony is expected to be held Saturday at a time to be announced. During the weekend, Millard will give brief tours of the fort, discussing its history. Other activities anticipated for the weekend include demonstrations by Civil War re-enactors, displays of historical artifacts and vintage photos, live entertainment, refreshments and book signings. For more information, including directions to the fort and how to volunteer or provide services for the event, contact Favreau at 297-2064; Ann Thurber at 297-4000, ext. 128; or visit www.historiclakes.org/fortmontgomerydays.htm.

Clinton Cougars to make first appearance at Dragon Boat Festival Event to raise money for Camp-Ta-Kum-Ta and Dragonheart Vermont
Members of Clinton Community College’s dragon boat racing team, the Clinton Cougars, prepare for the 2009 Citizens Bank Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival and Sisters at Heart Celebration. The event, being held Sunday, Aug. 2, will raise money for Vermont’s Camp-Ta-Kum-Ta in South Hero and Dragonheart Vermont. Photo submitted by Ron Poland

heart, in turn, participates in a number of dragon boat races throughout the U.S. and Canada, bringing awareness of the fight against breast and other forms of cancer. Their work has produced funding that has bought much-needed equipment to Fletcher Allen to provide highquality care. The alcohol- and smoke-free festival offers something for everyone. The racing goes on from early Sunday morning until well into the late afternoon. It all begins with the marshalling for all 15 breast cancer survivor teams and ends with the final cup race for community teams. Our two time slots are 8:42 a.m. and 1:33 p.m. If we do well, the team will race one additional time for the Community Cup. There are team tents to visit, many food and drink concessions, and the awesome-to-watch Burlington Taiko Drummers will perform at 1:30 p.m. Another special activity is the highly emotional breast cancer survivor Flower Ceremony and Meter Maids vocal tribute at 12 p.m. Save the hassle of Burlington parking and add to the fun by driving to Port Kent on the New York side and taking the hour-long ferry ride across Lake Champlain as a foot passenger. The first ferry departs Port Kent at 9:15 a.m., with additional trips every 75 minutes. The last ferry to New York departs Burlington at 5 p.m. Sunday. As team captain, I’m asking everyone to please support the Clinton Cougar dragon boat team. Do this by dressing in the team colors of orange and blue and coming out to cheer us on. Stop by the team tent, say “hello” and sign the visitor book. Everyone may help the team with fundraising efforts by sending in a donation or dropping off one at the team tent. Make the check out to “Dragonheart Vermont” and send them to: Ron Poland — Clinton Cougar Race Team Captain, Clinton Community College, 136 Clinton Point Drive, Plattsburgh N.Y. 12901. Anyone preferring to remain anonymous may send a donation directly to the event organizers: Dragonheart Vermont, P.O. Box 65301, Burlington V.T. 05406. If it’s okay, tell them it’s from the Clinton Cougars. I started the Clinton Cougar team for two reasons. My wife, Luanne, is one of the registered nurses on the team and she has seen plenty of cancer battles first-hand in her job as a health provider. Luanne and I have five daughters with the constant hope that none of them ever have to face an insidious cancer of any sort. It’s concerted efforts such as Burlington’s festival and the Dragonheart organization that help keep the light focused on the difficult cancer fight. Won’t you please support this worthy cause?
BURLINGTON, Vt. — What do a college president, four registered nurses and a certified public accountant have in common? They are all members of Clinton Community College’s dragon boat racing team, the Clinton Cougars. Dragon boat racing on Burlington’s waterfront is entering its fourth year, with the Clinton Cougars making their first appearance. The event, officially billed as the “2009 Citizens Bank Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival and Sisters at Heart Celebration,” is being held Sunday, Aug. 2. Dragon boat racing originated in China more than 2,000 years ago, with many variations of boat sizes and race lengths. The Burlington race course is 250-500 yards long with five boats running during each heat. A typical heat lasts about 75-80 seconds, with the usual winner typically being the team who paddles the most consistently and not necessarily the strongest team. The aspect of consistency is what makes it a true team sport. The Burlington festival — which has more information at www.ridethedragon.org — features two types of teams, community teams and breast cancer survivor teams. Both consist of a crew of 20 paddlers, a steer-person and a drummer. At least eight women paddlers are required on each team — the Cougars have 12 women paddlers. The host of the event again this year is Dragonheart Vermont, which is a professional dragon boat race team headquartered in Burlington made up of breast cancer survivors — www.dragonheartvermont.org. The beneficiary of this year ’s event is both Vermont’s CampTa-Kum-Ta in South Hero for kids with cancer — www.takumta.org — and the Dragonheart Vermont organization. Both are cancer survivor nonprofit organizations. The goal is to raise $300,000 with half on the funds going toward the cost of a new activities building at Camp TaKum-Ta and the other half supporting Dragonheart. Each team pays a $1,470 entry fee and attempts to raise other money. The entry fee covers the cost of running the event and contributes a portion to the fund-raising goal. Teams are expected to set a fundraising goal, create activities to raise funds and conduct the activities before the event. How does this Vermont event help the North Country? In at least two ways. First, Fletcher Allen Health Center cares for a number of kids with cancer from our area. Some of those kids use the resources provided by Camp-Ta-Kum-Ta. In addition, the Burlington-based Dragonheart organization is hosting Ron Poland is a contributing writer for Denton the festival and receiving financial support through donations and sponsorships.
