Elementary school reimbursed $82,565 for taking steps to become more energy efficient By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — As a member of the Independent Energy Efficiency Program, the village of Rouses Point was able to help Rouses Point Elementary School in a big way. Recently, the elementary school completed their renovation project which began last year. During the construction, energy-efficient heat pump systems, lighting and windows were installed, which allowed the village to reimburse the school for part of the expenses. Of the $400,000 the school spent in becoming energy-efficient, the village was able to pay back $82,565 to help ease the costs. In 2005, then Gov. George Pataki extended the hydro contract for power for municipalities in New
York, from 2013-2025. By doing so, the municipalities had to agree to become more energy-efficient. Through IEEP, the village is able to take a portion of the electricity they sell and put it towards a fund, which in turn can be used to pay for energy-efficient products village residents choose to buy. “The beauty of this is we control [the funds],” said Mayor George A. Rivers. “We decide where it’s going to be spent.” When word got to the village board Rouses Point Elementary School was doing construction, Rivers said the village could be of some assistance. “I said, ‘Well, Rouses Point, you put energy-efficient in there, we can get some help for you,’” recalled the mayor. “It’s always nice to receive extra funds and I guess the longterm benefit is we have more en-
Verizon still on the horizon By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — For the last two years, Verizon Wireless has been working to get a tower in the village of Rouses Point. One way or another, it appears they will succeed. During a Nov. 2 meeting of the village board, an update was given by Mayor George A. Rivers that Landmark Structures Inc. and Verizon Wireless are currently working together to get the tower up and running. Landmark Structures was the company that erected the water tower in Rouses Point. Verizon Wireless is looking to put their tower on top of the structure to save in expenses of putting up a completely new tower.
However, Landmark has to sign a contract to allow for the cell tower, and first needs to determine whether or not the tower will damage the inside of the water tower. “Nothing will happen until Landmark and Verizon get their act together,” said Rivers. If Landmark decides it is in their best interest to not have the cell tower added to the existing structure, then Verizon may have to build a completely new tower on the same property. With either decision, when Verizon puts up their cell tower, it will give cell reception within a five-mile radius of the tower. “It sure as hell will help the residents,” Rivers said.

ergy efficient lighting in the school,” said school district superintendent Peter J. Turner. “We’re fortunate enough that Rouses Point is a part of the Municipal Electric System and they have different grants that are available to them. It’s great that we could benefit from that.” The village has also put some of the money from the program towards installing thermal pane windows in storefronts, as a part of the village’s revitalization project, adding LED lights in the street lights, and using LEDs for the village’s Christmas lights. The village also gave a coupon to any ratepayer in the village to receive two compact fluorescent light bulbs. “It’s been a fantastic program, for everybody,” said Rivers. “it’s been very lucrative to the village.”

NCCS planning first after-prom party By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — In recent years, local schools have decided to offer safer alternatives after prom. This year, Northeastern Clinton Central School is hopping on the bandwagon. On Oct. 20, school administrators met with parents of students to discuss the option of having an after-prom party. Although the meeting was a success, many more volunteers are needed to help make the party a reality. “Prom is a big deal and after prom is also a big deal,” said NCCS high

school principal Stephen E. Gratto. “Students are under a lot of pressure to find something to do. They’ve got to go to a cool party or they’ve got to throw a cool party or they’ve got to drink or they’ve got to do other high-risk behaviors. We want to make their lives easier and safer.” The prom, which will be held Saturday, May 15, in the White Room at the Rainbow Wedding and Banquet Hall in Altona, is offered to the junior class. The prom will be held from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m., with the after-prom party following at the school at 12:30 a.m. Currently, a committee has been put together by

the school to investigate ideas for the after-prom party, which will be brought forth to the juniors. “We’re going to come up with a bunch of choices and prices then ... we’re going to ask [the juniors] what they’re interested in,” said Gratto. Some of the ideas that have already surfaced are a tropical luau theme at the school’s pool, and playing volleyball on air mattresses. “We’ve talked to other schools that have very successful after-prom parties,” Gratto explained. “Chazy,

ExxonMobil grant to help high school, middle school By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — Northeastern Clinton Central High School has been receiving a grant annually from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance. And, this year, it is music to their ears. In the past, the school has been nominated by SB Collins Inc., St. Albans, Vt., a distributor for Exxon Mobil, receiving $500 yearly. EMEA works by having their local Exxon distributors nominate a local school of their choice to receive the grant. Of the 10,400 distrib-
