AuSable Valley Patriots Boys Track & Field
The Patriots track and field team has a very different look this season, but that may serve to help the team as the season unfolds in 2015. Brandon Ruocco, Zach Lawrence, David Vicaro and Alex Wilson return to AuSable Valley to handle distance events while Nate Manning and Joel Martineau, two more returning athletes, will take on sprints and jumps. Aside from those groups, plenty of new athletes will take to the track. Newcomers Mark Whitney and Thorne Bola will join returner Desmond Fout on throws. In sprints, there will befresh faces in Brad Pray, Carl Kelley, Riley Smith and Dylan Trombley. “One of our strengths may be that we come with very few preconceived ideas about ‘who’s who’ and who should win events,” said Patriots head coach Heith Ford. “We will bust out and just compete.”

Girls Track & Field
The Lady Patriots may be light on seniors, but they make up for it with a deeper roster of athletes than in years past. “We have a larger team this year through a concentrated recruiting effort,” said AuSable Valley head coach Sean Ganter. “I am very excited about the returnees and newcomers.” The coach expects a competitive team this spring, due in part to numbers — the team has 21 athletes overall — but also some talented athletes. Senior Jessica Malskis will compete in middle and long distance races while senior teammate will add leadership in hurdles, jumps and middle distance. Brinn Peck and Briana Williams, both in their sophomore year and coming off of strong indoor track seasons this just past winter, can be expected to vie for podium finishes in the spring as well. Though the freshman- and sophomore-laden roster will require some integration of new athletes into specific events, explained the coach, he’s excited for what the team is capable of in 2015.

Unseating traditional Tri-Lake powers Lake Placid and Saranac Lake is no easy task, but this year’s Patriots team may have the right recipe. Only one player graduated from last season’s 7-3 squad, leaving AuSable Valley with six returning golfers with match experience. Senior Riley Taylor, as well as juniors Nate Devins, Lucas Finnegan and Kyle Hart each started all 10 matches last season, while Chasm Perkett and Noah Martineau have match experience as well. Head coach Chris Dubay, entering his 21st year at the helm, said playing away from their home course, Harmony Golf Course in Port Kent, will be key this season as the team tries to improve on last year’s mark and sectionals performance. “The team will see how it matches up with the top teams,” said Dubay. “But it will be tough against defending champ Lake Placid, and always-talented Saranac Lake.” Though finishing near or at the top isn’t an easy feat, the Patriots have the personnel and guidance to give it their best shot in 2015.

With only five players on the roster who saw playing time last year, it will be up to then to lead the Patriots baseball team into 2015. Seniors Keith Christensen, Tyler Champine and Jamie Coolidge, as well as junior Ali Sikandar and sophomore Brandon Snow, will all look to fill the shoes of last year’s graduates. AuSable Valley lost five players overall, including four CVAC all-stars in Shane Douglas, Nick McDonald, Dillon Savage and Mike McDonald. The team will be without Roger Preston as well. First-year starters this season include junior Dylan Murphy and sophomores Trent Bordeau and James Carter. Alex Defayette, Brandon Giddings, Wyatt Peck and Kevin Strack round out this year’s roster. Head coach Randy Douglas said that team chemistry and work ethic have been strong in pre-season practices, though much will ride on the experienced players. Despite the question marks heading into the season, Douglas had this to say of the team: “The kids are very eager to win some games.”

One year removed from an appearance in the Class B title game, the Lady Patriots again have their sights set on a championship despite some tough departures. Six players from last year’s team graduated, including CVAC all-stars Logan Snow and Miranda Sheffer, leaving some big shoes to fill for a playoff run. “Our goal is the Class C title but we will be taking one game at a time,” said head coach Marty Snow, “as we are a very young team and will need time to develop.” A backbone for AuSable Valley this season is one of the strongest pitcher/catcher combos in the league in seniors Madison Rondeau, the conference leader in strikeouts last season, and Kendra Niemann. The other senior on the team, Priscilla Coats, will lead in the outfield with Madison McCabe and Hannah Rondeau. Closer to the plate the Patriots have a new look. Sydney Snow will cover first, Brianna Savage at second, Vanessa Garrow at shortstop and Kourtney Keenan at third base. All of the players, said the coach, can cover any position while hitting figures to be a strength. He added that fielding will have to improve, as well as errors. “This group seemed to bond quickly and they all have a great attitude,” said Snow. “I expect them to have a solid year and be competitive.”
Softball breakdown Head coach: Marty Snow 2014 record: 10-4
Without a single senior lost to graduation last season, the Lady Patriots will look to add tallies to the win column in 2015. Despite a one-win campaign a year ago, head coach Jay Hamilton enjoyed working with the team and is looking forward to upcoming play. “Lots of fun with a young team,” said Hamilton of last year’s group. “Now that they have gained experience, we should be more competitive.” AuSable Valley’s roster is a balance of seniority to youth. Shelby Bourgeois and Alexis Joy are the team’s lone seniors, followed by a sizeable junior group of seven. Five more members of the team are in their freshman year or earlier. Hamilton commended the team’s attitude and sportsmanship so far this spring as the ladies work toward adding some more wins.

Elizabethtown-Lewis Lions / EKMW Emus Track & Field
EKMW may not have some of the same benefits as one-school track and field teams — for example, the traveling required just to get to practice — but certainly makes up for it with athletes. A year ago, the girls’ and boys’ teams went a combined 11-1, capped off by the Lady Emus undefeated finish in Division II. Three members of those teams — Halie Snyder, Jon Gay and Kyle Van Buren — made it to states, where Snyder claimed the Division II 400 meter state championship. Of that group, only Gay returns to help carry EKMW into 2015. He, along with Tommy Maron and Jarron Boyle, are expected to lead the way amongst the boys. On the girls’ side, Sara Snyder and Myra Adams are athletes to watch in the middle distance races while Juliett Baker and McKenna Harris will take on the long sprints. Co-head coach Howard Hammonds said that with most of the team made up by underclassmen, it may be a rebuilding year for the Emus as competition will help lay a foundation for the future. While there’s plenty of youth on the team, EKMW will look to the top in some events. The top boys have experience at states in both cross country and indoor track while Adams is also coming off a cross country state qualification. Hammond added that some young talent amongst the girl sprinters could, with work, “surprise some of the teams in Section VII.”

Baseball
So far it has been quite the year for the senior Beavers. After strong campaigns in both soccer and basketball, Keene will look to cap off the school year on the winning side of baseball games this spring. Despite the team’s 1-12 mark in 2014, Beavers head coach Matt Mills said that a lot of those losses were close ones — games, the coach hopes, that the team will be on the other side of this time around. A strength this season, said Mills, is a heavy senior class, led by Colton Venner, Brandon Dumas and Jesse Summo. Sophomore Ethan Giglinto may be another player to keep an eye on. All four are capable of taking to both the mound and infield. Paul Ko, Harry Joannette, Austin Brown and Josh Haberle round out a senior core that’s seven players deep — exactly half of the team. Both hitting and pitching will be areas of focus, said the coach, as the team will look to improve on its mark a year ago to send the seniors off proudly.

A year removed from a strong campaign, the Beavers will look to continue their success this coming season. Keene won seven of 10 games in 2014, its only losses coming to Minerva/Newcomb and Class D champ Crown Point. Head coach Chad Lopez said pitchers Taylor Geiger and Elaina Smith are both coming off of strong seasons on the mound while the infield returns five starters from last year. Hanna Whitney (second base), Grace Sturgess (third base), Madison Gifford (catcher) are all back to anchor the defense, while Geiger and Smith will handle shortstop. It isn’t too different a case in the outfield: Liza Amirault and Vanessa Heald both have starting experience. Though the Beavers do have a tough stretch of three consecutive games against the Mountaineers and Panthers, they close the regular season with a two-game home stand and will look to be a force in Class D this spring.

With snow still on the ground at press time, the Westport golfers were staying busy with indoor practices and getting ready to see what spring would bring. “They have a good mindset of what they need to work on,” said head coach Brad Rascoe. “As soon as we can get on some grass we will be able to evaluate more on each individual’s game.” The coach went on to say that although it’s hard to gauge a team in late winter, he and the group were looking forward to a successful season. Fundamentals, short game, confidence in match play and having fun are the main goals for Westport golf, added Rascoe. When Westport and Elizabethtown-Lewis put athletes together on the soccer field, they called themselves the Griffins. Now, in honor of the upcoming Town of Westport Bicentennial, athletes from the two schools are taking a name dating back to Westport in the 1930s: the Polar Bears. The Polar Bears are coming off their first over-.500 season since 2011, though a handful of the personnel who helped them to the task have graduated. Six seniors, including five starters, moved on, leaving plenty of shoes for this year’s squad to fill. Sam Napper, a returning second team all-star, should be one to do so, as well as returning starters Thomas Mero, Dylan Limlaw and Briar Christian. Coming from Elizabethtown-Lewis, explained Polar Bears head coach Don Markwica, will be Dewey Aguni, a starting shortstop who will also pitch. Also on the mound will be Skylar Kurth, a first-year varsity player, as well as Limlaw and Napper. Markwica explained that getting the newer players to adapt to the varsity game will be key, as well as sound fundamentals all around. “If we can play to our potential and our pitchers do as well as we expect, then we will be competitive in a league that is very well balanced,” said Markwica.

Having lost six players to graduation after a 4-5 season last year, Westport will look to a handful of returning athletes to guide its new members into 2015. The Eagles will be without a handful of graduates this year in Emily Rascoe, Samantha Roy, Sydney Mitchell, Megan Sudduth, Brendee Russell and Sahrah Looby. In their place are returning athletes Keragan Viens, Hannah Schwoebel, Ellie Schwoebel and Sarina Westerkamp. After those four is seven players all new to the varsity game, giving the coming season some unknowns once play gets underway. Some qualities, however, have already begun to stand out in the preseason. Head coack Ike Tyler said that team speed and team concept has been strong so far, as well as solid chemistry. He added that it will be key for the veterans to “step up and help the new players adjust to the varsity level.” “We will get better as the season goes and we’ll see what happens,” said Tyler. “We look forward to a fun year with a lot of improving as we go.”

Willsboro Warriors
Golf
Though a “rebuilding year” can carry with it all sorts of meanings, the Warriors golf team has a roster that will set it up for years to come. “With only one senior this year, we will be fielding a mostly younger team with room for growth,” said Willsboro head coach John Oliver. Of the 13 golfers on the roster this spring, most have years of opportunity ahead. Jack Oliver is the team’s lone senior, followed by three juniors. The rest of the squad consists of three freshman and another six in seventh and eighth grades. With the loss of Seth Swires and Nick Arnold from last year’s 5-3 team and a small group of experienced golfers, the coach said building strength for the future will be a focus in 2015 and that a 4-4 mark is one goal. However, records aside, the Warriors have what may matter most going into a new season: “The players love the game of golf and have fun,” said Oliver.

With a deep senior class — seven of the team’s 12 players are in their final year — the Lady Warriors will look to get into the win column in 2015. Head coach David Lee said he hopes the team improves on last year’s winless record and that now there are a few more girls who put it solid effort. Willsboro will make to make up for the losses of pitcher Kelsey Sloper and a top hitter in Tiffani Tromblee, but so far in practices Lee has seen good fielding, hitting and improvement on the mound. Chazy Eagles
Last year’s Chazy Eagles baseball team put together a solid season, going 7-3 before losing to eventual Class D champ Lake Placid in the semifinals. Though a trio of key athletes from that team — Alex LaPierre, Dylan Doran and Hayden Guay — are gone, the Eagles will look to stay competitive with the MVAC schools in 2015. Head coach Brian Norcross said that he expects “a pretty evenly balanced league” this season, though Crown Point may stand out. While the Eagles lack experience on the mound, explained the coach, he added that depth and versatility on the roster figures to be a strength. Chazy goes 16 deep this season, led by a strong senior class of Josh Barriere (captain), Zach Brothers (captain), Derek Drake, Keegan O’Connor, Alex Duprey and Jordan Hemingway. Below the senior class are four juniors, three sophomores, a freshman and two eighth graders, giving Chazy a blend of veterans and up-and-coming athletes for this coming season and beyond.

Northern Adirondack Bobcats
The recipe couldn’t be much better for the Bobcats this season. The reigning Section VII Class C champions return in 2015 without any departures, putting themselves in a good position for a sectional repeat. Head coach Dan Bushey said he hopes the team will improve on its 2-4 mark in the 2014 regular season and repeat come playoffs. Most of the team, he said, have now played two full seasons, lending the Bobcats strength in experience. An area of focus will be serving consistency, Bushey added. Players to watch include Scott Kellett, Mitchell Garceau, Jared Brunelle, Steven Warick and Blake Forkey. Out of the 15 players on the roster, two thirds are sophomores or younger, setting the team up for not just this season but plenty to follow.

With nearly as many freshman as players lost to graduation, a young Lady Bobcats tennis team will look to fill plenty of shoes this spring. Last season, six seniors — Maegan Brunelle, Katie Lamb, Hunter Nantasaeng, Tylar LaFountain, Amber Collins and Katelyn Snide — played their final year for Northern Adirondack. Now, five different freshmen and a sophomore make up over half of the rebuilding squad. Head coach John Shulz sees the team’s youth as a strength this season. Led by player-to-watch Taylor Pitts, one of three seniors on the team, the Bobcats will look to improve on last year’s onewin campaign.

Softball
For the 2015 Northern Adirondack softball team, the only direction to go is up. A year ago, low numbers contributed to a winless campaign, but a deeper roster as well as some strong returning athletes may help shake away the previous year. “We have a bunch of strong returning players that can help our younger athletes become better,” said Bobcats head coach Tim Drollette. Despite some losses from last year — Jillian Scott, Michalea Manor, Lindsay Bruce, Darbi Rabideau and Olivia Barnaby — this year’s team is 13 deep, including a handful of Northern Adirondack athletes coming off a basketball final four campaign. Though softball is a different game, the competitive nature it takes to reach that stage isn’t. With six players in their sophomore year or earlier, there are plenty of up-and-comers to learn from the combined seven juniors and seniors on this season’s balanced team. When asked about team goals, Drollette had this to say: “Have an enjoyable and more competitive season.”

Baseball
A year ago, a young and learning Bobcats baseball team finished 5-6 with its best play coming at the end of the season. Now, the sights are set even higher. Northern Adirondack head coach Jeph Doorey said the team’s goal is a Section VII Class C championship and he may very well have the athletes to do it. Pitching and team speed have been strengths in the pre-season while generating runs figures to be a point of emphasis moving into 2015. Three seniors — Ethan King, Kody Smith and Brandon Honan — will lead a team with a deep junior class. Six juniors follow, as well as a pair of sophomores. Doorey said to keep on eye on King, Stephen Peryea and Josh Juntunen this season.

Northeastern Clinton Cougars Golf
With 11 players in their freshman year or younger and just one senior, the Cougars golf team is built for the long haul.
A youth-heavy roster will look to replace key seniors — Jordan LaMere, Curtis Bosley, Joey Robert and Chris Kokes — from last season’s 2014 team that went 5-5. Though young the team may be, head coach Matthew Fredette believes it’ll be ready. “Our lineup is full of many freshman that have been on the team for a couple of years now,” said Fredette. “Although the team is young, this team should have the experience to be competitive in league play.” Scoring averages will have to improve, explained the coach, and if they do the team will be looking to better on last year’s mark.

Northeastern Clinton Cougars Softball
A year removed from a successful softball campaign, the Lady Cougars will look again toward the top of the CVAC in 2015. “We had a great season with some key wins down the stretch,” said head coach Carrie McComb of the 2014 squad. “Our team offense improved as the season went on, which gave us a chance to win every game.” Despite a handful of key losses, this upcoming season may be more of the same for Northeastern Clinton. The roster, which goes 15-deep, is comprised entirely of juniors and seniors. The team returns its starting catcher, third baseman, short stop and right fielder, as well as senior pitcher Myranda Miller, explained the coach. Maddie Tucker is a four-year starter at catcher while juniors Casey Frederick and Katie Matott have three at their respective positions. “They will be looked to for experience,” said McComb of the veteran players. The coach pointed out that health will be key as the team looks to improve on its standing and run in sectionals. As long as the strikes keep coming, she said, the team will be poised to compete.
sophomore class contribute right away. Team speed, especially in the outfield, should help the Cougars this season, as well as strong versatility with players effective at different positions. Some keys this season, explained Norton, will be to not compound mistakes to limit big innings, as well as strong pitching. On the offensive side, timely hits and smart, aggressive on the bases are points of emphasis. When asked about players to watch, the coach took a teamfirst stance: “All players will have to contribute toward team success,” he said.

Though the Cougars are coming off a two-win campaign in 2014, the record doesn’t tell the whole story. First year head coach Jeff Norton said that many games could’ve gone either way last season. This year, Northeastern Clinton will look to be on the winning side. With seven players gone from last year’s squad, Norton expects a strong veteran core of six seniors will help a talented
Though a small Lady Cougars team didn’t register a track and field win in 2014, some the strong individual performances that marked last season should carry over to the next. Jessica Cartier, a state qualifier a year ago, returns to handle the 100 and 400 hurdles for Northeastern Clinton, while four more athletes — Hayley Disco (throwing events), Lizzy Roberts (100 hurdles and sprints), Aislyn McDonough (mid-distance) and Emily Royea (hurdles) — are among those to watch in 2014. Cougars head coach Ann Lynch said the team is working to set and attain individual goals, send more girls to CVAC’s and states, and look for more points in the relays this spring. While the team will need to replace strong performers in Samantha Smith (distance) and Oriana Laflesh (throwing), a solid group of returners will look to do so. Lynch anticipates a strong hurdles group, while the team overall is “a good group of young, athletic girls.”

Things are looking up for the Cougars track and field athletes. Despite coming off an 0-6 season in 2014, head coach Nick Trombley has a group that has grown in numbers year by year and will compete this spring. “We have a great deal of young talent and very good leadership in our upperclassmen,” said Trombley. The 22-athlete deep roster has five seniors and four juniors leading the way this season, as well as deep group of up-andcomers. Trombley is looking for growth as a team this season as well as development of the younger athletes, two keys for a group without Mathew Orr, Brent Stein and Wyatt Rivers, three standouts from last spring.

Beekmantown Eagles
A talent-laden Eagles squad will have its eyes on the top of Division I baseball and a Class B title this coming season. Seven seniors will take the field, led by captains Justin Stevens and Alex Price. Both bring in batting averages over .300 (Stevens with a .323 and Price a .393), while Price is coming off an All-Star shortstop season in which he led the team in doubles, home runs and RBIs. Brantley Marion, a junior this season, is also coming off a strong 2014. In 31 innings pitched he put together a 4-1 record, 39 strikeouts and a 0.90 ERA, all to go along with a .467 batting average. Head coach Eric Bell said that the team will have to overcome the loss of three top pitchers from last season but that the potential is there. “We have quality arms that will be able to fill the slots lost,” said Bell, “but it may take time to get them producing at their highest level.” The Eagles have already been busy this spring. The team played four games in the Mingo Bay Classic baseball tournament in Myrtle Beach and went up against a Section II Class AA opponent in CBA on April 7 for a strong pre-season test. Now the season will decide if a third-straight Division I title and a first sectional title since 2013 is in reach for Beekmantown.

With a roster over 40 athletes deep, the Indians will look to take advantage of a larger-than-usual team this spring. “We should be able to field all events with the added athletes this season,” said head coach Mike Francia, who explained this year’s group is larger than those in the past. “We have a lot of new athletes so our strength will be in our numbers and finding the right event for everyone.” Francia hopes for competitive meets throughout the season, leading up to performing well come sections. The coach, along with assistants Josh Gerrin, John Stafford and Jim Testo, is still looking into getting athletes into hurdles and field events, but strength in numbers should serve the Indians well in 2015.

Last season, said head coach Joni Moschelle-Griffin, the Lady Eagles were on a mission to get Beekmantown on the map. “They did a great job,” said the coach of her 9-3 team a year ago. Despite losing pitcher Aleasha Barcomb, left fielder Lexie Desrocher and center fielder Evelyn Vincencio, the Eagles appear poised to continue what they started in 2014. “We are on a mission to meet or beat last year’s record,” said Moschelle-Griffin, “and have a better showing at sectionals.” Michaela LaFountain moved to pitcher for Beekmantown and is progressing well, said the coach, while Maggie Chauvin moved from short stop to catcher. With some new varsity players as well as some other changes, Moschelle-Griffin expects an adjustment period for the team. She added, however, that the team benefits from a strong cando attitude and team mentality. With a goal to improve on an already-strong record the previous year, those traits should serve the Lady Eagles well this spring.

Girls Tennis
There has been plenty of turnover for the Lady Eagles’ tennis team in the last year, leaving a mix of returning talent and new players taking the court this spring. Five of 11 players from last year’s 4-4 team — including starter graduates Tori Barrett, Tegan Belrose, Alexandra Putnam and Chelsey Tallada — have left shoes to fill. “Our main goal this year is development,” explained head coach Seth Spoor. “We have six returning players who have made great progress in the last couple of years and are looking to build on that. The coach added that although eight of this year’s 14-deep roster are learning the game, he expects there to be plenty of depth in Beekmantown, highlighted by the fact that some players won’t start despite a skill level close to that of the starters. The Eagles will be lead by captain Anna Stitt, one of three seniors on the team, as well as three more juniors. The other eight players range from eighth grade to sophomores, ensuring experience down the road for Beekmantown tennis.

Strength in numbers — that can certainly describe the Lady Indians track and field team this spring. With 53 athletes set to compete this season, Peru should find itself in a good position to challenge for the top of the pack. Head coach Danielle Remillard is looking for a well-rounded team, including depth in all events. The team will be without 2014 standouts Maria Remillard, Kierah LaGrave, Lea Perry and Brittany Bridges, but an increase in numbers should help offset the losses. Remillard said there’s more talent in field areas and that the combination of young and veteran athletes is a major strength of the squad.

The Lady Indians may be without a star from last season, but a strong returning will look to be competitive in the CVAC in preparation for the team’s automatic berth in a Class A regional. Sam Fletcher, the CVAC Most Valuable Player in 2014, will leave big shoes to fill for Peru, but it appears to have the personnel to do it. Head coach John Flynn said the team has a “great nucleus” of athletes going into their third year playing together, led by Kelly Neenan, Maddy Flynn, Kara Barber and Brittany Miner. The coach hopes the team’s senior leadership will be key in close games this season. He added that playing small ball for a run and inning, as well as a continuation of strong defense, will be important in 2015.

The Lady Indians look like the team to beat this spring. Six different starters return from last year’s perfect 8-0 tennis team, including a handful of 2014 CVAC all-stars led by Coach of the Year Jim Neyenhouse. Taylor Higgins and Anna Mitchell took first team No.1 doubles in the year end honors, as well as Margaret Mitchel (second team No. 1 singles) and Cydney Bond (second team No. 3 singles). Kari Kusalonis, one of four players lost from last year’s team, took second team No. 2 singles. Peru will be without her, as well as Shania Howard, Hannah Osborne and Emily Sorrell — all players Neyenhouse said “will be missed.”
Only two players on this year’s roster didn’t start last season. “The girls have started the season with a great attitude toward preparing for the upcoming matches,” said Neyenhouse. “They realize that anything can happen on any given night.”

The Indians, coming off of an 11-win campaign in 2014, will again look to be a force this season behind what could possibly be the most formidable pitching duo in Section VII. “Andy Kneussle and Blake Altizer could combine to be two of the toughest pitchers in the league,” said Peru head coach Brian Marino of two of the team’s players to watch. The Indians talent doesn’t stop there, however. Marino explained that seven players are returning from last year’s squad, including three all-stars. Although the Indians automatically qualify for regionals as the section’s only Class A team, the coach hopes for them to compete hard through the regular season before taking on Section X. “Take one game at a time,” said Marino. “Perform at our highest level everyday and compete for the CVAC Division Championship.” To do that, he added, the Indians will need to cut down on fielding mistakes to force opponents to earn their runs — runs that may be hard to come by with Kneussle and Altizer on the mound.

Boys Tennis
Fresh off a 5-1 season, the Indians will again eye the top of CVAC tennis in 2015. Though Peru will be without two CVAC all-stars in Connor Bond and Johnny McAuliffe, four different players who nabbed conference honors last year return, led by first team No. 2 singles Peter Daly, as well as three second team doubles players in Chase Boyer, Pat Demarais and Alex Rine. While head coach Joseph Higgins said the two departed players leave “tough shoes to fill,” he said the team has been working diligently in preparing for this spring. “The boys have been working hard together,” said Higgins, “realizing the importance of preparing for the many challenges that the season will offer.”

Golf
Last year, the Indians golf team put together a strong season on the courses, tallying a 7-3 overall record. The offseason, however, brought with it some losses, and Peru has some shoes to fill if it’s to repeat such a run. Gone are Jordan Guay, Tyler Lemza, Christian Matilla, Noah Haver and Brandon LePage for 2014, and this year, two of the team’s six starters return: Kyle Miller and Gavin Plimpton. “We lost a lot of seniors last year,” said Indians head coach Tom Harrigan. “We just need the experience.” This year’s team, explained Harrigan, is a young one. A main key to the coming spring will be for the remaining veteran golfers to work with the younger ones on improving their game. So while a snowy spring has brought with it plenty of unknowns, plenty will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Plattsburgh Hornets Track & Field
The Hornets boys’ track team, coming off a 5-3 season, lost only seven players from last year’s squad and will figure to be in the mix atop the CVAC this season. Relay performances and experience will be key, explained head coach Vern Harrison. The coach hopes that increased numbers on the team will lead to not only depth in numbers, but in quality as well. Forty-four boys overall are on the roster this spring, nearly double the size of the 2014 roster, giving the team strong depth in distance events. For the girls’ team, it’s a different story. Last year they went 6-2, though coming into 2015 is a group without 21 athletes from a year ago due to graduation, transfers and moving. Coached by Adam Mehan, the Lady Hornets figure to be strong in sprints and athletic versatility, while depth in field events and inexperience will be key areas of focus this spring.

One year removed from a Section VII Class B championship game appearance, in which they fell 6-5 to Saranac, the Hornets will again look to compete for the title in 2015. Plattsburgh graduated five players from last year’s team, including two CVAC all-stars in Jack Tolosky and Garrett Manchester as well as its entire starting outfield. Despite the losses, a deep pitching roster and experienced infield should help the team be right in the mix for the top of the pack. Head coach Jim Manchester said that while outfield play will be a focus, the team has seven athletes available to take the mound. On top of that, the Hornets got a jump start on 2015 with a preseason trip to play in Myrtle Beach to shake off the rust of the offseason. Three Plattsburgh players — Dan Hartman, Gerrit Rietsema and Ryan Whalen — bring three years of varsity experience to the team. Alex Follmer and Andrew Bechard also have varsity play at multiple positions under their belts while Mike Stetz, another player to watch this season, will return from injury to start in the outfield.

With a balance of senior leaders and some younger talent, the Lady Hornets figure to have the right blend heading into the 2015 softball season. “A mixture of experience and youthful energy will be a strong point of this team,” said Plattsburgh head coach Pat Goodell. “We want to contend for league and sectional titles.” Though the Hornets will be without 2014 standouts Jamie Bedard and Rachel Bedard, the coach has liked what he’s seen so far in pre-season practices. Senior pitcher and infielder Lauren Stanley has stood out so far in the preseason, as well as catcher and outfield play, explained Goodell. Though the Hornets lost a few players from last season’s 4-2 team, plenty more are returning to the court this spring, including four seniors and a pair of promising up-and-comers. Plattsburgh’s Alex Racine (No. 1 singles) and Matt Bracy graduated while Nick Nowosielski is out due to injury, but the team has more at the ready. Josh Ferris, Antony Girard and Brendan Whalen will lead the singles charge while Tuan Luu and Eusung Choe will start at doubles. Mason Kozak, Ben Keever and Leo Lee round out the rest of the roster. Hornets head coach Cathy Whalen, who has a 92-36 record over 14 seasons, said that improvement will be key as players move up in positions, adding that she’s excited encouraged by newcomers Keever and Lee. Aside from improvement, staying healthy will be emphasized on a team already down one to injury.

Last season, the Lady Hornets went 7-1, finishing behind only the Peru Indians in the standings. A year later, the team appears poised to give a run for the top another go. Five players return from the 2014 squad, and have helped bring with them some excellent team chemistry, explained head coach Chris Hartmann. Plattsburgh will have to overcome the loss of Emilie Kneifel and Kelly Cantwell — No. 2 singles and part of No. 1 doubles, respectively — but if it can, a strong season should be in reach. Footwork and conditioning will be key, said Hartmann, as the regular season approaches. Numbers and balance. Those are two works head coach Jim Medeiros used to describe the 48-athlete deep roster for the Lady Chiefs this spring. With only three key cogs from last season’s 7-1 group lost (Jamie Favreau, Allison Fink and Lexi Haley), the Saranac girls’ track and field team will have its sights set on the top of the CVAC this season. For Medeiros, the goal this season is easy to understand: “To steadily improve during the season and to peak at sectionals and state qualifiers,” said the coach. With strong numbers and balance in all events, Medeiros explained that the next step is quality depth at each event. About half the team is made up of newcomers, ranging from seventh to twelfth grade, who will look contribute. Some competitors to watch include Janyll Barber (jumps, sprints), Lexi Blockson (distance), Desiree Dashnaw (jumps, sprints), Elysha O’Connell (distance), Sabrina Bruno (hurdles, jumps), Amy LoTemplio (distance) and Logan Thatcher (throws, sprints).

Last season, the Chiefs hit their stride at the perfect time, topping three teams, including the first and second seeds, for the Section VII Class B title win. Nine players graduated from that team, leaving this year’s new-look Saranac squad with as many sophomores (five) as seniors. “I hate to use the term rebuild, because you sound like you’re setting yourself up to not be successful,” said Chiefs head coach Frank Trudeau. “Let’s just say we’re young at a lot of spots and those boys have some big shoes to fill. But they’re working extremely hard and learning what’s expected of them.” The team, which the coach called respectful and extremely coachable, returns starting senior outfielders in Jacob Lilledahl and Josh Emerson. Sophomore Nick Mather, the team’s only player with varsity pitching experience, will anchor a group that’s been working hard this offseason to take the mound. Trudeau said a great team attitude, speed and work toward strong defense have been strengths in the offseason and may have Saranac in a position to replicate the late-season surge of 2014. “Our goal for the season is to be competitive and improve as the season progresses,” said Trudeau. “Hopefully if we can do that we will peak going into the sectionals.”

Saranac Chiefs Boys Track & Field
The Section VII dynasty that is Saranac track and field graduated 16 seniors from last year’s team, but it’s safe to expect the Chiefs to be near — or at — the top of the standings come season’s end. The team is coming off of an 8-0 CVAC season, having won 38 straight dual meets over five years to go along with six consecutive sectional titles, culminating in sending 15 athletes to the state championships in 2014. “My main goal is to improve my athletes to help them reach their full potential as a track and field athlete,” said head coach Chris Verkey, “and to do that through hard work, dedication and commitment to the team.” The coach expects his team to be strong in sprints and field events this season. After graduating a handful of distance runners, improving depth there will be key. Athletes to watch include Justin Liechty, Caiden Goodman, Mitch Fink, Noah Pearsall, Colby Russell and Zach Lepage, while the team as a whole will look to bring home a seventh sectional title in a row this season.

Golf
The Chiefs may not have the deepest of rosters, but the golfers have been making up for it with a strong pre-season work ethic. “We don’t have much depth,” said head coach Cody Roberts, “but the athletes we do have are working hard to have a successful season.” Though Saranac lost Austin LaDieu and Jarret Wright from last season’s 3-7 team, Roberts said the team is looking to improve on the mark and get over .500 in 2015. The coach cited the team’s work ethic as a major strength so far this spring while course management and how to get the most from each round have been points of emphasis. Roberts added that Max Staley, only a sophomore this season, is looking to make a run at the state team. He’ll be joined on the fairways and greens by Andrew Caron, Kellen Louis, Jacob Lilledahl and Jacob Arnold.

Tennis
The Cougars boys’ and girls’ tennis teams, both coming off strong seasons in 2014, will again have eyes on the top of the CVAC in the coming spring. The boys team went a perfect 6-0 last year, capping the season off as CVAC champions. Ryan Marks was singles champion while Abbey Miller won the girls singles. Though both Marks and Miller have graduated, as well as standouts Adam Khater and Sarah Babbie, Northeastern Clinton will look to build on its recent play. Head coach Dan Gallagher explained that his team is mixed when it comes to experience. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams “have a core of three strong veteran starters,” said the coach, though after them both teams will rely on starters without varsity experience. “Both teams are hoping to build on last year’s success,” said Gallagher, “and try to have a winning season.”

Seton Catholic Knights Schedule
The Lady Knights may have lost a handful key athletes from last season, but the return of some Section VII stars should have the team up and running this spring. Margaret Champagne, the section’s top cross country runner last fall, is coming off a series of personal bests and will lead a deep class of juniors. Champagne, however, won’t be alone. The DeJordy sisters, Sofia and Lea, are also coming off of strong cross country seasons as well. Knights head coach Kathy Champagne said that this year’s team is one of the largest the school has had despite not having any seniors on the roster. Gone from last spring are Melissa Whyman, Paige Spittler, Maddy Murnane, Ashley Leta and Ashley Carpenter, so it’ll be up to the team’s eight juniors to take the lead this season. The team is 19 deep overall, including a number of novices. Champagne said that the school has been traditionally been strong in the middle/distance events, leaving other areas as points of emphasis. “We are working with our young athletes to help score points in the field events and springs,” said the coach. Other athletes to watch include Sydney Falb and Adeliese Wolf, both eighth graders, who will tackle sprints and jumps, as well as freshman Gretchen Zalis for a variety of events.

Six golfers — three with experience and three new to the team — will take to the course as Knights this season. Head coach Brian Snell hopes that returners Joseph Zalis, Kurtis Olsen and Dawson Pellerin make steady improvement start to finish this season. Zalis is one of three seniors on the team while both Olsen and Pellerin have plenty of seasons of play their tanks: both are just freshmen. New to the team will be seniors Noah Gagnier and Ben Thomas and sophomore Cameron Lee. Though small, the Seton Catholic golfers will be ready to take the season on come the melting of snow.

Boys Track & Field
Offseason turnover has this years Knights track and field team in need of some new production —there may be athletes of all ages handling it. After losing Evan Page, Steven Murray, Cody Quantock and Joe Aabye, there’s going to be plenty of reliance on both the veterans and a talented group of up-and-comers. Freshman Caleb Moore, said head coach Kathy Champagne, “had some big break out performances during cross country and indoor track.” Another freshman, Matt Cote, is coming off a strong cross country season as well while three eighth graders — Nate Boule, John Glover and Aidan Masten — are all expected to contibute in 2015. On the senior end of the roster, Champagne expects Kaden Baugh and Tom Racette, both coming off of strong basketball seasons, to be called upon in different events. Middle distance is expected to be a continued strength for the team. “The goal is for our new/young athletes to gain experience,” said Champagne. “We would like to see all our athletes improve on their performances.”

Lake Placid Blue Bombers
The Blue Bombers, both boys and girls, are on the rise —in numbers and in will. “We have been lucky in coaching talented and motivated athletes, which is contagious to other students and is why our numbers are growing,” said co-head coach Mel Frazer. “We have strengths in all disciplines now on the track and in the field.” On the boys’ side, the roster appears poised to improve on last season’s 1-6 mark. Karl Shulz and Scott Shulz, who are both coming off of top-of-the-pack cross country and cross country skiing seasons, join Forest Ledger and Nick Saulpaugh as athletes to watch in the distance races. Connor Garrett and Troy Scsigulinsky will lead the way in sprints while Nzoni Thompson, Trent White, Stuart Baird, Henry McGrew, Chris Rissberger, Mickey Morelli and Jarred Paul lead a deep group of middle distances runners. Jonah Burns and Austin Pratt are among two to watch in the throws while Thompson, Baird, Paul, White and Garrett will handle jumps. Frazer added that the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams figure to be strong, as well as the team’s newcomers. The Lady Blue Bombers, meanwhile, return from a 6-1 season with another strong roster. Missed will be Tatiana Kobe in shot put and discuss, but like the boys’ team, strong relay teams and newcomers figure to contend. Hannah Kaltenbach, Camille Craig, Jilly Goulette and Grace McGrew may be top sprinters while Gabby Armstrong, Sara Rose-McCandlish, Esther Munoz and Lissy Ashley will join the sprinter group in middle distance. In long distance, Nina Armstrong and Gabby Armstrong will look to continue a trend of strong performances throughout the sports year and vie for the lead along with Rose-McCandlish, Lissy Ashley, Sage Miller and Lily Flanigan.

Lake Placid Blue Bombers Golf
The Blue Bombers, the reigning Section VII Class D champion, have a chance at winning their third straight title in 2015. Lake Placid lost only two starters and three overall from last season in Shane McNierney, Garrett Woodruff and Davis Moore, leaving the team with plenty of experience this season. Of the seven returning players, six are entering their third season with starting experience, said head coach Brian Brandes. The coach said it will be important to replace McNierney, a pitcher and lead-off batter last season. Ryan Damp, Chris Williams, Alex Brandes, Kamm Cassidy and Noah Mohr are all slated to take the mound while Connor Preston will handle duties behind the plate. Starters also include Tucker Angelopoulos and Dalton Jacques while five more players — Kris Patterson, Billy Waldy, Evan Damp, Kevin Geesler and Sean Moore — are entering their first year. Another key, explained Brandes, is first-year players stepping up this season, as well as getting outdoor practice time as winter lingered well into April in Lake Placid.
The margin between the Blue Bombers and neighboring Red Storm was razor thin last season. Lake Placid won the CVAC with an unblemished record while Saranac Lake captured sectionals by a narrow margin of three strokes. To cap it all off, three Blue Bomber golfers made it to states at Cornell University. A year later, the Blue Bombers return to the links without any key roster losses, putting themselves in a strong position for another run to the top of the standings. Head coach John Glinski has three major goals for the season: win the league, sectionals and qualify players for states. The goals don’t seem overly lofty with the team’s top seven players back for 2015. “All six players can shoot in the 30’s for nine holes,” said Glinski, who added that the top of the group includes four seniors. Lake Placid kicks its season off with four straight away games before five a row at Craig Wood. An away match at Peru will cap off the regular season with sectionals to follow a week later at Saranac Inn.

A year ago, the 4-3 Lady Red Storm track and field team lacked the depth to compete with some of the bigger teams in Section VII. Now, there’s plenty of depth, but with it comes the challenge of getting a handful of newcomer athletes into the right spot this spring. Head coach Peter Frenette said he hopes to see progress and improvement throughout the season, ideally peaking when sectionals arrive. Saranac Lake will be without one of last season’s medium distance standouts, Samantha Martin, but the coach sees upside on this year’s team, namely the distance runners.

Boys Tennis
The team category of “boys tennis” in Lake Placid is a bit of a misnomer: a year ago, Lady Blue Bomber Georgia O’Leary joined the team and will be back for 2015. “(Last season) Georgia O’Leary played her first season on the boys team and discovered challenges that she is excited to meet this season,” said Lake Placid head coach Tyler Chase. In addition to O’Leary, the Blue Bombers will put three more seniors on the court in Ray Zhang, Chase Hayes and Tarik Cecunjanin. After them, the team has some up-and-comers the coach is excited about. “Our new players are strong athletes who will adapt to the game quickly,” said Chase. “They are good athletes and are picking up skills fast.” The coach went on to say that the team is working on fielding the right combinations and will look to be competitive in league play this spring, adding that there’s “certainly room for improvement” in 2015. The Blue Bombers’ season kicks off at Northern Adirondack on April 22.

Saranac Girls Lake Red Storm Track & Field
Despite winter’s long grip on Saranac Lake, a team deeper than last year’s has been busy getting ready for 2015. “Despite incredibly bad weather, we have managed to have some excellent practices and our kids have presented us with an excellent work ethic,” said head coach Cy Ellsworth. The coach went on to explain that a number of boys who came out for the team this season compete in sports year-round, giving the Red Storm a deep roster of athletic students. The team has 24 overall, compared to 18 a year ago. Thought the team is young — only three are seniors — Ellsworth said he and the other two coaches, Jason Wamsganz and Bill Peer, have been working on fundamentals in all events as well as instilling an already-strong work ethic. Abraham Newton (sprints, mid-distance), David Sullivan (throws), Jason Stack (jumps) and Zane Pelletieri (distance) are looking to have strong seasons, while Ellsworth added that plenty more of proven themselves in other sports heading into the track and field season. One can trust his opinion. In the 1990s the coach played football at Syracuse University, earning All-Big East honors on a team that included Marvin Harrison and Donovan McNabb. “We are young. We want the kids to all get stronger in their respective events,” said Ellsworth. “And we are hopeful for the future.”

and grab a few wins this spring. While pitching will be an area of focus, Yando said that the team has a solid infield as well as some good batters at the plate this season. Saranac Lake will look to replace departed center fielder Jenny Ward and short stop Brittany Woodruff and has a well-rounded roster to do so with three seniors, four juniors and five sophomores. Golf
A year ago, there was virtually no separation between the Red Storm and the neighboring Blue Bombers atop Section VII golfing. Given the teams’ consistent play, 2015 may play out the same. Last season’s 9-1 Saranac Lake team tied atop the section with Lake Placid, losing the tiebreaker, and narrowly took sectionals by three shots. Three key players from that team — Dustin Fischer, Austin Ecret and Danny Strack — have graduated, but the Red Storm has a roster 21-golfers deep heading into this season, led by captain Ethan Sawyer. Head coach Chris Stevens said the team is young this season but that all the golfers are excited to learn, play and have fun. He added that playing the course, not the opponent, will help the team as well. Stevens added that eight to 10 players could all be in the top six, giving the team plenty of depth amongst starters, and the coach hopes plenty of the team can build on match play and experience this season.

Tupper Lake Lumberjacks (Section X)
Track & Field
For the Lumberjacks, it’s not all about the record. In Section X, five-place scoring works against the smaller rosters: a team could finish first in every event and still wind up behind in points to a school with more depth. While other sections in the state use three-place scoring — which would benefit Tupper Lake with its 15-athlete roster — it isn’t to be the case in the north this spring. For that reason, in Tupper Lake it will be all about the athlete: “Our objective this year is the same as last,” said Lumberjacks head coach Gordie Duval. “Focus on individual events as we do not have the numbers to compete on a team basis with most of the schools.” While the boys team will be without a trio of strong performers last season in Alan Hurteau (shot put, discuss), Jeremey Roussel (high jump, springs) and Cody LaPierre (long jump sprints), there will be plenty of talent to take to the track and field. Seniors Tom Barton and Zach Boushie will lead the throwers while DJ Shaheen and Matthew Varden will tackle the 1,600 and 800 meter races. Junior Mitch Harriman has looked strong in the preseason training for the 400 while sophomore hurdlers Kiley Stradley and Alan Stuart are readying themselves for the season. Justin Walsh and Dorran Boucher, said the coach, look strong in the 200 and 400. On the ladies’ side, roster size has the same scoring effect. With 13 competing this season, the story is again about the individual athlete. A year ago, the Lumberjills sent two athletes — Tess Klossner and Katie Zurek — to states, where both performed strongly as Klossner nabbed 14th in the 400 and Zurek 10th in shot put and 18th in discuss. And it just so happens that the two are ninth graders and back this season for more. Duval said the team figures to be strong in throws, the triple jump, 400 and sprints this season. Klossner will handle the 400 again, as well as the triple, in which she took first in indoor sectionals this winter. Zurek will again tackle shot put and discuss while senior Madi Fortier looks strong in sprints. She won sectionals two years ago, and after a season-long break, is back to the track this season.

Baseball
The Lumberjacks may have lost eight of its 14 players from last season’s 8-6 team, but they left a mark that will carry into 2015. “They were very good leaders,” said Tupper Lake head coach Travis Depuis, “which has helped the younger players that we will be relying on more this season.” Among the big shoes to fill are those of Mitch Keniston, Devin Larson and Kris Course. All of the team’s experience is in its junior class, said Depuis, and getting the newer players seasoned will be key, with leadership falling on returners Alex Gagnier, John Bouck, Noah Santana and Brad St. Pierre. With some of the better hitters from last year returning to the team, the coach expects scoring to be a Lumberjacks strength. Fielding, however, is still a work in progress. Depuis explained that the team has looked good indoors, but a late winter has left more to be learned when it comes to getting out on the field and gloving fly balls. Though departures and youth can signal unknowns heading into the season, Depuis hopes to a competitive team that will give itself shots to win.
Softball
Ladyjacks head coach Crystal Boucher has her team in year two of a program buildup and is excited for what’s coming. Two veteran seniors will lead the team in 2015 in Malorie McLear, the starting pitcher, and Brooke Dewyea, who Boucher calls her “‘go-to’ utility player.” Both, said the coach, are strong leaders and role models who laid solid groundwork for seasons to come. Five other players — juniors Jordan Burnett, Sidney Kulzer, Bree Staves, Miranda Vaillancourt and sophomore Sarah McGowan — enter the season with varsity experience. Seven more round out the rest of the roster, including five upand-coming freshmen. While pitching will be an area of focus for the team, solid gloves and batting should serve Tupper Lake well. “This year’s team is full of natural athletic abilities with solid softball skills,” said Boucher. “I am so looking forward to working with these ladies as they begin to develop into a respectable competitive force within the Section (X).”
