Monument rededicated in honor of Champlain Quadricentennial By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — Every pew at St. Mary’s Church was full as a special Quadricentennial Mass was held Aug. 2. The Mass was dedicated to the founding families of the town of Champlain and, following the ceremony, a rededication ceremony for the 1907 Samuel de Champlain monument on the church grounds was held. During the rededication, the Rev. Terry LaValley, administrator of the Diocese of Ogdensburg, held up a small medallion, which he explained was from the 350th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s exploration of the region. “May this great French explorer ’s dedication to faith, inspire all who gaze upon it to strengthen their own faith in the God who creates and redeems,” said LaValley as he blessed the monument. “We pray God, bless all of us, that we may have the vision to look into tomorrow with the same courage and faithful hope as the man we honor today.” Champlain trustee and Knights of Columbus Council 3525 grand knight Thomas Trombley shared the local monument was the first in the
United States to be dedicated to Samuel de Champlain. Trombley also explained the celebration of the monument’s erection on July 4, 1907 “was attended by an estimated 6,000 American-French citizens.” Trombley added a high Mass was officiated by a priest and bishop from New York, Quebec and Massachusetts. “In total there were over 100 visiting clergy,” he said. Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Commission vice chairperson Celine R. Paquette concluded the ceremony with a prayer. “Oh my God, we dedicate this monument to the memory of Samuel de Champlain, a man with a dream and a vision which brought him to what was then the very edge of civilization,” she said. “Having experienced first-hand the ravages of wars of religion in Europe, he dreamed of a new nation where men and women of all races and creeds lived together in unity and respect and trust. He was far ahead of his contemporaries in this vision.” “May all those who in the future will stand on this spot be encouraged to dream their own dreams and be inspired by this great man to make this world a little better by their efforts.”

ROUSES POINT — Eighteen-year-old Alexandra L. Barie has a passion for horses, and it’s that passion that has driven her to start her own business. Earlier this year, Barie began Horses In Motion, an equestrian riding school with a focus on offering horseback riding lessons for beginners. Drawing from her experience of riding for the past 11 years and working with Carolyn Reid, a trainer with Sun E Hill Farm in Champlain, Barie decided to turn her hobby into a business she feels will offer a valuable service.

SARANAC LAKE — Janice D. Washburn considers herself lucky to be alive. It was four years ago when the now 55year-old Keeseville resident was returning to work from her lunch break and noticed something wasn’t quite right. “I started to feel dizzy,” Washburn recalled. “I thought I was having a stroke.” Though her memory of that day is still fuzzy, Washburn said she remembers being taken by ambulance to CVPH Medical Center, just minutes away from her office. Upon further evaluation, it was found she had a ruptured brain aneurysm and doctors immediately ordered her to be airlifted to Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burlington, Vt. — a trip that would have taken much longer by ambulance, said Washburn. “I only suffered mild disabilities because of how quickly they got me to Burlington,” she said. Though she lost hearing in one ear and
